February is Black History Month and we will bring you Black History Month editorial every week throughout the month of February. This week we focus on the new Harriet Tubman $20 Bill the Biden Administration is pushing through. (see page 13) Cicely Tyson passed away last week. Just one week prior she participated in an interview with Gayle King. Journalist Hazel Smith, who is also a member of Abyssinian Baptist church fondly remembers Cicely Tyson and contributed this week’s article. (see page 4) I got my Pfizer COVID vaccination administered by New York Presbyterian last week at the Armory on 169th Street. I had an appointment.

I arrived a few minutes before my assigned time and was surprised that although there was a line – it was a moving line. The process was very organized as you got your forms to fill out, you went to the people on the computer who checked your id and entered your info, then you were sent to the station to get your vaccine, you had to sit for 15 minutes after your vaccine so they could make sure you had no immediate reaction. While you are sitting they come by and give you your appointment for your second dose. That’s it. It has been more than 5 days now and I have had no reaction and felt such a sense of relief when I finally got it. Also, I would like to add that everyone in that Armory seemed especially nice and professional.

Remember to continue to shop with local businesses in the community. When you shop with businesses in your community it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community. Many of our small business owners live in the community and are raising their families in the community. See some small businesses you can shop with now in this issue..

CICELY TYSON: “I Done My Best” I

t is not unusual for followers of well acclaimed artists to imagine they know all about them. Groupies follow their performance schedules, movie-goers sit in darkened theaters and fantasize, Broadway tickets sell out from first mention of their coming. We see their success through eyes of glory, but we do not know their story.

It is no mistake that CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King would have - what she could not have known at the time - to be a final conversation with the late great Cicely Tyson.

This was not to be the usual interview with artistic chit chat, not a focus on Tyson’s newly written memoir, “Just As I Am” to be released in the same week or the Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and

Fine Arts in East Orange, New Jersey, where she had lent her heart and experience to middle and high school students.

As I watched the interview, I had a sense of destiny being revealed in divine order. Little did I know two days later, Thursday, January 28th, Tyson’s longtime manager Larry Thompson would confirm the passing of our legend, Cicely Tyson.

Since that day, the world

wide web has printed heartfelt comments from Tyson’s colleagues, close friends and those who felt led to express their appreciation of her commitment to portray the undeniable strengths and abilities of Black women.

I looked at biographical information and read reviews of critical acclaim on the nearly eight decades of theatrical performances. My heart rejoiced reviewing the progression of ac-

complishments from modeling to television to film, off-Broadway and Broadway stages.

I discovered there was so much more to marvel at in the roles she accepted beyond those most often mentioned, like Sounder, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Roots, and her remarkable Broadway engagement of The Trip to Bountiful at the age of 88. Additionally, she had received a gamut of awards that included Tony’s, Emmys, several NAACP Image, Honorary Academy Achievement, Screen Actors Guild and the most prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, and others.

My remembrances of Cicely Tyson come from a personal place in my heart. We were Sis-

ters in Christ at church. In all the places, far and near that her career had taken priority in her life, the place I believe she most valued was the sanctuary of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, pastored by the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. She came to the church in Harlem, the place of her birth on every possible Sunday, rain or shine to praise the God who had blessed her mightily. Cicely Tyson was God-centered, and God driven.

With respect and dignity, she moved with steady grace down the aisle to the pew on which she placed a dedication to her mother, Blessed Assurance IN MEMORY OF MAMA, FREDRICKA TYSON. This was meant to be the sacred space that Gayle King

would meet her for the final interview. Seated close by her pew, she answered King’s question, “How would you like to be remembered?’ In the beauty of her majestic elegance, confident in humble compliance, Ms. Cicely Tyson replied with the same sincerity and words of truth she had devoted to her entire life, “I done my best.”

