Finding the Balance – Conversation with Congressman Adriano Espaillat By: William A Rogers

had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Adriano Espaillat in his Harlem office a few days ago. This was our first meeting since his election as the representative of New York’s Thirteenth Congressional District.

Espaillat will be the first Dominican-American immigrant to serve in the United States congress. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1954, he came to the United States with his family when he was nine years old.

Congressman Espaillat will be the third congressional representative

to serve in the 13th Congressional District; a district developed in the 1940’s to provide political opportunities for African-Americans.

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was the first to serve and Charles B. Rangel was the second.

I asked the congressman what he felt would be his greatest challenges serving in a district historically recognized as a powerbase for African-American political leaders. “Finding a balance and building bridges,” was his answer.

There must be a balance between the big box stores and

the small mom and pop stores. “Finding a balance between affordable housing and high rise condos and Co-ops in Harlem and Washington Heights will be a challenge” states the congressman. He also feels it is important to find a balance with law enforcement and small businesses in the areas that his district covers in the South Bronx that still battle tough drug problems.

The Congressman who was a strong supporter of legislation focused on affordable housing, economic and job development and better educational opportunities while serving in the New York State Senate and Assem-

bly, Espaillat vows to continue that support from the federal level. Congressman Espaillat currently serves on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the House Select Committee on Small Business. He also serves as a member of the influential U.S. Foreign Affairs Committee.

The congressman also feels the responsibility for building a strong bridge between the African-American and Dominican communities. He invited the HARLEM WEEK Festival to be a part of the Dominican Day parade that was held on August 13.

also playing a role in creating a Dominican Village for HARLEM DAY Sunday August 20 on 135th Street between Malcolm X Blvd. and 5th Avenue.

Congressman Espaillat explained how he was always fascinated with the history of Harlem.

On June 29 2017 the congressman joined a number of distinguished representatives who submitted resolution H. RES. 425 to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform supporting the protection of the name “Harlem.”

heritage. While serving as Urban Policy Advisor to then City College president Yolanda Moses, I worked with Dr. Silvio Torres Saillant, Ana Garcia-Reyes and other educators in the development of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at City College.

During that time I learned about the tremendous influence Africans played in the development of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba. The island became divided between two sovereign nations, Spain (Dominican Republic) and France (Haiti) but as friend, former City College student and now New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez always states “We are all of African descent”.

I have no doubt that if Congressmen Espaillt finds the balance in his efforts to support affordable housing, small business growth and job development along with improving educational opportunities in the 13th Congressional District, he will get the support of his new constituents.

Senator Marisol Alcántara announces Washington Heights’ First Drop-In Center for Homeless LGBTQ+ Youth

S

tate Senator Marisol Alcántara (D-Manhattan), together with the Dominican Women’s Development Center, announced $100,000 in state funding today for Washington Heights’ first drop-in center for homeless LGBTQ youth at Holyrood Episcopal Church, which will provide space for the center.

This center, the first of its kind in Washington Heights, will serve the need of homeless LGBTQ youth for a safe place to shower, receive services such as HIV testing, use computers, and take classes. Since many of these youth have been kicked out by their parents, this center will provide a space for them to get the services they need to stay in school and find employment.

The Dominican Women’s Development Center has more than two decades of experience providing social services in the Washington Heights community, including prenatal health programming, English as a second language instruction, legal services, and childcare.

With this expanded funding, the center will be able to enhance its current programming as well as provide new services for homeless youth.

ne current home-buying trend that stands out is the number of young adults who are now preparing to purchase their first home. Many of these young adults have realized renting is no longer an option and are looking at homeownership as the only viable solution. They understand the time to buy is now and they are going forward to make homeownership a reality.

The Homebuyer Education Workshop is the first step when starting the process. I find the people attending the workshop are eager to understand the process. They are willing to make the necessary sacrifices. A big part of being able to successfully complete the home-buying process is having the right mental attitude.

Those who have been successful all have the following attributes.

(1) A strong desire to become a homeowner. You must be willing to make whatever sacrifices in your lifestyle to help you meet this goal. That means making tough decisions about how you are spending your money. You will need a great deal of savings and reasonably good credit.

(2) The discipline to force yourself to aggressively save more money each month. Explore alternatives to reduce your spending. This level of discipline will drive you through the process.

