FROM RALLY TO POWER: THE CIVIC OBLIGATION OF YOUNG, BLACK LEADERS

W

ho would have thought that in less than 15 days, I would have to coordinate and manage 1,000 young, Black student leaders from over 24 cities on 17 buses in the name of gun reform and safety?

The reality is, sometimes the work chooses you.

I started my new job one day before the mass school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We’ve got over 650 active and registered NAACP chapters on high school and college campuses across the country. We are the only organization, period, that can reach that many Black, young, organized members.

Since February 14, 2018, the day of the Parkland shooting, I have followed these students who have built a national discus-

sion on the safety of young people at school in less than a month.

A movement that inspires, convicts and recruits people from across the country and now the world, to an issue that Black folks have been talking about for over a decade.

When gun violence happens in white communities, it’s always reported on as a mental issue or because they were racist. When gun violence happens in the Black community, it is because of poverty, underfunded schools, police brutality or gangs. This is

necessary to understand because the solution we are fighting for can’t just be regulations against automatic military style weapons. It has to be a holistic solution to make all communities safe.

The March for Our Lives is only a march for OUR lives if people meet at the intersection of mass school shootings, community violence, poverty, the War on Drugs, police brutality and White supremacy. From Trayvon Martin to Stephon Clark, this is not the first time we’ve raised the issues of gun violence, but for many reasons, this moment is where we find ourselves with the most leverage of “people power.”

When the opportunity presented itself for us to be involved and bring our members, I spoke with my boss and told him I would only sign up to help build

for the March if we got to do two things: First, I wanted to make sure that we weren’t just being used as representation at the march, but that we challenged the mainstream media, march organizers and organizational partners to think about the intersection of gun violence, when it comes to the Black community.

Second, it was important that this moment not turn into just another rally, but real opportunity for us to educate and engage future members about the organization.

Because a rally won’t end gun violence, I want my peers and young adults to make the clear connection from this issue to who should be held accountable for systemic and legislative change at the ballot box. That way, we know we showed up in

numbers not just for a great rally, but for the start of a great revolution.

It is my belief, that if all of the young folks from this march, the women’s march, the immigration movement and Black Lives Matter joined together for a strategic effort, we could change this country literally overnight.

We must use this as a moment to help young Black folks see that if we want real gun reform, if we want better public schools, if we want community policing then we MUST show up to the ballot box. This demonstration, for the NAACP Youth and College Division is not a free trip to a rally. It is the moment that we are using to build real power that will impact the political navigation of this country.

Black students have the solutions and the answers. We’re go-

ing to stop asking to be included in national movements, and just take over.

I am grateful to all of the staff, the partners and our donors who have helped make this vision possible. We can only use this moment to create bigger and better local victories for our people.

Cheers to the strong and fearless students from every community who have ever stood up to violence in their communities.

This march is a celebration of your leadership, and a call to action for those looking to change the world.

Schumer: We Marched; Now We Must Follow It with Action

tanding with young people after joining them in the ‘March for Our Lives’ march on his bike, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has a public challenge for U.S. Senate Majority Leader McConnell: bring bills to prevent gun violence to the floor of the U.S. Senate and allow debate. Schumer today demanded this get done with young student leaders standing by his side and announced how the Senate should and could begin debate on three priorities that can save lives: background checks, protection orders and assault weapons.

“This weekend, I marched alongside amazing kids and worried families who are doing things Congress and NRA loyalists have long refused:

forcing action on gun violence,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “Today, on the heels of this electric and inspiring movement, I make a new demand to the Majority Leader of the Senate, my friend, Mitch McConnell, and that is to bring bills that will prevent gun violence to the floor of the Senate, allow debate, and make clear that you hear the millions of young people and others who are demanding their government work on their behalf, not on the behalf of the NRA. What these young people are asking for is not hard; it is easy; and we must heed their call to stop dangerous people from getting, keeping and using guns to take away one innocent life after another.

This weekend, I rode my bike and I walked alongside

all of you, and now today, we put the wheels in motion to deliver for you. We may have marched yesterday but that was only the first step.

We must now follow this up with action. Congress must act, and I will work night and day to make that happen.”

Schumer’s first priority is to pass tough legislation that closes existing loopholes in the background check system, like the gun show loophole and internet sales loophole.

As the New York City Police Department can attest: most of New York City’s crime guns originate from states where individuals can evade a gun background check and purchase weapons with cash and no questions asked.

Schumer’s second prior-

ity is to pass legislation that allows for protective orders to temporarily disarm individuals who have shown credible signs of being a harm to themselves or to others.

