During my young years in Savannah, I did not just read about segregation and the civil rights movement. I lived through it. Black and white public toilets, water fountains, movie theaters, schools. Manage Your Finances Beyond The Grave

A

lifetime of hard work may have rewarded you with a nice home and hefty bank accounts, but what happens to all those assets once you’re gone?

Maybe you want everything to go to the kids. Perhaps a charity or a cause you champion should get a portion.

And what happens if, before you die, your mental capacity diminishes and you can no longer make decisions for yourself?

Just thinking about your final wishes – or mentioning them to a close friend over coffee – isn’t enough.

“I believe too many people don’t do the proper planning to make sure that any wealth they’ve accumulated over the years ends up where they want it to,” says Jaime Cowper, president of Unity Financial Advisors (www.unityfinancialadvisors.net).

“Of course, that’s not going to cause any problems for the deceased because they’ll be gone. Those left behind, though, could end up feuding over property, paying more taxes than necessary, or just becoming stressed as they try to put together the puzzle pieces of your estate.”

But you don’t have to leave your heirs guessing about your intentions. Cowper suggests an estate-management checklist to make sure everything is in order.

And if you’re lacking with any item on the list, she says, a financial professional can help steer you in the right direction.

• A will. This is perhaps the best known document for letting your final wishes be known, yet it’s not as widely used as you might assume. Just 36 percent of American adults have a will, according to a Rocket Lawyer estate-planning survey by Harris Poll. If you don’t have one, it’s time to remedy that. “It’s especially important to have a will if you have minor children because you can use the will to name a guardian for them,” Cowper says.

• Healthcare documents. Like it or not, as you near the end of your life you could reach a point where you’re no longer capable of making medical decisions for yourself. The right documents can spell out your wishes for health care and you can also name someone to make the decisions for you if it comes to that. Documents you should consider include a living will, a power of attorney agreement and a durable power of attorney agreement for healthcare.

• Financial documents. Similar to the health situation, you can also outline your financial wishes and appoint someone to make financial decisions for you if you become unable to make decisions for

yourself, Cowper says.

Documents to consider include joint ownership, durable power of attorney, and living trusts.

• Beneficiary forms.

In some cases, when you name a beneficiary for bank accounts and retirement plans, they automatically become “payable on death” to your beneficiaries. In other cases, you must fill out a form to make the accounts payable on death. Why is payable on death such an important distinction? The beneficiaries can get their money without the potential delays caused by probate.

Finally, make sure your heirs know where to find all of your important documents.

“When you’ve done all this planning, you don’t want to leave your heirs searching through closets, attics and dresser drawers in search of your important papers,” Cowper says.

“You won’t be there to guide them, so someone should know exactly where to look.”

onoring the Legacies of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Charles B. Rangel during Black History Month Today, U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY13) released the following statement in recognition of African American political trailblazers, former Congressmen Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Charles B. Rangel, of New York’s 13th Congressional District: “During Black History Month, as a representative of New York’s 13th district, it is incumbent on me to highlight and celebrate the rich history of my predecessors, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Congressman Charles B. Rangel,” said Rep. Espaillat.

“First elected in 1944, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was the first

African-American to represent any district of New York in the United States Congress and he served the Harlem community for more than two decades.

During his tenure, Congressman Powell worked tirelessly to raise the minimum wage, supported education and training for the hearing impaired, bolstered vocational training and endeavored to provide continued aid to elementary and secondary schools and public libraries.

“Congressman Charles B. Rangel represented Harlem for nearly 50 years beginning in the New York State Legislature and then in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He is a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and rose among his peers to chair the powerful House Committee on Ways and Means. Congressman

Rangel’s place in African American history transcends Harlem and New York City as he dedicated his career in public service advocating for non-discrimination, developing urban neighborhoods and protecting veterans like himself from disfranchisement in communities across the nation.

oday, we face an affordability crisis that threatens New York’s very soul.

Everywhere I go, people tell me they feel their ability to remain here slipping away. On Monday, I devoted my annual State of the City speech to telling New Yorkers about how we are tackling affordability and to deliver a simple message: This is still your city.

But for that to remain true, we will need more good jobs so New Yorkers can stay New Yorkers. Our goal is to create through direct investment 100,000 permanent jobs paying at least $50,000 a year over the next decade. We will focus on industries where we already have an edge, like film and television, life sciences and tech.

Entrepreneurs are creating businesses in these sectors right here, because they love the talent we have and the opportunities our dynamic, international marketplace offers. And every industry I named has an average salary in

And now, we’re announcing an important new initiative in Sunset Park Brooklyn, our Made in New York campus. This is going to be the new center of garment manufacturing and a new film and TV studio. Combined this new business hub will create 1,500 permanent jobs.

