Manna’s Soul Food and Salad Bar still serving delicious dishes for more than 30 years in Harlem By Derrel Jazz Johnson

W

hen it comes to buying Soul Food in Harlem, there are many options at many different price points.

But if you are looking for good food at an affordable price from a place that has been serving the Harlem community for generations, there is only one choice: Manna’s Soul Food and Salad Bar. Manna’s, which has four locations in

Harlem (2353 Fredrick Douglass Blvd at 126th Street, 70 West 125th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenue, 486 Lenox Avenue at 134th Street and 54 East 125th Street between Madison and Park Avenue) is a payand-weigh eatery that has been serving the community and those visiting Harlem since 1984. Whether you want fried chicken or fried fish, collard greens or string beans,

macaroni and cheese or sweet potatoes, or healthy salad choices at Manna’s, you can have a little, or a lot, of all. Harlem News sat down and spoke to the owner of Manna’s, Betty Park, over a plate of her delicious food.

Though she opened Manna’s in 1984, owner Betty Park was already working in the food industry when she was given the idea from a Southern man

to open a soul food restaurant in Harlem.

That sparked the idea to open Manna’s. For over 30 years, people continue to come to Manna’s.

We asked Betty why.

“They come here because the food is good, they’re comfortable, and it’s affordable.”

One of the reasons she has been successful is her employees.

Betty sees her relationship with her employees as a partnership, working side-by-side with them. “We are equals,” she says, and it is that mindset that has led to many of her employees being with the company 10+ years.

Another reason for success is consistency. Perhaps their most popular item, fried chicken, is made by one employee who has worked at Manna’s over 15 years, giving it the same recipe for the consistency. Bet-

ty recalled a story of KFC executives coming over to Manna’s.

KFC had three stores on 125th street, now all closed.

In the middle of the interview, Betty had a customer at the Manna’s Plus Menu, which she was personally handling. I watched her interact with her three customers, a woman who looked to be in her 30s, perhaps her teenage son and his grandfather, maybe in his 60s. I overheard Betty discussing the order with them, taking the time and effort to ensure that her customers were happy with their meal. It is this attention to detail that has kept Manna’s open for nearly four decades.

Manna’s is always there for the Harlem community when needed. I attended a holiday event in which Manna’s donated food,

and you may have saw a recent cover story of Harlem News, where Betty herself was on hand at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters to serve Thanksgiving dinner to over 300 people.

When you discover why Betty chose the name Manna’s, it is no surprise why she is so willing to help the Harlem Community. “The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.”

Harlem has a lot of new eateries and as the community continues to be one of the hottest places in the city, that will only continue. We must continue to patronize the stables of our community, especially those that serve a tasty variety of options like Manna’s.

he past few weeks we have been discussing several grant programs now available for prospective low to moderate income first time buyers. Understand, you must still have adequate savings to start the process. But these programs can assist you in make home buying a reality. The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York offers a program called the First Home Club.

This is a savings program that will give you $4 for every $1 you save! You can save a maximum of $1,875 and the program will match it with $7,500 to use for down payment and/or closing costs.

If eligible, you can combine this grant with other grant programs such as the Home

First Grant, the SONYMA down payment assistance loan (DPAL), or closing costs assistance loan (CCAL).

Naturally there are some restrictions to the program you must: (1) meet the household and income guidelines.

(2) Use a participating lender, in New York City there are six banks participating in the program including Valley, Sterling, Quontic, HSBC; M & T and Astoria. (3) Make regular monthly deposits for a minimum of 10 months. If you miss a month you must add that on to the back of the program. (4) Be ready to purchase a home within 24 months of starting the program. This includes the 10 months of savings. (5) Complete the Home Buyer Edu-

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan). The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz. Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santi-

ago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico.

Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works. “The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains. The result is a captivating piece representing daily events and life on the islands through an audiovisual language.Each video carries its own story and speaks to daily life and the traditional myths engrained in Caribbean culture.“Beatriz produces compelling images that provoke new interpretations on the realities of the Caribbean experience,” explains PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.

