Gratitude: The Simple Way to Motivate and Inspire Your Employees

New York State Black Chamber of Commerce hosts meet and greet in Harlem

any traits are associated with strong leaders. They’re confident, they’re passionate and they’re decisive.

But one critical leadership characteristic that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves is “gratitude” – letting employees know that their hard work is appreciated.

In other words, the best leaders know how to say, “Thank you.” They also realize that, to truly show gratitude to others, they need to take time to be grateful for themselves and for where they are today.

From there, the gratitude emanates out to the others around them, making the entire organization stronger in the process.

“The power of any organization is the collective energy of the people,” says Brad Deutser, president of Deutser LLC (www.deutser.com), a culture consultancy that advises leaders and organizations facing transition, growth or crisis.

“Strong leaders recognize that it’s their people who form the soul of the company and who are directly responsible for the success of the organization, and often the leader.”

When employees feel that they’re working for a leader who is engaged and is thankful for their efforts, he says, it creates a better environment and instills loyalty. And, it drives performance inside and outside the company.

“If you don’t take the time to thank people and appreciate people, I think

you’re missing the greatest opportunity to connect with them,” Deutser says.

“People respond to it and it makes the work that much more meaningful to them and that much more impactful to you. It’s one of the best motivators and it just plain makes them happy.”

And when employees are happier, that can lead to even greater productivity.

Shawn Achor, acclaimed Harvard researcher and author of The Happiness Advantage, has demonstrated through his research that when people work with a positive mindset they perform better in the face of a challenge and every business outcome improves.

Deutser says a few things worth knowing about gratitude and its effect on an organization’s culture include: • Authenticity is essential. People aren’t easily fooled by insincerity. Gratitude is something leaders need to really feel, not just be feigning because they’ve been told it’s important. “If your gratitude doesn’t come across as real or if it’s not founded in something you truly are grateful for, then the inauthenticity shows through,” Deutser says.

• Gratitude is a big perspective shifter. When the boss routinely expresses gratitude, employees are inspired to take challenging situations and reframe them in a way that reminds them something positive and good comes from them. “It’s about creating positive energy,” Deutser

says. “It’s about creating a positive workforce. And, it’s about understanding the direct correlation between positivity and performance.”

• Your willingness to show gratitude can rub off on others. “Gratitude is very contagious,” Deutser says. “When people in an organization see their leader doing it, then you’ll find that they will follow along and that makes your organization’s culture even more positive. We live in a world where we’re bombarded with negativity. And when you inject gratitude, being grateful for what is good, for what is pure, for what is true, for what is real, for what is right, you’re able to change the environment.”

“At the end of the day, the more appreciated people feel the more willing they are to do a great job the next time,” Deutser says. “I don’t care who you are, you like being told you’ve done well and that you’re appreciated. That goes for the leader, too.”

Brad Deutser is president of Deutser LLC (www.deutser.com), a consulting firm that advises leaders and organizations about achieving clarity, especially in times of transition, growth or crisis. He is an expert at leveraging culture to drive business performance, and his firm has counseled organizations ranging from the Fortune 100 to nonprofits. Deutser launched his firm in 2002.

he New York State Black Chamber of Commerce (NYSBCC) hosted a meet and greet at Angel of Harlem located at 2272 Frederick Douglass Blvd on the corner of 122nd street on the last Saturday of February.

The event, hosted by NYSBCC President, J. Alexander Martin, VP of Finance Bryant Arthur, and Membership Chair Kowana Harding, brought together dozens of Harlemites to network, enjoy good food, specially priced cocktails, and music for the evening. The Harlem News was on hand, as were members of the Bradhurst Merchants Association and Harlem business owners LaChena Clark and Latisha Kenya Murray.

On their website, NYCBCC states the following: “The New York State Black Chamber of Commerce performs an essential role in the economic viability of New York. As affirmed in its mission statement, the NYSBCC is dedicated to creating economic parity in corporate business, fair representation in governmental policy and sustainable job development for African American communities throughout New York State,

We spoke to Arthur about the organization and the event.

