Further, White said it’s important to be organized – set aside a manila folder for all tax documents.

“Schedule your appointment early, especially if you have a child applying for financial aid and, if you have not updated your payroll department with your new address, do so today to avoid delays,” she said.

The new tax year accompanies an interesting set of new facts for African-Americans, according to The White House.

For instance, the unemployment rate for African-Americans has seen a larger percentage-point decline in the recovery, much faster than the overall unemployment rate over the last year, President Barack Obama’s administration reported.

The real median income of Black households increased by 4.1 percent between 2014 and 2015 and President Obama enacted permanent expansions of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, which together now provides about 2 million African-American working families with an average tax cut of

about $1,000 each.

A recent report from the Census Bureau revealed that the real median household income grew 5.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, the fastest annual growth on record.

Income grew for households across the income distribution, with the fastest growth among lower- and middle-income households.

The number of people in poverty fell by 3.5 million, leading the poverty rate to fall from 14.8 percent to 13.5 percent, the largest one-year drop since 1968, with even larger improvements including for African-Americans, Latino-Americans, and children.

The poverty rate for African-Americans fell faster in 2015 than in any year since 1999. While the poverty rate fell across all racial and ethnic groups this year, it fell 2.1 percentage points for African-Americans, resulting in 700,000 fewer African-Americans in poverty.

African-American children also made large gains in 2015, with the poverty rate falling 4.2 percentage points and 400,000 fewer children in poverty.

So, for tax time, it means more Afri-

can-Americans need to better understand what they should and shouldn’t do; what deductions and credits might be available, White said.

The veteran tax expert urges contributions to 2016 Roth accounts and, if donations have been made to charities in any amount above $250, be sure and have the proof to support the write-off.

The Internal Revenue said charitable contributions are deductible in the year made and donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2016 count for the 2016 tax year, even if the bill isn’t paid until 2017.

Also, checks to a charity count for 2016 if they are mailed by the last day of the year.

Taxpayers who are over age 70 ½ are generally required to receive payments from their individual retirement accounts and workplace retirement plans by the end of 2016, though a special rule allows those who reached 70 ½ in 2016 to wait until April 1, 2017 to receive them.

So, what else can be done to limit tax liabilities for individuals and businesses?

“Defer bonuses,” said Lisa Greene-Lewis, a

certified public accountant and Turbo Tax expert. “If your hard work paid off this year and you are expecting a yearend bonus, this extra money in your pocket may bump you up to another tax bracket and increase your tax liability,” she said.

Folasade Ayegbusi, a certified public accountant (CPA) and owner of Suncrest Financial Services in Maryland, advises business owners to call their payroll processing company and have them process a one-time annual salary amount to satisfy any S-Corp reasonable compensation requirement.

Also, she said, purchasing depreciable assets like a car, furniture, iPad, computer and other items needed for a business would help offset any tax burden.

Randy Hughes, founder of Counting Pennies, a nationwide tax and accounting firm that specializes in tax preparation, bookkeeping and debt management, said African-Americans need to immediately think about taxes and not wait until the April 15 deadline.

Hughes recommends making wise business purchases, maximizing health savings accounts and managing tax with-

holdings and exceptions.

“Employees that changed jobs or started a new job should review their tax withholdings and exemptions claimed on their new hire paperwork,” he said.

“Claiming too few exemptions could result in giving the government more money than necessary, which could result in a cash flow problem for you during the year.”

Perhaps as important as any suggestions, the IRS said it continues to see an uptick in tax scams – one of the most recent involved a caller telling a taxpayer that he or she is entitled to a large refund, but first must hand over a certain amount of money first.

“Taxpayers across the nation face a deluge of these aggressive phone scams,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said in a statement. “Don’t be fooled by callers pretending to be from the IRS in an attempt to steal your money.

We continue to say, ‘if you are surprised to be hearing from us, then you’re not hearing from us.’”

For African-Americans, filing income taxes has never been simple – nor has it historically been anything to look forward to.

“One thing that’s certain at the top of each year is tax season. Yes, that one thing that most of us dread yet we know we have a short window of time to complete what should be done as the new year begins,” said Cozette M. White, an acclaimed author, financial analyst and tax strategist. White is also founder and CEO of My Financial Home Enterprises, a financial management firm that helps organizations and entrepreneurs develop solutions that fuel business growth and transform products into accelerating profits.

White said it’s important to decide early on who will be preparing your returns.

