Plan for Harlem’s Iconic Lenox Terrace Approved by City Planning Commission

T

he largest private affordable housing initiative in Harlem took a major step forward as the City Planning Commission voted 11-1 (with one abstention) to approve the plan for Lenox Terrace.

More than 60 years after The Olnick Organization built Lenox Terrace, the plan will add approximately 400-500 affordable apartments – including some 160 units available to people earning minimum wage – new neighborhood-focused shops and restaurants, six acres of landscaped green space, and a wide array of amenities available to all Lenox Terrace residents, all at no additional cost to current residents.

The project is expected to create over 2,700 on-site construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs, and result in the spending of several hundred million dollars at area businesses. It also will include a new home and urban farm space for Harlem Grown, the beloved community-based nonprofit.

“The best way to keep Harlem affordable is to create more affordable housing, and at Lenox Terrace that is only feasible through the proposed rezoning,” said Seth Schochet, president of The Olnick Organization. “Today’s approval by the City Planning Commission puts the largest private affordable housing ini-

Voza Rivers to receive the Harlem Fine Arts Lifetime Achievement Award – Feb 13 The Riverside Church

he New York 2020 Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS) will present it’s LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD to Producer Voza Rivers on Thursday, February 13th @ Riverside Church ( 91 Claremont Avenue) at 5PM.

HFAS is the the largest traveling Africian Diasporic art show in the United States.

Since its inception in 2009 inspired by the Harlem Renaissance HFAS provides a platform for African Diasporic visionaries as well as American visual artists to exhibit and sell their artwork. The exhibit tour has travelled to 10 plus cities as well as showcased over 100 artists and galleries.

Voza Rivers is a New York producer, living in Harlem, who has produced some of the most trendsetting works of the 20th century, including works by celebrated South African writer/actor/director Mbongeni Negema: OBIE win-

ner Woza Albert!, TONY nominated Asinamali! and TONY nominated Sarafina! In 1969, Ngema, Hugh Masekela and Rivers were nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Show Album for Sarafina! lacks are on Broadway in multitudes in productions that run the gamete. There are 32 Broadway productions with 23 musicals and 9 plays in 2020. You see the names of playwrights like Dominique Morriseau, who hit the scene last year with “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times of the Temptations”, Katori Hall, new at the end of 2019 with “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” and Charles Fuller with “A Soldier’s Play". 2020 is a time when we can lift up our eyes to the Broadway stage, whether it be at a play or musical and behold stunning performances by legendary artists and new Black artists who are making their mark.

There are also many exciting productions to come in 2020. Going to Broadway productions is an opportunity to laugh, cry, feel inspired and be overwhelmed with pride to see our people giving their all!

“Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations,” features a book by African American playwright Dominique Morisseau, music and lyrics from Motown and is based on the book entitled “The Temptations” by Otis Williams. “American Buffalo” begins March 24. The revival of the David Mamet play will tell the story of three hustlers trying to achieve the American dream. It will star Tony Award winner Laurence Fishburne as Donny.

“Beetlejuice”, is a musical, based on the movie of the same name. It has a book by Anthony King and Scott Brown, and music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect. The musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a teenager who asks a ghost to help her scar her parents out of their new home. Ensemble members

include: Gilbert L. Bailey II; Johnny Brantley III and Ramone Owens.

“Birthday Candles” will begins April 2. The play by Noah Haidle tells the story of Ernestine Ashworth, a woman who reaches 101 years old and wonders, “What makes a lifetime into a life." The play will star EmmyAward winner Andre Braugher as Matt and feature Christopher Livingston as Billy/John.

“The Book of Mormon” was created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker. This musical deals with the Mormon faith. Derrick Williams plays the General; Sterling Jarvis plays Mafala Hatimbi and Kim Exum plays Nabulungi.

“Caroline, Or Change” will begin March 13. The musical features book and lyrics by Tony Kushner, music by Jeanine Tesori, and tells the story of Caroline, a maid in 1963 Louisiana who has to find a way to dealing with the changes happening

in the world. The musical will star Sharon D. Clarke as Caroline and features several performers including Alexander Bellos as Joe Thibodeaux; Arica Jackson as Washing Machine; Chinua Baraka Payne as Jackie Thibodeaux; Harper Miles as Harper Miles; Nasia Thomas a Radio 1; Nya as Radio 2 and Tamika Lawrence as Dotty Moffett.