“It was our goal to have an event that created a social networking atmosphere for established business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to connect and also

learn more about the resources and upcoming initiatives of the New York State Black Chamber of Commerce. Our goal was accomplished and we are very excited for what’s to come.”

Arthur talked more about the event. “Our Meet and Greet Saturday was an absolute success. It was great to be in a room of established business owners and entrepreneurs from various industries such as entertainment, nonprofit, and financial services.

I’m a firm believer that economic empowerment is the new civil rights movement and by strengthening our small business community, it strengthens us as a people. I encourage everyone to join the New York State Black Chamber of Commerce and support us in the fight to improve our urban communities by economic means.”

Congressman Adriano Espaillat Celebrates Women’s History Month

arch is Women’s History Month and U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in commemoration of women’s achievement throughout the history of our nation.

Women’s History Month has been celebrated in America since 1987.

Turning the Tide on Homelessness

s a doctor I learned to be relentless when treating my patients. So I am proud of the relentless effort the de Blasio administration has put into taking on the homelessness crisis. As a New Yorker, I share the frustration of many that we haven’t made enough progress.

We have already stopped the decades-long rise of people coming into shelters with an aggressive set of programs, including rental assistance, street outreach, affordable housing, and expanded legal services for those facing eviction. But we must do more.

Now, we will create a more rational and effective shelter system that responds to homelessness borough by borough, neighborhood by neighborhood, human being by human being.

New Yorkers will see fewer shelters. We will end the use of all cluster apartments by 2021 and all commercial hotels by 2023, reducing the number of shelter facilities by nearly 45%. New shelters will be cleaner, safer, and

Vol. 22, No 10 March 9. 2017 situated strategically to help residents stay near their old neighborhoods and supplied with services to help residents back into stable housing.

This isn’t a quick fix, but it will turn the tide on a decades-old reality. From 1994 until 2014, the number of people living in shelters soared 115%. Years of rising rents combined with stagnating wages means that today, 70% of those in our shelters are families; 34% of them have at least one member working.

Reacting to this crisis, the City sent people wherever a shelter bed was open, even if that bed was far from their

old home. When shelters overflowed, people were sent to more isolated hotel rooms or apartments in buildings with renters. Far from their old lives in shelters that lacked appropriate services, shelter residents had no easy path back to stability.

Our reformed shelter system keeps people in the boroughs they call home and offers career counseling, health counseling and more to help them back on their feet. This approach, coupled with other efforts, will reduce the number of homeless people in shelters by 2,500 over the next five years – the first

reduction in a decade.

We are also committed to reforming how we notify communities about new shelters, giving advance notice of new facilities and creating an advisory board in every new shelter to handle local complaints. In turn, we are asking neighborhoods to be our partners, helping to make new shelter sites work and helping to house people in need from their own community.

Working together, this city of 8.5 million people will make sure that no New Yorker has to face homelessness alone.

Some people might say that Harlem is not strictly a minority community anymore. The truth of the matter is although Harlem was at one time a predominately minority community most of the residents did not own property. They were renting apartments and owning a home was only a remote dream.

For years, homeownership was considered an option only for the affluent members in the community. In the early 1980s when the city was trying to give away the boarded-up brownstones, only a few people seemed interested in pur-

But we could have overcome those obstacles by working together as a group. That remains our biggest obstacle today; working together as a cohesive community rather than independently.

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan). The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz.

Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santiago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films

on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works.

“The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains. In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her approach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities. Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

Keith Thurman defeats Danny Garcia in front of star-studded crowd

By Derrel Jazz Johnson he freezing temperatures of the first Saturday in March didn’t keep boxing fans from packing into Barclays Center to watch Keith Thurman hand Danny Garcia the first loss of his career while also winning the WBC Welterweight Title and raising his record to a perfect 28-0.

Boxing and entertainment royalty like Sugar Ray Leonard, 50 Cent, Lennox Lewis, Dave Chappelle, Adrien Broner, Romeo Santos, Andre Ward, Phil Simms, Errol Spence, and many more were among the record crowd of 16,533 fans who witnessed Thurman retain his WBA Welterweight Championship while resting away Garcia’s title in a split decision victory.

