he celebration of my 25 years publishing continues in this issue. Again, thank you to those who participated in our August 20th issue last week. I have had to update the “Village” page since of course I missed a number of people who have been instrumental in my journey. I am sure there are a few more and I apologize in advance.

What I want my readers to know and what I want other new business owners to know is that it does take a village. You need acknowledgement about the things you are doing right and perhaps the things you might be doing wrong in order to be successful in business. I view success as being able to use my God-given talents

COMMENTARY: Beware of Those Seeking a Pat on the Back! Disaster Ahead!

y mother used to have a phrase when she was alive. Usually referring to me and my attitude when I thought I had done something particularly noteworthy. She used it when describing somebody who started acting like they were better than someone else or, basically felt their No. 2 didn’t stink. She would say that person was simply, “smelling him or herself.” I came to see it as fishing for a compliment.

The bible says unless your deeds are done to glorify God rather than yourself, you’re ‘smellin yoself.’ I’m here to tell you it’s at these times that one ought to be very careful because spiritually, you’re entering deep water. “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward in heaven.” Matthew 6:1.

It appears that intent and motivation are the true indicators of a person’s real

character and ultimately how he or she is viewed by God. Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons gets you nothing, zilch, nada. I mean, supposedly, if you are trying to impress friends and family, or trying to receive honors from your fellow man for doing good deeds, you’re smelling yourself and sorely in need of some Right Guard.

Doing what you know is right —forgiving your enemies, turning the other cheek, helping the less fortunate, speaking truth to power — these are the things that are supposed to be done so that others might see the deed(s) as glorifying the Almighty; not so that people will be impressed with you.

Even in prayer, the bible says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Your Father will reward you. Matthew 6:6.

Haven’t we all been unimpressed with someone who appears to sincerely help us

or help another person out of what appears to be the goodness of their heart, only to find them with their hands out to get theirs, or their backs turned so the world can pat them on it? God tells us in His own ways that if you do that, talk to the Hand because the ears ain’t listening. You don’t give to receive, and you don’t love to be loved. That’s blackmail. That’s extortion. It’s impure and spiritually unacceptable.

Give because you want to and love because it’s who you are. Anything else is a fraud and an affront to Jesus who gave His all and loved unconditionally, so that we all might live. “In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise the father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16.

Granted, walking around with that level of purity in

one’s heart might be a bit much for most of us, present company included. However, it’s pretty easy to know, acknowledge and understand that the real reason we reach out to someone else is to be seen as a good person by others.

We all want to be thought highly of by our peers, our parents and those closest to us.

But in reality, only God counts when it comes to appreciating who we really are. Anything else is show. The rest is ego.

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 186:18.

All of this points to being true to one’s self, then talking the talk and walking the walk.

The echo of mother wit resonates in my mind as I try to remember exactly what mom was trying to teach me about myself.

Before I get too full of me, the real test just might be a good whiff of the fragrance underneath my arm. Nobody can pour anything into a full vessel.

melia Ashley Ward, publisher of San Francisco’s Sun Reporter newspaper, could hardly contain her emotions when Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) was announced as the running mate for Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden. “I cried,” said Ward, who has remained close friends with Sen. Harris for more than two decades. “I know that she is qualified, and she is for the people,” Ward proclaimed. “I’ve always felt that God had a little something special for her.”

Marcela Howell, the president and CEO of In Our Own Voice: National

Reproductive Justice Agenda, called Sen. Harris highly qualified with a proven record of fighting for human and civil rights.

“As a Black woman born to immigrant parents, Sen. Harris understands, personally, how devastatingly unjust the Trump-Pence administration’s attacks on our most basic rights have been. She knows how it feels and what it means to be targeted because of race, gender, and national origin,” Howell stated.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson called Biden’s selection of Sen. Harris a “defining moment.”

“Sen. Kamala Harris, as the first vice-presidential

candidate of a major political party, breaks down one of these barriers in historic proportions,” Johnson declared.

“This announcement is even more powerful as it comes at a time when Black Americans face dueling threats – a global health crisis and ingrained racism.