This is personal for me, because my grand-

parents came here from Italy and worked in the garment industry. Like today’s New Yorkers, my grandparents weren’t asking for a free lunch. All they wanted was a chance to succeed.

They worked hard. They struggled. In the end, they made it.

That is the story of this city. Our job, our responsibility, is to honor that history by giving the next generation the same opportunity our ancestors had.

Marcus Samuelsson and Red Rooster Celebrate Female Chefs of Color

R

Chef Lee Anne Wong’s “Warm Salad of Grains and Peas” was next, a very healthy and refreshing dish served with Hakurei turnips, winter squash, toasted curry brown butter, housemade labneh, and chiles.

The next dish is by Red Rooster Harlem’s own Chef Rossanne Pena aka Chef Rosie, a Dominican-born food stylist who was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, who adds “Pan Seared Branzino” with charred poblano, pickled kumquats, blood orange aioli, crisp herb salad. This fish dish was quite tasty and educational, as I wasn’t familiar with branzino, a European seabass, before the meal.

Outside of the cornbread, my favorite dish of the evening was “Puerco

con Calabaza,” braised pork butt, mashed pumpkin, toasted pumpkin seeds, and cilantro. The braised pork butt was ecstasy in my mouth, as I may or may not have sighed after tasting it. Created by Chef Zarela Martinez, mother of Aarón Sanchez and pioneer restauranteur in New York City for opening Zarela in 1987, this dish was calling my name for several days after.

Finally, dessert was “Molasses Pecan Pie with Bourbon Ice Cream,” sweet flaky dough, molasses and pecans, bourbon ice-cream.

Created by Chef “Princess” Pamela Strobel, a pioneer in the work of soul food, knew that molasses pecan pie and bourbon ice cream are good desserts, but combining the two make for a great ending to a superb meal.

The Black History Month menu at Red Rooster Harlem is available for the month of February and also includes a special wine pairing to add. This menu that celebrates female chefs of color delivers from a historic perspective and for the palate. I strongly suggest you get there for it before it is gone!

This dish was inspired by Lillian Harris Dean, a black woman who became known as “Pig Foot Mary” for her creativity with pigs’ feet, hog maws, chitterlings in Harlem in the 1920s.

Black History Month: A Toast to My People

I

humbly express an unabated love and gratitude for all those who fought and died so that I could walk the road of freedom. We, the Diaspora, have been on a constant road of recovery and discovery since our ancestors first arrived on these shores. We have struggled with our identity from “cargo” to Colored to Negro to Black to African American and finally American. We are Americans who have contributed positively to every facet of American society. We are beyond a shadow of a doubt, simultaneously African Americans.

We must never forget the horrors of the beginning of our journey here but, more importantly, we must always remember the victories, remember to pass the knowledge on in love, giving strength to others. It is a harsh truth to speak but because of these transitions everyone who looks like you is not your friend and everyone who looks different from you is not your enemy.

So, that being said, bravely speak truth to anyone and be humble enough not to use it as a vicious weapon. Truth does its job all on its own. All you have to do is speak it and be it.

Instead of complaining, create change. Educate. Share and keep an open mind as we are still growing along with everyone else. Each one teach one. Come what may we will survive and thrive. Maya Angelou captured our determination in her famous quote featured at the National African Burial Ground: “You may bury me in the bottom of Manhattan.

I will rise. My people will get me.” Hold on to the history and pass it on.

Harlem Fine Arts Show opening night draws nearly 3K for salute to African Americans in Medicine

ore than 1,500 people packed Riverside Church for an opening gala reception for the 8th annual Harlem Fine Arts Show. The reception was also a salute to African

American medical professionals in the Tri-State area, where 16 practitioners were recognized.

The four-day traveling exhibition and sale of contemporary paintings, sculpture, and photog-

raphy is the largest of its kind featuring art from the African Diaspora.

The HFAS Opening Night preview event, a Salute to African Americans in Medicine (AAIM), follows the theme of this year’s annual multi-city tour, the ‘Health and Healing Power of Art.” HFAS showcases and celebrates African Americans in the field and raises awareness about medicine as a career choice for young people.

A portion of the proceeds from the HFAS will fund scholarships to be awarded to African American students pursuing medicine as a career. The evening, hosted by the Brooklyn Alumni Chapter

of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., also included the presentation of a Special Achievement Award to Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Abyssinian Baptist Church. Rev. Butts was presented with a specially done portrait and each of the doctors received art work denoting their professions.

