The program featured an exclusive weekend of dreaming big, discovering possibilities and preparing for the future. Along with a parent or guardian, each teen received an allexpense-paid trip to Walt Disney World Resort, where they learned important networking skills,

participated in hands-on career workshops and created fun memories to cherish for a lifetime. Students were also motivated and inspired by presentations from noted professionals and celebrities, including: NFL superstar Cam Newton, legendary singer Patti LaBelle and Journalist and T.V. personality T.J. Burlington Stores Donates $80K for New Library at Thurgood Marshall Academy

tudents from Harlem’s Thurgood Marshall Academy for Leadership and Social Change will have a new place to learn after a local business ponied up $80,000 for a state of the art library.

The school partnered with Burlington Stores Inc. and DonorsChoose.org to build the new library that features state of the art technology. Burlington Stores, which opened a new Harlem location in the fall of 2016, donated the $80,000 renovation and redesign cost of the library.

“Thanks to Burlington and DonorsChoose.org for the investment in Harlem and our whole community,” Superintendent Gail Reeves said. “We appreciate that

you’re not only a business but also a part of the community that invests in the education of our children.”

School and store officials unveiled the new learning center at a ceremony March 2 – National Read Across America Day - at the school on West 135th Street. The space is officially named the “Dr. Calvin O. Butts III School Media Center.”

Dr. Butts thanked the school’s teachers, students and parents for their work at the school and thanked Burlington Stores for its generosity and its work in the community.

Preparing Global Citizens: Expanding Multilingual Classrooms in New York City

ike many New Yorkers, I am a child of immigrants. Being a City of immigrants is what makes us strong and resilient, and as New Yorkers, we take pride in living in a diverse, multicultural place. That same pride extends to our schools.

First and foremost, we know that in the 21st century, speaking more than one language opens doors and opportunities for our City’s students.

That’s why, as Chancellor, I am dedicated to increasing Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual Education programs across the City, which provide instruction for students to acquire fluency in two languages while fostering an appreciation for multiple cultures. In other words, to be thoughtful and productive citizens of our country – and our world.

This year, I am particularly proud that we are opening 68 new Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual Education programs across all five boroughs in September 2017. This large expansion includes our first Urdu Transitional Bilingual Education program in Brooklyn, in addition to programs in Chinese, Russian, Arabic, French, Bengali, and Spanish.

Bilingual programs are critical for the 150,000 English Language Learners (ELL)

who attend public school in New York City. As a former ELL myself, I know the many benefits that come with being bilingual. This expansion will give hundreds of ELLs access to high-quality bilingual programs, preparing them for real world experiences and success in the classroom and beyond.

Bilingual programs give our students confidence as they develop proficiency in a second language and can also help students to develop a vision for their futures. One of our remarkable students, Carlos Vega, attends Manhattan Bridges High School. Carlos was born in Mexico and arrived in New York with his parents six years ago. Moving to New York City exposed him to different languages, cultures and needs of people, in particular he noticed many handicapped New Yorkers struggling to get on the train, climb stairs and overall navigate the City independently. Carlos is

a Pre-Engineering and Dual Language student and hopes to one day create prosthetics and sensory aids to help people without limbs to become more independent. This is the beauty of our City and our bilingual programs, which increase opportunities for thousands of students like Carlos every day.

Parents are partners in expanding bilingual programs.

Family engagement helps us open bilingual programs in neighborhoods that need them, and I am pleased to hear from parents at town hall meetings requesting these programs in their schools. We want to hear from our communities about the Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual Education programs that they need.

And doing a better job of reaching parents – who represent the diversity and many cultures of New York City – is also on our mind. As Chancellor, providing families with limited English skills access to information, workshops and confer-

ences in their native language has been one of my biggest priorities. Since the fall, for the first time, we’ve offered Native Language Parent Conferences for families in Mandarin, Bengali, Arabic and Spanish. I encourage families to attend these conferences, and also to find other ways to get involved in their child’s education. It could be through a weekend club or English classes—there are many ways for the entire family to support their child’s future.