This moment is long overdue.”

Back in the Bay area, Ashley Ward said most people are thrilled and proud that their native daughter can lead America’s future.

“I believe many of us will work overtime to help elect President Biden and Vice President Harris,” Ashley Ward said. “I believe once elected November 3, Vice President Harris

will work alongside President Biden to immediately put this country back on track. She is no stranger to controversy, and she certainly is not afraid of working to make the country better.”

In recent weeks, supporters of the president and many in the GOP have ramped up attacks against Sen. Harris and the other Black women considered

by Biden.

In an open letter by nearly 700 Black women leaders, the attacks were roundly denounced.

“Black women are many things. We are business executives, political strategists, and elected officials, philanthropists, and activists,” the letter, circulated

throughout the media and posted to various social media accounts, read.

“We are health and wellness practitioners. We are entertainers and faith leaders. We are wives, mothers, daughters, educators, and students. We set and shift culture. We build power, and we are powerful.”

Counting among the many Black women who signed the open letter are Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, Maya Cummings, Dr. Hazel Dukes, Suzanne DePasse, Valeisha Butterfield Jones, Cora Masters Barry, Melanie Campbell, and Karen Boykin-Towns.

“We are the highest propensity voters in this nation.

We are a coalition of Black women leaders, who, in

this inflection point of the Black liberation movement, where people around the world are galvanized to action, know that the time for Black women in the United States is now,” the women penned in the letter.

Ashley Ward said she believes Sen. Harris is up to facing down those who might spew racist or sexist hate toward her.

“Sen. Harris is no stranger to rude and negative folks,” Ashley Ward said.

“She has dealt with racism and sexism since the beginning of her 18-year political career. She is driven, fearless, tried, tested, and qualified. She will give Trump and Pence all that they can handle.”

Spreading ‘Love on the Block’ and Healing from Domestic Violence in Harlem Marisol Rodríguez

n response to an increase of “huger violence, domestic violence and gun violence” in her Harlem community, Stephanie McGraw organized ‘Love on the block’¾ a community event that brings local outreach programs, Black therapists, Black doctors, Black clergy and other healing resources together in one location. The first event was held at 116th Street btw.

Morningside and Manhattan Avenues on August 15th.

“We’re from here, we’re Black women and we are coming back and taking over our blocks with love,” said McGraw, Founder/ CEO of We All Really Matter (W.A.R.M.), a domestic violence organization based in Harlem providing services for women and families over the past 10 years.

There are two more ‘Love on the Block’ events planned for September 12th, 12-5pm on W. 131st btw.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. & Frederick Douglass Blvd., and on October 10th, 12-5pm on W. 155th at the Polo Ground Houses.

“We know that love cures everything, and if you matter, you will not be harming yourself or anyone else,” McGraw reflected, “And if you matter, police officer, you would not be harming another human being.”

Right after the pandemic hit New York City the hardest, McGraw partnered with WeWork in Harlem to create a respite or refuge for women facing abuse at home. It is open Monday through Saturday, from

9am-6pm at WeWork at 8 W. 126th Street. Since they opened in April, W.A.R.M. has worked with at least 38 clients, rescuing six women by providing them with emergency shelter and some with Order of Protections Additionally, W.A.R.M. has served 13,873 meals and has been distributing 1,800 meals weekly to women and families in Harlem through their partnership with World

Black community. Since she started W.A.R.M. she has not seen a significant increase in counseling services in Harlem and has her own future aspirations of opening a mental health clinic in the community.

One clinic she sees doing positive work in Harlem in the Nia Center, 2228 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd., founded by Dr. Cynthia Grace, a renowned psychol-

The work that McGraw does with her staff is rooted in her own experiences as a survivor of domestic violence: “My pain is being turned into purpose. All my experiences are being used to create healing for others.”

For those who are beginning their healing journey, McGraw says the first step is admitting you are in pain. “Make an admission that you are hurting because if that doesn’t come out of your mouth nothing is going to shift. ‘I’m hurting, I’m sad, I need some help.’ It’s okay to say that,” she emphasized.

