Michelle Obama Joins New “When We All Vote” Campaign for the Midterms

F

ormer First Lady Michelle Obama is featured in a video along with celebrities Tom Hanks, Janelle Monáe, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Lin-Manuel Miranda to encourage people to register and vote.

In less than 100 days, the midterm elections that will either expand President Trump’s power or greatly restrict it, will take place on November 6. There has been much talk about the likelihood of a “blue wave” that could give Democrats the gavel and investigative power in Congress

over the next two years of Trump’s presidency.

The underlying urgency of Michelle Obama’s message is an unspoken aspect of her new registration effort.

The name of the new effort, “When We All Vote,” is also an indication that the former first lady is well aware of the fact that higher voter turnout usually leads to Democratic victories at the polls. The effort is also a challenge for registered voters to participate in elections “both big and small.” Though the effort is billed as “non-partisan,” the sense of urgen-

cy about the country’s direction under President Trump’s leadership is an unavoidable backdrop.

Several live events are also expected as part of the effort between now and election day.

Former President Barack Obama is expected to hit the campaign trail to assist Democrats who are looking to take back the House and Senate in 2019. On July 31, the former President announced that he is endorsing 81 Democratic candidates on the ballot this November.

There is a record num-

ber of women on the ballot this year. Many of the endorsements former President Obama has focused on were candidates who worked in his administration, like Colin Allred, Lauren Underwood and Richard Cordray.

The Obamas have been relatively quiet since departing the White House in early 2017, but that is likely to change.

The former president and the former first lady’s launch of “When We All Vote” is likely to be only the first of several post White House efforts they will participate in.

“I’m confident that,

together, they’ll strengthen this country we love by restoring opportunity that’s broadly shared, repairing our alliances and standing in the world, and upholding our fundamental commitment to justice, fairness, responsibility, and the rule of law,” Obama wrote in his

endorsement statement.

ere are some more common mistakes that have plagued prospective first-time buyers.

These mistakes have thwarted their efforts to complete the home buying process. Making a mistake during the home buying process can set back your projected purchase date by several months costing you valuable time and money.

Here are some mistakes to avoid: (1) Do not put down any money until after you had the property inspected. Use a licensed New York City inspector. Most homes in New York are sold “as is.” Meaning what you see; is what you get. Many first-time buyers are just happy to be finally at this stage of the process.

If you put money down on the property before getting it inspected, the seller is less motivated to make the “needed” repairs. They already have your money. It can be difficult to get out to the deal.

(2) Attend an approved housing counseling workshop before starting the process. People who buy without attending a workshop are more likely to make costly mistakes. The home buying workshop will give you insights on how to navigate through this difficult process.

y name is Dennis Richmond, Jr. and I am a second year graduate school student at Sarah Lawrence College. I am the Founder and Director of The New YorkNew Jersey Historically Black College and University Initiative (The NYNJ HBCU Initiative). For years, I have beaten the drum for HBCUs across the country. I have gained the support of people from many ages and from many backgrounds. Some of The NYNJ HBCU Initiative’s sponsors include the Executive Director of the Nepperhan Community

Center in Yonkers, NY, Dr. Jim Bostic, Th.D., New York State Senators Shelley Mayer and Andrea Stewart-Cousins, New York State Assembly members J. Gary Pretlow and N. Nick Perry, and rapper, songwriter, and business owner Jadakiss.

I have also gained the support of rapper and former Love & Hip Hop: New York cast member Cardi B. With the Back-ToSchool season rapidly approaching for students across the country, it is imperative that students have an idea about what they need to do when they get there. I would like to

offer some advice to high school students and college students.

First off, for all the high school students in New York, please be sure to study diligently for your Regents Exams.

I understand that these exams may be trying, but they are possible to pass. Trust me. I failed the Earth Science regents a few times before

I finally passed. Don’t give up. For all the college students headed back to school, be sure to begin studying early for exams like the Praxis and the GRE. Different graduate schools look at these scores differently, but it is important to try your best.

