NPower Celebrates New Home for its Free IT Job Training Program for Young Adults in East Harlem

R

epresentatives from HP Inc. and HPE, who have committed to donate equipment over the next five years, welcomed newest class of young adults at ribbon cutting ceremony on July 31, 2017 NPower, a leading national nonprofit that launches IT careers for veterans and young adults from underserved communities, announced the reopening of its free 22-week IT Job Training Program in East Harlem, NY. At NPower’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 31, 2017, Dana Stepp, Program Manager for Education Solutions, HP Inc., Mara Wald, District Manager for Corporate and Global Sales, HP Inc., Tony DeLisio of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Luke Chilone of TD Ameritrade, Balaji Ganapathy of Tata Consultancy

Services and NPower leadership addressed NPower’s 39th cohort of local young adults, who will be placed in IT jobs in New York in less than six months. Former New York City Mayor, David L. Dinkins was in attendance.

“HP is proud to support NPower’s innovative education programs from technology fun-

damentals to advanced certifications,” said Gus Schmedlen, VP of Worldwide Education at HP Inc. “The jobs of the future demand a range of digital competencies, and NPower is equipping our military veterans and underserved youth to create better futures for themselves and their communities.”

“We, at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, are committed to supporting NPower’s mission to help vital communities around the country create pathways to tech careers. Their comprehensive training program is not only helping to solve the skills gap in our industry, but will also help to sustain vulnerable communities in the process,” said Tony DeLisio, VP of Financial Services Industry at HPE. Students enrolling in NPower’s 22-week program are typically unemployed, or motivated to change their career paths from part-time or low-paying jobs.

They receive 15 weeks of classbased skills and training and complete a 7-week paid internship before being placed in an IT job. Within one year of graduating, 80% of NPower alumni are

employed or are pursuing higher education.

“We are thrilled to have our own dedicated space to support the young people embarking on IT careers through our program.

And we are honored that HPI and HPE will provide laptops for our students as they endeavor toward tech careers,” Helen Kogan, Regional Director, NPower New York stated. “We are confident that our program will change their lives, the lives of their families, and the overall quality of life of their communities in Harlem and the surrounding areas.”

AUGUSTA GRUBB: Wise and Witty at Ninety Four

C

enter aisle, fifth row, first seat in the pew at the right side, Augusta Grubb, holds court with her pew partners at the Abyssinian Baptist Church on Sunday mornings. I sit in the pew directly behind her. I always get a special hello, a big smile and a warm tap on my hand.

Her presence is prominent.

Stature is tall; back is straight, though she uses a walker as a result of a fall several years ago.

That doesn’t deter or hold her back, Augusta drives that walker like it’s a brand new Mercedes parked in a special spot at the rear of the church during service.

Outside of church, I am privileged to have telephone time with Augusta. We giggle and thrown down like school girls.

Her laugh is infectious. Her

wisdom is offered sweetly, never pushy. Her enthusiasm and positivity is constant. Her love of God and her church is steadfast.

Born in Pensacola, Florida, Augusta Butler, only child of Geneva Edwards and Lawrence Butler was destined to become an educator like her mother and musically inclined like her father, the musician.

Her grandfather, W. J. Edwards, the first graduate of Tuskegee Institute, at the advice of his good friend Booker T. Washington, founded the Snow Hill Institute in Snow Hill, Alabama, where Augusta attended twelve grades. Edwards’ book TWENTY-FIVE YEARS IN THE BLACK BELT (c)1918 is catalogued at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Harlem and the Library of Congress, D.C.

Augusta got piano lessons from Aunt Alberta Lee and was a high jumper on the track team for Tuskegee Institute, preparing to attend the tournaments in Germany when the war cancelled the trip. The next step was Elizabeth State University in Elizabeth, North Carolina where her mother’s brother taught science and math. After a short stint, her mother called her home to attend Alabama A&M University in Huntsville.

In 1941, Augusta headed to Harlem, married her former high school sweetheart and graduated from City College with a B.S. in Early Childhood. She worked as a Psychiatric Aide at Rockland State Hospital for a decade, before stepping into her true destiny. In 1970, she changed careers to teach the fifth grade at P.S. 128 and then at P.S. 153 (Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Elementary School) for thirty years.

She didn’t officially call it quits

until the age of 80. When music and art was taken out of the school system, Augusta volunteered in the music department and led the student Glee Club.

She had a son, the late Melvin, Jr. and two daughters, Deidre and Michelle. Deidre is a retired music teacher/choir director from Mumford High School, Detroit, Michigan. Currently, she directs the children’s and women’s choirs of Hartford Memorial Church in Detroit. She has taught many known artists, including the Winans. Michelle is a pianist; graduate of the Music & Arts High School, NYC and an award-winning multi-talented creative artist. There are three grandchildren, six great-grands and one, great-great grand.

