f you think church folk don’t pray and play, you missed the yacht on Sunday, July 10, 2016. Following morning worship service, the party was on as the congregants of Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church and its Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Calvin Otis Butts, III made their way downtown to board The Duchess docked at Pier 81.

Cruising up, down and all around the island of Manhattan was the right thing to be doing on that sunny Sunday afternoon. Three decks full of laughter and fellowshipping. Good food, good fun, good music to shake a tail feather to the nostalgic sound of the best oldies but goodies

on the main deck. Happy members, happy church! #BlackJoy has been a hashtag at the church on several occasions and it has proven to be worth its weight in gold. Abyssinians have a lot to be joyful about and a cause to celebrate. With faith, intention and a divine plan, great works are being accomplished.

Two years of pledging and tithing have been the foundation of a grand endeavor to build a $12 million educational center on Odell Clark Place (138th Street) west of the church, extending all the way to and around the corner on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd.

As a result of Dr. Butts’ progressive thinking and

a sincere desire to provide needed space for study and educational opportunities for the youth of the church and the community, the structure is already a sight to behold under construction cascading five floors high.

Celebration time, come on! The cruise was the perfect setting to extend good wishes. Happy Birthday Dr. Butts. Not even the rocking of the yacht now and then

Truly in his element, surrounded by an admiring flock of followers and the ministers who work alongside him in the vineyard, friends and family, Butts was as sharp as a tack, which is the norm for this man of distinction, right down to his white shoes.

energetic folk hankering for a full fledge party, might be a stretch for some, but Reverend Butts took it all in stride, hand shaking as he circled the decks, smiling and leaning in for the steady flow of selfies, plus a couple of smooth steps on the dance floor.

He cut his cake, expressed his love and appreciation and thanked God. The birthday cake and a wide variety of other decadent desserts

The answer is on the surface pretty obvious but not necessarily completely clear. Yes, it is becoming more difficult to find a good deal. This is still a seller’s market, meaning the demand for homes is far greater than the available supply.

Many homes are not staying on the market long enough for the seller to come down on the asking price.

For first time home buyers here are some tips you must implement into your strategy to become successful: (1) Remain patient. Pa-

How to Stay Safe When Digging (Statepoint) on Your Property

hether you are a “do-it-yourself” homeowner or a contracted professional, before starting landscaping or home improvement projects, it is essential to protect yourself and stay safe when digging.

Most people are surprised to learn that there are more than 100 billion feet of underground utilities in the U.S. This equates to more than one football field’s length of buried utilities for every man, woman and child in the country, according to the Common Ground Alliance, an organization dedicated to protecting the safety of people who dig near underground utility lines.

Every six minutes in the U.S., an underground utility line is damaged because someone did not call 811, the national “Call Before You Dig” phone number, or connect online at www. call811.com.

Each year, August 11 (8/11) is a reminder to dig safely and lawfully. It’s important to dial 811 or connect online to have the approximate location of underground utilities and pipelines marked, whether you’re installing a fence, deck or swimming pool; planting a tree; or beginning any excavation project at home or on your property.

Protect yourself and those around you from injury by contacting 811. Not only is it the law, but knowing where pipelines and underground utility lines are buried prevents unintentional damage, service interruptions, potential fines and costly repairs.

You must contact 811 every time, even if you have done so previously for a similar project, as the depth of utilities can vary, and there may be multiple utilities located in the same area.

Contacting 811 When you contact 811, information will be collected about your digging plans, and local pipeline and utility companies will be notified about your project. Representatives will be sent to mark the approximate location of underground utilities using color-coded paint, flags or stakes. If there are no underground utilities in the area, they will mark “clear.”

The advance notice required to have underground utilities marked varies by state, although most require 48 to 72 hours (excluding weekends, holidays and the day the call was made).

Project Planning • Regardless of the depth of your digging or your familiarity with the property, always contact 811 before starting a project that involves digging.

• If a contractor has been hired, confirm they have done so. Don’t allow work to start until all utilities have been marked.

• After you have waited the required time for markings, if utilities have not been marked, you must contact 811 again to check the status of your request before digging. Also confirm whether the markings have an expiration date and when they will need to be remarked.

• If your project is located near the paint, flags or stakes, contact the underground operator for the specific steps you should take.

“Motown, The Musical” Is A Blast From Our Musical Past!

“Motown, The Musical” is a great time on Broadway.

Imagine going to the theatre and hearing the classic Motown sound from talented singers and getting to learn the story of how Berry Gordy dreamed of and founded Motown. “Motown, The Musical” takes you through all that he went through to found the music empire and how hard he worked to select and promote his artists. It also shows how some artists seemed to turn their backs on him and left the Motown family. The audience is introduced to the story the day that Motown will have a 25th Anniversary celebration and Gordy insists that he will not attend.

