This past week on Tuesday, August 13th the Seniors Expo day and luncheon was held at Alhambra Ballroom. This upcoming weekend will be "Summer In the City" and "Harlem Day" on Saturday August 17th and Sunday, August 18th on 135th Street. (see HARLEM WEEK calendar on page 14.)

lumbia University Alfred E. Lerner Hall.

The Basil Paterson Business Awards Luncheon was the highlight of the day.

Byford talked about the challenges he has faced in his efforts to modernize the NY Transit System. He discussed long term and short term plans to improve the system and insured the Harlem audience that the Second Avenue Subway system will be completed.

The topic of one workshop was “Opportunity Zones” with an emphasis on Harlem Opportunity Zones. The New Normal

L

ike many of you I have had to embrace many new normals.

In my personal life, my new normal includes an aging mind and body. In my professional life, I have a change of work focus. In my spiritual life, I have an expanded understanding of God. In my

emotional life, I now include accepting bouts of emotional highs and lows based upon all the other new normals that have impacted me.

The world around us has brought in a ton of new normals. Climate change has introduced unstable weather patterns and changes impacting our ecology. The Catholic Church, Boy Scouts, “Me Too” and “Times Up” revelations and movements have introduced a wave of new normals as it relates to acceptable and unacceptable personal engagement. Fake News, Deep State, social media and White House lows (or highs depending on your view) have introduced new normals in language, accusations and codes of conduct.

rifles have introduced a new normal for ordinary, everyday existence.

We adjust our expectations and interactions with every new normal. I do not know about you, but I feel like I am in a vortex being tossed around. I am holding on to what is most dear to me -- my family and friends. I am shedding that which has not brought joyful and loving meaning into my life (including walking away from negative people). I am also searching my core beliefs to see if those beliefs still hold true.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” Malcolm X said, “We need more light about each other. Light creates understanding, understanding creates love, love creates patience, and patience creates unity.”

I also turned my attention to some of the women poets who feed my soul and to honor Toni Morrison who passed away August 5th, I looked at

her thoughts on love, “Love is divine only and difficult always. If you think it is easy you are a fool. If you think it is natural you are blind. It is a learned application without reason or motive except that it is God.” And, the magnificent Maya Angelou said, “Love recognizes no barriers.

And since I was looking up quotes and reflecting on all that people I admire say, I could not ignore this little warning from George Carlin, “Did you ever stop to think about all the people we kill?

n Saturday, September 21st the world famous Apollo Theater will hold auditions for the 20192020 seasons of its signature program, Amateur Night at the Apollo. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., performers of all types will audition to secure a spot in the Amateur Night season line-up.

Auditions will be held at the Apollo Theater where Amateur Night producers will screen the first 250 vocalists, rappers, dancers, comedians, spoken word artists, and other performers vying for a coveted spot on the Apollo’s stage, where

they will then compete for a chance to win the grand prize amount of $20,000.

Since its inception in 1934, the Apollo Theater’s signature show, Amateur Night, has been one of New York City’s most popular live entertainment experiences, launching the careers of thousands of performers and attracting audiences from all over the world.

Harlem/Havana 2019: Art Exhibition Opens with Cuban Music, Dance

festive public art, music and dance project featuring Liquid Heat | La Rumba Llama opened on Monday, Aug. 5th at the Harlem Hospital Center, 508 Malcolm X Blvd. To create the exhibition, Community Works and New Heritage Theatre Group partnered with the Harlem Arts Alliance, HARLEM WEEK and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

A host of international and local artists and performers from Cuba helped to mark the opening. A pre-exhibition concert with dancing that drew more than 800 people to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

Liquid Heat | La Rumba Llama by artist Jessica Angel is an installation of never-exhibited, life-sized photography that captures the energy

and passion of the Pogolotti community, a Havana neighborhood known for the Rumba.

Along with the photography, there will be an international education program, Cuban music and dance, all as part of HARLEM WEEK. The international public art project brings together in the hospital’s famed Mural Pavilion Mondays through Saturdays through Sept. 23.

A special soundtrack includes a reading by Alden Knight of one of Afro-Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén’s poems

set to Rumba percussion. In addition, Ritmo y Color, a free dance program for children aged 6-12 will run from Monday, Aug. 12 to Friday, Aug. 16, with Cuban dancer/ choreographer Luanda Pau in the pavilion space. The free workshops aim to explore the improvised and endlessly creative nature of Rumba, providing an opportunity to explore Cuban dance through movement and art and creating links to their cultural heritage. The children will give a public, performance to the

public on Saturday, Aug. 17.

