The biggest surprise was when Janet Jackson greeted the crowd. It was indeed a weekend filled with fun, entertainment, food and good weather (most of the time).

true great has passed. Aretha Franklin, “Queen of Soul,” had long been ill and on August 16, 2018, she succumbed to complications of advanced pancreatic cancer while in hospice care at her Detroit home, according to her family.

The beloved performer leaves an iconic legacy instrumental in changing popular music the world over.

Her early issues on Atlantic Records in the late 1960s and early 1970s, along with those of such fellow musical giants as Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and Sam and Dave, spurred the onset of popularized soul music.

Memphis-born Aretha Louise Franklin began her career at age 10 in the gospel choir of Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church where her father, C. L. Franklin, was a minister. Four years later, as manager, he took her on church tours and helped sign her to JVB/Battle Records for Aretha’s 1956 recording debut Songs of Faith, releasing the singles “Never Grow Old” and the standard “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” to gospel radio stations.

Young Aretha occasionally traveled with The Soul Stirrers featuring eventual soul star Sam Cooke. Moving to Columbia Records at 18 and switching to secular music, Franklin tried various styles, including jazz, blues and doo-wop, recording Aretha: with the Ray Bryant Combo, The Elec-

trifying Aretha Franklin and The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin.

At Atlantic Records, working with producer Jerry Wexler, she went to Alabama in 1967 and, backed by the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, settled on the sound that launched her stellar career. I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You garnered a two-sided hit, the title song backed with “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man.” Then came her signature song “Respect.” The writer, Otis Redding who also penned her hit “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” gladly announced between songs at the Monterey Pop Festival, “That girl just took this song from me!”

Other tunesmiths she covered over the years included Bobby Womack (“I’m In Love), Don Covay (“Chain of Fools”) and the team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin (“You Make Feel Like A Natural Woman). With more than 20 number-one hits, she became the most charted female artist in Billboard’s history.

A gifted songsmith in her own right, Aretha Franklin originals included “Day Dreaming,” “Think” and “Rock Steady.”

Her stellar career was cemented with Spirit in the Dark, Young, Gifted & Black and the gospel album, Amazing Grace, which topped two million in sales.

She hit a lull in the mid-70s releasing Hey Now Hey that show-

cased the production of Quincy Jones. Despite the success of the single, “Angel,” this and subsequent projects for the label didn’t do well, save the singles “Until You Come Back to Me” and “I’m in Love.”

She left the company in 1979 for a deal with Arista where she released 1981’s Love All the Hurt Away, which included her famed duet on the title track with George Benson, as well as a Grammy-winning cover of Sam & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Comin.’”

Commercial success returned with a veritable vengeance in the mid-80s as Jump to It and Who’s Zoomin’ Who? went platinum.

Spanning six decades, Aretha garnered 18 Grammy Awards, charted 112 singles and sold more than 75 million records.

She performed at the presidential inaugurations of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama and at the Royal Albert Hall before Queen Elizabeth. Aretha was the first woman inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and also inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame and the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Jennifer Hudson has been confirmed to portray Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biography with music mogul Clive Davis executive producing. Davis also has confirmed a November tribute at Madison Square Garden.

Though not a public activist,

on the arrest of Angela Davis, Aretha Franklin posted her bond, saying, “Angela Davis must go free.

Black people will be free. I’ve been locked up and I know you got to disturb the peace when you can’t get no peace. Jail is hell to be in.” She also sang at the memorial service for civil rights immortal, her friend Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Aretha Franklin dealt with health issues for years. In 2010, she canceled several concerts after undergoing surgery for a tumor.

Following a 2011 comeback at the Chicago Theatre, 2013 saw an increasing deterioration of health intermittently marked by canceled performances. Her final tour was the next June kicked off with a show at Radio City Music Hall.

Last year, health concerns scuttled a series of concerts before what would be her last live performances at the Wolf Trap in Virginia and NYC’s Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

As news of her passing spread, condolences and reflections of Aretha’s legendary career poured in from artists and fans all over the world.

