RiteCheck’s Howard Stein (1920-2017)

H

oward I. Stein, founder of RiteCheck in 1949 and founder in 1957 of the Check Cashers Association of New York (FSCNY) died Tuesday, February 7, at his home in Scarsdale, NY. He was 96 years old.

Stein was a true exemplar of the “Greatest Generation.” At the conclusion of WWII, he served with General Douglas MacArthur in the occupation of Japan.

Upon his return in 1949, with the money he had saved as a serviceman, he purchased a half interest in a check cashing store on West 135th street in Harlem.

Over the next 67 years, Stein parleyed that modest investment into a 13-store chain - one of the most prestigious in the nation -- known nationally for its innovative and progressive approach to alternative financial services. The NY association he founded continues as a robust advocate for the industry he helped to create.

In addition to his career as a groundbreaking entrepreneur, Stein was a connoisseur and internationally respected collector of Italian Renaissance Ceramics known as Mailoica. He generously donated his collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2001. The Philadelphia Museum of Art said of Stein’s collection

that it was “the finest collection in private hands in the United States.”

Stein, a resident of Scarsdale since 1967, supported a number of philanthropies. He served on the Boards of the Bronx Community College Foundation, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and as a Friend of the Israeli Philharmonic. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, in the year 1920.

Stein is survived by his domestic partner Beverly Spitzer, his three children, Judith, Charles and Jonathan, and six grandchildren. He was much beloved by the 130 employees who still work in his thriving business.

If your income is 80% of the area median income you can receive a grant of $30K for down payment and or closing costs. Your income can be as high as 120% of the area medium income (AMI) and you can still receive a grant for $15K.

In addition to the income guidelines, the other requirements are that (1) you purchase in New York City; (2) complete the home buyer education workshop which is offered at HCCI; and (3) use any of the approved lenders for your mortgage. You also only need to live on the property as your primary residence for 3 years. Plus, you can combine this grant with other first time home buyer grant programs that you are eligible to use. The advantages of homeownership are: (1) creating an equity investment as you pay off the mortgage. The equity is the difference in the amount

owed and the current value on the property. (2) The mortgage interest and the property taxes are deductible expenses. These deductions will help reduce your living expenses because a portion of your monthly housing cost will be recovered through your tax returns. (3) You are creating intergenerational wealth for your family as the value of your home continues to increase. There are some disadvantages also: (1) higher initial costs; (2) decreased mobility and (3) responsible for home repairs.

Son and Grandson of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Visit Bio-Drama on the Legendary Harlem Congressman

O

n Thursday, February 9, Adam Clayton Powell IV and his son, Adam Clayton Powell V, attended the first preview of “ADAM,” a bio-drama by Peter DeAnda that dramatizes the political life and legacy of the legendary Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. The compelling and historically accurate play captures the former congressman’s rise and fall, largely in his own words. Timothy Simonson plays Powell. The production, directed by Ajene D. Washington, is being presented Off-Broadway by Woodie King Jr.’s New Federal Theatre in association with Castillo Theatre and is running at Castillo The-

atre, 543 West 42nd Street, through March 9.

The son and grandson of the late Congressman were wholeheartedly impressed by the veracity of Timothy Simonson’s portrayal of their forbearer and gratified and enthused by the truthfulness of the play. Adam IV remarked, “It’s all my father’s words--what I heard and what I read.”

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (1908-1972) succeeded his father as Pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church in 1938 and represented Harlem as its congressman from 1945 to 1971. During the Great Depression, he was a charismatic neighborhood organizer and civil rights leader, bringing political pressure on major businesses to accept Black employees. Through

boycotts, demonstrations and other civic actions, he achieved professional-level jobs for Black workers in the 1939 World’s Fair, the MTA, utilities, Harlem Hospital and drugstore chains operating in the district. He was elected to congress in 1944, running on a platform of civil rights, fair employment practices and a ban on poll taxes and lynching. Brazenly outspoken on these and other issues, he was often their sole voice. This made him crucial to the evolution of politics of his time, because if he had not spoken out, many issues would not have been raised. For example, in the 1940s he challenged Mississippi congressman Rankin on the House floor

for using the word “nigger.”