The audience gets to hear parts and sometimes entire renditions of over 40 Motown hits.

We see the dance moves and the stunning costumes by Esosa. What’s really amazing is just watching the background Motown tale. The cast is absolutely phenomenal. It is headed

by Chester Gregory, who plays Gordy. Gregory is no stranger to Broadway, he has performed in “Hairspray,” “Tarzan,” “Cry Baby” and “Sister Act.” Gregory is someone who proved his abilities a long time

ago, as far as I’m concerned.

This young man starred in “The Jackie Wilson Story” and demonstrated then that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Now as Gordy he dazzles every time he comes on stage.

Gregory has a great stage presence, a remarkable singing voice and is simply charming to watch. Allison Semmes was the understudy for Diana Ross, but played Florence Ballard when Motown was previously on Broadway. Now she has the starring role as Diana and she deserves it. She is magnetic on the stage. She is beautiful, her voice is gorgeous and she connects with the audience. She is a pleasure to watch.

Jarran Muse is gripping in the role of Marvin Gaye and sings his songs with passion and feeling. Jesse Nager is good in the role of Smokey Robinson. Leon Outlaw Jr. played the youth roles of Berry Gordy, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson and he rocked the house! That young man is superb, especially as Michael Jackson. He has the audience in the palm of his hand.

This musical is beautifully placed on Broadway and has such a timely message. It looks at the social times that happened around the music

When Retirement Accounts Multiply, Is It Time To Consolidate?

A

fter decades of job hopping – by necessity or design – some people have accumulated several retirement accounts, making it a confusing chore to keep track of what’s happening with their money.

They may, for example, have three 401(k) accounts, a Roth IRA and a couple of traditional IRAs. “That’s just the way it is these days,” says Bryan Slovon, founder and CEO of Stuart Financial Group (www.Stuartfg.com). “It’s a natural result of people changing jobs several times over their lifetime.”

But it raises a question: Is it best to leave everything as is, keeping a mishmash of accounts, or is consolidation worth considering?

For anyone weighing that question, Slovon says factors to take into account include: • Roth IRAs. If you are in a consolidation mood, one thing to remember is you don’t want to mix the money in a Roth IRA with the money in a traditional IRA or a 401(k) account.

The reason: Contributions to a Roth IRA have already been taxed, so you don’t pay tax on them when you reach retirement and begin

withdrawing money. But with traditional IRAs and 401(k) accounts, the taxes were deferred so they are subject to tax when you begin withdrawals.

• Nondeductible IRAs. Money placed in a nondeductible IRA, as the name implies, isn’t a deduction on your income taxes. That means you won’t pay any taxes on the money you contributed when the time comes to withdraw it either.

Just as with a Roth IRA, you don’t want this money mixed with retirement money that is taxed when it is withdrawn.

counts. Often you can merge a 401(k) from a previous employer into a 401(k) at your new employer. That kind of consolidation can be convenient because you just have one account to monitor. But it’s not always the best strategy because some 401(k) plans are better than others. Fees with the old plan might be lower than the new plan, or the investment options might be more varied. You also have the option to roll the old 401(k) into an IRA, which could be worth considering depending on your circumstances.

• Making college more affordable: Nearly all families took at least one cost-saving measure, while most took five or more. These measures include cutting personal spending, working while in school, living at home, and taking accelerated coursework to graduate faster.

Additionally, four in five students attended college in their home state, and one in three started at community college. Eighty-five percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

• Borrowing not a forgone conclusion: Fewer than half of families borrowed last year. In fact, the proportions of funding from family savings and income and scholarships and grants were twice as high as the proportion of funds borrowed.

• Cost important, but not top factor: Sixty-seven percent of families narrow college choices based on cost, but when it comes to making the final decision, this takes a back seat.

amilies spent less outof-pocket for college in academic year 2015-16 compared to last year, as they took advantage of more scholarships and grants to foot the bill, according to “How America Pays for College 2016,” the national study from Sallie Mae, the country’s largest private student lender, and Ipsos, a global independent market research company.

Scholarships and grants covered 34 percent of college costs, according to the report, the largest percentage of any resource over the last five years.

Approximately, half of families used a scholarship or grant to help pay for college.

“Families wrote smaller checks for college this year as they looked less to their wallets and more toward free money to make college happen,” says Raymond Quinlan, chairman and chief executive officer, Sallie Mae, a company focused on helping families save, plan and pay for college. “Scholarships and grants have become an increasingly important part of the pay-for-college mix, and it’s encouraging to see organizations, schools, and the government stepping up to provide them.”