Part of the work McGraw does is to dispel the myth that suffering through trauma on daily basis is the norm. She also is on a mission to destigmatize counseling and therapy in the

ogist at Harlem Hospital for many years.

“We want to disrupt the sense that it’s okay to be in pain, it’s okay to be in trauma, it’s a vicious cycle of being alright with the conditions as they are and stems from not seeing anything different,” said McGraw.

“For me, for a long time, I felt ashamed, so I wasn’t telling anyone, I wasn’t talking about it. I say to women, tell you story, it’s empowering to tell your story.”

Building self-love and self-compassion is another key aspect of McGraw’s own healing she teaches the women she works with.

“We all matter, but if you don’t matter to yourself you will allow someone to abuse you. No one told me I was loved, no one told me I was valuable, no one told

me I was worthy, I didn’t feel good about myself, so I attracted people who didn’t feel good about themselves either,” she said.

After being in quarantine awhile, McGraw was inspired to create a virtual healing space for other women, especially those living in abusive environments. The “Moring Glory Mirror Affirmations” Zoom meeting is 9-10am daily. “We speak life into the universe and into these women’s spirits, and the importance of honoring self,” When they are not at the meeting, McGraw encourages them stand in front of the mirror and speak positive messages to themselves. Messages like “You are amazing; You are beautiful; You are fabulous; You are a child of God; You deserve love; You are pow-

erful.”

On the last Monday of every month W.A.R.M. hosts another Zoom meeting on relevant topics including: Recognizing the signs of abuse, Creating Coping skills in the midst of a storm, and Surviving our emotions through Covid.

For McGraw, the pandemic has taught her to focus on “innerstanding” over understanding the world outside: “I have an ‘innerstanding’ no matter what happens around me, the faith in God that I have will protect me.”

This experience has also

been a reminder to McGraw of the importance of relying on one’s inner guidance or intuition: “Everything you need is within you, go within, get a deeper understanding of who you are, learn how to love yourself, learn how to be alright in your skin, learn how to be with, and without.”

Managing COPD During the COVID-19 Pandemic (Statepoint)

anaging chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is always important, and especially so right now, as individuals living with a chronic lung disease are at a higher risk of severe illness and complications from COVID-19.

However, misinformation about COVID-19 has made it hard for people with chronic conditions to determine how to stay safe.

Dr. Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association, is providing answers to common questions that the millions of Americans affected by COPD may have.

Q: What additional steps should I take to prevent becoming ill with COVID-19?

Because COVID-19 is a new disease in humans, our immune systems haven’t yet developed

defenses against it and there’s currently no vaccine. The best way to avoid illness, regardless of age or health status, is avoiding exposure to the virus.

For individuals living with COPD, stringent adherence to safety precautions is vital.

Stay home as much as possible.

When in public, maintain social distance of at least six feet, wear a cloth face covering and encourage others to do the same.

Also, wash your hands often and clean, then disinfect, frequently touched surfaces.

Q: How can I maintain control of my COPD during the COVID-19 pandemic?

COPD control is especially vital right now in case of exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19. Continue controller medications for COPD to maintain lung health. To limit potential exposure to COVID-19, find out if mail-order pharmacy

options are available to you, and if your insurance allows, secure a 90-day supply of prescription medications. Don’t delay important visits or ignore flare-ups or new symptoms. COPD complications can become serious if left untreated. If telemedicine isn’t an option, bear in mind that doctor’s offices have adopted new safety practices during in-person visits.

Q: Should I continue to use my nebulizer at home?

Taking medication correctly is a major component in successfully controlling chronic lung diseases. In certain areas, there have been reported shortages of metered dose inhalers (MDIs) due to increased demand in healthcare settings.

Your healthcare provider will work with you on when you can discontinue home isolation and resume normal nebulizer use. Contact them at

the first sign of new, severe or concerning respiratory symptoms for a home treatment plan. While most people recover from COVID-19 at home, having COPD elevates risk for severe symptoms. Seek emergency care for the following symptoms: trouble breathing, pain or pressure in your chest, development of a bluish tinge to your lips or face, and new confusion or inability to wake or stay awake.

