New Correction Officers’ Union Head Outlines Vision For NYC’s Boldest

“It’s tough,” Husamudeen said, “but it’s rewarding. It’s like a box of crackerjacks. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

Husamudeen got involved in the union after his underground newsletter, “Union Watch” about differences between the union and management, caught Seabrook’s attention. Seabrook eventually convinced Husamudeen to join a slate of officers who were running in the union’s election. In 1995, they won all of the seats on the board.

He served as treasurer of COBA for 15 years before being elected vice president, a position he served in for five years. And in 2016, following Seabrook’s ouster, he became head of the union.

Husamudeen said he’s proud of the work that he, Seabrook and the executive board did for the correction officers over the years, like advocating for the passing of laws that barred the city from privatizing correction officers’ jobs, creating a widows and children fund for the families of officers who die in the line

of duty and ensuring that officers on disability can retire on 75 percent of their pensions.

But he said more needed to be done. He wants increased

benefits for the officers.

He said the jails’ crumbling infrastructure needs to be shored up.

He wants a correction

officers’ academy - similar to the police academy - as well as improvements to officers’ medical benefits. The union head said he also wants “meaningful reform.”

He also wants to create a safer work environment for the officers, after some 1,300 corrections officers suffered assaults from inmates since 2015.

Husamudeen continued, “jail

violence - like stabbings and slashings - are up 18 percent inside the jails,” “We are still fighting to improve the working conditions,”

Husamudeen said. “People think that we’re against reform.

W e ’ r e against reform that

is one sided. And we’re against the mayor picking people who have no experience running city jails.”

Husamudeen said if nothing else, he wants people to know

that correction officers are your friends, family and neighbors, and they do a tough job under even tougher circumstances.

“Correction officers are your sisters, brothers, mothers fathers, sons and daughters,” he said.

“They are part of the fabric of our communities. We live here, we shop here. More than 65 percent of us live in the five boroughs.

We are public safety officers. We are the police of the jail. We do everything in our power to keep the public safe.”

He added: “We make it our business that inmates come back into the community better than when they left it. We have an attitude that it doesn’t matter what side of the bar that you’re on, everyone deserves to be safe.”

he new leader of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association Inc. said he has big plans to advocate for and support New York’s Boldest.

Elias Husamudeen was elected the union leader for COBA the second largest law enforcement union in New York City - last June after his predecessor, Norman Seabrook, was indicted for wire fraud.

Although Husamudeen took the reins at a tough time in the union’s history, the married father of three, and one of the few African-American and Muslim leaders in law enforcement, prefers to look forward, taking on the union’s push back against City Hall over its ban of punitive segregation, dealing with the fallout of the Lippman Report (which urges Rikers Island’s closure) and healing the “turmoil that existed within the union,” he said.

“Being a fighter,” he said, “I wasn’t walking away.”

Husamudeen sat down with The Harlem News last week to discuss his first year in office, his vision for the union and changing the narrative of a “culture of violence” inside the city’s jail system.

The Harlem native began working in corrections 30 years ago, patrolling the Anna M. Kross Center at Rikers Island and serving inside both the punitive and administrative segregation divisions. He said he saw some ugly scenes: he sprang into action in the early 90s when a group of Muslim prisoners rioted, stabbing other inmates and pummeling officers. And he said he witnessed an inmate slash his wife across the face during a visit, because he believed the woman was see-

Gardens in both East and West Harlem & Washington Heights will take part in the EXPO. A “Kick-off” is scheduled for Saturday, August 12th 1-4 pm with Caribbean art & music, at the William H. Harris Garden, 153rd & St. Nicholas Ave. The final event will be a jazz concert with Marcus Steele & Friends at 5:30 PM in the Clayton Williams Community Garden, 126th & Frederick Douglass Blvd.

There will also be walking/ bike tours of the gardens on both Saturday, August 12, and Saturday, August 19th.

BLACK FAMILIES BELIEVE RACIAL INEQUALITY GROWING IN U.S. SCHOOLS

lack families overwhelmingly believe that their schools are underfunded, and that racial inequality is growing, according to a poll conducted by The Leadership Conference Education Fund and the Anzalone Liszt Grove Research firm.

