In 1976, President Gerald Ford issued the first African-American History Month Proclamation to be celebrated each February. More than ever African-Americans need to be uplifted in light of our new Administration in Washington.

I visited the museum the end of last year and suggest it as a “must visit” for individual and families. (see page 16).

Columbia University Celebrates Black History Month

From 1900 to 1950, amateur historian L. S. Alexander Gumby amassed a collection of more than 150 scrapbooks containing manuscripts, photographs, pamphlets, artwork, clippings, and ephemera related to African American history from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Gumby described his work as the “unwritten history” of the United States, due to the lack of general scholarly attention paid to African Americans by contemporary historians.

Donated to Columbia’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library in 1950, the Gumby collection introduces visitors to Gumby’s remarkable life—his acquaintances included luminaries such as Richard Bruce Nugent, Countee Cullen, and Langston Hughes—and situates it and his work in the context of the Harlem Renaissance. The project also places his curatorial efforts in relation to other pioneers of African American history such as Arthur Schomburg and Carter G. Woodson.

his February, Macy’s celebrates Black History Month by welcoming a host of stars from a variety of fields including fine art, music, literature, the culinary arts, and spoken word. Black culture has electrified the pulse of American life for generations, from music and fashion to film, television and activism. It has created a wave of change that has helped propel the country to new heights.

This year, our celebrity guests will share how creative self-expression and a strong connection to their heritage have shaped their careers. As part of Macy’s Black History Month celebrations, Grammy-nominated artist BJ The Chicago Kid, “Insecure” actor Jay Ellis, award-winning Macy’s Culinary Council Chef Marcus Samuelsson, and “The Read” podcast host Crissle West will join other emerging stars in conversations focused on the influence and impact of black

culture on all facets of American life.

District 9 City Council Candidate Marvin Holland Declares “No One Will Outwork Me”

W

ith voters set to go to the polls February 14 to select the Council Member who will replace Inez Dickens (whose seat is vacant due to her recent election to the Assembly) in Harlem’s 9th District, a growing coalition of organizations, elected officials and community leaders that represent a cross-section of Harlem’s - and the city’s - most dedicated citizens are lining up behind Marvin Holland in the race’s final weeks.

“I’m honored to have the support of so many individuals and groups that have done so much for our community,” said Holland of the endorsements. “It’s a testament to our message of ensuring that Harlem families have a voice in

our city government.”

Holland also finished first in fundraising in a crowded field of more than 14 candidates, taking in over $43,000 from 214 contributors.

Holland also far outpaces all other candidates with endorsements from the largest unions including TWU-Local 100, DC37, Teamsters Local 237 and the NYC Central Labor Council, which represents more than 1.3 million workers and 300 affiliated unions. This gives Holland considerable first place mo-

mentum going into the February 14 special election.

Holland, a native New Yorker, began working for the Transit Authority in 1991 after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. Over a 25+ year career, he rose from Cleaner to hold various positions within his union, TWU-Local 100, including Community Action Director. As the Political and Legislative Director, he works with elected officials, advancing legislation in Albany and City Hall to improve the safety, security, and quality

of life for the 42,000 workers he represents. Holland is running for City Council to bring Harlem residents those same results.

“Taking on the issues important to the people of Harlem are my priority. My whole career has been about standing up to power and getting working people a better deal. And that’s exactly what I’ll do for our community in the City Council. Harlem belongs to us — any investments or development taking place in Harlem must benefit the people first.”

Holland sits on a number of boards in his community including the Mid-Manhattan NAACP and PA’LANTE Harlem, a housing advocacy group protecting tenants from

predatory landlords.

Holland’s priorities include addressing the displacement of businesses by aggressive developers, stopping the privatization of NYCHA and addressing infrastructure issues, and quality of life concerns, including cleaner streets and accessibility needs for seniors and the disabled. He plans to invest more in the neglected arts and culture areas of Harlem, declaring Harlem “the

Mecca of African-American culture” drawing visitors from across the world. His signature plan is a housing Legacy program ensuring native Harlem residents (21-35) can rent or buy homes in their community.

Holland also promises that he will be in his community office “at least twice a week” to hear and address residents’ concerns. “The people who vote for me will always have access to me.”