No Bridge too Far — Remembering Congressman John Lewis and the Fight Still Ahead

his month marks the 55th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), one of the most powerful pieces of civil rights legislation in our history. The passage of the VRA into law was the result of decades of struggle and sacrifice and was truly a shining moment in our history.

Unfortunately, the struggle to ensure that all Americans have the right and opportunity to vote not only continues today, we have actually suffered significant losses on this front over the past decade. Some of the most critical protections of the VRA, designed to remove legal barriers at state and local levels that prevented African Americans from voting, were essentially gutted by a devastating 2013 Supreme Court decision. With one stroke of the pen, the Court set us back decades and created an environment where we’ve seen numerous court challenges to voting rights and other legal measures designed to further weaken the protections of the VRA. All resulting in suppression of African American and minorities participating in the process.

Add to this this the fact that many states are imposing strict voter ID laws, cutting voting times, restricting registration, and purging voter rolls. These efforts have kept significant numbers of eligible voters from

the polls in recent elections, hitting all Americans, but placing special burdens on racial minorities, poor people and young and old voters.

Adding to these now restored obstacles are new impediments — polling places consolidated in urban areas to make lines longer (and scarier given the poorly contained reach of the deadly coronavirus) and attempts to throw shade on mail-in ballots. Despite the fact that the evidence shows us that absentee voting is safe and secure.

Time for Good Trouble It comes to this: Americans are being cut out of the process by other Americans.

A great victory, fought for on bloody streets and across bloody bridges, a score settled and signed into law all those years ago has been compromised in the courts.

Time to despair? Nope. It sounds to me like it’s time again for some good trouble.

Good trouble was what American hero and Congressman John Lewis called the struggle for this all-important right of every American. Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia, served in the House of Representatives from 1987 until his death last month, spent decades working as an organizer and activist, was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and original freedom rider. He helped organize

the March on Washington in lockstep with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and A. Phillip Randolph. He walked into a beating from Alabama state troopers who cracked his head bloody and gassed him along with hundreds of marchers in the cause of voting rights on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in 1965.

He witnessed and rejoiced in the passage of the VRA alongside his fellow freedom marchers and years later, would have to see the Supreme Court decimate the act. Lewis knew that the court’s decision would reopen the door to voter suppression, but he refused to give in to defeat.

Here is what he had to say about our struggle: “Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

Now, It’s Up to Us

So, I say we cannot afford to let go of making good trouble. When U.S. Senator Doug Jones of Alabama said at Lewis’ memorial service, “It is the young among us in Alabama and across this nation who can heal what we have failed to heal in our lifetimes, no matter how hard John tried,” Senator Jones made note that Lewis had been heartened by today’s young activists.

“He confidently looked around and said, ‘All is well,’” said Jones. “‘It is time for the torch to be passed. It is time for me to let go.’”

That torch, brothers and sisters, is for us.

And I would say we have taken hold of it. Today you are seeing it in our protests against police brutality and racism. People standing up for their inherent civil rights.

For the right to live, to move about, to vote. You see the numbers and the strength and the outrage.

Today you are seeing it in the House of Representatives, which most recently passed the John Lewis Vot-

ing Rights Advancement Act, a bill intended to restore the vote to Americans — mostly Black, Latino, and Native Americans — who were disenfranchised by the 2013 decision.

The Voting Rights Advancement Act restores the full protections of the original, bipartisan Voting Rights Act of 1965. It also creates a new coverage formula that applies to all states and addresses measures that have historically been used to discriminate against voters.

A time for action, not despair Predictably, full passage has been stalled in the Senate, but “our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year,” right? We are fighting the long fight and making good trouble. And we need to see the numbers and the strength and the outrage at the polls.

In a few months, we will be voting in one of the most important elections of our time. You need to make your voice count. Make it count in spite of those who would

stop you. Voting is necessary to make the real change we need in this country. We must unite and come together to elect leaders who are committed to reform and to working people. The only way to do that is to vote.

More than 30 states have approved ballot initiatives to allow absentee voting without an excuse. Check out your situation in your state and however you choose to vote, please make your voice heard this November.

