Eight Steps That Can Lead You to a More Fulfilling Life

T

here’s a reason people love the start of a New Year – or the first day of spring, or maybe the first day of school.

The idea of a clean slate – of making changes or starting over fresh – can be exhilarating.

“It isn’t necessarily that you don’t like the life you live,” says John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream ( w w w.johnneyland. com). “It’s just that you suspect there’s something you’re missing – something more fulfilling.”

The truth is, those possibilities are always within your reach, Neyland says. “But to have

the life you want means you have to change course.”

Here are some ways to make that turn in your life, using what Neyland refers to as “pivots”: • Put fear in its place and understand it. Fear has no power unless you lend it power. It doesn’t change the end result, and often it causes more damage than whatever it was you were so worried about.

Neyland suggests you think about the biggest fear you’ve ever had.

What was the outcome and did you recover?

Chances are you came out the other end just fine.

• Courage is not the

lack of fear but going forward in the face of it. Courage is like exercise: The more you use it, the easier it becomes – and the more you benefit. We are taught to avoid pain and danger.

You have to choose to face life with courage – but in the end, it’s how you handle fear and how you respond to it that can change your course.

• Compromise is a dirty word. It can steal your life and dreams.

To work for or spend time with someone who doesn’t share your values is a compromise, Neyland says, and compromise robs your energy and affects your momentum.

• There is great value in having mentors. It’s less painful and more efficient to learn from the mistakes and successes of others: a family member, teacher or business leader you admire. Learn from them and emulate them in your everyday life.

• Dream without restraint. Thinking about what you want to do only in the context of what you know you can do is more of a nightmare than a dream.

Pursue your goals with all you have. Don’t be concerned with failing. “The journey and the struggle can be extremely satisfying,” Neyland says. “It rivals the attainment of a goal.

• Be honest with yourself. Many people lie to themselves about whom or what is most important to them. Lying sets off a chain reaction that stalls momentum and makes your life a little less than what it should be. Even small lies chip away at the person you want to be.

• Be impatiently focused. We have a limited number of breaths to build the world around us. Focus on a goal and don’t wait for the right moment or perfect conditions to go for it. Time matters.

• Control what you can control and forget about the rest. Every moment you spend lamenting a

situation you couldn’t control, you’re stealing from yourself. Direct your energy and momentum to something you can manage instead.

Before you start over, spend some time revisiting what matters most to you, Neyland says. What are your values? What are your likes and dislikes? What do you want to do with your life?

“Make a list of all these things,” he says.

“Then dream boldly and take action.”

DNY State of Health Enrollment Surges to More than 3.6 Million An additional 800,000 New Yorkers enroll through the Marketplace since January 2016

N

Y State of Health, the state’s official health plan Marketplace, today announced that more than 3.6 million New Yorkers enrolled in comprehensive health coverage through NY State of Health, a 28 percent increase from 2016.

“New York continues its commitment to bring affordable, comprehensive health coverage to New Yorkers” said NY State of Health Executive Director, Donna Frescatore. “New Yorkers now have access to affordable health insurance coverage, giving hundreds of thousands of previously uninsured individuals

In the final two days of the 2017 Open Enrollment period, NY State of Health enrolled 45,807 people in coverage bringing the total number of people who receive coverage through the Marketplace to more than 3.6 million-an increase of more than 800,000 people since the end of 2016 Open Enrollment.

January 31, 2017 was the busiest day ever for the NY State of Health Marketplace website.

The website provided nearly 3 million page views and was used by more than 110,000 users.

This exceeded the prior

busiest day of December 15, 2016, in both page views and users. In addition, NY State of Health’s Customer Service Center received more than 100,000 calls on the final day of open enrollment.

As of January 31, more than 1.2 million people enrolled in a non-Medicaid program through the Marketplace: 242,880 people enrolled in a Qualified Health Plan – nearly 60 percent of them qualified for federal tax credits, which most use to reduce monthly premiums throughout the year.

In 2016, New York launched the Essential Plan under the Affordable

Care Act’s Basic Health Plan option. Unique to New York, the Essential Plan makes coverage even more affordable for lower-income New Yorkers. As of January 31, enrollment in the Essential

Plan reached 665,324, an increase of 75 percent in just one year. In addition, 299,214 children enrolled in Child Health Plus.

A total of 2,427,375 people enrolled in Med-

icaid as of January 31 through the NY State of Health Marketplace.

Total enrollment across all NY State of Health programs as of January 31, 2017, is 3,634,793.

lthough we are only one month into the new year, several prospective first time home buyers have expressed their discouragement over the lack of available affordable housing in Harlem.

They are ready to give up on their dream of homeownership because the process is too stressful. I have stated during my workshops that the home buying process is difficult. The statistical data proves out that only about 10% of those wanting to buy a home will successfully complete the process.

However, if you have a good plan and follow the steps taught in the home buying seminar, you can achieve your dream of becoming a homeowner. Here are some suggestions to assist you: (1) be ready

when an opportunity becomes available. You must have your money saved. You will be able to get a jump on the competition if you already have a pre-approval from your lender. Real estate agents will know you are serious about completing the process.

(2) Maintain a healthy credit score. Aim for having your score over 700. Use your credit wisely. Keep your balance below 30% of the maximum limits.

will never forget the day I found the lump in my neck. I was halfway through my daily 3 mile walk.