In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her ap-

proach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities. Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

WHITE GUY ON THE BUS: A PROVOCATIVE AND ‘POLITICALLY INCORRECT’ LOOK AT RACIAL BIAS AND CLASS DIVIDE

resented by the Delaware Theatre Company and running through April 16 at the 59E59 Theaters, this explosive play by Bruce Graham impeccably directed by Bud Martin (the writer and director behind sold-out hits Any Given Monday and The Outgoing Tide) is a piece of theatre you do not want to miss. Although written a couple of years ago it is a timely, thoughts-provoking portrait of America today, interpreted by an excellent cast unravelling their complex relations and moral ambiguity.

The opening scene is set in an affluent neighborhood where Ray (brilliantly interpreted by Robert Cuccioli,) a wealthy, white financial consultant who ‘makes rich people richer’ lives with his outspoken wife Roz (Susan McKey) who ‘by her own choice’ teaches in a public

school in the tough side of Philadelphia where students often call her ‘white bitch’. When their equally liberal white friends Christopher (Jonathan Silver) and Molly (Jessica Bedford) pay them a visit they engage in a condescending debate on race and privilege heavy on cliches and generalizations. At this point you may feel you have been tricked into listening to a moralistic lecture given by privileged whites who cannot recognize their own underlying racism.

But it is only a smart, deliberate move intended to leave you totally unprepared to the bewildering reality that will unfold when in the following scenes enters Shatique (Danielle Lenee). She is a black, young single mother struggling to raise her son in the rough part of town while putting herself through school to become a nurse. Riding week after week, side by side on the same inner-city bus, Ray and Shatique are getting to know each other… or so it seems. Shatique is going

to visit her brother, who is in prison for murder. But why is Ray on that bus? What unravels next is a complex, stunning and shocking reality of rage and revenge, poverty and privilege.

One that I do not want to spoil and you will discover when going to see this masterful play.

This is a powerful portrait of our society, masterfully written and performed with passion and craft. It drags you into the discussion as if you were right there on the stage…and then it stuns you with an unpredictable and unavoidable punch in the face. It should be played on Broadway!

At the end of the show I asked Bud Martin what made him choose this play. “I was drawn towards directing it because it took me out of my comfort zone.

I am a white male and I am privileged. I have never experienced anyone having any power over

me. It is my privilege to bring this bold show to you, and were it not for this play, I probably would not fully understand the power and advantages that my white male privilege gives me. It deals with hard and challenging topics. But it is incumbent on us, as arts organizations, to look at the issues we face in this country and engage in thoughtful and provocative discussions about them…by shining light on prob-

lems in our society such as race, class, poverty, crime, retribution, public education and those among us who are marginalized.

By so doing, we hope to raise awareness and empathy.”

Hundreds Attend 10th Annual Harlem Community News Uptown Women Business Owners Event Sponsored by Healthfirst

omen business owners from across New York City and beyond came together last week for the annual “Uptown Women Business Owners” photo shoot, lunch and networking event. More than 300 people attended the event at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem – which was sponsored by HealthFirst and coordinated by the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Princess Jenkins, owner of the Brownstone..

“I can’t thank you all enough for all the trailblazers and sheroes with us,” George Hulse, vice president of HealthFirst, told the crowd. “On behalff of the 4,000 people HealthFirst employs and the 1.2 million people we insure, and as the vice-president for 16 years, I am honored to work for you and do things in the community.”

The 10th annual event – the brainchild of Harlem News’ publisher Pat Stevenson – brings female

Up next for an award was Lawrence “Ben” Miles, of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce, who said he was honored to advocate for female entrepreneurs in the city, and said there was no chance he’d be slowing down.

“Look for me, I’m not done yet. You can always call me and I’ll help you get things moving with your business.

Following a catered lunch, the attendees spent time networking with one another before the event’s conclusion.

The day brought out both women business owners who were starting out, as well as entrepreneurs

who have become mainstays in their communities: -Rita Fields, a retired NYPD police lieutenant, founded security consultant firm McKenzie Associates LLA in 2010. The company offers everything from private investigators, armed and unarmed guards, security training, emergency evacuation plans and more.

“Practically everything that the NYPD can do, I can do,” Fields said, adding that she was thrilled to attend this year’s event. “Being that security is a traditionally white male dominated industry, it does help you put your foot in the door.