For all the high school seniors, and as I refer to them, my “little

sisters” and my “little bruvas”, make sure that you choose at least six colleges that you wish to attend. No matter what your background. for every predominately white institution or state school that you choose, be sure to choose an HBCU. If you choose three schools in New York, be sure to include three HBCUs. College students, it is never too late to apply for scholarships. Make an account on UNCF’s website and be sure to update your profile weekly.

My last piece of advice is something that I cannot stress enough, and this is for all students. Please make sure to keep a professional

presence on social media. You never know who is looking at what you post, and you do not want to take any chances of potential employers or people in positions of power getting the wrong impression. Seriously. Be careful what you post on social media. We live in the era of people openly screenshotting and screen recording and often times, reposting or sending the photographs and videos to others. To all of my youngins, please be careful.

How New Technologies Will Support STEAM Learning this School Year (Statepoint)

ith each new school year comes a brand-new set of subjects, books and teachers.

It also means new technologies being introduced into the classroom.

As students head back to school, here is a look at the technologies that will support STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning this year.

• Digital Art: Enter some art classes today and you may find a dearth of paints, brushes and charcoal. Today, art students can learn the same painting, drawing and sculpting techniques they previously would have learned using traditional supplies, only with digital tools instead. While the traditional mediums aren’t completely going away any time soon, today’s students

can benefit from the versatility that cutting-edge tools supply, from the time a project idea is conceived through when the finished product is shared with the world.

• Visual Science: Whether it’s an anatomical diagram of the human heart or a map of the Milky Way, every science teacher knows that a picture’s worth a thousand words, particularly when it’s a sharp, clear picture. of all ages and abilities to hone their coding skills. From straight-forward instructional apps to those that gamify the learning process, young coders-in-training have a wealth of resources at their fingertips.

• Intuitive Music: New technology is rocking the music education boat in an effort to make learning an in-

strument more intuitive. For example, Casio’s LK-265 is outfitted with such tools as a Key Lighting System, Voice Fingering Guide and Step-up Lesson System, enabling beginners to learn built-in songs at their own pace. Additionally, an LCD display makes mastering music notation and correct hand positioning easy. Stu-

dents don’t even have to wait for teacher feedback -- the keyboards have a Scoring System that evaluates performance.

• In-Depth Math: Today’s students are getting a closer look at the inner workings of mathematics than their predecessors, thanks to new graphing calculators, such as the fx-CG50 PRIZM and fx-CG500, which offer expanded features, including the ability to easily draw three dimensional graphs such as planes, cylinders and spheres, and view them from various angles to better analyze their shapes. A cross-section option and special zoom function allow students to closely examine graphs for in-depth analysis and an improved catalog function means students can use commands more easily and quickly.

Are you ready to Tech? Youth take lead at Harlem Week Hack-a-thon

n August 1st the fourth annual Harlem Week Youth Education Career Conference and Hack-a-thon was held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Teens and camp kids scored a fun time and laughs while creating an app in a timed competition. Some of the options they had, but were not limited to include: 3D video game, music app, food app, voter registration app, and fashion app.

According to Co-Founder and CEO of Silicon Harlem Clayton Banks, the Hacka-thon is a space for youth to be creative tech leaders.

“There’s an opportunity for young people to stretch their minds, and ideas they can actually promote in a competition called the Hack-athon. Young people are able

to come together as a team,” said Banks.

Before the actual Hacka-thon, Banks moderated a panel called “The Internet of Things: Life in 2040” with panelists: Helen Kogan, Executive Director of NPower; Lisa Osbourne of Black Public Media; and Jaclyn Valero, Executive Producer/Strategist of Lucy Loves Cloud.

The panelists discussed the importance of technology in our present and future, focusing on trending topics such as bitcoin and virtual reality games/apps. Panelist Jaclyn Valero offered her perspective: “The future is tech based, everything is going to use some type of tech. Your homes, cars, the process is already started.

Harlem YMCA Under New Leadership

H

arlem native Steve Lawrence recently joined the Harlem branch of the YMCA as the new Executive Director. An energetic leader with more than 15 years of executive level leadership in youth development, board development, fund raising, government contracts, transitional housing and community building, Lawrence is excited to return to his roots in Harlem as head of the historic and storied branch.