I look forward to visiting these programs, and seeing the benefits firsthand for our students and families. As we continue to bring more educational opportunities to students across the city, we’re celebrating our diversity, building equity and excellence across our schools, and putting more students on the path to college and meaningful careers.

ome values in Harlem are steadily increasing. The fair market values are making it more difficult for low to moderate income families to purchase any type of property. Interest rates have started increasing.

Many current Harlem residents are now considering moving to another borough or to another state just to be able to purchase an affordable home. This is not necessarily the best option for first time buyers. Most of them want to remain in their beloved Harlem community. But they are being simple priced out of the market as more middle and upper income families are buying into the neighborhood.

Low income buyers must understand they will need a

solid financial strategy to purchase a home in this climate.

That plan starts with creating a monthly household budget. You have to exercise strong discipline to live within your means.

The budget will help you answer three key questions related to the home buying process: How much can you save each month towards the purchase of a home? How soon you will be ready to buy? Finally, how much can you afford to spend on the purchase of a home?

These are difficult questions.

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan). The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz.

Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico.

Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santiago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on obser-

vational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works.

“The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains. The result is a captivating piece representing daily events and life on the islands through an audiovisual language.Each video carries its own story and speaks to daily life and the traditional myths engrained in Caribbean culture.“Beatriz produces compelling images that provoke new interpretations on the realities of the Caribbean experience,” explains PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.

In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her approach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities. Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works

by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

Beatriz Santiago Muñoz: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors is the third exhibition of El Museo’s five-year series highlighting Latina artists.

El Museo del Barrio’s Women Artists Retrospective Series In recognizing the historical exclusion of women from the art professions, which has directly contributed to an international museum culture predisposed to male artists, El Museo del Barrio is resolved to challenge this gender bias, within our means and within our walls, by organizing a retrospective or major survey of works by outstanding women artists—one in each fiscal year.

The surveys will span decades of an artist’s career, occupy the majority of the gallery space in the museum, and be accompanied by public programs and a book publication with new scholarship that positions and conveys the import of the artist’s contributions to the field. by African American Director Barry Jenkins, took the award for Best Picture over favorites such as “La La Land” and “Hidden Figures.” The film is a complex coming of age story of an African American man that follows his journey from boyhood into manhood.

Moonlight’s unexpected win and the bizarre way that the announcement played out on live television, will go down in Academy Awards’ history and will forever be a part of that legacy that spans 89 years.

After actor and presenter Warren Beatty was given the wrong envelope backstage for the final award of the night for Best Picture, he and fellow Best Picture presenter actress Faye Dunaway announced that “La La Land,” had won the coveted award. As La La Land’s pro-

ducers began making their acceptance speeches, representatives from the Oscars rushed on stage to correct the error in real time announcing that “Moonlight” actually won the evening’s biggest honor.

In stunning fashion, “La La Land producer Jordan Horow-

itz held up the card printed with the name of Best Picture award winner “Moonlight” for the audience and the TV cameras. Horowitz summoned the film’s director and producers to the stage.

The evening was a triumph for Black Hollywood. While last year’s Oscars were criti-

cized for the lack of diversity among the nominees for the Academy’s top honors, this year’s Oscars ended in several big wins for Black actors and Black films.

Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award with his victory for his role in “Moonlight.” Viola Davis won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film adaption of playwright August Wilson’s play “Fences.” The son of Marian Wright Edelman, Ezra Edelman won an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category for “OJ: Made in America.”

Although “Hidden Figures” was nominated in four categories including Best Picture, the film didn’t win a single award.

Another moment to remember was a victory for actor

Casey Affleck for Best Actor in “Manchester by the Sea,” over Denzel Washington, who starred in “Fences.”

Washington has a Best Actor Oscar and Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Training Day” in 2002 and “Glory” in 1990, respectively. If comments on social media are a guide, many feel Washington was robbed of an Oscar in 1993 after he did not win for his role in Spike Lee’s film “Malcolm X,” as well as not being awarded for his role as Troy in “Fences.”