Sam Moore of Sam and Dave released a statement that read in part: “Aretha Franklin and I have been friends and label mates for more than sixty years. I adored her… While I’m heartbroken that she’s gone, I know she’s in the

Lord’s arms and she’s not in pain or suffering anymore.”

Quincy Jones tweeted: “From the time that Dinah Washington first told me that Aretha was the “next one” when she was 12 years old until the present day, Aretha Franklin set the bar and she did it with the professionalism, class, grace, and humility that only a true Queen could.

Barbra Streisand shared her condolences with a photo of the two singers together and stated: “It’s difficult to conceive of a world without her. Not only was she a uniquely brilliant singer, but

her commitment to civil rights made an indelible impact on the world.”

Lauryn Hill offered: “Rest in peace to our Queen of Soul. Her contribution to music and to the empowerment and enrichment of our hearts, spirits, and souls is immeasurable. Thank you, Ms. Aretha Franklin, for sharing your anointed gifts with us. They changed the world. We are deeply grateful!”

Though gone, Aretha Franklin’s unparalleled voice and immeasurable influence will live on.

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn Says that Democrats that Want to Win in November Must Advertise in the Black Press

hile there’s at least a perceived growing number of Democrats who say they want to replace California Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn has emerged as a favorite among his peers to become the first African American to hold that position.

In an exclusive interview with the NNPA Newswire, the 25-year congressman said that, while he’s ready for the challenge, Democrats currently have much bigger fish to fry.

“The first order of business is to win the [midterm] elections on November 6,” Clyburn said. “That’s what I’ve been concentrating on.”

Clyburn and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Cedric Richmond each told the NNPA Newswire that they’ve identified 37 districts across the country they believe can be won by Democrats this year, which would wrest control of the House from Republicans.

“We feel, with the right kind of effort, we can win,” Clyburn said.

Clyburn listed three keys to success this November.

The first key, Clyburn said, is to prioritize the Black vote; Democrats can’t afford to take the African American vote for granted.

Second, the Democrats shouldn’t rely on an anti-President Donald Trump wave to get out the vote. Finally, Clyburn said that candidates must advertise in the Black Press, if they want to win in November.

“We are also talking about dis-

tricts where Barack Obama won twice and where Hillary Clinton also won, but these voters don’t turn out for the so-called ‘off-year elections,’” Clyburn said. “We can’t let these voters feel like we’re taking them for granted.”

Clyburn, 78, said he was recently taken aback by one candidate, who said that he could win the Black vote by running on an anti-Trump platform.

“Wait one second,” Clyburn said that he told the individual. “We can’t just go around being ‘Republican-light.’ We have to be out there putting forth an alternative message, for our base, and we have to reach out to Black voters and let them know we’re not taking them or any of our base for granted.”

To that end, Clyburn said advertising campaigns must largely include the Black Press.

“It’s very, very important…

Chairman Richmond and I have had candidates in and we’ve been telling them that one of the best ways to demonstrate that you’re not taking the Black vote for granted is to advertise in the Black Press,” Clyburn said.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is the oldest and largest trade group representing the Black Press, comprised of more than 200 Black-owned newspapers operating in the United States.

“I’ve been in [the Black Press].

My daughter and I ran a newspaper down South, so I know that candidates tend to take Black media for granted,” Clyburn said. “They tend to judge Black media the same way they

do other media and you just can’t do that, because the business model is totally different.”

Each Sunday after attending Morris Brown A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., Clyburn said he and other churchgoers habitually pick up the local Black-owned newspaper.

“People tend to pay attention to the headlines, the stories and the ads in the Black Press so it’s vitally important that candidates know this,” Clyburn said.

A former history teacher, Clyburn said Trump’s obsession with dismantling Obama’s legacy is reminiscent of tactics employed by Andrew Johnson to demean his predecessor, Abraham Lincoln.

Johnson, who was impeached by House in 1868, had a vision of America as a White man’s government, according to historians.

“If you remember, it’s the same kind of reaction Johnson had to Lincoln and I remember sitting alone once in the Oval Office with Obama and I told him that this would be the kind of reaction he could expect,” Clyburn said. “[Obama] was never going to get the kind of respect for his presidency that was shown to presidents before him,” Clyburn said. “The narrative that exists in this country is that there are certain things that Black folks are not supposed to do and one of those things is becoming

the president of the United States and [President Trump] and his administration, feel they have to do whatever they can to wipe out any semblance that Barack Obama was ever president of the United States.”

