Earlier this month on June 19th we celebrated Juneteenth which is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Velma Banks keeps the celebration alive in Harlem each year. (see page 10) June 19th has also been deemed “World Sickle Cell Day.” People of color are particularly susceptible to have the Sickle Cell disease and trait. PATIENTS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS OBSERVE WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY

I

t’s been 100 years since sickle cell disease (SCD), a hereditary blood disorder, was first discovered.

And, according to health experts, it’s no secret that an alarming number of children and adolescence have died, and the condition remained in the province of pediatrics.

Known as “the silent killer,” SCD is one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States where about 100,000 citizens currently live with the disease.

Tuesday, June 19 was deemed World Sickle Cell Day. Researchers said approximately 270,000 babies worldwide are born each year with sickle cell disease.

With one in 365 African American babies born with SCD and one in 13 born with the trait, Black people are disproportionately affected by the disease, which also primarily affects those of Latin American, Indian, Mediterranean and Middle

Eastern descent.

Actress and director KC Morse, one of the many African Americans living with SCD, recalled her first major pain crisis, where she didn’t have the support of her loved ones.

Morse told NNPA Newswire that she was attending college in Allentown, Pennsylvania while her parents were three hours away in Connecticut on a late Saturday night when she returned to her dorm room and began experiencing the excruciating pain known to just about every SCD patient.

“It was my first experience on my own outside of my comfort zone,” said Morse, now 25. “When it happened, I was really afraid to call anyone. It was 2 a.m. and I felt alone, and I wasn’t sure about calling an ambulance or campus safety because I wasn’t sure they’d understand.”

Like so many others battling the disease, Morse said she often has to

give way to the limitations imposed

by SCD. “One of my biggest challenges is that I’ve always been a very busy person. I studied in school theater and we’ve had exhausting rehearsals until 11 p.m. and there was homework and I joined a sorority,” she said. “I loved being busy, but I had to realize that I had to slow down because I needed rest because exhaustion triggers attacks and crisis.”

Morse said things were a little different in high school, where students go home after school and are afforded the opportunity to rest and hit the reset button.

“In college, you’re on your own and creating your own schedule and I realized that I wasn’t giving myself time to rest and recuperate,” she said.

“It took a long time to realize that I can’t do that, and I have to know when to say ‘no’ to things and I had to realize that keeping hydrated is a key and when you’re very busy, water isn’t something you think about,

but it affects me. Most of my severe attacks were, because of dehydration.”

Dr. Biree Andemariam, a noted hematologist, associate professor of medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center, and founder and director of the adult sickle cell center at the New England Sickle Cell Institute, said Morse’s experience and reaction isn’t uncommon.

However, Dr. Andemariam said the tide is slowly beginning to turn as more people become aware of SCD. “The disease is not anything to be ashamed of,” said Dr. Andemariam, who also serves as Chief Medical Officer on the board of directors for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America.

“Researchers and doctors are really beginning to understand the impact of chronic pain [although] many people living with SCD typically don’t let friends or extended family know about the diagnosis,” she said.

Dr. Andemariam continued:

“It’s really important for families to understand that no one did anything wrong and, as far as we can tell, with medical advances people are living longer now.”

Morse said that she plans to launch a new video series on Facebook depicting what it’s like living with SCD, which will appear on the page, “Spotlight on Sickle Cell Disease.”

“I think people need to be aware of SCD and there’s a need to start a national discussion,” Dr. Andemariam said.

Still, Dr. Andemariam added, that there’s a lot more education and advocacy occurring across the country and there’s enhanced education in the medical community.

“The focus today is on the effect of having SCD; on the social and emotional well-being of those living with the disease,” Dr. Andemariam said. “There’s lots of efforts underway to broaden the medical community and empower patients

to have the best knowledge and to develop patterns that will ensure they will have access to medical care and finding out who the best physicians are in their community.”

For Morse, who is producing and starring in the upcoming New York stage show, “Tumbleweed,” World Sickle Cell Disease Day, is a time to reflect and count her blessings, she said.

