here are people who function on the premise that they are entitled to have what they want, regardless of how it may affect the wellbeing of others.

They will step over you, around you and even on you to get what they want. They will call you by every name, other than a child of God to inflate their ego, brand their fame and promote their obvious dysfunction.

Self-confidence is needed to survive in a world where the wind can knock you off your feet at any given moment. We learn from

our experiences to expect the unexpected.

Obstacles and oppositions, yes haters too, are threats to the best of your intentions. Confidences you shared are betrayed, words you say are misconstrued and twisted. More than often, we have all had to call on self-confidence to keep on keeping on.

However, over inflated self-confidence is hurtful and abusive.

Is it too naive to think publicly displayed disrespect and generalization of the character of a group of people is mean and disruptive and even unnecessary

to get a point across?

Common sense ought to say wicked words will come back and bite you in the butt. Shame ought to say you have gone too far with accusations that flow like volcanic lava across the airwaves and worldwide web.

Who do you think you are, is a personal question. How you answer the question and how you live it out just might be detrimental to your wellbeing.

I thank God for Margaret Banks, my granny. Her love and words of wisdom rest on my heart. “Chile, be clear about what you say and be careful about what

you think about yourself. God don’t like ugly and he don’t care much for cute”. None of us can claim any fame to being perfect, but we should attempt to be respectful, or at least have the facts straight. My granny’s faith kept her soul soaring for 101 years and her words speak truth to this day.

This nation is in the throes of profound political, civil and personal ugliness and it is not cute. The general public is a captured audience consuming nonstop commentary with major emphasis too often placed on sensationalism from ego maniacs

and devious pundits via devices that have become body appendages. Too many doors are open to hatefulness.

Evil saturations of fear and terror fill minds persistently and consistently. It is no wonder, depression is rising.

People have always voiced disapproval of the law and there are more than enough radical injustices to validate every ounce of their anger and criticism. We are all seeking what is just and fair, but today we are witness to what happens when someone or a multitude of people believe they are above the law of the land and God’s spiritual laws that

govern the universe.

Everything under the sun has a purpose and a plan. However, we can no longer shake our heads and say it is what it is. If we want to be better, we have to do better and that begins with self. In the meantime, while we wonder what the end will be, let us commit to a good cause with good conscience for the good of us all. Take your soul to the poll.

Harlem community gardeners invite the public on Saturday, August 27, 2016, to tour Harlem’s amazing grassroots green oases.

Starting at 9am with a sumptuous breakfast at the J.D. Wilson Garden on 122nd Street, and ending at 5pm with a traditional Harlem cookout at the William A. Harris Garden, 153rd Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, the tour will take in over 15 of Harlem’s incredible green gems. In addition to buses provided by Greenthumb and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Philipp Rassman, a gardener at the Morris-Jumel Garden on West 162nd Street, will head up the “Bicycle Brigade” of

tourists. Eren Gibson of the Truce/McCracken Garden on 118th & St Nicholas will lead the brave-soled walkers.

Some gardens began over 30 years ago, transforming sun-parched and rubble-strewn abandoned city lots into lush production. Newer gardens abound where neighbors have recently come together to reclaim wasting lots.

The gardens offer far more than plots of vegetables. They are community centers alive with educational programs, art, health and wellness, crafts, theatre and story-telling, can-

Community gardeners have long been visionaries when it comes to community development and a healthy urban landscape. Much more than the healthy, oxygen-promoting ecosystems we all need to survive, community gardens are oases of healing. They give individuals a sense of purpose, dignity and belonging. They strengthen communities. Community gardens are magical places, which soften our harsh urban landscape and decrease its toxic carbon footprint. As Haja

History of the Black Press and New York Black Media

n 1827 a group of prominent free African American citizens from states along the Eastern seaboard met in the New York City home of Bostin Crummell to discuss means to communicate their views on the various social, political and economic issues that commonly confronted them and their respective communities. Although Black citizens utilized the church and social and fraternal organizations as a means of collective expression and dialogue, the usual channels of public media — particularly newspapers — were denied to them. Exacerbating the problem was the fact that elements of the established press routinely denigrated African Americans in print, even to the extent of questioning both the integrity and morality of the entire race.

