Smart Staples With smart staples on hand it’s easy to get the party started. Olives for example, are the centerpiece of the Mediterranean diet.

Combined with fresh flavors of seasonal produce, such as asparagus, tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers, they can brighten any platter with a rich and satisfying burst of flavor.

They are also a natural with any cheese, added to pasta, or served alongside hummus, rustic style breads and

One, Two, Three Skewers Try this tasty idea: Start with toothpicks to create single-serve skewers that guests can easily tote as they mingle.

Choose three or four different kinds of olives, small cheese squares and slices of ready-to-eat meats. For example, begin with a Pearls Specialties Kalamata or Garlic Stuffed olive. Next add a slice of your favorite cheese cut into small squares. Then combine with a slice of salami, smoked ham or sautéed rings of flavorful sausage. Simple Snackers For an impressive plate of appetizers, top large whole grain crackers with a dollop of hummus and cross-cut slices of Kalamata olives. To add color, flavor, and texture, try a beet or basil pesto hummus. Combine colors and flavors by adding thin cucumber slices, crumbled, marinated feta cheese, or a tangy ready-made mango salsa. Serve immediately to keep the crackers crisp.

These will disappear quickly and are very visually appealing.

Homemade Olive Bar Choose an array of four or five different kinds of olives to feature on a large platter. For a variety of choices, check out Pearls Specialties Olives at local grocery stores, Target

and Walmart, which offers Kalamata, Greek Queens stuffed with either garlic or jalapeno, a mixed Greek medley, and classic California Black Ripe olives.

Pick up fresh cherry or grape tomatoes, a package of frozen tortellini with pesto sauce, and some bite size “bocconcini,” which are small mozzarella balls in olive either marinated with herbs and olive oil, or plain.

Combine these items on one large platter in different sections and provide small snack plates and party picks for guests.

Jazzmobile’s Season Begins at Marcus Garvey Park

ycliffe Gordon and Friends kicked off Jazzmobile’s Summerfest 2017 season in Marcus Garvey Park on Friday, July 7 from 7pm to 8:15pm.

The band consisted of Wycliffe Gordon on trombone and vocals, Chris Pattishall on piano, Eric on bass, and Alvin Atkinson, Jr. on drums and vocals.

It poured rain most of mid-morning and early afternoon, however, Jazzmobile sent out a late email around 3:30pm to let people know the clouds were clearing up and that the show would go on. The message even recommended you bring some plastic to cover the seat in case it was still wet. That wasn’t necessary; the warmth of the day dried the seats up just fine. I arrived just as the mistress of ceremony was taking the microphone on the stage.

Robin Bell Stevens, the CEO of Jazzmobile, Inc. opened the evening by informing the audience that Wycliffe had turned 50 years old in May and the audience sang happy birthday to him before the band began playing. For the next 75 minutes the band played jazz and blues tunes.

Wycliffe and Alvin sang some vocals on several songs while the audience chanted back and forth with Wycliffe.

The swing dancers started getting out of their seats and were busting some serious moves in the front of the stage while the rest of us clapped our hands, stomped our feet and swayed our hips from side to side in our seats to the music.

I was seated next to one of the dancers, an elderly gentleman in a suit and hat that walked out on the floor with a limp. Once he grabbed the lady’s hand who had agreed to dance with him, the limp

disappeared as he guided her along with their dance routine. Life is funny that way; he wasn’t limping any longer and he danced for the rest of the concert.

Jazzmobile Summerfest has more Friday evening dates this summer in Marcus Garvey Park: August 4 featuring Jeremy Pitt, August 11 featuring Craig Harris and August 18 featuring Solomon Hicks. If you are a fan of jazz, come on out and support. If you’ve never had the pleasure of attending a jazz concert before then you really need to come out to expand on the music genres you have listened to.

My oldest brother Chucky took me to my first Jazzmobile concert the summer before I went away to college. I didn’t realize he liked jazz because the only albums he had me buy for him were soul and R & B music. He wanted to expand my musical horizons to include other genres that people of color contributed to American music. I’m so glad he educated me musically to include jazz, which I studied throughout my college years.

The all day festival starts at 11:00am and 5:00pm.

