This past Monday we celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. The National Action Network held its annual King Day Celebration with Rev. Sharpton, as well as political speakers from all areas of New York, including Mayor DeBlasio.

Injustices existing today in the black community, as well as needed policies was the consistent theme. (see pg 3). On page 12 of this issue we hear from Dr King's daughter, Rev. Bernice King as she reflects on her experience with her father and her opinion of what he would think of what is going on these days. (see pg 12) In this issue I offer an Opinion Editorial regarding Presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg. I do not normally use the pages of Harlem News to get involved in politics.

He said we would never achieve justice if we were in the midst of war. He said you could not have justice while a war was going on.

Dr. King was right! Now we find ourselves in a new reality. A war with Iran would mean the endless wars would go on for generations. That would foreclose any possibility of the justice we see in our own nation. Dr. King in, that Beyond Vietnam speech, he said a simple thing, ‘A time comes when silence is betrayal.’ We cannot be silent on the growing march to war in Iran. We cannot be silent to the fact that there are some in Washington who would like to see us in these endless wars!”

n the frigid afternoon of January 20th, 2020, Harlemites, black folk and seekers of Justice gathered at the National Action Network’s House of Justice, on 145th street for the annual King Day Celebration, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Reverend Al Sharpton started the day with the annual King Day breakfast in Washington D.C, and returned to Harlem, to speak to the crowd at the National Action Network where he was joined by a number of public officials. While Dr. King’s legacy was the theme of the day, injustices in the Black community were on the minds of many.

Rev. Sharpton did not hesitate to point out President Donald Trump’s obvious disrespect for Dr. King saying “There is no public schedule for the president of the United States to do anything around Dr. King... Right now, they’re having a pro-gun march in Virginia. Extremists have been arrested. We cannot afford, in the name of Dr. King, them pitting us against each other. We can achieve this dream… That is why, on King Day, we bring our public officials here to talk about policy and how we’re going to be together!”

Rev. Sharpton pointed out that embracing the legacy of Dr. King, meant equality and justice for everyone in America, encouraging civil rights for everyone. There were rousing and stirring words by many of the public officials in at-

In Honoring King’s Legacy, We Must Commit to The Work That Cost Him His Life

wo years before his death, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King wrote that “there is no way merely to find work, or adequate housing, or quality-integrated schools for Negroes alone.” We could only achieve these goals, he said, by pursuing them for all people — regardless of their race, gender, class or creed.

Dr. King’s belief in universal programs as the key to our nation’s shared prosperity has long been central to the African American tradition. For centuries, Black men and women have struggled to guarantee human rights and economic security–not just for themselves, but for everyone. Their perseverance in this universal cause has resulted in the greatest strides towards progress that this country has ever made.

For example, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished chattel slavery, established equal protection under the law, and protected the right to vote, benefited people of all races.

Reconstruction, which created public schools in the South and advanced the interests of poor farmers, benefited people of all races. And the Civil Rights Movement, which brought an end to the Jim Crow era, benefited people of all races.

Even accomplishments that we do not associate exclusively with civil rights and racial justice would not have been realized without Black leadership and struggle. Social Security and Medicare, key pillars of our safety net, were won by working-class movements in which African Americans

played a central role. Millions upon millions of elderly people have been rescued from poverty thanks to their efforts.

The elites who would rather see us divided have tried to limit these victories every step of the way. At times, like during the early Jim Crow years, they resorted to open violence, hoping to terrorize us into submission. More recently they have relied on the less visible but no less real violence of budget cuts and austerity. But because of the overwhelming popularity of policies in which everyone has a stake, they have not been able to do away with these hard-earned achievements for good.

This history provides a lesson: rather than adopting a narrow focus on the differences between us, the best way to advance the age-old struggle for racial justice and freedom is through universality.

African Americans are 50% more likely than our white sisters and brothers to be uninsured. This together with the stresses of economic hardship leaves us with worse health outcomes by almost any measure.

We suffer from higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and maternal mortality. The only way out of this public health crisis is through a Medicare for All system that provides every single person with access to the kind of care that the rich take for

granted as their birthright.

We are 25% less likely to graduate from college yet have more student debt than anyone else. Black women like myself are the most indebted of all. I have served as a City Councilwoman and a State Senator and like millions of others still have monthly student loan payments. Free public higher education and the cancellation of student debt would enable millions of African Americans to get the education they want but currently cannot afford.

