Cerita and her team are responsible for the development, implementation and execution of national strategies to increase and sustain homeownership among low-to-moderate (LMI) income and minority borrowers and communities.

Those strategies include, but are not limited to, sourcing real estate practitioners and builders

doing business in LMI and minority communities; recruitment and retention of diverse sales staff; partnering with non-profit agencies to provide homeownership counseling; and facilitating activities to increase aware-

Major Leon Wallace Open Karate Tournament in Harlem

n May 26th, martial artists from around the city converged in Harlem for the Major Leon Wallace Open Karate Tournament at the Johnson Community Center.

The free event included young and old, novices, experts, demonstrations, point fighting and glimpses of Bruce Leroy’s glow.

Major Leon Wallace (R.I.P.) is recognized as one of the most pivotal figures in Harlem martial arts history.

He used his style of karate to create warriors and good character, helping his students, women, and men, become productive members of society.

Grandmaster Sam McGee, the primary disciple of Master Wallace, who started studying in 1964, is the founder of Harlem Goju. He spoke on Master

Wallace’s legacy saying, “One of his main objectives and purposes was his community.

He did not seek to be famous or to be a legend. His whole objective was the people of the community. And that’s what this event is about, it’s about the people in the community.”

The tournament started with participants organized by age and belt rank, followed by a demonstration of karate

forms, open point sparring, and then transitioning into demonstrations with various weapons. At the end of each event, there was a trophy presentation.

One of the notable points about Master Wallace was that he taught his students without cost. The tournament kept his legacy alive, by not charging admission fees. This economic factor was appreciated by one parent who said “It’s im-

portant because this is a free event. These events usually cost money.”

Although this event was held in Harlem, another significant point of the tournament was the ethnic diversity. Shihan Blake King of the DAS Karate system, located in Chinatown attended the tournament with his students, many of whom are Chinese.

He provided insight on why his warriors made the trip up-

town saying, “The reason why we’re here at this event is to support our children and give them motivation. And also, to let them see other systems. To see why it’s important to train hard and to practice. It’s not just about competing against other practitioners, it’s about competing against yourself.”

‘Finding the master within’ is a consistent theme within traditional martial arts. It continues to play a pivotal role in helping the practitioners in all walks of life. Internationally recognized martial art-

ist, Master Abdul Aziz spoke about how he uses martial arts to help students find their inner master saying, “I teach alignments to my kids. When they’re in alignment they’re in receiving mode. To receive and allow things to come to them. I teach kids to be in alignment with who they are!”

An afternoon of flips, kicks, punches, smiles, and tears proved that Master Wallace’s legacy is alive and well.

The traditional martial arts continue to play a role in conquering the adversities of life.

Black Women Are Changing the Tide of American Politics

ast week, the world witnessed something that had never been done before in the history of politics in the United States.

Not only did Democratic voters in Georgia elect a 44-year-old African American candidate as the first-ever Black gubernatorial nominee in the state, they also made history by electing the first Black woman to be a major party nominee for governor in the United States.

That’s right—former Georgia House Minority Leader and attorney Stacey Abrams soundly defeated her opponent, former State Rep. Stacey Evans, with an overwhelming landslide victory; Abrams won 76.5 percent of the vote compared to Evans’ 23.5 percent. Abrams will face off against the winner of the Republican primary runoff election that will be held in July between Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

While much of the political conversation around the country has been focused on the success of women candidates as a whole, one of the primary reasons for Abrams’ dominant showing in the Democratic primary was the high turnout of Black voters, particularly Black women voters.

The convincing victory by Abrams, a rising star in the Democratic Party, has created a significant amount of chatter in political circles about the growing success Black women candidates are having across the country, particularly in a deeply southern state like Georgia that hasn’t had a Democratic governor since 2003.

“I am a proud daughter of the Deep South,” Abrams stated during her victory speech after winning the Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

“To claim our victory, to write that next chapter and live those best lives, we have a lot of work to do. We have to reach out to those who do not believe their voices matter. Who have been disappointed again and again by promises made and never kept…With your help, we will register every last person we know.”

Abrams continued: “And we’re going to search out those we don’t know yet and prove they matter to us, too…In the Book of Esther, there’s a verse that reminds us that we were born for such a time as this. And now is a time to defend our values and protect the vulnerable — to stand in the gap and to lead the way…that is what we will continue to do—all the way to victory in November.”

A victory by Abrams in November would truly be a game changer relative to politics, as we know it, in the Deep South and across the country.