Duke wins ACC Tournament, Villanova claims Big East Conference Crown

or the first time, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament was played in Brooklyn, New York and it did not disappoint. The tournament opened with three games Tuesday and four Wednesday. Then on Thursday, in a lineup that would thrill any college basketball fan, the ACC sent six Top 25 teams into competition in four games, highlighted by the Duke Blue Devils defeating the Louisville Cardinals.

It only got better from there, as Duke faced off against the North Carolina Tarheels, a team they lost to six days earlier. But the Blue Devils would erase a

halftime deficit to defeat UNC and advance to the finals against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

In a back-and-forth game, the Blue Devils were able to defeat Notre

Dame 75-69. It was the 20th ACC Tournament championship and first since 2011. Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski talked about winning the conference tournament.

Looking forward, did we see the 2017 NCAA in New York City last week? I spoke with NCAA Tournament analyst Reggie Miller last week, and he had some thoughts on last year’s NCAA Champion Villanova when I asked him how to search for a tournament winner this year. “Look for great guard play but more importantly look for upperclassmen guard play.

To me, that was one of the single biggest reasons I thought Villanova was so successful last year and why they won is because

they had three really great guards that could control tempo, one being a freshman (Jalen Brunson) but the other two were a senior (Ryan Arcidiacono) and a junior (Josh Hart) that could control the tempo.”

With Hart now a senior and Brunson a sophomore, the Wildcats have that great guard play again. Look for them in an Elite Eight matchup in the NCAA tournament, which will see both teams returning to the New York City area at Madison Square Garden. UNC, who Villanova defeated in last year’s final, looks poised for another Final Four run.

Unexpected Strategies for Fighting Allergies

heezing and sneezing definitely isn’t the most invigorating way of getting through the day.

A Simple Spring Cleaning Checklist

t’s the time of year to roll up your sleeves and do some spring cleaning. Experts point out that it’s helpful to streamline the tools you use to do the job and the tasks you seek to accomplish.

“An all-purpose cleaner and a tough degreasing agent can be used in so many areas of the home,” says Jeff Devlin, a licensed contractor who’s appeared on several home improvement television shows.

Devlin’s first tip: look to reduce the number of products in your cleaning arsenal. “Along with high-quality sprays and cloths, I use one all-purpose cleaner that also contains degreasing ingredients.”

• Stove and range hoods: While you should be cleaning these areas regularly after food preparation, take this opportunity to conduct a more thorough cleaning. Spray cleaner directly

Place the filter in a sink or dishpan and pour in concentrated cleaner to cover. Allow the filter to soak for 30 minutes. Drain the dishpan and rinse thoroughly with hot water.

• Floors: Give your floors a mopping. Mix 4 ounces of cleaning solution with 1 gallon of warm water. Apply with mop or sponge.

• Garbage cans and diaper pails: Bags often leak nastiness into the bottom

of the garbage can, which can easily be missed when quickly replacing the bag.

Turn your cleanser’s nozzle to spray and generously cover the can. Wipe or brush any areas that have any residue. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

• Showers, tubs and tile: Use your cleaning agent at full strength and generously spray surfaces directly. Allow it to penetrate the soap scum for up to two minutes.

Do not allow to dry. Wipe away with a coarse sponge or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

• Toilets: Let’s face it.

This isn’t anyone’s favorite job but it has to be done.

Turn that nozzle to spray and generously spray the outside of the toilet. Wipe clean with a paper towel, then give a quick rinse.

• Patio: For patios, outdoor furniture, concrete, vinyl fences and siding, use the same cleaner outdoors: simply spray, then wipe clean with a cloth or sponge and rinse surfaces with clean water. While you’re at it, consider removing grease and grime from tools, engine parts, tires, sports gear and lawn equipment.

Perhaps that’s why women feel less assured about how well they will fare in retirement than men. Just 55 percent of women are confident their retirement will be comfortable compared to 68 percent of men, according to an annual survey by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.

Bajalia says three things can cause women to plunge even further into financial difficulties after they reach retirement.

