GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!OK Social Distancing went out the window this past weekend as protestors across the country gathered in crowds of thousands in response to justice for George Floyd and other Black Lives lost recently and caught on video.

I attended the peaceful gathering in front of the Harlem State Office Building on Saturday.

That gathering of hundreds became a march of thousands on 125th Street. As seen across the country and various parts of the world this was a diverse crowd chanting “No Justice, No Peace.” I was compelled to write about this current state of events. The Good News here is that this incident didn’t just get swept under the rug. They were caught on tape, people were mobalized to protest and now the world is waiting to see if they get the punishment they deserve and if the laws will be changed and those laws in place be upheld so this does not happen again. PONDER THIS! How LOW Will They Go?

enseless killings of African Americans abound wrapped in new coverings to justify how they can be overlooked or undermined. Too often, those under the blue banner have used their power and might to take Black lives with no reservation or hesitation. We are undeniably privy through handheld devices to what can be termed as a devastating downfall in trust of the law and those who claim to be its followers.

Supposed upright citizens have often criticized and ridiculed those declaring “Black Lives Matter.”

All lives matter, but when the roll call points to one group of similar hues carrying the fullness of the most inhumane treatment, it

becomes more than a thing that makes you wonder. We know a person of color will get a spot in a cemetery or a cot in a prison cell; before they get a day in court.

Most of us worry about losing what little we have managed to attain after years of hard work, earned pensions, social security, and healthcare coverage.

nonsensical awe. The laws of the nation are ignored and stalled as the process to take the highest seat in the land moves along with fullblown blatant ignorance revealed for the world to see.

Along with who we will vote for, we now have concerns about how to get the vote in. Who will suffer standing on lines at polling stations despite COVID-19 warnings or the safety net of the absentee ballot drop in by mail? If you are thinking it is a bumpy ride now, imagine another four years, if the people do not make a solid determination to vote under any means necessary.

America is divided in need, indeed. Since COVID-19 has shut in the people, and shut down parts of every state, dismantling

daily businesses, we have unlimited time available to stay abreast of current news and activities in and out of our city.

With reverence for the sanctity of safety, respect for human life and an attitude of gratitude for survivorship, there must be order and it must come to fruition through each of us. There is no time to waste in thoughtless procrastination. Gather up your resources, set aside what you will surely need down the road and stay focused on how to safely protect you and yours right now. We cannot allow anyone to put their shackles of bondage on our aspirations toward a future that is our right as citizens.

Do not allow your mind to be filled with needless smut for amusement’s sake.

When the doors reopen and they surely will, we must be ready to grab whole of every

opportunity. Physically and psychologically, we are being challenged and some will not make it. What happens next is a decision to be made individually to enhance every possibility to survive economically, collectively.

We must be in it to win it and make no mistake, the race has already begun in the new normal on the new horizon that is just a breath away.

Think deep and long on what it will take to move from today and onto a productive and prosperous future.

Doctors Livestream Discuss Impact of COVID-19 on Black America — #NNPACoronavirusTaskForce

ope, misinformation, fear, sickness, and death — the impact of COVID-19 on Black communities took center stage during an unprecedented National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) livestream event broadcast to Facebook and YouTube, Thursday, May 28.

Five highly touted doctors discussed the effects the novel coronavirus has had on African Americans and the post-recovery long-term health and psychological impact the disease has had on many of its victims.

The event was part of the NNPA’s Coronavirus Taskforce and Resource Center where doctors Leigh-Ann Webb, MD and Ebony Jade Hilton are members.

“We’re all colleagues [at the University of Virginia (UVA)] and we are all friends and first-generation physicians, which means we are first in our families to be doctors — and some of us are first in our families with a college degree,” Dr. Webb stated.