Augusta remembers her mother’s adamant instructions about moving to Harlem. Join a good Methodist church that has a good choir. St. Mark’s Meth-

odist on Edgecombe Avenue was first choice until she moved to Lenox Avenue and was invited to the Abyssinian Baptist Church by a childhood friend, Let the truth be told, Augusta became a good Baptist at a good church with a number of good choirs and she served as a good Usher.

Currently, she is a member of the ministry of Black Teachers Who Care; attends Monday Bible Classes at noon and Wednesday evening Manna Worship Services at Abyssinian.

Augusta Grubb, 94 years young, inspires and encourages me to stay on course, committed to my life’s journey. She is wise, witty and wonderful.

To Be Young, Black, and in Education

n the next week, I will be closing my time as a summer intern at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and beginning my final undergraduate year at Howard University.

I’ve learned more about public education at the National Alliance in two months than I have in the past year.

However, even though I work for a charter school advocacy organization, I do not consider myself pro-charter. I am also not pro-district.

Truthfully, I’ve heard many arguments that support charter public schools and many that support district schools - all with valid points and facts to back them up.

So, when I began to find myself truly confused, I did what I always do. I looked up what Black people are saying about this. Black opinion + my own thoughts = a solid case to base my life decisions on. While it may not be the most mathematical equation for success, it works for me. I Googled “Black leaders charter schools” and felt a small sense of relief come over me because I was going to get an answer.

I wasn’t going to have to wonder anymore because the Black leaders in education would tell me what their point of view is, why they have

it, where the research came from, and what they are going to do about it.

Looking back on this now, I’m aware that it sounds like I don’t use my brain to critically think, but we all do this in some form. In politics, people look up what the standard Democratic or Republican viewpoint is; in media people go to their favorite artist’s page to read their view; and in school, students go to their favorite teacher for their opinion.

As I began to read through the articles, I found topics about the NAACP and Black Lives Matter being pitted against Black leaders in education. I was pissed! So, two huge organizations that have Black prosperity at their core are at odds with Black education leaders and parents? I was so irritated that I closed the screen and went to deal with this confusion another day.

Weeks passed and I continued to gain information. I read the letter that had been written and signed by 160 Black leaders in support of charters. I watched clips of the NAACP’s special hearings on charter schools, and I researched teachers unions and their disdain for the charter movement. I turned over every rock I could find for some sort of answer.

Despite all the research and opinions, I still could not

figure out who was on the right side of history. I could not look to Black leaders in this situation because they are consumed with the politics of the district vs. charter debate, just like many others in education.

This isn’t the first time I found disappointment with Black role models - Raven-Symoné was a huge heart breaker - but this is too important to ignore. Every second that is spent focusing on which school is better or what should be the dominant structure is doing a disservice to our children. Our children are the ones suffering without a quality education and are then chastised by society for not meeting “the bar”.

I get that money, politics, and power are important, but we can’t afford to fight this fight with each other. We have no choice but to be unified. According to the Civil Rights Data Collection, black students are suspended and expelled at a rate three times greater than white students.

This is something we should be focusing on. If our children don’t make it, that not only affects us but it is on us. The white school leaders that are trying to make change will be heartbroken if the years of work they put into improving public schools don’t pay off, but we will be crippled.

This is not an attack on

Black leaders today. This is a cry for help. I’m a 21-year-old intern, trying to graduate from college. I’m doing everything in my power to change the narrative for our children, but I don’t have the power, yet.

Black leaders, I’m begging you to use your power to create. Create the schools for our children that also provide jobs for our people. Position it so that Black school leaders have the resources to train up our kids. If you are an organization with the words Black, African American, Negro, or Colored People in your title then this is your duty, this is your fight.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, just take a page from Pimp My Ride and make it better. At the very least, create a space for conversations to flow freely regarding the schools our children go to.

We may never reach a consensus and that is okay. There are multiple different ways to learn, to teach, and to lead. If you can’t do it, use your resources to find someone who can. This isn’t a conversation I wish to pick up in twenty years when I am in your shoes and we don’t have 20 more years to wait. I don’t care what structure is used to educate our kids, we just need something that works.

Home Buying In Harlem

Be Prepared to Buy Now

he housing market in Harlem has been extremely competitive for the first two quarters of this year.

There is no indication that this trend will change. Prospective buyers have, in many instances, started a bidding war for property. First-time buyers must hasten their efforts to prepare for purchase. Currently the interest rates have remained steady, somewhere around 4.25% for a 30- year fixed rate mortgage.

As a first-time buyer, you must prepare to complete the purchase of your home as soon as possible. That means you will need to aggressively save money for the down payment and closing cost. If your credit is showing several late payments or accounts have gone into collections they must be resolved.

You also need to do your research to determine the current home values. Know how long the home has been on the market. This information will be extremely beneficial when you start the negotiation process with the seller.

If you are not familiar with the home buying process attend the Homebuyer Education Workshop Seminar series at Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement. We will be starting a new series on Thursday, September 7. Seats are available if you are interested in attending.

