How Business Leaders Can Inspire Purpose in Their Employees

n a tight basketball game’s closing seconds, a coach will huddle his players and draw up a play designed to result in a winning shot and victory.

But, if just one teammate is disengaged, the play can go awry and the team falls short of accomplishing its purpose.

Businesses have something in common with that basketball team.

A business needs a purpose and each employee needs to be inspired by and contributing to that purpose, says Paul Ratoff, president of Strategy Development Group Inc. and author of “Thriving in a Stakeholder World: Purpose as the New Competitive Advan-

tage” (www.ratoffconsulting.com).

“If everyone in an organization feels good about the work they do and is committed to the organization’s purpose, then you’re likely to see good results,” says Ratoff, who recently launched the non-profit Foundation for Purposeful Organizations.

“But if workers aren’t engaged, their productivity can suffer and the company as a whole may pay the price.”

For years, many companies chased quarterly earnings and ignored any overarching purpose beyond keeping shareholders happy. But Ratoff believes that to survive and thrive in today’s world, businesses need to think

about more than just “shareholder value.”

Instead, he says, company leaders need to manage from the perspective of “stakeholder value,” and stakeholders include everyone who impacts the company or is impacted by it, from customers to suppliers to communities.

Among the key stakeholders: the employees.

“Imagine if you could get employees to look at their jobs as something with a purpose that goes beyond just earning a paycheck,” Ratoff says. “That could result in a more engaged workforce, better productivity and perhaps less turnover.”

In fact, studies have shown that millennials

especially seek purpose in their jobs and are quick to switch employers if they don’t find it.

Numerous companies have developed statements to define their purposes. For example, Google wants to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Roche, a biotech company, states its purpose as: “Doing now what patients need next.”

But once a company comes up with a purpose, how does it get employee buy-in?

• It starts at the top.

It’s not enough that employees find the purpose inspiring. “The leader of the company has to be inspired because the leader

will cause others to be inspired.” Ratoff says. Ultimately, it’s important that the entire management team be on board and enthusiastic.

• Make sure the purpose is clear and meaningful. Company leaders must find a common purpose that’s broad enough to be meaningful and important to employees.

In the absence of a clear organizational purpose, people focus on their individual goals and may perceive different purposes for the same organization.

• Discard what doesn’t fit. Identify company activities that aren’t aligned with the purpose and remove or transform them.

“Purpose isn’t an idea that only lives in a strate-

gic plan or on a website,” Ratoff says. “It lives in the daily operation of a business and in the ongoing communications with stakeholders. And it lives as the internal compass for keeping a complicated organization with many competing interests on course.”

n 2017, we will celebrate 190th anniversary of the Black Press in America.

Since the first publication of Freedom’s Journal on March 16, 1827 in New York City, Blackowned newspapers have led the way when it comes to raising a voice of consciousness for Black America. Today, in 2016, Blackowned newspapers still matter.

Black Lives Matter. Black Votes Matter. Black Press Matters. In order to overcome racial inequality and injustice, we have to emphasize the importance of nurturing and mentoring the rise of a new generation of freedom-fighting journalists, publishers and African American owners of newspapers and media companies.

There is a huge, qualitative difference between media that is Black-owned and non-Blackowned media that is targeted to Black consumers. Numerous national studies have documented that Black-owned newspapers remain the “trusted and respected” source of news, empowering success stories, and cultural aspirations for more than 45 million Black Americans.

The inaugural Discover the Unexpected (DTU) NNPA Journalism Fellowship Program this summer at the Howard University School of Communications supported by Chevrolet has done

remarkably well in identifying and encouraging the next generation of gifted, talented and committed young journalism scholars. The National Newspaper Publishers Association is pleased with the positive and transformative results of the DTU fellowships.

The NNPA fellows scored front-page news features in NNPA member newspapers across the nation. In addition to attending both the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., the NNPA fellows completed assignments that covered a wide range of subjects from Muhammad Ali’s legacy and Black arts and culture to contemporary Black family life, the 2016 Olympics in Rio, mass incarceration, new data on police and prosecutorial misconduct and abuse, and the struggle to preserve Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

This summer, Brandi Montgomery and Brelaun Douglas worked at the “Atlanta Voice,” Briahnna Brown and Mckenzie Marshall at the “Chicago Defender,” Victoria Jones and Rushawn Walters at “The Washington Informer,” and Tatyana Hopkins and Sidnee King worked at the “Michigan Chronicle.”

