Columbia Highlights Social Justice History of Manhattanville Marisol Rodríguez

I

n the mid 1800s half of all children in New York died before reaching age five.

The primary reason for this tragedy: toxic milk.

This was a time before refrigeration, cows needed to be close to communities in order for milk to be consumed before it spoiled. As New York grew and farms relocated outside of the city, those who could not afford to pay for the higher priced imported milk were forced to get it from the only city cows living in downtown Manhattan, near distilleries pumping bowling swill or waste into their sheds. Cows ate this waste and produced a blue-tinted milk with lumps of dirt and bacteria linked to tuberculosis, cholera, and digestive diseases.

in Manhattanville played a crucial role in addressing this public health crisis, which is explored in Manhattanville: A New York Nexus; Sheffield Farms, the Milk Industry, and the Public Good, a permanent exhibit at one of Columbia’s facilities at 560 West 133rd Street.

The Columbia University exhibit opened its doors in April 2016 and was designed

by Columbia staff Leonard Cox, Senior Creative Officer,

and History Professor Thai Jones. The purpose of this exhibit is to preserve the history of the neighborhood in which the university has established its new campus.

The exhibit includes a timeline documenting the Lenape tribe as the indigenous inhabitants of the area and the establishing of Manhattanville in the late 1800s, as well as a comprehensive documentary and 2017 Telly award winner for “best short documentary.”

On the exhibit’s website you can learn historic details such as community resistance against unfair milk conditions: “Women and mothers in Harlem took their concerns over high prices directly to the streets on multiple occasions, picketing Sheffield Farms and other companies to demand affordable milk for their children.”

Columbia University played a role in bringing awareness to the high mortal-

ity rates in Upper Manhattan due to the toxic milk through their investigation for the city department of Health and Hygiene. At the time (mid 1800s) less mothers were breastfeeding, making cow’s milk a primary source of nutrition for infants and children.

Sheffield Farms became a premiere milk company in Manhattaville, aiding in the reduction of milk-borne illnesses by cleaning milk at their processing plant, which is now Prentis Hall, home to Columbia’s School of the Arts.

en in Harlem were extremely influential in the milk reform movement as well. A notable organization was the International Pure Milk League dedicated to keeping community kids healthy. Erik K. Washington, Columbia University Community, explains in the exhibit’s documentary, “A lot of the activities of the International Pure Milk League focused on a relatively working class and poor population, taking [children] to outings in Van Cortlandt Park, introducing them to nature, keeping them active.”

Community Newspapers Have Been Complacent For Too Long

e thought everybody knew how important a free press was to our world and that all this talk about us being the enemy of the people would be dismissed for the silliness that it is.

But the reckless attacks have continued, instigated and encouraged by our president.

When the leader of the free world works to erode the public’s trust in the media, the potential for damage is enormous, both here and abroad. We once set an example of free and open government for the world to follow. Now those who seek to suppress the free flow of information are doing so with impunity.

The time has come for us to stand up to the bullying. The role journalism plays in our free society is too

crucial to allow this degradation to continue.

We aren’t the enemy of the people. We are the people. We aren’t fake news. We are your news and we struggle night and day to get the facts right.

On bitter cold January nights, we’re the people’s eyes and ears at town, village and school board meetings. We tell the stories of our communities, from the fun of a county fair to the despair a family faces when a loved one is killed.

We are always by your side. We shop the same stores, attend the same churches and hike the same trails.

We struggle with daycare and worry about paying for retirement.

In our work as journalists, our first loyalty is to you. Our work is guided by a set of

principles that demand objectivity, independence, open-mindedness and the pursuit of the truth. We make mistakes, we know.

There’s nothing we hate more than errors but we acknowledge them, correct them and learn from them.

Our work is a labor of love because we love our country and believe we are playing a vital role in our democracy. Self-governance demands that our citizens need to be well-informed and that’s what we’re here to do. We go beyond the government issued press release or briefing and ask tough questions. We hold people in power accountable for their actions. Some think we’re rude to question and challenge. We know it’s our obligation.