• Bachelor’s: the new norm: Families are firmly in agreement on the value of college: 98 percent believe it’s an investment in their student’s future and 90 percent expect their student to earn a bachelor’s degree. What’s more, 54 percent of families expect their student to earn a graduate degree.

Friday the 13th

I

often wondered why Friday the 13th was considered a day of misfortune and bad luck. Whenever I have a question about numbers I seek advice from my good friend Lloyd Strayhorn, who is one of the most learned African American numerologists in the world with several numerology books on Amazon.com.

Lloyd’s first book “Numbers and You” has a chapter about Friday the 13th plus an understanding of the number 13 from the perspective of a numerologist.

Lloyd explains how in early Europe people used

symbols to communicate.

The symbol on the 13th Tarot Card was labeled Death with a Skeleton and a scythe in hand. This card was believed to be bad luck. The early European interpretation of 13 being the number of misfortune continues today. Many buildings do not have a 13th floor. Only a few then and now understand that the belief of misfortune and bad luck connected to the number 13 is not correct.

In Ancient Kimet the number 13 was a symbol of power. Lloyd writes “the ancients described 13 as a “symbol of power, which if wrongly used, wreaks destruction upon itself. He who

understands the number 13 will be given power and dominion”. Until very recently the wisdom and philosophical thought of ancient Kimet were keep secret from the masses. The political power of religion made the study and/or practice of the knowledge and Mysticism of ancient Kimet a crime against the church; ungodly.

It took 359 years for the Catholic Church on November 1, 1992 to admit that Galileo Galilei was not guilty of heresy for his belief that the earth and all other planets revolve around the Sun. Pope John Paul II acknowledged in a speech that “the church would rectify the wrong.”

This was a major reason only members of secret societies had access to ancient Kimet wisdom. Galileo was influenced by Nicolaus Copernicus who was influenced

by Aristarchus of Samos, a Greek astrologer who studied in ancient Kimet centuries earlier during the time of Alexander.

I made mention in past articles (www.theartofwarogers.com) how major figures in the development of the symbolism and philosophy of the new American government, leaders like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington, were members of secret societies. They were either Masons or Rosicrucian.

While being slave holders, the founding fathers built the symbolic foundation of

h, the weather is beautiful and the sun feels so good on your skin. This week I want to talk a bit about protecting the one major organ that protects all the other organs in your body . . . your skin! Needless to say your skin’s got ya’ covered!

But do you have it covered as well? If not then you may be putting your health at risk each and every day. There has been a great deal of talk over the years about the increased risk of skin cancer and the af-

fect that over-exposure to the sun has on the appearance and texture of the skin. Yet, for some reason there are people who still sunbathe or are “just out in it” without protection.

Why risk it?

Your skin is the one organ that is constantly exposed to the elements—rain, wind, cold and of course, the sun’s rays. It is up to you to look out for your skin’s best interests by protecting it from things that might harm it and ultimately . . . your health.

A few things to remember: Skin is skin regardless of complexion. The consequences of over-exposure are the same, the increased risk of certain types of skin cancers, sunburn, wrinkles, freckles etc . . . whether you are lying out by the pool or going about your daily activities.

The key to using any kind of sunscreen product is to use it properly and apply it to all areas exposed to the sun, and to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

There is no such thing as a “safe tan.” The only guarantee of 100% protection is to stay indoors in a darkened room.

If you prefer a tanning salon, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Tanning salons use UVA rays, which penetrate deeper than UVB rays. According to dermatologists, prolonged and longterm exposure to UVA rays may result in an increased risk of developing skin cancer, sun spots, premature wrinkling as well as developing leathery skin. Other possibilities include the risk of photosensitizing, which occurs if you take any one of more than 200 prescribed or over-the-counter

medications, which include diuretics, antibiotics and some pain killers.

Why risk a sun burn or worse when you can protect your skin? It’s so much easier to take advantage of some of the preventive and sensible options available to help you maintain youthful looking skin for as long as possible.

Disabled Youth Helped by Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx

S

tephen Santos is a young man with disabilities, but he still has a future, thanks in part due to the Smilow clubhouse. This is part of the network of the Madison Square Boys & Girls Clubs. Many students with a disability do not graduate high school and are not able to get a job. This situation is even more difficult for families with a limited income. It has taken an effort to help such students, including special education, and building up their confidence.

I got to talk to Stephon Santos about the Smilow clubhouse located at Hoe Avenue and East 174th Street in the Bronx. He goes there after school