Black-owned newspapers are businesses and employers that continue to serve the economic development interests of Black communities. As the economy in the United States continues to rebound from economic stagnation and recession under the leadership of the first African American President, it should also be a national priority to ensure the advancement of the economic well-being of Black families, businesses, and communities.

In the face of historic, political opposition led by the Republican-controlled Congress, President Barack H. Obama, has achieved leadership success in restoring and revitalizing the U.S. economy. In particular, the automotive industry has set new records this year in automobile sales. Thus, we note, with appreciation, those companies in the automotive sector that have been supportive of the NNPA during these difficult and challenging times.

ver the past few weeks I have heard some common mistakes that prospective first time buyers have made to complete the home buying process. It is important to understand some basic do’s and don’ts of the home process in order to avoid making many costly mistakes.

Here are some things to consider: (1) Do not make an offer on a home until you have a pre-approval letter from an authorized lender. Know how much you can afford to spend on a monthly mortgage payment. Understand the various types of mortgage products and determine which one is most suitable for you. If you make an offer before getting a pre-approval your deposit will

be in jeopardy.

(2) Sign nothing until your attorney has reviewed the sales contract. Sit down with your attorney and go over the contract with him/her until you completely understand all of its legal ramifications. Once you have signed the contract, it is a legally binding document. It can be very difficult and/or costly to get out of the agreement.

(3) Do not allow anyone to select the members of your home buying team for you. Get referrals from your housing counselor or people you trust who have just recently completed the home buying process. Do not under any circumstances do what is called “a one stop shop” where the entire team is pre-selected.

N.O.R.E., also known as Noreaga was next up, and brought tons of energy and guest appearances to the stage. His former partner in rhyme, Capone took the stage, as well as Nature, Cormega and more. N.O.R.E. performed some of his biggest hits, including “Superthug,” “I’m Leaving,” “Oh No” and Nothin’.”

Following was Jadakiss, who was joined by his partner from the Lox, Styles P for most of the show. N.O.R.E. came back out and performed the song “Banned From T.V.” which featured Nature and Jada and Styles performing a joint verse. “It’s All About the Benjamins,” “Knock Yourself Out,” “Put Ya Hands Up,” “By Your Side” and “Why.” At this point, it was already an excellent show, and the main event for the evening, DMX hadn’t taken the stage. Surprisingly, DMX was only joined on stage by one other performer, and it was Keith

Murray, who performed his hit “The Most Beautifulist Thing In the World.” While performing some of his dozens of hits, DMX also talked about his Christian faith and the many trials and tribulations he has endured while having success in music. He also talked about growing up and dreaming of performing at the Apollo, something I have heard many artists say.

From high-energy hiphop anthems like “Get At Me Dog” and “Ruff Ryders Amthem” to his songs for the women like “How It’s Goin’ Down” and “What These B!tches Want” more sentimental songs like “Slippin’” DMX went through his complete catalogue that made him one of the biggest names in hip hop.

It was a great night for hip hop and a great night in Harlem that satisfied a sold-out crowd of energetic fans. When seeking great nights in Harlem, the legendary Apollo Theater is usually a good place to start.

by Derrel Jazz Johnson very day and night in Harlem is great, and the annual event “A Great Day in Harlem” took place on the final day of July, headlined by the legendary Gerald Levert of the O’Jays. Thousands made their way to Grant’s Tomb in Harlem for a day of fun-filled activities, featuring fashion shows, performances, and, of course, vendors with food and unique gifts.

Friday, August 5, 2016, was a great night in Harlem headlined by hip hop artists DMX, Jadakiss, N.O.R.E. and Harlem’s own Jim Jones at the legendary Apollo Theater. The soldout show saw a line reaching Eighth Avenue with fans awaiting the four MCs to grace the stage. They certainly didn’t disappoint.