People have been criticizing the press for generations. We are not perfect. But we’re striving every day to be a better version of ourselves than we were the day before.

That’s why we welcome criticism. But unwarranted attacks that undermine your trust in us cannot stand. The problem has become so serious that newspapers across the nation are speaking out against these attacks in one voice today on their editorial pages.

As women’s rights pioneer and investigative journalist Ida B. Wells wrote in 1892: “The people must know before they can act and there is no educator to compare with the press.”

he fair market values for homes in Harlem are outrageous! But what is equally distressing are the number of costly mistakes many prospective firsttime home buyers are making which will prevent them from completing the closing process. Recently several mortgage loan officers have shared with me some horrific stories of mistakes people have made that have caused their mortgage application to be denied at the very end of the application process.

Remember until you have signed the closing documents and have received the keys to your property; you have not completed the process.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to the completion of the process: (1) do not open any

new credit accounts or make any additional large purchases until after you have closed on the purchase of your property. Every time you make a purchase your debt to income ratio (DTI) will be adversely impacted. If your DTI exceeds 43% you can be denied a mortgage.

(2) If possible do not change jobs or vocational careers until after you have closed on your home. Lenders want to see a minimum of 24 consecutive months of work history. If you have changed careers you will need 24 months in the new position before getting approval for your mortgage.

Lenders will verify your employment throughout the application process.

(3) Never, ever co-sign

for a friend or a relative before completing the mortgage process. By co-signing you are assuming the debt for this purchase and now you have placed your mortgage application in jeopardy of not being approved. Under normal circumstances, these mistakes would not be so detrimental except when attempting to obtain a mortgage.

They can be so devastating that you can miss completing purchase of your home. Do not lose sight of your goal that you have been working so hard to achieve.

Gregg Bishop, Commissioner of NYC Small Business Services outlined services his city agency provides in multiple locations throughout the five boroughs to assist small businesses as well as start-ups. “Helping women entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses is at the forefront right now for SBS,” stated the commissioner.

Pravina Raghavan, Executive Vice President at Empire State Development, which is the economic development arm of NYS told the audience members, “You are not alone, we are here to help you and when you seek help please seek reputable help.”

Points echoed by all three panelists and the moderator can be summarized as follows: 1. There are no road maps how to do business with the city, the state or the corporate arena.

2. Finding and retaining customers is built on the premise of building relationships and fulfilling your customers needs so that they keep coming back to you and will refer others to you as well.

3. Preparation is a big deal and you must be prepared for

the opportunities as they arise, you must understand what you can do, know your limitations and you must execute.

4. Per Alfred Edmond, Jr. your ability to build a business is based on the stability of your personal relationship; this point set everyone in the room on notice.

he Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (“GHCC”) held the HARLEM WEEK 2018’s New York City Economic Day at Columbia University’s Alfred Lerner Hall on Thursday, August 9th, 2018 as it does every year. The theme for this year’s business/development summit was “Business Preparedness: Opportunities are Knocking - What’s Going on in the Community; City, State and Corporate Arenas,” to enlighten attendees. The business summit was held in the lower level of Lerner Hall from 9:30 am until 11:30 am with a light, continental breakfast provided for attendees.

GHCC official Charles Powell from the Greater Harlem Housing Development Corporation served as the summit’s master of ceremony and called the meeting to order. Curtis Archer, President of the Harlem Community Development Corporation (“HCDC”) was introduced by Mr. Powell. Curtis welcomed the attendees and he explained that HCDC is a state agency that provides a multitude of services to Harlem-based businesses (including startups) and non-profit organizations. He also cited major land development projects that HCDC is presently a participant in.

Health and Tech Initiatives at HARLEM WEEK NYC EDD

he 38th annual New York City Economic Development Day (NYC EDD) was held on August 9 at Columbia University and featured a morning Health Summit Meeting and an afternoon Tech “Meet- Up” presented by Silicon Harlem.

The Health Summit provided analysis on the subjects of mental health, primary care, and opioids, a group of highly addictive pain-relieving drugs such as morphine.

lem, which offers recovery support to those struggling with substance abuse, brought attention to the increase of deaths due to overdose of the opioid fentanyl, which at a

very low dose is fatal. Many ingest fentanyl unknowingly because it is being added in the production of cocaine and heroin.