Those who read my column know that I am a union man. I can say unequivocally as far as the UAW is concerned, we are not new to John Lewis’ fight. For decades, the UAW has fought alongside freedom marching men and women to ensure that individual rights are honored.

At a time when far too many eligible voters are wrongly turned away from the polls – or simply don’t have access to them – we must rededicate ourselves to increasing participation among eligible voters.

John Lewis said at the 1963 March on Washington in front of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and UAW President Walter Reuther, “I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete.”

In that idea, Congressman Lewis is still right here standing before more bridges that need crossing. Only by voting, can we get to the other side.

New Tools Offer a More Complete Education About Native Americans (Statepoint)

T

o start the new school year, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is offering new K–12 distance learning resources and live programs for teachers and students who are interested in a more inclusive, accurate and complete education about Native Americans.

Here is a look at the latest offerings: The museum’s national education initiative, Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°), offers digital lessons for K–12 students, teacher guides and videos.

Several lessons are also available in Spanish. The newest module, “Early Encounters in Native New

York: Did Native People Really Sell Manhattan?,” designed for grades 4 and 5, provides Native perspectives, images, documents and other sources to help students and teachers understand how the 17th-century fur trade brought together two cultures, one Native and the other Dutch, with different values and ideas about ex-

change.

The museum’s educators will lead a series of virtual fields trips focusing on a variety of different topics for students in grades 4 through 12, including Indian removal, Indigenous innovations and treaties between the U.S. and the Native Nations of the Northern Plains. These free, live,

interactive programs are conducted via Microsoft Teams and can be booked through Microsoft’s Skype in the Classroom website.

The field trips should be reserved at least two weeks in advance. A minimum of 10 students is required to register.

The new series of free webinars “Youth in Action: Conversations About Our Future” is targeted to middle and high school students. Students can hear from young Native activists and change makers from across the Western Hemisphere who are working toward equity and social justice for Indigenous peoples.

In the U.S., Native Americans experience higher suicide rates than any other racial or ethnic

group, and mental wellness is an integral part of combating this issue.

During the second Youth in Action webinar on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. (EDT), students can join a conversation about community healing and learn how Native youth at the forefront of the mental health movement are addressing mental wellness by creating their own community-based programs, resources and advocacy.

The museum is partnering with Teaching for Change to present a virtual teach-in about Indigenous peoples’ histories and contemporary experiences with food and water justice for teachers on Sept. 12.

nationally renowned environmental justice advocate Winona LaDuke (member of the Mississippi Band Anishinaabeg of the White Earth Reservation) will kick off a program of interactive workshops featuring classroom resources available on the museum’s Native Knowledge 360° website and provided by the Zinn Education Project’s Teach Climate Justice Campaign. The teach-in will be held virtually via Zoom, and the $15 registration fee will cover online classroom resources.

Through these new distance learning programs, teachers and students can learn about the rich, complex and dynamic histories and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

Fear and Doubt 2020

T

here is an ancient wisdom that tells us that learning takes place with repetition; it is for that reason I often write about the danger associated with Fear and Doubt. Fear and doubt have been major tools used by a few to manipulate and control the mental, spiritual, and creative development of the masses for centuries in every developed society in the world. The true concepts

of faith and compassion are not often practiced in modern-day society.

We were all born with the gift to change our reality using the manifestation of thought. There are many theories that try to explain why this gift was kept secret from the masses for so long.

Most agree that control was a major factor. Ancient Egyptian and Mayan calendars predicted that 2012 would be the visual beginning of the next cycle of human development: The beginning of the end of the illusory concepts of limitation. Fear and doubt will slowly be replaced with faith and compassion.

Compassion for others and faith in one’s ability to change reality using positive thought manifestation will become necessary survival

tools in this new age of universal energy. With all that is happening in our local, national and international communities, many of my left brain thinking readers will not embrace my belief that those who rule by fear and doubt will in time self-destruct in order to be replaced by a universal energy of faith and compassion. Health and wealth will be two major factors that influence this change entirely.

