Church of Scientology in Harlem Hosts Launch Party for Scientology TV Network

n Monday, March 12, 2018, the Church of Scientology in Harlem hosted the launch party for the Scientology TV Network from 6 pm to 10 pm. The television network will run 24 hours, 7 days a week on Direct TV channel 320. The official launch time for the network was 8 pm so the first two hours we ate, drank non-alcoholic beverages and listened and danced to popular, clean secular music played by DJ Thrill, who was dressed like the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. The church has two several storied buildings on 125th Street between 3rd and 2nd Avenues; the church and community center are located on both sides of the New York Public Library located on the block. For decades,

I understand that sometimes unexpected circumstances will occur that can throw you off course momentarily. However, you must maintain focus throughout the entire home buying process.

Here are a few suggestions to help.

(1) Start with determining a projected purchase date. Use this date as target date when you expect to become ‘mortgage ready’ to buy your home.

You will need to have money saved, an acceptable credit score and be ready to apply for a pre-approval. This date will help you maintain focus

throughout the home buying process. It will help you push pass those times when you feel like quitting. You must remember that you are on a mission. Let nothing impede your home buying progress.

(2) Use your monthly household budget to anticipate how much you can save each month in determining a date. You want to aggressively save as much money as possible for your home. The more you can save, the sooner you will be ready to buy.

“I love it,” said Keisha Latty, owner of KSL Group LLC, which performs quality control work for real estate developers. “Just the fact that women entrepreneurs have the opportunity to get together in a place like this and be supported. I think it’s fantastic and a great opportunity.”

Another attendee, Wanda Diaz, said she started her company, Weirdos Krew LLC, as a way to teach entrepreneurship to her daughter and other young women after the girl told her she was being bullied at school.

“I started Weirdos Krew to stop bullying,” the mom said. “I

recruited six girls from church, along with my daughter. I’m teaching her about self-care, not to worry and not to worry about the bullies, because it can really destroy you.”

George Hulse, vice-president of community engagement at HealthFirst, called the attendees “outstanding and talented” and said HealthFirst was honored to be part of a

program that empowered, supported and advocated for female entrepreneurship.

hen it comes to Harlem’s continued success as a business hub, the future is female. That’s according to the hundreds of women who attended the annual Uptown Women In Business event March 15 at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem.

The women entrepreneurs showcased all types of businesses: there were milliners, authors, restauranteurs, astrologers, owner of an animal hospital- and even a massage parlor owner turned actress and comedian at the 12th annual event.

“When a woman grows her business, the community grows,” event vendor Princess Jenkins told the crowd.

Many of Harlem’s female business owners attended the day-long event, where they took a photo, networked, promoted their brands and business and commiserated with one another about their experiences as entrepreneurs.

The event was hosted by Pat Stevenson, the founder and publisher of the Harlem News, and her partner for this event HealthFirst.

And the event seemed to go over well with the attendees.

The event kicked off with a continental breakfast, and each of the business owners stood up and introduced themselves and their businesses. A photographer was on hand to snap headshots of each of the entrepreneurs, and after a catered lunch, the women gathered together for a group photo. At the conclusion of the program, each of the attendees received gift bags from partner HealthFirst.

A representative from Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer office also made remarks and offered the borough president’s help with cutting through red tape.

“I’m really very moved and intrigued by the different types of businesses there are, especially in our community,” Julie Butler, who owns the 145th Street Animal Hospital, said.

“It’s definitely very inspiring.”

The main focus of the annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (HHWW) Celebration is to bring awareness to the many natural and holistic options that can address health and the improvement of the quality of life. Due to the many questions surrounding health care, a number of people of all ages are looking for natural ways to maintain health and wellness. The Theme of this year’s wellness week is “Discovering

Natural Wellness Options”.

HHWW always begins on the last Saturday in April to coincide with World Tai Chi Day an international wellness movement where thousands of people in cities throughout the world start practicing breathing and energy movement exercises at the same time in relationship to the time zone in each country. During the wellness exercises and programs on that day the meditative focus is on a universal awareness of wellness and world peace.

Whitney Moore Young, Jr. – The World Community of Social Workers

In addition to her role as a professional social worker, lecturer, and organizer, from 1995-2005, Banks was an Instructor and Academic Advisor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She also is the founder and owner of Banks Enterprise, an event planning, life coaching, and community development organization devoted to “improved human behavior through personal healing, cultural awareness and spiritual consciousness”.

Whitney M. Young was a prominent Black social worker instrumental in the formation of the Association of Black Social Workers (ABSW). He was a past president of the National Association of Social Workers and a member of the “big six” leadership of the civil rights movement. Young received his Bachelor of

Science degree from Kentucky State College in Frankfort, Kentucky, studied engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his master’s degree in social work from the University of Minnesota.