Schumer’s third priority demands formal debate on assault weapons on the floor of the Senate. Schumer renewed these priorities as part of a new plea for a floor vote and debate because he said the pressure on Congress to act is unlike it has ever been and that young people—particularly the ones standing with Schumer—will not stand for gridlock on guns.

Schumer said his experience at the march in New York City yesterday and the clips, pictures and images from around the country prove one thing: the mo-

ment is now and Congress cannot ignore it.

Schumer authored the 1993 Brady Bill, which amended the Gun Control Act of 1968 to require background checks before a licensed gun dealer makes a sale. After the tragedy at Virginia Tech, Schumer worked with his colleagues in Congress to pass the National Incident Criminal Background Check System Improvement Act, which improved the system through which states provided the names of people who were adjudicated mentally ill or who had committed violent crimes. Simply put, states report these names to a federal database that licensed gun dealers then check before selling a weapon. Schumer said that it is clear that more needs

to be done to improve this system. Under current law, guns can be sold over the internet and at gun shows without any background checks at all. Schumer today called for ending the loopholes that allow people to purchase guns without having first passed a background check.

Schumer co-wrote the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which included the original assault weapons ban. The ban expired in 2004.

Schumer joined young people and students in making this demand on the heels of the ‘March for Our Lives’ and said the energy to get this done was felt in big cities, small towns and in the hearts of millions of people.

everal prospective firsttime home buyers have expressed their discouragement over the lack of available affordable housing in Harlem. They are ready to give up on their dream of becoming a homeowner because the process is too stressful. I have oftentimes stated during my workshops that the home buying process is very difficult. The statistical data points out that less than 10% of those wanting to buy a home will be able to successfully complete the process.

However, if you develop and execute a sound plan, follow the steps taught in the home buying seminar, and remain focused throughout the process, you can achieve your dream of becoming a homeowner.

Here are some suggestions

to assist you.

(1) be ready when an opportunity becomes available. You must have your money saved.

You will have an advantage on competing buyers if you already have a pre-approval from your lender. Real estate agents will know you are serious about completing the process.

(2) Maintain a healthy credit score. Aim for having your score over 700. Use your credit wisely. Keep your outstanding balance below 30% of the maximum limits. Remember, lenders want to see 24 months clean credit history with at least three or four active accounts. Some lenders will use non-traditional credit such as rent receipts, utility bills etc.

(3) Expand your search. If you are not finding available affordable properties within the

Harlem community, you may need to consider looking into other boroughs. Continue to focus on properties in Harlem just in case something within your price range becomes available.

(4) Stay in contact with your real estate agent and housing counselor. They can inform you whenever any new housing opportunities are available.

Keep a constant watch on the housing websites, especially Zillow, Street Easy and Trulia.

Stay focused. Maintain a positive attitude throughout the process and you will be successful.

Brewer, Food Bank For New York City celebrate thousands of diapers collected in second annual diaper drive

anhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer and Food Bank For New York City celebrated the delivery of thousands of diapers donated through Brewer’s second annual winter diaper drive.

The diaper drive is a non-traditional addition to the city’s many winter donation drives, but fills a real need. Low-income and homeless working parents with small children often rely on childcare services that require them to supply disposable diapers for their children. By supplying diapers for free at emergency food provider facilities, Food Bank For New York City can help relieve a major burden on these parents and their families.

Women’s History Month Spotlight on New York State Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens

Inez was first elected to office in 1974 as a State Party Committeewoman and she served in that role for 32 years until 2006.

In 2005, Inez ran for the New York City Council to represent the district that she lived in, the 9th District that includes Central Harlem, Morningside Heights and parts of East Harlem and the Upper West Side.

Inez won the election and she worked hard forging relationships with her fellow council members and learning how to get things done to better serve her constituents. She was appointed to leadership positions of majority whip and chair of the Committee on Standards and Ethics. She handily won re-election in 2009 and 2013. During her tenure she brought millions of dollars in services and resources to her community and to economically distressed communities throughout New York City.

Inez became the first African American woman in the history of the New York City Council to be appointed to the higher leadership position of Assistant Deputy Majority Leader and chair of the

Subcommittee on Planning, Dispositions and Concessions. As glad as she was for this leadership position, it saddened her that it took getting to the 21st century for a black woman to achieve this leadership role.

In 2017, Inez was selected to run for Assembly member for the 70th District of the New York State Assembly, which includes the neighborhoods she represented in the city council plus Washington Heights.

