Bradhurst Merchants Association’s Third Annual Awards & Cocktail Reception

he Bradhurst Merchants Association (BMA) held their Third annual awards and cocktail reception at MIST Harlem on Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 6pm to 9pm.

Since 2009, BMA has supported businesses and residents within the Bradhurst business district while leading the effort to attract quality businesses along the 145th Street corridor.

LaChena Clark, President of BMA started off the festivities by announcing that there were four 2017 honorees, three people and one business.

The first honoree had served the Harlem community over a career of 48 years in Congress and was being honored as the 2017 Small Business Champion, the Honorable Charles B. Rangel. As Harlem’s Congressman, Rangel was

instrumental in supporting the creation of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, which began operations on Valentine’s Day in 1995 and made its first rounds of grants and loans in October 1996. Newly elected State Senator Brian Benjamin was on hand to root for the retired congressman. Honorable Charles B. Rangel spoke about how it’s nice to receive recognition while he’s still here for the steps he took to make sure the voice of Harlem residents were heard in Washington,

D.C. The second honoree received the 2017 President’s Award and it went to Nina Saxon, the Northern Manhattan Liaison for NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer. Nina was born and raised in Harlem and she was humbled by the recognition for the work that she categorized as serving her community. She stated that Scott Stringer has mentored her as well as allowed her to grow and serve. Though he arrived late, Comptroller Stringer spoke a few words and

he stated how Nina was instrumental in leading the way for NYC pension funds to divest from the stocks of private prison industry firms.

The third honoree received the 2017 Community Partner Award and it went to City National Bank, which is a blackowned bank with headquarters in Newark, NJ that operates a branch on 125th Street between Morningside and St. Nicholas Avenues. President Clark stated that City National Bank is a blessing that we

need to support since they help us. Everyone should open an account at that Harlem branch to increase the amount of funds they can lend within our community. Willie Blalock III, Director of Business Banking came from its headquarters humbly accepted the award on behalf of the good work his Harlem team does within the community.

The fourth honoree was one of the co-founders of BMA and its current Treasurer, Kenneth M. Morrison of Lemor

Realty Corporation. His realty company plays an integral role in affordable housing projects in West Harlem from developing the property to managing them once they are open. For a building that is about to open his firm received 60,000 applications for 64 affordable rental units. Many members of his family are involved in the business and they and other employees came out to honor him. A fabulous night was had by all.

rooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. released “Fixing the Pipeline: Solutions to Disparities in Gifted Education in New York City,” a new report outlining multiple recommendations for the future of gifted and talented education at all levels in New York City’s public schools.

The report, which can be viewed online at brooklyn-usa.org, is the work of the borough presidents’ Gifted & Talented Education Task Force, was released on the steps of the Tweed Courthouse in Lower Manhattan, home of the New York City Department of Education (DOE). Borough Presidents Adams and Diaz discussed their recommendations to both expand gifted and talented education in New York City public schools at all levels, as well as bring fairness to the admissions process for the city’s specialized high schools.

Access to gifted and talented programs and specialized high schools can no longer be allowed to be dictated by one’s zip code; parents who live in Belmont and Brownsville should expect the same grade-A

programming and enrichment as parents in Tribeca. We don’t need small changes — we need bold changes.”

“Today, we are giving the DOE a little ‘summer reading’ of their own, a report outlining what we believe are necessary changes the City could make today to bring more equity to programs for gifted learners in the five boroughs,” said Borough President Diaz. “We cannot send our children to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech

if they are not prepared.

And we cannot expect them to be prepared if they do not have the same advantages that are offered to other communities.”

Recommendations in the 22-page report included requiring that all communities have equal access to gifted and talented programs in kindergarten; that all students in public pre-K programs be tested for gifted and talented programs; that every student who qualifies for a gifted and talented program be given a seat in their community; that citywide K-8 and middle school gifted and talented classes be expanded across the city; that the DOE provide free busing across boroughs at the elementary level to provide better access to gifted and talented programs; that all students have access to free or reduced-cost test prep for the specialized high schools, and that a single test not be the only source of admission to the specialized high schools.

Be Prepared to Buy Now

ummer is here and home buying in Harlem is heating up! Housing indicators show a significant increase in home sales for the first two quarters of this year. The demand for housing remains greater than the available supply, pushing up home values.

More millennials are entering the home buying market. They realize that it is cheaper to own than to rent. These new buyers understand the benefits associated with homeownership. It meets their current housing need while at the same time providing a future investment.

