GOOD NEWS This week Harlem said farewell to a true Harlemite, community and civil rights activist - Beverly Alston. Her home-going celebration at Abyssinian Baptist church held this past Tuesday was a testament to her life of dedication and activism for her beloved community - Harlem.(see page 3) The 125th Street BID is taking the lead on cleaning up and beautifying Harlem with the “Healthy and Clean Harlem Campaign” they launched earlier this year.

Beverly Alston 1950-2018

was born to them on December 27, 1976.

After 10 years of marriage, Beverly and Calvin separated and she met Joseph Leake, the second love of her life.

By 1979, Beverly and Joe were inseparable, and shortly thereafter formed a blended family with Sabena, Tanya, Jared and Calvin.

As an intellectually gifted student, Beverly attended Harlem public schools IS 28, JHS 136 and Benjamin Franklin HS where she excelled in all subject matter. At the ripe age of 13, Beverly attended the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, one early predictor of what would be the next 55+ years of community involvement and activism. Besides her early involvement with HARYOU-ACT, Beverly was also active with the Harlem Community School Board, ran for District Leader in 1987 and was an early influencer and lifetime member of the National Action Network (NAN).

With energy to spare, between jobs at prestigious companies such as American Express, CBS and Bear Sterns, she started her own word processing temp agency, Best Word.

Graduating City College in 1994, Beverly received her Bachelor’s degree and continued making an impact with Harlem residents in various roles: elementary school teacher at P.S.

123; regional assistant administration manager for the 2000 Census; housing director for affordable housing program Phase Piggyback; director of Healthy NY. She continued her political involvement through various coordination and management leadership roles in a plethora of campaigns and offices including Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Reverend Al Sharpton, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Democratic Minority Leader (and later Lieutenant Governor) David A. Paterson, Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright, Councilmembers Helen Diane Foster and Inez E. Dickens.

Although she retired in 2016 as a New York State superintendent for the Office of General Service, she did not slow down. She continued doing consulting work for local political and judicial candidates.

She also stayed busy and active with community roles including President of the River-

bend Cooperative Board of Directors, President of the Henry J. Carter Nursing Home Community Advisory Board, Secretary of the Owners Association of Ridge Top Village at Shawnee Resorts and member of Abyssinian Baptist Church. She is President Emeritus of various organizations including the Uptown Democratic Club (UDC - of which she is also a founding member), the African American Day Parade Breakfast Committee and Harlem Historic Parks’ Jackie Robinson Park Conservancy. She is also a former member of the NAACP – Mid-Manhattan Branch, Harlem Hospital Community Advisory Board and Community Board 11.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her partner of 39 years, Joseph Leake and her son, Calvin Alston. She is also survived by Joe’s three children, Sabena, Tanya and Jared, whom she loved dearly; five grandchildren, Mikai,

Jared Joseph (JJ), Mackenzie Zahara, Cameron Arthur and Calvin, Jr. (CJ); three brothers, Robert, Eukhani and Arthur (Kayo); six sisters Irene (Peanut), Jeanne, Earline, Lisa, Trina and Linda; one uncle, Ricky, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many special friends.

everly Alston passed last week after losing her battle to cancer. As President of the Board of Rivebend Housing, she was in the midst of overseeing the production of the 50th anniversary events. Beverly served two terms as president of the board of Riverbend Housing and several years on the board. She was known to Riverbend residents and the community at large as a dedicated hard worker for any cause she decided to take on.

Beverly’s funeral held on Tuesday, July 17th at Abyssinian Baptist church was a celebration and testament of a life well-lived as the chuch was filled with standing room only as hundreds came out to pay their respects. Reverend Al Sharpton referred to Beverly as the ultimate civil rights worker.

There were dozens of proclamations, citations and letters from elected officials. There were musical tributes such as Sophisticated Lady on saxaphone and She Did It Her Way which was so moving there was a standing ovation.