Dr. Webb, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Virginia, moderated

the distinguished panel which featured Hilton, an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the University of Virginia and co-founder of GoodStock Consulting, LLC. The panel also included: Dr. Cameron Webb, hospitalist and assistant professor of medicine and director of health policy and equity at UVA; Dr. Taison Bell, an assistant professor of medicine in the divisions of infectious diseases and international health and pulmonary and critical care medicine, UVA; and Dr. Rochanda Mitchell, a second-year Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellow and the current recipient of the Peyton T. Taylor Scholarship.

“My role is mainly in the intensive care unit. I’m seeing mostly the critically ill,” Dr. Bell stated. “COVID-19 is still a really serious problem. There’s been a little bit of a change in the narrative, but people are still getting really ill.”

“A real game-changer will be a vaccine,” added Dr. Bell. “The thought is that we might have something by the fall or winter, but realistically it’ll be later than that.”

Dr. Hilton, who has long championed for the collection and reporting of racial data on the virus’ impact, said it’s important to underscore the effects COVID-19 has had on the African American community.

“When we had 50 deaths, maybe 100, I started to tweet, and I said you know where this is going to go?” Dr. Hilton reflected. “We don’t need data to say that Black and brown people die at a higher rate, but when you add a pandemic, we know what it’s going to look like.”

“For every 2,000 Black people who were alive in January, one has died,” Dr. Hilton observed. “We often talk about mortality rates, but 102,000 Americans are now gone, and that’s an underestimate of what we know to be true.”

band of Dr. Leigh-Ann Webb, said COVID-19 has proven an old adage: “When America gets a cold, Black people get the flu.”

“Racism is the underlying reason that we’re seeing disparities,” he noted, listing economic instability and food insecurity as major reasons why African Americans are more susceptible to the virus.

“Racism shapes our communities, and our communities shape our health outcomes,” said Dr. Cameron Webb.

Dr. Mitchell noted, research is ongoing to determine the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women. “We are looking at preterm labor and some second-trimester losses,” said Dr. Mitchell.

“I hope the NNPA’s Coronavirus Task Force uses this platform to help elevate health literacy because that’s very important.”

Now comes the hard part: moving. But don’t let misconceptions complicate the process. To keep frustrations to a minimum and make your move more manageable, here are five common moving myths, debunked.

Myth 1: All moves are disorganized. Truth: Contrary to popular opinion, relocating can be structured. Begin purging items that aren’t moving with you several weeks before you start packing. Once you’re ready to box up your belongings, pack by room and label, label, label. Numbering containers, color-coding boxes with masking tape and listing contents will help you keep track of

your possessions.

Myth 2: You have to move everything at once.

Harlem EatUp! Pivots to Support World Central Kitchen in Helping Local Harlem Restaurants Get Back to Work and Fight Food Insecurity

arlem EatUp (HEU), now in its 6th year of promoting and supporting local Harlem restaurants and vendors, is refocusing its 2020 festival to support World Central Kitchen’s Restaurants for the People effort to keep local, independent restaurants open and working so they can provide nourishing meals for people in need in their communities. Thanks to generous donations from longtime festival supporters such as L+M Development Partners and Barilla, as well as friends of the festival such as Bank of America, WCK will help Harlem restaurants get back to work and serve those in need during the pandemic. To date, HEU has already helped solicit over $1.5 million in donations to WCK for this effort.

Additionally, their founding festival sponsor Citi is also supporting World Central Kitchen in Harlem as part of a national partnership with WCK of up to $2.5 million.

Restaurants directly employ over 15.6 million people across the country and contribute $1 trillion to the economy, and are a major employer in Harlem. Losing restaurants impacts jobs not only in these establishments, but also the farmers, packers, fisherman, delivery people and more — all who depend on the continued revenue of restaurants to stay in business and 8

maintain fragile supply lines.

By harnessing the power of the culinary sector in Harlem to help improve food security in the community, WCK helps local restaurants who have had to shutter or have experienced alarming decreases in business get back to work. Due to these efforts, they will be able to re-hire, scale up and help build back the community one small business at a time. Just a couple of days after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, thousands came out having watched the horrendous act on the cell phone video taken by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier. White American protesters outnumbered Black Americans in states across the nation, demanding the arrest of Derek Chauvin, the main culprit and three other police officers who participated.