Jim Jones opened the show, performing a variety of his hits and appearances on songs by other artists, including “Certified Gangstas” and the ubiquitous hit that became the anthem for the 2007 NFL Super Bowl champion New York Gi-

FILM REVIEW: MISS SHARON JONES!

S

haron Jones & the Dap-Kings is a Grammy-nominated R&B band from Brooklyn. Their groove is funky like James Brown’s. Jones’ gyrations are as wild and ferocious as Tina Tuner’s. The group’s soul shakes and their lead singer’s indomitable spirit blend into something very special, heartfelt and familial. When Jones is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, it rocks the band’s foundation. Her fight for life and that harrowing journey is what’s on view in this very emotional and inspiring documentary titled, “Miss Sharon Jones!”

According to the American Cancer Society, for all stages of pancreatic cancer combined the one-year

relative survival rate is 20 percent and the five-year survival rate is 6 percent.

Blacks are more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than Whites.

Jones is the lead singer and the star attraction of her group. Her ability to perform and record determines whether the artists she loves can keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. She has a lot of responsibilities and a lot of reasons to want to beat her deadly illness. At just 4’11” she carries the weight of a mountain on her shoulders.

Jones’ willingness to share her feelings, fears and her recollections of being told she was “too short, too fat and too dark” to have a successful singing career is

never less than courageous.

Her gutsy outlook on life puts viewers squarely in her corner. She’s an everyday superwoman letting a lot of people ride on her cape.

In many ways, she is no different than others who undergo cancer treatments: surgery, week-upon-week of chemotherapy, a loss of energy, loss of hair, doubts and despair. In other ways her experience is so unique because of her public life and a support system that consists predominately of friends and medical/healing practitioners and not her immediate family.

Veteran documentarian Barbara Kopple (Oscar winner, “Harlan County U.S.A.” and “American Dream”) takes the audience behind the scenes as

this ultra-cool music group with an old school feel goes through hell and back.

Kopple’s efforts are aided by judicious editing (Anne Fratto, Jean Tsien) and illuminating cinematography (Gary Griffin, Tony Hardmon, Kyle Kibbe).

For 94 heart-warming minutes, every emotion, every dramatic confrontation, setback and supportive gesture is on view. It’s hard not to be touched by it all. It’s as if Kopple’s camera is an invisible friend that lets you hold Jones’ hand along the way. Witnessing the singer’s day-to-day battle is an extraordinarily humbling and enlightening experience.

This personal story will make you appreciate the very essence of life. By the

end of the film, you’ll desperately want Jones to recover, revive her career and make it back to center stage.

Delicious Wine and Cheese Pairing Suggestions

I

f you’re looking for an easy entertaining idea for an impromptu gathering, a wine and cheese pairing menu is a winning option.

Either as a light meal for oneself or an impressive entertaining centerpiece for friends, wine and cheese are the ultimate culinary companions. But how exactly do you best pair the two?

To help home chefs and entertainers, cheesemaker Lisa Gottreich of Bohemian Creamery, who creates high-end, quality cheese for some of California’s top four-star restaurants, has paired up with St. Francis Winery to offer some delicious suggestions.

“Think of a wine and cheese tasting experience as having a beginning,

middle and end,” says Gottreich. “In other words, pair your lightest flavors together in the beginning of the meal and work your way towards more robust flavors later. This avoids palate fatigue and allows you to best experience all of the nuances of each wine and cheese pairing to its fullest.”

Gottreich advises that a good way to begin is with a light and refreshing white wine, such as St. Francis Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc. Priced around $17 a bottle, the bright flavors and crisp acidity of this style of wine pairs well with light style cheeses, such as Bohemian Creamery BoDacious chèvre, a fresh and tangy goat’s cheese that doesn’t override the delicate fruit-

Moving on to fuller flavors, Gottreich pairs a smooth and nicely balanced red wine with soft tannins and hints of cherry, plum and chocolate, such as St. Francis Sonoma

County Merlot, (at around $21 a bottle), with more complex cheeses. For example, Bohemian Creamery’s The Bomb is a sheepgoat blend washed rind cheese, washed in beer and aged in old Cabernet wine barrels. The result is a cheese with slight tannin in the rind, along with a very rich, creamy center that offers a good match to the elegant Merlot. Gottreich suggests serving this pairing with Marcona almonds to add in nice, crunchy texture.