But I couldn’t breathe and definitely needed to turn back around. My neck was swollen and I felt tired as if I had been beaten up. I didn’t understand why the walk was so difficult. A few days later I was at my doctor’s office to get checked out. I was told that I had asthma and that it could not be cancer as I was too young.

The swollen lymph nodes were dismissed as being infected. But I never got better, in fact my health declined. So I visited another doctor who decided to do test although he also promised that it could not be cancer. The funny thing is I never once mentioned or even thought I had cancer but each doctor ruled it out on the first visit.

As testing progressed I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and advised to have my thyroid removed. After receiving second opinions I had my first surgery in 2015 and then a repeated surgery in 2016. At the age of 41 I am now a cancer survivor. When I look back on the experience I wonder how I made it with the heavy demands of being a single 16

parent entrepreneur of kids ages 4, 15 and 20 year old. Some weeks were filled with doctor appointments, tests, adjusting to new medication and traveling for work. And the weight gain. Not having that little gland does a lot to your body and mind.

The constant fatigue, anxiety and did I mention the weight gain.

Yet, I survived it and I’m thriving. I changed my diet, continue to walk

and adjusted to what is now my new body.

Being an entrepreneur gave me the flexibility that I needed to take care of my health without having fear that I would lose my job. I could also adjust the projects that I took on so I could have the income that I needed for my medical care. I know being a business woman going through this provided many securities that many of my employed friends did not have.

While going through this I wondered how other cancer survivors made it and if their employers allowed them time to get healed.

Owning a business is not just about increasing your income it is also about living your best life.

Ask that hospital staff clean their hands before treating you and ask visitors to clean their hands.

Before your doctor uses a stethoscope ask that the diaphragm (the flat surface) be wiped with alcohol.

If you need a “central line” catheter, ask your doctor about the benefits of one that is antibiotic-impregnated or anti-

septic-coated to reduce infections.

If you need surgery, choose a surgeon with a low infection rate.

Beginning 3 to 5 days before surgery, shower or bathe daily with chlorhexidine soap.

Ask your surgeon to have you tested for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at least one week before coming to the hospital.

Stop smoking well in advance of your surgery.

On the day of your operation, remind your doctor that you may need an antibiotic one hour before the first incision.

Network Marketing 2017

hen many people hear the term network marketing, what comes to mind is a business where only a few at the top make money while the majority in the business will not. That is where the term pyramid comes from. Network marketing is not a pyramid scheme, which is illegal.

Network marketing should not be mistaken for the old multilevel marketing systems that made you buy loads of merchandise to sell to friends and family;

merchandise that still maybe in the closet or in storage. Memories of those bad experiences are hard to forget. I have a few myself.

Online marketing has changed the business model for network marketing throughout the world. The internet has made network marketing a vehicle for financial freedom in the 21st century and beyond.

When you combine a good network marketing system with the advantages of the internet you provide business opportunities for anyone no matter the sex, race, age, education or past business experiences. alentine’s Day is next Tuesday, and I know that you are expecting me to write about all sorts of Valentine’s related things—gift ideas to consider buying hot, sexy lingerie to surprise your significant other, getting one of those glamour photos, etc . . .

Not this year! Valentine’s Day is, simply put, the

commercialization of romance! Advertisers send a subliminal, yet very powerful message that everybody should be in a relationship, and that something is wrong with you if you are not. Valentine’s Day is also a day that you can use to let all the people in your life know that you love them, which means you’ll have different expressions of love for each. So, instead of giving into the hype, consider giving a gift from the heart instead.

If you are in a relationship, don’t put so much weight on what your significant other gives you on V-Day. How does he or she treat you the other 364 days of the year?

If they treat you well, then don’t quibble if you don’t get the flowers, candy or whatever you feel you should get . . . If he/ she treats you badly that means it is time to re-think the relationship.

If you are single, don’t get caught up in what others are getting—show some love to your family and friends and most importantly to yourself! If it will make you feel better, get your own flowers and candy.

Are you a parent? Do something unexpected for your children. At breakfast or dinner do something silly; “draw” hearts on their plates with ketchup or write “I love you” in chocolate syrup on their

ice cream or cake. Yes, you run the risk that they will tell you it’s corny, but what you’ll gain is their memory of your love for them.

For family members, instead of the standard card giving, share some family love across the country with a conference call. If your family is local, keep “the ties that bind” with an impromptu potluck or dessert party.

Your sister-friends and male friends usually have the least expectations of receiving acknowledgement on Valentine’s Day. Not because they don’t think you care but like you, they may be addressing their own Valentine’s Day issues. Give them a

gift that is one of the best and easiest to give; just pick up the phone and say, “Happy Valentine’s Day, I love you my friend.” Or whatever message of love and support you would like to convey.

hile make and model are still dominant factors on car lots, today’s consumers have a new set of priorities, thanks to increasingly sophisticated in-vehicle technologies being offered in new cars.

From connectivity systems that include voice command controls to technologies that make parking a cinch, today’s consumers want more from their rides.

In fact, nearly half of consumers -- 48 percent -- prioritize in-vehicle technology over brand or body style, according to the 2017 Autotrader Car Tech Impact Study. And they know what they want, too. The study found that consumers these days are researching the exact features they’d like to purchase before visiting the dealership.

“What once seemed like something only for ‘The Jetsons’ is quickly becoming everyday reality in the automotive landscape,” says Brian Moody, executive editor for Autotrader. “And it’s not just vehicles with a high price-point. Many mainstream family cars are now equipped with technology features only seen on topof-the-line luxury vehicles just a few short years ago.”