While one judge saw Garcia, now 33-1, winning

the fight 115-113, two judges had Thurman as the victor, 116-112 and 115-113 in the fight that aired on CBS. Thurman stunned Garcia with punches early and often but used a confusing strategy toward the second half of the fight that almost cost him the victory.

“I thought I out-boxed him,” Thurman said, adding “I thought it was a clear victory, but Danny came to fight. I knew when it was split and I had that wide spread, I knew it had to go to me.” In response to the strategy the second half of the fight, Thurman said “I was not giving the fight away. I felt like we had a nice lead, we could cool down. I felt like we were controlling the three-minute intervals every round. My defense was effective – he

wasn’t landing.”

While Garcia wasn’t happy with the loss, he took it graciously. “I came up short tonight,” Garcia said, adding “I thought I was the aggressor…But it didn’t go my way.” Garcia now has his eye on what’s next. “I’ll come back strong like a true champion. I would love a rematch to get these titles.”

Boxing is about hitting, not running. Danny tried to be the aggressor, but Keith was moving around too much.” The younger Garcia supported the statement of his father. “I knew running would be his game plan.

Everyone knew that was his game plan. I thought I won and that’s it.”

Thurman elaborated on why he was victorious.

“You’re not just fighting

your opponent sometimes, you’re fighting the judges.

They have their own perspective. I know I was backing up and being defensive, I feel like a lot of Danny’s power punches were ineffective. I was controlling the fight from the outside.

There were some rounds that I was dominating.”

The night was a huge success for CBS, Brooklyn Boxing, Premier Boxing Champions, and the ven-

ue, Barclays Center. After a successful boxing card in January and UFC pay per view in February, Barclays Center will keep the boxing action coming next month with Andre Berto taking on Shawn Porter on Saturday, April 22. The New York Urban League was founded by a group of prominent New Yorkers concerned with the poor state of blacks migrating to New York City from the south. From its inception it provided employment and connections for migrating blacks bridging the adjustment from the agricultural/rural life to the industrial urban center.

Each decade following, “The League” provided critical services such as emergency aid for the unemployed during the Great Depression; formed the Committee for Interracial Voluntary Hospitals to provide care and work in local hospitals; negotiated the opening of employment for blacks in the airline, brewing, and baking industries; created “Street Academies” that became a national model for high school students; published the first State of Black New York report; and created its signature events including Frederick Douglass Dinner, Whitney M. Young Jr. Classic, and Champion of Diversity Breakfast among many other milestones.

Comptroller Scott Stringer Hosts Annual Trailblazer Awards Honors

H

undreds of people packed MIST Harlem Feb. 28 for the annual event, which honored National Action Network Chief Counsel Michael Hardy, former NYC Comptroller Bill Thompson and First Corinthian Baptist Church Executive Pastor the Rev. Dr. LaKeesha Walrond.

“We call it the Trailblazer Awards and we wanted to honor people who have shaken up the system,” Stringer said. “This is not a quiet crew that we’re honoring here.”

First up was Hardy, who has represented victims of police brutality, hosted free legal clinics and helped get former President Barack Obama’s Clemency Project

off the ground.

“In the era of Trump, this battle is gonna get more intense…and we need a many like Michael Hardy paving the way,” Stringer said.

Hardy said it was an “honor and a privilege” to be recognized for his accomplishments.

“When you come into this work,” he said, “you don’t do it for a pat on the back.”

Thompson, the city’s first black comptroller, was the next honoree, and used his awards speech as a call to action in the era of the Trump Administration.

“We all have to stand up and we all have to be trailblazers so that people coming behind us will have better opportunities,” he said.

“The fight is now. If we step back, then the work of the ones who came before us will be wasted.”

Last but not least was the Rev. Warlord, who Stringer said got the award for her dedication to education and to children. Before she joined First Corinthian, Walrond was a school teacher in North Carolina

“It’s been an honor to serve in such a dynamic city,” Walrond said, and told the crowd that they would be a “blessing to others.”