Harlem’s favorite daughter, Beverly Ann Alston, was born on May 25, 1950 to Arthur (Kayo) Smith and Bobbie Lane in her beloved village of Harlem. Until her last breath on July 11, 2018, Beverly was surrounded by a host of family and friends. Family meant everything to Beverly; her greatest attribute was her love and devotion to her immediate family (children and grandchildren), extended family, and friends (most of whom were considered adopted family). Those who knew Beverly also knew that same love and devotion came with a candid, unfiltered opinion; she would tell you how she felt, whatever she felt, in that moment. You couldn’t be upset though because, in the end, she was always willing to be there for you when you needed her. Her heart was huge and full of love. She lived life to the fullest, traveling, entertaining, cooking, watching sports, dancing and politicking.

Beverly was blessed to find love not once but twice in her life. As an aspiring leader selected for HARYOU-ACT’s leadership training program (including mentorship by Malcom X), Beverly met and fell in love with Calvin Alston to whom she married August 12, 1967 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. To their joy, Calvin Alston, Jr.

Diaspora Meeting with our Historic Pioneers

t was a special day in Harlem, and fifty was the magic number on June 25th when the same number of notable New Yorkers and our historic pioneers, were respectfully invited by co-hosts, Rev. Al Sharpton and Lloyd Williams, to a 50th Anniversary breakfast summit of memory and celebration. It has been a long time since Sylvia’s restaurant was packed with such a coterie of dignitaries, each reflecting on personal and collective experiences at the core of the New York’s urban history.

“While all of the attendees are unto themselves, well-known,” said Williams, “because everyone is so busy, you’d be surprised how little they truly know each other. They may know the name but can’t recall the face, and vice versa.”

After Williams called the meeting to order, Rev. Sharpton gave some powerful remarks on the meeting’s purpose. Sharpton addressed the times we currently live in – Trump; Supreme Court appointments; children being separated on the Mexican border only to find that hundreds of the children are now placed in Harlem shelters just a few blocks away from Sylvia’s. And he addressed the need for the clergy to step up and provide the visionary leadership and direction badly needed. Sharpton 4 and Williams thanked

This city-wide diverse assembly of business persons, elected officials and former iconic office holders, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, community activists, clergy, educators, media and arts and culture mavens come together represented a cross section of New York’s Diaspora (Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Dominican, African and African-American). It was not only an opportunity for them to know each better but also to recount a few of the hallmarks of their illustrious careers over the past half century.

A gallery of stunned and amused expressions were often seen as a rosary of memories spilled from the participants—they learned by turns a little bit more about the political ascendance of former NYC Mayor David Dinkins, former US Rep. Charles Rangel, civil rights legend Hazel Dukes, former NYS Gov. David Paterson, and how former NYS Comptroller H. Carl McCall handled more than $120 billion in the pension fund as the state’s first African American comptroller.

The two hours allocated were well spent and went by quickly.

The comments and remarks from the elders—Rangel, Dinkins, Dukes, McCall and Paterson—were representative of Diaspora pioneers in atten-

dance from Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. The room was bubbling over with history, most of it informative, humorous and inspirational, particularly for some of the younger members in the audience.

And the remarks combined all of the above values as when Mayor Dinkins, recalling the importance of the people who helped him to become the city’s first Black mayor, cited a piece of folk tale about how a turtle at the top of a ten foot pole got there. “He certainly didn’t get there by himself,” Dinkins quipped.

When asked how he felt about becoming the city’s first Black mayor, he said, “If you like public service, there’s nothing like being the mayor of New York City.”

In his reflection on the last half century, Rep. Rangel fondly remembered his predecessor Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. “If you read the book “King of the Cats,” you will get some idea of how influential Adam was on international and domestic issues,” he said. “That’s why it took months even before people knew my name.”

Former Gov. Paterson said he was in grade school fifty years ago, and remembered that after Dr. King was assassinated, his father, (the late great) Basil Paterson, when seeing how difficult it was going to be to attend Dr.

