The stand is not open every day due to other commitments of the owners, but if you are very lucky you may have a chance to sample their delicious cookies (chocolate and raspberry when I stopped by), iced tea or strawberry lemonade. Community celebrates 50 years of bringing Afro-Latino history to NYC streets with Loíza Festival in El Barrio July 28-30

Sunday is marked by the traditional ritual Processional of Saints, connecting this hallmark of the festivities in Puerto Rico with the interpretation of the African diaspora while offering a lively display of Loiza culture in an urban New York City setting. The general public is encouraged to join the procession that departs from St. Cecilia Church at 106th Street and Park Avenue at 1pm.

Marta Moreno Vega, founder and president of CCCADI, one of the Festival’s organizers.

“It is an important time to be an Afro-descendant, as our culture continues to provide safes paces, at a challenging

moment when our Black and Latino communities are under attack. Spaces like the Loiza Festival connect us to our history of political resistance and struggles for civil rights.

It strengthens our resolve to continue organizing as a community, defending our people, culture, and place in history.”

This year, the festival will feature a special street naming in honor of one of its fierce founders, Aida Perez, who died in 2012 after a life

of bringing Afro-Boricua history to NYC streets.

Aida Pérez and other community members of Los Hermanos Fraternos de Loiza, including Carmelo Acosta Lacen, Rafael Sanjurgo, Pablo and Macho Lacen, started the festival in 1967 aiming to replicate the annual celebrations of their hometown of Loiza, Puerto Rico, founded by the descendants of enslaved Africans who settled in Loiza and maintained their roots and traditions as a

ith a three-day cultural blast, the Annual Festival Santiago Apóstol de Loíza in El Barrio celebrates a half century of African influence of the Puerto Rican and Latino immigrant communities in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood.

Fondly known as the #LoízaFestival in El Barrio, the summer cultural event will commemorate 50 years of infusing Afro-Boricua flavor to New York City. Traditional African diaspora costumes, music, dance, hand crafts, and food come to the Festival’s new location on E. 109th Street between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue from July 28 to July 30.

The festival kicks off on Friday with a fun-filled child-friendly day of cultural arts and craft workshops, games, face painting, magicians and more.

Saturday welcomes some of the most awaited elements of the festival--vibrant live performances of bomba, plena and salsa, sounds that make the Afro-Latino rhythms reverberate throughout the city.

Among the celebrated performers to follow on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 will be Milteri Tucker & Bombazo; Mateo y Cumbalaya; Bronx Charanga, Ellas Son, Son de Monte, Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez (of the Tito Puente orchestra), Legacy Women, Los Pleneros de la 21, Nelson Ramirez y Herencia de Mi Tambo, and Flaco Navaja & The Razor Blades, among others.

he ‘rent to own’ home buying arrangement is a creative option that some prospective firsttime buyers who are not quite ‘mortgage ready’ are considering. Right now, they would not be approved for a mortgage because of problems regarding work history, savings, or credit. So, ‘renting to own’ may be a viable option.

The advantage of this plan is it will allow you to increase your savings and improve your credit to obtain the mortgage, while occupying the property.

Most of the time, a stipulation must be specified in the lease agreement that a percentage of the rent is set aside toward the down payment. However, if you are unable to make the purchase by the completion of

the lease, you stand to lose the money that has been designated for the down payment.

There are some potential problems with this agreement, such as: (1) The seller must agree to these terms. Most sellers are anxious to sell their homes as soon as possible and are not interested in renting.

(2) Unless otherwise specified, today’s home values will determine the sales price. The property value may increase or decrease by the actual sales date, making it difficult to obtain a mortgage if the value has gone down from the agreed upon amount.

(3) You will still need a pre-approval letter from a lender to demonstrate to the seller that your intentions to

purchase are serious. If you currently are not ‘mortgage ready,’ obtaining a pre-approval will be difficult. You will need to clean up whatever issues that are preventing you from being approved. However, if you can find a seller willing to enter into this type of agreement, it is mandatory that you protect yourself.

(4) Have your attorney review the terms and conditions of sales contract and lease agreement before signing them. This can save you from wasting time and money.

A Great Day in Harlem by William A. Rogers

O

n Sunday, July 30, the 43st annual HARLEM WEEK celebration will begin with “A Great Day in Harlem,” a free outdoor festival and concert at U.S. Grant National Memorial Park, 122nd Street and Riverside Drive. As a co-founder of HARLEM WEEK, I find it hard to believe that 43 years have passed in what seems like a blink of an eye. As the current president of the Harlem Tourism Board I see HARLEM WEEK spin-offs like the Harlem Music Festival as a great economic development tool for the most famous urban community in the world.

Harlem Day is always the third Sunday in August and takes place on Sunday August 20 this year.

A lot has changed in Harlem over the last 43 years.

From a historic point of view, the current Harlem Renaissance we are now experiencing started on the first HARLEM DAY in 1974. The title of that first HARLEM DAY was “The Beginning of the Second Harlem Renaissance”.