The Leadership Conference Education Fund, which is the education and research arm of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, developed the poll to “explore how Black and Latino parents and families view the American education system’s success in educating their children,” according to a press release about the survey.

The poll revealed that 90 percent of Black parents and families believe schools in Black communities are underfunded compared to White communities.

The poll also showed that almost 75 percent of Black parents and families believe that the education Black students receive is worse than what White students.

A report about the poll said that, “Among Black parents and family members whose child’s teachers are mostly White, only 42 percent believe that schools are trying their best to educate Black students, 16 points below the share of those whose children have mostly Black teach-

ers.”

Liz King, the senior policy analyst and the director of education policy for The Leadership Conference Education Fund, said that there has been a lot of research that’s come out lately that suggests an implicit bias that educators, who are mostly White, have towards Black and Latino children.

The press release about the poll said that the findings come at a critically important time for public education in the United States as states are currently developing education plans as part of their obligations under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

“These plans are states’ opportunities to make a clear declaration about their belief in the education of all children and a commitment to ensuring children get the education they deserve,” the press release said.

Republicans in the United States Congress continue to chip away at ESSA, making it harder for states to clearly define those commitments.

In March, Republicans voted to rollback accountability measures established by the Obama Administration, Education Week reported.

“The Obama-era accountability rules, finalized late last year, set ground rules for how schools must be rated for school-improvement purposes,

specified the requirements of (and flexibility for) states dealing with high testing opt-out rates in individual schools, and outlined how states would have to handle the ‘school quality’ indicator in accountability systems,” according to the Education Week blog post.

Opponents of the Republican-led rules change said, “that the move was unnecessary, would create confusion in states about whether and to what extent their ESSA accountability plans comply with the law, and could endanger crucial protections for disadvantaged students.”

In the report, researchers with the Leadership Conference Education Fund said that the findings of the “New Education Majority” poll, should be a clarion call for advocates and policymakers who must come to terms with the fact that a successful education policy must be responsive to the needs of Black, Latino and Asian children, who make up a majority of public school students in America.

Researchers recommended opening the decision-making processes around educational policies to Black and Latino families, especially decisions regarding priorities and funding; integrating implicit bias and cultural responsiveness training into teacher preparation and professional development; preparing, hiring, supporting

and retaining strong Black and Latino teachers; designing accountability systems that focus on high academic achievement, especially for Black and Latino children; and supporting and improving any school where Black or Latino children are not being effectively educated.

Given the context of ESSA implementation, King said that the federal government, states, school districts and schools have a great opportunity to put policies into place that are responsive to the needs and values of the new majority of public school children.

“We need to ensure that every single school is organized around excellence for every single child,” said King.

“Parents in this poll spoke to the value of a state’s rating of a school’s success in educating children well, a central piece of ESSA’s accountability requirements, as well as the need to ensure that educators have the [resources] and preparation to support every child’s success and overcome historic barriers to opportunity.”

Be Prepared to Buy Now

hy is a home inspection needed for buying newly constructed property? This is a question asked by many first-time prospective home buyers. Here are several reasons why a home inspection is important: (1) – To protect your investment. Buying a home is probably the biggest investment you will make. It is important to protect your investment by having a professional inspect the unit. This is not an area to cut corners. Spend the money, it is a small amount in comparison to the cost of the unit. Use a certified experience licensed inspector and accompany him through the process. Take notes, ask questions, and take pictures

of all the rooms. Get referrals from family and friends who recently purchased or your housing counselor before selecting an inspector.

(2) – To insure the work is done correctly. Unfortunately, new construction does not always mean good construction.

Sometimes the need to complete the work takes precedence over doing the job well.

I have heard many horror stories from first-time home buyers who failed to get a home inspection only later to complain about several problems with their unit. These issues could have been resolved through an inspection. It is critical not to sign a contract or at the very least have an inspection contingency clause in the contract just in case the

unit does not pass inspection.

(3) – It is a requirement if you are applying for the HPD Home First Grant program. If you are eligible for the grant, a home inspection is mandatory.

The unit must pass the inspection. Buying a home is a tough process, but you will have more confidence in making the purchase knowing another set of eyes looked at the property.