The most significant outcome of the meeting at Mr. Crummell’s house in the winter of 1827 was the decision to begin pub-

lication of the first newspaper produced by Black Americans, Freedom’s Journal. Two attendees at the meeting, Rev. Samuel Cornish and John B. Russwurm, became the paper’s editors. Although well intentioned white citizens sometimes defended the honor of African Americans in public forums, the editors of Freedom’s Journal proclaimed in the first issue, “Too long have others spoken for us, we wish to plead our own cause.”

In 1941, under the urging of John Sengstacke of the Chicago Defender, a meeting of leading Black publishers from across the nation were called in Chicago. Sengstacke said the meeting was designed for “harmonizing our energies in a common purpose for the benefit of Negro journalism.” At least one representative from 22 publications attended the meeting and the group decided to form the National Negro Publishers Association. In 1956, the trade association of the nation’s

Black Press was renamed the National Newspaper Publishers Association.

As advertisers began to recognize the value of the Black Press readership, Black newspapers began to regionalize in order to collectively address regional issues and advertisers who operated in their region and not necessarily on a national basis. Most prominent among these regional publisher groups was the West Coast Black Publishers Association (WCBPA) founded in 1974.

In 1990, under the leadership of Walter Smith, publisher of the New York Beacon, the Northeast Publishers Association (NEPA) was formed to include Black owned newspapers from Philadelphia PA to Providence Rhode Island. The group consisted of 17 member newspapers.

In 2014, under the leadership of Patricia Stevens, publisher of Harlem Community News, the New York Black Media

was formed for many of the same reasons as were the regional newspaper groups but with a focus on local issues and state business.

NYBM membership includes: Carib News – Publisher Carl Rodney, Christian Times – Publisher Dennis Dillon, Harlem Community News – Publisher Pat Stevenson, New York Beacon – Publisher Walter Smith. Our Time Press – Publisher David Greaves, and Westchester County Press – Publisher Sandra Blackwell.

NYBM, in addition to its basic news coverage is providing blanket coverage to New York City’s premiere yearly Black festival, HARLEM WEEK and its sponsors and supporters.

Thus, into the communication age of the new millennium NNPA, WCBPA, NEPA, and NYBM continue to fulfill the declaration set forth by Cornish and Russwurm: “We wish to plead our own cause.”

ere are some more common mistakes that have plagued prospective first time buyers. These mistakes have thwarted their efforts to complete the home buying process. Making a mistake during the home buying process can set back your projected purchase date by several months, costing you valuable time and money.

Jill Scott pleases sold-out crowd at Apollo Theater debut

eo-soul singer, songwriter, poet, author, and actress Jill Scott took the New York City area by storm with three shows in a five-day stretch the second week of August. Her first show was her sold-out Apollo Theater debut last Tuesday, followed by another sold-out show on Thursday at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, New Jersey, followed by her area finale at the Ford Amphitheater in Coney Island.

The Apollo Theater was electric with the anticipation of the

three-time Grammy winner taking the stage, and she didn’t disappoint, serving as singer, bandleader, comedian, therapist and more during performance.

The Philadelphia native performed hits from her 2000 debut album “Who Is Jill Scott?

Words and Sounds Vol. 1” including “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat),” “A Long Walk,” and “The Way” as well as hits from her second album “Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2” including “Golden,” Cross My Mind” and “Whatever.”

Perhaps the greatest thing that makes a Jill Scott experience so unique is her interaction with the crowd. A true artist, Scott ad-libs a lot and has honest interactions with the audience. One of the most memorable parts of her performance was a call and response she had with the audience on self-esteem.

“I’m gonna love myself, just a little bit more than the day before,” Scott said, and then had the crowd repeat over and over. Six days later, I still find myself singing those words that she left us with.

Though I didn’t attend the other two area shows, I seriously considered buying a cheap ticket to the show out in Coney Island, first to see the brand-new area, and also to experience the beautiful voice and vibes of Jill Scott. In her first album, she asked “Who Is Jill Scott?”

Afraid You’ll Be Forced to Work In Retirement? That May Not Be So Bad

M

any older Americans who once dreamed of lounging around the house in retirement instead are waking up each morning to get ready for work.