Then, if you take a look at the rest of the Deep South, which consists of states like Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana, each of those states currently has a Republican governor at the helm, with the exception of Louisiana, where former Democratic state legislator John Bel Edwards was sworn in as governor in 2016.

Abrams has a chance to change the overall landscape of politics as we know it, but it will take more than having her name on the ballot as the Democratic nominee in Georgia to make that a reality—it will require engaging existing Black voters

and focusing on getting newly registered Black voters to the polls in November.

Abrams has adopted a strategy focused on registering new Black voters and engaging more Blacks to come out to the polls and vote in November 2018 than came out in 2014, when only 40 percent of African Americans went to the polls in Georgia, compared to roughly 48 percent of Whites.

Abrams will need that increase in Black voter turnout to add her name to the list of Black women, who are changing the landscape of politics across the country.

According to a recent report by the Higher Heights Leadership Fund and the Center for American Women and Politics titled “The Chisholm Effect: Black Women in American Politics 2018,” Black women only make up 3.6 percent of the U.S. Congress and less than one percent of statewide elected executive officials.

Only 38 other Black women have served in Congress since Shirley Chisholm’s groundbreaking victory in 1968, when she became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress.

Relative to statewide elected executive offices, only three (3) Black women currently serve in a statewide office—Jenean Hampton (R-Ky.), the Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky; Sheila Oliver (D-N.J.), the Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey; and Denise Nappier (D-Conn.), the State Treasurer of Connecticut. Together, these women represent 4.2 percent (3 of 71) of all women statewide elected executive officials and 0.96 percent (3 of 312) of all statewide elected executive officials in the entire country.

Going even further, only 12 Black women have ever held statewide elected executive office in just 11 out of the 50

states, and prior to Abrams’ historic quest to become the next governor of Georgia, no Black woman has ever been elected governor, let alone become the gubernatorial nominee of a major political party.

Abrams may be just the person to change things.

Abrams has become a major catalyst behind this exciting new trend of Black women running for office nationally, and a lot of her momentum should trickle down to other seats on a local level.

The nation will see how powerful this momentum has become since Abrams’ historic victory on next Tuesday, June 5, when London Breed, the current president of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, will face off against seven other challengers in her quest to become the city’s first Black female mayor.

Still, many of these Black women who decide to run for office need the support of the Democratic Party, who historically has a pretty dismal track record of providing support for African American candidates nationwide and at the local level.

Maybe this time will be different.

Time will tell. November to be exact. Stay tuned.

This is a forgivable grant program for first-time homebuyers offered through New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). The program can offer a grant for 6% of the purchase price to eligible first-time home buyers up to $25,000! The grant award can be used for 50% of down payment or 100% of the closing costs.

The eligibility requirements are as follows: you must (1) be a first-time home buyer; (2) purchase a home within the five boroughs of New York City; (3) complete a home buyer education workshop by an approved housing counseling

agency. Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI) is an approved agency; (4) meet the household and income guidelines. You can go to www.nyc.gov/hpd to see the income guidelines.

They will vary depending on the number of people in your household; (5) use an authorized lender. The website will also have a list of authorized lenders for this program; (6) the purchase price of your unit cannot exceed the maximum limits for that type of property, i.e. single family, two family, etc.

If you are eligible for other grant programs they can be combined with HPD’s down payment assistance to maximize the amount of ‘free money’ you can have for closing.

The home buying process is

an extremely expensive proposition. Most low to moderate income buyers find it nearly impossible to purchase property without some financial assistance. The lack of having adequate savings for the down payment and closing costs is an obstacle preventing many from completing this process.

There are still many challenges for prospective buyers, especially with home values in Harlem soaring upward, but now some help is available.

However, you still must aggressively save as much money as possible.

Curry began and ended his speech quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. saying, “Martin Luther King was right: We must discover love. And when we do, we will make a new world.”

rince Harry and Meghan Markle, an American actress with an African American mother, were married on May 19 after exchanging vows at St. George’s Chapel in the Windsor Castle in England about an hour from London.

The ceremony was striking for its racial diversity in a royal family not known for it. The blend of African American and British culture noted by many onlookers resulted in a memorable ceremony with cutting edge aspects and several obvious historical first for the British royal family.

It wasn’t just the entrance of tennis champion Serena Williams wearing Versace or Oprah Winfrey in a pink Stella McCartney dress and hat, it was the music, the style and the words spoken at the ceremony. Gone was the predictable stuffiness that often accompanies royal ceremonies; the wedding’s diversity made the affair even more regal.