Be Prepared to Buy Now

everal prospective first time home buyers have contacted me this past week expressing an interest to purchase a home within the next 2-3 months. If you are just starting the process this is quite an ambitious goal. But more importantly it indicated to me that they did not fully understand the steps involved in the home buying process.

In each instance these prospective buyers believed they could purchase a home within this specific timeframe. However, there were multiple problems that were unknown to these buyers: (1) not having saved an adequate amount for the down payment and closing costs; (2) not identifying an approved lender to start the pre-approval

process; and (3) not enrolling in an approved home buyer education seminar to assist them in acquiring the necessary information related to the home buying process. By not taking these appropriate steps they were setting themselves up for a disaster.

You cannot rush the home buying process. You must be thoroughly prepared to complete this transaction. This is a race that is not won by the swift but by the one who is best prepared.

Give yourself adequate time to increase your savings and to build up a solid credit history.

Understand it may take 30-45 days to obtain a pre-approval.

Plus, searching and finding a home that you can comfortably afford and meets your needs can take months perhaps years.

You must stay in control of the process. You do not want to feel pressured into purchasing a property by your real estate agent. You do not want to feel rushed because your landlord is trying to force you to move out of your current apartment.

There are many factors you must first consider when purchasing a home: the increased monthly expenses; the convenience and safety of the neighborhood and having enough space for your family are just a few.

“ADAM” BY PETER DeANDA DRAMATIZES THE POLITICAL LIFE AND LEGACY OF REV. ADAM CLAYTON POWELL JR.

T

o deepen our understanding of the most powerful, charismatic and complex Black politician of modern times, Woodie King, Jr.’s New Federal Theatre, in association with Castillo Theatre, will present “ADAM,” a bio-drama on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. by Peter DeAnda, from February 9 to March 12 at Castillo Theater, 543 West 42nd Street. Set in Bimini, the House of Representatives and Abyssinian Baptist Church, the compelling and historically accurate play captures the former congressman’s rise and fall, largely in his own words. Timothy Simonson plays the handsome and magnetic Congressman, appearing in what has become the signature role of his career.

He was also a man of large appetites and a lover of danger, who fell from grace just at the moment he was America’s--and possibly American History’s--most influential Black politician.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, Powell helped shape the social policies of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. But his jet set lifestyle, his cavalier attitude toward the committee’s finances, his “quixotic unpredictability” and his frequent absences set him up for inevitable consequences. In 1967, Powell was accused of corruption and unseated by the Democratic representa-

Church in 1938 and represented Harlem as its congressman from 1945 to 1971. During the Great Depression, he was a charismatic neighborhood organizer and civil rights leader, bringing political pressure on major businesses to accept Black employees. Through boycotts, demonstrations and other civic actions, he achieved professional-level jobs for Black workers in the 1939 World’s Fair, the MTA, utilities, Harlem Hospital and drugstore chains operating in the district. He was elected to congress in 1944, running on a platform of civil rights, fair employment practices and a ban on poll taxes and lynching. Brazenly outspoken on these and other issues, he was often their sole voice. This made him crucial to the evolution of politics of his time, because if he had not spoken out, many issues would not have

“ADAM” is a signature role for actor Timothy Simonson, who performed this play in 2012 and 2013 in the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem in 2013. He played W.E.B. Du Bois opposite Kathleen Chalfant as Mary White Ovington in “Dr. Du Bois and Miss Ovington,” a two-character play by Clare Coss about the suppressed relationship between these esteemed founders of the NAACP. It was presented in 2014 at Castillo Theatre by New Federal Theatre in association with Castillo Theater, directed by Gabrielle L. Kurlander.

Is It Past Time To Reprogram The Software In Your Brain

“A lot of the thoughts and attitudes rumbling around in your brain were probably programmed during childhood, which means they’re out of date,” she says. “It’s also likely that many beliefs that guide your life aren’t even your own. They were adopted from your family, culture or heritage.”

There’s a lot involved in unbinding those ties to the past, but Talbot offers a few tips to point you in the right direction.

• Understand that belief creates experience.

People often think that experience is what leads to beliefs, but it’s actually the other way around. Your beliefs shape your destiny. For example, if deep down you believe you’re not good enough to accomplish something, then that belief will create the reality.

“It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Talbot says.