“I try to live my best life and I think somedays are good and somedays are bad. I’ve been very fortunate to have good days and have family and friends who have been extremely supportive,” Morse said.

“I can’t imagine having this disease without having people there holding my hand and telling me it’s going to be okay.”

ver the past few months I have heard of some common mistakes that prospective first-time buyers have made in attempting to complete the home buying process. It is important to understand same basic do’s and don’ts of the home process so you can avoid making any costly mistakes.

Here are some things to consider: (1) Do not make an offer on a home until you have a pre-approval letter from an authorized lender. Know how much you can afford to spend on a monthly mortgage payment. Understand the various types of mortgage products and determine which one is most suitable for you. If you make an offer before getting a pre-approval your deposit

may be in jeopardy.

(2) Sign nothing until your attorney has reviewed the sales contract. Sit down with your attorney and go over the contract with him/her until you completely understand all the legal ramifications. Once you have signed the contract, it is a legally binding document. It can be very difficult and/or costly to get out of the agreement.

(3) Do not allow anyone to select the members of your home buying team for you.

Get referrals from your housing counselor or people you trust who have just recently completed the home buying process. Do not under any circumstances do what is called “a one stop shop” where the entire team is pre-selected.

(4) Attend an approved

housing counseling workshop at the beginning of the process. The home buying workshop will give you tremendous insights on how to navigate through the dangerous and tricky waters of negotiating a purchase price, determining the right type of property for your specific needs, and selecting a team of professionals.

You will learn industry terminology, mortgage products and available grant programs. You will acquire the confidence needed to complete the process and to successfully become a homeowner.

Monica Ramirez highlighted her organizations work in drawing attention to the pervasive problem of sexual harassment experienced by women farmworkers.

Ramirez also mentioned the horrific treatment of separating immigrant families by the Trump administration.

he Latinx community filled David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center for AT&T’s Humanity of Connection Awards last Wednesday, honoring Monica Ramirez, founder of Alianza Nacional De Campesinas (National Farmworkers Women’s Alliance); Armando Correa, editor-in-chief of People En Español; and #ChefsforPuertoRico representatives Ricardo Rivera, Griselle Mariana Vila and Erin Azaria Schrode The night opened with Latin Jazz and Salsa performed by Grammy nominated percussionist Bobby Sanabria and his band.

CNN Political Commentator Maria Cardona was the emcee.

“This celebration of what we’ve brought to this great nation could not have come at a better time,” said Cardona, referencing Trump’s policy of separating immigrant families at the border.

“The images we have all seen. . .of mamis and papis being torn apart from their families. . .these images have been heart wrenching and shaken us to the core,” she said.

While Trump signed an executive order the same day to end the policy of separating families, the order does not address what will happen to the 2,300 children who have already been disconnected from their guardians.

Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio gave a short address in which she described

the history of the U.S. as a history deeply impacted by the contributions of Latinx people who immigrated such as her own family of Afro-Cuban decent. “American is great because of immigrants, no inspite of them,” said Palacio.

“More than half of NYC businesses are immigrant owned and more than one in 3 New Yorkers is an immigrant, with Latinos being the largest immigrant group.”

The event included a performance by Puerto Rican Poet Mariposa and a screening of a short documentary “Sin Limites” (“Without Limits”) directed by Rafael Jimenez, which featured interviews with Bronx Borough

n June 19, 2018, Velma Banks, MSW, facilitator/producer of educational and cultural events, presented her 11th annual JUNETEENTH gathering in Harlem.

Banks, born and reared in Marshall, Texas is stalwart in keeping this historical date on our hearts and minds.

“It’s a Happy Birthday to Freedom Day,” she says, with all the vim and vigor she can muster to revive the poignant moment when black people in a small town first heard the word – FREE. Velma Banks has been on a mission to gather like-minded folk and even those who are still unaware of the importance of taking time to remember, reflect and rejoice on JUNETEENTH, the African

American Independence Day. Reverend Rashad Moore of The Abyssinian Baptist Church, always the preacher plus, delivered “The Freedom Word.” Moore’s words of hope and courage reminded us that our ancestors gave us tradition, nobody gave us freedom, they were trying to save the nation.

