Ronald McDonald House recently donated money to the Wendy Hilliard Foundation to support the gymnastic program currently being held at the Armory on 143rd Street.

I visited the location last week and was amazed to see so many kids in our community happily participating in gymnastics. If you think our kids are not getting enough physical activity, you need to visit the Armory. Also if your children or grandchildren are not active, consider enrolling them in the program. hether you’re at work or on the town, you want your clothes to look their best.

However, limited time and money can pose challenges to building and maintaining a great wardrobe.

Dan Lawson, costume designer for “The Good Wife” on CBS, offers the following tips to look put-together wherever you go, no matter what your budget is.

The president and board leadership were elected at the organization’s board of directors meeting at the United Nations in New York City. As one of the founding organizations of the International Council of Women, the organization holds special Consultative Status with the United Nations in New York City. The organization’s Board of Directors unanimously

elected Mrs. Browne to serve an initial twoyear term as president of the organization.

Saideh Brown became the 40th President of the National Council of Women of the United States and the 4th African-American woman to hold the position. Founded in 1888 to help women secure the right to vote, Mrs. Brown has been charged with the responsibility to build a coalition that will work diligently to address the complex issues women face across America and around the world.

This is an encouraging sign because it indicates they are seriously considering the possibility of owning a home. They have started to realize there are greater advantages in owning a home rather than renting.

Some of the advantages of homeownership are: (1) you can create equity in your property as you pay down the outstanding principal balance of your loan.

This equity can increase your net worth because now you have a fixed asset. The equity also can help create inter-generational wealth for your family as the building appreciates in value.

(2) The real estate interest and real estate taxes are deductible items on your tax returns.

These deductions will help you keep more of your money at the end of the year. In addition since the money will ultimately return to you either through equity or a tax deduction, your monthly living expenses will be significantly lower.

Ronald McDonald House Donates $7,500 to Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation - Harlem’s Award Winning Gymnastics Nonprofit By Jennifer Cunningham

A

Harlem sports nonprofit that trains underrepresented children in the field of gymnastics just got a shot in the arm to support its efforts.

On July 27, the Ronald McDonald House charity made a $7,500 donation to the Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation, a program that teaches not only the rigors of the Olympic sport, but character development and healthy lifestyles.

Chris Perry, of Ronald McDonald House and Linda Dunham, of RHMC Global, and who is a McDonald’s franchise owner/ operator, later presented a ceremonial check to the Hilliard and the children.

Dunham said she decid-

ed to get involved because she wanted students from the area to have the same access that propelled former Olympian Hilliard into the highest echelons of the sport.

“Seeing you guys today is proof we made the right decision,” Dunham said.

“Continue to take advantage of this great resource, and we’ll continue to help you out.”

The money will support the nonprofit’s programs and services, which not only teaches gymnastics, but offers French lessons, music and anti-bullying workshops. The Ronald McDonald House has donated about $75,000 to the gymnastics nonprofit since 2010, Dunham said.

Although gymnastics summer camps can cost about $650 a week in New York City, Wendy Hilliard’s lessons are free or low cost, and no child is turned away based on their family’s inability to pay, she said. The gymnastics classes are led by accomplished instructors.

“The fact is that we’re able to have quality gymnastics - they may be low cost, they may be free - but it’s high quality,” program founder Wendy Hilliard

said.

Hilliard, who’ll celebrate the program’s 20-year anniversary later this year, is an accomplished gymnast in her own right. She was the first African American to represent the United States in gymnastics, and in 2008, was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She said she decided to start the program after launching her own athletic career after training through a community-based program in her native Detroit,

MI. “I really did this because I wouldn’t have done it (been successful in gymnastics) if I hadn’t had this opportunity,” Hilliard told the Harlem News. “And we know that the kids love it.”

She launched the program in a church on the Upper West Side, and later moved to the Harlem Armory in Central Harlem, where the program is located today.

clad in purple leotards and t-shirts, later performed a dress rehearsal of a gymnastics dance routine that they’ll perform for parents at the end of the summer.