“Tax preparers are the least trained, but the cheapest to hire,” she said, noting that enrolled agents are typically more competent than tax pre-

arlem News spoke exclusively with women who attended the Women’s March on Washington over the weekend. Here is what they shared.

Anahi Angelone, owner of Corner Social and Angel of Harlem organized a group called Harlem Heelz to make the trip. “We organized it. Tren’ness WoodsBlack (owner of Sylvia’s Restaurant), Nikoa Evans-Hendricks, and myself.

We organized buses to go from Harlem. We left early Saturday morning and got back very late Saturday evening.” Angelone returned inspired and focused to take the next steps, including getting more involved in local politics. At the forefront, she mentioned, was the Valentine’s Day election to fill the seat vacated by Inez Dickens.

Harlem resident Meredith Barnes discussed her inspiration to make the trip. “I’ve been waking up every morning and wondering if it’s really true that someone so self-centered,

thin-skinned, and casually vile about everyone that’s not him (including his own daughter) could possibly be our president. That genuinely good people with whom I’ve always differed on politics could surprise me by also differing so drastically with me on what qualifies on basic humanity…the march offered an opportunity to go and be with people who felt this way too. It doesn’t fix the shock, but it was a balm to be reminded that there are so many who are equally appalled by (the President’s) behavior, and who are not fooled by calls to “see what happens.” After all, isn’t a campaign literally telling the people what you’re going to do? It shouldn’t be a complete surprise, right? Call a spade a spade; we know what he’s going to do. Lie, insult, and tweet recklessly about sensitive international matters.”

Barnes discussed her journey to the march. “My boyfriend, an immigrant from Egypt, drove us down.

He’s as (upset) as I am about this whole situation, so it

was a fun trip. The larger vehicles have to be in lanes separately from the cars in certain areas, so the charter buses that lots of people had arranged for groups in NYC and points north kept driving by and he was teasing me for staring at them, just smiling. There were so many.”

Barnes shared her thoughts after the march. “I was struck by the joy. It took us 45 minutes just to get out of the subway station: even with all four escalators running upwards. But no one minded. We just chanted and complimented each other’s signs and everyone, everyone was smiling. The crowd was diverse, we chanted in English and Spanish, and we laughed. And we knew that if this is what the subway looked like, it (could not be ignored) once we got up to the surface. So there was this burbling excitement. It was the same on the Avenue.

Just people, everywhere, smiling at each other, holding incredibly clever and biting and true signs. It was so exciting. It’s hard to de-

scribe what it felt like to see it in person. I think all of us had been feeling similarly: sad, defeated, and betrayed.

And just by being there, we saw some hope. I don’t think I could’ve gotten that any other way.”

Harlem resident Marcela Barrientos shared her reasons for heading to DC. “As a Latina, I know the importance of representation in progressive movements/ spaces and I wanted to make sure that my narrative as an immigrant/someone who was once undocumented and a labor activist were present and part of this collective action.” Barrientos told us about her experience traveling to the march. “I was very fortunate to travel in a minivan full of organizers, labor activists, educators and artists who were also processing our new reality under the current administration.

While there was a degree of excitement to be able to physically and verbally express our discontent by attending the march, we know that the real work takes place day to day at our worksites,

neighborhoods, schools, etc.

So as we sat in the car lifted by the spirit of solidarity we were also grounded by the reality of the fight that we are up against.” She shared her thoughts following the march. “I think it’s important to process its significance but also remember that there is a lot of work to be done and that prior to the march there were already communities doing it, from Black Lives Matter to the Dreamers. I say this because we should not define our political radicalism as one march but instead take on the responsibility of acting in solidarity every day. It is these small acts of solidarity that add up and it is these acts that could have prevented us from witnessing and experiencing this administration.”

Finally, we spoke to one man, Harlem resident Stanley Fritz, who is a Communications Associate at Citizen Action of New York, which is located in Harlem.

“I attended the march because Donald Trump’s rhetoric has been dangerous,

hurtful and divisive. This country has consistently gone out of its way to bash women of color, particularly black women. I was at the march to stand up for all women, but specifically black and Latina women.”

Fritz traveled with a group called Harlem Heelz.

“They were amazing.

The organizers of Harlem Heels to Washington were: Tren’ness Woods-Black, LLC, Corner Social, Harlem Spirituals, Harlem Park to Park, Harlem Heels to Washington, and Alacrity Associates. I had a blast marching with these amazing women!”