The call now is to resist.

The buffet offered symbolic reminders of Juneteenth fixings: Greens, salads, both potato and chicken; codfish and barbequed chicken wings; various cakes and sweet loaves, red juice with ginger and of course, the crème de la crème, cold, sweet watermelon.

REFLECTION? What had happened…On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” Those were profound words on paper, but not everyone got the memo.

On June 19, 1865, almost two and a half years after the original signing, Union Army Major General Gordan Granger finally arrived in Galveston, Texas to read GENERAL ORDER 3, stating “The people of Texas are

uneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years.

Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another, is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another, is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation 10 Proclamation. All of which, or neither of

these version could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln’s authority over the rebellious states was in question For whatever the reasons, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory.

General Order Number 3 One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”

The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former ‘masters’ - attesting to the varying conditions on the plantations and the realization of freedom. Even with nowhere to go, many felt that leaving the plantation would be their first grasp of freedom. North was a logical destination and for many it represented true freedom, while the desire to reach family members in neighboring

states drove the some into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Settling into these new areas as free men and women brought on new realities and the challenges of establishing a heretofore non-existent status for black people in America. Recounting the memories of that great day in June of 1865 and its festivities would serve as motivation as well as a release from the growing pressures encountered in their new territory.

The celebration of June 19th was coined “Juneteenth” and grew with more participation from descendants. The Juneteenth celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members. Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades later, with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.

Juneteenth and Society In the early years, little interest existed outside the African American community in participation in the celebrations. In some cases, there was outwardly exhibited resistance by barring the use of public property for the festivities. Most of the festivities found themselves out in rural areas around rivers and creeks that could provide for additional activities such as fishing,horseback riding and barbecues. Often the church grounds was the site for such activities. Eventually, as African Americans became land owners, land was donated and dedicated for these

festivities. One of the earliest documented land purchases in the name of Juneteenth was organized by Rev. Jack Yates. This fund-raising effort yielded $1000 and the purchase of Emancipation Park in Houston, Texas. In Mexia, the local Juneteenth organization purchased Booker T. Washington Park, which had become the Juneteenth celebration site in 1898. There are accounts of Juneteenth activities being interrupted and halted by white landowners demanding that their laborers return to work. However, it seems most allowed their workers the day off and some even made donations of food and money. For decades these annual celebrations flourished, growing continuously with each passing year. In Booker T. Washington Park, as many as 20,000 African Americans once flowed through during the course of a week, making the celebration one of the state’s largest.

June 19th became JUNETEENTH, a combination of two words, “June” and “nineteenth” which would forever commemorate that announcement. As the freedmen and women “scattered” across Texas and other states, the day became a tradition with cookouts and family reunions.

Texas became the first state to make JUNETEENTH an official holiday in 1979.

The Depression forced many people off the farms and into the cities to find work.

In these urban environments, employers were less eager to grant leaves to celebrate this date. Thus, unless June 19th fell on a weekend or holiday, there were very few participants available. July 4th was the already established Independence holiday and a rise in patriotism steered more toward this celebration.

Resurgence The Civil Rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s yielded both positive and negative results for the Juneteenth celebrations. While it pulled many of the African American youth away and into the struggle for racial equality, many linked these struggles to the historical struggles of their ancestors. This was evidenced by student demonstrators involved in the Atlanta civil rights campaign in the early 1960’s, whom wore Juneteenth freedom buttons. Again in 1968, Juneteenth received another strong resurgence through Poor Peoples March to Washington D.C..Rev. Ralph Abernathy’s call for people of all races, creeds, economic levels and professions to come to Washington to show support for the poor. Many of these attendees returned home and initiated Juneteenth celebrations in areas previously absent of such activity. In fact, two of the largest Juneteenth celebrations founded after this March are now held in Milwaukee andMinneapolis.

Today, Juneteenth is enjoying a phenomenal growth rate within communities and organizations throughout the country. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. In recent years, a number of local and national Juneteenth organizations have arisen to take their place along side older organizations - all with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.