First held in February 2010 in New York City,

the Harlem Fine Arts Show has attracted more than 80,000 visitors to venues including Martha’s Vineyard, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and New York. Attendees include collectors, art enthusiasts, educators, students, and professionals.

Over 80 nationally and internationally known artists, including Leroy Campbell, Ted Ellis, An-

drew Nichols, Paul Goodnight, Michael Escoffery, Frank Frazier, Woodrow Nash, Andrew Nichols, Brenda Joysmith, and Glenn Tunstull have been a part of the show. E

very few days now, an afternoon holds the promise of spring, and people everywhere are thinking about running again. Running is a great fitness activity and an exciting sport, a great source of well-being but also a potential cause of painful injuries.

The way each body part -- hips, knees, ankles and feet -- works singularly and together to produce movement is called biomechanics; a runner with good biomechanics strikes the ground and moves forward in an efficient manner. A runner with poor biomechanics of

any of these body parts -- a foot that over-rotates inward with each foot strike (pronation), for example -- is more likely to suffer an injury.

Running injuries, major and minor, are very common. Everyone, however, can follow these simple steps to avoid many minor injuries: pick a good

running shoe, one that offers good support, cushioning and comfort, and that fits with your preferred running socks. Stretch before a run and start running gradually, building time and distance slowly. Stretch after a run too.

A pain while running, however, is a signal to stop. While a podiatrist should be a serious runner’s friend, pain should bring any type of runner to a podiatrist’s office as well.

sociation (APMA) identifies these as the top five: plantar fasciitis, inflammation of a band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes, causing pain on the bottom of the foot; Achilles tendonitis, inflammation of the tendon that runs from the back of the lower leg to the back of the heel; Morton’s Neuroma, a swollen or thickened nerve in the front of the foot; stress fractures, fractures in the lower leg caused by repetitive

Good Health Mindset at the Abyssinian Church in Harlem

he importance of striving for good health has become a mindset at the Abyssinian Baptist Church, pastored by the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. The congregation is accustomed to getting health initiatives from their pastor, including the forewarning figure of speech, get a check-up from the neck-up.

The Abyssinian Health Ministry started by First Lady, Mrs. Patricia R. Butts, is soaring in its ongoing effort to bring clarity and transparency to health information in the complex gamut of health issues prevalent in African American communities.

On Sunday, February 12, the focus on good health continued with GO RED FOR HEART HEALTH. At both morning worship services, Dr. Shaun Massiah, DMD, delivered a poignant medical moment message on the ramifications of poor dental hygiene on the heart. The afternoon program, sponsored by The Abyssinian Health Ministry, Abyssinian Medical Ministry, American Heart Association and the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS in observance of Heart Health

Month included lifesaving information and testing by Mt. Sinai Hospital. Special presentations were given by Dr. Elizabeth Cohn, Dr. Olajide Williams, Neurologist and Dr. Samuel Mann, Nephrologist.

If there is any lesson from either of the above health forums, I believe it to be, procrastination is not a healthy harvest to nurture. Don’t wait for a symptom, get tested.

Interview: Comics’ First Black Superhero Series –

LAW: ...and retitled the series “Power Man and Iron Fist.”

GC3: This so-so incarnation is what I am most familiar with but again, didn’t really care. What followed in the 80s and 90s were more half-hearted runs and that damned tiara.

LAW: For years, Marvel treated the series like a “try out” book: assigning novice writers and artists to it and, if they proved good and reliable, promoting them to better known and selling books. Without consistency and commitment, Cage suffered.

But while sporadic quality contributed (mightily) to Luke Cage not being a household name, every lengthy comic series has quality dips and spikes and Cage also had some terrific runs.

GC3: Cage finally dropped the Power Man name, the puffy yellow shirt, and the tiara. With Brian Michael Bendis’ writing, Cage went from being a Hero for Hire Blaxploitation holdover to an Avenger, a father, husband and a leader. He works to create a better life for his family and, by extension, the world and all the little people that the Avengers miss while fighting cosmic threats. Cage is now a character I care about.

LAW: I never minded and don’t

think the problem was his costume or his Power Man moniker. Some fun stuff was done in his 70s costume, some garbage stuff happened in his superior 90s outfit, and some brilliant stuff’s been with him in jeans and a tee. Written poorly, Cage is a stereotypical buck or buffoon.

Written well, Cage is one of comics’ most honorable, most lovable, and funniest characters. He’s also, to paraphrase Ice Cube, “th’ wrong [one] to f#⥹k with” and knows it.

More importantly, there’s a handful of black superheroes on movie and TV screens these days, and many more on comic book store shelves each month. I

doubt m o s t of them would exist now had Cage not sustained a regular series from 1972-1986 with numerous subsequent revivals.