(3) The determination to complete the process. If homeownership is your goal, stick to it and let no one or nothing pre-

vent you from achieving your goal. Many people attending the workshop possess this type of determination. They just need some guidance in understanding the steps involved and counseling regarding specific questions related to the process; and (4) Dedicate yourself to purchasing a home. It will not happen overnight but you can do it. Push past your fears and plunge right into the process. Stay on course with the proper attitude and it will happen over time. Be prepared, stay focused and achieve your goal of homeownership.

Is Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor hype or a real fight?

W

hen Floyd Mayweather, Jr defeated Andre Berto in September 2015, he said it would be his last time in the ring. I didn’t believe it, and many of you didn’t believe it either. But as time passed, and six months led to a year and beyond, the reality set in that Mayweather had indeed hung up the boxing gloves for good. Then the unthinkable happened.

I always thought that if Mayweather did step into the ring again, it would be a rematch versus Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao, or Mexican star Canelo Alvarez, both pay per view stars in their own right. But I didn’t see a fight between Mayweather and UFC champion Conor McGregor coming.

But here we are indeed. I watched all four stops of the MayMac World Tour, on four consecutive days in four different cities in three countries and the fan response was tremendous. The demand for the fight is worldwide, with fans in Toronto and London flocking to stops of the press tour.

Mayweather talked about the demand for the fight being the primary reason he took the fight. “I knew that this was going to be a huge event,” he said. “We had to give the people what they wanted to see and if we break the PPV

record, all I’ll be doing is breaking my own record,” Mayweather said, referring to his record-breaking May 2015 bout against Pacquiao.

Though this will be his first professional boxing match, McGregor pointed out reasons he will be victorious. “I have a very high fight IQ. I understand when to go and when not to. Only me and the opponent can see these details. I’m very confident whether it’s in a ring

or an octagon,” McGregor said.

McGregor continued discussing his ability to win, even discussing his scouting of Mayweather, saying “I know every shot he throws. I know what to expect. He fights the same every time. So we’re preparing. But he knows nothing about me. He has no idea how I’m going approach him.”

Ultimately, to think that a non-boxer has a legitimate

chance to defeat a boxer who is 49-0 is very unlikely. In my opinion, to give McGregor anything more than a 1% chance of defeating Mayweather is moronic. But if you factor in boxing fans, MMA fans, the notion of a “Great White Hope” defeating an African American boxer, and the ability of the two fighters to sell the event, I expect both to walk away with nine-figure checks, whether the fight itself

is competitive or not.

HARLEM WEEK - 2017 NYC Economic Development Day

ARLEM WEEK’S NYC Economic Development Day was held at Columbia University on August 10th. The day included a business and health expo and awards luncheon.

La-Verna Fountain, VP Strategic Communication and Construction Business Initiatives for Columbia University Facilities received the “2017 Outstanding Community Service” Award. Other Awards were given to four people who began their lives as Harlem residents: Tim Zagat, Michele Rodney, Esq. and John Catsimatidis; H. Carl McCall received the Paterson Award.

I attended a couple of the business panels.

Panel A was titled “MWBE & Small Business Initiatives,” and La-Verna Fountain, introduced each panel member. Their discussions are summarized as follows: Michael Sutton – President of Infrastructure Engi-

neering, Inc., stated you need to know where you are to figure out where you want to go; you need a strategic plan for all aspects of your business.

Implementation is important, but you also must monitor your plan by defining the metrics that will help you measure are you making progress.

Tanya Pope – Assistant VP Diversity and Program Integration for Columbia University Facilities and her team launched a program this year with select existing vendors that has three tracks depending on where they are in their business cycle: core coaching, coaching with emphasis and opportunity for growth and capacity building.

Jeanique Druses – VP, Relationship Manager in Global Philanthropy for JPMorgan Chase and she helps small businesses grow and scale by establishing a more level playing field. We invest money in community based non-profit organizations such as Start Small Think Big to

help low income MWBEs get the start they need.

Dr. Gerrard P. Bushell, President and CEO of Dormitory Authority of State of New York (“DASNY”) closed stating, “Bottom line we need to lower the hurdles because there are barriers that work against us as people of color.

I

n 1974 the Uptown Chamber of Commerce (UCC) produced an event in partnership with community, cultural, business, religious, educational, civic and political leaders; the name of the event was Harlem Day and the theme for the first Harlem Day was “The Beginning of the Second Harlem Renaissance”. It will always be my personal opinion that the beginning of the second Harlem Renaissance started on that hot summer August Sunday in 1974.

