This past weekend we celebrated the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

There were celebrations throughout the city. This past Saturday, Rev Al Sharpton led a march in Washington DC sending a message to the incoming president - “We Shall Not Be Moved.” (see page 11) On January 16th Rev Sharpton celebrated MLK Holiday with a ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of the new Spectrum, Learning Lab at the National Action Network location on 145th Street in Harlem. (see page 14) Dr. Ben Chavis, president of the NNPA (an association of black-owned newspapers) reflects on Dr. Martin Luther Kings’ legacy for Black America in 2017. (see page 3)

MLK’S LEGACY FOR BLACK AMERICA IN 2017 Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) prophetically stood strong for freedom, justice, and equality for Black Americans and for all people who cried out for a better quality of life throughout the world.

Dr. King was more than one of the greatest orators and preachers of the 20th century. He was one of the most effective intellectual

justice for all through nonviolent social change and transformation.

As a young teenage staff worker for SCLC in North Carolina in the early 1960s, I witnessed firsthand how Martin Luther King, Jr. would stir the consciousness of the masses. We overcame the fear of standing up for righteousness in the presence of evil powers

As we witness the transfer of presidential power from President Barack H. Obama to President Donald J. Trump, it is quite appropriate to apply some of the long-lasting and enduring tenets of Martin Luther King’s leadership, teachings, and perspectives.

Dr. King and the Southern

theologians whose moral genius and courage helped irreversibly to change the course of American history for civil and human rights.

No man or woman is perfect. Yet Dr. King’s leadership inspired and motivated millions of Black Americans and others to strive toward the perfection equal

and unjust systems of oppression and suppression.

Legacy is about establishing in one’s life and work, that which will endure and last for generations to come. Dr. King’s life and work exemplified intellectual honesty, activism, and courage. At a time when the misguided phenomena

Dr. King emphasized that when society appears polarized and deeply divided, we must strive to overcome divisiveness and hopelessness.

Thus, what may appear to some to be a “dark” hour is in fact a God-given time to reassert that justice and freedom are still possible and very probable if we unify, organize, mobilize, and speak truth to power. We cannot afford to engage in the cynicism that is now popular.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s living legacy beacons us to not give in to hopelessness and self-defeatism.

We have had difficult times before and each generation is called to stand up with the principles, values, and commitments that we have inherited from so many of our sisters and brothers who sacrificed for us to be where we are today.

King stated, “Now, what does all of this mean in this great period of history? It means that we’ve got to stay together. We’ve got to stay together and maintain unity.” While race is still a defining factor in American society, we must not allow racial discrimination or racism in any form to divide us or to prevent us from moving forward as families and communities steadfast in our unified actions to improve our quality of life.

Black America will overcome. We have come too far to stand still or go backwards.

While downtown NYC Restaurant Week features pre-fixe specials with price tags of up to $42, restaurants along East 125th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem are “keeping it local” with an “Uptown Restaurant Week” that features affordable menu items from local small business owners.

Uptown Restaurant Week runs from Monday, January 23, to Friday, February 10.

“More than 80 percent of our small businesses are African-American or Caribbean-owned,” said Marlyn Rogers, a native of Guyana who founded Sister’s Cuisine on East 124th Street more than 20 years ago. “We want to highlight that fact, plus draw attention to items on the menu that people may have not tried before.”

Along with pepper steak and jerk chicken, Uptown Restaurant Week will also shine a spotlight on the number of vegetar-

ian options that exist in the neighborhood. Rooted in the Ital traditions of the Caribbean, both Jahlookova Natural Organic Health Mart and Uptown Veg & Juice Bar have strong followings of people who travel for miles for their vegetarian patties and extensive vegan buffet. “People say you can’t eat healthy in Harlem,” said Uptown Veg founder Davie Simmons, “but we’ve been here feeding families for two decades now.”