Those people who are in constant denial about the blatant acts of racism

on people of color, most often Black men are the victims, wondered how could the white officer continue to hold steady his knee on the neck of a handcuffed unresisting human being crying out in desperation until his last breath subsided.

Black people watched and were wounded deeply, but not surprised, knowing it was another case of disregard of a Black life. We remember the anguish call “I can’t breathe” uttered in the same fatal words of Eric Garner from an illegal choke hold at the hands of a New York

the police in my neighborhood in Harlem – I had to be there. I felt it my duty to be counted in the numbers. As I approached the Harlem State Office Building the first thing I saw were hundreds of people surrounding the statue of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. - So appropriate since Adam was a crusader for civil rights. The diversity of the crowd was inspiring. The crowd quickly swelled to thousands who marched down 125th Street.

We have all witnessed the protestors all across America and the world. 2020 will be

remembered as the year we had a major civil rights movement in the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This revolution is not only being televised but it is “live” and being recorded and posted in real time by ordinary citizens. So what will happen with all this 2020 Vision Clarity about Racism in this country? Hopefully with our votes, all the voices shouting and marching, and video tapes rolling perhaps the laws and rules will change and evolve into a new normal for America - “Liberty and Justice For All.” 13

We can and must continue to record and expose. We can do what the young lady did when she saw several police officers with guns drawn on a young unarmed Black man. She tried to keep the young man calm, telling him to keep his hands in the air as she continued to ask the police officers why they had their guns drawn on this young man. She pleaded with them to just take him into custody while she was filming. Eventually they put away their weapons and peacefully arrested the young man.

White and Black people need to be vigilant when they witness these racists acts. No matter how tired we are, we cannot turn away, we must continue to speak up and speak out. We must continue to fight for civil rights and economic equality. We must use our vote to put those in office who will fight for our rights.

I have not been able to sleep for the past few evenings. These racists acts brought back memories of incidents in my own life. My home is Savannah Georgia. I am 67 years old. In my youth I remember seeing the “White Only” signs on water fountains, bathrooms, movie theaters. I went to protests with my family and learned songs like “We Shall Overcome.”

he idea of a “new normal” comes from the lifestyle changes we all have been subjected to because of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

There is an old Taoist saying that “There is a Yin and Yang in everything,” which is true. Especially when it comes to the changes we have made since social distancing which has temporarily stopped large groups

from coming together.

Many people are redefining virtual reality because many business, education, entertainment, religious, social, and medical interactions are now online. Virtual platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Suites have become part of this “new normal” and will continue after COVID-19.

Things will never return to the normal we used to know. Whatever that might have been.

The annual 420 cannabis conference was virtual this

year and thanks to Silicon Harlem, it was viewed live by 5,000 people. The event can still be viewed through the Code 420 Event Facebook page.

The annual seven-day Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (H2W) celebration, which also takes place in April, had to be virtual.

The Next annual Harlem event is the Father’s Day Skyscraper Harlem Cycling Classic which will be held virtually on June 17th, June

21st, and June 22nd. The traditional Father’s Day race will be a tribute ride in honor of Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor.

Taylor, born on the 26th of November in 1878, was a champion cyclist and the first African American to achieve the level of cycling world champion in 1896.

He was also the second black athlete to win a world championship in any sport.

He followed the Canadian boxer, George Dixon, who became a world champion in 1892. Taylor died on June 21st of 1932.

In the Black cycling community, Major Taylor has always been held in the highest esteem. This year, Black Cyclists, among others from around the world, will ride in the 47th annu-

al virtual Harlem Father’s Day tribute ride using a Zwift platform at 12 noon on June 21st. Thanks to Unitysports, founded by Richard Cox, and David Lipscomb, founder of CIS Training Systems.