The bride’s mother, Doria Ragland, stood nearby, sometimes shedding tears, as the only blood relative on Meghan’s Markle’s side of the family to attend the wedding. Markle’s father, Thomas, was too ill to attend the ceremony after a recent heart ailment.

arlier this Spring over 100 women came out to embark on a journey towards financial freedom. These women or the “FEW” (Financially Empowered Women) dared to attend a financial literacy workshop. Financial literacy refers to having skill sets and knowledge to make financial decisions. By attending this workshop,

They were given worksheets to figure out their monthly household budgets, tablets to check their credit score and to complete an assessment to determine if they were financially healthy and, hand-outs on how credit is evaluated. FEW women welcomed the challenge to change their mindset and behavior about money.

The workshop was held at the House of Justice, the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem, New York.

The highly interactive workshop began with a motivating welcome by NYC Public Advocate Letitia James via video presentation. She encouraged FEW participants to get the most out of the workshop as the information they were about to receive would change their financial destiny and that of their children.

The four topics presented throughout the workshop were: Financial Goal Setting, Budgeting, 10 Financial Health and Un-

After the workshop portion of the day, participants were able to ask more personal questions to the four participating financial services experts (Chase Bank, Carver Bank, Neighborhood Trust Federal Credit Union and Cents Ability) that were also on site.

After the information was shared, the FEW participants were provided a delicious and healthy lunch, were given generous gift bags from the workshop sponsors and participated in a raffle drawing. The raffle prizes ranged from dinner for two at many of Harlem’s established eateries, a denim signature tote bag from The Brownstone, a

gift card to Starbucks and a book called, What the Fico? 12 Steps to Repair Your Credit.

The FEW workshop was created by a team of six professional women tasked with a mission to serve their community in an impactful way. After doing their research, these women decided that financial literacy needed to be the focus. The team’s goal was to address the grim statistics facing African American women in the Harlem community. According to the Center for American Progress, in the American economy, women of color face greater economic segmentation and disadvantage than any other social demographic. For example, the average woman has/earns less money, and therefore needs more savings than her male counterpart.

Though women of color have higher college completion rates than their male counterparts, half of all single Black and Hispanic women have zero or negative wealth.

More strikingly, the median wealth for black and Latina women is $100 and $120 respectively. Furthermore, because to date

there has been no formal institutional infrastructure (e.g. schools, churches community centers) within which financial education is taught, Women of color take less financial risk because of a lack of information and knowledge.

The combination of lack of resources and information and the plight of women living in Harlem propelled the team to select this demographic for the FEW. The largest demographic in Harlem living in poverty is women ages 25-35. The median income is 35,000 of which over 50% of these households are led by single women. Despite these odds, women still control the majority of household

consumer spending.

This data on African American women living in Harlem and the compelling need for financial literacy education for all women of color motivated this professional team to get to work. They committed to ensure workshop participants would be able to set financial goals using the SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely) criteria. By establishing financial goals FEW participants would make smarter money decisions and be more in control of their finances.

April was financial literacy month so the workshop was timely. While the team was able to get the attention of NYC Public

Advocate Letitia James, addressing the financial literacy crisis requires a multi-level (National, State, local) approach to financial literacy education, public policy focused on closing wage gaps between women and men and, providing financial resources for all.

The FEW workshop ended with participants reciting a Declaration of Financial Empowerment pledge out loud. The process of learning how to obtain financial freedom and create wealth is ongoing. Harlem’s growing real estate market for many has been an opportunity to experience wealth creation and the transfer of wealth firsthand. However FEW workshop participants may not be as fortunate.

As gentrification disrupts the Harlem Community and the lives of these women in particular, FEW participants must arm themselves with information regardless of age.

Building wealth is generational. The FEW workshop was the beginning of the conversation. The knowledge received at the FEW workshop must be passed along to the next generation.

ommunity Works, in partnership with The Interchurch Center, Harlem Arts Alliance, Center for Cuban Studies, and NoMAA (Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance) is presenting Spirit of Community 2018: Global Reflections, a free, public art exhibition, from June 11 through Aug.15, 2018 at The Interchurch Center, 475 Riverside Dr. The exhibition honors and celebrates the diverse communities of our city and beyond through contemporary art and photography by established and emerging artists. Each artist explores his and her own personal histories, rituals and cultural identi-

ty revealing the interconnection among us all.

The exhibition includes arts celebrating Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Mexico and beyond.

Artists include Diógenes Ballester, Rodríguez Calero, Edwin Cadiz, Élan Cadiz, Michael Cummings, Rene De Los Santos, Marcos Dimas, Maria Domínguez, Carlos Jesus Martínez Domínguez, Dominque Duroseau, Leslie Jimenez, , Yelaine Rodríguez, and Alicia Smith. It also features Cuban artists Suitberto Goire, Lescay (Alberto Lescay Merencio), Olazabal (Santiago Rodríguez Olazabel), Choco

(Eduardo Roca Salazar), Mederox (José Mederos Sigler) and Leandro Soto.