“Thank you to NewYork-Presbyterian and the frontline workers, who have been here for our

community through this pandemic. Our communities have overcome incredible challenges, even as we have been devastated by this deadly pandemic and suffered tremendous loss. This weekend, with the assistance of NewYork-Presbyterian and members of my team, we were able to ensure the COVID-19 vaccine was administered

New Administration’s Biggest Challenge: Biden Launches Head-On Attack Against COVID-19

Senate impeachment trial, the aftermath of a deadly insurrection, racial tension boiling, and a myriad of foreign policy and other issues are among the many challenges facing President Joe Biden’s administration.

Perhaps the biggest – or at least one of the most immediate concern – is the coronavirus pandemic, which many maintain former President Donald Trump mostly (and dangerously) ignored.

The underlining challenge of the pandemic is health care. A challenge which only heightens when one considers that Trump spent the last four years weakening and attempting to completely dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which protects health care for tens of millions of Americans.

President Biden unveiled a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan, which he titled “American Rescue Plan.”

The plan includes direct payments in the form of $1,400 stimulus checks, to struggling Americans, increased federal unemployment benefits from $300 to $400 per week through the end of September, and raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour.

The President also proposed a new $15 billion grant program for struggling small business owners, separate from the existing Paycheck Protection Program, along with a $35 billion investment in local financing programs that provide businesses with low-interest loans.

He stated that the package would provide additional support for American workers and fami-

lies until the COVID-19 vaccine is more widely available.

“A crisis of deep human suffering is in plain sight, and there is no time to wait; we have to act now,” the new President said.

“In this moment of crisis, we cannot afford inaction. These investments in jobs will prevent long-term economic damage, and the benefits will far surpass the cost.”

President Biden’s overall plan also calls for the restoration of emergency paid sick leave, $350 billion in aid for state and local governments, and $170 billion to assist K-12 schools and higher education.

Additionally, the plan includes extending eviction and foreclosure moratoriums until the end of September, with $5 billion pledged to help tenants struggling to pay rent.

The ambitious plan contains $50 billion for coronavirus testing, $20 billion toward a national vaccine program. What’s more, the President seeks to increase SNAP benefits by 15 percent through September and raise the Child Tax Credit to $3,000 per child – and $3,600 for children under 6. President Biden said he desires to make the Child Tax Credit refundable for the year.

Because of Trump’s assault on the Affordable Care Act – and health care in general, the percentage of uninsured Americans rose dramatically in the three years since President Barack Obama left office.

In November, the Supreme Court heard arguments by Republican attorneys general and the

Trump administration, seeking to repeal Obama’s signature legislation.

President Biden’s team estimates that roughly two to three million people lost employer-sponsored health insurance between March and September of 2020.

The President said even families who have maintained coverage might struggle to pay premiums and afford care.

Further, going into the pandemic, 30 million people were without coverage, limiting their access to the health care system in the middle of a pandemic.

To ensure access to health coverage, President Biden has called on Congress to subsidize continuation health coverage (COBRA) through the end of September.

He is also asking Congress to expand and increase the Premium Tax Credit’s value.

President Biden said he wants to lower health insurance premiums for most Americans and potentially eliminate them altogether for the poor, ensuring enrollees in government-sponsored health care exchanges (including those who never had coverage through their

jobs), will not pay more than 8.5 percent of their income for coverage.

“During this pandemic, millions of Americans, through no fault of their own, have lost the dignity and respect that comes with a job and a paycheck,” President Biden said.

“The very health of our nation is at stake.”

In acknowledging the toll the pandemic and racism have taken on Black America, the President also seeks to address racial disparities.

He promised to increase funding for community health centers.

With America’s jails and prisons disproportionately populated

by African Americans, President Biden added that he wants to financially support efforts to help mitigate the impact the virus has had behind bars.

He addressed the growing hunger crisis that also primarily affects minority communities.

“More than one in five Black and Latino households in America report that they do not have enough food to eat,” the President remarked. “It’s wrong. It’s tragic.

It’s unacceptable.”

