HOUSE PASSES CONGRESSMAN ADRIANO ESPAILLAT BILL TO RENAME DISTRICT POST OFFICE HONORING TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

ongressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in support of his bill, H.R. 4406, which designates the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 99 Macombs Place in New York, New York as the Tuskegee Airmen Post Office Building.

“The Tuskegee Airmen are known for breaking racial barriers in the military as the first all African-American pilot crew of the U.S. Army Air Corps

(AAC), the predecessor of the U.S. Air Force,” said Rep. Espaillat. “Trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, the Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 15,000 individual raids throughout Europe and North Africa during World War II. Their courage continued following their service as they returned home to lead the fight against racism and discrimination during Jim Crow in the South.

“I am proud to recognize the Tuskegee Air-

men for their bravery, service to our country in the face of racism, and sacrifice and commitment to the U.S. armed forces by introducing this bill to rename the U.S. post office located at 99 Macombs Place in their honor. A symbolic gesture and tribute to the memory of each of the airmen who served, as no gesture compares to their contributions to this country,” he concluded.

The Tuskegee Airmen was a popular name given to the first all-black squadron, activated into service by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 during the peak of World War II. Among them, was a 26-year-old man of Dominican heritage, Second Lieutenant Esteban Hotesse. Mr.

He served as a pilot for the 619 squadron of the 447-bombardment group and served for three years with the Tuskegee Airmen before being killed during a military exercise in

1945. Due largely to the efforts and at the request of Rep. Espaillat, Mr. Hotesse will posthumously be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his service as a Tuskegee Airman. Further details and formal recognition will be announced later this spring.

To My Brilliant Black Daughters, Nobody Can Take Away Your History

o my beautiful, brilliant Black daughters - I have so many hopes and dreams for you, that if I tried to say them all, they would run longer than the entire Harry Potter series!

My hopes for you, my two beautiful Black girls, are so simple and yet also entirely grandiose. My dreams for you, beautiful Black girls, are that you are free to be whoever you want to be.

If you only get one lesson from me, your mother, let it be this: Your history didn’t start with slavery, and White people’s history didn’t start in the United States of America.

As your Black parents, your father and I are teaching you our viewpoint.

Our Black culture begins with the beginning of humans.

In fact, the first humans lived in Africa. The first civilizations were in Africa.

Our Christianity began in Africa. Africa is our homeland and everything about Africa should bring you pride. Wear your African-ness, your Blackness with pride!

Your history, the history of the continent of civilization in Africa, starts in modern day Sudan, around 6,000 B.C. In fact, the first “empire” of two great nations happened between modern-day Egypt and modern-day Sudan. We will be sure you know those modern names

are European names. We will teach you their deep-rooted African names: KMT and Meroe.

We are teaching you the history of Ancient Kemet, Meroe and Nubia.

You will learn of the African civilizations, the use of iron and tools in Africa, the resource riches of the African continent and the complicated, fascinating history of over 10,000 years of human civilization.

Africa had kings and queens and warriors, slaves, artists, scientists, mathematicians, farmers, sailors, inventors and musicians. You come from a beautifully talented Black culture.

As your mother, I have told you repeatedly that you are already free to be whoever you want to be. But as you approach adolescence and spend more time in schools than you do with your parents, you may begin to doubt that I told you the truth.

See, the books that you will read and the lessons you learn, will not validate your potential exactly as you are; beautiful, brilliant Black girls, from a legacy of beautiful, brilliant Black women.

In formal school education, you will be exposed to a different viewpoint. Most school curricula in the United States are completely uninterested in young, brilliant Black girls like you learning about your culture, discovering multiple viewpoints or forming your own opinions.

In school, you will likely be inundated with stories of Europe: Ancient Greece, Roman Empire, the Medieval Period, Dark Ages, Industrial Revolution and the British Empire. Then you will be told all about the greatness of the United States of America that comes from the

rich history of Europe.

You will be forced to memorize, learn and admire the brilliance and beauty of Europe and White people.

This is something I cannot protect you from. You must learn their history.

But remember, more than facts are at stake. In those classrooms, you are seeing only their viewpoint. You can take a broader perspective.

The United States of America was founded in 1776. On July 4, 2018, the U.S. will be 243 years old. Europeans landed in the Americas in 1492 and have been interacting with indigenous land of the First Americans, for almost 550 years.