A recent Pew Research Center study showed that the percentage of Americans 65 and over still employed is on the rise, having reached 18.8 percent as of May, up from 12.8 percent in 2000.

Depending on an individual’s situation, though, working past traditional retirement age may not be such a terrible thing.

“Some people say they keep working because they can’t afford to retire,” says

John Eikenberry, president of Eikenberry Retirement Planning (www.EikenberryRetirement.com), a wealth-management firm.

“Some people don’t want to retire because they love what they do.”

Eikenberry, 68, falls in the latter group. His keepat-it attitude worked in his favor after a surgery in February.

“One of the people in the medical field told me that because I’m active that has helped me to rehab quickly,” Eikenberry says. “They said if I was retired, typically it takes longer to rehab.”

Some advantages of working in retirement in-

clude: • Relief from financial stress. One of the biggest worries retirees have is running out of money, Eikenberry says. With people living longer, that’s a legitimate concern. Even just a part-time job that brings in a little extra cash can help alleviate some of the stress.

He has clients who work just a few days a week and that works well for them, he says.

• Physical fitness. It’s no secret that, as people age, they tend to suffer more problems with their bodies, such as joint pains. Many jobs can keep them active and moving, making for better health.

“Work gives us the ability to keep our minds active.”

Anyone considering working in retirement does need to be aware of the financial implications with Social Security, Eikenberry says.

If you wait until your full retirement age to draw Social Security – 66 to 67 for most people these days – you can earn as much as

you like.

But if you claim Social Security early – which you can do starting at age 62 – earnings are limited to $15,720 annually. For every $2 you make over that amount, $1 is deducted from your Social Security.

That changes beginning with the year in which you reach full retirement age. At that point, $1 is deducted for every $3 earned above a different limit. In 2016, that limit is $41,880. But the only earnings counted are those before the month in which you reach full retirement age, according to the Social Security website.

Eikenberry is happy with

his decision to remain on the job beyond retirement age and many of the clients he provides financial advice to find it rewarding, too.

“For me, there’s nothing negative about working in retirement at all,” he says.

SHIRLEY CHISHOLM AND THE FIGHT FOR EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL WOMEN

ith a woman heading the ticket of the Democratic Party, it may be challenging for us to remember that women have had the right to vote for less than a century (and Black folks less that). But the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote was ratified on August 18, 1920, just 96 years ago. At Congresswoman Bella Abzug’s (D-N.Y.) insistence Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971. The first part of the joint resolution of Congress reads, “Whereas the women of the United States have been treated as second class citizens and have not been entitled to the full rights and privileges, public or private, legal or intentional, which are available to male citizens.” Reading the words reminds me how far women have come, how far we still have to go, and how little the status of women of color is included when we speak of the status of women.

How far have we come?

Few would have predicted that an African American would win an election and effectively lead the United States for eight years, few would have predicted that a women would have more than a fighting chance

of winning the United States presidency. And yet the very campaign that signals progress is also one that illustrates how much more work needs to be done before women’s equality is attained. Too much of the rhetoric around Secretary Clinton’s candidacy is downright sexist. She should be judged by her positions and there should be absolutely no talk about her looks, hairstyle, attire, or tone of voice. No man could stand the kind of scrutiny that she has had to endure. No man has ever been subject to such scrutiny.

The continuing saga of sexual harassment at Fox News is another example of the distance we must travel to reach women’s equality. The company’s former CEO, Roger Ailes, is accused of multiple counts of sexual harassment, and this is a clear case of where there’s smoke, there’s fire. One wonders how many other companies have similarly hostile work environments and how often women, simply attempting to earn a living, are placed in the position of having to manage unflattering comments, downright harassment, coerced sex, and even rape. There are documented cases of women being raped in the military then being discharged because they can’t

work with their rapists. And let’s not get started on some of what happens on some campuses. That a Palo Alto judge sentenced a Stanford student to a scant six months in a rape witnessed by another student is amazing. That his father actually decried the sentence as too high a price to pay for a few minutes of “action” speaks to how much work we have to do to reach women’s equality.

And ain’t I a woman. What about Black women’s equality?