Four decades ago, while a student at Union Theological Seminary, Suzan Johnson Cook, then a member, did her field placement at the Union Baptist Church in the Village of Harlem, under the leadership of Dr. Ollie B Wells. Shortly thereafter she was elected to the historic Mariners Temple Baptist Church, as the first Black woman senior pastor in the American Baptist Church’s denomination’s 200 year history. Not knowing the terrain, she soon met the Rev. Calvin Presley, a United Methodist Pastor, who asked her to lead a new program, the Black Women in ministry program, funded by the Lilly Endowment, to help advance and place Black women in ministry. Four decades later, in her fortieth year in ministry, she returns home to Union Baptist Church, now pastored by the Rev. Brian D. Scott, who invited her “back home” to partner and lead the 21st century version of this ministry. Together they have received a grant of $1 Million to help establish the Black Women in Ministry REAL THRIVE Initiative (R.E.A.L. stands for Relationship building, Equipping and Expanding, Access and Leadership and legacy Development) It is part of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Thriving in Ministry, an initiative that supports a variety of religious organizations across the nation as they create or strengthen programs that help pastors build relationships with experienced clergy who can serve as men-

Whenever three respectable negroes, heads of families, shall desire to settle on land, and shall have selected for that purpose an island, or a locality clearly defined within the limits above designated, the inspector of settlements and plantations will himself, or by such sub-ordinate officer as he may appoint, give them a license to settle such island or district, and afford them such assistance as he can to enable them to establish a peaceable agricultural settlement. The three parties named will subdivide the land, under the supervision of the inspector, among themselves and such others as may choose to settle

arlem’s most prolific poet laureate Langston Hughes wrote MONTAGE OF A DREAM DEFERRED from which he asks, “what happens to a dream deferred?” And so, a story goes.

A promise was made to freed slaves by the government that land once belonging to plantation owners would be given to former slaves.

A dream became a promise, though farfetched and unimaginable at the time. This happened at the end of the Civil War. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Union Army overtook the city of Savannah in 1864. Sherman attended a meeting organized by Edwin Stanton, President Lincoln’s secretary of war in Savannah in 1865 with local black ministers. The main discussion was the abandoned plantations along the Georgia and South Carolina coasts.

Following the meeting, Sherman officially designated SPECIAL FIELD ORDERS NO. 15, documented January 16, 1865. Sherman ordered that the abandoned rice plantations from the sea to 30 miles inland would be “reserved and set apart for the settlement” of the freed slaves in the region. The land that once belonged to those who rose in rebellion against the federal government had already been declared “abandoned” by

an act of Congress.

Sherman’s words spread rapidly among thousands of newly freed slaves and the DREAM of having their own land with the prospect of providing for themselves circulated as fact. It has been estimated that approximately 40,000 former slaves did indeed receive grants of land under Sherman’s order.

General Rufus Saxton oversaw the administering of the land along the Georgia coast.

While Sherman’s order stated, “each family shall have a plot of not more than 40 acres of tillable ground,” there was no specific mention of a mule or any farm animal. However, General Saxton is said to have provided surplus U.S. Army mules to some of the families granted land under Sherman’s order.

When Andrew Johnson became president following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, he issued a proclamation of pardon and amnesty to citizens in the South if they would take an oath of allegiance. As part of Johnson’s pardon process, lands confiscated during the war would then be returned to white landowners.

Freed slaves who had been given 40 acres of farmland were ultimately denied their freedom after all and were forced to live in poverty under the system of sharecropping. Section III below is the portion of SPE-

Biden Administration in Push to Put Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill

fter four years of push back from the administration of Donald Trump, Underground Railroad heroine Harriet Tubman may finally appear on U.S. currency.

“The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume those efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday, Jan. 25. “[The Biden administration] is exploring ways to speed up that effort. It’s important that our notes, our money reflect the history and diversity of our country, and Harriet Tubman’s image on our new $20 note would certainly reflect that,” Psaki commented.

