Are You Prepared for Hurricane Season and Other Storm Emergencies?

urricane season is in full swing, running from June through November.

Unfortunately, no one can stop a tropical storm or hurricane from happening and both types of weather events are increasingly impacting larger portions of the U.S. However, there are steps you can take that will help you weather a storm and better ensure the safety of your family.

The experts at Freddie Mac recommend doing the following.

• Know where to go in the event of a local area

evacuation. Your area’s emergency management agency can provide this information.

• Gather and protect important household documentation, including birth certificates, passports, marriage licenses, mortgage statements, deeds, insurance policies and medical files.

• Protect your valuables and family mementos by storing them in a safety deposit box, fire– and water–proof safe or moving them to higher ground where they are less likely to incur damage.

• Download an app for your smartphone that

allows your friends and family to know if you are safe. The American Red Cross has a free hurricane app as do many for-profit organizations. Other apps that are available include weather tracking apps, and apps that can help victims of storms find each other to pool resources and offer one another assistance. Be sure to keep your phone fully charged as long as your home has power and consider having an external battery pack on hand as well.

• Assemble an emergency supply kit that includes water, flashlights, non-perishable food, first-

aid supplies, batteries, a radio and medication.

• Create a family emergency plan and make sure everyone knows what to do and when.

• Prepare your home for heavy rainfall and

The Way To Happiness Harlem Block Clean Up

hey cleaned the Block and did Not Stop, they initiated their efforts at Dream Street Park!

Dream Street Park is adjacent to the luxury high rise apartment building in Harlem on East 124th street. A band of cleaners of all ages gathered on Saturday, July 13th to make local streets in Harlem a non-eyesore and much success was attained. Essence Hayes is the Director of Success (Community Liaison) at the Church of

Scientology Community Center located at 228 East 125th Street. This Clean Up effort was helmed by Ms. Hayes, it is the first of its kind for the Harlem church

and we are assured that it will not be the last.

A total of seven gathered to make the band of cleaners strong, and no one is too small for such a task. Five year

old Matthew Brown led the troop as he scurried along the side walks to pick up debris. Matthew is from Manhattan, New York, his father works for the Church of Scientology of Harlem. “It’s quite nice to see what a helping hand could achieve” said Daisy Duverge, a clean-up helper, also a staff member of the Church. On-lookers were greatly impressed as the team of cleaners donned “The Way To Happiness” attire and accessories. This In the Streets clean up was an effort to promote good behaviors and practices in the community and

also called attention to a dynamic campaign that the Church of Scientology whole heartedly believes in and supports. “The Way To Happiness” Harlem Block Clean-Up was a precept in action; “Safeguard And Improve Your Environment” (Take Care of Your Own Area /Help Take Care of The Planet).

It is the hope and anticipation of the Church, which also serves as a Community Center, that many neighboring businesses will aid in this massive clean-up. The action of cleaning up

collectively drums-up a Feel Good Experience while fostering comradery. It is believed and understood that “Creating a Clean Environment” paves the way to much success and contentment, thereby providing a high level of joy and fulfillment.

Be on the look out and inquire within on how you can participate in the next Harlem Block Clean-up which is scheduled for Saturday, August 11th, 2018 10:00am – 2:00pm.

The activity involves community interaction by all participants day of clean-up, a light breakfast is provided before clean-up, photos are taken throughout activity, memorabilia is dispensed and allocated at time of clean-up and during wrap-up.

Now Is the Time for Black Youth to Take the Mantle of Leadership in America

ithout being given much direction, Black youth have seemingly taken matters into their own hands, relative to their future here in America, by strategizing, organizing and mobilizing.

Whether on social media or through community activism in the streets, Black youth are proactively pushing the agenda forward and forcing society to no longer ignore many of the issues that have been impacting the Black community for decades. Many have decided to take an even greater step towards bringing about change, by getting involved with politics.

These bold efforts to express themselves in ways that are progressive and substantive have given Black youth a clearer vision for their future and an even greater sense of purpose that has given them an alternative to doing things that are detrimental to their future.

Because many of their Black predecessors dropped the ball and failed to effectively protect them from the many dangers and pitfalls they have had to face without adequate support, it forced this new generation of Black freedom fighters to become more knowledgeable about things.

Black youth have chosen to stand up and fight for themselves, in spite of the lack of collective support they have received from the Blacks who came be-

fore them who were beneficiaries of the civil rights struggle.

That is why the Black Lives Matter movement was birthed and gained so much traction.

Black Lives Matter was formed by a small remnant of Black youth who were sick and tired of being sick and tired. This energized group of young, African Americans wanted to do something about the issue of police brutality, as well as other critical issues that were negatively impacting the Black community, particularly Black youth.