We are twice as likely to be unemployed, and the jobs we do have are more likely to pay starvation wages. This is the reason why the poverty rate among African Americans is so much higher than the national average.

There is no better anti-poverty program than a federal jobs guarantee and labor laws that make it easier to unionize.

A Green New Deal would make desperately needed investments in our communities and go a long way towards addressing the environmental racism African Americans in urban and rural areas alike endure. A national housing program would benefit African Americans who, because of the history of redlining and segregation, are disproportionately renters, living month to month at the whims of predatory landlords and forces of gentrification.

Should I Be Worried About That Condensation on My Windows?

f you take a look at your home’s windows and doors in winter, you may notice condensation.

As temperatures drop, it often appears on the inside and outside of these surfaces.

Here’s what you need to know about why condensation occurs, when it matters and what you can do about it: Interior Condensation When the heat is on inside the home in wintertime, a certain amount of humidity feels good -- we breathe easier, our skin is less dry and there’s less static in the air. This is fine usually, but when temperatures outside get extremely low, problems can arise. Under these circumstances, humidity can generate condensation

on your windows -- whether they’re old or new -- and this should be managed.

While there’s no problem with condensation on the window glass itself, (except for the fact that visibility can be obscured) that condensation could affect wood trim around the windows and lead to mold and rot. Perhaps even worse, it could be an indicator that condensation is also occurring within your walls, which can lead to unhealthy mold.

Unfortunately, the most common sources of home humidity are everyday parts of life, including showers, cooking, doing laundry and even fish tanks. However, if you see condensation on your windows there are two actions that experts recommend. One, if you have a humidifier, turn it down.

The second, use a dehumid-

Exterior Condensation Exterior condensation occurs when the dew point temperature approaches the outside air temperature.

When the air is saturated and can’t hold any more moisture, water vapor forms droplets on surfaces -- including your roof, siding, windows and doors.

If you have energy-efficient windows, you may notice exterior condensation occur more than you did when you had older, less energy-efficient windows that allowed warmth from inside the home to reach the outside glass pane and dissipate the condensation. Unlike with interior condensation, there’s nothing to worry about in the case of exterior condensation. Moisture on the outside pane of glass is normal and a good sign

that your windows are functioning correctly to prevent warmth from reaching the outside glass. The condensation will dissipate when the outside air temperature rises.

Next Steps If there’s no condensation on the exterior of your

windows but there’s moisture on adjacent exterior surfaces, this would be a good indicator that it’s time for new windows. Also, if you get constant internal condensation on your windows in very cold weather and your humidity is low, then upgrading to a more

thermally efficient window would be a good idea.

Look for high-performing replacement windows with the latest technological advances that offer maximum efficiency and comfort. Third-party recognition for a particular brand or product is a strong indicator that you’re investing in a quality product. A recent “Remodeling” magazine survey of remodeling contractors ranked ProVia vinyl windows as number one in window quality in part because of their features that are tested against the most stringent requirements for air and water infiltration.

This winter, pay attention to your home windows, glass doors and other surfaces. Understanding the ins and outs of interior and exterior condensation can help you address potential issues.

Renewing Martin Luther King’s Dream by Renewing Our Minds

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” a scripture reading from Romans 12:2.

ransformation is something the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. was in pursuit of. He was seeking to fulfill his God given dream to help lead all people to the promise land of true brotherhood. On this national holiday we observe the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., a drum major who followed the drumbeat of a different drum.

He did not follow the world’s cadence of anger, discord and violence but chose to operate in the unforced rhythm of God’s grace to take a stand against racism, militarism, injustice and poverty. He sought to serve others in his quest to achieve equality in civil and economic rights for Black Americans, along with a demand for criminal justice reforms.

In 1963, I remember as a child sitting at home in Hagerstown, Maryland with my mother and grandmother in our living room watching a network news report on the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice. The report showed Dr. King delivering what would become a speech literally heard around the world and echoed throughout history, “I 12

It was a dream that set into motion the transformation of race relations in America.

Dr. King’s leadership in the non-violent struggle for civil rights earned him the distinction of being called a “drum major for justice, a drum major for peace.”

But to his four children, he was simply known as “daddy.”

Dr. King was mindful of his children when he delivered his famous address, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Dr. King’s youngest child, Bernice King, has followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming an ordained minister and continues his legacy.

She believes that her dad’s dream for his children to be judged by the content of their character has, in many ways, become a reality. She says, “new generations of people have benefited greatly because of the dream but we still have more work to do.”