Fritz discussed the aftermath of the march. “Now that the march is over, I feel like I’m ready to take the passion and energy from the event and put it to work. The first 100 days of the President’s administration are going to be an all-out attack on women’s reproductive rights, as well as our Latin and Muslim allies. I’m ready to fight.”

f you are serious about buying a home this year, then it is imperative that you establish an aggressive monthly savings goal to assist you in this process. The monthly household budget worksheet is the primary tool to use for tracking your monthly expenses. The monthly budget will also to help identify and eliminate wasteful spending.

Your goal as a prospective first time home buyer is to increase your savings as quickly as possible. Buying a home is a very expensive venture. Although as a first-time buyer you may be eligible for some of the grant programs, most the money required to complete the process must come from your bank accounts.

Consider most down pay-

ment amounts will range from 3-5% of the purchase price.

Again, this will depend primarily on what type of property you are looking to buy and on your pre-approval amount. If you are considering purchasing a cooperative unit designated as a Housing Development Fund Corporation building (HDFC), you may be to put down 20% of the purchase price.

So, it is understandable why having an adequate amount of the money for the down payment and closing costs remains the greatest challenge for low to moderate income first time buyers. How are you going to aggressively save about $15-20 thousand dollars while at the same time maintaining your monthly living expenses?

The answer is by creating a monthly household budget that will include a clearly defined savings goal. But here is the key to this process, you must have the discipline, dedication, and desire to stick to your budget. It will not be an easy.

To properly maintain and achieve your savings goal will require you to make some very difficult choices. You must have the strength to make some personal sacrifices. But stay focused on your dream of homeownership this year. You can make it happen.

hat a magical moment it was having the privilege to sneak peek at some musical numbers from this inspiring work of art that world premieres on January 28th. I felt the love and passion that led Kendrell Bowman and Anthony Wayne to write and direct this wonderful show. The multi-talented Jacqueline Arnold shines bright in this more than tragic life of an icon. Not to mention that Philanthropist, Author and Award Winning Actress

She takes the audience on an inspirational evening of joy and pain, through the life of this musical icon who suffered from bipolar depression and committed suicide by overdose in 1995 when she was only 45. In an exclusive interview I asked the writers, director and star of the play what moved and inspired them to do this show; why they believe it truly represents and does justice to both the great art-

Going deeper and deeper into her life I realized that she had some emotional and mental illness that were very serious for her. That struck a chord

in me …. several people in my life have suffered from it, I lost my best friend in 2003 for such thing…we all know people who are suffering somehow. The truth is, when you are in show business you tend to put up a front, but Phyllis could not hide it from us in the long run. If you were feeling down, listening to her made you feel that you had a friend that night. You had someone in your corner who really did understand you even if you could not ex-

press it yourself” Kendrell Bowman: “I have always been passionate about Phyllis Hyman, her music and her lyrics that tell real stories. I was drawn to her life because the more I learnt the more I saw what was going on behind the mask we put on for the public and understood how strong and independent a woman she was ..someone who was going through so much but still kept on going. I wanted to use her story to inspire other people, because I feel

the role of an artist is about inspiring and healing, not only entertaining. We must use the platform we have to educate other people and bring social issues to life…in a fun way”. As for giving advice to young artists, I actually just wrote a book “How to Produce a Show from Your Couch” that teaches aspiring producers how to go about it, step by step with practical examples of budgets and contracts. I wrote it because I wanted to share my experience, and maybe help others avoid the same mistakes that I made when I first started.”

Anthony Wayne: “When Kendrell and I were doing Mighty Real we loved listening to her music, it inspired us and we decided we should do a show about her too. As you may know, Sylvester’s story is about AIDS HIV and making people aware.

We definitely want to stir the same awareness about depression and mental illness.

I believe it is our responsibility, as artists, to use the

far-reaching power of music and let people know that they are not alone going through this situation. It is frilling to have this wonderful tool to be able to reach a large demographic and help people believe in themselves and their capacity to make things happen no matter what the circumstances.

Just like Kendrell and I … we created both our shows in our living room in Harlem on 139th st. We did not have a whole lot of money..just creativity, passion and drive.

We got together and made it happen. You can do it too we are just regular people.

That’s the message we want the audience to leave the show with. We can do it!!!”