Zwift is a virtual platform that allows cyclists to ride in virtual locations using a stationary trainer, a device that allows riders to train and compete in their homes. Most professional cyclists prefer to use stationary trainers over stationary bicycles because the device provides a more realistic-feeling ride. It also requires better technique and allows for training when the weather outside is not suitable for riding.

The first event during the 2020 virtual Father’s

Day Harlem cycling classic is on June 17th. It will be a promotional ride featuring Nelson Vails, the first African American cyclist to win an Olympic medal. During the 1984 Olympics, he won a silver medal. Any cyclist who has a stationary trainer and a Zwift account will be able to register and ride in this event.

The Third 2020 Harlem Skyscraper cycling classic event will be held on June 22nd at 8pm. Here, professional, and amateur cyclists will test their skills riding in the annual Harlem cycling classic. David Walker, a NYPD community affairs Detective in Harlem’s 28th Precinct, started the event in 1973.

ou find yourself spinning, spinning, spinning.

When you lose someone, that’s how it feels: like you’re spinning in place, you can’t think or understand, and there’s a time limit, as if you’re in one of those game show Cash Machines and you can’t catch a thing.

You can barely fathom that, as in the new book “Black Widow” by Leslie Gray Streeter, it will get better.

They were not childhood sweethearts.

They were, however, in the same graduating class: Scott Zervitz, the tall, white, Jewish dude that knew every-

body; and Leslie Streeter, a quiet Black nerd who spent part of middle-school overseas. She sat behind him in one class, and that was their only connection – although she remembered that he was cute, and he told his friends that he really liked her.

Twenty-some years later, they reconnected over a class reunion. He happened to be living a half-hour away from her Palm Beach condo and, well, one thing led to another. She resisted, though, clearly stating that she was a celibate-until-marriage kind of girl.

That didn’t faze him.

He was a keeper.

They married, their families embraced their

differences, he was looking forward to a new job, and they were in the process of adopting a baby boy. And then, in the middle of “making out” one night, Scott abruptly died.

Remarkably, Streeter held herself together in the following days, but barely, and with an oceans’ worth of tears.

Of those hours, she says, “timelines keep slipping” and there are things she doesn’t remember and can’t tell. But someone suggested once that while making new memories with Scott is no longer possible, talking about him would let him “live on in those stories with... new people.”

And so, she shares...

She writes of his

love for the Baltimore Ravens, his passion for sports memorabilia, his solidness, and his easy self-assuredness.

He was a fan of 1970s TV. He was calm. He was “smart, and that was super-hot.” He was romantic. He was generous.

He was loved.

LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS AT HOME. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19?

• The most common symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include feeling achy, loss of taste or smell, headache, and diarrhea.

• Most people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have mild or moderate symptoms and can get better on their own.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK FOR SERIOUS ILLNESS? • People age 50 or older (people age 65 or older are at the highest risk) • People who have other health conditions, such as: Lung disease Kidney disease Asthma Liver disease Heart disease Cancer Obesity A weakened immune system Diabetes

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I GET SICK WITH COVID-19 SYMPTOMS? If you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms, assume you have it. When you are sick: • If you have trouble breathing, pain or pressure in your chest, are confused or cannot stay awake, or have bluish lips or face, call 911 immediately.

• Call your doctor if you are age 50 or older or have a health condition that puts you at increased risk, or if you do not feel better after three days.

Wash your hands often with soap for 20 seconds, especially after you cough or sneeze.

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands.

Frequently clean surfaces you touch, such as doorknobs, light switches, faucets, phones, keys and remote controls.

Wash towels, sheets and clothes at the warmest possible setting with your usual detergent, and dry completely.

Do not share eating utensils with others, and wash them after every use.

WHEN CAN I LEAVE MY HOME AFTER BEING SICK? • If you have been sick, stay home until: You are fever-free for three days without Tylenol or other medication and It has been at least seven days since your symptoms started and Your symptoms have improved • Reminder: New York is on PAUSE. This means that even if you have been sick, you should only leave your home for essential work or errands, or to exercise, while staying at least 6 feet from others.