THROW THE DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY WIDE OPEN FOR OUR YOUTH “Today’s American Dream Act” Offers Path to Good Jobs, Education and Homeownership

By Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) hese are dark times in Washington. It’s no secret that President Trump and his team are working overtime to turn back the clock on our rights and divest from our communities.

If you want to know where the President stands on the welfare of the African American community, look no further than his immoral budget. It eliminates programs that feed hungry kids, support veterans and help families buy their own home.

Republicans are slamming the doors of opportunity for our youth. For people of color, those doors appear to be barricaded, chained and padlocked.

We must resist. We must reverse their damage and prevent them from doing it again. Let’s push forward and throw wide the doors of opportunity for all.

President Barack Obama led our recovery from the worst economic recession since the Great Depression. Together, we saved our economy and created more than 14 million jobs, more than ten times the number created under the previous President George W. Bush.

But today, we are seeing that

jobs are being lost; wages aren’t keeping up and bills are piling up. Tragically, my Republican colleagues’ solution is more tax credits for the super-rich.

My solution is different. It’s called the “Today’s American Dream Act” and will empower families with the security of a good job, a good education, home ownership and access to healthcare.

I introduced this comprehensive, 25-section bill so our young people can live the American Dream by training them for good jobs, creating more good jobs and innovating the future.

Business leaders, especially in the technology and advanced manufacturing sectors, regularly tell me that they have thousands of open jobs, but don’t have the qualified candidates.

For example, Manufacturing Renaissance Chicago reports that there are 15,000 unfilled advanced manufacturing jobs in Chicagoland; these jobs pay an average annual salary of $70,000.

My bill would help people get the training they need for good-paying jobs by investing in apprenticeships, training and re-training programs and expanded student aid for career and technical education.

Additionally, my “Community College to Career Fund Act” would partner businesses

with our remarkable community colleges to develop curriculums that turn students into career-ready graduates.

If we used these programs to fill just 10 percent of Chicagoland’s open manufacturing jobs, we’d add $105 million in wages to our communities each and every year.

Filling open jobs with properly trained workers is a strong first step. We also need to create more jobs by investing in small businesses, funding local incubators and rewarding companies for expanding into new markets.

I can tell you that our young people are ready and eager to get to work. In April, I hosted my fourth annual Youth Jobs Fair. More than 300 young people came, resume in hand, looking for a job. Let’s create jobs for them so they build the American Dream for themselves and their families.

We also need to invest in tomorrow, by investing in the science-technology-engineering-mathematic (STEM) fields.

Right now, STEM jobs are driving our economy and continue to grow. According to the Level Playing Field Institute, there will be 1.4 million new tech jobs by 2020 but 70 percent will be unfilled.

of all high schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) computer science classes. Many of these schools aren’t in African American communities. In fact, just 13 percent of students who took the AP computer science test were African American or Latino.

It’s time to invest in STEM teachers so our young people—Black, White, Latino, Asian American or Native American—can innovate the future! The “Today’s American Dream Act” would provide aid to STEM teachers who are dedicated to educating the next generation of Mark Zuckerbergs.

Taken together, the “Today’s American Dream Act” will train our young people for the opportunities of today and prepare them for the possibilities of tomorrow. It’s time to pass the “Today’s American Dream Act” and throw wide the doors of opportunity.

redit history plays a significant role in your ability to obtain a mortgage. For most mortgage products, lenders usually want to see 24 months clean credit history with three to four active accounts. You will be denied a pre-approval with outstanding delinquent credit issues on your report.

Here are some strategies you can employ to remove delinquent debt.

(1) Contact the creditor and arrange a payment schedule. Depending on the size and nature of the debt, this strategy can be helpful by getting the derogatory information removed from the public record to an active account status. In changing the status of your account, a lender will be more inclined to provide

a pre-approval.

(2) Negotiate a settlement payment. Creditors will sometimes accept less money than the total amount owed if you agree to send a lump sum payment. You can eliminate a large portion of the debt by employing this strategy while saving up to 40 or 50% of the outstanding balance and cleaning up your credit history in the process.

(3) Make sure you get in writing from your creditor that the debt has been satisfactorily paid.

This is important to the process because the payment will not be reflected immediately on your credit report. This letter will be proof the debt has been resolved.