Before taking the helm at the Harlem YMCA, Lawrence served as Research and Grants Administrator of the City of Mt.

Vernon, NY, where he designed, coordinated and executed the fund development program for the City of Mt. Vernon. Among his major accomplishments were creation and implementation of a Grants Tracking & Accountability system, as well as, writing grants that brought over $12.M to the City since January

2015.

On the job since April 2018 and reconnecting with friends and stakeholders within the Harlem community, Lawrence is committed to the nonprofit’s focus to provide access and equity to all youth and serve the underrepresented and underserved in the Harlem community.

“We are a fundraising organization.

Ultimately, I want the YMCA to be the people’s charity of choice,” he said.

“We want people to feel they are a part of something bigger and they are doing something important for their community when

they stand in support of their local YMCA.” said Lawrence, who also served as legislative aide to former Congressman Charles B Rangel and former Governor David Paterson.

“I am blessed that I have the opportunity to serve this YMCA and this community that I love” Lawrence continued. “I am inheriting a great legacy and joining a tradition of excellence, service and results set by the leaders who have held this position before me and upon whose shoulders I stand. My mandate is to build upon the track record of success already established and thus leverage our or-

ganizational assets to strengthen the Harlem community.”

Lawrence holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Government and Politics from St. John’s University, is a Coro Fellow and completed Columbia University Graduate School of Business’ Institute for Non-Profit Management certificate program.

He is married to Rosia Blackwell Lawrence, communications and public relations specialist, who is the current Eastern Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and are parents to three sons and guardian to two nieces.

Be the Master of your Ship

e often misuse our natural power to heal ourselves, to create financial freedom and to live a productive meaningful life. The understanding of the relationship between our conscious mind and our subconscious mind is the key to the positive and productive use of our god given ability to create our reality. Joseph Murphy gives a wonderful example of the above statement in his international classic “The Power of Your Sub-

conscious Mind” a must read for those interested in the mental science of thought manifestation.

Murphy explains the important relationship between our conscious and subconscious minds this way: The conscious mind is like the navigator or captain at the bridge of a ship. He directs the ship and signals orders to the men in the engine room, who in turn control the boilers, instruments and gauges to keep the ship sailing. The men in the engine room do not know where the ship is going; they would go on the rocks if the man on the bridge issued faulty or wrong instructions Murphy goes on to

say: “your conscious mind is the captain the master of your ship. Our subconscious mind takes the orders we give based on what we believe and except to be true”. Our subconscious mind runs twenty four seven, creating reality from our thoughts. Our subconscious mind is connected to the mind of the universe as well as all of the working parts of our body, or our ship. If you believe it is hot you will be hot even if it is cold.

support that thought. The subconscious mind accepts what is impressed upon it or what you consciously believe. Never say I know I will be late or I will never find a parking space. Try to always think about the things you want to happen and then take note of the results.

The subconscious mind is amenable to the power of suggestion. A person’s body can change for the better or the worse by a suggestion when in a hypnotic state. If a person in a hypnotic state is told that they have a fever their body will react with the systems of a fever, if they are told that they cannot walk they will not be able to walk. Non

hypnotic suggestions can also influence our subconscious mind which in turn can influence our reality.

What you think and how you let others influence your thoughts will have a direct relationship to what you and your body perceives to be a reality.

If five people tell you that you look tired you will start to feel tired even if you are not. In another dialog I will write about the power of suggestion; it has been used for centuries to control the masses. We are now in a time where it is extremely important to understand the power of our subconscious mind, and become the true master of our ship.

THE ADAMS REPORT The Connection Between Shoes and Life

T

hank God for parental guidance and influence! All those days of being forced to go to school when we wanted to play hooky, or didn’t want to face or deal with someone who was giving us a bad time, or didn’t have our homework ready really paid off. I can remember my fourth-grade year . . . not wanting to go to school because my parents bought me a really ugly pair

of black-and- white saddle oxford shoes. I had to wear those shoes every day! Needless to say, those shoes caused me more grief than I could bear. I wanted something stylish and cute, but my parents went for sturdiness and versatility - they reasoned that everything goes with black and white! I was the only one in the entire school with those shoes. I looked and felt like Popeye’s girlfriend, Olive Oyl. But you can also bet that I had to wear those shoes, no if, ands or buts about it. The ridicule was intense for an already insecure girl. My dad’s words of advice were, “Sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you, now go to school!”