Harlem Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated launches “Graduation Haircuts for Kids” Initiative

n an effort to support children as they prepare for the end of the school year and graduation, the Alpha Gamma

Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated announces its “Graduation Haircuts for Kids” Initiative,

through which they are providing 150 free haircuts to children in Harlem and the South Bronx.

“This is about

much more than simply providing a haircut,” said Larry Scott Blackmon, President of the Harlem Alphas.

“The goal is to cre-

ate a lasting memory for our kids and their relatives. We want to show the community that there are upstanding men that our children can look up to. The Brothers of the Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter are extremely pleased to provide this gift to the community in the spirit of our Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha.”

Several Harlem institutions partnered with the Harlem Alphas to make this effort work. They include the Baylander IX-514, a WWII boat docked at the 125th Street Pier. The Baylander IX-514, which

is being converted into a new restaurant, was the site for the Harlem Alphas fundraiser where thousands were raised to make this project possible.

ransitional times of the year mean shifting schedules, which can be particularly challenging for children with autism and their families.

Whether you’re just beginning to learn about cognitive special needs, or have many years of experience, gaining insight into what has helped other families cope can be valuable. Discuss Plans Ahead of Time Summer days are often filled with new experiences, which can sometimes be overwhelming for your child. Share a schedule in advance to help

your child understand what the day will look like. Of course, plans -- and weather -- may change, so it’s important to provide a backup plan, too. For example, you may want to say, “We’re going to the pool today at noon, but if it rains, we’ll go to the movies instead.”

Maintain a Schedule Routines are important for all children, but especially for those living with autism. In summer, it can feel tempting to be more flexible with daily routines but maintaining the basic structure of your child’s typical school day helps.

The power of Autosuggestion

A

utosuggestion means making a definite and specific suggestion to yourself according to Joseph Murphy in his popular book, “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind.” The average person is not aware of the powers of the subconscious mind and how thinking can create reality.

All too often negative autosuggestions are the major factors in the lack of productivity, health issues and unhappiness. On the other hand, positive autosuggestions can address fear and doubt and al-

low the seemingly impossible to become possible.

Our conscious mind makes use of the five senses and our life history to develop what we believe to be the truth about ourselves and others. The thoughts that we believe to be true are then sent to our subconscious mind that in turn will turn our thoughts into a reality.

Joseph Murphy explains autosuggestion this way: “What thoughts, beliefs, opinions, or dogmas you write, engrave, or impress on your subconscious mind, you shall experience them as the objective manifestation of circumstances, conditions, and events.”

When the brain receives thoughts from the conscious reasoning mind and those

thoughts are accepted to be true, they are sent to the solar plexus, also known as the brain of your abdomen (your subconscious mind), where they become flesh and made to manifest in your life experience both internal and external.

A major factor in negative Autosuggestion is a term called heterosuggestion. Heterosuggestion means suggestions from another person. From an early age many have received negative heterosuggestions about who they are and what they can achieve in life. We are who we think we are and we can achieve what we be-

lieve we can achieve.

Positive heterosuggestions can develop positive autosuggestions in individuals statements like black is beautiful in the 60’s was an important heterosuggestion that developed self-pride in large numbers of Americans from African descent who for years had been subjected with negative media heterosuggestions due to the racism in this country.

This type of negative heterosuggestion created inferiority complexes that continue to exist in the subconscious minds of many people of color today. The election of President Barack Obama sent a powerful and positive heterosuggestion to many blacks in America and the world, a fact that often goes unnoticed. I believe that this is a reason for

the current racial backlash we are experiencing in government and parts of the public sector.

It is very important to guard against allowing negative direct or indirect heterosuggestions to influence your thinking. If you do, this method of thinking will always develop into negative autosuggested thoughts of fear and doubt.

Remember you are what you think you are, and you can be what you think you can be, use positive autosuggestion to help you achieve your goals, both short and long term. Never allow anyone to use negative heterosuggestions to create fear and doubt that will prevent you from being all that you can be.

ummer means BBQs, beach time and swimsuits, but it could also mean a change in eating habits and not necessarily for the better. Many people work hard throughout the winter in hopes of losing weight before summer, but when summer arrives, they abandon their healthy lifestyle and risk gaining weight.

he joke’s from you!