It chagrins me that Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s (D-N.Y.) historic run for president has been all but ignored in much of the media frenzy about candidate Hillary Clinton.

However, it does not surprise me given the many ways African American women’s contributions are sidelined, marginalized or simply ignored. African American women earn less their White counterparts do, but head more households and have more economic responsibility.

African American women are far less likely than their White counterparts to be found in the “C” suite in corporate leadership, and far more likely to be further down the ladder in every aspect of life in our nation. While people say they saw the glass ceiling shatter with Hillary Clinton’s nomination, others saw the millions standing at the sticky floor with few opportunities to climb up to that glass ceiling. Those standing on the sticky floor are disproportionately women of color, especially those who earn low wages and have fewer opportunities than others. Maybe Hillary Clinton will bridge the gap

when she pursues a progressive economic agenda that includes fair and equal pay, affordable childcare, and other benefits for working women.

There has been significant progress for women since the 19th Amendment was passed, significant progress since Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. Yet women still don’t have even a

third (not to mention half) of the seats in the House of Representatives or the Senate, nor in any state legislature in the nation. Women aren’t even 10 percent of our nation’s corporate leaders. Women still face hostile work environments.

While commemorating the progress that has been made in nearly a century, we must also ask whether it will take anoth-

er century to reach real equality for all women.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, NYPD Assistant Chief Kim Royster, John Schreiber of NJPAC and Verizon FIOS were feted Aug. 11th at the 3rd annual Basil A. Paterson Business Awards Luncheon at Columbia University.

It’s All in Your Head

aoist author and Master Wu Wei gives a wonderful explanation on how all that we see is in our head.

According to Master Wei “everything we see is inside of our heads. Inside of each eye are over one hundred million rods and cones. These rods and cones are stimulated by the rays of light that enter your eye which, in turn, create impulses that travel along the optic nerve system to the brain.”

The brain receives those impulses and forms a picture. That picture is inside your head, formed

by your brain, within your brain. Master Wei writes “We never actually see an object, the only thing we see are light rays being radiated by, or reflected from objects. The view you have of the world is simply a picture that appears to be outside, but actually is inside your head”.

From a very early age we have been socially programed to see things in a certain way. Consider this; if what we see is in our heads and if we have been taught to see things in a certain way, there may be more to life than what we see and believe to be true about ourselves and others. Two individuals

will see a glass of water but social programing will make one see it as half full and the other see it as half empty.

When discussing this concept at the Ki Center or in workshops, I often use the Magic Eye 3D computer-generated illusions as an example of how the brain only sees what it has been programed to see.

When you look at a Magic Eye 3D picture for the first time you will only see an arrangement of color patterns. If you are never told that there is more than what you see. you will never experience the magic.

If you keep looking

at the picture until your brain allows, you will see a 3D image appear.

In time you will see that hidden 3D image appear. When that happens for the first time, you realize there is more than meets the eye. I find this a wonderful metaphor to use in addressing the concept of enlightenment. A deprogramed mind will see more possibilities than a programed mind.

The first step in deprogramming is to accept the fact that most of your core thoughts about yourself and others are programed illusions of your reality.

ine, mine, mine.

When you were two years old, that was your favorite word. Everything you saw belonged to you, somehow, one way or another. If you liked it, it was yours. If you didn’t like it, it was yours, too. And as you’ll see in the new novel “You’re the One I Want” by Shane Allison, some people never outgrow that.

Don’t think Bree didn’t notice that Deanthony was at Kashawn’s birthday party.

Some might think it natural that he would be – they were twins, after all, so Kashawn’s birthday was Deanthony’s birthday, too.

But Bree didn’t think Deanthony would dare show his face after what happened. She surely hoped he wouldn’t tell anyone that they’d slept together, because Bree was married to Kashawn.

Why did she do it?

Bree didn’t have an answer to that. She loved Kashawn, of that she was certain. He was a doctor, respected in their community, and he was smoking-hot. He loved her, too, though he knew she had a shady past as a dancer at a local gentleman’s club. He treated Bree like a queen, so there was no reason for her to sleep with Kashawn’s brother, except

that she couldn’t resist the way Deanthony looked at her.