“Chicago” is a great musical to experience about the women of murderess row. It features captivating music, book and lyrics by John Dander and Fred Ebb, Raena White stars as Matron Mama Morton; and it features Arian Keddell as Mona and Jermaine R. Rembert as Martin Harrison. Sharon Moore is Swing.

“Come From Away” is a musical about when the community of Gander, Newfoundland hosted passengers from 38 planes that were diverted to their air strip due to the attack on 9/11. It has a book, music and lyrics by David Kein and Irene Sankoff. De’Lon Grant plays as Bob and others and Kenita R. Miller plays as Hannah O’Rourke and Others.

“Company” will play beginning March 2. The musical comedy features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, a book by George Furth, and will tell the story of Bobbie who is celebrating her 35th birthday and being questioned by her friends about not being married with a family. The show will feature Nikki Renee Daniels as Jenny; Terence Archie as Larry and Rashidra Scott as Susan.

“Dear Evan Hansen” has a book by Steven Levenson, music and lyrics by Benj

Written by Tracy Letts, the play takes a look at the inner working of a city council meeting in the small town of

“Moulin Rouge: The Musical” has a book by John Logan. As Bohemians and Aristocrats mingle, this musical is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and love. It stars Sahr Ngaujah as Toulouse-Lautrec. “Mrs. Doubtfire” will play beginning March 9.

The musical has a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, and music supervision by Ethan Popp. Based on the Twentieth Century Fox Motion Picture it tells the story of out-of-work actor Daniel Hillard who loses custody of his children in a divorce and disguises himself as Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire to stay in his children’s lives. The musical will feature Charity Angel Dawson as Wanda Sellner and J. Harrison Ghee as Andre.

“The Phantom of the Opera” has a mesmerizing book by composer Andre Lloyd Webber. It is a story of love, betrayal, and obsession. Once you see it once you will need to see it repeatedly. “A Soldier’s Play” is written by Charles Fuller.

The play, about the murder of a Black Sergeant Waters on an Army base in the 1940s and the investigation that follows is mesmerizing to watch. Director Kenny Leon also intensifies the storyline with the use of blues songs used throughout. It also features a mainly Black cast.

Leading that cast are David Alan Grier as Sergeant Vernon C. Waters and Blair Underwood as Captain Richard Davenport. The company of soldiers are played by J. Alphonse Nicholson—Private C.J. Memphis; Nnamdi Asomugha—Private First Class Melvin Peterson; McKinley Belcher III—Private Louis Henson; Rob Demery—Corporal Bernard Cobb; Jared Grimes—Private Tony Smalls; Billy Eugene Jones—Private James Wilkie and Warner Miller— Corporal Ellis.

“Take Me Out” will play beginning April 2. Written

by Richard Greenberg, the play celebrates the personal and professional intricacies of baseball, specifically looking at a star center fielder’s life after he comes out of

the closet. The play will feature Jesse Williams as Darren Lemming and Brandon J. Dirden as Davey Battle.

“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” has a marvelous book by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins. The production has musical supervision, arrangements, additional music and conducted by Nicholas Skilbeck. The musical tells the story of Tina Turner’s life—her struggles, her triumphs and does it in grand fashion filled with her most memorable hits. The musical is superbly lead by powerhouse performer Adrienne Warren as Tina Turner.

Co-stars include Daniel J. Watts as Ike Turner’ Dr. Dawnn Lewis as Zelma; Nkeki Obi-Melekwe as Tina at some performance; Myra Lucretia Taylor as Gran Georgeanna; and Skye Turner as Young Anna Mae. Featured actors include: Gloria Manning as Young Alline; Jayden Theophile and Antonio J. Watson who alternate as Young Craig; Gerald Caesar as Raymond King/ Ensemble; Holli Conway as Ikette/Ensemble; Kayla Davion as Ikette/Ensemble; Mattthew Griffin as Craig/ Ensemble; David Jennings as Richard Bullock/Ensemble; Jhardon Dishon Milton as Ronnie/Ensemble; Destinee Rea as Ikette/Ensemble; and Mars Rucker as Alline/

Ikette/Ensemble.

“To Kill A Mockingbird” is a play by Aaron Sorkin, based on Harper Lee’s classic story. It tells the story of Atticus Finch, a White lawyer defending a Black man accused of raping a White woman in Malcomb, Alabama in 1934. Kyle Scatliffe stars as Tom Robinson, the accused. LisaGay Hamilton stars as Calpurnia, the housekeeper of Atticus Finch. Ensemble members include: Rosalyn Coleman and Yaegel T. Welch.