A traditional Cuban Rumba will follow the performance with Cuban musicians Melvis Santa and her group, Ashedí. At 3:15 p.m., the Rumba will include a public demonstration, a class with Luanda Pau and then a Rumba gathering for everyone to join in.

in Harlem as it is in Havana.

Jessica Angel celebrates the power of Afro-Cuban Rumba and the sense of community that it brings, and this is what we believe public art is all about. The cultural and historical connection between Harlem and Havana is celebrated and honored through initiatives such as these.”

The Mural Pavilion is a draw by itself, with its WPAera murals that were the first to depict people of color in everyday work situations. Over the last years, the pavilion has

been home to a 30-foot timeline about Harlem’s cultural history as well as a rotating public art exhibitions organized by Community Works NYC. In coming months, Community Works and New Heritage Theatre will be establishing a permanent home on the second floor of the hospital for display of elements from Community Works’ award-winning Harlem Is . . .

like Sylvia’s and Red Rooster and newer versions like BLVD Bistro, also just featured in the New York Times. “Harlem Restaurant Week is a centerpiece of the neighborhood’s efforts to promote its vast array of cultures and cuisines each year,” said Curtis Archer, President of the Harlem Community Development Corporation. “We look forward to celebrating Harlem’s local businesses, community organizations and great restaurants this week and all year round.”

Harlem Restaurant Week was conceived as the reality of the economic downturn set in. With the survival of small businesses in jeopardy, and the community having suffered the loss of several anchor institutions, an enterprising group of local entrepreneurs banded together to create an opportunity for businesses to work together in Central Harlem. The creation of the nonprofit Harlem Park to Park (HP2P) allowed the group to collectively promote marketing and economic development vehicles that helped them grow interest in local businesses from within and outside the community.

“We recognized early on that based on the strength of our Manhattan real estate, we would rebound and our goal was to make sure our local businesses would be positioned to benefit when it happens,” said HP2P founding board member and developer Beatrice Sibblies of BOS Development.

Among those initiatives was Harlem Restaurant Week.

Much like its downtown counterpart, the program offers prix fixe menus from participating restaurants as a way to drive more business to the venues.

Soon, the program’s success would encourage other local merchant groups in Harlem to create restaurant weeks high-

lighting businesses in their neighborhoods. With that came an influx of new dining and entertainment concepts from talented hospitality personalities.

From Matthew Trebek’s ode to Mexico at Oso or a sampling of Harlem’s dozens of unique craft cocktail bars like The Honeywell and Solomon & Kuff on the West side; to East Harlem Bottling Co., Amor Cubano and Nocciola on the East; there are many new finds to discover Uptown during Harlem Restaurant Week.

“Harlem is a blend of neighborhoods that creates a beautiful mix of culture, history and cuisine, making it a truly unique part of Manhattan,”

said Chena Clark, Bradhurst Merchants Association.

“We are thrilled to have this unique neighborhood recognized on such a large scale,” said Carey King of Uptown Grand Central whose member restaurant Uptown Vegan will be among the restaurants offering tastings for $5.

“Harlem is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in the world. So we are thrilled to be at a point where so many of our restaurants are gaining recognition and visibility. We can now provide a platform to present these important venues to the world, just as the culinary experience in other great cities such as New Orleans, Chicago and Atlanta

Unique to Harlem Restaurant Week are the retail offers.

Cultural programming adds an additional nuance to the Harlem Restaurant Week experience. New branding for the program was created by women-owned branding company Sunbird Creative.

“We’re excited to welcome visitors into our restaurants to enjoy the works of some of Harlem’s most talented artists,” said Quenia Abreu, President, NYC Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

Various restaurants are planning entertainment showcases ranging from live jazz and music performances to dance and talks, in the tradition of Harlem’s gathering spots. 6 Things You Need to Know About Vaccinations (Statepoint)

s misinformation continues to spread about vaccines, medical experts are reminding parents and the general public that vaccinations save lives.

“Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that vaccines are among the most effective, safest interventions to prevent illness and protect public health,” says Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of American Medical Association (AMA).

To help dispel misconceptions about vaccinations, the AMA is offering answers to six commonly asked questions.

1. Are vaccines safe? Yes, vaccines prevent individual illness and protect the health of the public. Currently, the U.S. has the safest vaccine supply in its history, accord-

ing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most common side effects are typically very mild, such as pain or swelling at the injection site.

2. Is it true that if everyone else is vaccinated, my family doesn’t need to be?

No. Vaccines not only protect the child or adult who receive them, but also the health of their communities. Some people cannot be vaccinated -- including very young children, cancer patients and those who are immunosuppressed. When immunization rates are high, people in these categories are protected because they’re less likely to be exposed to the disease. As evident from recent measles outbreaks in several states, when individuals aren’t immunized as a matter of personal preference or misinformation, they put themselves

and others at risk of disease.