Stringer, whose office is charged with safeguarding city workers pensions and settling New York City’s

economic agenda, also used the awards ceremony to highlight “economic injustice” that is still disproportionately affecting communities of color in the city. He said that the city does business with less than five percent of women or minority-owned businesses.

“That has to change

Three Reasons Your Small Business Should Offer an Employee-Retirement Plan

S

mall business owners probably think they have enough headaches already, what with meeting payroll, dealing with government regulations and pleasing customers.

Setting up a retirement plan for their employees is just extra red tape – and possibly expense – they can do without.

But creating such a plan is more doable than they may realize and even comes with benefits for the small business and its owner, says Andrew Denney, founder and CEO of Prosperity Financial Group (www.pfgmidwest.com).

“I’ve worked with some employee retirement plans where there was in excess of $500 million in the plan,” Denney says. “At the other end, I’ve seen businesses with as few as 10 employees set up a plan.”

Yet as a group, small businesses tend to forgo retirement plans.

For example, only 22 percent of workers at firms with fewer than 10 employees report having access to

a workplace savings plan or pension, compared with 74 percent at firms with 500 or more, according to a Pew Charitable Trusts report.

Employee-sponsored 401(k) and IRA plans are among the more popular options for businesses that do offer a retirement benefit. Those savings plans allow the employees to deposit money routinely in the accounts with a deduction taken out of their paychecks.

Since these are tax-deferred retirement plans, the employees see a lower income-tax bill at the end of the year. Some employers also offer a company match, providing an even heftier balance to the accounts.

But employees aren’t the only ones who benefit. Denney says there’s also an upside for the small business owner, including: • Employee recruiting and retention. Any business wants to hang on to good employees and offering a retirement plan helps do that. They’ll be happier knowing they’re more likely to have some

financial security in retirement. A retirement benefit also serves as a recruiting tool. Imagine a job candidate who’s weighing similar offers from two businesses, but one has a retirement plan and the other doesn’t. “It separates you from the pack,” Denney says.

• A lower tax bill. The business potentially can reduce its tax burden because a company’s contributions to the retirement plan are tax deductible. In some cases, the businesses also may qualify for a tax credit to help offset the cost of starting the plan, according to the IRS. • An opportunity to invest in your own retirement. Like their employees, small business owners may not want to work forever and need to set aside money for their own retirements. They’ll enjoy the same tax-deferred benefits the employees do as they build that nest egg.

“It’s worthwhile for a small business owner to investigate whether an employee retirement plan is more

attainable than they might realize,” Denney says. “A financial professional with experience in setting up such plans can explain to them the advantages and disadvantages, and suggest which plan would work best for their situation.”

The Art of War is Peace

I

was introduced to Sun Tzu’s ancient Chinese classic The Art of War in 1968. I was in the United States Army stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. At this time military intelligence was trying to find answers to explain how an army of farmers were about to defeat the mighty U.S. military forces in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh’s (founder of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) famous

answer was “we are defeating the mighty imperialist forces by using Sun Tzu’s Art of War.” That statement created a whole new generation of strategists that follow the teachings of Master Sun. Over the years I have become a great admirer of the strategic concepts of this mysterious Taoist warrior-philosopher. The strategic concepts found in Sun Tzu’s work have had a major influence not only in strategic military training but also in the national and international business communities as well.

When teaching my course on the Chinese classic like the Art of War

and the I Ching at The City College of New York, I find students at first have some difficulty in understanding how the true art of war is peace. According to the teachings of Master Sun, How to win without fighting is the foundation of his strategy.

I always recommend reading the Art of War translated by Thomas Cleary, who explains Master Sun’s teachings this way: “This ideal strategy whereby one could win without fighting, accomplish the most by doing the least, bears the characteristic stamp of Taoism, the ancient tradition of knowledge that fostered both the healing

arts and the martial arts in China.”