Home to both the famous National Black Theatre and the new Caribbean Cultural Center, the neighborhood has a strong cultural history that also includes La Marqueta, the public market under the train tracks along Park Avenue where generations of African-American, Caribbean, Hispanic, Italian and Greek shoppers from across East Harlem once bought their fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. MORAL COURAGE IS STANDING UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT

On Wednesday, January 11, Senator Cory A. Booker (D-NJ) and Representative John Lewis (D-GA) joined the list of speakers testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee against the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions (RAL) for Attorney General of the United States. Both were assigned to a panel at the very end of the hearing process, a slot fellow panelist Representative Cedric L. Richmond (D-LA), the head of the Congressional Black Caucus, called “the equivalent of being made to go to the back of the bus.” Several Senate committee members who have publically-supported Senator Sessions left before Senator Booker’s and Representative Lewis’ important testimony began. But that didn’t deter them from speaking out against the threat they see to the civil rights progress our nation has made if Senator Sessions becomes Attorney General.

Congressman Lewis noted that he was born in rural Alabama too, not far from where Senator Sessions grew up, but as a Black child he inherited a far different society: “There was no way to escape or deny the choke hold of discrimination and racial hate that surrounded us.” He said, “A clear majority of Americans say they want this to be a fair, just, and open nation…

They are concerned that some leaders reject decades of progress and want to return to the dark past, when the power of law was used to deny the freedoms protected by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and its Amendments. These are the voices I represent today. We can pretend that the law is blind. We can pretend that it is even-handed. But if we are honest with ourselves, we know that we are called upon daily by the people we represent to help them deal with unfairness in how the law is written and enforced. Those who are committed to equal justice in our society wonder whether Senator Sessions’ call for ‘law and order’ will mean today what it meant in Alabama, when I was coming up back then. The rule of law was used to violate the human and civil rights of the poor, the dispossessed, people of color.”

In additional written remarks, Congressman Lewis was even clearer about some of his current fears: “Some people argue that the 48 years of a fully-operational Voting Rights Act simply erased hundreds of years of hate and violence.

This is not ancient history; the scars and stains of racism are still deeply embedded in our society. This is proven by the thousands of pages of evidence submitted to Congress which verify continued voting rights discrimination across our nation and in the Deep South. Representing Alabama on this Committee, Senator Sessions had an opportunity to lead. Instead, the Senator turned a blind eye to the persistent and consistent efforts to make it harder and more difficult for minorities, the poor, the elderly, and others to exercise the right to vote…after the Shelby v. Holder decision [the 2013 Supreme Court decision striking down key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act], minorities were in mourning as Senator Sessions was celebrating. He declared the decision was ‘good news for the South.’

Alabama and other states immediately adopted voter ID legislation — making it harder for minorities to execute their right to vote. We must face the truth. We are a multi-racial, multi-ethnic country…[a]nd we cannot avoid the

fact that there is a systematic, deliberate attempt to destroy the advances of civil rights in this country and take us back to a period when America declared its greatness on one hand, but fostered the worst kind of racial discrimination on the other.”

Senator Booker, born after the Civil Rights Movement, made it clear that he feels personally indebted to heroes like John Lewis who were attacked and some even killed during the struggle to make America a more just nation — and equally resolute against moving backwards. He took the courageous step of being the first sitting Senator to testify against the confirmation of another Senator. In his prepared remarks he said, “I want an Attorney General who is committed to supporting law enforcement and securing law and order.

But that is not enough. America was founded heralding not law and order, but justice for all. And critical to that is equal justice under the law. Law and order without justice is unobtainable . . . If there is no justice, there is no peace.

The Alabama State Troopers on the Edmund Pettis Bridge were seeking law and order. The marchers were seeking justice — and ultimately the greater peace.”

Senator Booker added: “If confirmed, Senator Sessions will be required to pursue justice for women, but his record indicates that he won’t. He will be expected to defend the equal rights of gay and lesbian Americans, but his record indicates that he won’t.