Powell is recognized today as the founder of Black Identity Politics.

Adam Clayton Powell IV is the son of the former Congressman and his third wife, Yvette Diago. He was elected to the New York City Council in 1991 in a special election and served for two terms. He also served as New York state Assemblyman, representing East Harlem, for three terms. He is presently a government affairs consultant. His son, Adam V, is an actor residing in Manhattan.

His older brother, Adam Clayton Powell III, is the son of the Congressman and his second wife, singer Hazel Scott. Adam III presently

lives in the Washington, DC area. He has had a long and varied career as a communications producer and university administrator.

5 Things to Know if Someone You Love is Addicted to Painkillers (Statepoint)

F

ifty-two people die every day from opioid overdoses nationwide, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 12 million U.S. residents used prescription painkillers non-medically in the past year.

Unfortunately, even a small dosage can depress respiratory function, and these drugs can be especially dangerous when combined with other common substances like alcohol and sleeping pills.

What’s more, prescription drug abuse can be addictive, and even lead to heroin use.

If you love someone who may be addicted to prescription painkillers, here are five things the National Safety Council says you should know.

1. Addiction is a chronic

disease that affects the brain.

Addiction, like heart disease or diabetes, leads to increasingly poor health, and can be fatal if it’s not effectively treated and managed. People who suffer from addiction still have self-worth and should be treated with dignity. Unfortunately, shame and discrimination prevent many individuals from seeking treatment. Recovery can be achieved in many different ways and all recovery efforts should be celebrated.

2. Medication Helps. Opioid and heroin addiction cause a chemical imbalance in the brain, which medication can help repair. There are three major medications typically used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes counseling and participation in social support programs: Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone.

done diminish the effects of withdrawal and cravings restoring brain chemistry. Naltrexone blocks the euphoric effects of opioids and heroin.

al treatments focus on quicker fixes like attempting it alone or by going cold turkey, which ultimately can be detrimental.

Indeed, rates of relapse and overdose are higher for people who have gone through 30-day treatment programs, and 56 percent of people who leave treatment centers relapse within the first week.

However, medications, can offer longer-term solutions, and are often less expensive

than in-patient treatment. If traditional substance abuse programs haven’t worked, consider medication.

4. Support is critical. A failed cycle of detox and inpatient therapy, then relapse, can leave a person feeling hopeless. This is why support is critical. Doctors and treatment counselors are important, but even more so is a well-informed support group of family and friends.

“Addiction is not a broken arm that can be fixed. It’s like being on a permanent diet with a piece of candy staring at you every day,” says Avi Israel, a survivor advocate who lost his son after battling a prescription drug addiction. He advises friends and family of patients to, “Know the signs of addiction. Don’t judge. Throw tough love out the window.

Love. But love with structure.”

5. Understanding addic-

tion is crucial. Both patients and their friends and family should understand that addiction is a disease, and know what is needed to manage it.

“My son had Crohn’s disease, and I knew everything about that. I wish I had known as much about addiction,” says Israel.

There are more options than traditional 30-day-treatment programs and 12-step programs. In addition to medication, there are support programs like SMART recovery, which provide attendees with tools based on the latest scientific research, as well as a worldwide community with self-empowering, science-based support groups.

A road of recovery is paved by many people – not just those in recovery. With the right support systems in place, a successful and sober life is possible.

Straightening Out 4 Myths About Adults And Braces

C

lowing through because of dubious information that they have come to regard as fact.

A few of the myths that cause many adults to hesitate include: • Braces are just for kids. That’s simply not true, and hasn’t been for awhile, Pitner says.

About 27 percent of people seeking orthodontic treatment in the United States and Canada are adults and the number has been growing, according to a study by the American Association of Orthodontists.

• A referral is needed.

While a dentist can refer a patient to an orthodontist, it isn’t a necessity, Pitner says. Often, dentists don’t bother to suggest an orthodontist to adults because they assume their patients don’t want or need braces. “We’ve also been conditioned by the medical system to assume we need a referral to see a specialist,” she says. “That’s not so for orthodontics. You can make the decision yourself and it won’t affect your coverage if you have insurance.”