• Longevity. People live longer these days and women on average outlive men. That’s the good news. It’s also the bad news, Bajalia says, because many women are unprepared financially for a retirement that could

stretch into two, three or even four decades. “Even if a woman has substantial savings, if you want to hold onto your wealth you need to hold onto your health,” she says.

“So you need to build into your retirement planning the cost of health care, and not just routine and preventive care, but long-term care.

And the cost of longterm care is skyrocketing.”

• Widowhood. Because women live longer than men, the odds are that most married women will reach a day when they become widows.

Beyond the emotional turmoil that can create, there’s also financial turmoil. If both are drawing Social Security, one of those checks is going away. If the husband had a pension, that check could also disappear or be reduced. Often, the husband handled the fi-

nances. The wife might not even have known about all the investments or where documents are stored. That’s why it’s important for a couple to take the time to review their assets together so that both have a good understanding of what’s there and what’s needed for a secure retirement.

• Divorce. Just like widowhood, divorce can cause a sudden drop in financial stability for older women. “When you’re in your 30s or early 40s, you have time to overcome some of the difficulties a divorce creates, but when you’re older that becomes more challenging,” Bajalia says. “I encourage women in this situation to get a ‘financial physical’ before a divorce is finalized to ensure they are protected with the strategies they need, and that those are included in the divorce decree.”

A New Life Cycle

M

arch 20th is the beginning of spring a new cycle of life.

Spring marks the start of the first of the four season cycles, a time of birth, cleansing and starting new ways to grow and development.

All living things follow this energy cycle of celebrating new life.

Humans are not always aware that they are following the changing

energy cycles of the universe. Yet the concepts of spring breaks, spring cleaning and time springing forward are commonly known as the introduction to this new season.

As humans we move in four life cycles. Childhood is our spring life cycle, summer is our youth life cycle, fall is our Adult life cycle and winter is our senior life cycle.

Many believe that the human life cycle never ends. Science tells us that energy never dies it only changes form.

The term Transformation refers to the scientific law that energy

cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form. We also now know that everything in our world is made of energy.

The term Transmigration suggests that the soul or spirit returns in a different form to begin a new life cycle in the material world. Many Buddhists believe in reincarnation, which is a form of transmigration where there can be some awareness of a past life cycle. We all have experienced a moment of déjà vu, that sensation of having experienced a current experience in the

past. Some would say that déjà vu is a subconscious memory of an old life cycle.

It makes no difference what human life cycle you find yourself in. The new seasonal life cycle of spring always seems to be welcomed. The longer the old life cycle of winter takes to make room for the new life cycle of spring, the greater the appreciation of that new life cycle. I know that after the past few days I am looking forward to the true feeling of spring.

AN DO TIP Week #49: Press Reset to Revive your Health – Part 2 Last week I talked about the need to hit the “reset button” as it concerns matters of our health. What about hitting the reset button on our perception of our healthcare system in America?

I teach at a school where we have a system of “steps” designed to manage student behavior in the classroom. Get to step 4 and you’ll receive a dean referral. There are also numerous ways stu-

dents can be rewarded.

One afternoon, I decided to experiment with a new rewards system for a particularly challenging class, and instead of writing steps on the board, I wrote “Stars!” This was simply a list of students that conducted themselves like the stars they are. Something interesting happened. The students became more focused on becoming a star than avoiding a step. The results: less dean referrals, more participation, better classroom behavior overall.

Now consider our current healthcare system: One underlying focus is that the young and healthy pay the minimum into a system that helps to care for the sick, poor and el-

derly. This is meant to stabilize the system through everyone’s participation, lowering costs and expanding choice. The designers of Obamacare determined that if everyone “paid their fair share”, the ability to access and obtain affordable healthcare for all would be a reality.

The point is, might the Affordable Care Act have worked better if more young people (21-34 age range that could afford to pay) had incentives to join the market through rewards not punishments?

Rather, instead of penalties (i.e. mandates) for not contributing, focus on rewards for entry into the health marketplace with incentives such as tax free health savings accounts