We differ on Cage’s comic past but like his

“save the hood, then the world” approach and agree you should

check out the Netflix series where the best aspects of the comic have found their way to the screen (albeit with tweaks) via Mike Colter, Simone Missick,

and Mahershala Ali (2017 Oscar best supporting actor nominee for his role in the indie drama “Moonlight.”)

GC3: Ali made his character, with no powers, just as dangerous as Cage. And Missick’s is just one of the series’ many amazing performances by strong women of color…

LAW: …including Rosario Dawson, Alfre Woodard, and Sônia Braga. We also enjoyed the performances a lá New York Undercover from singers Faith Evans, Raphael Saadiq, and Jidenna. There are plenty of references to real Black History Month heroes like Percy Sutton and Jackie Robinson. And the show touches topics like use of the “N” word, gentrification, and community values. But note: while Cage comics are usually PG, the TV show would get

an R movie rating.

AW: Wonder Woman and Spider-Man are amongst many superheroes known by people who’ve never touched an actual comic book. But you may not know about the first black superhero with a solo monthly comic. We’re reviewing him for Black History Month.

GC3: Carl Lucas.

Wrongfully convicted and gains superpowers in prison.

LAW: Uses superpowers to do what most innocent and sensible brothers would: breaks out and assumes an alias.

GC3: Becomes “Luke Cage, Hero for Hire,” Marvel Comics’ grab at Blaxploitation era of film trending then.

LAW: When his comic debuted in 1972, Cage was essentially an invulnerable Shaft with super strength.

GC3: But at least Shaft looked cool! Cage was --at best-- a “D” list character with a corny catchphrase, a wack costume and a really silly tiara. What grown man wears a tiara? I never cared for him.

LAW: Book sales were poor, so you weren’t alone.

Marvel thought the problem might have been his lack of a traditional superhero name, so they retitled the series, “Luke Cage, Power Man.” It didn’t work.

GC3: So Marvel teamed Cage up with Iron Fist, a character from the 70s

Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day By William A. Rogrs

F

riday March 3, 2017 is Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) Day. This annual international awareness project is coordinated by the TNBC Foundation.

TNBC Day is a global event that brings s individuals and communities together to plan fundraisers and bring awareness to this rare form of breast cancer.

Most people have never heard of TNBC unless a family member or friend has been diagnosed with it. In my case it

was a few weeks ago that my cousin and publisher of HCN Inc., Pat Stevenson informed me that she had been diagnosed with TNBC. There is not a lot of funding for TNBC because it is a very rare form of cancer that mainly affects African-American and Jewish women.

There are many different subtypes of breast cancer.

These subtypes are generally diagnosed based upon the presence or lack of three receptors known to fuel most breast cancers: estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Successful breast cancer treatments target these three receptors.

None of these receptors are found in women diagnosed with TNBC. Triple negative breast

cancer is diagnosed when the breast tumor is estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative and HER2-negative; giving rise to the name “Triple Negative Breast Cancer”. Fortunately TNBC is responsive to chemotherapy but due to the cancers triple negative status the tumors do not generally respond to receptor targeted treatments like other types of breast cancer.

If discovered early this very aggressive type of cancer can be placed into remission. Ricki Fairley, the first African-American board chair of the TNBC Foundation is a TNBC survivor. The TNBC Foundation was founded in 2006 in honor of Nancy Block-Zenna, who was diagnosed at the young age of 35 with TNBC before succumbing to the disease in

2007. Friends of Nancy created the foundation to serve as a central source of information and support for women with this rare and dangerously aggressive form of breast cancer.

Studies have shown that women diagnosed with any type of breast cancer have greater rates of survival and lower rates of disease recurrences if they have social ties and support. Researchers now believe that social ties are associated with improved overall survival, reduced mortality from breast cancer and improved overall survival with less recurrence in all types of breast cancer. I am often reminded of the saying “God has a plan”.

ow do we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King?

I was a young child during the height of the civil rights movement. I can’t say that I remember much. I can, however, recall the adults whispering and praying for something that I did not understand and I remember hearing his name . . . DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING! There seemed to be so much reverence attached to the

were aggressively taunting people who appeared to be remarkably calm . . .and seemingly protected by white men in dark uniforms.