Clyburn continued: “[Trump] has a deep-seated hatred for people of color and it manifests itself every day.”

Though he doesn’t support or agree politically with former Trump aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, Clyburn said he was deeply troubled when Trump referred to her as a “low life” and a “dog.”

“I’m the father of three daughters and I’m deeply insulted by the president of the United States referring to an African American women the way he referred to her,” he said. “Politics aside, I’m insulted that the president of the United States would denigrate the office in this way.”

Clyburn continued: “The president asked an important question when he was running, ‘What do we have to lose?’ Well, we have lost dignity and the respect of the presidency, because of his coarseness in the office. When you lose respect, you’ve lost about everything there is to lose.”

While he still supports Pelosi, Clyburn said that if the Democrats take back the House, he’s up for the job as speaker.

The values for properties in Harlem continue to escalate!

More and more individuals who are earning good solid incomes are expressing their mounting frustration over this crisis. It appears that no low to moderate income individuals or families can afford to purchase a home in Harlem. This is becoming a big problem for Harlem residents who are committed to owning a home and staying in Harlem.

This is the new reality facing prospective first time Harlem home buyers. Expect to have an enormous amount of money saved if you are to successfully complete your purchase. Consider this fact

even if you get a government backed Federal Housing Administration mortgage (FHA), you will need a minimum of 3.5% for the down payment on a one family home.

A two- bedroom condo could be selling for as much as $450,000 or more. That would require you to have a down payment for $15,700 plus another approximately $20-25,000 for closing costs.

Your loan amount for this purchase would be $434,300.

If you are interested in purchasing a two or three family home the purchase price is around $1.5 million or more.

You may be required to have a down payment of 10-20% of the purchase price. In that case your down payment amount would be around

$100,000 – 200,000!

However, most lenders are only approved for a mortgage for about 2 ½ - 3 ½ your annual income. So, in this example for this loan amount you would need to have an annual income of at least $250,000 – 350,000. If your income is in this range, you are not considered a low to moderate buyer. However, you are to be congratulated because right now you are one of the fortunate few individuals who can afford to purchase a home in Harlem.

Jammin’ with the Fam at Riverbank Park

n August 12, Jazzmobile hosted a family celebration with Cuban music and a special salute to Former State Assemblyman Denny Farrell at Riverbank State Park as part of the Harlem/ Havana series.

Jazzmobile Director Robin Bell-Stevens, alongwith Voza Rivers, honored the memory of Denny Farrell. The deceased politician’s family attended the event, expressing appreci-

ation for acknowledgement from the community recognizing the achievements of Denny Farrell The featured artists at the event were Michael Valdez and the Feeling Collective, an Afro-Cuban band that is known for combining jazz music with Bossa nova.

Their rhythms are a throwback to 1940s Cuban music such as Boleros, Rumbas, and Guarachas. Their music even gave way to a mini dance performance by a group of talented young

Jaambo’s sound which infuses West African tunes with Mambo music, was a joy to hear. “Jaambo is a collective. A kaleidoscope of music all over the planet. We try to do music for the Caribbean, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and America. We do American jazz. We do everything,” said Don. Don also highlighted the strong connection between

Latin and African music.

“You know a lot of people say Latin rhythms, but they’re African rhythms. . .African rhythms with the Spanish songs and the flavor.”

The final performance came from Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, a jazz group that wants to reestablish Harlem “as the Big Band Mecca of the world.”

n Tuesday, August 14 , 2018 the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (“GHCC”) held their annual NYC Senior Citizens Day. The 2nd floor Art Gallery in the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building located at 163 West 125th Street was the site for the free indoor expo that was free and open to the public from 10 am to 3 pm. Eighteen table stations were set up in the gallery that offered a myriad of services and/or tips geared towards senior citizens or their caregivers.