King recently talked to me about her reflections of her father.

contribution to the world, she explained, is a result of his extraordinary faith in God. As I talked with her, she told me that everything her daddy did, came out of his personal commitment to Jesus Christ.

King recalls how her dad’s deep faith helped him overcome the pressures from leading the non-violent struggle for Civil Rights, particularly when the burden became too heavy to bear: “I remember in the beginning when he was about to give

up because he got a call that threatened to blow up his home where my mom and my sister were. He was in the kitchen and just before midnight, he told God; I’m at the end of my powers. I’m just down here trying to do right. Why do I have to deal with all of these evil and wicked people? Why are people so mean-spirited?

Why can’t people understand goodness and the good works we’re trying to do? Why is there so much hate?”

King continued that her dad had grown

weary and felt he could not continue; he was at the end of his rope. She explained to me; “It was at that point that he said he heard the voice of God say; “Martin Luther King, Junior! Stand up for justice! Stand up for righteousness!

And I will be with you until the end.”

Of her daddy’s accomplishments, Bernice humbly says, “It’s emotional to know that you’re connected to a man who had such a great impact on this world. It’s a humbling experience to know

that he’s my dad.”

Dr. King, a dedicated Baptist minister with brilliant oratory skills, the academic prowess of a scholar, and the wisdom of a prophet, faithfully and courageously challenged America to embrace his dream of a better, stronger and united America. I asked Bernice how we have gone astray in fulfilling that dream.

“It goes back to economics and spirituality. Those two issues I think are very critical.

And the whole fervor of materialism in our

MLK society and self-centeredness has taken us away. And so, instead of people focusing on God first and everything else next, we’ve reversed those priorities. So, our values and our priorities are off.”

She adds; “Daddy talked about this in 1967. He forewarned that if we’re not careful, we will become a “thing” oriented society and not “people centered” and all of these different crises are going to emerge.

And that’s what’s been happening.”

In 1963, as he sat in a Birmingham jail, he wrote about becoming an extremist to deal with the extreme issues of hate and division.

His daughter says, “One of the most important traits in unconditional love is the capacity to forgive.

It’s very easy to become bitter. It’s very easy to become angry.

It’s very easy to want to take revenge or retaliation. We must have the capacity to have the mentality that says by destroying them; part of me is being destroyed because they’re part of my humanity.

“My dad lost his life but look at what the world has gained.

Even though he didn’t make it to see that

Promised Land he talked about and everybody hasn’t made it to this Promised Land he talked about but there are people that are benefiting from the life and ultimate sacrifice that he

made.”

Reflecting on King’s legacy, we would serve ourselves well if we could follow his example of spiritual depth, courageous leadership and unselfish service. Like King,

we must seek transformation by the renewing of our minds. Let us remember that Dr. King did not conform to the culture of hate but followed the pattern of love. He said; “I have decided to

stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” Let’s continue the King dream and legacy by boldly and courageously spreading God’s love, freedom and peace.

Are You Ready for College Entrance Exams?

hile a student’s long record of academic achievement is generally the most important measure that colleges take under consideration during the admissions process, getting as prepared for one’s college entrance exams as possible is a great idea.

Here are a few things to know going into the process: • Almost all four-year institutions of higher learning require that candidates submit either SAT or ACT scores with some requiring strictly one or the other.

Certain selective schools also require SAT Subject Tests and AP Tests. Check which tests you’ll need to take to apply to your

schools of choice. You may also want to check the average scores of last year’s incoming freshmen.

• Find out whether the schools to which you are applying look at the score of every test you take or only your top score. If they look at every score, you may want to avoid taking the test until you’re feeling completely confident.

If they look at only the top score, consider taking the test multiple times (if money and time allow) until you get the score with which you’re satisfied.

• Each institution weighs scores a bit differently.

Some colleges use entrance exam scores in order to place incoming freshmen in classes. Some schools use the scores to award scholar-

ships. Understanding what the scores are used to determine, can help you get motivated to succeed.

• When it comes to the mathematics portion of the exam, it’s important to know that graphing and scientific calculators are allowed. Calculators for College Boards available from Casio offer an affordable solution to aid in the preparation for college entrance exams. Whatever calculator students choose to use for their exams they should familiarize themselves with completely so that come exam day, they can easily manipulate its features and functions. To that end, students should use the calculator when taking practice tests and consider using it in the

classroom and when doing homework.