Dr. Sidney Hankerson,

Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, discussed the stigma around mental health in the Black community and ways to address this rising health crisis in the Harlem community.

He mentioned the role churches play in providing emotional support and highlighted the work of the H.O.P.E Center at the First Corinthian Baptist Church in providing mental health services. Additionally, the recently opened Columbia Wellness Center at the Manhattanville campus, offers free mental health training to the community.

Hankerson also brought up the critical need to support black men specifically, who “die sooner and get sicker,” offering creative ways mental health services can become integrated in everyday Harlem life, such as at barber shops.

One of the audience members asked about the effect of Trump’s election on mental health to Hankerson. “There’s certainly more anxiety especially when he got elected.

People are coping with stress with alcohol and substances,” he answered.

The Health Summit included an all-women panel of professionals in the health field. A topic that came up was the importance of patient and doctor relationships. Dr. Peggy Rose Elango, a self-identified black women, who has her own office on the Upper

She mentioned her shock that many of her patients have not seem doctors in years, telling her “I couldn’t find a doctor that I trusted.”

One of the panelist, Kim Wiley-Schwartz spoke about the tremendously positive effect on health by the reduction of traffic accidents due to the NYC Dept. of Transportation’s initiative Vision Zero.

“As we work we are seeing tremendous results, 20 percent less people were killed this year, than last year,” reported Wiley-Schwartz.

Hon. Cy Vance Jr. of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office was the keynote speaker at the Tech “Met up” and spoke in depth on the importance of cyber security for individuals, businesses and government. “We haven’t woken up to how serious this threat is” he said.

at risk by not locking their computers, not covering their laptop cameras when unused and opening emails from unfamiliar sources which can be carrying destructive malware.

While the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has been addressing cyber-attacks through the prosecution of perpetrators, they have also started a large-scale, longterm preventative initiative called the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA). In collaboration with the city of London Police, and the Center for Internet Security, the three groups launched GCA in 2015 to support the global community in addressing cyber risk.

Among the benefits of GCA are the free tools they provide including Quad 9, which protects users from malicious websites and DMARC, an email authentication that protects users’ emails from spammers and phishing attacks.

From registration to donation, Harvey stayed committed to following through on his promise to donate if needed. When he was matched to a

searching patient (a 1 in 430 chance), Harvey jumped at the chance to help. He stated, “When I was told I could save someone’s life who had Leukemia, there was no hesitation. My only questiowere when and where.”

“African American donors are rare,” said Harvey. Black donors make up only 4% of the Be the Match Registry. Black patients have only a 23% chance of finding a donor. If a black patient cannot find a match from a family member or friends, the only other option is to look for a match on the Be the Match Marrow Donor Registry; that is why it is important for as many Black or African Americans to be registered as possible.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Breaks Record with Underrepresented Minorities

T

ouro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) welcomed the Class of 2022 with a record-breaking number of underrepresented minorities (URMs). Of the 135 students in the class, 36 – over 26 percent of the class - are URMs. The influx marks three highly successful recruitment

years in a row, where the numbers keep climbing. The rise is part of an upward trend with a 55 percent increase overall in applications to TouroCOM since the 2015-16 application year. The Harlem campus interviewed 550 applicants, including 92 URM students, a 206 percent increase in URM candidates interviewed over

last year.

“As our reputation grows we are getting higher numbers of qualified applicants who desire to come here,” said David Forstein, DO, dean of the Harlem campus, who said the figures put the school near the top of URM recruitment into medicine. “We are extremely proud and excited to welcome this very talented pool of students who have chosen TouroCOM, which celebrates diversity and is committed to correcting diversity disparities in our healthcare delivery system.”

The incoming cohort is comprised of 19 women and 17 men. It includes 18 black students (six male, 14 female); 16 Hispanic students (10 male, six female); and two American Indians (one male, one female). The students hail from all over the country, with the majority from the northeast.