I did break glass ceilings with the police department, so I’m not afraid to do that work.

-Kristin P. Bergfeld of the Upper West Side started her business, “Bergfeld’s Clearance Service,” out of necessity some 30 years ago. She said her husband had walked out on her leaving her to care for two small kids. She started out cleaning houses in the neighborhood, and came across a man with a severe hoarding problem in his home. She helped him get rid of the stuff and stay in his apartment, and now specializes

in helping hoarders get their homes back on track.

“I find it enormously rewarding,” Bergfeld said.

“We’re helping people out…We help get people out of danger, people who are at risk.”

-Harlem-based designer Alexis Flakes founded her jewelry business, “Get Bold Jewels,” earlier this year, and said she was inspired to create her goods by her grandmother, who passed down a stash of vintage

jewelry to her. The collection is priced from $30 to $40, and Flakes said she named her business after he grandmother’s favorite saying to her, “Get bold, girl!”

“These designs are inspired by the things she gave to us,” Flakes said.

“I want to share that confidence and love.”

-Concerned about the number of harmful chemicals in hair care products aimed at women of color, Harlem entrepreneur Ruth Brooks launched her own hair salon, the Madison Avenue Hair Studio,that specializes in organic and natural-based hair care products. She opened her salon in the Kalahari building on West 116th Street, and later moved the business a year and a half ago to Madison Avenue between East 125th and East 126th Streets. Brooks said she was inspired to start her own business after suffering serious allergic reactions to chemicals in hair dye. She did some research, and began importing all natural hair care products from abroad.

-Carla A. Jiminez-Perez, founder of the “Ward Financial Group,” is a self-professed “financial doctor” who helps people get their finances in order.

She works with business owners, doctors and other professionals to advise them on how to lower their tax brackets, prepare for

retirement, save money fir their children’s college education, and other financial goals. Jimenez-Perez founded Ward Financial in 2011, and she has offices on Wall Street as well as other locations around the city.

“In the Caribbean and African-American community, we live for the present,” Jiminez-Perez told the Harlem News. “It’s blessing, because I get the chance to change the future for many families and small business owners.”

And for Jiminez-Perez, her passion for her business is personal: “When I was 13, I lost my father without life insurance, and I saw the impact that it had. I know the impact because I experienced it. I’m very proud of making the commitment to educate.”

How to Match Your Current Savings to Your Ultimate Retirement Needs

I

n a nation that debates nearly everything, this topic creates almost no disagreement.

Americans aren’t saving anywhere near enough for retirement, setting the stage for a potentially dreary time ahead for many when they reach the closing act of their lives.

In fact, a study by the Economic Policy Institute found that almost half of American families have no retirement-account savings at all.

While the widespread-savings shortfall is a given, a consensus is trickier to find when it comes to advice on just how much of your week-

ly salary you need to stash away if you want your retirement to be secure.

“Opinions vary; you’ll hear some people say 10 percent, you’ll hear others says 15 percent,” says Rick Rivera, a partner at Safeguard Investment Advisory Group (www.safeguardinvestment.com).

“Some people say you need to have saved $1 million by the time you retire, which is a tall order for a lot of people.”

Clearly, something is better than nothing, but following some general rule of thumb for saving could lead you astray, Rivera says. Everyone has different circumstances,

goals, and objectives.

“What your neighbor needs and what you need may not be the same thing at all,” he says.

“You need to take a look at your own financial situation and at what a good retirement would look like to you.

Rivera suggests a few things to consider on the way to zeroing in on the right savings amount: • Figure out what it is you plan to do in retirement. Do you want to travel or spend a lot of time golfing? Is there a hobby you enjoy? Maybe you want to spend time as a volunteer. “Once you have an idea what it

is you want to do,” Rivera says, “you’ll want to consider the expenses related to those activities.”

That means creating a budget and determining the amount of monthly income you’ll need to do the things you want to do.

• Review your potential income sources. Will you receive Social Security?

Is there a monthly pension check in your future?

Although it’s becoming much less common, some people have great pensions, so they don’t need to save as much. Most people, though, don’t fall into that category, so they need to focus more on saving to cover the shortfall.