Acquiring education about the steps in the home buying process is essential to successfully purchasing a home because an educated buyer is an informed buyer. In addition to learning

about the home buying process, you will learn about the eligibility requirements for the various grant programs. There will also be presentations made by various professionals working in the home buyer industry.

There are still some good housing deals on the market, but they will not last much longer.

The fall is usually an excellent time to capitalize on the housing market. Current homeowners who are looking to sell their property will start gtting anxious to find prospective buyers. Don’t miss this opportunity.

NBLCA’S Health Action

T

he National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc, (NBLCA) sincerely thanks and congratulates its many partners, colleagues, and friends who worked tirelessly to save the Affordable Care Act. Without a doubt, a repeal

of the Affordable Care Act would have a devastating impact on life-saving healthcare for millions of Americans. We know that it took many different approaches to achieve such a success for stopping the “Skinny Plan”. However, working collaboratively across disciplines around this country, the response to calls for sending emails, letters, making visits to representatives’ offices, attending town hall meetings, protesting and, yes, getting arrested, made the difference! While we may pause for a moment to celebrate and be grateful that the proposed GOP health care bill screeched to a halt, we are mindful there is so much at stake

about which we must continue to be vigilant and non-relenting in our efforts to resist.

The fight for improved access to health care in America is far from over, as the House Appropriations Committee plans to gut funding to much-needed services, including AIDS programing. The proposed 2018 House Labor, Health and Human Services (Labor HHS) funding bill would eliminate the Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI)—that undoubtedly would devastate HIV programming in already underserved communities. The proposed cut—approximately $54 million—would remove the funding from

important community education, prevention, and vital HIV/AIDS related services from those living with the virus. The MAI provides vital funding for programs across the country that serve minority communities and is a necessary initiative in the fight against the HIV epidemic. In addition to the elimination of the MAI, funding will be removed from Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP) and redirected towards abstinence-only programs. While TPPP promotes evidence-based, practical, and inclusive sexual education to young adults, abstinence-only programs provide little

in terms of real-world information and often exclude information for LGBTQ individuals.

Though there are numerous disappointing cuts within the Labor HHS bill, the elimination of the MAI and reduced funding for TPPP is extremely serious. Countless studies have debunked the idea that abstinence-only sexual education is effective in delaying the decision to have sex or results in a reduction of sexual partners. To fund programs that are known to be ineffective, while eschewing evidence-based programs is truly unfathomable. Communities of color, which are already underserved and heavily burdened, will be even more affected as a

result of these cuts.

With less access to sexual education, preventive services, community health education, and important health services, these decisions could very well result in the undoing of much of the progress in controlling the HIV epidemic in communities of color.

Y

ou didn’t do it.

Whatever it was, it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t do it – you weren’t even around when it happened. You don’t know who to blame. Maybe it was your dog, your mom, or maybe, as in the new book by Dorothea Taylor, illustrated by Charly Palmer, “There’s a Dragon in My Closet.”

The little boy was sure of lots of things: he had a soft, warm bed to sleep in.

He had a dog he played with every day. His daddy loved him and his mother took care of him. And there was a dragon in his closet.

No, seriously! It was “a kind and gentle dragon” but it was mischievous – which, of course,

the boy got blamed for.

But he wasn’t the cause of the mess in his room or the broken flower pot or the muddy footprints on the floor. It was the dragon’s fault. The boy didn’t do any of those things. He was innocent and he tried to make his parents believe him, but they didn’t.

The dragon ate an entire jar of cookies – for real! The dragon wiggled behind the bathroom door and made the boy spit toothpaste – honest!

The dragon brought soup for the boy when he was sick… didn’t he? And that dollar when the boy lost his tooth – that had to be the dragon’s work, right?

Then one day, the boy’s

mom got tired of listening to stories of a dragon in the closet. She told the boy they’d “get to the bottom of this” and she dragged him up the stairs to his bedroom, where she opened the closet to find a bouncing ball. Then a shoe. A few toy odds and ends. A pair of pants draped over a bar in the closet. A boot, a bat, and a belt. Together, maybe, possibly, if you squinted, it might look something like a dragon, kinda-sorta, a little bit.

It was all in his head, said the boy’s mother.

There was no dragon in the closet. And she went downstairs, but not before the boy saw…

Much as I loved the

idea behind “There’s a Dragon in My Closet” and its wonderful theme of imagination, there was one thing that I wondered: will kids understand it enough?

With a catchy rhyme that starts out fun, author Dorothea Taylor tells the story of a boy and his dragon. Quite frankly, the story stays at a level of “fun” well enough, but some of the language seemed more adult-like than childish.

Kids may not completely comprehend the story because of it, and that may be a distraction for an outloud reader.

But never mind – come for the imagination, and stay for the artwork by Charly Palmer. I can’t say enough about that part of this book: it’s colorful, in sweeping-blendy tones and

bold marks. Just – wow.

Keep your eyes on the little boys’ t-shirts, by the way. You’ll be charmed, and so will your 3-to6-year-old. He’ll love “There’s a Dragon in My Closet,” and who could