In addition to ensuring that your child’s immunizations are all up to date, it is important to add one more health item to your to-do list: scheduling an eye examination for your child before school starts.

Childhood development experts agree that upwards of 80 percent of early learning is visual. Children need to see properly to learn effectively, which is why eye screenings are so essential to your child’s success in school. Problems such as near- and farsightedness, eye focus, and eye coordination can impair learning and lead to poor academic performance.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, vision problems affect 1 in 4 school-aged children nationwide. Many conditions such

as a lazy eye or crossed eyes can be treated successfully if detected and treated early.

However, if they go untreated, these conditions can lead to more serious vision problems down the road.

Worried About Alzheimer’s? These Tips Can Help Keep Your Brain Healthy

lzheimer’s disease is one of the most frightening, yet least understood ailments we face as human beings.

The loss of memory – forgetting family, friends and the most important events of our lives – is painful, tragic and heartbreaking for anyone who is close to the person suffering from the disease.

But Alzheimer’s doesn’t just arrive one day, full blown.

It begins its insidious work long before the patient has a hint of what’s happening.

“Research suggests Alzheimer’s disease starts in your brain decades before you experience any symptoms,” says

Daniel Amen, M.D., a clinical neuroscientist and brain imaging expert who also is the founder of Amen Clinics (www.amenclinics.com), which treat patients at six locations around the country.

He says the good news is you can find out what’s happening in your brain and, while there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s, there are things you can do to better care for your brain.

Amen, author of the New York Times bestseller “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” uses SPECT scans to examine his patients’ brains.

SPECT stands for single-photon emission computed to-

mography. Amen says the brain-imaging device can show the abnormal patterns of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia in their early stages and also can help distinguish multiple forms of dementia.

“That’s critical information,” Amen says, “because the varying types of dementia often have similar looking symptoms – at least in the early stages – but each type has its own ‘signature’ blood flow pattern in the brain that’s revealed with SPECT imaging.

“Identifying the type of dementia a person has is important because the treatment that works best for one type may not be effective for another

type.”

But Amen also says there are steps that anyone can take to keep their brains healthy long before Alzheimer’s becomes a concern. Those include: • Maintaining a proper diet. People who focus on healthy eating often are worried about their waistline, but the brain also benefits from or is harmed by what’s on the menu. Too many Americans sustain themselves on a diet filled with sugar and processed foods, which are associated with dementia and depression, Amen says. For a healthier mind, he says, there are “super foods” that nourish the

brain such as various fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts.

• Avoiding too much alcohol and tobacco. Heavy alcohol and tobacco use lowers blood flow to the brain and reduces the ability to think over time.

• Exercising the brain. Activities such as dancing, tennis or table tennis (which Amen calls the world’s best brain sport) boost your coordination.

Mindful exercises like yoga and Tai Chi reduce anxiety, depression and increase focus.

“In spite of the natural process of aging, you actually have a choice in how fast your brain ages,” Amen says.

“What you choose to do – in other words, your behavior and

habits – can speed up or slow down the rate at which your brain declines with age.”

s the great poet Langston Hughes once said, “As goes Harlem, so goes Black America.” With that in mind, it is important that we play close attention to the fact that the venerable Charles Rangel will, at the end of this year, be leaving office after 46 years of historic service to his Congressional district.

Rangel, amongst other things, is the creator of the Empowerment Zone legislation, was one of the strongest voices calling for the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa, and author of the U.S. Caribbean Basin Development Bill.

He has been a strong advocate for bridging the digital

divide between mainstream America and urban communities of color, and the lead voice advocating for the relaxing of restrictions in travel to and business development in Cuba.

Rangel was also one of the original founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus which has now grown to include 1 U.S. Senator, 43 Congress members and 2 non-voting Congressional delegates.

Following Rangel’s announcement of his retirement at the end of 2016, there was a Congressional primary in the 13th Congressional district on June 28th of this year. Rangel’s announced, preferred and chosen successor, State Assemblyman

Keith L.T. Wright, was narrowly defeated in the primary election

by State Senator Adriano Espaillat. Therefore, it is inevitable that beginning in 2017, Harlem, for the first time in its history, will not have an African-American Congressman.

