This is one of the organization of more than 80 churches in Harlem that started renovating affordable housing in Harlem before Harlem became an empowerment zone just about 23 years ago. The Great American Hat Show 2018 Was Out of This World

n Saturday, April 28th, 2018 The Watson Hotel located at 440 West 57th

Street in Midtown Manhattan was the site of Rosebud of New York’s annual Great American Hat Show.

Rosebud of New York is a millinery design firm owned by Harlem business owner and CEO, Harriet Rosebud, who has been designing for over 23 years and teaches courses, such as the history of the hat, fascinator for fun and the construction of the hat.

Now 24 years later, we’ve seen billions of dollars in investments throughout this community from East Harlem to Inwood, 10,000 jobs created, cultural institutions that are now stronger than they’ve ever been, and small businesses that have opened and flourished, all with capital from UMEZ.

UMEZ helps facilitate economic development all throughout Upper Manhattan in the neighborhoods of Central, West and East Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. UMEZ investments have leveraged over $1.1 billion of private capital investments and this commitment has created nearly 10,000 direct jobs thus far.

he Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) announced that the organization’s longtime President and Chief Executive Officer,Kenneth J. Knuckles, will step down in June after 15 years of service to begin his retirement.

Knuckles has had a significant impact on the organization, which works to sustain the economic revitalization of all communities throughout Harlem, and on the greater Harlem community. UMEZ has provided $87 million in loans for real estate projects, $57 million in tax-exempt bonds for real estate development and $98 million in grants focused on arts, culture and workforce development. The organization’s Board of Directors is currently conducting a national search for candidates to fill the position with the aim of selecting a new President and CEO before the end of the Spring.

gether as a community and start demanding affordable housing. Everyone deserves at the very least a decent place to live. In a country as wealthy as America affordable housing should not be a problem for anyone regardless of their income level.

The American dream is still alive, but you must now work harder than ever before to achieve this dream.

A young couple told me a few days ago that they wanted to own a brownstone in Harlem. I encouraged them to pursue their dream. I informed them of the current market value of brownstones. So, they would be aware of the home buying process and that becoming a homeowner would not hap-

pen overnight. They said, “If that’s what it takes we will just have to work harder, save as much as possible and continue to trust in God to make it happen!”

It takes a solid plan to achieve this dream. You must have the desire to succeed at all cost. You must continue to maintain your focus by keeping your goal of homeownership in sight.

has traveled to New Orleans to work hard and build up a stake so he can marry his girlfriend, Charmaine, who has been unable to tell

him she is pregnant. Storm warnings are out for Hurricane Katrina. Despite these, Tupelo and his likable and naturally funny cousin, a

young man named Youngblood, have gambled on reporting for a day’s work due to their financial pressures.

They miss meeting their boss and find themselves clinging to a rooftop, surrounded by murky water that is festering with disease, alligators and the unknown. Meanwhile in Chicago, Charmaine’s cousin, Maxine, has endured the accidental death of her infant. Having split from her husband, Eugene, over the tragedy, she moves in with Charmaine just the night when Tupelo has disappeared. Separation from loved ones gnaws at each

character as the play reveals their struggles for love and happiness. Charmaine must compartmentalize her anxiety over possibly losing Tupelo in order to pursue her career and drive her ambitions forward. Maxine and Eugene must master their grief in order to restore their dreams of success, their marriage and their sanity. All of this is happening in the face of one of America’s greatest natural disasters.

Tribeca Film Festival premieres ‘Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story’ and ‘Say her name: the life and death of Sandra Bland’

here were no Hollywood stars, skinny models nor reality-show celebs walking the Red Carpet on April 21st for ‘Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story’ and on the 24th for ‘Say her name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland’. ‘Only’ real people who came to tell two tragic true stories, that should never have taken place.

Stories that have become far too common in today’s America, especially for brown and black

people. Stories that speak of abuse of power, police brutality, a broken justice system, no accountability and a gun lobby stronger than the institutions in charge of protecting our democracy.

Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, were joined by co -directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason and MSNBC’s Joy Reid as moderator for an impactful panel following the world premiere of ‘Rest in Pow-

er: The Trayvon Martin Story’, about the tragic death of 17 years old Martin, who was shot and killed in 2012 - and its impact on the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The incredibly moving panel welcomed Martin’s parents with two standing ovations. The Martins talked of their struggle to transform their grief into change and to fight for justice. They welcomed the TV series – a dramatization of their book published in 2017 – ‘Rest in power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon

Martin’ - in making sure Trayvon’s story lives on. ‘Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland’ is an impactful, well balanced documentary about a young, strong and positive woman, a Black Lives Matter activist, who allegedly committed suicide while in police custody in Waller County, Texas three days after being arrested for failing to signal a lane change.