• Testing rules and format have evolved over time. Be sure any preparation materials you use are current so that they deliver accurate information about what to expect and reflect

the kind of questions you’ll actually face on test day.

• Your practice tests should resemble the real test day as much as possible, so have handy only tools which are allowed in the testing facility, putting away any other reference

materials or distractions.

While the process of preparing for and taking college entrance exams can be nerve-wracking, sufficient preparation and the right tools can give you the confidence you need to be successful on test day.

Go Ahead - Take a Nap! (SPM Wire) Americans are notoriously sleep-deprived, which can have unpleasant and even dangerous effects. And while a nap can alleviate fatigue, increase alertness and improve mood, for years napping was considered to be a pastime more appropriate for little children and the sick than healthy adults.

But the tides are changing. National Sleep Foundation encourages napping, citing improvements in

alertness, performance and mood as benefits. So here are a few tips on getting the most out of your daytime snooze: Find a comfortable spot. A bed is the best, but is not always available. If napping in a chair or on a couch, make sure your neck is well-supported to avoid sore muscles.

Use a sleep mask and earplugs. Sometimes disconnecting from your surroundings can be difficult, even when you’re tired.

Cutting out noise and light can help.

Use a nap as a caffeine substitute. If you find yourself reaching for coffee because you can’t stay awake, consider taking a nap instead. Close your eyes and get some shut-eye -- it will help relieve tiredness instead of postponing it until the caffeine wears off.

But remember to keep your naps to a maximum of 20 to 30 minutes, lest they interfere with a much-needed good night’s rest!

hen walking up the stairs and playing golf started to become difficult even on a good day, retired Navy Captain Allen Brady attributed the change to aging. Having spent six years as a prisoner of war, Brady was no stranger to living with a challenge. But, when he couldn’t finish a round of golf without feeling fatigued and short of breath, he and his wife knew something was wrong and decided to visit a cardiologist.

Brady was diagnosed with a severe form of aortic stenosis, the most common valvular heart disease affecting an estimated 1.5 million Americans.

Brady is among the 7 percent of people over the age of 65 affected by this condition. Aortic stenosis is characterized by significant narrowing of the aortic valve opening, which restricts blood flow and is often accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, pressure or tightness, fatigue, feeling

lightheaded or dizzy, and difficulty when exercising or completing day-to-day activities. If left untreated, it can eventually lead to heart failure, severe infection and even sudden death.

While historically, the only treatment option available to patients involved valve replacement via open-heart surgery, a less invasive procedure called transcatheter aortic valve

replacement (TAVR) has become a more mainstream solution for those who are too sick to undergo traditional surgery. Patients who have a TAVR procedure typically experience a faster recovery time and less discomfort.

“At 89 years old, I was very concerned about any kind of heart surgery,” Brady explained “But my doctor reassured me that

my age would not be a problem, and I knew I had to take action if I wanted to get back to my life.”

Dr. Christopher Meduri of Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta recommended that Brady undergo TAVR with the Boston Scientific LOTUS Edge Aortic Valve System. This next-generation TAVR technology was recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Ad-

ministration for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at high risk for open heart surgery.

“Complete control over the procedure and confidence in the final result are incredibly important. We’ve had very good results with this new technology and it offers a minimally invasive, patient-centered treatment for those with aortic stenosis wanting to get back to

their life as quickly as possible,” says Dr. Meduri.

Thanks to the valve’s design that makes it uniquely repositionable during TAVR, physicians can precisely place the new valve into an optimal position within the heart to restore proper valve function. And because not everyone’s aortic valve is the same size, the device is designed to conform to the patient, which minimizes any leakage of blood around the outside of the valve that could lead to future complications.

“I feel like I have a new lease on life,” says Brady, now 90. “With my heart in good health, I have so much energy to do the things I’ve always loved, like golfing and spending time outdoors with my wife. I’m so grateful for the peace of mind this procedure has given me.”

The Queen of Commerce

Q

ueen Hatshepsut ruled ancient Kemet (Egypt) from 1479 to 1458 BC; and was the longest reigning female pharaoh in history. Egyptologist James Henry Breasted considered Queen Hatshepsut to be the first great woman in history. During her 21year reign Queen Hatshepsut used commerce as a way to raise consciousness and a spiritual path towards self-realization.

Under her reign Kemet became one of the wealthiest regions in the world.