That’s because you’re a pretty funny kid. You’re always being silly, pranking friends, goofing around, and joking to make people laugh – although sometimes, you have to admit that things get out of hand. In “How to Trick the Tooth Fairy” by Erin Danielle Russell, illustrated by Jennifer Hansen Rolli, they also get out of, um, mouth.

Kaylee was the Princess of Pranking.

“Mischief” was practically her middle name because there wasn’t one single day in a year when she didn’t play a prank. She was known to prank her sister awake. Kaylee even pranked on Christmas. All her friends knew the score and they were careful around her. No

sense in being her next “unsuspecting victim.”

But, believe it or not, Kaylee wasn’t the biggest prankster in the world.

No, that would be The Tooth Fairy.

Seriously, have you ever actually seen The Tooth Fairy?

Yeah, what can you say about pixie dust and swift fairy wings? Not much, except: can you spot trouble here?

Anyhow, one night, right after Kaylee lost a tooth, The Tooth Fairy came to visit. She was expecting to find a small, hard, white object beneath Kaylee’s pillow but we are talking about Kaylee here and instead, The Tooth Fairy got a frog.

When you pillow-prank a professional with a rubber frog, you get dozens of real frogs in

your bedroom in answer.

From there, it was “Game On!” Kaylee pranked The Tooth Fairy with a slice of chocolate pie and hot-sauce topping.

Ugh. The Tooth Fairy retaliated with a roomful of sticky ice cream with whipped cream and cherries that landed absolutely everywhere. What a mess! Of course, Kaylee couldn’t leave things well enough alone so she retaliated and The Tooth Fairy retaliated again and before long, payback was no fun.

Can Black Lightning spark your interest?

didn’t come as a “shock” to me.

The shock is…it’s pretty darn good.

Here’s some comic backstory first (which may or may not jibe with the show.)

Quintin Von Wizel: Black Lightning, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden in 1977, is DC Comics first starring African-American superhero. Jefferson Pierce grew up on the South-Side of Metropolis (AKA “Suicide Slum”), persevered his way through the ghetto and became an Olympic athlete. Years later, he returns to Suicide Slum as a teacher at the local high school. When a gang called The 100 terrorizes the Slum and murders one of Jefferson’s students, he decides to intervene and unleash his inner secret: he’s a metahuman with the ability to generate and manipulate electricity.

His friend, Peter Gambi, suggests Jefferson remain a teacher by day and become a crime-fighter by night to save the community he loves dearly.

The TV show takes place nine years later. Being a vigilante took a toll on Jefferson’s marriage.

Now divorced, Jefferson had given up superheroics to reconcile with his

wife. But when The 100 threatens Jefferson’s family…

LAW: ...Lightning strikes again! Jefferson originally didn’t have a family in the Black Lightning comic. (His two daughters were introduced to his mythos 19 and 26 years after his debut.) But his family is the key to the TV show’s success. Making Jefferson a family man gives him relatable conflicts that dimensionalize him in a way the comic usually failed to. Additionally, it lets the show appeal to different generations.

Older viewers can relate to Jefferson’s challenges, music tastes, slang, dress, etc., while younger viewers can relate to either one of his daughters or their friends.

It takes a lot to get audiences to overlook a garish costume, cliché villains, and occasional groan-inducing lines like “Only Black Lightning can save us now!” Luck-

ily, Black Lightning has enough to compensate.

There’s a great looking and fun cast, a good soundtrack, interesting dilemmas, the addressing of racism, twists, and, due to outstanding producers and writers, a surrounding black community that rings authentic.

QVW: Overall, this show has an amazing storyline. The action is awesome. Its choreography was a little stiff at first, but they worked the kinks out as the season advanced. His movements give me the sense that he rolled with a guy from Gotham once or twice (hint, hint). I like this character because he has abilities strong enough to go toe-to-toe with top tier villains, but he chooses to defend his community, where he feels most needed. I understand he’s a street level type hero, but I would like for him to face some metahuman threats at some point.

Guess we’ll just have to

stay tuned to find out if that will happen. Black Lightning airs at 9pm Tuesdays on the CW. LAW: And season one is available online, on demand, and on Netflix.

L.A. Williams: I love superheroes. And I love black folks. So, as a kid in the 70s, when the Black Lightning comic book series debuted, I could hardly contain myself. A black hero glowing with crackling energy? How cool! It could be even better than Black Panther!!

Turned out….not so much.

Please understand, it pained me NOT to like the Black Lightning comic.

But I didn’t.

The series was quickly cancelled in the ‘70s. A ‘90s revival had terrific art, but not much else, and got canceled again.