The movie dives deeply and masterfully into Ellis charismatic personality and takes the audience into a rich cultural voyage, through rare archival footages and interviews with iconic figures like Harry Belafonte, Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Kathleen Cleaver, Kool & the Gang as well as the famous attendees I named above.

But the ‘high powers’ started to feel threatened by SOUL! It was too bold, true and uncompromising. It painted a raw socio-political portrait of the times still marked by segregation - officially outlawed in ’54- by civil rights movements, and social unrest. No program had ever celebrated black excellence and politics—giving national exposure to voices rarely heard as SOUL did.

As a result, in 1973 the show was grounded. But its legacy lived on and its impact continues to resonate. That

first black Talk Show – as we would call it today - surely paved the way for what was to come, more than 20 years later: from Arsenio Hall to Oprah Winfrey.

I asked Melissa Haizlip how she felt now that the movie was premiering at Tribeca. “It took ten years to make it. Ellis was important to me because he was my uncle and mentor’ she said and continued ‘But more than that, he was every man, he represented black culture and his legacy is important, his story is the story of America and needed to be told. It is particularly relevant that we can celebrate it right now, on his 50th anniversary to shine a light on our heritage”.

In a time when representation, diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities in media are still lacking, and are therefore of the utmost importance, this film is a must see.

t was an unforgettable home-coming of legends strolling down the red carpet for the world premiere of #SOUL50: A 50th Anniversary Tribute to SOUL! held on April 22 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Directors Melissa Haizlip, and Sam Pollard as well as executive producer and ‘voice’ of Mr. Soul, Blair Underwood joined Harlem’s own George Faison and Sade Lythcott, and legends Melba Moore, Sylvia Waters, The Last Poets, Kathleen Cleaver, Sonia Sanchez, Khephra Burns, Susan Taylor, Black Ivory, Loretta Long, Cleo Wade, Lalah Hathaway and composer Robert Glasper.

Excellence was grazing that red carpet and I was fully aware of the importance of the moment.

But who was Mr. Soul? His name was Ellis Haizlip, he was the first black TV show producer and host. He was a pioneer, a trailblazer a fearless man who decided to take matters into his own hands to celebrate and promote black culture in all its forms - literature, poetry, music, and politics - by creating in 1968, on national public-television, a program that was so far ahead of its time yet so past due. Ellis called his variety show ‘SOUL! Melissa Haizlip – Ellis’ niece – and the great Sam Pollard have created a master-

David N. Dinkins’ 21st Annual Leadership and Public Policy Forum

n Tuesday, April 24th, 2018 the line to enter Miller Theatre at Columbia University started forming early on 116th Street and Broadway for the 21st Annual David N. Dinkins Leadership and Public Policy Forum that began at 6 pm. Security was tight because the keynote speaker was The Honorable Eric. H. Holder, Jr., the first black U.S. Attorney General that was appointed by the first black President Barack Obama.

Holder returned to his position as a partner at Covington & Burling LLP after serving U.S. Attorney General.

The topic of discussion for the keynote speaker and the discussion panel to follow was titles, “The Incarceration Crisis that Threatens America’s Democracy.”

Welcome was delivered by the 98th Mayor of Philadelphia and current David N. Dinkins Professor of Professional Practice in Urban and Public Affairs at Columbia University School of International & Public Affairs (“SIPA”), The Honorable Michael A. Nutter.

Dean Janow then introduced the man of the hour, NYC’s 106th Mayor The Honorable David N. Dinkins, Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at SIPA. Mayor Dinkins gave the audience a warm welcome and thanked the packed room of audience members for coming out. Mayor Dinkins commented how this year is moving the forum into its third decade and how this year’s keynote, Eric Holder, was born in the Bronx, educated at Stuyvesant

High School and is a graduate of Columbia College and Law School. He even occupied the ROTC office in protest on this same day in 1969. Since then he’s been a trailblazer committed to civil and equal rights for all.

When Eric Holder took to the stage he said, “Eric Holder with the big Afro took over the ROTC office; he spent a little time behind bars, however, the seven years I spent here were the times of my life. Mass incarceration in the U.S. has grown; in 2012, the total of 2.23 million people was nearly seven times the number in 1972.”

The three levels of government together had expanded the nation’s penal population by more than 1.9 million people since 1972. The U.S. incarceration rate is unsurpassed internationally; it accounts for about 23 percent of the world total.

The policies and practices we put into place during the Obama administration like our “Smart on Crime” initiatives are being rescinded by the current administration. The plan to rectify mass incarceration hasn’t changed: 1. Reduce mandatory sentences

DO YOU HAVE DIFFICULTY WALKING?

verywhere I go, I see people on the streets who are having difficulty walking; some people favor one foot, or a leg, or walk slowly and gingerly, winc-

ing in pain with every step.