Some of the benefits of homeownership include accumulating equity in the property as you pay down the outstanding loan amount. Homeowners also receive additional tax breaks

because mortgage interest and property taxes are deductible expenses. Plus, a portion of the closing cost, transfer tax and other expenses may be deducted. Check with your accountant to know exactly which expenses are deductible.

There are several grant programs offering financial assistance to first-time buyers, including New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Home First Down Payment Assistance. This program will provide eligible first-time buyers with 6% of the sales price up to $25,000. This grant can be used for either closing costs or down payment, while making your purchase even more affordable. To be eligible for this program you must be (1) be a first-time home buyer, (2) buy in

New York City, (3) complete the home buyer education workshop, (4) meet the household income and family guidelines and (5) use an authorized lender.

I suggest you hasten your efforts to find affordable property and make a reasonable offer.

There are some excellent deals to be found in Harlem. The Housing Development Fund Cooperatives (HDFC) are the most affordable units. These buildings can be difficult to locate so it is a good idea to work with a local real estate broker specializing in these properties.

“When I was a little girl, my mother always took me for a tour on the Circle Line for my birthdays and I have wonderful memories of those parties. The Circle Line is in my heart so I was absolutely thrilled when they asked me to be the Godmother today” said an emotional Brooke while holding the champagne bottle to christen the boat.

he great and the good of Harlem and beyond came out to celebrate and support the Apollo Theater at its annual Spring Gala.

More than a thousand people attended the gala June 12 at the theater, where performers including CeeLo Green, Sheila E. and Charlie Wilson rocked the house during the awards show and concert, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer on June 12 inside the famed space.

CeeLo Green - in a shiny suit - kicked things off with a duet of his hit “Crazy” with “The Voice” finalist We McDonald. Next up was Sheila E., who

Wilson ended the show with a bang, belting out his hits, “You Dropped A Bomb On Me,” “Yearning For Your Love” and “Outstanding” to a standing ovation.

Apollo Theater CEO Jonelle Procope said the importance of the Apollo’s role as “part of New York’s cultural scene,” is just as important today as when it opened in 1934. Harlem’s Heaven Hat Boutique Holds Seventh Annual Hat Giveaway Day

or the seventh year in a row, Harlem’s Heaven Hat Boutique held its annual free hat giveaway day on the evening of Thursday, June 22, 2017. Harlem’s Heaven Hat is owned by Evetta Petty and her boutique is a member of the Headwear Association, which sponsors the annual event. “Hat Day in the Sun” is to raise public awareness and educate adults and children how the right hat can protect against skin cancer, sun damage and premature aging. Members of the association give away free wide-brimmed sun-protection hats in cities across the country.

Many people of color believe that that the melanin in our skin color protects us and that skin cancer is a problem for white people. Well I’m here to tell you don’t believe that myth.

My Aunt Mamie, who was dark brown like me and lived in Sa-

vannah, Georgia, died from skin cancer.

There are so many medications you might take for acne, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, irregular heart rhythm, psoriasis plus assorted antibiotics and cholesterol-lowering drugs that make your skin more sun and heat sensitive. It’s very important to read the paper work the pharmacist gives you when you pick up your prescription; don’t just throw it out – read it for the side effects.

Now the hat giveaway started at 6pm and went on for two and a half hours until 8:30pm. I arrived 45 minutes earlier than the door opening for the event and the line went from its corner location on 147th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and it was heading up 147th Street toward Frederick Douglass Boulevard.

The Headwear Association recommends the follow tips for the perfect sun hat.

Wide Brims – choose hats with at least a 2 ½ inch brims and always wear sunscreen

and a hat when outside. Women’s hats with brims larger than 5 inches will also cover your shoulders and chest.

Curved Shapes – look for hats that follow the contour of the head and neck; will offer best protection against ultraviolet radiation. Baseball caps leave the cheeks, ears and back of the neck exposed.

Opaque Materials – the denser the fabric the higher ultraviolet protection factor (UPF); sunscreens have the sun protection factor (SPF). A hat with a UPF of 50 allows just 1/50th of the sun’s UVR to reach the skin.

I learned some valuable lessons from losing a loved one to skin cancer and from talking to

r. Brent W. Laartz thought he was in for the ride of his lifetime when he set out on a horseback riding excursion in Costa Rica.