“So when was the last time you examined your beliefs?

Are they outdated and only supporting a limited view of what’s really possible for you? Maybe it’s time to choose your own beliefs rather than operate from those passed down by your ancestors.”

• Be the cause for all the effects in your life.

Life is a chain reaction of causes and effects. Everything that happens was caused by what happened before and is the effect for what will happen next.

“Some people seem stuck on the ‘effect’ side of life, bemoaning their bad luck,” Talbot says. “Others habitually think of themselves

on the ‘cause’ side of life, always doing and achieving things.”

• Your words say more than you realize. The way we share and express our thoughts and beliefs is through language. And the language we use makes a huge difference, Talbot says. “You can change the language you use every day to label people, events, situations and circumstances in your life,” she says. “As soon as the label you put on them changes, your experience and perception of the person, the event, the situation or the circumstance also change.”

“Once you realize you’re creating your life as you go along, it gives you the power to change,” Talbot says. “You can choose to pay attention to different things, interpret experiences differently, feel differently and act differently.”

e all fall into habits and routines – it’s the nature of being human.

But even when you realize your daily behaviors are inhibiting you from achieving your goals, that doesn’t mean you can just vow to change one day and all will be well.

“Every single behavior that you demonstrate – good, bad or ugly – is actually run by your unconscious mind,” says Carol Talbot, a keynote speaker and author of YOU The Divine Genius (www.Youthedivinegenius.com). “So if you want to change a behavior, you can’t do it by willpower alone. You have to get into the unconscious mind and change it there.”

She likens it to running a new program on a computer. First, you need to install the program – or at least upgrade the existing software.

Here’s why: Research indicates that the unconscious mind is running you on its auto pilot 95 percent of the time, Talbot says.

“That means the conscious mind provides 5 percent or less of our cognitive activity during the day,” she says. “So even when you think you’re consciously making a decision, you’re not. You are operating from pre-existing programs running at the unconscious level.”

The good news, Talbot says, is you really can reprogram the “software” in your brain. But she cautions that unlearning a lifetime worth of habits is no simple feat.

he latest model smartphones are a big financial investment, whether you opt for the Apple iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. But there’s good news for those with butter fingers. Water-resistance is the new industry standard, reveals a new study.

The study from SquareTrade, a protection plan provider for smartphones, tablets and other devices, uses a range of robots to drop, tumble, dunk and bend devices to see how they live up to everyday activities, and this year, a new “surf test” was added to the mix -- pro surfer Kai Lenny took each phone out on the waves to test water-resistance.

Want to protect your new smartphone? The study results offer some key insights: • Water resistance: The iPhone 7 generation with an IP67 rating claims water resistance in “up to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.” While both phones survived tests of this claim, they did suffer some audio muffling afterward.

“The iPhone 7 generation is the first to compete with water resistance,” says Steve Abernethy, executive chairman at SquareTrade.

“After putting them to the test, there’s no doubt the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus aren’t

scared of going for a little swim.”

So while all this can give you some peace of mind around pools, puddles or even ocean waves, you will still want to take precautions around water.

ebruary, which is Black History Month, is a great opportunity for schools and individuals to turn their focus toward an important aspect of American history.

There are many ways citizens can commemorate the month across the country. This year, many are planning trips to the nation’s capital to visit the newly opened National Museum of African American

History and Culture. This Smithsonian Institution museum features exhibitions on slavery, emancipation, social justice, cultural traditions and more.

he chilly months can mean colds, flu and feeling worn down.

But just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you have to hibernate all winter. In addition to taking precautionary steps to stay healthy, it’s important to stay active with your family.

Here are five great ways to keep the cold from holding you and your family back from enjoying the season.

1. Bundle Up. While the cold weather itself is not the germy culprit that leads to illness, not wearing enough clothing outdoors can tax the body, compromise your immune system, and make you more vulnerable to succumbing to infection.

Stay bundled up and, when necessary, keep extremities protected with gloves, hats and thick socks.

2. Eat foods rich in Vitamin C. Give your immune system a healthy boost with an extra dose of Vitamin C. But look beyond citrus fruits for your daily measure. Bell peppers, broccoli and Brussel sprouts are also good sources of this necessary nutrient. 3. Keep hands clean.

