Esplanade Gardens co-op complex has been part of the Harlem Community for more than 51 years. This past weekend they celebrated “Famiy Day” thanks to their sponsor and management company, Prestige Management. They were blessed with great weather as they had a fun-filled day with activities for all in the complex. (see pages 14-15) This past Saturday the annual Percy Sutton 5K run and Health Walk was held in Harlem, which is part of the HARLEM WEEK events. This year the “Children’s Run” was added. (see page 4).

September 13th is the primaries. Plan to vote.

Do not assume your one vote will not make a difference. It just takes a few thousand people to assume their vote does not make a difference and someone like Trump gets in office. You should have gotten the message by now. Remember to vote.

he National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) extends sincerest condolences to the family of Senator John McCain. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr, President and CEO of the NNPA emphasized, “John McCain’s integrity and courage were his greatest virtues. His national leadership example is still needed today not only in the U.S. Senate, but also in every state, city and town across America.”

Dorothy Leavell, Chairman of the NNPA and publisher of the Crusader Newspapers, stated, “The death of Senator John McCain reminds us that none of us are immortal, but his life was one of service and love for his country. Giving of one’s service until the end speaks volumes of his integrity and he fulfilled the call from our maker to be of service to others.”

Informant observed, “Senator John McCain will be remembered in the African American community of Arizona as a national statesman who grew and evolved particularly in his later years as an elected official who transcended partisan politics and who eventually did what he thought was the right thing to do rather than to be confined to political party loyalty. That is why he voted pivotally to save the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) at a

time when most Republicans were voting to end the ACA.” “His acts of service in war, where he was held captive, and then at home, was one of dignity, respect and care in the United States Senate far surpassing many others in similar circumstances,” concluded Leavell.

hat is happening to Harlem home values?

Prices continue to escalate beyond an affordable amount for most first-time low to moderate income buyers. Which is pricing them out of the market. There seems to be little recourse for Harlem residents except to continue paying a monthly rent that is also equally outrageous.

Although renting does provide a basic necessity, it does not provide any monetary investment or tax deduction benefit. Suppose you have been living in your apartment for a minimum of 10 years and paying approximately $1500 per month. You would have already spent over $180,000 in rent! Imagined what you could have owned by now.

But instead you have nothing to show for that time except having a roof over your head which is a good thing.

However, the main point to homeownership still centers around three primary factors.

(1) You must have a steady job and consistent income.

Lenders want to see at least 24 months employment history in the same career. If you have changed occupations, a new 24-month clock will begin.

You may have to wait some additional time before applying for a mortgage.

(2) You must have a solid credit history. Lenders again want to see 24 months clean credit history. This will mean no delinquent accounts for the past 2 years. They will want to see at least 3-4 active credit accounts and usually a min-

imum credit score of 650 or better depending on the mortgage product.

(3) You must have adequate assets for the down payment and closing costs. This can be a problem for most first-time buyers today because your monthly household expenses are prohibiting you from setting an aggressive savings goal. Here is where using a monthly household budget can assist you by helping you to identify and eliminate wasteful spending to achieve your goal of homeownership.

n Thursday August 16, 2018, hundreds of Harlem residents, including clergy, real estate professionals, elected officials and nonprofit leaders, joyfully lined up under the warm Manhattan sun, to board the Hornblower Infinity yacht for the 12th Jamboree: A Soulful Extravaganza on the Hudson. Hosted by

Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI). This dinner cruise featured R&B singer Keith Washington and Harlem’s own Omar ‘the Comedian’ Thompson.

There were so many activities spread across the grounds for people to see and do. Black Terror Sound provided the music and they were rocking the area with hip-hop and R & B music including Aretha Franklin in the middle of the grounds.

PONDER THIS! When You are Not in Charge

hings happen even when we thought we had a plan. Recently I visited a friend in a nursing home; a situation she never thought would be her destiny. I asked how she was feeling and she took the question to a psychological realm, rather than a health inquiry.

She said, “I feel useless.”

Those three words changed the ambiance of the visit.

She opened Pandora’s box, so to speak, and released the angst of what it feels like when you are not in charge. When you cannot say yea or nay, go or stay or choose neither, that is the moment of actual reality. When you have been reduced to a room number and a bed with an assigned letter of the alphabet to designate what side of the room is your homestead, that is when you know you are not the one in charge.

Think about the times you have expressed how wonderful it would be to have a housekeeper, a laundry doer or grocery shopper to take over those laborious duties that are necessary nuisances. Have you ever thought about how it would be if you had

no decision-making options?

When activities that have been a natural part of your lifestyle are under the supervision of people who have absolutely no clue to the who that is you, it is natural to experience a shutdown in spirit and enthusiasm.

Let’s be real, their job is to wash, dress, feed and get you settled in a chair in the dining hall or recreation area, where you wait for the same day in and day out regulated activities.

What can we do for someone forced to live in an unfamiliar place, be it willingly or not? Do not let them forget who they are and what they mean to you.

A framed picture of an event you attended together could be a source of precious memories. Some humor,

As friends and family members, we can be of

some assistance. We can be a helpmate and not always a complainer. When you visit, try to enter the doors of the nursing home with thanksgiving. Let your face be a beacon of hope.

Let gladness be where sadness may dwell. And, before you make your exit, show some love and appreciation to those who are attending to those in need of long-term care. It just isn’t easy on any level, no matter what side you find yourself.