• Do the math. If, for example, your pension and Social Security add up to $4,000 a month, but you’ve determined you’ll need $6,000, then you know you’ll need to make up that $2,000 shortfall from your savings. Based on your age and an estimated rate of return, a calculation can be made to figure out how much you’ll need to save to accomplish your goal.

A young person, obviously, could save a smaller percentage of their income than someone who’s just 10 or 15 years away from retirement.

“Depending on just how close you are to re-

tirement, you may even have some catching up to do,” Rivera says. “This is why I say that following a general rule in a vacuum isn’t the best idea. It may or may not get you where you need to be.”

Five Key Actions for Surviving the Business Storm Cycle

As they try to make sure their businesses survive, Hopson says it’s critical that company leaders keep these key points in mind: • Professionalize the back office and IT. That will keep your systems predictable and your IT ready to expand and adapt to the next phase the business faces. “And I don’t care what business you’re in,” Hopson says. “Information technology is your company’s backbone.”

• Technology alone isn’t the answer, though.

Successful ongoing transformation of a business depends on not just technology, but people and processes as well. Each must be fully integrated with the other two. When you leave out one, Hopson says, your business’s functions are no longer healthy, effective, and productive—and you may not be able to survive the transition points on the business cycle.

He developed an “IT survival quiz” to help business leaders assess how well they’re doing on this score.

• Keep employees informed and engaged. It’s part of a leader’s role to let people know where the company is in the

business cycle, and to educate, encourage, and inspire them to use each phase as productively as possible, from startup, to rapid growth, to deceleration and back again.

• Don’t stand still.

The “business storm cycle” will drive you to constantly reinvent yourself as a company. If you fail to recognize that the status quo won’t last forever, the market will leave you behind.

• Be prepared for a “tornado.” Periods of high growth – which Hopson calls “tornados” – are caused by a new product, a new market, a new merger, or a technology breakthrough. “They know how to make one of these growth phases last as long as possible so they can get all the profits they can out of it.”

Although it can sound like he’s sounding a dire warning, Hopson says with the right planning businesses can survive those “tornados” and thrive.

When you do, take a deep breath and relax, he says – but not for too long.

“Eventually, a new tornado will come along,” Hopson says, “and you will go through the entire cycle all over again.”

But if they’re not careful navigating the storms that the market and fate throw at them, they could cycle right out of existence, says Dave Hopson, managing partner at the information-technology consulting firm Triumphus and author of Surviving the Business Storm Cycle: How to Weather Your Business’s Ups and Downs (www.davehopson.com).

In fact, about half of all new businesses don’t make it to their fifth birthday, according to the Small Business Administration. Essentially, those startups stalled out.

Maybe the reason was too little capital. Maybe it was a faulty marketing plan.

Sometimes the reason may be that the technology crucial to any business’ success simply couldn’t meet the always-evolving challenges the business faced.

“Transitioning from startup to successful enterprise is always going to be a difficult undertaking,” Hopson says. “But that’s going to be even more so if your company hits an exciting growth phase

You Can’t Teach Old Dogs New Tricks

few weeks ago my good friend Alfie Wade, who now lives in the South of France, called me to discuss a book that he feels will change the lives of thousands of people. The name of the book is “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Dr. Norman Doidge.

The Doidge book is a study of scientific success by scientists who are leading the new

neuroplastic revolution movement; a movement with an identical base in concepts of ancient wisdom.

Modern science has long believed that after childhood the brain starts a long process of decline. Brain cells that were damaged or died could not be replaced.

It was also believed in the same scientific circles that people who were born or suffered brain damage would be limited or damaged for life.

If the brain is socially programed, it is wired and cannot change. If the brain cannot change the personality devel-

oped by an unchangeable brain was also fixed and unchangeable as well. Neuroplasticity research has proven these old beliefs about the brain to be untrue.

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, refers to the now proven fact that the brain has the ability to change throughout life. It has the ability to form new connections between brain cells to repair and replace dead or injured cells.

Neuroplastic research has shown that the brain can grow new nerve endings to reconnect neurons (nerve cells) whose

here are many ways we can use herbs to help balance our energies. Bruising or crushing the leaves and flowers to stimulate the release of the volatile oils allows us to use herbs in a variety of applications.