King’s funeral service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, decided to go to Memphis and participate in a King memorial march called by the same sanitation workers who Dr. King was supporting, resulting in his assassination in Memphis. Later he would elaborate on Harlem’s legendary Gang of Four, agreeing with Bishop Herbert Daughtry that the late Herman Denny Farrell was in fact, an original member, not Percy E. Sutton. But he received his greatest response when he answered how he became the state’s first Black governor after Eliot Spitzer’s resignation. “That was the best benefit I ever got from sex and I wasn’t even there,” he cracked.

Dr. Hazel Dukes regaled the gathering with wit and memory, recounting how she broke the racial barrier in Nassau County and became a stalwart in the NAACP. “Two people were instrumental in my political development,” Dukes began, “my ‘dad’ Basil Paterson and my ‘big brother’ Percy Sutton. They convinced me that I could be a leader.” She reminded folks that she was born in Montgomery Alabama, and later moved to New York and integrated Roslyn, Long Island, and shortly thereafter, became the fifth member of “The Gang of Four.” I have earned my stripes.”

McCall also had fervent personal memories of Percy Sutton, recall-

ing that he was among the first members of the community “to reach out to me” when he arrived here from Boston. “That, and working with David Dinkins on voting registration, meant a lot to me and facilitated my growth and development.”

As the morning progressed, it increasingly became a very organic session that included three Als—Sharpton, Vann, Taylor —and two exceptional women, Dukes and Jackie Rowe-Adams, who are both included in the “transformative 44 women” for the 44th anniversary of HARLEM WEEK, the longest week in the year, Williams added.

Several in attendance echoed a call for follow up meetings in order to continue the fruitful dialogue. “I want to thank Lloyd and Rev. Al for giving us a day where we have the opportunity to discuss where we were, where we are now, and where we need to go from here,” said Rep. Rangel. He said another meeting was necessary “for us to lay out agendas.”

Mayor Dinkins agreed, and noted, “We don’t’ always have to agree. A whole lot of folks didn’t vote for me.” He concluded with a special shout out to Attorney Michael Hardy, “who got me out of jail.”

Williams summoned the memory of Percy Sutton at the close, invoking the great man’s word ‘common.’ “By

realizing what we have in common we can become communal. If we are communal we will communicate, and when we communicate we will become a united community.”

When the second meeting assembles in September, that ‘common to community’ concept will once more get a chance to solidify and ensure that Diaspora will not be uninformed.

Then there will be time to hear from cultural maven Vy Higginsen, Assembly Member Inez Dickens, Representatives Adriano Espaillat and Gregory Meeks, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Arva Rice, president of the NY Urban League, Ed Lewis, co-founder of Essence Magazine, Rev. Jacques DeGraff and others wise enough to wait their turn to add their voices to an increasingly important historic conversation and more are needed.

Other prominent invitees who, because of long standing schedule conflicts, could not be in attendance and were missed, included Elinor Tatum, Rev. Michael Walrond, Hon. C. Virginia Fields, Rev. Calvin Butts III, Councilman Bill Perkins, Brooklyn BP Eric Adams, Walter Edwards, Barbara Askins, and Rev. Marvin Moss.

Throughout the Diaspora of New York, all are waiting for the next meeting which will be called in September.

“Community centers are the hub of a neighborhood – where people go to feel connected to others. Investing in opportunities for residents, and young people in particular, to build community while engaging in recreation, enrichment, and conversation with their neighbors is an important priority of the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety,” said Executive Director of the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety Renita Francois.

“Thanks to the Mayor’s commitment to keeping communities engaged during the longest days of the year, DYCD-funded Cornerstone community centers at 94 NYCHA developments have expanded nighttime and weekend hours for the fifth straight summer since 2014. With the doors open later and longer, we are providing New Yorkers with a home away from home – a summer safe space with high-quality programs at no cost to our young people and their families,” said DYCD Commissioner Bill Chong.