He will be expected to defend voting rights, but his record indicates that he won’t. He will be expected to defend the rights of immigrants and affirm their human dignity, but his record indicates he won’t. His record indicates that as Attorney General he would obstruct the growing national bipartisan movement toward criminal justice reform. His record indicates that we cannot count on him to support state and national efforts toward bringing justice to a justice system that people on both sides of the aisle readily admit is biased against the poor, drug addicted, mentally ill, and people of color. His record indicates

that at a time when even the FBI director is speaking out about implicit racial bias in policing and the need to address it; at a time when the last two Attorneys General have taken steps to fix our broken criminal justice system; and at a time when the Justice Department he would lead has uncovered systemic abuses in police departments all over the United States including Ferguson, including Newark; Senator Sessions would not continue to lead urgently needed change . . . Challenges of race in America cannot be addressed if we refuse to confront them. Persistent biases cannot be defeated unless we combat them. The arc of the universe does not just naturally curve toward justice — we must bend it.”

I’m deeply grateful to Senator Booker and Congressman Lewis for their extraordinary testimony and moral leadership. At the end of his statement Congressman Lewis said, “Leadership is not easy. You are expected to make tough decisions — to do what is right, what is just, and what is fair for all the people of this nation who rely on you to speak up and speak out on their behalf.”

They spoke on behalf of the majority, millions of Americans, who are afraid of a new onslaught of attempts to push the arc of our nation away from justice — and seek leaders vigilant and determined to keep fighting every step of the way to make America a better and fairer nation. As we prepare to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day we all should find the courage to honor him by standing up for what is right to stop a Senator who has fought against racial justice over a lifetime from becoming the nation’s chief law enforcement voice. That’s like putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop.

Jan 12 7:30 and 9:30pm King Solomon Hicks, guitarist and singer, is known as “King Solomon,” “’lil B.B.,” and “East Montgomery.”

He excels at styles from jazz, blues, classical, gospel, R&B, funk and classic rock. He has studied jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban guitar at Harlem’s School of the Arts and the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts and has attended Jazzmobile and Barry Harris’ workshops.

Solomon started performing at Harlem’s historic New Amsterdam Musical Association and on Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater. His biggest gigs include performances at the United Nations, the 2009 U.S. Open, MetLife Stadium and Madison Square Garden. A year after joining the Cotton Club All Stars as lead guitarist at age 13, Solomon recorded his first album, Embryonic.

Walter Thompson’s Differenter Committee chose Solomon as one of their “Innovators of Change” in 2012, filming him for a documentary on New York’s most accomplished and creative African-American citizens. career and story to share.

He began his career as a New Orleans street singer and recorded many old songs of the blues tradition while also creating an original vision by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. He’s performed, recorded and toured with many top names such as BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, R.L.Burnside, Ali Farka Toure, Dave Mattews Band, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco and Natalie Merchant. Harris was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese film Feel Like Going Home, tracing the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. He was also awarded a MacArthur Fellowship genius award.

The exhibit includes an view of framed sheet music with colorful images and other historic documents that reflect a story of collaborations between Harlem’s black and Jewish composers, performers, and music publishers between 1890 and the 1930s, including music performed by the Jewish singers Sophie Tucker and Belle Baker and written by black composers including Bert Williams, Eubie Blake, W. C. Handy and Charles Luckeyth (Luckey) Roberts.

The works of African-American popular composers, including Ernest Hogan, Bob Cole, James Reese Europe, and Will Marion Cook are placed alongside Jewish and Yiddish musicians active in song and musical theater. Reddick himself sees all this as stimulus for discussion and understanding, echoing a central Community Works theme to use arts for bridging differences.

The harlem is… Music exhibit includes timelines and panels that reflect 21 institutions and legacy keepers, including jazz clubs and legendary individuals. Indeed, this exhibit will follow a year-long celebration of Harlem as an influence on city culture from its earliest days.

In the Gallery an important new exploration will focus on Harlem’s Black and Jewish

Music Culture (1890-1930) with never before seen archival materials and documents.

Gallery tours and public dialogues will accompany the exhibition, and visitors can even sing along with Irving Berlin or Eubie Blake and rediscover the influences of James Reese Europe, American rag time and early jazz band leader, arranger and composer, on George Gershwin, American composer and pianist, and Bert Williams, one of the preeminent entertainers of the Vaudeville era.