“West Side Story” based on a conception by Jerome Robbins has a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The musical tells the story of young gangs, racism and love. Shereen Pimental stars as Maria. Featured cast members include: Dharon E. Jones as Riff; Ahmad Simmons as Diesel; Satori Folkes-Stone as Margarita; Jordan Dobson as Glad Hewd/ Krupke; Michelle Mercedes as Clarice; Zuri Noelle Ford as Anybodys and Matthew Johnson as Baby John.

“Wicked” is a musical that will have you looking at the story of “The Wizard of Oz” in a completely different way. It gives you the background of the Wicked Witch and Glenda, the Good. It has memorable music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, and direction

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” (Part 1 and Part 2) is based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. Thorne created the play. This play is done in two separate 4-hour parts, but it doesn’t feel long and you sit in the same seats for each presentation. You can either see the show on the course of two days or do a double-header, seeing it on Wednesday or Saturday, when you can see two shows. It’s an experience you will never forget! It stars Jenny Jules as Hermoine Granger, and Nadia Brown as Rose Granger-Weasley.

“The Inheritance” is a play with a book by Matthew Lopez and runs in 2-parts. It asks how much we owe those who lived and loved before us, questions the role we must play for future generations and dares us to fearlessly hold onto life. It features Jordan Barbour as Young Man 6/ Tristan; Jonathan Burke as Young Man 5/Agent; Darryl Gene Daughtry as Young Man 2/Jason#1.

“Jagged Little Pill” is a new musical with lyrics by Alanis Morissette, music by Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard and a book by Diablo Cody. It tells the story of the Healy family, drug addiction and family relationships. It stars Celie Rose Gooding as Frankie Healy and has ensemble members Max Kumangai, DeAnne Stewart and Ebony Williams with Yeman Brown as Swing.

A Doctor’s Common-Sense Approach to Heartburn Relief (Statepoint)

ndigestion is on the rise worldwide and is especially prevalent in the U.S. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, 60 million Americans suffer from heartburn at least once a month. s we bury ourselves in a blustery February, we look to Black History Month to reflect a brighter light. An important part of Black History in New York City is found in an unlikely oasis: Central Park.

Central Park used to be home to a place called Seneca Village, a 19th-century settlement of mostly African-American landowners in Manhattan. The settlement was located on about 5 acres on the Upper West Side, between 82nd and 89th Streets and 7th and 8th Avenues, before those streets existed.

Seneca Village was the first community of its kind in NYC, founded in 1825 by free Blacks. The community had 264 residents, 3 churches, a school, and 2 cemeteries at its height. The origin of the name is uncertain. It was later inhabited by several other minorities, including Irish and German immigrants. The community existed until 1857 when through eminent domain, the villagers were ordered to leave and their houses were torn down for the construction of Central Park.

The land was originally purchased by a white farmer named John Whitehead in 1824. A year later, Whitehead began selling off lots. At the time, the area was far from the center of NYC, which was populated south of 23rd Street. In 1825 a young African American man named Andrew Williams purchased three lots from the Whiteheads and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church bought 12 lots. More

African Americans moved to Seneca Village after slavery in New York was outlawed in 1827. Later, during the potato famine in Ireland, many Irish immigrants came to live in the village. Seneca Village’s residents were marginalized and faced discrimination throughout the city.

Residents were not wealthy; they worked in service industries and as domestic servants. Some fished in the East River and the Hudson River and gathered firewood from forests while some had gardens, barns, and livestock.

The houses were not professionally constructed, yet their interiors were an improvement on the overstuffed tenements of Lower Manhattan. Land ownership among black residents was much higher than that of the city as a whole; more than half of blacks owned property in 1850.

By the 1840s, members of the city’s elite were demanding the construction of a large park in Manhattan. Two of

the leaders of this initiative were William Cullen Bryant, the editor of the New York Evening Post, and Andrew Jackson Downing, one of the first American landscape designers. All of the inhabitants of Seneca Village were evicted by 1857, and all of the properties within Central Park were demolished. The only building from Seneca Village to survive was All Angels’ Church, which relocated a couple of blocks away.

Seneca Village was largely forgotten until 1992, the publication of Roy Rosenzweig and Elizabeth Blackmar’s book The Park and the People: A History of Central Park. This fascinating social history led to The Seneca Village Project, formed in 1998 to raise awareness. Archeological digs have been conducted since and in 2001 and a historical plaque was unveiled, commemorating

Seneca Village and the people who called it home.