3. What vaccinations do my children need? Children should be vaccinated according to the recommended schedule of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which is designed to protect young children before they’re likely to be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases and when they’re most vulnerable to serious infections.

4. I don’t want my children to get vaccine-preventable diseases. What’s the earliest age they can be vaccinated? Children can receive their first flu vaccine starting at 6 months old. The recommended age for the first dose of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)

vaccine is 12 to 15 months of age. If you live in a community experiencing an outbreak, or if you travel internationally, your baby may be vaccinated as early as 6 months of age.

Talk to your pediatrician for additional information about when early vaccination may be appropriate.

5. I’m an adult, do I need to get vaccinated? Yes, adults

need vaccines too. Sometimes immunity from childhood vaccines can wear off over time. Adults may also need vaccinations because of their age, job, travel and health conditions. 6. Hasn’t the U.S. eradi-

cated the major diseases that require vaccines? One of the country’s greatest public health success stories is the remarkable decrease in infectious diseases as the result of vaccines. Unfortunately, that success has led some parents to stop vaccinating their children against diseases like measles, meningitis, polio and diphtheria. However, these diseases still exist, and can still debilitate and kill. He plans to use his $12,500 portion for college tuition, to gain the skills needed to make an even greater impact on social issues like hunger. The remaining $2,500 will go to his school to help continue fostering overachievement among its students.

Harlem Wellness Center Offers Drug-Free Pain Management A

Harlem-based health and wellness center is helping New Yorkers suffering from chronic pain and other ailments through alternative methods to treat and manage their injuries and illnesses.

The New York Ki Energy Wellness Center offers specialized, all-natural treatments to manage pain and other chronic symptoms without the use of pain medication.

The nonprofit’s co-founder and director Laura Abad San-

tos-Rogers, a Ki master and holistic and wellness practitioner, said she discovered the healing power of Ki Energy after suffering from chronic fatigue. She said the treatments - which are similar to acupressure relieved all of her symptoms.

“We believe in complementary alternative medicine,” Santos-Rogers told the Harlem News. “What we do is an alternative to medication. There are no side effects…You can learn how to align and not de-

ou are the Big Kahuna.

The Boss, the One in Charge, maker of decisions and teller of things to do.

You’re the Big Cheese with all the responsibility and you ain’t bad at it. So how would you do if, as in the novel, “The Tubman Command” by Elizabeth Cobbs, the very lives of soldiers, women, and children were in your hands?

On so many mornings, Harriet Tubman woke with the lingering feeling of her husband, John, lying next to her.

That hadn’t happened in fifteen years,

though, not since she left him and joined the Underground Railroad. She wasn’t entirely sure where he was but she knew he’d barely recognize her.

So much had changed since then.

All that was just useless thought for another day; there were more important things in front of Harriet. She was thinking of her meeting with General David Hunter of the Union, and how he was going to help her free a thousand slaves.

Just gaining the respect of the soldiers was going to be a challenge.

that the person they called Moses was a man. Nobody ever thought a small woman could be so brave as to snatch slaves from beneath their owner’s noses, but there she was. And she was working on a plan that would boost the morale of the men, and show the Confederacy that the imposing position of Fort Sumter was no obstacle for the Union.

It was a mission that needed care. Every slave on the plantations around the Combahee River knew there were Confederate explosives buried in the Combahee’s silt. At least one slave knew

where they were; Harriet had to find him and learn what he knew, but he was on the notorious Lownes plantation. She’d need to go there and get out without the overseer, Pip-

kin, spotting her. She’d have to help General Hunter find enough men to keep Charleston under control, too, so she’d need to convince more Black men to join the cause. Folks

didn’t think black soldiers could fight. They didn’t think a “puny” woman could lead people to freedom, either, but they had seriously miscalculated…

It’s easy to place our heroes on a pedestal. We do it all the time, but “The Tubman Command” tips perch a bit.

No, you won’t think lesser of Harriet Tubman after you’ve heard this audiobook. Instead, you’ll see that “fierce” is too small a word for Tubman’s personality and her heroism – she repeatedly walked back into a plantation, after all – although author Elizabeth Cobbs reminds readers in so many ways that Tubman was still a woman, probably a mother, absolutely able to fall in love.

This is subtly done with slight liberties taken in her plot aspects, as Cobbs explains in her author’s note.

That’s not a distraction. It, and the performance by Heidi Franklin, enhances a tale that will thrill you and make you scream “Nooooo!” “The Tubman Command” is perfect for Civil War buffs, novel lovers, and anyone who wants a big story.