The extended hours are a part of NYCHA’s

Teen Expansion Program, launched in 2014 in partnership with MOCJ and the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP).

MOCJ has provided $4.2 million to support the expanded programming annually. Teen Expansion offers classes and events for youth ages 12 to 24, including athletic activities, performing arts, field trips, creative workshops, and more.

MAP is dedicated to enhancing community safety through enhanced opportunities for local residents. In addition to the Teen Expansion Program, MAP has invested in improved security infrastructure at NYCHA and expanding the Summer Youth Employment Program.

The Cornerstone program is a collaboration between NYCHA and DYCD to provide DYCD-funded programs for youth and adults at 94 NYCHA community centers.

he New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ), and the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) announced the start of extended summertime hours at NYCHA community centers.

Between July 9 and August 31, 119 community centers in NYCHA developments will extend their hours on weekdays and weekends to offer young New Yorkers a safe, productive space in their neighborhoods. The centers will be open on weekdays between 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (normally 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and weekends from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. (normally closed).

“Our community centers offer young New Yorkers a safe, productive space to engage and learn,” said NYCHA Executive Vice President for Community Engagement and Partnerships Sideya Sherman.

“Extending the centers’ operating hours during the summer furthers the City’s commitment to support and empower our youngest residents and neighbors.”

ere are some more common mistakes that have plagued prospective first-time buyers.

These mistakes have thwarted their efforts to complete the home buying process.

Making a mistake during the home buying process it can set back your projected purchase date by several months costing you valuable time and money.

Here are some mistakes to avoid: (1) Do not put down any money until after you had the property inspected. Use a licensed New York City inspector. Most homes in New York are sold “as is.” Meaning what you see; is what you get. Many firsttime buyers are just happy to be finally at this stage of the process. They can see the

But they are not familiar with the various systems in a house or what questions to ask such as, what type fuel is used oil or gas? What is the age of the boiler and the hot water tank? Does the electrical system comply with the building codes?

An inspector can determine the condition of the house. They can inform you of the approximate age of the property. He can tell if the house needs costly repairs or is a good investment. If you put money down on the property before getting it inspected, the seller is less motivated to make the “needed” repairs. They already have your money. It can be difficult to get out to the deal.

(2) Attend an approved housing counseling workshop before starting the process. People who buy without attending a workshop are most likely to make a costly mistake. The home buying workshop will give you insights on how to navigate through this tricky process.

13-year-old Gerson Tzoc took photograph of dressed up teen in Guatemala. Tzoc and the other youth whose photographs are on display, are part of an organization FotoKids founded in 1991 by photojournalist Nancy McGirr.

FotoKids helps Central American youth develop employable skills as well as mentors them in ways to use photography and creative writing as a tool for self-reflection.

Jack Delano was sent by the Farmer Security Administration to document the labor conditions of workers and documented his observations in a collection of photographs, including this one from 1942 of a woman in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

In the Immaculate Conception School parking lot Erika P. Rodríguez’s photographs capture the destruction of Hurricane Maria, causing over 4,600 deaths and the courage and resilience of the Puerto Rican people through the island’s recovery.

New Lilly Diabetes Helpline to Assist People Seeking Solutions to Insulin Affordability

tarting August 1, a new dedicated helpline called the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center will assist people who need help paying for their insulin – such as those with lower incomes, the uninsured, and people in the deductible phase of their high-deductible insurance plans, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) announced today.

A customized suite of solutions for all Lilly insulins, including for Humalog® (insulin lispro), will be used by helpline operators to find answers that best fit the personal circumstances of patients.

Among the multiple solutions being made available through the helpline are shortterm and long-term options for people with immediate needs for insulin and how people with lower incomes can access Lilly insulin through free clinics.

