BUSINESS COMPETITION FOCUSES ON BLACK WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

dyssey Media’s ‘Keys to Success’ Elevates Black Women-owned Businesses

By Lauren Poteat (NNPA Newswire Contributor) In an effort to increase opportunities for Black women entrepreneurs, Odyssey Media launched “Keys to Success: Access to Capital,” a $25,000 business pitch competition and digital workshop series for women of color who own and operate small businesses.

The Coca-Cola Company’s “5by20 Initiative” supported Odyssey Media in the launch of the competition and workshop series.

The digital workshop series, which is available until May 5, features three different 45-minute segments that walk participants through applica-

tions for traditional loans, alternative financing, strengthening their financial image, and revitalizing company brands.

Participants must view the entire digital workshop series and complete the application process by May 5 at 10 p.m. EST to be eligible for the $25,000 grand prize.

A press official with Odyssey Media, a Black-owned marketing and communications company, said that the business pitch competition, is only open to businesses that are certified minorityand women-owned, or are in the process of getting these certifications, and have been established at least three years.

While this trend proves to be promising, only 14 out of the 30 percent of women-owned businesses in the U.S. are run by minority women.

The Odyssey Network Business Retreat, scheduled for May 22-May 26 at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, located off the northeast coast of Florida, is the finale event for the program. The retreat will feature keynote addresses from top-level businesswomen of color, panel discussions and wellness activities, according to a press official with Odyssey Media. The event is open to the finalists of the business competition.

said that the annual Odyssey Network Business Retreat will give participants the opportunity to receive on-site coaching and to rehearse their pitches in front of body language specialists. McCants added that the experience is a “fabulous opportunity” for businesses at any stage.

Secrets to Saving on Your Summer City Vacation

ities attract people for different reasons, which is partly why cities are such popular vacation destinations.

Summer is one of the best times to visit, as the long days give you extra hours of sunlight for exploration and many cities host a variety of free activities. The busy season can mean rising prices, but there are a few city-specific savings tactics that can take some of the strain off your budget.

Look for insiders’ knowledge about the city.

Many major cities are covered by bloggers who focus on how to enjoy the city on the cheap. You could start your planning by researching online with the keywords “free or cheap” and the city’s name. Some

of the well-organized websites will even let you filter events by date, cost and your interests.

Also check the city’s local newspaper sites for lists of free or cheap events.

During the summer, many cities have free outdoor concerts and movie screenings; you can pack a picnic dinner and enjoy the warm weather and show.

Get around the city like a local. It might make sense to take an occasional cab, but some cities have robust public transportation systems. Take a few minutes to study the city’s layout before arriving and don’t be afraid to ask locals for advice or directions.

If you’re in town for more than a few days, look into time-based public transportation passes.

For example, you can get a seven-day Unlimited Ride MetroCard for subway and bus rides in New York City for $32. (There’s $1 new-card fee if you’re not refilling an existing card.)

You can even use it on the crosstown buses that can quickly get you from one side of Central Park to the other.

Explore new cuisine.

One of my favorite parts about visiting a city is trying the restaurants. Whether you save up and enjoy one of the city’s finest eateries or find a hole-in-thewall hidden gem, there’s something for everyone.

Luckily, many cities’ must-try foods are on the inexpensive side. Chicago’s hot dogs, Portland’s doughnuts and Austin’s tacos all often cost less than

$5. You can also look for lists of cheap and delicious eats alongside the free-entertainment tips from frugal bloggers and local papers.

High-end restaurants will inevitably be pricey, but if it’s on your “mustdo” list, there could be ways to save. Some restaurants offer less expensive brunches or early evening tasting menus, or you might be able to grab a small bite and a drink at the bar rather than a full meal.

Find the deals if you’re going to shop. Some people see shopping as an intrinsic part of a vacation, and cities are often home to chains’ flagship stores, boutiques and specialty shops. The wide variety of options could tempt you

Guardians of the Galaxy 2, too?