So I decided to only wear black-and-white clothing to school. I also decided to put a smile on my face and walk

proud in those ugly shoes, which I lovingly cleaned and polished each day. The teasing and taunting gradually stopped. Whew! I also thanked God when I grew out of those shoes. I’m not saying that my shoe problem is on level with any of the challenges I’ve faced as an adult, but when I think back, I’m rather proud of myself for having come up with a solution to the problem. The shoes didn’t change: I did.

It happens to all of us: From time to time life throws us a few curve balls. The lessons learned in our youth can help us to get up and dust ourselves off and keep going regardless. Whether it’s a work problem, financial problems, relationship problems, health problems or just plain old problems; we manage to make it through the day.

Nevertheless I’ve noticed that sometimes when I’m faced with a “situation” I forget that early lesson. Then I tend to focus on the situation and forget about my needs. You probably do that too - and it’s not good. The first thing to go is usually the manicure, the hair appointment, working out, eventually I fall into a rut. The rut becomes a pit full of me. I don’t have to tell you what comes next: sleepless nights (under eye circles, fatigue, anxiety), loss of physical energy (inability to think and reason properly), over or under eating (weight gain or loss, vitamin depletion) - and on and top of it all raggedy nails, split ends and poor physical condition!

How we choose to deal with adversity is important.

This may sound a little silly, but I want to encourage you to

do everything you can to look and feel good no matter what the problem. That’s right, you heard me! While tackling a problem, always take care of your needs first. It’s the best piece of advice anyone ever gave me. How can you possibly take care of anyone or anything else if you can’t take care of yourself? I’m not talking about selfishness.

Taking care of yourself won’t make the problem go away, but you’ll feel better about yourself while dealing with it.

Practice fulfilling your needs until it becomes a habit; then, whenever the kids on the playground of life give you heck, the kid in you will be able to smile, hold her head high and walk proud in her shoes! Now go to school! Think about it.

he Pastoral Meeting held by Donald Trump and some prominent Black Pastors has caused quite a stir in the nation. Pastor John Grey went on social media to explain WHY HE WAS THERE. Rev. Lisa Jenkins, Pastor of S. Matthew’s Baptist Church, who wasn’t invited by the way, preached a sermon last week entitled, Guess Who’s Not Coming to Dinner.” Sub-text – “How to turn down an invite from the enemy.”

I

n church, you sing a lot of songs.

Some are just for Sunday School, and you clap when you sing them.

Others make you dance right in your seat. And some songs you sing in church are very old and have a quiet, hidden meaning. In “How Sweet the Sound” by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Frank Morrison, you’ll learn about one song that feels a lot like a prayer.

John Newton was not a very nice man.

He was a brawling sailor, and that was why he was so mean: he had to be tough,

and that meant fighting and swearing and hurting people. He’d been doing it for years and he didn’t have plans to stop. Toughness was in his blood.

But then, one night, there was a storm and John was at the wheel of the ship as she tossed back and forth on the waves. The rest of

the crew was frightened and, truthfully, so was John.

He began to think about all the things he’d done in his life. He remembered how much he loved his mother, and he recalled when she died.

Was that when John became a not-so-nice guy?

Was that when he started “picking fights” and arguing?

No, John was still nice then. He met Mary, the woman he loved, and they had plans for the future until the Navy nabbed John and forced him to enlist.

Ah, there’s where John became a cruel bully. It hap-

pened aboard a ship, where he worked hauling humans over the ocean to bring them to slavery. Oh, John suddenly understood – and he began to pray.

He prayed when he bailed water. He prayed as he “plugs leaks.” He talked to God while he was at the helm of the ship. He prayed and prayed until the sun peeked over the horizon on wet but peaceful sails. He prayed because the crew still wasn’t out of danger and he kept praying until the ship reached land.