This year’s A Great Day festival will start at noon with the opening of a special youth tech pavilion in Sakura Park across the street from Grant’s tomb.

STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) programs will be featured throughout this year’s Harlem Week Celebration. Music and entertainment will start at 1:00 pm and end at 8:30pm.

Gospel music with Vy Higginsen’s Gospel for

teens, the McDonald’s Gospel Super Choir and other local and nationally known gospel groups will perform. Another major attraction for that day will be the world famous HARLEM WEEK Great Day fashion show, where designers and models of color from around the corner and around the world bring their designs and talent to the fashion walkway of the Great Day stage.

The Harlem Music Festival will present a musical segment scheduled to start around 6:30pm with a HMF all-star musical Tribute to Patti Labelle and Bill Withers. There will also be performances by Ledisi, The Force MDs and D-Train Williams. American Idol and BET Awards musical director and long-

time musical director for HARLEM WEEK Ray Chew will close the concert with his all-star band and other surprise artists.

Exhibitors will be across the street in Sakura Park on both sides of Riverside Drive and on

the Grant Memorial Park Plaza. Great food, unique arts and craft and our Ki Energy Center Stress management treatment exhibit will be among the many reasons to come out on Sunday, August 20 to celebrate a truly Great Day in

Harlem.

hole Foods Market Harlem opened on Friday July 21 at West 125th Street. According to metro marketng team leader, Lucia Albero, it was the largest opening ever! The line of people waiting for the doors to open Friday morning reminded me of the blocklong lines for James Brown and Sly Stone concerts at the Apollo.

The tremendous community response was greater than expected for the rapidly growing grocery chain known for its high standards of providing fresh produce free from artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives as well as hydrogenated fats and high-fructose corn syrup.

The 40,000 square-foot store features innovative, new chef-driven concepts and classic favorites making it a dining destination for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Keeping in step with HARLEM WEEK’s Harlem/Havana focus, Whole Foods Market Harlem features a new Cuban sandwich venue that serves classic and unique new takes of the hot, freshly-pressed Cu-

ban sandwich. There will also be a Cuban coffee stand with window service serving breakfast sandwiches made with Cuban bread along with a variety of traditional Cuban coffee drinks.

The traditional Whole Foods Market favorites like square pan pizza, fresh sushi, salad bars and hot bars are available. There are close to 20 local Harlem brands offered, including Vy Higginsen’s Mama’s One Sauce, Harlem Pie Man’s six-inch pies, Ginjan’s traditional African beverages, products by Sylvia’s and Egunsi Foods.

Whole Foods Market is creating community partnerships with local community-based organizations like Harlem

Park to Park, who created a local vendors program.

Five percent of opening day total sales will benefit Harlem Grown’s Saturday enrichment program. Whole Foods Market will also participate in the Harlem Tourism Board’s Holiday Windows program.

Christina Minardi, Northeast President for Whole Foods Market stated that 140 of the 250 people employed at the Harlem location are Harlem residents. Damon Young, store team leader for Whole Foods Market Harlem store is thrilled to serve the community that he has fond childhood memories of.

Coming Spring 2018 Disney will bring “Frozen” the musical to the St. James Theatre and it will star Jelani Alladin in his Broadway debut as Kristoff.

7 Techniques For Keeping Your ‘Thought Life’ Healthy And Your Stress Level Low

Relationship problems, child-rearing issues, job woes and a lack of money are just some of life’s complications that can weigh people down – and cause health problems.

“It’s difficult to stay healthy and energized when stress is a daily reality,” says Dr. Greg Wells (www. drgregwells.com), author of The Ripple Effect: Eat, Sleep, Move and Think Better.

“Chronic stress can damage your body, threaten your mental health, put a strain on relationships, and take the joy out of life.”

But there’s no reason to surrender to stress,

Wells says. He suggests seven techniques that can help you have a healthier “thought life” and recover from chronic stress: • Move your body.

Rhythmic, repeated motion is particularly soothing to the mind and body. A long walk, cycling, swimming, or running will all work, but any kind of movement relieves tension, improves circulation, and clears your mind.

• Get into nature. Head to the garden, the park, or the woods to lower your blood pressure, strengthen your immune system, reduce tension and depression, and boost your mood.

“It’s stunning how good it is for your health to be in nature,” Wells says. “And

I recommend you leave the cell phone and earbuds at home.”

• Practice yoga or Tai Chi. Therapy, yoga and Tai Chi are good ways to decrease stress and anxiety, increase energy, and boost the immune system. They also give you more stamina—needed in stressful times—and improve the quality of your sleep.

• Have perspective.

Don’t be so quick to conclude that you “can’t handle” a stressful situation.

“This is truly a mind-overmatter opportunity,” Wells says. “Believing that you are strong and resourceful actually makes you stronger and more resourceful.”