I have two daughters and I said to myself there’s nothing more valuable for my life than to do this story justice.

Why do you think it took so long for a story like this to be told?

Sometimes these stories get pushed to the side because they’re not sexy at the time or you need the right environment to bring it to light. We’re in the right environment now for sure. The country needs to see a story about women achieving greatness and black women achieving greatness in math and science. We also need this movie we need the country to unite and stop dividing under racial pretenses or sexism. It’s just not working. The country needs a story about unity. I hope this movie

You have some powerful leading ladies help bring this story to life in Taraji P. Henson (Katherine Johnson), Octavia Spencer (Dorothy Vaughn) and Janelle Monáe (Mary Jackson). What made them the perfect cast for this film?

I’ve wanted to work with Taraji since I saw Benjamin Button. This woman can do Brad Pitt’s southern mother in Benjamin Button and then do Cookie on Empire. She has a wonderful range of emotion.

Katherine is quiet, sophisticated, but she has the spirit of Taraji, that quiet fighter. I thought she would nail it and she did. She blows me away every time I watch it.

What can I say about Octavia Spencer? There’s nothing she can’t do. I was so excited to work with her and when we started working I said ‘now

that’s the real deal’. She lifts those up around her which is who Dorothy Vaughn was.

Janelle Monáe is going to blow you away as Mary Jackson. Mary was the fighter.

She fought to get into NASA and become the first female engineer there of any color.

After 20 years she moved to HR, hacked into the system and found out women weren’t getting opportunities as fast or often as men. She changed the system and advanced women of all colors. And Janelle Monáe is like a fighter and a voice for everything that’s good. She’s the spunk.

What was your greatest challenge while co-writing this story and bringing it to life?

The greatest challenge was depicting the work life and the home life of these women. I didn’t want to make Apollo 13 again. I wanted

to make a movie about how three African American women traversed the civil rights landscape, and even more powerfully sexism in the workplace, and achieved tremendous success and put this man into space.

How did your Brooklyn upbringing shape your perspective on race and the need for equality?

In Brooklyn you don’t have time for racism. When you grow up in Brooklyn your neighborhood is a mix of everything. I walked to school with a Black guy, Puerto Rican Guy and a Russian guy every day. Not to say that there isn’t racism, but it’s such a melting pot where everyone needs each other. When you go outside of that you don’t have that population.

It seems like your upbringing was very similar to the

environment Spike Lee painted in ‘Do the Right Thing’.

Spike Lee is the reason is why I’m here. That’s the first movie I saw and said that I wanted to make a movie. I was so inspired by the story. Even the racism there, they’re all a family in some strange sort of way.

During this time of racial unrest and police violence, what is it about this film that you think will lift spirits and promote unity?

My biggest dream for what people take away from the film is that you look at it and go ‘there was a time in this country where black white, male female put everything aside and achieved something phenomenal.’ This country was founded on that principle.

People came to this country to stop being persecuted, so why are we persecuting black people? People came here to get away from that. I hope this movie shows the world that we are only gonna make it and achieve greatness together.

Nothing divided stands, that’s common sense. I’m hoping that this movie is that. It’s a very inspiring movie.

Lastly, why do you think people should come out and see Hidden Figures?

You need to come see this movie and understand we can get somewhere again. Things may feel very divisive right now, but we’ve done amazing things in the past and we can get back there. Come and be inspired by 3 African American women who nobody knows about and support their cause. We need to come and uplift women.

magine being in the running to direct the newest Spiderman film. What kind of script would have to cross your desk to make you drop out of consideration?

For me, it would have to be something that moved my soul, told a story that has never been expressed on screen before and had the potential to inspire unity in a country that sorely needs it right now. This scenario is more than a hypothetical situation. For director Theodore Melfi, it’s real life.

Melfi was in the final stages of consideration to call the shots for Marvel’s cash cow franchise reboot of Spiderman when pages from Margot Lee Shetterly’s book ‘Hidden Figures’ changed everything. The uncompleted book told the true story of African American women whose mathematical calculations for NASA helped fuel America’s greatest accomplishments in space during the 60’s. I sat down with Melfi to discuss his passion for ‘Hidden Figures’ and the leading ladies who brought the story to life.