Hatshepsut’s education and understanding of religion allowed her to establish herself as God’s Wife of Amun. Amun also known as Amun-Ra, creator of the universe and king of all gods. Under the queen, commerce became a spiritual gift to be used as a tool to build abundance, prosperity and peace.

A merchant priesthood was empowered to teach and utilize the queen’s concept of Sacred Commerce to connect commerce and spirituality. The focus of the Merchant Priest was to create abundance, prosperity and peace in Kemet

and neighboring nations; using the vision of the first queen of commerce.

The book Sacred Commerce: The Rise of the Global Citizen , written by Aymen Sawaf and Rowan Gabrielle, serves as a foundation for a movement focused on revitalizing Hatshepsut’s concept of reconnecting commerce and spirituality. This book has influenced how I have produced the annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (H2W), which runs from the last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in May. Two years ago, I introduced a Sacred Commerce natural wellness expo concept to the event. This seemed to be an opportu-

nity to show a connection between commerce and spirituality. You cannot separate true natural healing from spirituality. A foundation in the teachings of the merchant priest was the spiritual value of creating abundance by helping others.

A few wellness practitioners and individuals who attended the 2019 Sacred Commerce Expo came together to form a H2W planning committee to coordinate this year’s H2W which starts on Saturday April 25th and runs to Saturday May 2nd Plans are underway to hold a two-day H2W Sacred Commerce Expo at The City College of New

York this year. Thirty (30) wellness practitioners and businesses will be selected to participate in this twoday event (Saturday April 25th and Sunday April 26), kicking off the start of H2W 2020 The H2W committee will host a planning meeting for wellness practitioners, businesses and organizations interested in participating in the Sacred Commerce Expo or other events during H2W 2020 on Monday January 27th at Touro College located at 231 West 124th Street in room 238. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM. It is a blessing to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps and

teachings of the Merchant Priesthood and bring awareness to Queen Hatshepsut’s vision of using commerce as a spiritual tool for the creation of abundance and prosperity.

T

he mailman’s come and gone for today.

He never brings you much anymore anyhow, just a few bills and a card sometimes; now and then, you might get a box of something you purchased and that’s always fun. You know, though, that the mailman doesn’t always bring you what you ordered. As in “Delivered

by Midwives” by Jenny M. Luke, someone else brings a different kind of package.

At the turn of the last century, if you were an African American woman and you were pregnant, you might have struggled with more than just labor: white doctors simply didn’t have to treat Black patients if they didn’t want to.

Because of this, “many African American women in the Jim Crow South had no expectation of medical care for pregnancy and childbirth.”

And so, as did their foremothers when they were slaves, laboring women relied on “granny midwives” to “catch” their babies. Doing so was a natural conclusion, says Luke, since both men and women in early Black communities were “authorized to be healers,” which was “a power that the white medical establishment could not undermine.”

What the white establishment could do, however, was to point out the high rate of maternal and infant death in Black communities. Because

of this, laws were made in the 1920s to regulate midwives of all races. Classes on hygiene and cleanliness were taught to help improve the health of the most poverty-stricken mothers and their families, and joining a “midwife club” was mandatory.

As World War II began, however, so did the perception that not calling a doctor for a baby’s birth indicated “an indifferent negligence toward” the child. Black mothers still reached out to midwives but it was increasingly becoming “a marker of status” and more “’scientific’” to have a hospital birth.

By 1970, and though racism persisted and “hospital care and medical expertise were… not expectations of African

Americans...” nine out of ten Black women delivered their babies in hospitals.

The tide is turning back again, says author Jenny M. Luke, but there are issues – specifically, educational requirements for professional midwives have become steeper, which can lead to questions of affordability. Still, in “Delivered by Midwives,” she shows a continued need for midwives, especially in poorer communities – though getting to that point here can sometimes feel a lot like labor.

Luke moves her history at a good pace before repetition forces everything to slow down, then it speeds up again, so things move quickly inside this book – and then they

don’t. We’re treated to painful, wincing tales of past midwives and what their patients endured, and those things might make you scream before you hurry-up-and-wait for relevant-but-scholarly information that slows the process down. It ends in a somewhat-frazzling, acronym-laden whoosh.

That doesn’t make this a bad book – it makes this informative and interesting, good for students and prospective midwives, but not a curl-up-by-the-fire something to read. Still, if it’s the kind of medical, African American, or feminist history you’re looking for, “Delivered by Midwife” is the total package.