She recommends saving your heartiest wine for last. A great option, which costs only about $22 a bottle is St. Francis Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel, made from grapes grown on 50 to 100

Gottreich’s Boho Belle, a semi-soft cheese with hints of vanilla and made from cow’s milk, offers pungency that isn’t overwhelming for the wine. Pairing the combination with onion focaccia adds to the rich, earthy flavors.

he Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with internationally renowned chef Marcus Samuelsson today announced a culinary initiative for the Harlem/ Havana Music & Cultural Festival—an international cultural exchange between the iconic cities of Harlem, New York and Havana, Cuba. Through this initiative, the Festival has partnered with Samuelsson’s famous Red Rooster Harlem and Streetbird Rotisserie restaurants, along with Sylvia’s, Amor Cubano, Oso, Floridita, La Fonda del Sol and Tastings Social Presents Mountain Bird to feature a special selection of Cuban-inspired dishes and cocktails. The restaurants will feature menu

items ranging from classics like tostones with black eye pea salsa, pollo a la criola to ropa vieja, oxtails and plantains, as well as a variety of cocktails, including mojitos, caipirinhas and Cuban- and Harlem-influenced fruit drinks of every flavor.

In addition, the festival will host a special Cuban-themed prix-fixe dinner event at Ginny’s Supper Club on Tuesday, August 16th at 7:00 PM. The dinner, priced at $95 per person, will include specialty cocktails, wine pairings and a Cuban menu curated by Samuelsson. Guests will also enjoy entertainment by celebrated Cuban musician and bandleader Cèsar López with his band.

Stepping Out, Not Stepping On

ecently one of the doctors at our Foot Center examined a woman who had an abscess (large infected blister) on the sole of her foot; she thought she had stepped on something while walking barefoot in a tropical country. She had – our doctor pulled a parasitic worm out of her foot!

That particular danger

doesn’t present itself here in New York, but it’s a real possibility in a number of tropical countries (and Florida!) where walking barefoot outdoors is common. Many tropical countries (e.g., Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico) also have high rates of diabetes, and the combination is often deadly. DIABETICS SHOULD NEVER WALK BAREFOOT, EVEN INDOORS, EVEN ON A RUG. If people with normal circulation want to walk barefoot indoors, just make sure to avoid small dropped items or pet accidents. There is still a danger of stepping on broken glass or a rusty nail.

Outdoors is another sto-

ry. No other animals wear foot coverings, but human animals need them; our feet originally walked on softer, giving landscapes. Today, shoes protect our feet from the impact of walking on hard surfaces plus from cuts and scrapes. Shoes (not flipflops), absorb some of this impact.

What if you want to wiggle your toes in cool grass, warm sand or in the ocean? Shoes will protect your feet in all of these situations, but if you want to go barefoot, nothing can replace watching where you put your feet. If you’re walking in grass, watch out for insects that don’t like being stepped on. At the beach look for sharp

shells and discarded soda can tabs. It’s easy to step on a sharp shell or piece of trash if water isn’t perfectly clear; water shoes can protect you there.

Do some shoes cause other problems? Of course, but their protective function is paramount in our modern environments.

Just think about it ahead of time. Except diabetics: Never do it!

• Making college more affordable: Nearly all families took at least one cost-saving measure, while most took five or more. These measures include cutting personal spending, working while in school, living at home, and taking accelerated coursework to graduate faster.

Additionally, four in five students attended college in their home state, and one in three started at community college. Eighty-five percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

• Borrowing not a forgone conclusion: Fewer than half of families borrowed last year. In fact, the proportions of funding from family savings and income and scholarships and grants were twice as high as the proportion of funds borrowed.

Student borrowing paid 13 percent of all college costs, down from 16 percent last year.

• Cost important, but not top factor: Sixty-seven percent of families narrow college choices based on cost, but when it comes to making the final decision, this takes a back seat.

amilies spent less outof-pocket for college in academic year 2015-16 compared to last year, as they took advantage of more scholarships and grants to foot the bill, according to “How America Pays for College 2016,” the national study from Sallie Mae, the country’s largest private student lender, and Ipsos, a global independent market research company.