W

hen I walked into the offices of Dane Real Estate to meet their President and Founder, Heidi Burkhart, there were several things that simultaneously came to my attention. The most important was the friendliness and the energy I felt when meeting her staff, Heidi herself and her dog named Debbie. The conversation was so enjoyable with Burkhart (a canine lover, thus the name of her firm) that it took us about 15 minutes to get into the actual interview, as we chatted like old friends despite never

even corresponding previously.

Harlem News asked Burkhart, an Ohio native, what inspired her to start her own real estate firm in her mid-20s. “I had friends push me in the business to start my own firm. And luckily I had a client that gave me free office space, Scott Jaffee at Metropolitan Realty Group, LLC, and to this day I cannot say thank you enough to him.”

The first deal that Burkhart ever closed was in Harlem on the southeast corner of 145th street and St. Nicholas Avenue, a T:4.92” building today that hous-

Burkhart was able to find her niche in the industry early in her career. “Real estate suited me and challenged me. Eventually, I found my niche in real estate when I discovered affordable housing. Real estate brokerage rewards people for their hard work. Affordable housing, in turn, helps people ‘afford’ homes, allowing them to create better lives for themselves.”

Some of the notables in attendance were former New York City Mayor David Dinkins, HEAF Board of Directors and Founder and Chair Emeritus Daniel Rose, HEAF staff members as well as HEAF students.

After the Q&A, Samuelsson spoke exclusively with Harlem News about his work with the Obamas. “I can’t thank the first family enough for having the opportunity

to cook the state dinner and having the opportunity to be around them for many occasions when they came to the restaurant or when I went down there to cook.” Samuelsson continued to praise the Obamas and their work from the White House. “Now it’s up to us to take all of that and really continue to do their work. I know we will see a lot of them in the future. I can’t thank them

enough for the inspiration, the initiatives, and the hard work.”

Black Agency Executives Honor Leaders Supporting New York’s Less Fortunate

n advocacy group that supports leaders of agencies and nonprofits that help the homeless and mentally ill honored its own The Black Agency Executives hosted its 40th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Jan. 17 at the Hilton in Midtown, where they recognized the leaders among their ranks who exemplified Dr. King’s dream.

In front of an audience that included Mayor David Dinkins, Richard

Brown, vice president of philanthropy for American Express and former Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, honoree Pat A. Swann, the senior program officer for New York Community Trust, was lauded for her work in managing nearly $100 million over the course of 16 years for community development projects.

“I know it comes from people who know me, who know my work, and understand the work that we do,”

Swann said as she accepted her award.

“This recognition means so much to me and I mean it from the bottom of my heart.”

The Black Agency Executives is dedicated to supporting and empowering human services executives of color in management, development, growth and networking.

“It you’re anything like me, it’s been hard to look away from the news channels and not fear what’s in store for the marginal-

ized people of color, what’s in store for women,” BAE president Dr. Danielle Moss Lee said. “As long as I know that they (Black Agency Executives) are on the case, I know they will be okay.”

The elegant affair included a cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres followed by the program and a dinner of filet mignon, potato pancakes and string beans.

The event was hosted during the week President Donald Trump took office, a subject that

was on the mind of many at the gala, including emcee comedian Chuck Nice, who managed to make light of the incoming president’s term.

“There are those who think we might be in trouble when it comes to the advancement of people of color,” he said. “But we have gone from the first black president to the first orange president!”

hile each year millions in the U.S. are sickened during flu season, many can’t distinguish between symptoms of the seasonal strain of the flu, a cold and the “stomach flu.” Knowing the difference, and how to properly treat each virus, can speed recovery.

Similar Yet Different While cold symptoms come on slowly and are limited to the head and upper respiratory system, flu symptoms affect the whole body and come on quickly. Telltale signs of the flu are fever and body aches. However, these are also symptoms of stomach flu, which isn’t related to a flu virus at all. Common viruses that wreak havoc on the

digestive system include the norovirus and the rotavirus.

Ironically, an immune system weakened by seasonal flu can leave you vulnerable to these so-called stomach flu viruses.

ast week the Health Department, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and the Human Resources Administration announced that parents, guardians, and other individuals with IDNYC cards can go online to My Vaccine Record to access their own or their children’s official immunization records from the Citywide Immunization Registry.

Previously, immunization records were accessible to healthcare providers online, but the public needed to contact the Health Department and wait up to two weeks to get a record.

A person can access a child’s record only if his or her name is recorded in the registry as the child’s parent, guardian, next of kin or primary contact. Parents can use the record to see a list of vaccinations their child still needs. These records may also be used for child care and school registration, college admission, camp enrollment and more, but they do not replace the physical examination form required by schools.