The Main Stage on St. Nicholas Avenue was the site for the Harlem Music Festival. The Uptown Saturday Concert started off with Harlem YMCA instructor Phyllis “Love Yourself” warming the crowd up with some aerobic exercise moves.

Local vocalists and bands performed before Marvin Sapp took the stage and sang 4 gospel songs; he had us praising the Lord on a Saturday afternoon. Performers from the Broadway musical “Smokey Joe’s Café” sang 3 numbers from their show before they headed off for 2 performances later that day.

DJ Red Alert took the stage and mixed 11 Aretha Franklin tunes that had the crowd dancing, singing along and reminiscing the recently departed Queen of Soul. Next up was Leon

They jammed us out of 135th Street to Aretha Franklin, Teena Marie, James Brown, Chaka Khan and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

When the party was over folks filed out filled with good vibes having rocked to some great music.

How Far can You See?

I

n a previous article I wrote about how important it is to be aware of and to learn to use our all-seeing third eye, also known as the pineal gland. The third eye is in the front of the brain behind our forehead in between the two eyes we are aware of. Many are not aware of the third eye, but many may not truly understand how far we can really see with the two eyes we are aware of.

One of my favorite Taoist authors Wu Wei an-

swers the question of How Far Can You See in his book “The I Ching Handbook” by saying “Everything we see is inside our heads inside of each eye are close to hundred million rods and cones. These rods and cones are stimulated by the rays of light that enter your eye which, in turn, create impulses that travel along the optic nerve system to the brain.”

The brain receives those impulses and forms a picture. That picture is inside your head and formed by your brain, within your brain. Master Wei also writes that “We never actually see an object, the only thing we see are light rays being radiated by or reflected from ob-

jects.” The view we have of the world is simply a picture that appears to be outside, but actually it is all inside your head.

When I started thinking about this the Magic Eye 3D computer-generated illusions came to mind.

If you look at the Magic Eye illusion for a while, a 3D image seems to “magically” appear, this will happen for some quicker then others. I use a Magic Eye book at our center and in workshops as a tool to explain the concept of enlightenment. According to Wu Wei “Changing the way you see things is much easier then changing the things you see.”

The Egg Roll Queen’s next hurdle is to get packaging created so she can have her product in larger retailers and be able to ship across the country.

arlem Masters Owner Polo Greene was giving out free haircuts from 12-3pm on August 14 in front of Liberty Tax on 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. His reason? “Well because I think that it’s a good thing for the community to donate my goods and services,” said Greene. Events like these can benefit lower income households and Greene is definitely well aware of this.

Harlem resident “Dee” getting his haircut claimed he’d never turn down a free haircut and after the impressive job from Greene he would definitely consider going to his barbershop on 141st and Malcolm X Blvd.

“This is positive because when you get a haircut you have a conversation with the barber, that’s good.”

Greene opened his barber shop 18 years ago, but he originally started cutting hair back in 1989. He highlighted how busy his shop gets on the weekend, which

is why he decided to have it on a Tuesday.

A good haircut can benefit men greatly, appearance-wise, but in certain cases barbers can also be like a therapist to their clients. “We’re kind of like psychiatrists, we talk to people, we kind of rationalize with things because sometimes people might come to the shop feeling very emotional about something,” explained Greene.

Greene and Dee agreed it’s good for men to allow themselves the chance to open up with their barbers, where they otherwise could not. They’re given the freedom to speak freely with other men. Harlem Masters Barbershop isn’t only for men, women are also clients and Greene said, some come seeking advice from the male perspective.

ngela Fuller has been in the food service industry for 30 years. Ms. Fuller has been called the unofficial Egg Roll Queen of Harlem and the name felt right so Angela decided to keep it. Ms. Fuller studied at Monroe College and graduated with an Associate Degree in Pastry & Baking. After purchasing a spoiled egg roll after work 25 years ago, Angela decided she could do better and she went to the library to do some research (you couldn’t google recipes or watch a YouTube how to video back then), started shopping for ingredients down in Chinatown and her vegan/vegetarian egg rolls were created; it’s her greatest culinary accomplishment to date.