Scholarships and grants covered 34 percent of college costs, according to the report, the largest percentage of any resource over the last five years.

Approximately, half of families used a scholarship or grant to help pay for college.

“Families wrote smaller checks for college this year as they looked less to their wallets and more toward free money to make college happen,” says Raymond Quinlan, chairman and chief executive officer, Sallie Mae, a company focused on helping families save, plan and pay for college. “Scholarships and grants have become an increasingly important part of the pay-for-college mix, and it’s encouraging to see organizations, schools, and the government stepping up to provide them.”

• Bachelor’s: the new norm: Families are firmly in agreement on the value of college: 98 percent believe it’s an investment in their student’s future and 90 percent expect their student to earn a bachelor’s degree. What’s more, 54 percent of families expect their student to earn a graduate degree.

Birth, Death and Reincarnation

T

he age old question of “what happens when we take our last breath?” has eluded the masses from the very beginning of time. Organized religions created philosophical explanations that usually contained instructions for living that would be necessary to enjoy happiness and peace in the afterlife. The politics of early Western religious orders made following theories and philosophies of life other than theirs a sin punishable by death.

Concepts of reincarnation, mysticism and the occult were considered pagan beliefs. This concept created a division between science and religion.

Many of the great minds in early Europe secretly continued to practice and study ancient Egyptian wisdom.

Secret societies like the Rosicrucians continued to study this religiously outlawed ancient wisdom. Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, Napoleon Bonaparte, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln even Walt Disney were all Rosicrucians; who studied and practiced wisdom that can be traced to ancient Kemet, now known as Egypt.

The early Egyptians believed in reincarnation. The third ancient Hermetic Principle is Vibration (see Kybalion www.theartofwarogers.info).

Modern science has proven that all things in our universe

vibrate and vibrated energy never dies, it just changes form. What many do not know is this current scientific fact is based on ancient wisdom.

Rosicrucian teaching speaks of a soul personality that enters the body at birth and leaves the body upon death to persist through many other physical lives. “Birth, Death and Reincarnation” is a title of a chapter in “Wisdom of The Mystic Masters,” a book written by Joseph J. Weed to introduce the basic principles of Rosicrucian philosophy to those who were interested.

Weed gave the early Greeks credit for much of his Rosicrucian teachings. To this

day many members of societies like The Rosicrucians and Free Masons are not fully educated on the origin of their teachings. Nonetheless I believe Weed’s basic interpretation of reincarnation is worth reading. Rosicrucians are taught to connect with their soul personality.

It is not easy to embrace the possibility that a part of you has experienced other physical lives. There is a reason why only a few have learned to connect with their soul personalities to make extraordinary accomplishments in their lifetime. It is human nature to fear the unknown. The fear of death (an unknown) and what happens when you die has played a major controlling factor in most organized religions.

ummertime brings out pretty, painted toenails! Unfortunately, many people also suffer from toe fungus, which is often very painful as well as unattractive. There are some simple and inexpensive home remedies we can use. There are also changes that can be made to some habits that actually cause toe fungus. The pain is usually caused by inflammation and swelling, and causes yellowing and thickening of the nail. Continuous exposure to moisture can be one of the causes, or wearing synthetic socks, having a compromised immune system, sweat build-up in shoes, poor foot hygiene, or weak

circulation, such as that caused by diabetes. The nail can become darker in color, misshapen and crumbly, and even begin to separate from the nail bed.

Some natural antibacterial and antifungal remedies include using the Oils of Oregano, Orange, Lavender, Coconut or Tea Tree. Simply apply a few drops to the toes, mixed with equal parts of olive or grapeseed oil, and let it soak in. At bedtime might be best, cover with wool socks if necessary, and let sit overnight. Another choice is a cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with 2-3 cups of water and soak feet for 15-20 minutes.

Whichever remedy you choose the application should be done daily until fungus disappears.

I

just love it when someone says something to me that inspires me to think about things differently. Case in point; over the weekend I went to dinner with a couple of friends. As conversations go . . . we managed to talk about our various interests and, of course, work! We have a great deal in common; we are entrepreneurs, and we have a lot of creative energy and ideas that we

would like to pursue.