It doesn’t have to be this way! Help from a podiatrist can ease those pains, but everyone has to do a bit of self-assessment first.

If your walking is difficult, you have to determine where your problem is, and then the pathway to the solution will be clearer.

Most often, the problem will be in the foot, the knee, the calf, or hip.

Is Your Problem YOUR FOOT? Then a podiatist’s

office will be your first stop but before you go you should try to perorm a bit of self-analysis.

WHERE IS THE PAIN?

▪ In your heel? Heel pain is one of the most common complaints that patients present to podiatrists. It is often caused by plantar fasciitis, the inflammation of a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes, or a fracture, or arthritis. Podiatrists diagnose and treat these problems.

▪ In the balls of your feet? The problem could be thinning of the fat pad, a result of aging, or arthritis, or a painful wart or corn.

▪ In the arch? That again could be plantar fasciitis, or it could be caused by flat feet, which require shoe inserts or orthotics.

▪ Any wound to your foot that does not heal requires an immediate visit to a podiatrist. Ditto with painful numbness.

Is your problem: your knee? Then your primary care physician’s office is your destination. Many

culprits can cause knee pain: arthritis, sports injuries, strains and sprains, among others. The doctor will determine which specialist you need to help you heal.

Is your problem: your calf? An immediate visit to your primary care physician is a must. Pain in the calf, which may cause intermittent limping, indicates a circulation problem, which in turn may indicate PAD (peripheral artery disease, a narrowing of the arteries to the legs). Time is of the essence here.

Please note that an issue that causes difficulty walking isn’t a wait-andsee situation. Take care of it with the appropriate professional as soon as you can.

Breast Reconstruction: Understanding the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Constance M Chen Provides Tips

to cover breast reconstruction if mastectomy - which includes partial mastectomy (i.e., lumpectomy) - is also covered, so any woman undergoing surgical treatment of her breasts should be aware of her rights.

In 1998, Congress passed the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), a federal law that requires group health plans and individual health policies that cover mastectomy to also cover breast reconstruction in

connection with mastectomy. “Before the passage of the WHCRA, insurers could refuse coverage for reconstruction on the grounds that these were cosmetic procedures and not medically necessary,” says Dr. Chen. “Women had to pay for reconstruction themselves or forgo it.

Patients, survivors, healthcare workers, and their supporters worked hard to ensure that a woman would be legally guaranteed the option of reconstructive surgery following mastectomy.”

The WHCRA has specific provisions for breast reconstruction in connection with mastectomy. Insurance benefits are required to include the following: ● All stages of reconstruction of the breast on

which the mastectomy or lumpectomy was performed; ● Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve symmetry and balance; ● Prostheses, if needed, and treatment of any complications of surgery, including lymphedema; ● One home healthcare visit within 48 hours of hospital discharge; ● Outpatient or inpatient care in a healthcare facility based on generally accepted criteria.

Under the WHCRA, women are legally entitled to the breast reconstruction method of their choice even if the woman’s chosen plastic surgeon is outside the insurer’s network.

And while it is important to remember that patients

will be responsible for deductible and co-insurance payments as with any other care covered by their plans, it is also true that when insurance companies have denied claims or presented obstacles to coverage, challenging those decisions, up to the state’s attorney general if necessary, can be successful with skilled patient advocates who fight for you.

“The WHCRA is of enormous value to women,” says Dr. Chen. “It provides a crucial baseline benefit in helping women recover from breast cancer. The sponsors of the WHCRA in Congress understood that breast reconstruction was often pivotal for a woman’s physical and emotional well-being. In my practice, we work hard to ensure that

women can focus their energies on getting well without the additional burden of financial pressure, so we do everything we can to relieve our patients of the anxiety and stress of managing the relationship with their insurers.”

ill someone please tell me why we don’t take better care of ourselves? The other day I was at the checkout counter in a well-known home-supply store, and the cashier, a young woman, asked me to wait a minute. The problem I had, though, was that she took out from under the counter a very large bottle of a sugary, caffeine-laden soft drink.

She told me, “I know that I

shouldn’t be drinking this, but, like most of my people, I’m long on knowledge but short on willpower.” Wow! And she thought she was speaking for all of us! Of course I engaged her in conversation. I asked her why she drank the beverage if she knew it was bad for her. She said she was hooked. I suggested she try water, which would satisfy her thirst, and she agreed it would be just as easy to have a tall bottle of water under the counter. Then she told me she was a borderline diabetic and smoked three packs of cigarettes a day!

Well, that put it over the top for me. Now, I am not one to tell others how to live their lives; but I wanted to know why an intelligent, beautiful woman would take those chances with her life. Do you know that she went on to tell me that she was a licensed dietician? That ad-

mission really got to me, because here is this woman who is all the things I mentioned earlier and, on top of it all, she knows better!