• Braces need to be worn for years. Many patients tend to overestimate how long they will wear braces. “It varies based on how complicated a particular situation is, but usually people will wear braces between six months and two years,” Pitner says. “Treatment did take longer in the past than it does today, but technology has helped accelerate the process.”

• Braces are ugly and everyone will stare.

This is another example of how things have changed. Braces are much smaller than they once were and ceramic, tooth-colored braces are available. Another option is clear, removable aligners such as Invisalign. Invisible braces attached to the back of the teeth also are available.

“Anyone who’s unhappy with they way their teeth look shouldn’t let misinformation get in their way of improving their smile,” Pitner says.

“The process is much faster, easier and more comfortable than the myths would have you believe.”

ountry music fans noticed something different about Faith Hill’s smile a few years back when she showed up for the Country Music awards.

The popular singer wore braces, adding her name to the growing number of adults who decided to straighten their teeth through the traditional “mouth hardware” usually associated with children and teenagers.

There may be a good reason behind the trend.

“A smile plays a critical role in how we feel about ourselves and how others see us,” says Dr. Leslie Pitner, an orthodontist and author of Improve Your Smile, Transform Your Life: A Life-Changing Guide to Orthodontics for Adults (www.drpitner.com).

“When people have an extreme overbite, crooked teeth or some other problem with their teeth, they hide their smiles.

I’ve had patients who literally have forgotten how to smile after years of trying to conceal unattractive teeth.”

A New Snow Moon in Leo

I

received an email attachment from my friend Sista Shai, the wonderful communicator for the New York chapter of The African Holistic Health Organization. The attachment was a message from Barbara Dominick about a lunar eclipse that took place Friday February 10 and Saturday February 11. The message went on to say that the full moon in February is traditionally known as a snow moon because the month is often the

coldest time of the year and when snowfall tends to be the heaviest.

What intrigued me about Dominick’s message was the unique fact that this snow moon lunar eclipse took place in Leo. According to Dominick this celestial event will usher in a time for change and new beginnings; a shift of energy that will have a profound impact on people’s lives. You might have missed the opportunity to see this full moon eclipse but from an astrological perspective you will feel its effects for some time.

I recently interviewed numerologist Lloyd Strayhorn and astrologist Gale Armstead. Both acknowledged that 2017 is a number one

year; a time for new beginnings and a time of awakening. Barbara Dominick supported their predictions by saying “Eclipses are always times of powerful change and this one is highlighted by the fact that it occurs in Leo.” She goes on to say: “When the influential traits of Leo are combined with this new sense of purpose, expect a lot of people to finally take back control of their lives and futures. The noble and courageous leader that Leo embodies will be at the forefront of even the most timid person’s personality.”

After further research I discovered that another amazing phenomenon took

place last Friday February 10. Comet 45P, which has been visible after sunset for the past two months through binoculars and telescopes, made its closest approach to Earth, only 7.4 million miles away at the same time of the lunar eclipse. This will add to the current reports of a universal bombardment of consciousness awareness energy from energy fields throughout our galaxy “The Milky Way.” The snow moon eclipse in Leo will provide motivating energy for many to move toward actualizing a greater sense of creative expression, a time for change, and the planting of new seeds. Lloyd Strayhorn said that a number one year is the time to make

ell, I promised you “stuff” from time to time . . . and now, it is that time again!

You see, there are times when you think that you are doing all you can do to be your best and wouldn’t you know it . . . right on your heels there are those girlfriends who would try to tear you down because they feel threatened by your indomitable spirit. What to do? What to do? Become the Teflon President? Easier said

than done . . .

If you are at all human then you know it hurts, especially when they try to tear you down while disguising it as “constructive criticism” or a “friendly aside.” At first you listen intently and as the conversation progresses you begin to recognize the telltale signs of insidiousness creeping into the so-called “well-meant” intentions. Or, maybe you listen to the entire conversation, missing their intent completely and the maliciousness of the review hits you much later! Ouch!