The first step is to attend HCCI’s Home Buyer Education Workshop. We will assist you in becoming familiar with this entire process from start to finish. he Honorable Inez E. Dickens works tirelessly serving the Harlem community as well as causes near and dear to her conscious. She gives of her time, talents and her discretionary funds to countless organizations.

Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens also throws fabulous celebrations; she works hard and she plays hard too.

On Thursday, July 13th, 2017 Dickens For New York hosted a birthday yacht cruise to celebrate the life of this phenomenal woman.

Her political mentors and allies from the past, present and other well-wishers made their way out on a rainy evening to show their love. Mayor David N. Dickens, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday was one of the first people I recognized after I boarded the yacht. Congressman Charles

B. Rangel was front and center to celebrate as well. Former State Assemblyman Keith Wright stopped by to wish her well. Recently elected State Senator Brian Benjamin was on board and spoke of the alliance that he and Inez have already formed to write legislation to represent our Harlem community.

Attendance was so good that tickets were sold out; late comers couldn’t get on board. Community leaders of Harlem organizations and businesses came out to celebrate her birthday; Lloyd A. Williams, CEO of Greater Harlem of Commerce and his lovely wife; Voza Rivers, Executive Producer of the New Heritage Theater Group; Hazel N. Dukes, President of the NYS chapter of the NAACP; Geoffrey Eaton, President of the Mid-Manhattan NAACP chapter; Michael J. Garner, President of 100 Black Men,

Inc.; Donald C. Notice, Executive Director of West Harlem Group Assistance, Inc.; Adrian A. Council, Sr., Publisher of The Positive Community; Eugenia C. Foxworth, Foxworth Realty; Bedelia Woods, Sylvia’s Restaurant; and Aliyyah Baylor from Make My Cake were just a few of those in attendance.

At first, I was wondering if Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens would be on board the cruise since she is presently in a rehab center for a recent fall she had. Warriors like her may fall-down, but they don’t stay down. She was a vision of loveliness when she made her entrance. Her hair, her make-up and her attire was perfect; her smile showed she was ready to receive the love and well wishes.

wo comic book professionals examine if one of the biggest projected summer blockbusters lives up to its hype.

L.A. Williams (LAW): I avoid most “summer blockbusters” for the same reasons I avoid most gossip: if I can’t learn anything beneficial from the story, or I don’t get a hearty laugh from it, or if I’m not personally invested in the main character, then why bother?

But I feel personally invested in the main character of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” because he’s been my buddy since childhood.

Spider-Man’s real super power has always been his relatability. Batman was “the Dark Knight;” Peter Parker’s called “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.” Despite his nom de guerre of Spider-MAN, Peter was a maturing kid like I was. He’s so down, he even has nicknames (“Spidey,” ”Pete,” “Web-

head”) like a BFF should!

So I saw his blockbuster flick.

Should you?

Andrew Lis (Lis): I loved the first Sam Raimi-directed “Spider-Man” film, starring Tobey Maguire, in 2002.

Respectful to the source material, it belongs in a place similar to the classic Christopher Reeve “Superman” or even Tim Burton’s first “Batman”: timeless treatments of iconic characters.

But in all three cases, the bloom faded from the rose as each subsequent release would follow a similar formula of too many villains, too much destruction, and not enough meaning. The title characters became stale cutouts in their own films.

LAW: Decades ago, Marvel Comics made deals to let various studios produce and control films featuring Marvel

characters. Fox hit with the X-Men films and Sony with Spider-Man’s. Eventually, Marvel created their own studio, which hit with “Avengers”, “Iron Man”, (etc.) but their “Marvel Universe” movies couldn’t feature (or reference) their characters that were still under contract with the other studios, until recently.

Lis: “Spider-Man Homecoming” is the first time that Marvel Studios managed Spider-Man starring in a full-length feature.

LAW: Now that Spider-Man’s come home to Marvel Studios, they’ve started anew, ignoring all previous (Sony) “Spider-Man” movies. They presume most people seeing “Homecoming” have seen various “Avengers” and/or “Iron Man” films featuring billionaire inventor and super-hero Tony Stark and his supporting cast. And they make a variety of other tweaks from

the source comics, like the races of some characters and a few other twists.