.A.Williams: “Marvel Studios had had a string of hits with their various Avenger-related flicks, but I thought they were pushing their luck releasing 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie. I knew the oft-cancelled comic.

Most people had never heard of the team.

Well, Marvel’s “luck push” with the team most hadn’t heard of gave them 2014’s highest grossing film. And they just hit the Box Office jackpot again when “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” opened Friday.

Created in 1969, the Guardians have undergone varied mythos and line-ups. In the current comics and the new film sequel, the team’s core is: Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) a walking, lovable tree with a... limited vocabulary (though better than most trees’); Drax (played by

Andrew Lis: My first exposure to what would become the Guardians of the Galaxy was in the 1980s, with the “Rocket Raccoon” mini-series written

by Bill Mantlo, with art by Mike Mignola & Al Gordon. This wasn’t a straight Guardians series nor even a traditional Marvel comic. Based on a Beatles song, “Rocket Raccoon” was about an anthropomorphic raccoon with a walrus sidekick doing battle using rocket roller skates and laser guns in a corner of the universe. Mignola had a taste for the interesting and offbeat, and his art was unmistakable. After those four issues, Rocket rarely popped up for years.

This obscure origin speaks volumes about “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The characters that drive this now billion-dollar franchise were all cast-offs, background color for the more interesting, bigger-named characters of the Marvel Universe.

Drax was a minor annoyance for the Avengers. Gamora was usually seen hanging out with other brightly colored, mini-

mally-clothed heroes and villains. Star-Lord was created, abandoned, briefly resurrected by “X-Men” scribe Chris Claremont, only to be abandoned again when Claremont’s tale seemed to borrow too much from a Robert Heinlein story, which nearly got Marvel sued.

And Groot was a 1950s-style tree monster! Take these humble origins, add in 70s-80s music,

and get what many are saying is the “best Marvel movie” with its sequel the “most anticipated Marvel film, ever.” Incredible!

LAW: The Avengers are primarily comprised of highly accomplished, respected, “A-list” heroes. “Guardians” writers could’ve portrayed their team that way too, but wisely admitted what we all knew: they were no one’s first choice… for anything! But since we have all experienced the feeling of being overlooked for something we felt right for (a job, a crush, etc.), the Guardians’ underdog status made them relatable.

Lis: Despite the scale of the film, the best part of “Guardians Vol. 1” was the characters.

Rocket’s temperament. Drax’s literal interpretation of metaphoric sayings. Star-Lord’s obsession with the old-school mix tape from his mom. Gamora’s unpredictable presence.

FILM

The deep bond between Groot and Rocket. They’re accessible and funny. “Guardians Vol. 1” did an amazing job moving the plot forward using its cast of cast-offs. With no real hierarchy of popularity, director James Gunn was able to spotlight their personalities with an obvious attention to character first. It reminded me of what I love about well-written comics: every issue may be someone’s first, so a good story must be well-crafted, engaging and character driven, so even if you don’t know everything going on, you appreciate and buy into who’s driving the action. That’s what sells backpacks and comic books: caring about the heroes.

Even if they’re “second rate” compared to the Avengers, the story made me care, made me laugh, and made me come back for “Volume 2!” Plus, Groot!

Four Tips to Sleep Better During Allergy Season

S

pring is the season of renewal. Plants and trees start to rebound from the harsh winter that claimed most of their leaves and vegetation. Birds return from their Southern vacations, serenade us with their morning songs and rebuild their nests in preparation for new arrivals.

Unfortunately, there is another renewal that many people don’t look forward to in the spring: the return of hay fever season along with symptoms such as sneezing and sniffling that can give you sleepless nights.

In an allergy survey conducted by HayMax (www. haymax.us), 92 percent of respondents said their hay fever symptoms affect their work, school or daily routine, which includes sleep patterns.

“The trick to sleeping

well when you suffer from hay fever is to reduce the amount of pollen getting into your body at night,” says Max Wiseberg, creator of HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm.