What inspired you about this story to take it on?

f you are in my age group, surely you have fond memories of the Doo-Wop music era that took over radio airwaves throughout the 50’s and early 60’s. The melodious harmonies could be heard on every street corner and roof top in black neighborhoods. Everybody tried and believed they could sing Doo-Wop, blacks and whites.

I was highly flattered when my high school beau, Lenny Fonsville, named his group The HAZELTONES. He had the deep bass voice and I owned a tape recorder, fair enough.

The guys would spend hours in the basement of my house working out harmonies.

Back in the day, songs had lyrics that cut deep in the heart and soul. One such song that stands out for me today is “I’m on the Outside Looking In” recorded by Little Anthony & The Imperials. Little Anthony’s falsetto and the

smooth interjections of the background voices sent chills down the spine.

The words in the title are not simply a lover’s remorse about a breakup with his girl. You might want to look up that song, or maybe you still own the LP. Many of the lines sung with such pleading emotion are a wakeup call that can be utilized as a lifestyle checkup. Take it out of a love situation and place it right in the middle of how you feel under certain circumstances.

about relationships, friends and family… on the outside looking in? How about the latest doctor’s report…on the outside looking in?

How about the latest political atmosphere in the country…on the outside looking in?

It is not smart or sensible to use age or lack of time as an excuse for not being aware of what’s going on. There is too much information and so many sources available for anyone to remain in the dark.

You may be your own worst enemy, the one who is keeping you on the outside looking in.

Let’s spend a moment to think about

the times we claim disinterest in a particular topic of discussion. Whatever it is that raises a big stop sign across your forehead when the subject comes up needs to be examined.

Nobody knows everything about everything, but for sure you won’t know anything about anything if you are not willing to listen and you just might learn something useful. It is okay to know a little about a lot without undermining the fact that you know a lot about a little.

You can reawaken a child-like mindset of curiosity that will cultivate interest far beyond anything you ever imagined.

A new year has just begun; this is the perfect time to make a personal commitment.

Get in the swing of things. Let go of pride.

You might even be surprised at how many young people are willing to show you how these latest gizmos and devices work. We must let them show out in their smartness.

Intergenerational may be the only way for all of us to come up out of ignorance. Go look at the man/woman in the mirror. Look directly in your own eyes and sing it in your best Doo-Wop voice, “I’m on the outside looking in, I don’t wanna be, I don’t wanna be, left on the outside, all alone.”

The Administration or Government being the child, we must have more patience and tolerance for children. Trust me - I know - I have to remind my parents all the time to have patience with me!!.

But it is the next part that can really damage our country: the man afraid of the light. We the People are that man! The man who has been shown the light not just by great Presidents like Clinton, JFK and now our amazing President Obama but by those who choose to die to allow us to be here today. We the Man, the People, have been shown that light but are afraid to walk into it!

We are afraid to march in and drive out of darkness like the

Many were weeping with joy…I realized I just experienced history in the making and it will not be the last time I hear this young man. He has all it takes, and more, to become one of the greatest civil rights leaders of this Country maybe the next great President of the US.

During the Great Depression, Executive Secretary Eugene Kinckle Jones served on President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Black Cabinet.” Lester Granger, who headed the League during World War II, is among those credited with persuading President Harry Truman to desegregate the Armed Forces. Whitney M. Young advised presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and was instrumental in the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act. Urban League Presidents Vernon Jordan, John Jacob and Hugh Price continued our engagement with the Presidents with whom they served to further the work of civil rights and secure support for Urban League programs.

ith an estimated $1.3 trillion in student loans outstanding, it’s safe to say student loan debt is a reality for millions of Americans.

ince this is the beginning of a New Year and resolutions are the order of the day, I thought it would be good to consider a different kind of list, of spiritual must-haves, to apply to all seasons to come.

Perhaps if we all adopt some basic principals we can improve the quality of our lives and the lives of those we come in contact with on a daily basis. Drum roll please . . . In 2017 resolve to . . .