She ran unopposed in the primary and won in the general election by a 93% to 7% margin against her Republican opponent. She was sworn in on January 1, 2017 and was appointed chair of the Subcommittee on Micro Business as well as being a member of nine other committees (aging, banks, libraries and education technology, real property taxation, small business, Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian legislative caucus, women’s caucus, Puerto Rican/Hispanic task force and task force on women’s issues).

Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens has spent her life thus far as a highly respected fighter for basic civil and human rights, justice, equity, inclusion and diversity. Inez’s advice to young woman of today looking to make a difference is simple: start with where you live, your building, your block, your neighborhood. ew York State Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens is one of two daughters of Lloyd E. Dickens. Mr. Dickens and his eldest brother, Fred, made a fortune buying and selling real estate in the 1930’s and ‘40’s. For a time, they owned sizable chunks of Harlem commercial and residential properties, along with row houses in Queens and the Bronx.

Her elders were in the vanguard of the struggle to secure equality for blacks and other minorities in the job market, the courts, city government and education. Her Dad was a Democratic district leader in the years of fast-changing party alliances and hostilities and he represented Harlem in Albany from 1959 to 1964 as an assemblyman.

Being politically active came so natural to Inez because she was raised in a community-active family that were strong advocates of putting blacks in control of the businesses in their communities. In the 1970’s, Lloyd E. Dickens helped form the Freedom National Bank on West 125th Street, where he became vice chairman.

Inez began serving her Harlem community as a student activist working with her Dad, years before she ran for political office by becoming active in the local political club, by signing up residents to vote and making sure they got out to vote. More importantly, she listened and learned the needs of her

My Day at the National Museum of African-American History

s I approached the National Museum of African American History & Culture I did so with a sense of exhilaration and a sense of anticipation. The building stands out from all the colonnaded, gray/ white stone buildings and monuments surrounding it. Not like anything around it.

When you enter the Museum you are on the “C” level and you are guided to Heritage Hall where you ride an elevator to level C3 – Slavery and Freedom 1400-1877.

The Galleries beckon to you with sights and sounds of the African slave trade, history of African people, and the domestic slave trade. The Gallery contextualizes the international slave trade and the part it played in the global economic expansion of Europe and the United States. There are images of brutality and there are images of pride.

The enslaved Africans fought their enslavement

with everything in them.

Some chose to survive and some did not.

Level C2 Defending Freedom, Defining Freedom 1877-1968. Here we see the movement toward self-determination – the never-ending quest to define ourselves – here you have stories of degradation, misery, hope, challenge, dreams, opportunities, uplift. Unlike many of the enslaved African voices that were silenced, here you have personal stories of enrichment, stories that resonate with daring and challenge; little children integrating all white schools and being BOMBARDED with hatred; older students walking the gauntlet of white bigotry and hatred; images of mobs attacking, dogs attacking, hoses let loose. On Level C2 there is a gallery dedicated to the martyrdom of Emmet Till (it is the only place in the Museum where photography is not allowed).

Level C1 A Changing America 1968 and Beyond. Highlights of this

level include the Black Power Movement; the Black Panthers (I heard more than one parent/ teacher explaining to a little one that no, this is not Wakanda). Political activism; possibilities imagined and realized. The airing of discriminatory practices and policies.

Here the Dream Deferred (Lorraine Hansberry) is the dream being realized.

As you move through the exhibits you have a sense of urgency – not to rush or hurry, but to grab hold of this history and cherish it -there is a rhythm to the movement. A steady beat of knowledge to ingest.

I have studied African and African-American history for many years and even with my limited knowledge, the information presented on Levels C1, C2 and C3 can shred your emotions. In print, video and sound we can see that the survival of African-Americans in the United States is a testament to our resilience

and strength. Coming to the U.S.A. as chattel and debased by years of displacement and denial of our humanity, we continue our upward journey to gain our rightful place not just in this country, but all over the world.

Before I left the Museum for the day, I spent a few minutes in Waterfall. A quiet, contemplative space that refreshes and soothes after the onslaught of information in the C Level Galleries.

There are various quotes but the one that resonated with me was by Sam Cooke: A Change is Gonna Come.

End of Day 1 Level 4: The Culture Galleries Yes, Chuck Berry’s Red Cadillac smacks you right in the face. Get in, turn the key and we are ready to roll. If you are older than 60 – it brings back memories; if you are a youngster, you can only imagine. . ..