Understand this, my beautiful, brilliant Black daughters: your history is over 10,000 years old. The enslavement of Black people by White people, is at best, only 550 years of your history.

That is a mere 5.5 percent of your totality. Sure, the enslavement of Black people by White people, and our subsequent struggles to become totally free, are important to know and learn. But they are a very, very small part of who you really are and who you, and we, as Black people, can be.

What makes you, and other beautiful, brilliant, Black children different from many White children is you know that their history isn’t just fact-it is a viewpoint. And, that you, as a Black American, as a Black African, have completely different interpretations of history, of heroes, of scholars and who is “important.”

As your parent, I wish you were free, my beautiful, brilliant Black children to speak openly, honestly and with-

out fear about who you are and your Black history. But it is not always safe for you to do that.

Talking about Ancient Egypt being African can get you in trouble. Having a name that “sounds Black” can lose you a job. In fact, much of life will be devoted to protecting yourself from White people’s false views about who Black people are and what they have and can do.

But I promise you, with all that I am, I will tell you the truth. Just as my mother told me the truth. Your ancestors who came to the Americas 500 years ago not only survived attempted physical and cultural genocide, they kept our Black African story, culture and beauty alive.

Remember 550 years is nothing compared to over 10,000 years. Our last 550 years is not our whole story.

As your parent, I swear on the lives of all our ancestors over our 10,000-year history, I will never let you forget how beautiful and brilliant you are, my Black daughters. Nor will I let you forget our beautiful, brilliant Black culture.

You are part of a beautiful, brilliant, Black people that has a history and presence throughout the world. 500 years?

Ha! You are in but a minute of your 10,000-year story. Our Black is brilliant, beautiful and most importantly, resilient.

Be Prepared to Buy Now

any prospective first-time buyers are under the impression that by attending the Home Buyer Education Workshop, you will automatically qualify for the Home First Down Payment Assistance program offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

You must meet all the eligibility requirements to qualify for this grant program.

This grant assistance program can provide a first-time home buyer with 6% of the purchase price up to $25,000 that can be used for either down payment or closing costs. The eligibility requirements are: (1) be a first-time home buyer; (2) buy in New York City; (3) complete the home buy-

ing workshop; (4) meet the household size and income guidelines (go to the www.nyc.gov/hpd) for the guidelines; (5) use an authorized lender; and (6) the purchase price cannot exceed the maximum limits.

The problem is most low to moderate income buyers’ income exceeds the qualifying limit for this program. They then get discouraged and decide to discontinue the home buying process. They stop because they have not saved enough money to complete the process. Not being eligible for the grant should not stop you from becoming a homeowner. You cannot allow anything to stop you from achieving your goal of homeownership.

There are obstacles all along

the path of becoming a home buyer. You must push beyond these barriers. Set aside the excuses for not buying. Not being eligible for the grant means you will have to put in more effort.

Save more money. Reduce your spending. Delay your projected purchase date by a few months.

Success Academy Students win Big at NY State Chess Championship

T

Approximately 9,000 SA students — the majority of whom are students of color and from low-income families — receive chess instruction starting in kindergarten. In third grade, select scholars join teams that play in 100 internal and external tournaments each year and receive extensive coaching in afterschool and summer programs.

The network often recruits players who, because of lack of confidence or exposure at home, might not otherwise volunteer for the team. They also work hard to encourage female players, bringing top-rated girls to the girls-only championships in Chicago each year.

Like so many of Success Academy’s chess players, Baalla probably wouldn’t have played competitive chess if she hadn’t been recruited to the team in third grade. his past weekend, Nura Baalla, a Success Academy sixth-grader who is half Puerto Rican and half Moroccan, took home the ninth-place trophy in the state’s elementary championship. Baalla’s win broke gender barriers in a boy-dominated sport: she was the only girl to place among the top ten in this competitive division.

Baalla is currently ranked fourth nationally among girls under age 11 and is the product of four years of training in the Success Academy program.

The program has a record of developing top chess players from groups that tend to be underrepresented in the sport, including girls, Hispanics, and African-Americans.

“Early exposure, excellent instruction, and a proactive recruitment strategy are key to getting students from all backgrounds passionate about the sport,” says Sean O’Hanlon, director of the Success chess program.

