Working Towards College Access for All

ike many New Yorkers, I was the first in my family to go to college.

It didn’t even occur to me until midway through high school, when one of my teachers told me I’d need to go to college if I wanted to follow my own dream of becoming a teacher. She made college a reality for me. I know first-hand how important it is to have teachers who make college a reality for

their students.

More than 50 years after my teachers put me on the path to college and a great career (in education), we’re making College Access for All a key part of our Equity and Excellence for All agenda for New York City schools. No matter their neighborhood or zip code, every student should have the opportu-

nity to go to college when they graduate high school.

The numbers are clear: we’re seeing results and we’re closer than ever to achieving this vision.

Our high school graduation rate is at a record high of 72.6 percent. A record high 55 percent of our students are enrolling in college or other postsecondary programs.

In the first year of College Access for All, New York City made the

CUNY application free for over 30,000 students; made the SAT exam available free during the school day for all high school juniors; and brought over 20,000 middle school students on trips to college campuses.

We also launched or expanded a number of citywide events including our first-ever College and Ca-

reer Month; citywide parent workshops on applying to college in a number of languages; and College Application Week, Financial Aid Awareness Month and College Decision Day. Last week, we released the annual New York City School Survey, and we heard about the changes that our students, families, and teachers are seeing. For example, 82 percent of our high school students said that school staff helped them consider which colleges to apply to, up from 75 percent the year before. 93 percent of parents said that their child’s school kept them on track to college and careers, up from 92 percent the year before.

This fall, we’ll expand College Access for All programs to reach over 600 middle and high schools. At the middle school level, this means more students visiting college campuses – over 40,000 next year – and more family events on what college means and how to get there. At our high schools, this means new funding, college coaches, and teacher training to boost graduation and college enrollment rates. Across the City, it

means increased opportunity for our students every day.

Yet none of these changes are possible without the strength of our educators, communities, and, most importantly, families.

As the school year approaches, I encourage families to start thinking about your child’s plans for college and careers after they graduate high school. Encourage your child to do the same – such conversations will give them goals to reach for, with your support. When school’s back in September, reach out to your parent coordinator and ask them about how college can be a reality for your child.

Our City is home to generations of future leaders – if we work together to support them, I know that they will realize their full potential.

ersonal credit plays an important role in the home buying process.

When applying for a pre-approval, most lenders want to see 24 months of clean credit history. This means no late payments for the last two years. They will also want to see three-four lines of active credit accounts - usually one or two major credit cards i.e.

Visa or Master Card, one or two department stores charge cards, auto loan, student loans etc.

Your credit score is based primarily on five factors, most of which you can directly control: (1) 35% of your score is based on your credit payment history. Your credit history will show who has extended credit to you in

the past. It will also demonstrate how well you have repaid your debts. (2) 30% of your score is based on the amount of outstanding credit debt. It is a good philosophy to keep your total credit balance around 30-40% of your overall credit limit.

(3) 15% of your score will be based on the length of time you had the account.

Older accounts have more value than newer account because they will have a longer history; (4) 10% of your score will be based on the type of credit accounts. It is important to note that installment loans such as a car payment will carry more weight than revolving loans like a store credit card.

(5) 10% of your score will be based on new credit accounts. Only open a new account when it is necessary because each new account will initially lower your credit score.

If you are considering purchasing with a co-buyer, the determining factor for approval of the mortgage loan application will be the lowest credit score of the two parties.

So whatever strategy you use in purchasing a home, credit will play an important role in the overall process.

TWU-Local 100 Supports HARLEM WEEK 2017

M

arvin Holland, Political & Legislative Director of TWU-Local 100, has been the ambassador for the union that moves New York. TWU is the largest transportation union in the country, representing over 42,000 members. This year, under the leadership of Marvin Holland, TWU has made a push to keep Harlem moving by sponsoring Harlem Week 2017.

A native New Yorker, Marvin was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1986. Shortly after, in 1991, he started his career with the New York City Transit Authority in the Stations Department as a Cleaner.

Climbing up the ladder from his humble beginnings as a station cleaner, Marvin currently acts as Political and Legislative Director for the union.