The space directly behind the Cadillac is shaped like an old-fash-

ioned LP with two projection screens outlining the playing surface. (I did figure this out before I looked at the map.) On the outside of the playing surface are specific performance entities and categories. There is a juxtaposition of action, i.e., videos and soundtracks alongside of presentations of clothing (a dress worn

by Celia Cruz in performance); instruments and bits of data. Curtis Mayfield showcased next to Nat King Cole, and, and, and ………….

It is an exquisite banquet of the arts, Broadway, Sacred Music and Opera are covered; it is a testimony to the essential madness of the African American world that helped us to keep sane in an insane world – it was the art of balancing our lives through music, dance, song.

Level 3: The Community Galleries – making a way out of no way Highlights of the struggles in sports; there are life sized figures of John Carlos and Tommy Smith. Muhammad Ali is prominently featured.

Basketball, the Olympics, Baseball, Football, we are there.

The struggle of African Americans in the military was fraught with many expressing the thoughts that why serve for a country that still in many ways treats you as chattel (on the ramp from C1 to C2 is a Red Tail, one of the aircraft flown by the Tuskegee Airmen).

These postures are amply presented not only in the Community Galleries but

on the C Level Galleries also.

Other exhibits and information presented in the Community Galleries include snapshots of successful business-people who fought the odds and made a success for them and their families. Here you will also see how African American Communities were not only centers of thriving businesses and cultural institutions, these Communities influenced the wider world surrounding them. Sometimes it created hostility and engendered violence (Rosewood and Tulsa); other times it fostered copycat styles and cultural flavoring such as the cross-cultural development that is today called Salsa.

Level 2: Explore More!

Search your family’s roots; explore a sunken slave ship; take a virtual step lesson; learn about the green book; research your culture, history, or community. This is a level to learn and to explore to expand your knowledge. By the time I got here, I was spent so I only looked at things I did not partake of much.

This was my inaugural trip to the National Museum of African American History & Culture. I plan to do it again and again.

I urge you to go. Getting tickets is not easy, but don’t give up. Take your children, your grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. No matter what they do or do not know about the history of African-Americans, the journey will be an unforgettable experience.

BLACK WOMEN NEED BETTER ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE

I

productive decisions can quite literally be a matter of life and death.

Data from the CDC show Black women are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth than White women. These statistics remain consistent even when adjusting for factors like age, education, and economic status.

There is a growing consensus that the stress of prejudice and racism endured by Black women increases the likelihood of preterm birth and other health consequences.

Racial and ethnic disparities in unintended pregnancy also persist. Black women are significantly more likely to have an unintended pregnancy when compared to all women of reproductive age, and the percentage of people who decide to end an unintended pregnancy, instead of give birth, is highest among Black women.

Black women at risk of unintended pregnancy are also less likely to use any method of con-

prior to prescribing the pill for healthy patients. People are already empowered to provide self-care with over-the-counter medications, and there is no reason a birth control pill should be different.

Studies show that individuals themselves can determine whether birth control pills are right for them and if there are any health conditions that might make taking birth control pills less safe or less effective.

While having a yearly genecology exam is important for other health reasons, it is not necessary to start birth control pills.

Yet, I’m not concerned about my patients disappearing. In a recent survey, the vast majority of women interested in taking an over-the-counter birth control pill reported they would continue to visit their healthcare provider to obtain gynecological screenings, like pap smears. We don’t have to hold patients hostage to their prescriptions for birth control pills in order to get them into the office for other services. We need to work to make all reproductive healthcare more accessible for people where and when they need it.

Of course, over-thecounter birth control pills won’t singlehandedly fix the legacy left by discriminatory healthcare programs and the reproductive coercion experienced

by Black women, but it can bring us closer to a future where every person has the resources they need to make decisions about their own bodies and lives with dignity.

’ve been a practicing OB/GYN for nearly 15 years, long enough to see patient after patient struggle through the web of systemic barriers that make accessing healthcare needlessly difficult. At my practice in Baltimore, in a state that is a national trailblazer in providing comprehensive and affordable reproductive healthcare, I still hear every day from women who struggle to get the care they need.

My patients have told me stories about having to take three buses to get to an appointment, only to be turned away, if they are late. Some patients don’t have the right type of insurance coverage or have no insurance, pushing needed health services or medication financially out of reach. Others can’t take time off work or afford transportation or childcare in order to go to their doctor.

Reproductive healthcare is not a luxury, and for Black women specifically, being in full control of our re-

traception, particularly young Black women.