Check with the three reporting bureaus, Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union to ensure they are reflecting accurate information

on your report.

(4) Constantly monitor your credit report. Delinquent credit information that has been corrected can appear again on your individual report. Each year you are entitled to a free report from the credit reporting bureaus. Go to www. Annualfreecreditreport. com. It is in your best interest to review your report to insure its accuracy.

Ultimately, any delinquent credit information will prohibit you receiving a pre-approval and subsequently, a mortgage. Maintain a strong credit history as you prepare for homeownership.

With the Jackson firing, several questions remain, with the primary question being the timing of the move. Jackson, of course, made the selection for the franchise six days earlier for the 2017 NBA Draft. Though Frank Ntilkina appears to be a rookie with a lot of potential, he only averaged a little over five points in 18 minutes a game in a foreign league that is far inferior to the NBA. Shortly after he was drafted, Ntilkina discussed the Triangle Offense. “I know that this is the system that brings him a lot of champion-

ships, definitely.” He continued to discuss the triangle. “The system that I played back in France with my team is quite similar with it, and we talked about it together, and I think I can definitely fit with this system.”

But with Phil gone, so is his system, and you are left to wonder if the Knicks would have been better off drafting Dennis Smith, Jr, out of North Carolina State, who has been compared to 2017 NBA MVP Russell Westbrook. Others have suggested Kentucky product Malik Monk, but he seems to remind me of former Knick JR Smith at his best. Monk was far too inconsistent in college for me to think he will be a star in the NBA. Nevertheless, Ntilikina will forever be tied to those players selected after him, and to Phil Jackson, known as the Zen Master, who was a disaster for the New York Knicks.

That was the excitement of many around New York City when the team hired the former Knicks player who won two championships with the franchise in the early 1970s and 11 more as the head coach of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls and Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tips to Avoid ‘Summer Brain Drain’

t’s only natural that kids get excited for summer vacation.

However, parents may be concerned about “summer brain drain,” which occurs when students lose the knowledge they gained during the school year.

U n f o r t u n a t e l y, many children show learning losses when they return to school in the fall, and these summer setbacks are cumulative, resulting in increasing levels of learning loss over time, according to RAND research.

“Parents can keep minds sharp by creating fun summer learning opportunities at home,” says Dr.

To help families avoid summer setbacks, Chau is offering the following ideas and tips.

• Visit a library.

Many libraries offer summer reading challenges which can prove to be great motivation to crack open a book. AUTO COMPANIES FIND SUCCESS WITH DIVERSITY PROGRAMS

that Blacks account for just 2 percent of the tech industry’s entire workforce.

Some tech companies don’t even recognize they have a problem.

A survey by Atlassian showed, “that 83 percent of tech employees believe their company is already diverse, and 79 percent think the average team at their company has a diverse set of team members,” according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

In March, Apple shareholders rejected a plan to accelerate the company’s efforts to increase diversity among its senior management and its board of directors, TheVerge.com reported.

TheVerge.com article continued: “This is the second year in a row that Apple shareholders have shot down the proposal, with just over 95 percent of the vote opposing it this time around—slightly more than last year.”

Ken Barrett, the global chief diversity officer for GM, said that some people look at diversity and inclusion programs as the right thing to do, but the programs are also about business.

“There is a clear business case for diversity and inclusion on the inside and outside of your organization,” said Barrett.

“For us, diversity may be the picture, but inclusion is the test.”

Barrett continued: “Do people really feel empowered to bring their ideas to the forefront? Do they feel empowered to tackle the challenges we face as

a company and ultimately be in a position to spawn new ideas? That [innovation] will ultimately give us that competitive edge.”

Barrett said that for GM to be relevant and to win in the marketplace, the company has to possess cultural competency inside the organization; it’s that awareness that ultimately helps GM to connect with their customers.

Whether it’s concentrating on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions or major organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers or the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers or the Society of Women Engineers, Barrett said that companies must have relationships with diverse communities to attract top talent.

Barrett added that GM didn’t just start thinking about diversity and inclusion.

According to GM’s “Diversity & Inclusion” report, the automaker launched the first minority supplier program in the

auto industry in 1968. GM also initiated the first minority dealer program in the auto industry in 1972 and the first women’s dealer program in 2001.