The concept of improving one’s health and wealth by having faith in the ability to manifest a positive reality with focused thought: a reality that also focuses on improving the quality of life for others (compassion), but will never be accepted by some. Nature has always been selective; those who

learn to adept will move on to the next level of human evaluation. Do not allow fear and doubt to keep you from becoming all that you can be.

The social programed matrix of fear and doubt has been injected into our psychic from early childhood.

There are many reasons why the major news networks center around news that create fear and doubt; control is one of them. Unless you can find ways to step outside of the matrix, you will in time self-destruct. Many have no idea that they are living in a matrix, a major reason why stress is the foundation of most illnesses.

Fear and doubt keeps us from learning how to step outside the matrix, to deprogram ourselves, and to dis-

cover who we really are. We have this gift of thought manifestation but use it, all too often, in unproductive ways.

What you think about often will come to you. If you always focus on perceived limitations and the lack of power to determine your future, that will be the reality that you manifest for yourself.

It is a human fallacy to fear the unknown and we are in a time of many unknowns.

Your thoughts about the unknown future should focus on what you want it to be rather than what you fear it will be: a fear based on social programming.

We are now in the age of Aquarius, a time of truth and compassion, a time where our abilities for creative thought manifestation are stronger than they have been for many centuries. This ability will work whether you believe it or not. Faith in your ability

to control your environment using mental thought should focus on positive outcomes for you and your loved ones.

Those who continue to allow fear to dominate their thoughts about the future will have a difficult time in this new age. If you doubt your ability to manifest positive outcomes in your life, you will always prevent yourself from overcoming the obstacles you face. All things happen for a reason. “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own” by Eddie S. Glaude Jr. Review by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

id you see that?

Sure you did.

You couldn’t miss it, actually, because you can spot hatred, discrimination, and bad trouble a mile away. You know when something’s wrong and you saw it; saw it coming, in fact, and you weren’t alone.

In “Begin Again” by Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., you’ll know that a warning was sounded decades ago.

Every day, it seems like you catch the news and you cringe.

“It is exhausting,” says Glaude, “to find oneself... navigating a world rife with deadly assumptions about you and those who look like you... for no other reason” than the color of

your skin or your sexuality.

Author James Baldwin keenly felt both and in the midst of his career, he demanded, through his writing, that America come to terms with “this so-called democracy.” Baldwin was tired of a “set of practices” Glaude calls “the lie,” or “more properly several sets of lies” meant to keep racism alive in as many American systems as possible.

Baldwin saw “the lie” and it enraged him: once, early in the Civil Rights Movement, he made a group of Black college students promise that they would never take to heart “the lies” they heard about themselves. It’s been said that he saw “the lie” and

wanted to give “warning” to White readers of the battle to come, but in truth, Glaude says, Baldwin wasn’t sure “whether white America was worthy of warning at all.”

These are the things Baldwin spoke out against, says Glaude, and that we still grapple with – especially in the political climate in which we live. He believes “the divisions in the country feel old and worn,” although we do have the tools to alter current racial and political climates. Baldwin, for instance “insisted that we reach for a better self...”

“With that in mind,” says Glaude, “we have to gather ourselves to fight

and to begin again.”

In his introduction, author Eddie S. Glaude, Jr. says that he was in Heidelberg when he started this book, which gave him a unique perspective of the “current state of our politics.” He says that he didn’t write it as biography or literary criticism or history, although it ended up being “some combination of all three.” This, plus a good measure of personal memoir thrown in, adds a different twist and makes “Begin Again” quite deep.

But not too deep: there’s enough room here for readers to be moved by the parallels that Glaude draws between then and now, and how Baldwin perceived American society before

his death. Glaude also presents Baldwin’s constant fury and sadness over “the after times” (post-Civil Rights Movement) with an urgency that can still galvanize, though Baldwin has been gone for more than three decades.

So what would Baldwin have thought about our current administration?

Glaude doesn’t hypothesize here, so we’re left mostly to draw our own conclusions, to imagine, think, and to use Baldwin’s words as a sort of guide out.

And for that, “Begin Again” is a book you’ll want to see.