Admittedly younger and more naïve than he is today, Laartz – an infectious disease specialist and author of the book How to Avoid Contagious Diseases (www. drlaartz.com) – failed to take some of the precautions souvenir of a major illness from their trip.

“While on vacation it becomes entirely necessary to be more observant of the conditions that are in place that could harm you,” Laartz says.

Laartz offers tips on

how to protect yourself on your next trip and to make sure the ride of a lifetime doesn’t turn into the worst ride of your life: • Avoid local water in all forms. When you shower, don’t ingest the water and don’t be afraid

to ask for a drink without ice. In lesser developed countries there is less infrastructure for clean water, effective sewage and public health. If you can’t avoid unsanitary water, make sure you have iodine tablets and bring along a tea or cof-

fee-making device that will boil water for you.

Furthermore, you should buy a case or two of water when you arrive at a destination and check that all bottle caps are sealed to assure the bottled water isn’t just a refilled bottle of dirty, parasite-infested tap water.

• Protect your feet at all times. Use flip flops in the shower, and if you must be barefoot, put a towel down on the floor. Parasites can enter the skin of your feet and travel to different parts of the body. For the same reason that you should wear flip flops in the shower, you should never walk barefoot in any area

of a foreign country, including your hotel room.

• Beware of fruits, vegetables and condiments. If a fruit such as apples or bananas – which can both be peeled – isn’t available, it’s best to avoid. Any fruit or vegetable served fresh may have been washed in the same water, or wiped with the same rag used to clean work surfaces in kitchens. The best advice is to bring your own peeler so that you know nothing unsanitary has been applied to the fruit. Food such as potato salad and coleslaw, which contain uncooked mayonnaise, should also be avoided.

• By-pass the roadside stands. The aroma coming from that roadside stand or little corner of an open-air market might smell great, but unless the food is piping hot when served, the best idea is to leave it alone. If you are concerned about the sanitation of a restaurant, order the food to go.

Styrofoam boxes may be cleaner than the plate or fork on the table.

“How you protect yourself will determine whether your trip goes off without a hiccup,” Laartz says, “or whether you become another vacation casualty.”

e all know that water is very important for our health; the lack of water can be deadly.

There are many types of drinking water options available but it is important to understand some drinking water can be more helpful to your overall self-health strategies then others.

I believe the best water to drink to maximize your health is ionized alkaline water. On a pH scale from 3.0 to 10, ionized alkaline water is between 9.0 and 10. Most commercial bottled water is in the 5.0pH

rom time to time I like to remind you to stop and smell the roses. There are many opportunities to do so, but we tend to try and accomplish too many tasks, obligations and responsibilities within the limited number of hours we have each day. For the sake of this week’s article I am going to call those aforementioned tasks etc . . . “noise.” The “noise” is a constant din that forces itself into our consciousness and pushes us to keep up with the “Status-flow.”

It is because the world can sometimes be a very noisy place that I thought it would be interesting to consider the beauty of silence.

Now thinking about silence or anything resembling quiet can be a bit unnerving when you live in a city like New York. I thought about a trip that I took to London a few years ago, another hubbub of activity; the most striking difference between it and New York City, (aside from the architecture and other things

that make it unique) wasn’t apparent to me until after I returned home. The difference?

Although the streets are bustling with activity, the noise was missing!

There weren’t any loud boom boxes, or rowdy young folks being well . . . young. People almost whispered their conversations to one another . . . there weren’t even any crying babies. Everyone seemed to be so . . . quiet! It caught me by surprise. But the silence made me notice other things, like the rustling of a newspaper or a gentle sigh, or the wind ruffling the trees, the sound of a gurgling fountain, the hiss of the hydraulic lift on a bus, the click of a camera, chirping birds

even. It seemed that no one was willing to break the silence lest they intrude upon someone else’s experience . . . it was a beautiful thing!

Have you allowed time for silence in your life? Move away from “noise” to a place where you can appreciate silence and spend as much time as you can to relish the peacefulness that discovering newness brings to your life. Step away from the “Status-Flow” for a few moments of quiet. If you say that you don’t have time then you are underestimating the value that silence can contribute to improving the quality of your life. Think about it.

“Jabari Jumps”

ou can do it.

Yes, you can.

You just need to take a deep breath and then blow it out. Find the courage inside yourself. Think of something else and do it.

Don’t be scared. As you’ll see in “Jabari Jumps”

by Gaia Cornwall, good things come to those who get brave and take the leap.