In Cleary’s introduction he captures the spirit of this classic book of strategy by writing about an ancient Taoist story where a lord of China asked his physician, a member of a family of healers, which of them was the most skilled in the art.

The physician, whose reputation was such that his name became synonymous with medical science in China, replied, “My eldest brother sees the spirit of sickness and removes it before it takes shape, so his name does not get out of the house.

cures sickness when it is still extremely minute, so his name does not get out of the neighborhood. As for me, I puncture veins, prescribe potions, and massage skin, so from time to time my name gets out and is heard among the lords.”

This story follows Master Sun’s concept of deep knowledge. According to the writings of Master Sun, “Deep knowledge is to be aware of disturbance before disturbance, to be aware of danger before danger, to be aware of destruction before destruction, to be aware of calamity before calamity. Strong action is training the body without

being burdened by the body, exercising the mind without being used by the mind, working in the world without being affected by the world, carrying out task without being obstructed by tasks.”

Master Sun also writes that “with deep knowledge of principle, one can change disturbance into order, change danger into safety, change destruction into survival, change calamity into fortune. By strong action on the Way, one can bring the body to the realm of longevity, bring the mind to the sphere of mystery, bring the world to great peace, and bring tasks to great fulfillment.”

The true Art of War is peace both external and internal.

ll around the country we’ve had strange weather patterns. I can remember always being able to count on running to Los Angeles to bask in the omnipresent sunshine and warm Santa Ana breezes whenever I wanted to escape New York’s snow and freezing temperatures. Now I find that more often than not, I need my winter coat in Los Angeles and that New York temperatures are warmer than

in sunny southern California.

But have faith! Regardless of the type of weather we are experiencing, spring is on the way! Have the changing climates reeked havoc on your skin? Perhaps you’re beginning to notice that your skin is dry, itchy and flaking. You know that beneath the dryness is a brighter more beautiful layer of skin, but you just can’t get to it! It’s covered by a thin later of-and yes I’m going to say it-ASH! If you were a snake, you could count on crawling out of your skin in the spring, but alas, that’s not an option for us. So what can you do to improve the look and feel of your skin?

All you men out there listen up! These tips aren’t just for women; you’re not immune to dry skin problems either. You may be reluctant to do anything about it, but flaky

skin is unattractive on anyone.

If you like feeling soft skin, you can bet she does too. Go for it!

Before you do anything remotely cosmetic, check with your dermatologist or doctor.

Sometimes skin problems are the result of food allergies or contact dermatitis or indicate other, more serious medical problems. Only your medical provider knows the true difference between just plain old ashy skin and a serious rash that may benefit from medical attention.

I know that you don’t want to hear this next suggestion, but it works: Your skin needs to be hydrated, and the best hydrator in the world is water.

So drink plenty of water and again, check with your doctor to see how many glasses he/she recommends that you drink each day. Soda doesn’t count, nor does the water in

your coffee or tea. Plain old water is fine. Water helps flush your system and remove toxins from your body, as well as keeping your skin moist so it maintains elasticity.

This may sound like a silly question, but are you using a lotion or water-soluble body oil after you bathe? A good soothing lotion or oil will help to seal in the moisture, and besides it just feels great on your skin. If you’re allergic to fragrance, look for a fragrance-free lotion for sensitive skin. Years ago, I remember dropping a closed jar of Vaseline into my hot bath so that I could experience “Vaseline La-Hot.” I loved massaging the warm melted petroleum jelly into my skin and the feeling of a smooth satiny softness.

Remember the snake I mentioned earlier? Well, molt-

ing is what I would call the ultimate exfoliation process, but you can exfoliate as well.

There are several inexpensive products you can buy off the shelf to easily remove dry skin, from salt scrubs to exfoliating lotions and creams. My favorite way to exfoliate gently is to combine baking soda with a gentle lotion-type cleanser.

It’s great for your entire body, doesn’t scratch your skin, and washes down the shower drain easily. You can use a soft washcloth to gently rub the dry skin away. Remember, your skin is a very delicate organ and does not appreciate being scrubbed too hard.