The future of Juneteenth looks bright as the number of cities and states creating Juneteenth committees continues to increase. Respect and appreciation for all of our differences grow out of exposure and working together. Getting involved and supporting Juneteenth celebrations creates new bonds of friendship and understanding among us. This indeed, brightens our future - and that is the Spirit of Juneteenth.

IAAFestival began in 1971 as a fundraiser for the Uhuru Sasa Shule (Freedom Now School), a community-based initiative that strove for academic excellence in

youth as well as instill in them, along with adults, an awareness about African culture. The fundraiser was a small festival with about 20 arts and crafts vendors, local entertainers, and food prepared by parents of the students who attended Uhuru Sasa Shule.

Almost 2,000 people came to the event and the fundraiser was a major success. That early format of integrating entertainment, food, and marketplace drew increasing crowds annually and the event became known as the African Street Carnival. Four years later, The Carnival was moved to the field at Boys and Girls High

School in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. There, the event became the African Street Festival.

Today, the event is known as the International African Arts Festival and has an estimated annual audience of 75,000. While still held in Brooklyn, The Festival is now in its fourth transition to a larger venue. The original approach of showcasing local arts and entertainment is still paramount even while The Festival has expanded to feature world known artists from a wide variety of musical genres.

s the weather warms, people tackle much-needed home maintenance projects, but for New York City’s seniors even minor home repairs are physically and financially impossible.

That is why, each year, thousands of seniors in the five boroughs take advantage of the free Minor Home Repair and Safety Audit Programoperated by the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens (NYFSC).

From gutter cleaning and weather-stripping to minor plumbing and electrical issues, the Minor Home Repair

Program provides free repairs for senior owners of private homes, condos and co-ops with limited finances. Eligible homeowners must be at least 60 years old and reside in the home.

Yearly income may not exceed $53,451 for a one-person household or $61,051 for a two-person household.

New York City’s seniors are also eligible for free home safety audits to identify and correct safety hazards in their homes. Safety audits and repairs are completed by highly experienced and skilled professionals.

“New York Foundation’s Minor Home Re-

pair Program has been a lifesaver. I never could afford to do the home repairs that they do for me.

The man who comes, Bruce, is the most wonderful person you could ever want to meet. It’s so reassuring to be able to depend on someone that you don’t have to pay a ton of money, which I don’t have,” said 72-year-old Anne Blom, a Minor Home Repair Program participant since 2013. “I recommend the program to anyone who is in a financial situation where you just can’t afford to pay for home repairs.”

In addition to making the repairs, the program is also able

to provide select materials to get the job done, including smoke alarms, outlet covers and caulking material.

“Our Minor Home Repair Program helps protect seniors from dishonest vendors, potential financial scams and other situations that would increase their sense of vulnerability,” said Linda Hoffman, President of New York Foundation for Senior Citizens. “Having a safety check is crucial to ensure that other New Yorkers remain healthy, safe and independent.”

Services Provided: • Safety and Security: Installation of locks, window gates,

smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and other security features; screen repairs, window pane repairs and replacements • Plumbing: Faucet repair and installation; unclogging drains, toilet repairs • Carpentry: Securing loose floor boards, stairs, railings and treads • Electric and heating: Minor non-structural electrical repairs; addressing minor heating and cooling problems • Home maintenance: Cleaning and repair of drain pipes and gutters; painting and patching walls and

The Green Revolution

he Harlem Business Alliance www.hbany.org coordinated a Cannabis and entrepreneurship summit on June 21st at the National Black Theatre. The opening address was given by New York Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes. Assemblywoman Stokes is the sponsor of Assembly Bill 3506 which calls for the legalizing Marijuana the production, sale, recreational and medical use of Cannabis for adults over the 21.

The bill will also focus on the long-term damaging effects that people of color have suffered over the years for simple marijuana possession even when there is no con-

viction. Being denied access to housing, educational and employment opportunities are but a few. There is no longer a question of if Cannabis will be legalized in New York State the question is when.

Now that the movement for the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana is becoming recognized across the country the focus of the HBA summit was to begin a dialog to make sure African-Americans are not locked out of the business opportunities that will become available. There were two discussion panels the first focused on policy change issues and the second panel focused on build-

ing a cannabusiness.