People can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction, he says, but once this amount is exceeded – called the trigger

level – hay fever symptoms start to occur. Stay below this level at night, you won’t get the symptoms and your sleep won’t be affected. Go above it and that’s when the trouble starts.

rics clean. Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds and fabrics, such as bed covers and curtains, to remove pollen, dust and pet allergen particles. Wash bedding regularly to remove allergens and dry them indoors rather than on a clothes line to prevent pollen particles being blown onto them by the wind.

Keep the house closed from the outside world.

Close windows and use an air conditioner, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to capture pollen and dust particles, as well as cool and circulate the air.

Have a nightly routine before bed. Shower at night before sleeping to remove pollen particles and pet hair from your hair and body.

Clear the nasal passages with water, or use a saline nasal spray, to clear pollen from the nose. Finally, apply an allergen barrier balm to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes to trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they enter the body.

Ensure that pets are well groomed. If you own a pet, shampoo it as much as possible to remove pet allergens and pollen particles, or ban it

s owner and general manager for the semi-professional New York Lightning basketball team, Willie Negron is always looking for opportunities for his talent to showcase their skills in hopes of landing a position on a professional team. That opportunity came up recently, as Coach Willie, as he is affectionately known as, sent four of his players to a recent showcase in Mount Vernon, New York.

Gamble Sports Management held its fourth annual men’s basketball showcase at Hopperstown earlier this month with coaches, agents, and scouts in attendance from as far away as Europe and Latin America. The

showcases are designed to offer college seniors and free agents a chance to secure contracts with overseas teams. We spoke with Charles Gamble, Esq of Gamble Sports Management about the showcase.

“What we try to do here is give these young men the best opportunity possible to play overseas.” This includes streaming of games, sending player profiles to overseas and NBA Developmental League organizations, and more. Over the last three years, they had 12 players play in Peru straight from the camp, with more success following.

Fred Staton - 102 Years Young Still Blowing His Saxaphone

T

here are folk you may know who do what they do, marvelously. There are those who do what they do, miraculously. Surely, Fred Staton is among those high on the totem pole of musical miracles, if indeed there was such a category to proclaim.

Born on Valentine’s Day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 102 years ago, Fred has been a sweet gift to generations. The elder brother of popular jazz/blues artiste Dakota Staton, Fred has sown his own legacy quilt with jazz, blues and gospel music around the world. With two sons and numerous grands and great grands, it has been said that he refers

to his saxophone as “his wife”.

You can Google information about Fred Staton and make note of the jazz greats he has accompanied, such as Errol Garner, Art Blakely, Horace Silver, composer Billy Strayhorn and a cache of others.

Fred is the treasurer of the Friendly 50’s Club of the New Amsterdam Music Association for Black Musicians in Harlem. Fred & The Jazz Gents perform on the first Sundays in November in support of scholarships for up and coming high school seniors majoring in music and the performing arts.

land’s Restaurant were a succulent success for years as a result of Fred Staton and his band “Sounds of Deliverance”. When Copeland’s closed its doors, Fred toured to Sweden and Denmark, where his name remains legendary.

As the naysayer nineties birthdays rolled in, Fred’s health began to fail, bringing a halt to overseas travel. No medical advice or age concerns could deter Fred. He was not considering retirement. We’ve been happily married for three years. He takes good care of us and is strict with our budget. He makes sure everything is covered and written down and by the 3rd of the month all of our bills are paid. He deployed eight months ago, and of course before he left, he gave me strict instructions to follow regarding our money and the budget, which I have tried to stick with. Since, I have a job and I contribute to our household and I have money left over, as well, I decided to buy a new car.

And we ain’t talking about buying a set of pillows, brand new dishes or a set of bath towels. You purchased a car against your husband’s wishes and now you wanna know how to tell him? Well, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that once you pull up to pick him up, LOL. That’s when your selfish shenanigans will come to light.

It seems to me you can do one of two things. Take it back or display your decision on paper. Your husband sounds like a serious budget man and I ain’t

mad at him. Show him the money and where you can save from here and there to cover your monthly payments and insurance coverage. That’s all he wants to see. I know you gotta job and you got extra money, which is what you’re trying to use to justify your behavior, but, uh huh, nah, that won’t cut it.