(1) Respect yourself and

others. By respecting the differences that make each one of us unique, we have an opportunity to experience the rich mosaic that life has to offer. It sounds simple: Accept a person regardless of race, religion, creed, color or country of origin.

(2) Feel compassion with an open, loving heart. Hate is contagious, but so is love. It is within each of us to think and feel with love. Set aside your own interests to allow your spirit to hear unspoken pain and heartache.

Respond with kindness, understanding and humility when asked to understand and comprehend the seemingly impossible.

(3) Develop understanding, and be gentle with yourself and others. People’s life experiences help shape their personality. No two people share the same perspective on anything even if they experience it together. Make

room for others and their experiences.

(4) Begin to value time, yours and everyone else’s. Life is short, too short to waste it procrastinating. When you think about it, it takes a great deal of time to procrastinate! Why not do something instead of putting it off? Ultimately you save time because you are freeing up energy to pursue other opportunities.

(5) Have a prayerful spirit.

Take time each day to meditate or to pray for the welfare of the world and its people. The universe needs your support.

(6) Commit to at least one kind act each day. How much time does it take to reach out and brighten someone’s day? To quietly acknowledge that the world doesn’t revolve around you? To realize that we all have to look beyond our own pain and circumstances to help others? To

know that by taking time to be kind we are helping someone else heal?

(7) Work toward inner peace.

I think it was Jasmine Guy’s character, Whitley in an episode of A Different World that I found particularly significant who said, “Relax, relate, release!” I found myself repeating those three words (with a chuckle, I might add), but never really practicing the intent. Well, it’s a new day!

Let go of the turmoil that threatens to bog you down, and move forward in peace, knowing that a higher power has everything under control. Know it from the very center of your spirit. Even as negativity and turmoil surround you, you can wear a spiritual armor stronger than any protection human beings can devise.

(8) Release your creative energy! Do you secretly want to be an artist, but haven’t pur-

sued it because you feel silly or that you don’t have the time or talent? Who cares! This is about exploring your interests. Following your passion could lead to a new job or hobby or become a source of self-expression and joy that flows through to other areas of your life. You will be a more joyful person.

(9) Find the courage to release the child within you! This one is a tough one, because we have “grown up”, and being grown means a certain amount of seriousness is in order. Nonsense!

Lighten up! I am not suggesting that you put on blinders, but that you let yourself be awed by the wonder and sheer majesty of life—and by the divine sense of humor we experience every day.

(10)Exercise free choice.

Choose something you feel you need in order to make a difference in your life in 2017 and go

after it. Know that it’s all up to you. Nothing and nobody is dictating your path of action.

So there you have it. Of course if you make these ten must-haves a part of your life, the world won’t change overnight and neither will you. But I promise you that you will set the wheels of personal—and collective—change in motion. Think about it.

he celebrations for the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are over. We participated in a celebration in Baldwin, New York at the First United Methodist Church of Baldwin where Rev. Luonne Rouse is the newly appointed Pastor.

The predominantly white congregation was extremely receptive to the service. The music was coordinated by Dr. Rev. Ouida Harding. God got the glory.

As usual the band played to the Glory of God! A Unity Concert was presented by Rev. Roger Hambrick and the Green Pasture Baptist Church Choirs at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale last week during the King Day Celebrations.

This concert was important for us all due to the fact that if there ever was a time for the different peoples of the nation to unite – it’s now!

“Audacity: How Barack Obama Defied His Critics and Transformed America ” by Jonathan Chait REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

I

f you can’t say something nice…

Sometimes, it’s hard to say nothing at all. There are times when you need to speak out, to confront, share your opinion, rant, or vent. And then there are times, as in the new book “Audacity” by Jonathan Chait, where you must praise.

For perhaps the last few months of Barack Obama’s presidency, media outlets have debated about something that definitely matters: was he one of the best presidents, or one of the worst?

It’s the former, says Chait, even though he admits there are times when it looks like the latter. Obama, he says, how-

ever, absolutely succeeded at what he set out to do, and this book follows that argument.