Well, I just learned that he has been having a sexual relationship with a sorority sister, who’s also my best friend. I am uncomfortable with this situation because my male friend has a livein girlfriend who has been with him for over eight years. I feel like I need to say something, especially now that his assignment may be extended and his live-in

girlfriend is planning a visit. My girlfriend says she knows it’s temporary and that she plans to break up with him before his significant other arrives. She also confided to me that he told her that he loves her but cannot leave his live-in and

doesn’t know what to do. She is not a dumb girl. She’s an attorney, and she’s got it going on. Do you think it‘s really love? Should I get involved or mind my business?

The Healing Power of Your Smile

A

ll healing begins inside your body and we are blessed with a wonderful tool for healing: our smile.

When you smile your hormones are released that create a relaxing state of being. Even if you fake your smile endorphins will be released and your mood will change. Try it now fake a smile hold it for a few seconds and take

note how you feel. If you are frightened or nervous a smile will allow you to calm down; sometimes this happens involuntarily.

Smiling allows the muscles in the face to send signals to the brain that all is well.

The brain will then send relaxing signals along the body’s nervous system. After taking a hard blow to the head, a fighter will often smile to regain focus. When I give Ki Energy stress management treatments at our Ki Center; I often suggest for clients to smile while receiving the treatment. Smiling

during meditation allows for an enhanced sense of oneness; it can also be very therapeutic.

The Inner Smile is an ancient Taoist healing technique that allows the healing power of a smile to give a person the ability to self-heal internally. Taoist master Mantak Chia explains this technique very well in the “Chi Nei Tsang”, his internal organs Chi massage manual; when he writes: “The Inner Smile is a powerful relaxation technique which begins at mid-eyebrow

and eyes. It utilizes the expanding energy of happiness as a language to communicate with the internal organs of the body.”

Master Chia goes on to say: “By learning to smile inwardly to the organs and glands, the body will feel loved and appreciated.” At the Ki Center we teach a Korean Qigong exercise called Heaven and Earth. The technique allows the student to focus on internal healing by visualizing and smiling at all of the internal organs in the body.

of your body, focus on that area and smile at it. If you continue to do this, you will assist in your internal healing process. As many of you know, I have firsthand experience on the healing power of smiling at internal injuries; it worked for me. We might not realize the healing power of our smile but it is very real.

It works and it is very easy to do.

Smiling can also be contagious. If you smile at someone long enough they will smile back sometimes unknowingly. The smile can not only be used as a tool for self-heal-

ing, it can also be used as a tool to heal others.

A smile can be very helpful in changing the mood of another.

One should also be aware that not all smiling faces have a foundation of love.

Sometimes a smile can be used to manipulate.

More often than not the energy of a smile can be healing. The next time you feel a need to change your mood, smile; even if you feel you have nothing to smile about. The healing power of your smile is very powerful. Learn to use it to improve the quality of your life.

t’s a new year-and you’re already behind the eight ball.

You make the same resolutions again and again to no avail. Well, it’s time that you took a long, hard look at why you hold yourself back! I’m not talking about the psychological reasons behind your inability to lose a

few pounds or to stop smoking. I want to talk instead about the fact that you’re not saving money.

When I was coming up, I remember my dad sitting down to pay the bills each month, and before forking over anything to anyone else, he would pay himself first. It didn’t take me long to understand the concept. It did, however, take me awhile to follow in his footsteps once I started to earn money. It seemed such a simple thing to do ... pay myself first!

Needless to say, month after month I foolishly neglected me and in so doing allowed money into someone else’s

coffers that should have been and would still be mine had I not allowed it to flow right through my fingers. Others benefited from my largesse, no problem, but I was left empty-handed!

I don’t like being empty-handed. So I decided to change that once and for all ... I started paying myself first! I gave myself whatever I could afford each month, sometimes $10, other times a couple of hundred, but always something. We can all benefit from investing in ourselves, and I hope that the following suggestions help.

Don’t forget that it is sometimes necessary to sacrifice something in

order to meet your goal.

This could mean taking a bag lunch to work instead of buying a burger and fries, but your goal is more important.

As you begin working your plan to save, after a while it becomes fun! You will begin to notice how much money you’ve been wasting and you won’t be able to justify frivolous expenditures anymore.