Harlem’s first Congressman, Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., was elected in 1945 and he served through 1971 when he was replaced by Mr. Rangel, who has served as Harlem’s second Congressman ever since.

Now the 13th Congressional district must come together to work with Espaillat - who is virtually assured to be elected to replace Rangel in the November elections - to make

he life and career of New York’s first African American mayor, David N. Dinkins, is one for the history books. And now the David N. Dinkins Papers and Oral History Project, housed at Columbia University Libraries, offers researchers a wealth of material to study the 106th mayor’s contributions to politics and society.

“I cannot think of another public figure more primed for reevaluation now than Dinkins on the 25th anniversary after his inauguration,” said Thai Jones, the Lehman curator for American history at Columbia’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

That’s why the DOE is, once again, offering completely free, nutritious breakfasts and lunches to anyone 18 years or younger in New York City all summer long.

With nearly 1,100 sites in all five boroughs, the summer meals program ensures that children will have easy access to meals over summer break, so they can start the school year ready to learn.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to participate in this important program and help us raise awareness. New York City’s summer meals

program is the largest in the country, and together, we can make sure that children don’t go hungry during the summer months.

e are now in the age of creative mind, a time when the masses will learn to embrace their abilities to use thought manifestation to improve the quality of life for themselves and for others. It is important to understand that the human ability to use the power of thought to influence reality in the material world has been a well-guarded secret for centuries during the age of competitive mind which started to decline in 2000.

Competitive mind energy takes the form of a reality that makes use of fear and doubt to control human

spiritual development. The appearance of limitations in the supply of resources has developed the desire to control material passions for thousands of years. In 1910 Wallace D. Wattles wrote about how to improve one’s ability to obtain wealth by using creative thought in “The Science of Getting Rich”.

Wattles wrote over 100 years ago that “riches secured on the competitive plane are never satisfactory and permanent; to become rich one must rise entirely out of the energy of competitive thought. You must never think for a moment that the supply Is limited. When you think that money is be-

ing cornered and controlled by bankers and others you drop into the competitive mind and your power to cause creation is gone”.

Only a few adapted to the universal law of creative thought to improve their quality of life in the old age of competitive mind thinking. We are now in the age of creative mind and more of the masses will become aware of their ability to use creative thought as a method to improve their lives and the lives of others.

Faith and compassion are the foundations of creative mind thinking, this may seem redundant to many who read my dialogs but it is very important that

I believe the time has come for the following quote by Wallace D. Wattles to be adopted by the masses to allow the the human race to reach the next level of spiritual growth and evolution; “Wattles states that “your vision and faith will set the creative force in motion to bring it toward you, and your action will cause the forces in your own environment to move you toward the place you want. In order to do this, you must pass from the competitive to the creative mind and

ell, I promised you “stuff” from time to time . . . and now, it is that time again! You see, there are times when you think that you are doing all you can do to be your best and wouldn’t you know it . . . right on your heels there are those girlfriends who would try to tear you down because they feel threatened by your indomitable spirit. What to do? What to do? Become the Teflon President? Easier

said than done . . .

If you are at all human then you know it hurts, especially when they try to tear you down while disguising it as “constructive criticism” or a “friendly aside.” At first you listen intently and as the conversation progresses you begin to recognize the tell-tale signs of insidiousness creeping into the so-called “wellmeant” intentions. Or, maybe you listen to the entire conversation, missing their intent completely and the maliciousness of the review hits you much later! Ouch!

So, how does one separate the wheat from the chaff when trying to decipher the message? Clearly the answer will not be found in a Cracker Jack decoder ring.

develop a highly sophisticated radar system to track all in-coming bull . . . oney (smiles)! Some women have the bad habit of trying to sabotage a friend’s success instead of supporting her efforts. And . . . Some women are so accustomed to sabotaging that they are unaware that they even engage in it! How on Earth did you get yourself into this mess, you ask? Part of the answer lies in misplaced trust and personal admiration; the other part is simple—you lack street sense and get blind-sided. But when you interact with friends and acquaintances remember that not everyone is your friend!