You can spread them on affected body parts wrapped in a cloth. You can either boil the herbs and apply as a warm poultice (wrapped in cloth/gauze), or apply directly to the body and cover with a hot towel, or place a hot water bottle on top of the towel. Herbs for this type of application could be mullein, black cohosh, witch hazel, skullcap – for aches,

sprains and inflammations.

For nursing moms with engorged breasts use parsley – here you can simply make a cup of tea and dunk a washcloth in it and lay it across your breasts.

Once dried, all herbs increase in their therapeutic values, as they are more concentrated and potent than when fresh.

rom time to time I like to remind you to stop and smell the roses. There are many opportunities do so, but we tend to try and accomplish too many tasks, obligations and responsibilities within the limited number of hours we have each day.

For the sake of this week’s article I am going to call those aforementioned

tasks etc . . . “noise.” The “noise” is a constant din that forces itself into our consciousness and pushes us to keep up with the “Status-flow.” It is because the world can sometimes be a very noisy place that I thought it would be interesting to consider the beauty of silence.

In addition to the pressure that is imposed upon us to keep things moving, think for a moment about all the other “noise” each of us contributes to the environment: cell phones, loud conversations, boom boxes, laughter, the click of our heels on the pavement and even something completely natural like a sneeze! It all adds up to overload!

Now thinking about si-

lence or anything resembling quiet can be a bit unnerving when you live in a city like New York.

I recall a trip to London, another hubbub of activity; but it is a very different city. Although the streets are bustling with activity, the noise was missing!

There weren’t any loud boom boxes, or rowdy young folks being well . . . young. People almost whispered their conversations to one another . . . there weren’t even any crying babies. Everyone seemed to be so . . . quiet!

It caught me by surprise.

But the silence made me notice other things, like the rustling of a newspaper or a gentle sigh, or the wind ruffling the trees, the sound of a gurgling fountain, the

hiss of the hydraulic lift on a bus, the click of a camera, chirping birds even.

It seemed that no one was willing to break the silence lest they intrude upon someone else’s experience . . . it was a beautiful thing!

In New York, just riding the subway is like sitting in the middle of an on-going theatrical production; couples talking animatedly to one-another, street performers wandering from car to car, people selling batteries, candy and the like, kids kidding around; there might even be a fight or two! Not in London.

Have you allowed time for silence in your life? Or is your mind too busy trying to think about what you are going to do next? It is time to take control and

be still, to listen to the silence instead of letting the noise clutter and cover up the wonder and delightfulness to be found in quiet.

Move away from “noise” to a place where you can appreciate silence and spend as much time as you can to relish the peacefulness that discovering newness brings to your life. Step away from the “Status-Flow” for a few moments of quiet. If you say that you don’t have time then you are underestimating the value that silence can contribute to improving the quality of your life.

She says she loves you and you really know it. You know because she takes care of you, makes sure you’ve got snacks and toys, teaches you, and keeps you safe. Mama loves you very much, and in the new book “Love Is” by Diane Adams, illustrated by Claire Keane, you’ll see how love works.

“There are a lot of billionaires in Silicon Valley, but in the end, we are all heading to the same place.

If given the choice between making a lot of money and finding a way to make people live longer, what do you choose?” – Bill Marris, prominent entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

I’ve said it before, sometimes the most complicated problems require the simplest solutions. Take Benjamin Franklin’s pivotal cautionary mantra “an ounce

of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Relative to our health care system, this means that one has a lot less to lose physically, emotionally, mentally, financially, by preventing disease rather than by trying to get rid of it once it has already occurred.

Investing in prevention-driven “medicine” in the form of cost effective, public health programs could revolutionize the entire health care system. It will provide a viable prescription for unsustainable increases in rates of chronic diseases aimed at preventing disease before it occurs.

According to the World Health Organization’s European regional health policy framework document The Case for Investing in

Public Health, “prevention can give returns on investment within one to two years”.

Examples include programs that address the variety of determinants of health (housing, employment, mental health, environmental, transportation concerns), which individuals have limited control along with programs that address behavioral health concerns over which individuals have more control (namely nutrition, physical activity, substance abuse, violence prevention, suicide). In other words, we must invest in programs that provide an upstream approach to help control the flow of disease that is drowning so many downstream.