This year, they walked away with an impressive number of wins, including: Six top-three division wins, including four firstplace trophies in high school intermediate and reserve, K-5 intermediate, and elementary intermediate divisions.

York Chapter of The Links, Incorporated (GNY) recently hosted an afternoon of learning and engagement as part of a national initiative to advance and promote STEM Education among minority youth. Presented by the GNY Links International Trends and National Trends Facets, STEM-ulate NY: Future Thinkers was aptly held at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering at Brooklyn’s Metro Tech Center. Nearly 20 students were in attendance, each receiving the benefit of one-on-one exchange and cross-disciplinary insights from NYU School of Engineering students, who volunteered their time to work with the elementary school students on various aspects of the STEM curriculum.

Among the participating students were 14 children from Harlem’s Promise Academy II charter school.

STEM education is a curriculum based on the concept that students greatly benefit from an interdisciplinary and applied approach to understanding and becoming proficient in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“The Greater New York Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is committed to the no12 tion that all children

exposure to academically stimulating and challenging curricula that will help them achieve future academic and career success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” says Rhonda Joy McLean, president of GNY Links. “My Links Sisters of the National Trends and International Trends Facets have fully embraced the developing and presenting of programs such as these.

We also believe in the power and importance of arts education and added a complementary arts element transforming the event into a STEAM event.”

The full day of activities began with the screening of an original video, “What is Engineering” by HeirO-Links Kyla Jones and Kendal Askins, with instruction by Ms. Askins about the construction, functions, and differences between serial and parallel circuits. The instruction was followed by the students having hands-on opportunities to build circuits, design and create artwork, problem-solve, and build the optimal circuits to light the artwork. Each girl received a copy of the book, “What Color Is My World?: The Lost History of African-American Inventors”, courtesy of Link Anita Farrington.

Students Participated in Prestigious Disney Dreamers Academy at Walt Disney World Resort

S

omething’s wrong.

It may look just fine, but you know better. Call it intuition, call it plain-as-day, but there’s something off, something not-quite-right about a situation and it’s gotten under your skin. You can’t ignore it and you can’t let it be. As in the new novel, “Down the River Unto the Sea” by Walter Mosley, it’s time to set things right.

The last thing Joe King Oliver needed was that letter.

Joe was already skittish and uneasy in his own skin, and he certainly didn’t trust very readily. That’s what happens when you’re wrongly accused of a crime but you spend 90 days in Riker’s anyway, in solitary confinement, listening to other men scream, waiting to be killed.

Yes, though that all happened more than a decade ago, it still

simmered in Joe Oliver’s soul.

But that letter.

It came from a woman who wrote that her name was Beatrice but she was Nathali Malcolm once, long ago, when she was coerced into setting him up. When her lies and accusations sent an innocent man to prison.

Through the years, Joe couldn’t figure out why it happened, let alone who’d done it. He left Riker’s broken, with a lost marriage, a lost NYPD job… just lost. Weeks after his release, his only friend stepped in quietly and helped Joe with a PI business, and that’s where Joe was when he read the letter.

He didn’t want revenge – not completely, anyhow – but he did want his name cleared.

This letter could do that, just as it could stir up a thousand

bad dreams. So when a beautiful woman came to his office with a suitcase full of money and a story of an activist who was railroaded straight to jail for a double-cop-homicide, the time seemed right to fix a few wrongs.

But the more Joe looked at his case and that of the activist, the more he saw similarities he couldn’t ignore. In solving one injustice, could he solve another? And was it safer to trust a real demon than to live with the demons in his life?

Here’s the thing I love best about Walter Mosley novels: the main characters are solid. You feel like you could lean on them all day, and they’d never budge.

That’s Joe King Oliver, and that’s “Down the River Unto the Sea.” And yet, there’s wiggle

room in this book: Mosley doesn’t destroy readers’ fun by telling who done it in this noir whodunit. Instead, we’re allowed the same dawning realization that Mosley’s Joe has, and that just sharpens the gasping you’ll do while reading. Add a swirl of street-darkness, a few soulless characters and some clueless ones, a bit of pure evil, and you’ll be turning pages far, far into the night.

This is one of those books that leaves you a little breathless – not only while you’re reading, but once the back cover’s closed, too. For anyone who loves hard-bitten PI thrillers, reading “Down to the River Unto the Sea” couldn’t be more right.