Black Lives Matter isn’t the first example of young, African Americans creating movements and platforms to allow their voices to be heard and make a difference. The hip-hop community was formed because many Black youth wanted to express themselves and needed an outlet to talk about the things they were dealing with in their respective communities and facing in this country.

Just as it has been since inception, hip hop has become a steady tool used by Black youth to influence society and make a difference.

While there are a myriad of things currently impacting Blacks in America, the advent of social media has given Black youth the necessary access to news and information to keep them up-to-speed on everything they need to know.

Prior to social media, many young, Black people were disconnected from news and politics and had limited interest in things such as reading newspapers, watching news channels, listening to talk radio or keeping up with major

current events and social issues online.

Now, through social media, Black youth have the ability to get this information in real time and in a way that is interactive and enlightening to them.

This has caused many young, Black people to become more engaged in and educated about issues that truly impact their daily lives.

As America finds itself in the midst of a crucial midterm election, young, African Americans have chosen to get even more involved and are looking for more ways to make a difference, versus looking for leadership and assistance from older Blacks who many believe have abandoned them or from traditional mainstream Black institutions where they feel they don’t belong. Black youth have found themselves searching for answers and looking for quality leadership to help them navigate through these tumultuous waters called life in America.

Getting involved in community activism and politics may be the tools that they need to make more of an impact.

Black youth need direction.

This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be mentored and not ignored. This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be encouraged and not berated. This new generation of freedom fighters needs to be praised and not overly criticized. Many Black youth are tired of having to figure things out on their own, but have come to the realization that they are living in a country that does not seem to value their Black lives. They are fighting for their lives and seeking relevance the only way they know how—through using the tools

and resources they have at their disposal and by getting engaged by any means necessary.

If Black youth are shown the importance of politics, the effectiveness of government and the impact of voting, they will do those things and be excited about being a part of them.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which represents over 200 Black-owned media companies across the U.S., recognizes Black youth as an important part of the future of America. Through their efforts to register 5 million new, Black voters before the midterm elections in 2018, tapping into the energized spirit of Black youth in this country to accomplish that goal has been a primary focus of the group and one they believe will make a huge difference come November.

Encouraging Black youth to step up and get involved is an important step, but the role that Black parents and responsible adults in the Black community play in supporting Black youth is extremely critical and will help them effectively deal with the social ills and issues they are facing in America today.

Until Black youth are shown that, however, it will fall on deaf ears.

he fair market values for homes in Harlem are outrageous! But what is equally distressing are the number of costly mistakes many prospective firsttime home buyers are making which will prevent them from completing the closing process. Recently several mortgage loan officers have shared with me some horrific stories of mistakes people have made that have caused their mortgage application to be denied at the very end of the application process.

Remember until you have signed the closing documents and have received the keys to your property; you have not completed the process.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to the completion of the process: (1) do not open any

new credit accounts or make any additional large purchases until after you have closed on the purchase of your property. Every time you make a purchase your debt to income ratio (DTI) will be adversely impacted. If your DTI exceeds 43% you can be denied a mortgage.

(2) If possible do not change jobs or vocational careers until after you have closed on your home. Lenders want to see a minimum of 24 consecutive months of work history. If you have changed careers you will need 24 months in the new position before getting approval for your mortgage.

Lenders will verify your employment throughout the application process.

(3) Never, ever co-sign

for a friend or a relative before completing the mortgage process. By co-signing you are assuming the debt for this purchase and now you have placed your mortgage application in jeopardy of not being approved. Under normal circumstances, these mistakes would not be so detrimental except when attempting to obtain a mortgage. They can be so devastating that you can miss the completing purchase of your home. Do not lose sight of your goal that you have been working so hard to achieve.

ncarceration is modern day slavery for Blacks and it is upclose and personal in Liza Jessica Peterson’s one-woman show “The Peculiar Patriot” playing at National Black Theatre in Harlem. Peterson wrote and performs this explosive play. She gives us the main character of Betsy Laquanda Ross and we go with her as she is searched and frisked before getting to visit with her childhood friend JoAnn, framed and put in prison for drug possession at her Beauty Salon.

Peterson educates the audience about the horrible way that Blacks are being framed, arrested and convicted for drugs that weren’t theirs. She also talks about how the time that Blacks get doesn’t fit the crime. She educates the audience on what prisons mean to the rural towns upstate that they are built in. Prisons mean construction, jobs, and even numbers in the census, which gives these areas more representation.

Peterson breaks things down using humor, but 12 also facts. As you watch

her perform this 90 minute, no intermission play, you realize that this isn’t just entertainment, it is an education. Peterson brilliantly transitions between characters from Laquanda to her Spanish boyfriend Pablo, to her Black ex-boyfriend Curtis, both drug dealers.