Additionally, he worked for the St. Paul Urban League, served as the executive secretary of the Omaha Urban League and as instructor at the Nebraska School of Social Work at Creighton University in Omaha. He was the dean of social work at Atlanta University and later became executive director of the National Urban League in New York City.

In the 1960s, Young called for a 10-point domestic Marshall Plan for all the nation’s black citizens. He broadened the plan of the Urban League to include all blacks who needed help and to take advantage of any legal or activist victories to improve housing, employment and education. He lectured on civil rights and

wrote two books, To be Equal and Beyond Racism.

Every year on that exact date, Velma Banks, in concert with WCSW members Tom Adams, Anna Austin, Kimball Cox, Flora Miller, Ph.D., Sydney Moshette, Jr., Johnny Parham, Esq, Laura Pires-Hester, Ph.D., Atkins Kin Preston, Rudene Scipio and the Honorable Betty J. Williams, host a community panel to commemorate Young’s good work.

Velma Banks believes that raising awareness of the teachings and contributions of Whitney M. Young Jr. will help the field of social work become more sensitive to the unique needs and challenges of the black community. Her efforts came to fruition in 1992 when she organized the group committed to promoting his legacy.

Innovative Disney Dreamers Academy impacts lives forever by Derrel Johnson

she prefers to be called, wants to educate people about epilepsy, a condition she has. “I just want people to be completely aware of what epilepsy is in general and have a complete understanding that we are normal people, we just have something going on in our brain that you may not and we are the same as you,” she said.

Asked how DDA will help her immediately, she said “It’s definitely going to help me because I’m going to feel more in touch with myself because, like Mr. Sprinkles said, don’t look at your mistakes as mistakes, but how they shaped you into the person you are now,” Kat said.

We also spoke to 2012 DDA alum Imani McClendon, who works in New York City at Bloomberg Analytics, about how the program changed her life. “It

was life-changing,” she said. “I gained mentors, I gained people who I knew would support me, I gained further insight on what it is that I wanted to do and what it is that I did not want to do.”

Harlem News asked Steve Harvey what moments stood out to him for the first 10 years of DDA at the opening day parade at Magic Kingdom. “I got this one little boy, his company works for me, he started here as a Dreamer when he was 15 years old,” Harvey said. “He’s a millionaire today. He’s 21-years old and he’s a millionaire. I have him talking to other kids. I’ve watched the program change people’s lives.

Kids that had no parents at all, parents were murdered, that went to college and graduated. I got boys that started in the program gangbanging. They’re engineers now.”

Harlem News spoke to Tracy Powell of Disney about how continuing to innovate is ingrained in the DNA of Disney. “(We) make sure that we take any experience, it could be in our parks, it could be in our resorts, it could be in our offices, how do we re-imagine what that event is, that experience is, so that it can be new and fresh as the years go along so it doesn’t feel like it’s the 11th year,” Powell said.

I don’t recall ever seeing a black pilot before, but the 15year old Smith is dreaming of being one. His parents support that dream and Disney Dreamers Academy gives those in the program the tools to succeed at whatever they aspire to be.

As I peer into the future, I see myself getting on a plane and seeing a young black pilot.

he 11th Annual Disney Dreamers Academy (DDA) with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine took place in Lake Buena Vista, Florida from March 8 - March 11 with 100 talented teens from 25 different states, DDA alumni, and star-studded guests. Television host Steve Harvey, recording artist Ne-Yo, actors Jussie Smollett, Mikes Brown, and Marsai Martin, gospel music great Yolanda Adams, and more participated in the three-day academy that changed the lives of 100 high school students.

Harlem News spoke exclusively with some of the Dreamers about how the program changed their lives and some of their aspirations for the future. Harlem News spoke to some of the New York-area Disney Dreamers Alum to learn how they found out about the program, what they thought of the experience and most importantly, to hear all about their dreams.

Sean Smith is a 15-year old freshman from Basking Ridge, New Jersey, who hopes to obtain his private pilots license before graduating from high school. We asked Smith how he first learned of DDA. “My mom would always listen to the Steve Harvey Morning Show and throughout the years she would tell me about (DDA) but this was my first year I could apply for it,” he said.

After DDA was over, we asked Smith how the program changed him. “It really changes your prospective on everything.

On life, on what you want to do, and how you’re going to help people, not just pursuing your interests but finding yourself,” the wise freshman said.

Kathryn Stevens, a senior from Hornell, New York, learned of DDA from her mom and told us how she learned she was one of the outstanding 100. “I literally screamed,” she said, after digging out the mail from under snowfall during a storm. Kat, as