I’m not saying you can’t enjoy life’s pleasures. You’ll simply reevaluate your immediate needs to become fiscally fit! After all ... you’re worth it! See you next week!

ou really can’t remember.

For sure, something important happened years ago, something you should recall very easily, but time’s made things fuzzy. Have you forgotten or, worse yet, have you just remembered everything wrong? Usually, you suppose, it wouldn’t matter but in the new book “The Blood of Emmett Till” by Timothy B. Tyson, it surely does.

For decades, Carolyn Bryant Donham didn’t talk about Emmett Till, her accusations, or his murder in 1955. Stories about that day swirled through the years, in court and out, depending on who was asked, but she kept mum until she read a book by Tyson, about a similar

incident that happened 15 years after Till was killed.

She reached out to Tyson, he claims, ready to talk.

She’d written a biography, she said, and wanted it, and some other documents, to be archived appropriately. She denied remembering much, really, but it was during one of their interviews that Carolyn, at whom Till supposedly flirted, dropped a bombshell: she said Till never did what he was accused of doing.

He didn’t do it.

Contrary to popular notions, says Tyson, it’s unlikely that Emmett Till wasn’t aware of the dangers of interacting with white folks in 1955 Mississippi.

Chicago, where Till grew up, was segregated, too, and he’d surely heard northward-migrat-

ing Mississippians talk about trouble. Fourteen years old and filled with adolescence, he knew the dangers but he might have underestimated them.

He’d begged his mother to let him take a train south to visit kin. She’d probably warned him anew of the risks; Mamie Till Mobley had lived in Mississippi, and she knew that “Citizens Councils” existed in the South, that they’d use intimidation and violence as tools of enforcement.

had also been released not long before and she must’ve sensed that the South was bubbling when Emmett Till stepped into

a grocery store in Money, Mississippi.

He was there, they claimed, less than a minute…

As author Timothy B. Tyson says, we may never know exactly what happened on that day in 1955. Some key people are dead, some have memories muddied by time or threats – but with those facts in mind, there’s still no denying that “The Blood of Emmett Till,” contains historical TNT. Donham’s confession aside (as if that’s not reason enough to read this book), Tyson does a fine job recounting what happened to Till, and afterward. No book on Till is com-

plete without that, but the difference is that this one seems to ferret out small details that feel more uncommon; absolutely, Tyson gives additional back-story to Till, his mother, their family, to the accuser and her family, and to the atmosphere that surrounded them then. Those things are interesting – they’ll keep you reading – but that’s probably not what you’d come to this book for.

Indeed, this is as hot-button as they come, and it’s likely not the definitive word on this murder. Stay tuned – and in the meantime, “The Blood of Emmett Till” is the title to remember.

The NNPA also invited 150 students from area schools to participate in a NNPA Student Education Program featuring a presentation on the Every Stu-

dent Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Reverend William J. Barber II, the president of the state conference of the NAACP in North Carolina will deliver the keynote ad-

dress on Wednesday, January 25.

“We anticipate a strong message from Reverend William J. Barber, II, who will offer a spiritual and social justice blueprint upon which the publishers can refer as they report on local and national stories,” said Rolark Barnes. “And, with a laser focus on education, we plan to have a comprehensive discussion on the ways that the Black Press can raise public awareness about the ESSA, the new law aimed at providing every child equal access to a quality education regardless of race, income, background, or the zip code where they live.”

This year, the NNPA will honor iconic publisher Robert W. Bogle, the

president and CEO of the Philadelphia Tribune, with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rolark Barnes called Bogle a leader in his community and a forthright advisor to many who seek his counsel.

“We rededicate our businesses and our energies to the essential mission of speaking and publishing truth to power,” said Chavis. “We especially thank our partners: General Motors, Chevrolet, Ford Motor Company, Reynolds American Inc. If we look at the issue from a patient centered and physician centered context it boils down to the young and healthy or non-elderly signing up to “pay their fair share” to ease the burden on the entire system including those truly without the means to pay a dime.

Look at it this way. One way or the other we all pay.

The question is, do we pay on the front end where we know our fees and have some level of control of our dollars or do we pay on the back end where the healthcare costs are as unknown and endless as the dollars we will flood into the system –the result of uncompensated care.