God spared John’s life and, in gratitude, John became a preacher and spoke out against slave ships.

Marion Bondurant. 1939 - 2018

I

t was with a heavy heart the NY Coalition of One Hundred Black women announced the passing of one of their dedicated long-time member, Marion Bondurant.

“Marion and I served on the Board of Directors for the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women together as officers before I became president. I will miss her sisterhood and giving spirit. She was so proud of her family and shared many of the accomplishments of her grandson with us,” said Cheryl Green-Foster, President, New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women Marion Bondurant was

born on June 11, 1939, the second daughter of the late Lucille and Charles Davis in Brooklyn NY. She attended PS 167 and Erasmus Hall High School.

Marion was an avid reader and movie goer. Saturday mornings were spent going to the movies to see a double feature with her cousins and other neighborhood children.

When the other children returned home she stayed to see the double feature again. Her Mother was known to the cashier at the theatre as the lady who paid to go inside to drag her daughter out by the ear. Her love of movies turned into a passion for the arts. Her en-

joyment of reading focused her as a student into achieving a National Merit Scholarship to attend Hunter College. She married the late Milton Bondurant of Bronx NY during college. From this union she had a daughter Michele Bondurant (Berry) and later, grandson Theodore B e r r y .

She passed on the love of the theatre to her daughter and grandson. This also led her to participate in the development of the Cinque Gallery supporting the work of African American Artists and to work at the Schomburg Library.

She attended hundreds of art exhibits and showings by African American Artists over

and mission of the Coalition to act an advocate for Black Women.

Marion recently joined National Urban League Guild, the fundraising arm of the National Urban League, to use her talents in fundraising.

The Guild promotes volunteer service in the areas of fundraising, community service, community awareness and leadership.

She loved spending time with her daughter and grandson traveling to different places around the world, while enjoying her favorite

the years.

Marion worked as a professional fundraiser for the American Civil Liberties Union ( ACLU), The National Medical Fellowship, United Negro College Fund, and the Children’s Art Carnival. She developed a relationship with the Ford Foundation and other philanthropic organizations.

This enabled her to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for community initiatives, ultimately supporting education and empowerment for youth and African American physicians.

Marion’s second career was that of a licensed insurance broker. She worked hand in hand with her sister Renee Bluford after the Opening of the Bluford Insurance Agency in Queens NY. There she was able to make a difference in that community lending her expertise for fundraising, working with campaigns and causes and generally available to help, teach and encourage.

Marion was a lifetime member of the NAACP where she served on the Board of Directors for many years. She chaired the Mid-Manhattan Branch of the NAACP Annual Luncheon for many years which has now become one of their major sources of funding.

She was given the NAACP’s Outstanding Service Award for her labor of love.

As a long-standing member for over forty years of the New York Coalition of 100 Black Women (NYCOBW), Founding Chapter she served on the Executive Board for many years and also as the Third Vice President for Membership. She participated in the (NYCOBW) Signature Role Model Program, the Arts Committee, the Political Action Committee and the Fundraising Committee. Marion was dedicated to the goals

pastime, collecting art and shopping. Her grandson was her most favorite topic of conversation for whom she was so proud.

On Thursday morning July 26, 2018 Marion departed this life. She is predeceased by her parents the late Lucille and Charles Davis. She will be sorely missed by her daughter, Michele Bondurant Berry and grandson, Theodore Berry, her sisters Renee Bluford, Patricia Dejlitko and Carole Davis, brother-in-law David Bluford, nieces and goddaughters Pamela Bluford, Paula Rainer, Brooke Blaine and nieces Penny Garrett and Rebecca Dejlitko, nephew Lathell Blaine II and by a host of great nieces and great nephews, cousins,family and friends.

A celebration of Marion’s life was held at Benta’s Funeral Home on August 8th.

There will be a final viewing on Thursday, August 9th from 10-11am. The funeral service will start at 11am. Immediately after the service internment will be at The Mount Rest Cementery in Butler, New Jersey.