In this role, Marvin is responsible for advancing legislation that will improve the safety, security, and overall quality of life of the transit workers he represents. Marvin also directs Local 100’s community coalition-building campaigns, which this summer, has spon-

sored bus transportation for a Harlem community-based youth group’s trip to Washington DC to visit the African American Museum and tour Hampton University.

n August 21, 2017 Esplanade Garden Residents celebrated its 50th Anniversary as part of it’s annual “Family Day Celebration.” The day included fellowship, entertainment, food and activities for the children.

Maybe that’s why Building 4 came to be referred to as the celebrity building; Eddie O’Jay used to live here back in the day.

NBLCA Health Action J Taking Action against Hepatitis C

uly 25, 2017 marked the 5th Annual National African American Hepatitis C Action Day (NAAHCAD). This day of national awareness was co-founded by the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. (NBLCA), Coalition on Positive Health Empowerment (COPE) and Harm Reduction Coalition to publicize Hepatitis C prevention, testing, and treatment messages to public health partners and the black community.

The good news is that with the proper information, treatment and care, Hepatitis C is preventable, and curable. In bringing attention to the devastating effects of the virus and its cure, NBLCA sponsored a series of events for this year’s NAAHCAD, designed to increase education and awareness that included Hep C University Conferences, health fairs and free health screenings. Across the nation, millions were reached through radio programs, webinars, Facebook and

Every once in a while it gives you a wake-up call, and when it does the alarm seems to go off even louder than usual.

Maybe it has happened to you lately or maybe it has been a while, but regardless; whenever it happens life manages to get your attention immediately. How do you react? There are, of course, many ways to respond. Some of us ignore it and continue along our merry way.

There are those of us who hear it and pull the covers back over our head and sleep through it. Or maybe you’re the type to swat at it hoping to stop the ring.

How about those noble few who jump up immediately and rush to make changes? No matter where you fall in the mix, one thing is for sure . . . you have to make a decision to do one thing or another!

Doing nothing requires the tenacity to ignore the call completely, because if you heard it once, surely you will be destined to hear it again. Making a decision to respond later means that you have but a short while before you hear it again. If you respond immediately, before thinking about what life is trying to tell you then you risk making a mistake.

The truth is that whatever you decide to do there is risk involved.

You have no way of knowing until you do something. Confusing huh? Based on your own perspective there are reasons to hesitate

or not. So what to do?

We have a tendency to think that we have plenty of time to do what we want with our lives. As each day passes, there are things like work and family that tend to consume all of our time and it’s easy to put things off.

he wake for Rev. Dr. Fletcher Crawford, Pastor Emeritus of Union Grove Baptist Church, last Thursday, was so well attended that streets around the Hoe Avenue church were closed to vehicular traffic to accommodate the large number of people who came to pay their respects to this great man.

I’ve known Rev. Crawford for more than 20 years. He always had a kind word to say. He also was a self-styled comedian.

He would always leave me with a smile. He stood as a man among men and extolled the

virtues of the ministry and his love for his family.

To witness current Pastor, Frederick Crawford eulogize his father was an emotional moment for all in attendance. The First Corinthian Church was packed with celebrants.

The streets around the church were filled with people. A fitting tribute to a great man!

The home going celebration for Joan Pointer was held at St. Matthew’s Baptist Church in Harlem last Thursday night. Joan and I were children of St. Matthew’s. She was well loved and certainly will be missed.

She was an interesting, opinionated, cultured and well-traveled woman who found joy everywhere she visited.

She accomplished her life goal of travelling to the Holy Land.

Last Thursday on the 3G Experience on WHCR-90.3 FM, we brought the Rev. Lisa D. Jenkins, Pastor of St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, into the airwaves. She discussed her “Blood and Soil” sermon that she preached to her congregation last week.

The well-researched and spiritually driven message is still reverberating throughout the building and over the

Following Rev. Jenkins, Public Advocate Leticia James was our guest. She addressed the Charlottesville, Virginia tragedy and her “Worst Landlord List.” This time she identified the banks that continually give money to the derelict landlords.