Researchers propose these disparities are a consequence of implicit and explicit racism when interacting with the medical system, lack of quality information about effective family planning methods, and inability to access or afford reproductive healthcare.

What I see in these statistics — and what I hear from my patients — is that the current systems for providing birth control are not meeting Black women’s needs. We need to think bigger about how to overcome these barriers and provide convenient contraceptive options directly in people’s communities.

From birth control delivery apps, to pharmacist prescribing programs, healthcare innovators are bringing us closer to a world where the tools to prevent pregnancy are at your fingertips.

In my view, an overthe-counter birth control pill is the obvious next step and would be a game changer for giving people the option of getting safe birth control when and where they want it.

Women’s health providers are working in tandem with researchers to hone best practices for providing birth control pills—for example, no longer are blood pressure checks or pap smears required

2. Find practical applications. Science, art and math are an integral part of everyday life.

Use the weather report as an opportunity to discuss meteorology. Bake with your daughter and work on figuring out measurements for doubling recipes. On the road? Have your daughter calculate the distance from your current location to your destination, as well as the amount of gasoline you’ll need to get there.

rom time to time I like to remind you to stop and smell the roses. There are many opportunities to do so, but we tend to try and accomplish too many tasks, obligations and responsibilities within the limited number of hours we have each day.

For the sake of this week’s article, I am going to call those aforementioned tasks

etc . . . “noise.” The “noise” is a constant din that forces itself into our consciousness and pushes us to keep up with the “Status-flow.”

It is because the world can sometimes be a very noisy place that I thought it would be interesting to consider the beauty of silence.

In addition to the pressure that is imposed upon us to keep things moving, think for a moment about all the other “noise” each of us contributes to the environment: cell phones, loud conversations, boom boxes, laughter, the click of our heels on the pavement and even something completely natural like a sneeze! It all adds up to overload!

Now thinking about silence or anything resembling quiet can be a bit un-

nerving when you live in a city like New York. I recall a trip to London, another hubbub of activity; but it is a very different city. Although the streets are bustling with activity, the noise was missing! There weren’t any loud boom boxes, or rowdy young folks being well . . . young. People almost whispered their conversations to one another . . . there weren’t even any crying babies. Everyone seemed to be so . . . quiet! It caught me by surprise.

But the silence made me notice other things, like the rustling of a newspaper or a gentle sigh, or the wind ruffling the trees, the sound of a gurgling fountain, the hiss of the hydraulic lift on a bus, the click of a camera, chirping birds

Can Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. Really Change the Face of NASCAR?

iger Woods changed the face of golf. Venus and Serena Williams TRANSFORMED tennis. And now Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. MAY DO THE SAME FOR NASCAR. The 24-year-old race car driver’s Cup Series debut at the iconic Daytona 500 got the nation’s attention. As NASCAR’s first full-time black driver in its elite series since Wendell Scott in 1971, all eyes were on Wallace. Thanks to his second-place finish, the highest-ever by both a black driver and a rookie, those eyes didn’t waver. As Wallace traveled to Hampton, Ga. to race the Folds

Wallace, who was born in

By 16, he was competing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, the sport’s main developmental series for grooming its next generation, as part of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity initiative. His first race at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, he won, becoming the youngest driver to ever win at the THAT track. After another win, he finished third overall in the series and received the Rookie of the Year award, a first for an African-American driver.

He won three more times in 2011. Driving for Joe Gibbs

Racing TEAM in 2012, he held his own, staying near the top and even winning one race. He had five wins in two years. In 2014, he finished third overall while driving the truck series with Kyle Busch Motorsports.

He followed that up by driving with Roush Fenway Racing in the Xfinity Series from 2015 to 2017. When Aric Almirola

was injured last year, Wallace filled in by driving for the iconic Richard Petty Motorsports. His stellar performance prompted a welcome as their full-time driver of the legendary no. 43, now a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, for the 2018 season.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty, nicknamed “The King” for a career that includes seven NASCAR Championship and Daytona 500 wins each, plus over 700 Top 10 finishes in 1,184 starts, strongly believes Wallace is a future NASCAR star.

Bill Lester, the historic black NASCAR driver who raced two Cup-level races in 2006 and garnered seven top10 finishes in the truck series from 2000 to 2007, champions Wallace but warns that the lack of major sponsorship is a huge obstacle to WALLACE realizing his full potential.

“We’re lacking in that department when it comes to NASCAR,” Wallace said in conversation regarding the potential impact he and his team

“For us to be able to go out and do what we do on the racetrack and try to be the best, I think