Barrett noted that General Motors takes pride in the fact that the company promotes from within.

“It’s important to note that Mary Barra started as an intern,” said Barrett.

Barra worked her way through the system all the way up to chairman and CEO. Alicia Boller-Davis, an African-American woman, is the executive vice president for global manufacturing. Barrett noted that Boller-Davis started as an intern, too, and worked her way up to run one of the largest manufacturing organizations in the world.

Barrett also pointed out that Ed Welburn, the former global design chief for GM, was also the first African American designer ever hired at GM. “[Welburn] came in during 70s and was able to move all the way up,” said Barrett Barrett said that it’s

important for minorities to look up and see people like Boller-Davis and Welburn.

“That’s important for us, but we got more to do,” said Barrett.

Barrett continued: “We can be great today, but better tomorrow. We always want to be on the cutting edge. We just don’t want to compete and win in the marketplace, we want to compete and win that battle for talent, as well.”

Volkswagen has also ramped up its efforts to recruit and hire minorities and women.

Lisa Brown, the diversity and inclusion consultant for Volkswagen Group of America, said that in the years she has worked for Volkswagen, she has seen an increase in the amount of women who are beginning to work in a field that is mainly dominated by men.

“I’ve been with Volkswagen for 18 years and worked in after sales as an operation manager,” said Brown. “I was the first female of color and only the second woman who held that position.”

Brown continued: “Now there are a lot more women in the region teams. When I started there were one or two and now there are three or four women per region and five women in our leadership executive position.”

Along with increasing the amount of women in leadership and the workforce at Volkswagen, the company has also partnered with organizations and universities to ensure that the company has access to a highly qualified and diverse talent pool.

Brown stated, “We have partnered with the School of Business at Howard University, the National Black MBA, both the D.C. and Detroit chapters, and Inroads Inc. We also have an executive mentoring program for women.”

Brown said that because of the strong buying and consumer power in the African American community, African-Americans must be conscious of how inclusive these companies are.

Due to the fact that the Black community has such strong buying power, the automotive industry must cater to the Black demographic, Brown added.

Companies need to market to the African-American community and have African American leadership, said Brown.

Brown continued: “There’s a value and appreciation for understanding the partnerships we can create and we have to make sure we have a direct link to the African American community.”

s tech companies struggle to recruit and hire African-Americans and other minorities, companies in another billion-dollar industry, have embraced the importance of diversity and inclusion strategies that are critical to the future success of their businesses.

A recent report published by General Motors found that African Americans account for a higher share of the automaker’s workforce in the United States compared to their share of the total U.S. workforce. Blacks account for 18.1 percent of the total U.S. workforce at General Motors, according to the company’s 2017 “Diversity & Inclusion” report.

GM also reported that 35 percent of all of the company’s U.S. hires were minorities in 2016.

In the report, Mary Barra, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, said that, “at a time when the auto industry, technology and customer preferences are changing rapidly, diversity and inclusion are more vital to GM’s success than ever before.”

Meanwhile, “tech companies like Google, Facebook and Intel have shown little progress since first releasing their diversity numbers in 2014,” according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Google’s own workforce demographic data released in 2014 showed that only 2 percent of the tech giant’s staffers were Black. In fact, the San Francisco-based software firm Atlassian reported

According to data from The Pew Charitable Trusts, 2.9 million grandparents were raising their grandchildren in 2015 compared with 2.5 million in 2005.

Oftentimes, grandparents become primary caregivers due to unforeseen circumstances. Here are three things those taking on this responsibility should consider.

Protect their Financial Future A recent study found 30 percent of all households

he illusion of limitations has been the foundation of greed, power and control for centuries. We have all been socially programed to believe in our perceived limitations. If you do not believe that you have been socially programed from a very early age, it only means that your programing is very deep. The only way to begin the journey of deprogramming oneself is to admit to yourself that most of what you believe about yourself, your abilities and station in life is based on

illusionary programed thought.

Wallace D. Wattles described the illusion of limitations in his ground breaking book “The Science of Getting Rich”; when he wrote about competitive thinking and creative thinking. Competitive thinking, according to Wattles, is fueled by the illusion of limitations. The foundation of creative thinking is the knowledge of self and your god-given gift of thought manifestation.