Someone reminded me that if you don’t expect anything from anyone then you won’t get hurt, but I’m not one

to think that way because I look for the good in people.

There is, however, some truth to knowing who and what you are dealing with when choosing who to tell what. Below are some fictitious types that you might run into . . . .

M s. Negativity: Will listen to your good news and then proceed to puncture your balloon by pointing out all that could go wrong.

Ms. Subterranean: Will listen to your good news, hug you, jump up and down with joy, and even organize a celebration in your honor, then unbeknownst to you, points out all that could go wrong to your mutual friends.

Ms. Can’thandleit: Will listen to your good news, and then disappear for a

long time afterward, even though she seemed to be so happy for you at the time.

Ms. Ditto: Will listen to your good news, and then try to copy your success for herself.

Ms. Righton: Will listen to your good news and then offer to do anything that she can to help and follow through with the promised support.

It would be easy to just limit your conversations and interactions only to tried and true friends and professional relationships, but real time in the real world gets in the way. It would be so boring to wait until the perfect moment, friend or acquaintance to come along when you have good news . . . If you choose to ignore your instincts, just remember that

even a Teflon-coated skillet gets scratched if you use the wrong utensil. Think about it. See you next week.

harges dropped.

You were surprised, but not surprised. Hopeful that it might be different, but only barely.

You know that these days, the idea of justice can be a slippery issue that’s sometimes based on all the wrong things, and in the new book “Nobody” by Marc Lamont Hill, you’ll see how we’ve come to this.

On the afternoon of May 1, 2015, when Baltimore’s chief prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, said she was bringing charges “on six… police officers involved in the arrest and detention of Freddie Gray,” her pronouncement

was met with “cheers.”

Gray’s case then was the latest in a long line, nationwide, but it wouldn’t be the last of its kind.

Gray, says Hill, was Nobody.

“To be Nobody is to be vulnerable,” he says in his preface.

It’s being “poor, black, Brown, immigrant, queer, or trans” and living in an atmosphere that’s “more rather than less unsafe.”

Nobody is “considered disposable.”

Take, for instance, Michael Brown.

By all indications, Brown was a normal guy who acted spontaneously: he stole cigarillos from a c-store and shoved

the shopkeeper, who called authorities and the rest is history.

The way it happened, though, the dehumanization, and the aftermath of Brown’s “random encounter” with police will be talked about for generations, says Hill.

How did we get here?

The answer is found in crowded, ill-maintained, depressing neighborhoods where schools are sub-par and few in charge care. It’s in the way the justice system operates for those who are too poor to hire a lawyer or afford their bail. Also to blame: so-called “quotas” within police departments, a lack of differentiation be-

tween serious infraction and minor annoyance, and the relative ease of targeting minorities in all of the above.

And yet, says Hill, we cannot “individualize this crisis.” We must fix housing, schools, the justice system, and the economy overall, in all corners of the country.

“We must reinvest in communities. We must imagine the world that is not yet.”

You brace yourself, take a deep breath, unfold the newspaper at the corner and quickly peek at the headline to see if it’s about yet another shooting of a young person.

So begins your day. Shoulda read “Nobody” first.

Before you do, though, let’s get the elephant out of the room: author Marc Lamont Hill isn’t anti-cop

in this book. Instead, I saw a thoughtful, balanced, thought-provoking look at how today’s authorities, police departments, and government entities have evolved to be what they are, and how that can be turned around. In his examination of the past, in fact, Hill paints real solutions to the problems that put vulnerable citizens in harm’s way. I also saw that those solutions don’t lie one-hundred-percent with those in Blue.

This is not an easy book to read; it’s not fun, either, and it demands that you think about what’s said. Still,

if you only read one book with the intention of making change, then this is what you want. Start “Nobody” today, and there’ll be no dropping this one.