We look forward to our dinners because it is an opportunity for each of us to seek guidance and frank input from one another. Our conversations are enlightening, thought provoking and sometimes downright eye-opening! If you work for yourself, you know what I mean . . . it’s easy to get stuck and frustrated because the solution that you are seeking to a challenge is often right in front of you, and you don’t recognize it because you are too close to the situation! I call it the “vacuum cleaner effect.”

Much like a vacuum cleaner, which sucks up everything in its path, the

“vacuum cleaner effect” happens when you work alone and rely only upon your own perceptions and expertise. Nothing comes in unless you allow it, and nothing goes out unless your machine malfunctions big-time, then stuff spews all over the place! Only then are you forced to look outside of your vacuum cleaner for answers or input. Now, you and I both know that to limit your interaction with others also limits your perspective. Think about all the good information you are missing out on!

Now, back to my friends. . . When I shared my challenge with them of course they were able

to look at it from their point of view and they even gave me some concrete suggestions. The issue that appeared to be so complicated and perplexing to me became crystal clear in a matter of moments. No one waved a magic wand, but though their unfiltered vision; they managed to see possibilities that eluded me!

Well, my girlfriends were right on the money! No matter how many times I remind myself to step outside of my cozy, creative environment; from time to time, I find myself in my vacuum cleaner dealing with the effect! So, I asked my friends how they manage to overcome the afore-

mentioned “effect” and their answer was quite simple, “Audrey,” they said. “It always boils down to how much you enjoy wallowing in that dusty vacuum cleaner bag. Whenever you feel a need to change that funky bag, throw it away from yourself and don’t bother replacing it. Instead, just try something different!”

It seems simple enough and now that I think about it, maybe too simple . . . but definitely worth trying. So don’t wait for your vacuum cleaner to malfunction. Face it, we all lose focus at times, and it’s too easy to go inward and collect nothing but dust; but when things aren’t going quite the way

you planned, and you need a new perspective; maybe a simple solution is the best one. So why not just, try something different? Think about it. See you next week.

Johnnie Green, Pastor of the Mt. Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem, was a guest on the 3G Experience Radio Broadcast last Thursday.

Rev. Green discussed the political turmoil in New York City and his place for changing things.

His organization MPAC gathered at the church on Thursday. The event brought Pastors and ministers from across the city and even a few from out of state. Their purpose in meeting was to improve the plight of African-Americans in New York City and to increase the impact of the Black

church on local politics.

The Church of Scientology opened its Harlem worship center last Sunday. The church will hold Sunday services and have an active community center. It is hoped that the Church of Scientology will be a major participant in improving the spiritual and social lives of the Harlem community. The church is located at 220 East 125th Street, between 2nd and 1st Avenues.

Three Tips to Help You Navigate the Treacherous 401(k) Waters

401(k) is the primary retirement-savings vehicle for many Americans.

But despite the 401(k)’s importance, the average participant’s only investment strategy is to plow money into the accounts – then do nothing. They rarely if ever make changes to the investment selections their plans offer.

“I’ve known people who had the money in the same fund for 20 years,” says Craig Wear (www.

But Wear says there is general advice that could apply to just about anyone with money stashed away in a 401(k), including: • Take full advantage of company matches.

Many companies will match employee contributions up to a certain percentage. That’s essentially free money. Yet many employees don’t maximize their contributions to make sure they get the full company match.

• Don’t let a 401(k) be your only retirement investment. “If you put all your savings in a 401(k), that doesn’t leave you many tax-planning options after retirement,” Wear says. You will be taxed when you begin to withdraw the money

It might be wise to put some of your savings in an account that won’t be taxed when you retire.

• Take control of your accounts. Many people aren’t happy with their 401(k) plan’s investment options, service levels or performance, but they don’t think they can do anything about it. Many employers have adopted rules that allow employees to withdraw a significant amount while they are still employed and contributing.

While assembling, mixing and tasting ingredients for our fresh fruit yogurt parfaits, one of the students commented “that’s too much salt!” as she observed me add a couple extra pinches of salt to the oatmeal mix for our baked granola.