Over the last 25 years, The Egg Roll Queen has been sold her vegan egg rolls in Fairway, Gourmet Garage, at Columbia University and The Natural Food Store.

unusual; having grown up in rural Wisconsin , Kessler had no frame of reference, and she paid it little heed.

Eventually, though, she began to see that the model Uber was using – modified in so many ways – was being used for a lot of start-ups and could, potentially, benefit a lot of people. Was this gig economy really the way of the future?

It had been around awhile: in the early 1970s, Kelly Girls were available for temp work; becoming a Kelly Girl was advertised as a way to pay for life’s extras. But, no surprise, research showed then – as it does now –

our allowance was never enough, as a kid.

Oh, sure, it bought you what you needed but what you wanted, well, you had to figure that out yourself. A dime here, a dollar there, little choresfor-pay, tasks for Grandma and you made it work.

And as you’ll see in the new book, “Gigged” by Sarah Kessler, some things never change.

Back in 2011, when she was a reporter for a tech blog, Sarah Kessler became aware of a new start-up that utilized non-traditional workers in non-traditional ways.

It was called Uber, and its business concept seemed

that temp working and gig economy jobs are taken more as a way to make ends meet.

Intrigued, Kessler began following a few people who paid the bills with a string of non-traditional jobs they took for a variety of reasons. She followed an African American man who tried to bring the gig economy to his impoverished and notso-mobile town. Other profiles were of the young and tech-savvy (or learning). Their backgrounds varied, as did their races; in other words, they fit in with the average gig worker, the numbers of which “grew 47-fold between 2012 and 2015.”

While gig-working did, indeed, pay the bills for Kessler’s subjects, she also learned that it was not all good. Yes, there was “independence, flexibility, and freedom” but at what price? For workers, it offered often-low pay, few-to-no benefits, and no safety net. For employers,

it saved money, but the hassles were daunting and “churn” could churn one’s stomach...

So is this “what the future might look like,” as author Sarah Kessler says?

In “Gigged,” she offers some tantalizing clues and more than one caveat.

For anyone who’s stuffed envelopes for pennies, or wondered if there’s real cash to be made gigging, this book sets it straight: Kessler’s subjects made money but it was hard, hard work and none of them are still gig-economy workers.

Recommendations are sparse. That says a lot.

For business owners, it’s more complicated: temp workers and small tasks seem to go hand-in-

Celebrating the life of Yvonne Marie Kirton 1930-2018

Yvonne was an usher at Siloam Church and attended through the 1980’s.

During the following decade, she was an active member of St. Paul Community Baptist Church where she recently served as a Peridot Collective in the Women’s Ministry.

Yvonne was Treasurer of the Brooklyn Reunion Club and a member of the Jade Social Club, as well as the Democratic Club in Laurelton Queens.

A letter of Comfort was sent to the family by the NAACP, which stated in part “In the struggle for equality and justice, we are often reminded of the fragility of life, yet the reality of personal experience is still daunting. We are very sorry for your loss and offer our prayers and support. We hope many cherished memories, and the love of those surrounding you will provide added comfort during this very difficult time.”

Yvonne leaves to cherish her memories her oldest sister Dr. Marcella Maxwell and a younger brother Lely Redwood, four granddaughters, five great grandchildren, four nieces, five nephews and many, many friends.

t was with a heavy heart the family of Yvonne Marie Kirton announced the passing of the sister of Dr. Marcella Maxwell.

Yvonne was born on July 23, 1930 in Neptune, New Jersey to William Redwood and Ethel Click. She attended Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn, NY. In 1948 Yvonne met Eugene Kirton and they were married in 1950. They began a life in Brownsville, Brooklyn and welcomed their first daughter, Krystal in 1952. Shortly thereafter they moved to the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn on Green Avenue.

They later moved to Jefferson Avenue when they welcomed their second daughter, Ninette. In 1966 they purchase a single-family home in Laurelton, Queens.

Yvonne worked as an office manager for several city marshals before retiring from a position as a supervisor for the Department of Transportation.

By 1991, Yvonne and Eugene had lost both of their daughters. They stepped in to take care of their grandchildren – Ryqui, Janiece, Tyree and Marie. Yvonne was a champion for her grandchildren and made sure they