In April 2016, then-President Barack Obama announced that Tubman would replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Obama wanted the release of the new bill to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment in 2020 that gave women the right to vote.

However, Trump had expressed an affinity toward Confederate figures and sang the praises of Jackson, claiming that he had led the U.S. to great success during his twoterms in office from 1829 to 1837.

Jackson, a slave owner, joined the Confederate army after Virginia seceded in 1861. He served under Gen. Robert E. Lee

during the Civil War. Tubman, an escaped slave, led countless people to freedom. Trump suggested that he might consider placing her image on a $2 bill, but not replace Jackson.

President Biden has vowed to right the many wrongs of the Trump administration, including working toward improving race relations in America and offering more opportunities to people of color. Tubman would be the first African-American woman featured on U.S. currency.

Largest African American Digital Archive Convenes Influential Leaders to Stem the Loss of Black History

020 has provided us with many lessons including how public knowledge of the Black experience and the contributions of African Americans is extremely limited and harmful to American society as a whole. America sits at a critically important crossroads where racist ideology is on the rise and documentation and preservation of African American life, history and culture is at risk of being lost forever if action is not taken now. Many key public figures are passing away without having their stories documented and preserved for the benefit of succeeding generations.

The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive has made this loss prevention its mission over the past twenty years.

Yet, it finds itself in 2020 -- its 20th anniversary year, in a race against time. To increase public understanding and awareness

of this crisis, The HistoryMakers is hosting a virtual convening of some of the nation’s top African American thought leadership. Hosted on YouTube and Facebook, T he HistoryMakers 20@2020: 20 Days and 20 Nights (Tuesday, December 1st –Sunday, December 20th) will shine a light on the urgency of this issue as well as provide a first time, behind the scenes view of The HistoryMakers organization, its digital archive and educational initiatives and its iconic An Evening With… PBS-TV programs.

Our need is urgent, especially as the next generation of storytellers, changemakers, and stewards of our legacy are now taking the lead,” says Julieanna Richardson,

HistoryMaker Howard Dodson, Director-Emeritus of Howard University Libraries and the former director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC, added: “Our mainstream institutions have not approached preservation work equitably to be inclusive of the African American experience creating a heritage gap that is contributing to the divisions in America we are experiencing today. But even more important, there is also a funding gap to support and uplift this work. And that needs to change.”

Since its inception, The HistoryMakers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Chicago, has grown to become the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive . With education as its mission, its one-of-a-kind collection is housed permanently at

the Library of Congress and provides an unprecedented and irreplaceable physical and online record of African American lives, accomplishments, and contributions through unique first-person testimony. Over the past twenty years, almost 3,400 video oral history interviews (11,000 hours) have been recorded in 413 cities and towns, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Norway.

These narratives include the stories of Alonzo Pettie, the oldest living Black cowboy; statesman General Colin Powell; 211 of the nation’s top scientists; civic leader Vernon Jordan; and political leaders such as President Barack Obama (when he was an Illinois State Senator) and more.

Its website (www.thehistorymakers.org), accessed by millions worldwide, is cited in Wikipedia and used as a “go-to” reference tool. Its digital archive (https://da.thehistor-

ymakers.org username: info@thehistorymakers.org; password: THMDemo) has been licensed by almost 80 colleges, universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Ohio State, University of Oregon), K-12 schools, and public libraries (Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, etc.) for use by faculty, students and patrons. This has been particularly relevant in the COVID-19 era and the focus on online learning. The HistoryMakers archive now and well into the future will provide a more complete understanding of who we are as Americans, as well as where we have come from, and where we are going as a nation.

The Father of Black History

By: W.A.Rogers was raised by my grandparents Elizabeth and Joseph Woodson in Williamston South Carolina until it was time for me to start school, and every summer after until I was about thirteen. My grandfather died in 1952 two years after his famous cousin Dr. Carter G. Woodson also known as the “Father of Black

History”.