The need for a better understanding of the medical use of marijuana has been the first important step towards marijuana legalization in states across the country and will be a major reason why Canada is very close to becoming one of the first countries to fully legalize the use of recreational and medical marijuana nationally.

made marijuana a section 1 classified drug. This classification will soon change for many reasons.

In 1938 New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia appointed a committee of scientist to study the medical, sociological, and psychological aspects of marijuana use in New York City. The facts of the La Guardia study published in 1944 dispelled many of the myths about the medical use of marijuana. The study is still being used by lobbyist across the country when addressing the value of medical marijuana as a health treatment option. It was used by the late State assemblyman Anthony Oliveri who lobbied to New

York State legislators to legalize medical marijuana until his untimely death at the age of 39 from a brain tumor. Tony Oliveri gave the use of medical marijuana credit for allowing him to address the side effects of chemotherapy allowing him to continue his work which was the foundation for New York Sates current medical marijuana legislation.

During the hot summer months negative emotions of anger, worry, sadness, fear and impatience should be avoided as much as possible. If the small intestine becomes over loaded with negative emotions it can become unhealthy. An unhealthy small intestine can cause hormonal and menstrual disorders for women. It can also develop mucus in the lungs and be the cause of back pain and varicose veins.

tions of anger and sadness can create problems for a weak heart but worry and fear can also have a negative effect on the heart.

h, life is funny.

Every once in a while it gives you a wake-up call, and when it does the alarm seems to go off even louder than usual. Maybe it has happened to you lately or maybe it has been a while, but regardless; whenever it happens life manages to get

your attention immediately. How do you react? There are, of course, many ways to respond. Some of us ignore it and continue along our merry way.

There are those of us who hear it and pull the covers back over our head and sleep through it. Or maybe you’re the type to swat at it hoping to stop the ring. Could it be that you always decide instead to hit the snooze button? How about those noble few who jump up immediately and rush to make changes? No matter where you fall in the mix, one thing is for sure . . . you have to make a decision to do

one thing or another!

Now this is a bit abstract, so humor me . . . Doing nothing requires the tenacity to ignore the call completely, because if you heard it once, surely you will be destined to hear it again. Making a decision to respond later means that you have but a short while before you hear it again. If you respond immediately, before thinking about what life is trying to tell you then you risk making a mistake. The truth is that whatever you decide to do there is risk involved. You have no way of knowing until you do something.

Confusing huh? Based

on your own perspective there are reasons to hesitate or not. So what to do?

Life is precious.

We have a tendency to think that we have plenty of time to do what we want with our lives. As each day passes, there are things like work and family that tend to consume all of our time and it’s easy to put things off.

Tomorrow’s another day, right? Wrong.

You never know what tomorrow will bring, but wouldn’t it be nice to “get a jump on ”what you might want it to bring? I think that life’s wake-up calls are subliminal messages to encourage us to shake

things up a bit. It is a signal to expand our possibilities in order to live a fuller life. There are obviously drawbacks and benefits to any response whether it is good, bad or indifferent; the choice is yours alone. As tempting as it is to say that anyone has the right answer, you hold the key to the adventure called life. Only the possibilities are endless, a lifetime isn’t; why wait? Think about it. See you next week.

h, the things you’ve heard!

You’ve been told statements that aren’t true, and that made you sad. Myths kept you from your full potential.

Tall tales were told to provoke you. And with the new book “I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness” by Austin Channing Brown, well, sit down. You’re about to get an eyeful.

“White people,” says Brown, “can be exhausting.”

They say racist things without awareness.

They’re racist, and pretend they’re not. For her, the problems begin when

she’s introduced to someone who’s taken aback by her “white man’s name.”

Her parents gave her the name as a leg-up but it just confuses white people because, Brown says, some of them actually expect her “to be white.”

Her awareness of this was hard-earned: as a child, she says, she “had to learn what it really means to love Blackness.” She attended a “predominately white” grade school but her parents gave her a foundation of black culture when she was young; still, when they divorced and moved apart, Brown felt awkward in her mother’s all-black neighborhood. It was a “culture

shock” until she learned her way; later, she was further delighted by college instructors who were Black, and who opened her eyes wider.