The people with dark skin had their arms locked in a calm but firm link, as if a gentleman would offer his arm to a lady to keep her and hold her steady on her feet. It was row after row of gentle people giving one another steady support. Their eyes seemed to look beyond wherever they were at that moment in time. In hindsight . . . perhaps they were looking to the future and physically moving toward it at the same time. They were marching for freedom and equality during a time when we were denied the most basic dignities . . . the right to have access to public facilities like bathrooms, restaurants, swimming pools and

words. Who was he? To me, at the time, just a man I heard the adults talking about, nothing more. It was “grown-ups business.” Little did I know that the business of grown-ups would have such a profound impact on my life. Funny though, that I can recall images I saw in the newspaper and from Ebony magazine and the black and white television set in my parents’ living room.

They were, in retrospect, grainy, gritty, disturbing and downright scary. Most disturbing, of course, were the fire hoses spewing water at people; dogs with their teeth bared and mouths twisted, mobs of people, angry people, whose expressions seemed to mimic that of the dogs, silent insults and terror frozen by the camera’s lens. There were two sides, it seemed. The white people

fears (Will I have enough? Will I run out? Will it go up in price?) and your paper pile, it’s time to set good habits – starting with inventory. What’s in your supply room? You’ll never overbuy if you know. Make time to organize, even if it’s just a minute; and always make “a last sweep” before lights-out, so you don’t start the day with a mess. Limit new purchases, “buy less but better,” and remember that nobody’s ever perfect.

“What we want,” says Sullivan, “is joy… and to know where we put the car keys – and those things, my friends, are within your grasp.”

So you say you don’t remember what color the top of your desk is. The corners of your workspace are piled with boxes.

Get a pen – there’s one somewhere in that mess – and write down “Organized Enough.”

Chances are, you’ve been down this very unkempt road before, and you might ask what makes this book different from several thousand others on the subject. This: author Amanda Sullivan isn’t proposing that you keep everything one-hundred-percent ship-shape. She only aims to help the ship stay afloat with fewer items in the cargo hold and an unobstructed captain’s chair.

That means no guilt and no pressure. Use the advice that’s applicable, discard what’s not, no problems. And if that’s what it takes, then this book is what you need. “Organized Enough” might just work for you.

ou know exactly where Monday’s report is.

That, of course, doesn’t mean anybody else could find it. You put that report in a safe place in your office, which is organized to work for you. But is it really organized, or is it just a mess?

Admit it: it’s probably the latter and nobody’s perfect, but with “Organized Enough” by Amanda Sullivan, you might find a perfect solution.

You promised yourself on January 1 that you’d keep your office clean and your desk clear.

Same with your home: who needs 10 blue sweaters or 8 pairs of black shoes, anyhow? First of the year, you were going to become a neatnik.

But of course, that’s “not sustainable,” says Sullivan. You set yourself up for perfection (and therefore, failure), when you should strive instead for “organized enough.”

The first step, she says, is to “Go with the FLOW.” Forgive yourself for the things you impulsively bought or wasted money on. Understand that you can “Let stuff go,” starting with one small corner and 10 minutes’ time. Throw things into the trash, donate other items, pay attention to unnecessary duplicates within a given category, and keep working; it might actually feel good! Then organize what’s left and set up a time to keep weeding on a regular basis.

Working on FLOW may inspire you, but don’t “move too fast.” You want to make good decisions, not hasty ones, which could backfire. Remember that storage containers are not your friends but someone with fresh eyes is, so invite a trusted pal over to help you see things anew.

and at a rapid pace from preventable, chronic diseases – namely heart disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity, at alarming rates. This week, again we light a candle – focusing on solutions to this problem by highlighting a critical component of the healthcare maze: Community Health Workers.

Who are Community Health Workers or CHW’s?

They are trusted members of the community who channel their compassion and desire to serve in order to advocate on behalf of their community to offer health information and resources, and to facilitate access to critical health care services. These services include helping to obtain insurance for the uninsured or underinsured, facilitating health screen-

ings, making sure clients have transportation to and from medical appointments, delivering health education presentations, making home visits to check on individuals with specific health conditions and much more.

CHW’s are typically employed by clinics, hospitals, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based groups to help strengthen the lines of communication and coordination between patients, doctors, nurses and the entire care team that can mean the difference between life and death. These organizations benefit by gaining access to information about health care needs in the community, which they can use to improve the design of their own health services.

Recently I met with a group of CHW’s at a healthcare institution last week where I discussed the role of physical activity as a prevention strategy for reducing chronic disease including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and mental illness and how to inspire their clients to incorporate simple, creative forms of physical activity into their daily lives. These “wellness warriors” as I call them were incredibly inspirational. Doing this will not only lead to better health and longevity, but possibly gaining the confidence needed to eventually become an advocate for their own health concerns that may influence decisions from a policy perspective that could ultimately affect the delivery of health care services to the community at large.