Changing Lives One Book at a Time

By: W.A. Rogers he Harlem Restoration Project (HRP) will officially open their bookstore in time to celebrate Black History Month on Saturday February 15th. For over 30 years The Harlem Restoration Project has provided comprehensive services such as a thrift shop; affordable housing; job referrals and development counseling; and vocational and educational

referrals for ex-offenders and homeless individuals leaving the shelter system navigating the complex re-entry process.

During the early nineties Mayor Koch, and later Mayor Dinkins, acknowledged that people living in the shelter system need more than a place to live; they also needed independent learning skills funds were developed to create programs like HRP. This also is true for ex-offenders HRP has a major focus on assisting men and women who are long-term offenders.

It is difficult to imagine how a 72-year-old person who has been in the prison system for over forty years, with no family or a place to live and only

$40.00, can navigate their re-entry process without a great deal of support. Director of HRP Professor Ricky Jones informed me that close to 6,000 ex-offenders re-enter West and Central Harlem each year.

Many come to HRP for help and guidance.

The HRP Book Store located at 1980 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd will be an educational resource center for the community, said Professor Jones. The Bookstore and a reading initiative program will be available for young people in local schools, community-based organizations and religious groups. The store will be open to the public Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00am to 6:00pm

I was invited by Professor Jones to be the first author to have a book signing at the HRP Book Store on Saturday February 15th at 2:00pm and I hope to set a precedent for future authors by donating half of the book sale proceeds to the HRP Reading Initiative.

Professor Jones is a faculty member at two private colleges, teaching philosophy, psychology and African History.

Professor Jones was incarcerated for over 12 years. He and Malcolm X are excellent examples of the possibilities a multidisciplinary re-entry support system can manifest.

When we talk about prison reform, we must ask the question “if it takes $200,000 per year to keep one person in person; why

can’t there be a larger investment in the re-entry system?”

HRP will participate in Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (H2W) from April 25th to May 2nd (www.

H2W.nyc) by encouraging their clients and tenets to attend the wellness expos and events to learn natural wellness and heath options. The organization is also developing a youth martial arts program with the New Breed martial arts organization.

Keys in the ignition, rear view mirror’s been adjusted, steering wheel is set for maximum comfort. You’re ready to go, ready for this trip to get started. In “Driving While Black” by Gretchen Sorin, you’re heading back in history.

Few things in America have altered the cultural scene more than the automobile. Not only has it changed the way we move, it affected the way we dress, talk, and eat. But, says Sorin, for Black folks, the automobile has “meant something different” – mainly, “the automobile made it more difficult… to enforce racial apart-

heid while cruising along the highways at forty-five miles per hour.”

Once was a time that Black people couldn’t travel far, if at all. Moving about from plantation to plantation allowed opportunities for slaves to escape or, at the very least, to learn the lay of the land, neither of which was desirable for a slave’s owner. Even free Blacks were restricted from too much movement then.

After the Civil War ended, former slaves began to head north for work and to escape Jim Crow laws, a Great Migration that didn’t preclude the occasional trip back South by rail or by bus to visit friends and relatives.

There was still segregation in travel but the bigger fact was that travel itself was no longer restricted.

Starting around the 1920s, automobile ownership began to be a possibility for mobile (and upwardly-mobile) African Americans. This meant even more freedom – a road could lead almost anywhere – but it could also mean danger, if you accidentally went where you weren’t welcome. On the other hand, you could sleep in the car, depending on the kind you bought; some vehicles were faster, and could outrun violence; others meant fewer fill-ups. Restroom stops, if you were Black, were still an issue.

By the 1970s, Sorin

says, this was all mostly a moot point. The Civil Rights Movement had changed the country, and segregation at hotels and gas stations was a thing of the past. And yet today, once again, DWB comes with a whole different set of dangers…

Here it’s not even spring, and you already know where you’re going on vacation this year. If you haven’t packed a book yet, “Driving While Black” is the right one to take.

If this seems like old news, it’s not: Sorin also shows us things we don’t often consider, including tales of Black musicians’ reliance on freer travel, how sports were changed by fewer restrictions, and how Black drivers accidentally taught white business owners a lesson or two.

Sorin even adds personal anecdotes to the openings of her chapters, making “Driving While Black” a great vacation (or anytime) read. If you’re needing a smart, comprehensive look at the history of travel, grab it and buckle up.