I

n your lifetime, you’ve done many amazing things.

You learned to walk.

Imagine how hard that was, and you did it! You learned to make words and put them into sentences, which is no easy feat, either. You know how to get to school, do math, read, and play ball.

But, as in the new book “On Point” by Hena Khan, could something be holding you back from greatness?

For weeks and weeks before try-outs, Zayd Saleem practiced his shots, dribbles, and layups for a better chance at joining the best fourthgrade basketball team in

the whole entire league.

No kid was happier than Zayd when he finally made it – and the bonus was that his best friend, Adam, was on the team, too.

And that was great – it gave Zayd more time to hang out with Adam, and it allowed them more time to play ball.

But then the basketball team started doing poorly, losing games by a lot of points. Adam was the team captain, but he began hanging out with some other, older boys who preferred football.

Zayd was afraid that his best friend had lost interest in hoops, es-

pecially when Adam skipped basketball practice a couple of times, and that made Zayd sad.

He figured the team was as good as done, but then Coach dropped a bombshell: Adam was out for awhile and Zayd was on point!

But how could that be? Zayd wasn’t sure how to tell Coach that he wasn’t ready! He wasn’t aggressive enough, or fast enough to move the ball along in play. He wasn’t nearly as good as Adam but with Adam gone, what were the choices?

Practice, practice, practice. That was the only option, and as Zayd

thought about an upcoming game, he also thought about his beloved Jamal Mamoo’s predicament: Jamal Mamoo had recently gotten engaged but everybody had an opinion about the wedding. Zayd could tell that Jamal Mamoo and Nadia Aunty were not happy about their

ceremony becoming something they didn’t want. He practiced and thought, until the answer was finally clear. Was it possible that the solution for both of them was the same?

Here’s the first thought about “On Point”: though it’s based in basketball, your child doesn’t have to be a basketball fan to like it.

Indeed, author Hena Khan is careful to use correct terms in this hoops-book, but they (and other words) are quietly explained within the story itself, usually by its main character.

Readers unfamiliar with b-ball are even schooled on the title’s meaning, but not in a manner

by Hena Khan that’s off-putting to kids who already know.

That’s perhaps what’s going to put this book in a youngster’s hands.

What will keep it there is the story itself, which is one of tradition, confidence, and learning to lead, but it’s not a preachy message.

All around, that makes “On Point” a truly appealing book, both for kids and for parents who want subtle lessons learned. If that’s true for your 7-to-10-year-old, then this book should do it.

Closing the Digital Divide Part II C By: William A. Rogers

losing the Digital Divide is a three part article on the Digital Divide Partnership (www.ddpny.org), the only Harlem-based Black-owned technology company that has Federal, New York State and City licensing that gives them the authorization to provide the same services provided by major broadband service companies.

Rather than trying to compete with large companies like Spectrum, Cablevision and Verizon, Doug Frazier and Stu Reid, the two co-founders of DDP, decided to use their skills and abilities to

provide free phone service, Wi-Fi and internet applications to those who cannot afford to pay for this technology, a major step towards closing the digital divide in Harlem.

I started writing about the discrimination that would be experienced by those who were on the negative side of the digital divide in the late 90’s at that time not having access to information technology was just an inconvenience. Now in 2018 having access to information technology is a necessity no matter who or where you are.

While serving as Director of the Office of

Urban Affairs at The City College of New York, I worked with Angela Harden to develop the foundation for WHCR 90.3 FM to become Harlem’s radio station. With the assistance and partnership with DDP, WHCR is truly now “The Voice of Harlem” streaming live on www.whcr.org.

After Hurricane Sandy, DDP helped develop a WHCR Emergency Broadcast Team (WEBT) to ensure local community-based communications during disasters and emergencies (www.whcrebt.org).

Federal 8 resident leaders, NYCHA families on the Upper Westside now have access to free Wi-Fi and educational and informational programming provided by DDP’s Streaming University Project.

The Streaming University Project (www. youtube.com/streaminguniversity) has over 1,400 videos in their streaming library containing content conceived and produced by Harlem residents, designed to uplift and improve the quality of life.

“The Wisdom Table” is a great example of how this program works. It is a streaming show produced by seniors living in the Johnson Houses in East Harlem.

The program enables residents to explore their issues and concerns, plus they have the capability to tell their own story.

“The Wisdom Table” is streamed live and distributed over the community Streaming Network at www.ehcr. online. This Streaming Network is also programmed to deliver community-created and controlled content to mobile devices.

Part III of Closing the Digital Divide will focus on the employment and business opportunities that DDP programs like the Streaming University Project and Harlem Smart Net can bring to Harlem residents of all ages.

In 2011 Riverbank State Park became the first State Park in New York to provide free Wi-Fi services to its 2 million annual park visitors. DDP, in partnership with CCNY’s WHCR, sponsored and developed this program which became the first of what is now known as the Wireless Technical Campus (WTC).

Harlem’s Johnson Houses became the next WTC project.

A virtual tenant patrol service was developed by DDP in partnership with tenants that enables resident associations and residents themselves to remotely monitor their building entrances, lobbies and other public spaces from their apartments using their TV’s, or remotely with their mobile devices. This virtual tenant patrol program enabled the Johnson Houses Resident Association to assist the NYPD in finding a missing young child.

The Wireless Technical Campus project has also assisted NYCHA residents and associations in the South Bronx and Brooklyn.