When it comes to money, your husband must be able to trust you. You and your ego have broken that bond.

Unless you bought the Porsche that he’s always dreamed about, it will take a long time for the two of you to recover from this.

You might as well try to fit your bottom in a “forgive me please” baby seat, snap that seatbelt on and hold on, because you’re in for a bumpy ride!

he Mt.Hermon Baptist Church paid tribute to Professor William H. Collins on his transition last week. Professor Collins was 85 years old. He had served as Minister of Music at Mt.Hermon for the past 58 years.

Professor Collins was also the founder of the Collins Music School. Many of professor Collins’ students attended and participated

in the home going service.

Professor Collins legacy will continue as will the example he set for Christian service and devotion to God, the church and the community. The well attended service was fitting tribute to a great man of God. It was my pleasure to have know and worked with him for more than 40 years.

You see your favorite foods, and they carry you toward lunch before you even realize you’re hungry.

When you’re faced with danger, they take you in the right direction, away and safe. And when you read “Super Freak: The Life of Rick James” by Peter Benjaminson, your feet just gotta dance.

James Ambrose Johnson Jr. was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 1, 1948, into a family filled with talent and power: little Rick (no explanation for the nickname) was related to politicians and journalists, actors and performers. Even his mother had once been

Like so many biographers of music stars, author Peter Benjaminson includes too much here: too many names dropped, too much minutiae on performances and, when it comes to Rick James’ private life, too much information. Indeed, Benjaminson’s occasional lack of discretion and his explicitness are cringe-worthy.

And yet, there are some nice surprises here: Benjaminson doesn’t try to gloss over James’ problems, legally, or with drugs or women. This book’s early chapters set up a good story, which is readable even

A former alter boy, he was kicked out of the program for being “too hyper,” started running away from home at age five, lost his virginity at age nine, and began experimenting with drugs. As for school, it was something he “tried to avoid entirely.”

At 16, Rick joined the U.S. Navy, but he skipped out on his obligation and slipped into Canada in 1964. There, he found other musicians who let him perform with them, and his talent “was blazingly obvious.” He founded bands, found sponsorship, and set his sights on Motown, where he was turned away at least twice before he was finally accepted to work as a producer and songwriter.

With his talents so openly on display, Rick began to work his way toward his goal of having a best-seller with Motown. He wrote, performed, got that hit, and was hired to produce for Diana Ross, a gig he turned down to work with Teena

Marie.

Unfortunately, he didn’t turn down the drugs that had become a part of his life, nor did he turn down the many women who clamored for his attention on the road.

In the end, it was the former that contributed to his death.

In the era of uncertainty concerning the future of the Affordable Care Act, one thing is certain: ultimately the future of ACA depends upon the power of the people and how we intend to use it to make change.

It’s quite ironic they’ve named the new bill the American Healthcare Act (AHA), as there really isn’t anything American about throwing over 24 million people across the

country off of health care (including over 3 million in New York State) while providing $600 billion dollars in tax cuts for the rich.

Shouldn’t it be called HFR Act – or “Healthcare for the Rich”? Better yet, the SPP Act – “Sick Plan for the Poor”.

The good news: Despite efforts by some on Capitol Hill to repeal and replace ACA, we the people of this nation of all genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds have an opportunity to unite and fight against the AHA on behalf of our nation’s most vulnerable citizens – our elderly, low income, children with disabilities and individuals suffering with chronic illness including mental health and

substance abuse for whom AHA specifically puts at a terrible disadvantage.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) and the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH) recently sent letters to President-elect Trump and Congressional leaders which read: “Losses of this magnitude cannot be sustained and will adversely impact patients’ access to care, decimate hospitals’ and health systems’ ability to provide services, weaken local economies… and result in massive job losses.”

Essentially under the new law Medicaid would be phased out by 2019 – gone, kaput! This $880 billion dollar cut would affect more than 70 mil-