Don’t give in to negative self-talk about not having

• Change the nature of your response. Research indicates that taking an active, problem-solving approach to life’s challenges relieves stress and can transform it into something positive. If you withdraw, deny the problem, or spend all your time venting, you’ll feel helpless. Instead, Well says, be determined to make a change, put effort into it, and plan for better results.

• Practice slow, deep breathing. Start applying the power of deep breathing each day. It will make a huge difference. Wells recommends you start small by taking three deep breaths each time you sit down at

your desk—in the morning, after breaks, after lunch, and so on. It will help you become more patient, calm, and relaxed.

• Block time for single-tasking. Each day, schedule time in your calendar for focusing exclusively on one task. This task should be something that is important to you.

“People love to talk about multi-tasking, but while doing several things at once might make it seem as if you are working hard, it’s an illusion,” Wells says. Your body and mind are not designed to work that way and it causes extra stress.

“Ultimately, it’s important to remember that your thoughts have a strong in-

fluence over stress levels,” Wells says. “What you choose to think about, or not think about, dictates how your body and mind react to everyday life.”

While there, I met his sister. He loves his sister and they have a really close relationship. Here’s the issue: after we met and he walked away, she was really mean to me and implied that I was not her brother’s type of woman

Known around the world for his work in the ministry especially in Africa, Rev. Harrison was one of Harlem’s best. The Pastor of the historic Baptist House of Prayer, on West 126th Street and Malcolm X Blvd., in Harlem, was an iconic figure in the minister’s circle.

He was an excellent musician and

singer. His theatrical attributes are astounding – but they do not surpass his ministry. He will be missed, but we can rejoice in knowing that he has reached that Holy city where his friends and loved ones will be waiting. Thank you for being a consistent friend to me throughout the past 40 years!

our life is entirely wrapped up in your job.

You never aimed for that to happen, but it’s okay: what you do for a living has become your passion and therefore, you do it well. Life and work balance for you, but in the new book “Called to Rise” by David O. Brown (with Michelle Burford), you’ll see the balance tip.

Little David Brown never wanted to be a police officer.

Not at first. He really wanted to become a lawyer like on Perry Mason. Working in a courtroom, putting criminals away seemed like the best job ever and so, after Brown graduated from high school, he headed for the University of Texas at Austin to reach his dream.

At the end of his sophomore year, though, that dream

changed when crack cocaine came to his hometown of Dallas.

He’d never seen such destruction, so he quit college in favor of a different method of putting “villains” away: Brown became a cop.

It was a comfortable job that came easy for him. His rookie year was spent “enforcing the law in a place where I knew, or at least knew of, just about everybody.” He made friends on the force, and started working his way up the internal ladder.

Meanwhile, over those years, he got divorced, lost his best friend to violence and his father to illness, raised a son, learned to lean on God for help, and met the love of his life.

The job, of course, was another love. Always yearning for more responsibility and better job positions, Brown

leaped from department to department, worked a regular beat, was in charge of 9-1-1 and dispatch, and served with the Dallas SWAT team. He learned first-hand that community policing worked like no other method of crime-fighting. He reached for the top.

And then, just after he became one of the nation’s few African American Chiefs of Police, Brown was handed his biggest challenge ever…

Aside from the fact that this book is overloaded to distraction with clichés and a bit too much chest-thumping, “Called to Rise” ain’t too bad.

Readers who love true crime or memoirs of that sort will enjoy that author David O. Brown writes (with Michelle Burford) about his passion for law enforcement, how

he formed his hard anti-drug

stance while just a youth,

and how it shaped the way he works. And yet, you’re asked to swallow a lot in those pages, and it sometimes feels like the righteousness is forced.

Later, that tone softens when Brown admits that his son’s death changed the way he perceived the people he was sworn to protect. He’s introspective there, with less foot-stomping, as he also weighs in on racial issues, and how police and citizens can come together for a “more thoughtful” discussion on that subject.

Overall, “Called to Rise” is mostly good. It has moments of eye-rolling, but it’s also quite inspiring and yes, it’s worth reading. If you love police / detective memoirs, it’s a book to get wrapped up in.

Columbia Celebrates Harlem Week

A new place in Harlem for art, science, learning and community

The first buildings of Columbia’s Manhattanville campus are now open, providing New York with a new center for pioneering research, artistic creativity and community engagement. With a sustainable design of tree-lined sidewalks, open green spaces and public services that will continue to unfold in the years to come, Columbia Manhattanville is a city campus built to welcome people and ideas.

The Lenfest Center for the Arts houses new film and theater spaces at Columbia’s School of the Arts and the Wallach Art Gallery. Come to the Wallach’s summer exhibition “Uptown” featuring Harlem artists, open through Aug. 20.

The Jerome L. Greene Science Center is home to the Nobel Prize–winning brain scientists of the Zuckerman Institute. Learn about their cutting-edge research in the public main floor that includes a community Education Lab and Wellness Center.