Comic purists will bemoan them, but there are always changes made with any adaptation and the changes in “Homecoming” enable a character and supporting cast from comics created in 1962 to work in a 2017 film.

Lis: They changed Peter’s Aunt May from an infirmed, one-note character to … Marisa Tomei (!) and made Stark a mentor for Peter. Spider-Man, now played by Tom Holland, is a teenaged newbie again and an annoying wiseguy who never shuts up, is hyperactive, and enjoys being a super-hero because… well, wouldn’t you enjoy it when the alternative is just being a broke, down on your luck science nerd?

LAW: His problems also make Spider-Man relatable. Clark Kent pretended to be a nerd; Peter is one. Nobody’s perfect, so Spidey’s blunders in “Homecoming” are relatable. And we’ve all had to sacrifice a preference for a priority, so you’ll relate to the instances when Peter must do the same in “Homecoming.”

Lis: The origin of this film’s villain – Michael Keaton’s Vulture – is rooted in the “Avengers” storyline. Keaton was fantastic in “Birdman” and in “ Homecoming,” he revisits the theme that won him Best Oscar in 2015: he hates super-heroes! Here, Keaton builds a super-suit out of salvaged parts from past Avengers battles, using the rich palette of the Marvel Universe to provide color to their version of New York.

SUPER HEROES

LAW: Hundreds of other films have fight scenes in NYC; “Homecoming” is different because in this film, the city should receive a best supporting actor nom. There are overt kisses to the Apple, and lots of subtle touches that only those intimately familiar with NYC would have added or noticed.

Lis: My fear was that integrating Peter into the Marvel Universe, with Tony Stark and a villain dependent upon the Avengers, might leave Spidey little more than a side character in his own film, a problem that plagues every super-hero movie franchise. Mock spoiler: that proved unfounded!

LAW: I shared the concern and still have it for future films. But in this one, the focus is on the new (or renewed) Peter, a teenager trying to figure out what to do in his

school and in the world.

“Homecoming” provides a satisfying blend of humor, sweetness, dilemmas, depth, and surprises.

And did you notice we never mentioned Spidey’s abilities? One could suppose we didn’t because most people already know he “does whatever a spider can.” But we feel the connection to the main character is the key; otherwise, all the powers, fight scenes, and special effects are just an expensive waste of time on a beautiful summer day or evening.

Adjust Summer Diet To Meet Your Body’s Needs

warm. As we move into warm weather months, the body has transitioned to microbes that facilitate fat burning, weight loss and renewed energy. In the summer go for lighter fare such as fruits, leafy greens, beans and cucumbers.

• Hot, spicy foods don’t mix with summer.

If you like spicy foods better get them on the table during the spring when the body is transitioning from the winter. Once

summer rolls around it’s best to avoid hot and spicy foods; which include coffee, red meat and eggs – all of which can put undue stress on organs such as the prostate, liver, stomach and small intestines.

• Eat the chicken, not the egg. While eggs are considered a warm food that should be avoided during summer months, chicken is considered a cool food. A 2016 study found that men who ate chicken four times a week had a 17 percent less chance of getting prostate cancer, compared to men who ate poultry less than twice a month.

• Drink water before meals. Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your body, especially during the summer. Water is the best way to stay hydrated, but it’s best to drink water 15-30 minutes before a meal. Drinking it during a meal will drown out stomach acid, which breaks down hard to digest proteins.

“If you are curious about the food you should be eating, go ahead and give it a little taste,” says Douillard. “If it has two of the three summer tastes – sweet, bitter or astringent – it is balancing and should be prepared in a way that is cool, heavy or oily.”

Ten minutes into this comedy, you’re asking yourself, “Who the hell wrote this?”

The story is contemporary, the dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny, the characters are distinct and their life dramas, rivalries and relationship problems are thoroughly engaging for 122 minutes.

Blame the naughty humor on Kenya Barris (TV’s “Blackish”) and Tracy Oliver (“Barbershop”). They completely understand the lurid minds of ladies who’ve had one-toomany cocktails and speak their mind. And for audience members who do not have a potty mouth, but wish they did, this crew says every wicked thing you ever thought, but never had the nerve to say.

Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall, “When the Bough Breaks”) is a successful and envied author, somewhat like an Oprah without a TV show. She’s married to ex-NFL player Stewart (Mike Colter, “Luke Cage”).

On the surface, they have an ideal marriage and are on the verge of getting their own talk show. Behind closed doors, they’ve got problems. However, they must protect their brand and are determined to keep up their facade.

Ryan talks her old college girlfriends, who used to call themselves the “Flossy Posse,” into a reunion in New

Orleans at the annual Essence Music Festival. There’s Dina (Tiffany Haddish, “The Carmichael Show”), the brassy one who talks like a drunk hooker, “We gonna get some d—k this weekend.” Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), a nurse with two kids, is the prudish one: “Dina!

The foursome gathers at the airport, checks into a lavish hotel and in short order they are kicked out thanks to Dina’s outlandish behavior. Apparently the finer establishments don’t take kindly to women who threaten patrons with broken champagne bottles.

The group moves to a fleabag motel that’s frequented by $5 prostitutes.

That’s the set up, and director Malcolm Lee (“The Best Man”), who has become the populist voice for the Black middle-class, works his magic. Scenes melt into each other with a quick rhythm, and each has its own dynamic, builds to a crescendo and leaves plenty of room for the cast to engage in comical banter. He gives the actresses room to play their characters to the max. Bedroom scenes, dance-offs, bar fights, Beale Street parades, testy confrontations, shocking revelations and raunchy repartee are orchestrated with precision. You barely have time to breathe between the outrageous scenes (editor Paul Millspaugh, “The Best Man Holiday”).

The cast works well together as an ensemble. Pinkett Smith finds the humor in her dour character, who is in desperate need of a wild night out. When she hooks up with a lanky 21-year-old (Kofi Siriboe, “Queen Sugar”), she gets

“Sin of a Woman”

othing’s set in stone.

Few things are.

Lucky for you, there’s usually a chance to change your mind or have a do-over. You can often get another go at something because few things are that firmly decided. As in the new book “Sin of a Woman” by Kimberla Lawson Roby, you can sometimes have a second chance.

More and more every day, Porsha Harrington got on Pastor Raven Jones Black’s last nerve.

But Raven absolutely had to put up with Porsha, which was part of the problem: Porsha, inheritor of her father’s estate and mistress of Raven’s then-husband-now-ex, had given Raven $250,000 to start New Vision Christian Center . The partnership would make them both rich; Raven would be the church leader, Porsha would be the assistant

pastor, they’d both get paid from member contributions and tithes.

That is, as long as Raven could tolerate being near Porsha.

Which wasn’t long.

Years ago, Raven spent time in prison for embezzlement from the church belonging to her ex-father-in-law, Rev. Curtis Black. She’d also stolen some money from a loan shark, and she’d told huge lies all the way to the bank. But that was all coming around to bite her now, and she needed another scheme to get everyone off her back. If she could start with Porsha and make money doing it, well, all’s the better.

So Raven just cooked up another lie.

Something was missing from Porsha Harrington’s life.

She was single, for one. More than anything, Porsha wanted to

be married with a family, a desire that was so strong, it shocked her.

Something else shocked her, too: she realized, in prayerful moments, that the men she’d mostly chosen were married ones, and God just couldn’t be happy about that at all. Instead, He seemed to be leading her to become more active at New Vision, and that made her heart glad. So did Dillon, the man she’d cheated with once, who’d now turned over a new leaf himself.

God would point Porsha into the direction she needed to be.

He had plans for her.

Too bad Raven did, too.

Oh, yes. Now there you go: a novel with scandal, back-stabbing, nastiness, prayer, gutter behavior, responsibility, and pure entertainment. That’s “Sin of a Woman.”

And yet, just because author

No, readers will be surprised to see that, while this story is sexy and wonderfully outrageous, it’s also rather tame; Roby veers away when the bedroom door closes, so there’s nothing offensive here. The story is spicy, but it won’t burn your eyes; one character even turns virtuous, which should tell you plenty.