And don’t forget those elbows and knees they need love, too.

Summer follows spring, so if you want your skin to look good in those muscle-man tees, swim trunks, sleeveless tops, shorts and miniskirts, you’ll want glowing, ash-free skin. It’s possible if you start now. Think about it. See you

The Equipping Conference has been designed to help encourage, strengthen, motivate, and equip the saints for the work of ministry as each one of those saints goes back to serve in his/her church. Politically and socially, things had been shaky for some time, in part because of a two-tiered society that wasn’t functional anymore.

Sirleaf attempted to continue working in-place but her connection to Liberia’s controversial president Tolbert made her vulnerable, so she applied for a job in America with the World Bank.

It, and that she was a native Liberian, probably ultimately saved her life.

In 1980, following the government’s overthrow and Tolbert’s murder, Sirleaf continued being vigilant while working for the new President as well as for the World Bank. She knew she could do more if she stayed in-country during Liberia’s civil war, but her eventual outspokenness was consequently perilous: for her rebellious actions, she was jailed in 1985, which outraged the country’s market-women.

They helped get her released. It would be two decades before they’d get her elected.

Whew. Reading “Madame President” very well could wring you out.

Starting with birth and a basic history of Liberia, author Helene Cooper takes us through a half-century of turmoil with a woman that, considering what surrounded her, possessed grit and guts. Cooper tells Sirleaf’s story as one that’s triumphant but also brutal and raw, with violence in a little too much gruesome detail; still, despite those parts that are uncomfortable to read, they inherently tell readers more about who Sirleaf is and why her Presidency is so remarkable.

Though you’ll cringe often when reading this, it’s a book that’ll make you want to cheer, too. World history buffs will truly enjoy “Madame President,” as will fans of international politics and women’s issues. And if that’s you, then it follows that you’ll love it, too.

Roughly translated, that’s what a local prophet said about Ellen Johnson when she was born in Liberia in October 1938.

Those words were repeated in praise and in sarcasm as Johnson grew up, but no one had any idea then how right the man would be.

Though illiteracy was very common in Liberia, Johnson’s parents strove to educate their children in a manner befitting their upper-class status. Johnson expected to go to Europe for college but when her father fell ill, she knew that college would no longer be possible.

Instead, she married Doc Sirleaf, a man several years her senior.

The babies started coming almost immediately; shortly after their fourth son was born, Sirleaf and her husband seized an opportunity to go to America, to Wisconsin for college.

Leaving her children was difficult for Sirleaf, but it wouldn’t be the last time.

It would, however, be a few years before she’d leave her abusive husband.

AN DO TIP Week #49 Press Reset to Revive your Health – Part 1 A couple of weeks ago, I noticed I was feeling a bit too fatigued. Then came the headache. Now granted, yes I had been working incredibly hard juggling a teaching schedule, projects, engagements, family and life in general. But for some odd reason this felt different. I wasn’t sick, I just felt…“off” and could not put my finger on it. I had recently had my annual physical which was great, so I decided to take a step

back and consider my activities and behaviors over the last couple of weeks.

I realized I had been eating out much more than usual. Granted while I wasn’t exactly chowing down on fried chicken and burgers, but whether it was roti, or arroz con habichuelas (beans and rice), being constantly “on the go,” I was eating out and not cooking my own food, with my own hands, using my own ingredients and spices.

I trusted my gut and instead of heading straight home I made a detour to my local supermarket where I chose: romaine lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, kiwi fruit (which contains more vitamin C than oranges), pears (excellent

source of fiber and potassium), organic Greek yogurt (100% pasture-raised organic yogurt helps ensure cows are not fed harmful GMO grain, given hormones or treated with antibiotics), sardines in olive oil (love my healthy fats), chick peas, frozen okra, organic eggs, and a vegetable-based low sodium canned soup with just a few ingredients I could actually classify as food, not chemicals.

I prepared a huge salad with a homemade salad dressing made with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a pinch of salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. I heated the okra and chickpeas and added it to the soup for a more robust meal. Dessert was a cup of lemongrass