Laquanda is someone who has known hardship from a young age. Her mother is a drug addict and her father, a Black Panther, was killed in prison by the Correction officers. She was in a juvenile detention center and now as an adult spends her free time getting on the bus and going to visit family and friends that are incarcerated. She updates them on the lives of those back home and lets them know who is in jail now and how that’s

going.

There is something so powerful about watching this production. You laugh, you think, you realize how horrible things are. You also realize that you should never judge people in prison because you don’t know why they are there and you also have no idea what they go through while in jail. Imagine being there and having your dignity and your humanity taken away. Imagine working for free and having all your freedoms taken away.

The Awakening of the Third Eye

ime, there is so much of it if you use it properly and so little of it if it’s wasted.

You can’t seem to catch up if you somehow manage to get behind and yet it keeps on marching on . . . . There is a time for everything, waking sleeping, working, playing, eating, the list goes on. How you spend your time is up

up missing the time to do it later because you will see that you are running out of time . . . again!

Then there are those we count on to always be on time, especially if we need them to help us monitor .our time, they normally provide services and operate on time schedules, trains, busses, subways and the like. We are sometimes amused (or not) if they run late, but their errors seem to really mess up our time!

They make us realize that we should have given ourselves more time in the first place!

There are those who could really care less about our time, even though you are paying for their time, doctors, hairdressers, man-

to you. As a commodity, time can’t be sold or bartered for more time; that would require you be (mean that you would be) on someone else’s time. . . or worse yet. . . borrowed time! It is also important to give time, even if you don’t have any to other people or efforts. Giving time requires relinquishing even more valuable . . . you guessed it . . . time!

How do you make more time for yourself if you don’t have time?

Truthfully, you don’t and can’t because your time isn’t yours! Right? Is it really possible to give something that doesn’t belong to you? When it comes to time, the answer is yes because if you fail to find time then you end

Is there ever a time to just be in the moment as life coaches are encouraging us to do? How many moments equal too much time? What ever happened to taking your time? It is said that time waits for no man or woman for that matter. Be thankful for the time you have and make the most of it before today becomes yesterday’s tomorrow. Think about it.

ife has handed you a lot of chances.

You’ve taken some, for good or not. Others, you’ve passed up, and regretted it. Maybe you’d be richer today. Maybe you’d be poorer. For sure, you’d have an existence unlike what you have now and, as in the new novel “Better Late Than Never” by Kimberla Lawson Roby, you wonder what might’ve been…

First Lady Charlotte Black was tired.

Every Sunday for nineteen years, she’d gotten up, put on her finest clothes and her best face, and gone to church with her husband, Reverend Curtis Black, leader of Deliverance Outreach. That’s a lot

of Sundays, a lot of dressing up, of pretending to be nice to people Charlotte really didn’t want anything to do with.

She was going to tell Curtis soon that she was taking a sabbatical, but she had to wait because of drama: their daughter, Curtina,

was having some sort of pre-teen phase and Curtis’s sister, Trina, was sick.

In the meantime, Charlotte coped by drinking vodka.

Twelve-year-old Curtina’s parents were always treating her like an infant.

They never let her leave the house whenever she wanted and she had strict bedtimes, even on weekends. As for hanging out with her friends, forget it.

Her parents even took her phone away! It was so unfair and it would be much worse, had Curtina not caught her mother drinking.

Blackmail was a good thing. Secrets were even better.

It had been decades since Curtis had seen his sister, Trina. At eighteen, he’d left home, escaping an abusive father, abandoning Trina and their mother with an angry, bullying alcoholic. Leaving had been self-preservation; Curtis had been planning an escape for years by then and he hadn’t seen Trina but a handful of times since.

Now her husband had called to tell Curtis that she was dying.

That brought back every bad memory Curtis had.

Was it too late to replace them with answers and better kinds of memories?

All good things, as they say, must come to

an end and, alas, that includes characters and book series. In “Better Late Than Never,” it also goes for the Curtis Black family.

But fear not – author Kimberla Lawson Roby doesn’t send readers away with a whimper in this book. No, this novel goes out with a gentle bang that includes the scandals you need but not the profanity you don’t. That gives this novel – the entire series, in fact – a curious soap-opera feel, but churchy: everybody in the Curtis Black series has some sort of mess attached to their lives at some point or another and it’s oh-no delicious but God forgives and so, eventually, does everybody else.

If you’re not familiar

with Curtis Black, don’t start here; go back to Book One and dive in. You’ll be happier that way. If you’re a fan, though, “Better Late Than Never” is the end of the line, and how could you miss your chance?