So, how does one separate the wheat from the chaff when trying to decipher the message? Clearly the answer will not be found in a Cracker Jack decoder ring. No my dear, you have to develop a highly sophisticated radar system to track all in-coming

bull . . . oney (smiles)! Some women have the bad habit of trying to sabotage a friend’s success instead of supporting her efforts. And . . . Some women are so accustomed to sabotaging that they are unaware that they even engage in it! How on Earth did you get yourself into this mess, you ask? Part of the answer lies in misplaced trust and personal admiration; the other part is simple—you lack street sense and get blind-sided. But when you interact with friends and acquaintances remember that not everyone is your friend!

Someone reminded me that if you don’t expect anything from anyone then you won’t get hurt, but I’m not one to think that way because I look for the good in people. There is, however, some truth to knowing who and what you

are dealing with when choosing who to tell what. Below are some fictitious types that you might run into . . . .

Ms. Negativity: Will listen to your good news and then proceed to puncture your balloon by pointing out all that could go wrong.

Ms. Subterranean: Will listen to your good news, hug you, jump up and down with joy and even organize a celebration in your honor, then unbeknownst to you, points out all that could go wrong to your mutual friends.

Ms. Can’thandleit: Will listen to your good news, and then disappear for a long time afterward, even though she seemed to be so happy for you at the time.

Ms. Ditto: Will listen to your good news, and then try to copy your success for herself.

Ms. Righton: Will listen to your good news and then offer to do anything that she can to help and follows through with the promised support.

It would be easy to just limit your conversations and interactions only to tried and true friends and professional relationships, but real time in the real world gets in the way. It would be so boring to wait until the perfect moment, friend or acquaintance to come along when you have good news . . . If you choose to ignore your instincts, just remember that even a Teflon coated skillet gets scratched if you use the wrong utensil.

AN DO TIP Week #47 Light a Candle America, one of the wealthiest, most resourceful nations in the entire world must take the lead in finding health solutions that will make a real and lasting impact in the lives of the people, especially those with limited resources grappling with numerous barriers to health. This week we take a look at the upsurge in partnerships between faith-based and healthcare organizations.

Healthcare and Faith-

Based Community Partnerships Particularly in the last 15 years or so, health, education, government and faith-based organizations (FBOs) have been increasingly collaborating to develop key initiatives to address the disparities in healthcare delivery and access to care.

Promoting health equity within a faith-based framework is not exactly revolutionary, it is quite familiar. We know that during the Civil Rights movement in the late 50s and 60s, FBOs were the hub for action on issues addressing racial and civil rights injustices. Today FBOs are now finding themselves addressing many of the same injus-

tices compounded by inequities in healthcare, the proportions of which seem unprecedented.

Both healthcare agencies and FBOs share a common thread: they are the gateway of care to those living in poverty and in social exclusion.

Here are two examples of wellness initiatives that highlight these partnerships and that set the stage for future collaborations.

commissioner in January 2014 takes a number of approaches to help eliminate the social barriers to good health – including working with community and faith-based institutions to address the racial, social, environmental and economic factors that create health inequities.

Says Dr. Bassett, “Faith leaders are trusted messengers who can deliver critical health information to their congregations to effect change for stronger, healthier neighborhoods.”

In the past year alone, CHE has partnered with hundreds of faith leaders throughout NYC. This past year, two events, the Food, Fitness & Faith Summit, one in Brooklyn and the other in the Bronx combined to bring out 350 faith leaders from nearly 150 FBOs to outline key health goals, congregation-led health initiatives and ways that the Health Department might expand opportunities for congregants to access opportunities for more physical activity,

with Mental Health First Aid Training program, that last year conducted training for more than 230 people of different faith denominations as part of the $850 million THRIVE NYC campaign spearheaded by First Lady Chirlane McCray, to prevent and treat mental illness and substance misuse. Faith leaders and others are trained to recognize when someone is in need of mental health services and how to best guide them to those services.

Sometimes you have to know when to light a candle, and when to fight a battle. In the coming weeks I’ll highlight more examples of wellness initiatives that are changing the face of healthcare in America.