But back to the “exhausted” part: Brown is tired of being an unofficial teacher for white people. It’s not up to her to explain, repeatedly, why touching someone’s hair without permission is offensive. It’s not her responsibility to adjust to injustice at work. When white people worry about saying the wrong things, she’s tired of soothing their fears.

And yet – she’s heartened by white people who have “acknowledged the

shows: this book fairly seethes with it, for reasons large and small, the latter of which eventually become the former in her eyes. The anger serves to paint a wide swath of condemnation across an entire race - although later, Brown admits to quiet instances of hope, which is both surprising (vis-àvis the anger) and compelling.

Readers of this book can, of course, be of any race, but you’ll need an open mind; if you don’t

have that, not one word of “I’m Still Here” will mean a thing to you. On the other hand, if you don’t have an open mind, there are words in this book that maybe you need heard.

She’s glad for allies, and for people who accept responsibility for their own racism. She wants white people to learn “to listen, to pause so that people of color can clearly articulate” their disappointments and the repairs that are needed to heal.

Even then, says Brown, “the real work is yet to come.”

I wish you could see my copy of “I’m Still Here.” It’s littered with sticky flags and notes, reminders to explore, ideas to ponder, and thinking-points. Those are the things this book demands, but they won’t come easy.

Hope For Ex-Offenders

by Clarke Illmatical n June 21st, at the Queens Central Library in Jamaica, a panel met to discuss mass incarceration and social re-entry. Amongst the panelist were hip-hop legend Ralph McDaniels, of Video Music Box, Lithera Forbes, publisher of Hip-Hop Roses, Maxwell Melvins founder of the Grammy-nominated hiphop crew Lifers Group, Lance Feurtado of the King of Kings Foundation and Obafemi Wright, Supervisor of Volunteer Services at NYS Department of Corrections.

Those who’ve done time, and ostensibly paid their dues, often have a problem reintegrating

into society. Some of the issues they face include recidivism, mental health problems, lack of employment and readjusting to social environments.

One of the biggest issues, one that was a focus of the panel, was lack of employment. The speakers reiterated that reentry involves the individual ex-offender and also assistance from the community.

“There’s a strong need for the community to become more involved in the decision making, and prison reform, criminal justice reform,” said Melvins. “There’s a strong connection with ties to this library. Brother Ralph has the hip-hop program

here. It’s not just about music. It’s about saving lives and talking to these kids and giving them direction. Some of these rappers are sending them in the wrong direction.”

Melvins, who served 33 years in Rahway Prison, for murder, met Ralph McDaniels in prison in 1991, when McDaniels visited Rahway to interview the Lifers Group, which was formed to warn the youth about the dangers of crime and incarceration. As far as those, who say they want employment after serving time Melvins said “New York got it going on as far as re-entry. When you go into these places, guys are embarrassed. They don’t

When it comes to employment, the panel emphasized that ex-offenders should consider different employment strategies, ones were they can utilize their creativity. “I went and spoke to some of the brothers in there and told them what I do as a communications person.

Working in TV and film and how I got involved in that, to give them an idea, about some of the opportunities, the careers that exist where you don’t necessarily have to have a degree” said McDaniels.

Where should ex-offenders go if they haven’t had success with

re-entry? A great location is the Queens Central Library. There are services that can provide an identification card, security guard training and resume writing assistance.

Speaking of ex-offenders, Melvins said “Some of them don’t know how to do it. Some of them have too much pride to go and ask for the help.

The help is there, they have to ask… Go down to workforce development.

Ask them what type of program is available for ex-offenders. They need to follow up and make these appointments.”

Reentry isn’t something to be trivialized, however, it’s doable.

There are resources available, but it requires that ex-offenders apply themselves.

When it comes to reentry, women often have better success. The panel noted that female offenders often seek mental help, and since they want to be close to their families, the chance that they will commit another crime is relatively low.

“Women do not recidivate, they want to be with their families. They have children. There are a lot