Though the Civil Rights movement was forty-some years prior to the day a Black man moved into the White House, racial issues keenly split the country over the last eight years, not along lines of race, but on political lines.

White America often denied it, but Obama forced a harder soul-search on racism.

He reportedly had a large agenda upon taking office in 2009, but it quickly became clear that his work would be to avoid, rather than fix, another Great Depression. He succeeded, but no President gets kudos for things like that. Instead,

says Chait, there was – and still is – criticism about his actions, economically.

Health care legislation insured millions of Americans who otherwise would have no coverage, thanks to Obama and a surprising number of ideas that first came from the Republicans. As a new President, Obama boosted the economy by spending money on green energy, with an eye toward global climate concerns. He helped restore America ’s world-wide “standing”; and foresightfully recognized China and India as budding superpowers.

So why is anyone questioning his audacity, or the legacy he leaves behind? The answer to that lies in the recent past,

and in the history of Twentieth-Century American politics. Understanding both, and what happens from here, is enhanced by learning what’s inside “Audacity.”

Just know first that there’s a lot to absorb.

Because author Jonathan Chait is also a political columnist, the goings-on behindthe-scenes in Washington are presented in great detail in this book. That can be both a good thing and a bad thing: good, because Chait is clear in reasoning and thorough in fact-finding, in favor of arguments for a stellar Obama legacy; bad, because this thoroughness becomes quite heavy at times.

That could turn away readers with a lesser palate for politics, although one wouldn’t

have to look hard to see why persevering is important: Chait explains how Obama’s tenure as President ultimately turned out as it did, and why many voters are still, perhaps wrongly, disappointed in his work.

Chait then goes on to clearly illuminate what happened at the last election, and why.

Give yourself time for a careful read of this book, especially if you might disagree

with its author. There’s argument in here that may – or may not – change minds; either way, “Audacity” might at least give you something nice to say.

Survey Unmasks the Peculiar Behaviors of Pet Owners (Statepoint)

o you share a playlist with your poodle? Take a bath with your turtle? It might seem far-fetched, but since many people treat pets like family, they often let them do surprising things.

A recent survey, com-

missioned by Moen, conducted online by Harris Poll, finds that, among other things, 43 percent of Americans who have ever owned a pet have let their pet lick their plate before washing them.

From bathing with pets to letting them sit at the

dinner table, pet owners do peculiar things.

“Almost all of us have had at least one furry friend in our lifetime,” says Andrea Maher, senior marketing communications specialist, Moen. “What’s different about today’s

pets, however, is that we truly treat them like family. Sometimes, even better.”

To make pets feel like someone is with them at all times, some people leave the TV on for them. And some do a bit more. Indeed, the aver-

age amount Americans who have ever owned a pet spend on their pet per month is $55, outside of medical expenses.

“We’ve heard from customers who have installed Pot Filler faucets to fill dog water bowls, those who’ve created

pet bathing stations with our powerful handshowers, and even some who have bathtubs dedicated solely to washing pets,” adds Maher. “It’s no longer a ‘man’s world’ these days. It’s a ‘pet’s world,’ and we’re just living in it.”

time in life however, when you have to “stand up!” as Rep. John Lewis has urged us all to do, and make your voice heard. My message this week is brief and simple: Stand up – your health depends on it.

Activist organizations all across the country are mobilizing efforts to stop or soften the blow that a repeal of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) would cause for over 20 million people across the country. Think for a moment, 20 million people – those with pre-existing conditions, nonelderly uninsured adults, young people now able to stay on their parents plan up until

age of 26 could get kicked off, and of course millions of seniors saving more money due to the Medicare prescription drug “donut hole” closure –all stand to lose big time if the people do not recognize and use what is in their hands to fight it.

If the question is, “what’s in our hands?”

One answer is, a phone.

With one hand we pick up the phone, with the other we write letters to our local members of congress.

Our symbolic “hands” are actually our voices as well.

We can use our voices to urge our local members of Congress to “stop the rush” to repeal Obamacare, es-