“The Health Department’s new portal, My Vaccine Record, makes accessing immunization records easy and seamless for par-

ents and guardians with an IDNYC card,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “Now, parents and guardians can use the portal to see when their child will need her next shot and access her official immunization record to submit to colleges, schools, child care centers, camps and more.

“The launch of My Vaccine Record creates easy access to important information like immunization records using your

“IDNYC is not only the largest municipal ID program in the nation but also the most useful,” said Department of Social Services/ Human Resources Administration Commissioner Steve Banks. “Cardholders have a valid form of identification that allows them to take part in City programs and ser-

vices, including free membership to dozens of the most iconic New York cultural institutions, and now they can also access their own and their children’s immunization records. This new feature allows families to have critical health data at hand and reinforces the City’s commitment to make services more accessible for all New Yorkers.”

The Citywide Immunization Registry was launched in 1996 and contains about 6.4 million patient records. The New York City Health Code and New York State law require that healthcare providers report

immunizations given to everyone under 19 years of age. Most records are for individuals born in New York City after 1995. About 17 percent of New York City adults also have immunization records in the registry.

Only IDNYC cardholders can use My Vaccine Record to search for immunization records online at this time. IDNYC is a free government-issued identification card that is available to all New York City residents age 14 years and older, regardless of immigration status. IDNYC information will be used only to confirm the individual’s identity.

he main focus of the annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (HHWW) Celebration is to bring awareness to the many natural and holistic options that can address health and the improvement of the quality of

THE ADAMS REPORT© Looking Good Takes Time!

E

very morning I go through the same routine: the alarm clock goes off at 6am. I stay in bed until 7am, a full hour later than I intend to begin my day. What about the promise I made to myself: to rise at 6am, meditate from 6:15-6:30am, workout from 6:30 to 6:50am (I thought I would ease

into the day), to reserve 7-7:30am for showering, hair and makeup, have a leisurely breakfast from 7:35-8am (in my robe of course), and allot 8-8:30am to get dressed, because I planned to be in the office at 9am. I was going to be calm, buffed and drop dead gorgeous!

Even with a late start I had a good hour and a half. Doable, right?

Well, as my niece would say, NOT! Why isn’t my plan working? Let’s take another view of my admittedly flawed plan. I believe that had I done what my mama taught me as a child, my plan would work. Mama made us lay out the

clothes we were going to wear the next day the night before. I, of course grew up and did away with all that nonsense. How grown of me to do as I pleased!

Mom also set up the coffee pot and prepared the nonperishable parts of our school lunch bags the night before and would set the alarm for a full hour before we actually had to be up and about. She is a very smart mom! My plan isn’t working.

By the time I arose I was already behind the eight ball because I neglected to prepare.

I call it planning 101.

So in place of calmness there was chaos all around because I ended

up rushing just to get dressed and out of the house on time. And do you know what took an exorbitant amount of time? Getting dressed.

It took me 10 minutes to decide what to wear, and of course it had to be ironed, then I had to choose shoes, accessories, etc. Proud of myself, I put the chosen outfit on only to discover that it had outgrown me! The consequence was that I had to start over and I was guaranteed not to look as pulled together as I’d planned.

Why didn’t I just listen to my mom? I would have known that the outfit wasn’t going to work and had plenty

of time to choose another. I realized that by preparing the night before, I could have saved time and aggravation!

Now my alarm is set for 5am and I may not be getting to everything that I wanted to do before work, but I’m meditating and before I know it I’ll be doing those sit-ups! Well, that’s the plan anyway.

Which brings to mind another thing I need to do, clean my closet.

We’ll talk about that later. Remember, if you want to look good . . . you need time. See you next week.

As of January 20, according to Organizing for Action, over 600,000 volunteers from 25 states and all walks of life have signed the Organizing for Action – OFA petition to help save ACA or Obamacare as we know it. Why is it critical we all get involved?

Let’s recap some of the greatest “hits” before Obamacare: what had happened was…the insurance companies could charge what they wanted or choose not to cover someone with a pre-existing condition, such as chronic disease or disability.

Non-coverage for maternity was common practice, with only 12% of individual health plans counting maternity as a benefit. [Source: healthcare.org, Ref: National Women’s Law Center]. Capping coverage on prescriptions and hospitalizations was probably one of the biggest hits --because once the annual limit was reached, people had to pay all accompanying health