Carter G Woodson was born in New Canton, Virginia on December 19, 1875, his parents James Woodson, and Eliza Riddle Woodson had seven children Carter was their fourth child. Young Carter worked as a sharecropper and a miner to help his family; he did not begin high school until his late teens. He was a brilliant student and completed a four-year course of study in less than two years.

Carter Woodson attended Berea College in Kentucky for about two years; he left college to work for the United States in the Philippines as an education superin-

tendent. After returning to the United States, he continued his studies at the University of Chicago where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Woodson went on to become the second African American to receive a Ph.D from Harvard University after W.E.B. Du Bois. Woodson became dedicated to the field of African American history.

In 1915 Dr. Woodson returned to Chicago to participate in a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation. The exhibits highlighting achievements of Black people since the abolition of slavery inspire Woodson to do more to celebrate black

history and heritage. Before leaving Chicago, he helped form the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) a year later in 1916 Woodson developed the Journal of Negro History.

In February 1924 Dr. Woodson began his campaign to create a week to celebrate Negro History.

Dr. Woodson chose the third week in February in recognition of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln February 12th and Frederick Douglass February 14th. Douglass was born a slave so his actual birthdate was unknown, but he chose the 14th as his birthday.

Negro History week was officially launched

in 1926. During the rise of the civil rights movement younger members of ASNLH (which was changed to the Association for the Study of African American History) urged the organization to shift to a month-long celebration of black history.

In 1976 on the 50th anniversary of the first Negro History Week, the association officially made the shift to Black History Month.

Dr. Woodson in his famous book “The Miseducation of the Negro” writes that “If you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder.

place and will stay in it” My mom Anna Woodson-Rogers often told me about her dad reading to her about black history from The “Negro History Bulletin” a mail order bulletin published by his cousin Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Black history was not taught in schools at that time.

In this digital age it is still extremely important for members of the African diaspora both young and old to learn and understand their history.

“Know Thy Self” is an ancient Kemetic saying inscribed at the entrance of temples of wisdom and ancient mysteries. I would recommend the Hidden Colors video series produced by Tariq Nasheed for family viewing in celebration of Black History Month.

hen you’re a kid, there are so many things

to learn.

Someone has to teach you your A-B-Cs, and to count to a hundred. You have to learn to tie a knot and set the table and stay safe. And this month, you should learn more about Black History, and that can be fun with these great books...

For the littlest reader ages 3 to 5, “The ABCs of Black History” by Rio Cortez, illustrated

by Lauren Semmer is a great way to start the lesson. This most fundamental book includes holidays, cities, people, and music that forms the base of Black History, in

colorful drawings and a format that’s fun.

Slightly older kids ages 4 to about 7 – those who still love picture books – will want “Stompin’ at the Savoy” by Moira Rose Donohue, illustrated by Laura Freeman, which is a book about the life of famed drummer Chick Webb; or “Life As You Climb: The Story of Ella Baker” by Patricia Hruby Powell and R. Gregory Christie, the tale of activist Baker and her inspirational work.

The truth is that it is a story – it’s a bunch of stories, in fact – first, of Ida B. Wells, crusader, writer, and suffragist, but not just her. The book is also about the people she inspired, the singers, lawmakers, inventors, thinkers, and others. Keep in mind that this is a big book, with lots of sidebars in a skinny cover; having a bookmark and notebook nearby might be handy.

And finally, for high school readers, “Separate No More: The Long Road to Brown v. Board of Education”

by Lawrence Goldstone begins more than 100 years ago with a landmark ruling on education for Black citizens and ends with another one that turned the first one upside down. Not just a story of an event, though, this book also looks at the people involved: judges, parents, teachers, politicians, citizens, and students who merely wanted to go to school.

If these books don’t quite fit your child’s interests, ask your librarian or bookseller for ideas.

There’s sure to be a book that you and your child will love to read and share because, when it comes to Black History, there’s really so much to learn.