Lilly is donating Humalog and Humulin® (insulin human in-

Free clinics Lilly is donating insulin to three relief agencies – Americares, Direct Relief, and Dispensary of Hope – to eventually supply nearly 150 free clinics across the U.S. with Lilly insulin. Helpline operators will point people toward clinics that are most convenient to them and explain how to access them. Lilly is working now with the relief agencies to identify as many clinics as possible that can adequately store and distribute insulin to people who need it. (Qualifications will differ clinic-to-clinic).

Point of sale savings We are increasing our financial assistance for people who may need help paying for insulin. The helpline will use a suite of solutions to find answers for people who face the highest out-of-pocket costs such as people who are uninsured and people who pay significant costs when they are in the deductible phase of their high-deductible commercial insurance plans.

The solutions will be customizable based upon personal circumstances and will include options for all Lilly insulins.

Immediate Needs for Insulin If someone has an immediate need for insulin, they will be able to call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center to learn about immediate and longer-term options. “Our goal is to ensure everyone who needs insulin can get it,” said Mike Mason, senior

L

ast week I was able to watch both versions of the Manchurian Candidate on Amazon, the first one came out in 1962 and starred Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey the remake came out in 2004 and starred Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber. The plot of the films was interesting, soldiers were captured, and brain washed one of the soldier’s a US senator’s son was programmed to become a

This plot was interesting to me because I have always been fascinated by how the conscious and unconscious minds work. We all are victims of social programing.

Most of the things that we believe to be right or wrong, good or bad are programmed thoughts that we were exposed to from an early age. Then there is the power of suggestion which can be very subjective to both the conscious and unconscious mind.

Many believe that even when we were in our mother’s womb, negative emotions and experiences that our

mother might have had, can influence our behavior years later even when we become adults. Then there is Hypnosis which is defined as a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction.

The intriguing thing about any type of programming of one’s unconscious mind is that the person is not consciously aware of the programming but will react if a program suggestion is activated in the unconscious programmed mind. I will always remember the scene in the 1962 ver-

It’s never good when someone tells you that. Even if it’s said with a smile and a pat on the back, you can feel doom in those words. “We have to talk” never helps anyone except when, as in “What Truth Sounds Like” by Michael Eric Dyson, it does.

In late May of 1963, Robert “Bobby” Kennedy, Attorney General for President John Kennedy, did something remarkable enough to make the front page of The New York Times: he had a “secret” meeting with a group of Black leaders to discuss “an ‘explosive situation’” that could impact the nation.

ew and emerging technologies are supporting today’s students and teachers in unprecedented ways. Here are a few ways this is happening in schools in local communities across the country.

• Communication Apps. New apps such as ClassDojo, are making it easier for teachers to actively communicate with students and parents. Teachers can send encouraging messages to students via the app and message with parents. What’s more, students can create digital portfolios to share at

home with their families. With flexibility to access the app on tablets, phones, computers and smartboards, its versatility helps foster a learning community.

• Collaborative Math Resources. The textbook is no longer the sole resource math students can rely on to succeed. New software is making mathematics more accessible, interactive and personalized. For example, ClassPad.net, a onestop shop for educators and students, helps students investigate mathematics more deeply and enhance their understanding of related concepts. Designed to

be equally usable by keyboard/mouse and touchscreen-based platforms, this all-inone web-based mathematics resource is geared for K-12 mathematics and beyond.

Allowing for simultaneous work with calculations, graphing, geometry and data analysis/statistics, this tech helps teachers demonstrate things they can’t show in other ways, something 65 percent of educators said was important in a study conducted by PBS Learning Media.

• World “Travel.”

While nothing will replace the excitement of a field trip, leaving

school grounds can be time consuming and cost prohibitive. Luckily, no permission slip is required to travel the world from the comfort of the classroom.

Today’s classrooms are using Google Earth to virtually visit the sites of a distant city or observe the topography of a mountain range. They can also access the collections and exhibitions of museums and libraries around the world online. And augmented reality is creating new opportunities to “visit” interesting locations and engage with their surroundings.

• Advanced Lesson Presentations.