First-year student, Samantha Okundia, a Nigerian-American student from Dallas, Texas, said admission

to the DO program is a “testament to perseverance.” Okundia explained she took the ‘scenic route’ to TouroCOM, first completing a master’s in medical physiology at Case Western Reserve and then teaching elementary school in Washington, D.C.’s inner city for three years before applying.

“I am grateful for all the personal and professional growth I made along the way because it prepared me for success at this stage. I’m excited for the opportunity to continue growing here at Touro, and to making a contribution to the world though osteopathic medicine,” said Okundia.

Opening Night for Harlem Havana 2018 International Art Exhibit

onday, August th 6 , 2018 was the opening night for the Harlem Havana 2018 International Fine Art and Photography Exhibition and it was held at The Mural Pavilion at Harlem Hospital Center located at 136th Street and Lenox Avenue. The Mural Pavilion at Harlem Hospital Center is the most perfect site for an art exhibition and the exhibit runs through Tuesday, October 30th, 2018.

It was a hot, humid evening and the pavilion was so packed the police had to stop people from entering. It was truly a time that the early bird got the worm and late comers got left out and turned away. The exhibition features 30 intergenerational artists and photographers who honor the unique, diverse cultures of the Caribbean and how these traditions

have become recognizable in our ever-changing Harlem representing ten countries.

Harlem Havana 2018 is curated by Community Works’ Barbara Horowitz, and guest curator Elan Cadiz-Ferguson and the Cuban works were curated by Sandra Levinson of the Center for Cuban Studies.

Voza Rivers, Executive Producer, New Heritage Theatre Group started the program by introducing ¡Retumba!, the opening musical act. They provided the audience with a vibrant interactive performance that was not only vi-

sually fascinating, but also incorporated the soulful and passionate as well. !Retumba! is a true feast for the senses, always encouraging audience participation at every performance, further enhancing the cultural experience.

n August 3, the 3rd Annual Harlem Havana Music & Cultural Festival Celebration took place at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine with performances by Afro-Cuban dance group Oyu Oro and Cuban singer and composer Chino Pons.

Harlem Havana is a unique cultural and educational initiative that started in 2014 and encourages collaborative relationships between the Harlem and Cuba. The music concert was hosted by Voza Rivers, the Vice President of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and lead Harlem Havana organizer.

Afro-Cuban dance group Oyu Oro was founded by teacher/performer/ethnologist/choreographer Danys “La Mora” Pérez, who hails from Santiago de Cuba. The mission of the dance company is to honor and preserve Afro-Cuban folklore and expose other cultures to music

and dance with African roots.

Some of the ethnic groups, whose rhythms are represented in their repertoire are Yoruba, Congo, Carabali, Arará and Dahomean cultures of West Africa and Haiti.

“I want to share the culture of my country with the community of Harlem in New York. One of the purposes is to preserve the culture coming from Africa as well as to preserve the connection and the identity of Cuban culture in America, es-

Blame it on Mercury Retrograde 2018

he Planet Mercury rules the energy of communication, clear thinking, truth, travel, computers and electronics. Mercury moves slower around the earth about three or four times a year creating an illusion that it’s moving in retrograde. Illusion or not most astrologers will tell you that the things that move under the influence of Mercury will have issues. “As above, so too below” is an ancient Egyptian saying.

We are currently in the next to last cycle of Mercury retrograde for 2018. The current cycle started on July 26th and will end August 19th.

During this time communication, travel, computers, electrical devices and clear thinking seem to not work well. It is believed that new contracts, relationships and business opportunities should not be pursued while Mercury is in retrograde.

With Mercury retrograde taking place during the summer vacation season, travel maybe more stressful than usual. It is wise to make sure you have a warranty on any electri-

cal devise you purchase.

If possible, it might be a good idea to wait until after August 19th before entering in any type of contract or binding commitment.

