Seven-Step Guide to Turning Children into Young Adults with Healthy Savings Habits

s Jodi walked to class that day, the freshman noticed a large circle of booths spread out across the main courtyard of campus.

Scattered among the booths was one giving away free t-shirts with the school’s mascot on it.

All Jodi had to do to get the free swag was fill out a form. As a bonus she would receive this little plastic card that was practically free money.

Or so she thought.

Four years later she was stuck with a $5,000 t-shirt thanks to the debt she rang up.

• Help kids balance treats and sacrifices. Help your kids by setting, and meeting goals. Once those goals are met allow them a little withdrawal to buy something for themselves.

• Loose change goes to the emergency fund. Loose change can add up, so don’t let kids discard those pennies or leave them

lying in the parking lot – no matter if they are heads or tails up.

• Set an example.

Children don’t miss much, and if they don’t see you saving, they might wonder why they need to save.

• Keep kids away from credit as long as possible. Credit card companies have large marketing budgets and much of those funds are spent on marketing to older teenagers. Make sure he or she understands what credit pitfalls may be ahead.

• Schedule money

There are several factors you must consider in narrowing down your choices to help make your decision easier. Here are 3 essential factors to assist you in selecting the type of home you should purchase: (1) – Make sure the price and the monthly payments are affordable. By affordable, I mean can you comfortably afford the mortgage payments along with your other monthly household obligations. Therefore, your monthly household budget is critical in determining just how much you can afford or want to pay for your home.

Remember the bank will determine your pre-approval amount based on your gross monthly income, but you only have your net income to pay your expenses. It is no good to purchase property you cannot afford even if the bank is willing to lend you the money.

The financial burden you will experience in making the higher monthly payments is not worth the emotional or physical stress.

(2) – Make sure the size of the property meets your needs.

It does not make sense to purchase a home that is too small just because you can afford it.

Adequate space is extremely difficult to find especially if you want to stay in Harlem, but take your time with your search, work closely with your

real estate agent, constantly search the real estate websites and be patient. Don’t settle for a home just because of the price.

(3) – Make sure the location safe. New York City can be a dangerous place. Make sure that your home and community is safe as possible. I had a conversation with Rafael and asked him what inspired him to write this thought-provoking play. He said that rape, molestation or incest on boys is seldom reported. He added that he often met men who have been abused but the shame and stigma attached to it prevents them from revealing the truth. This is a play about men, how they communicate with one another and how they can be vulnerable with one another

and not have it be a sign of weakness. “I want this play to send a strong message to the audience. There are predators who target boys specifically because boys are not likely to talk about being attacked. We must all recognize and fight this violence.”

Rafael is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Construct Theater Company. He created this company because as an actor, he always wanted to be

he 45th annual Harlem International Skyscraper Cycling Classic was a wonderful father’s day event that had something for everyone. The day started out a little wet but that did not stop the runners in the Harlem United one-mile run. This early morning event has been part of the

Skyscraper Classic for the past few years. Men and women plus children starting at three years old participated in a series of one-mile race.

After the mile run the cycle races started. The youth races were first and they were a fun experience for youth of all ages. This was the vision that David Walker, the founder of the Father’s

Day Cycling Classic, had when he started this Harlem event in 1973.

Walker was a community affairs officer at Harlem’s 28th precinct. He created the event as a way to teach neighborhood youth bike safety and introduce them to the world of amateur and professional cycling. David’s selection of Marcus Garvey Park (known then as

Mount Morris Park) was brilliant. The area around the park is the best urban cycle course in New York City, which is why in only a few years, local, national and international cyclists started riding in this annual event. .

A new addition to the annual Father’s Day Cycling Classic was the International Brompton Bicycle United States

Championship.

The Brompton folding bicycle has become an international favorite for biking in urban cities throughout the world.

Each year, racing championships are held in different countries and the winners in the men’s division, the women’s division and a team division receive a free trip to London, England (home

of the Brompton Bicycle Company) to participate in a final international race. The Harlem Skyscraper Classic was the site selected by Brompton for the first American championship race.

The Brompton championship races are internationally known for the unique rules of the race.

All racers have to be dressed in business attire.

Skyscraper Cycling Classic The 80-plus riders that participated in the race were very creative and colorful in their racing outfits.

The other unique feature of this race is the start. Each rider’s bike is folded and placed a few yards in front of the starting line. When the starting signal is given, the riders must run to their bikes, assemble them, and begin the race. It was a colorful and fun event for both the riders and the spectators.

From the collective positive response received by this event there is a strong possibility that the Brompton American championship will be back in 2018.

Long-suffering people with chronically sore ankles, knees, or elbows try everything from ice to physical therapy to surgery to bring relief to their aching body parts.

But researchers delving more deeply into the problem have found that a better solution may lie in a surprising location – the person’s own hair.