New York City was on the verge of going bankrupt; President Gerald Ford told New York business and political leaders to drop dead, when they asked for assistance from the federal government. The Honorable Percy E. Sutton was the borough president of Manhattan and a Harlem resident. Mr. Sutton believed

that the tourism industry would be an important tool for the realization of Manhattan and his beloved Harlem.

Hope R. Stevens was first person of color to serve as president of the Uptown Chamber of Commerce one of the oldest business/civic organizations in New York City formally known as the Harlem Board of Commerce. Mr. Stevens at the request of Mr. Sutton allowed the Uptown Chamber to become an organizing foundation in Harlem’s revitalization strategy.

The success of the first Harlem Day received a tremendous amount of local, national and international media attention. I am sure that no one at that time would have imagined that Harlem Day would turn into a week, which is now over a month and would last for forty three years.

I still find it difficult to believe

that every August for the past 43 years I have worked with many of the same to make this economic development/cultural festival one of the largest of its kind in the United States.

Some people seem to think that Harlem’s current revitalization happen overnight, but it has taken many years of sacrifice, commitment and hard work by a number of devoted individuals and organizations to bring Harlem to where it is now. There is still a great deal of work to be done in the economic development phase of this second Harlem Renaissance, and Mr. Sutton’s vision of tourism playing an important role in Harlem’s revitalization is still valid and the major reason I agreed to serve as president of the Harlem Tourism Board.

he Conscience Mind and the Sub-Conscience Mind can be considered as two components that form the engine that allows the body to run. Just as the engine in a car, allows the car to run. Healing our emotional wounds is not an easy task. In an attempt to begin eliminating disease, we have to start creating a healthier internal environment by expressing our emotions and resolving our internal pains.

Our Third Chakra serves our sense of individuality, confidence and personal power. The basic issues of this chakra surround energetic activity, authority, will and self-esteem. ll right, all together now . . . bend and stretch and bend and stretch! That was the mantra when my girlfriends and I decided to start exercising.

You see, we discovered that our sedentary habits had literally grown on us! A call to action was in order for us to change our ways. Instead of hiring a trainer, we decided to put together our own exercise program. The plan is to develop toned muscles and lose the lumps. We agreed to work out for an hour three times a week to achieve our individual fitness goals. We

have also committed to improving our eating habits by including more fresh fruits and vegetables and to seriously cut back on our intake of comfort foods, general junk and sweets.

Have you thought about working out and can’t seem to get started? There are several

options available to you. One great way to get in shape, and it’s inexpensive, is to walk, through the park, up the block, anywhere; just get moving. Why not check the television listings for exercise programs, you will find everything from simple stretching to aerobics and yoga. Want to be part of a group? Seek out a convenient class at the Y and if you have a gym membership — use it. How about organizing a group of your friends?

Our first self-training session was a combination of nervous chuckles and “time outs” to catch our col-

lective breath. It seems that we overestimated our fitness level.

Lessons learned: (1) Heed the old warning, “Before beginning any exercise program, consult with your doctor.”

(I was so sore after the first workout that I wanted a painkiller!)

(2) Don’t laugh while exercising; you’ll need all the air you can get.

(3) Before you can tighten those stomach muscles you must first develop them. (4) Never underestimate the power of a three pound weight. (5) There is comfort in steamed broccoli.

We look forward to getting in shape and intend to continue our

support of one another, because we are determined to make this effort a part of our lifestyle. We are choosing to live in healthier bodies. It is not going to be easy, but have determined that we are worth it.

Develop a Wellness State of Mind-Part 2

n Part 1, I discussed the importance of viewing wellness as a journey with the first step being gratitude and finding ways we can be thankful for what we already have.

This week I’m speaking with Addo Martin Luther King (yes, that’s his real name), body building champion from Ghana, celebrity fitness trainer and Founder of Southbridge Fitness Center in lower manhattan.

“Addo”, as many of his clients refer to

him is known for his powerful workouts as much as he is for his powerful personality, always greeting visitors and clients (many of them seniors) with a big smile and a huge hug courtesy of his muscular arms. In part 2 this week, I ask Addo about the keys for developing a wellness state of mind.

What does a wellness state of mind mean to you?

“It’s when I’m able to connect to the Higher Power. Because there so many powers and forces in the universe. There is a power connected to every living soul, whether

we know it or believe it. I call that power my God, but depending on the religion, someone may call it something else but this power connects us all and it is very important we are able to find that source for ourselves. Whether you are a bus driver, in the corporate world, a doctor, nurse, fitness expert, entrepreneur, it doesn’t matter… and, once you connect to that power, it helps you to believe in yourself—and that is the true power.”