Astrologers believe that no one is immune to the unsettling influence of Mercury Retrograde but individuals with a Gemini or Virgo Sun and those who have a Gemini, Moon or Ascendant, will feel the discomfort somewhat more than others.

fter spending the entire year working; I have decided that it is time for a much needed break! Hopefully you are not like me. I tend to work hard all the time and leave precious little time for myself. Miracle of miracles; a friend asked me to go with her to the Hampton ’s to attend an event. At

Okay that might be stretching it, but I kid you not . . . those two days were what made me decide that I was indeed socially and vacation-ally challenged. So I have made a decision.

I am going on vacation!

So, it’s time for you to come out of your cave and live! Give yourself permission to enjoy your life. Have fun.

Give it a try; you will be surprised at how receptive people can be when you step outside your comfort zone. Maybe you have a friend who needs your help. Offer your hand in friendship.

Those are words that nobody wants to hear but read “How Not to Get Shot” by D. L Hughley and Doug Moe, and you’ll know exactly how to react.

For most of your life – and, for that matter, for most of your Mama’s life, your Grandad’s life, possibly your Great-Grandad’s life – white people have been telling black folks what to do. That’s why you need this book; in fact, it “might be the most

And yet, authors D.L. Hughley and Doug Moe have managed to do something unique: they’ll make you snort just before they leap into serious-as-a-judge territory. No, this book isn’t ha-ha-hilarious all the time; it’s stand-up comedy on a page, but it’s also edgy and biting, and it talks to readers about things they’ve already been thinking but perhaps just haven’t said. Hughley and Moe offer humor – but also commentary about events, past and current; real advice, usable and solid; as well as shared outrage.

It’s a book for black people, but Hughley recommends that you pass it around because there’s always gonna be somebody next.

The first thing you need to know might be the most important: how not to get shot.

To start, learn how to “comply with police orders,” because black people, says Hughley, are “very target-y-looking.”

If you’re a mind-reader, that’s good; that’s what you really need to be.

Look online and you’ll see that white people have made it simple: “Don’t break the law and you won’t get shot.’”

Other things you might want to remember: Don’t use your pockets. Don’t reach for a weapon, a driver’s license, or dreams. Anything can look like a gun, so don’t carry anything, ever, at any time.

“Do be an angel,” but understand that things will still get “twisted” to make you look bad if you’re arrested – even when you’re innocent.

Don’t drive a car that’s too nice. Never accidentally get lost in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Dress “less threatening” and “don’t match the description.” If you have to have tattoos, “get ones that are butterflies or Smurfs…”

Know your history. And if somebody brings up the subject of taking a knee and the NFL, remind them “who brought politics into the sport in the first place.”

In a sea of humor books that are not funny at all, “How Not to Get Shot” is refreshing because it’s very funny, in the

first started writing about Doug Frazier and Stuart Reid in 2007. I was interested in the work that they were doing which was focused on closing the Digital Divide in urban communities. I have been an advocate of the empowerment opportunities that could be made possible with the access of information technology for many years.

In 2000 as the director of Urban Policy at The City College of New York, my office coordinated one of the first

major technology conferences. “Teach Harlem” was the title of the two-day conference. In the conference program I wrote “The Digital Divide will be the civil rights movement for the 21st century.”

I believed then and I know now that the greatest form of discrimination in the information age will be the lack of access to information technology, no matter who you are or where you are.

When I wrote my first article on Doug and Stu it was at the

suggestion of Angela Harden the general manager of Harlem’s WHCR 90.3 FM. Angela informed me that two brothers had agreed to make WHCR a live internet streaming radio station (www.whcr. org). When I first interviewed Doug and Stu their office was in the Bronx. They had been the team that ran cable lines in the South Bronx projects at a time when Cablevision would not touch that area.

Doug Frazer’s response to my question on DDP’s strategy for using their skills and authorization to provide the same services provided by major broadband service companies was: “We can’t compete with them”, but we can give our services free to underserved communities.

vide a free phone service, free Wi-Fi and internet services to those who cannot afford to pay for this technology is a major step towards closing the digital divide in Harlem and urban communities across the country.

In the second part of this dialog I will focus on examples of how receiving free Wi-Fi and broad band services from DDP has improved the quality of life for many individuals living in and visiting Harlem, which is very important; because no matter who you are, if you are on the negative side of the Digital Divide in today’s world you are in trouble.