You are who and what you think that you are. If you are not happy with who you are you have the ability to change.

First you must make sure you really understand who you really are and not the person social programing has labeled you to be. Creative thinking will allow you to break free from the illusion of limitation.

You must first replace fear and doubt with faith.

We have to learn to move our socially programed self out of our way. Only faith can help you do that. When you stop being your own worst enemy your creative mind will allow you to manifest new possibilities. Creativity is to limitations like light is to dark. I believe we are moving deeper into the age of the creative mind. More people are learning about the power of creative thinking.

All thoughts of work, New York etc . . . were washed away in one fell swoop. All I could do was think about how fortunate I was to be sitting on the beach, enjoying, relaxing and taking in the fresh air. Those two days were what made me decide that I was indeed socially and vacation-ally challenged. So I have made a decision. I am going on vacation!

So, it’s time for you to come out of your cave and live!

Give yourself permission to enjoy your life. Have fun.

to do? If you haven’t made any plans then you are short-changing yourself. Life is sailing right past you. Refuse to lift your head up and see the opportunities in front of you; and the boat will slip silently through the channel and out to sea, leaving you at the shore, landlocked and alone.

Are you afraid to poke your head out of your cave? Call a friend and invite them to join you.

Don’t know what to do? Do anything!

Do something that will force you to interact with people. Don’t have any friends? Wrong! Ev-

eryone has friends and acquaintances in their life, maybe you haven’t made the effort to connect with anyone. Give it a try; you will be surprised at how receptive people can be when you step outside your comfort zone. Maybe you have a friend who needs your help.

Offer your hand in friendship. Show a sister/brother some love. Me, I’m going fishing with a friend.

“Surpassing Certainty” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

W

hen you were 20, you wanted only to impress.

If people looked at you, wasn’t that good? You wanted to be seen, watched and adored by those you saw as desirable.

But what, exactly, did you want people to notice? Was it your hair, your body or, as in “Surpassing Certainty” by Janet Mock, was the whole you on display?

At age 19, Janet Mock should never have been where she was, three nights a week.

Her Thursday-through-Saturday schedule was meant for women over 21; that was the legal age for dancing as a stripper in a Waikiki club, but the proprietress of the club jokingly offered to “give” Mock two of her own birthdays, and that was that: Mock was a dancer,

albeit a self-conscious one.

She was afraid that someone could spot her secret from the bar rail.

At a very young age, Mock knew she was a girl in a boy’s body. Her mother looked the other way while Mock wore feminine clothing and grew out her hair, and she ignored when Mock started taking female hormones as an adolescent. After saving every penny, Mock flew to Bangkok to finalize her transition at 18; months later, she realized that nobody saw her as anything but a pretty black woman.

But the club, well, money was good there and she settled in. She sometimes made a cool grand a week and she didn’t have to sleep with customers; the club’s owner, in fact, urged her girls not to do so. “Love

can wait,” she’d said, but when Mock met the man she’d ultimately marry, there was no reason not to take the plunge.

He was a Navy man who took Mock’s truth in stride, but the two grew apart: Mock quit dancing before she quit the marriage to move to New York City to attend college, where she felt empowered as a woman in control of her life. She made friends, decided what she wanted to do with her life, landed the job of her dreams and, “I was home.”

Filled with florid prose and swoony drama, “Surpassing Certainty” is one of those memoirs that feels like a long conversation.

That can be a good thing, and it can be bad.

In speaking directly to readers, author Janet Mock offers an

aura of girlfriendship. We’re privy to many details – maybe even too many – and the information is meted out as if we’re all Sex-inthe-City in a bistro somewhere on a Sunday afternoon.

And yet, this conversation doesn’t seem to have a point.

Mock writes at great length about stripping. She tells about her many loves, fusses too much about her appearance, and shares thoughts about men that reflect her youth at the time. Except for a juicy admission of omission in her last book, this seemed like a lot of navel-gazing.

Heavy sigh.

If you read Mock’s first memoir and are eager for more, by all means, find this one because you’ll love it.

For most readers, though, “Surpassing Certainty” may not completely impress.