Deanthony had always been a little jealous of Kashawn. Truth was, he was in love with Bree and he couldn’t understand why she’d ever choose Kashawn over him. He was better for her in so many ways, and he knew she’d be happier with him – just as long as she never found out what he did after he left Florida to follow his dreams.

Bree’s BFF, Tangela, had a plan.

That was nothing new; Tangela was always planning on Bree’s behalf because it was all about

Bree, wasn’t it? She was always making Bree’s life better, making Bree’s marriage better, getting Bree what she thought she needed, helping Bree make Kashawn happy. All that, it was something Tangela hated, just as she hated Bree because Tangela really just wanted Kashawn for herself. And here’s the thing: much like Bree, Tangela always got what she wanted; plus, she really wasn’t Bree’s best friend.

Tangela wasn’t anybody’s friend…

Sounds complicated?

Yes, it is, somewhat. Confusing conversation between characters doesn’t help any, either - but then again, scintillating dialogue isn’t why you’d pick

this book up.

Filled with explicit sex, profanity, violence, lies, and cheating, “You’re the One I Want” is an over-the-top story that you might not decide to read in public because it’s steamy. I mean, wipe-the-fog-fromyour-glasses steamy.

Everything else is secondary in this book – the characters don’t matter, the locale doesn’t matter, even author Shane Allison’s supporting cast is inconsequential here. The steam is at the stern, sex is what runs this book, and that’s all you need to know.

I say that so you’re clear that this novel is predictable and nasty, but read-

able. It’s not horrid, but it is hot. And if you need that kind of escape, grab “You’re the One I Want” and make it yours.

Wynn Optics Success With the Harlem Community Support

Harlem native’s eye care business is thriving thanks to the help of the community it serves.

Wynn Optics started 10 years ago with just two employees in a storefront on Lenox Avenue. Today, the business has grown to two locations uptown and boast more than a dozen employees.

It’s something the business’ owner, DeJuan Wynn, said was all down to him identifying a need in the neighborhood. It’s something he said he wouldn’t take for granted. “The only way we were able to do it was by having a community vision in mind,” Wynn told the Harlem News. “People appreciate the services we are providing.”

enator Jeff Klein ( D - B r o n x / We s t chester) hosted The Bronx Wanderers as they performed their last Bronx show on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Park. Hundreds of Bronx residents enjoyed an amazing concert and said farewell to The Bronx Wanderers before their residency kicks off at Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in the fall.

“We have been happy to enjoy The Bronx Wanderers for years, and as we send them off, I was thrilled to host one last performance. Bronx fam-

ilies came together to enjoy this farewell show, as part of my Summertime Symphonies series, and they did not disappoint.

While we’ll miss them right here in The Bronx, I want to wish everyone’s favorite father-sons group a great stay in Las Vegas,” said Senator Jeff Klein.

The home-grown group, a father with his two sons, has long rocked audiences with their blend of handpicked oldies from the 50’s through the 70’s. Over the past 14 years, The Bronx Wanderers have performed in over 35 states.

“For me, it all started

here, and as we are getting prepared to leave for an extended stay in Las Vegas, I can never thank Senator Jeff Klein and his entire staff for allowing us one final show for all of our friends from The Bronx and Westchester.

We are thrilled to be coming home,” said Vinny Adinolfi, The Bronx Wanderers.

The State of the Caribbean Diaspora Discussion at Medgar Evers College

n Thursday, September 8th at 5:30 p.m, Medgar Evers College, in a partnership with the U.S. State Department, is hosting what is certain to be a provocative and insightful discussion on the state of the Caribbean Diaspora.

“Caribbean-USA Diaspora Priorities & Convergence” will host a panel moderated

by Tony Best, a senior editor at NY Carib News. The panelists are Dr. Sheilah Paul, an Associate Dean at Medgar Evers; Juan Gonzalez, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Central America and the Caribbean, U.S. Department of State; and Lowell Hawthorne, President and CEO,

Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill. The event is open to the public.

Given the large Caribbean presence at Medgar Evers College and throughout New York City, this examination of the social and political challenges of Caribbean countries is both relevant and timely in this election year. The discussion will be followed by a Question and Answer session with the audience.

Jazzmobile block party is the grand finale to the museum’s Summer with Satchmo season.