Jabari loved to swim.

He was really good at it, too. He’d gone to all his swimming lessons and he passed every test. He was so good at swimming that he was ready to jump off the diving board. He even told his dad about it.

The diving board was “high and maybe a little scary…” There were a lot

of rungs to climb to get to the top - Jabari could tell that from the side of the pool.

Other kids on top of the diving board looked tiny from below as they sprang up and splashed down into the water. It was a long, long way to dive, but Jabari thought it looked like fun – and besides, he was a “great jumper.”

As he stood by the ladder, he looked up. Way up.

Then he turned around and looked at the other kids in line. They’d been standing there awhile; maybe they should go first. In fact, maybe a “tiny rest” was a good idea before tackling such a huge thing. And oh, Jabari forgot to do his stretches before swimming – that’s very important. Maybe tomorrow

would be better for diving off the board.

But then Daddy said something that Jabari never thought about. Daddy knew exactly what Jabari was thinking, and he had some helpful advice. There were many ways to dive off a board and into a pool. You can jump feet-first or with your arms above your head, backwards or forwards, straight or flipping head over feet, but there was only one way to get to the top to do it.

And so Jabari did…

More than three out of five Americans don’t know how to swim. In the African American community, that number is considerably higher. “Jabari Jumps” may

help fix that.

It’s okay to love swimming, according to author Gaia Cornwall’s energetic little main character. It’s okay to get all wet and take swim lessons. It’s actually fun, and Cornwall’s illustrations make it seem so.

But, as your child will see, it’s also okay to be scared of doing something you’ve never done before.

In this, Cornwall makes it clear to even the smallest youngster that Jabari’s faux-bravery is wavering even as he brags about his big plans in the pool.

There’s plenty of reassurance here, though; Jabari’s father is a great supporting character, understanding and calm with no belittling.

In the end, well, I’m sure you know where this book

goes. Kids might, too, and it’s a joyous finale that will leave young readers with a smile and maybe an urge to learn to swim. If that’s what you want to foster in your child, then give him “Jabari

Jumps.” Do it.

2 CAN DO TIP #8 2017 Revisit Your Tradition In this week’s 52 Can Do’s series we’ll take a look at the African Heritage Diet (AHD) as a way of eating based on the healthy food traditions of people with African roots. The African Heritage Diet was developed by a non-profit organization, Oldwayspt. org which has been around since the 1990’s and whose mission is to develop resources to help consumers embrace traditional diets and use healthy ingredients.

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Sade Anderson, Program Manager of African Heritage and Health at OldWays. It was an enlightening discussion about food, culture, our heritage and how it relates to our health.

Part I – Interview: MM: What is the African Heritage & Health program about?

SA: African Heritage & Health is a 6 week cooking curriculum which focuses on four regions of the African diaspora – American south, Caribbean, Afro-Latin America and Africa. So tracing foods that come from Africa that are shared throughout the African diaspora that many people don’t know come from Africa.

MM: Give us some examples of foods that we might not have known are actually rooted in Africa.

SA: Foods like black eye peas, foods like yam, like watermelon, sesame seeds… many people don’t know these things are native to Africa.

MM: Wow… I would have thought watermelon was native to American south? You think watermelon you think Georgia, North Carolina…

SA: Most people think that…but, knowing that our ancestors brought these seeds with them, on their bodies, on their person, usually in their hair…on ships, enroute to the new world –they also brought their agricultural skills, which is one reason we were brought

here to begin with; and replanted those foods once we got here. So now of course we’ve grown accustomed to them; not realizing they are our foods.

MM: So that explains why we love watermelon!

It’s been used against us [the idea of only blacks loving watermelon] but it really is an extremely nutritious food that everybody loves.

MM: While we’re at it, let’s talk collard greens!

Right… so, for instance collard greens themselves are not native to Africa, they are native to Europe.

However black people have popularized collard greens and made them delicious. Now, we’re helping people take out the unhealthy things like fat back and to not cook them to death, so part of it is reintroducing recipes people are familiar and making healthier versions of it. Adding to that, jollof rice which many African

staple and ingredients like millet are all rooted in Africa.

Note: Jollof rice, also called “Benachin”, is a one-pot rice dish popular in many West African countries. The main ingredients include rice, tomatoes, tomato paste, onions, cooking oil. Millet is an ancient grain often associated with bird seed. It is also gluten free.
