All of us want to get through this as soon as possible. I have been wearing my mask and rubber gloves every time I got out for the

past 3 weeks – although I try to stay home as much as possible. You can wear a bandana, a scarf, a mask you make yourself or buy a mask from one of the entrepreneurs who has transitioned into making them right in the community. I bought my masks from an entrepreneur in the community. My masks can be washed and they also sell the filters so you can change the filter each time you wash the mask. The masks I bought were $15 each and come with a filter. Harlem Talks to Harlem II

ver the course of the current COVID-19 public health crisis the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce has coordinated weekly conference calls with GHCC board members, city, state and federal elected officials plus business, civic, public service, cultural, health, religious, higher education leaders and GHCC media partners to receive updates on how COVID-19 is affecting the Harlem Community and discussing strategies to address a collective community response to the current health crisis.

Some of the updates from last weeks series of

conference call include the following: The City College is preparing to start a drive and walk through COVID-19 testing station in the college parking lot located at 135th street between Convent and Amsterdam Avenues. I will report the starting time when I receive it. CCNY is also allowing the first 70 medical school graduates to receive credentials early so they will be able to provide support in local hospitals like Harlem hospital.

Touro College will allow their medical students to graduate in order to aid in local hospitals.

The Harlem Salvation Army 540 Lenox Avenue will deliver food and services to seniors in need from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm call 212 862-3900 for further information.

GHCC in partnership with Salem United Methodist Church (W. 129th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd) and Assemblywomen Inez Dickens will launch a weekly meal service for families in need from Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. This service is scheduled to continue up to June 7th longer if needed. Salem will also provide Grab and Go lunches on Wednesdays

NYC Young Men’s Initiative, have expanded hours and opened a new Harlem location at 302 W. 124th Street. New Yorkers in need will be provided with one week of free, pre-packaged groceries.

The Hunter College Food Policy Center has produced 59 Coronavirus NYC Neighborhood Food Resource Guides with key information on food access for each community, such as meals for students and seniors during this time, delivery services for people with disabilities, and resources for immigrants.

Each year, Hunger Free America produces updated Neighborhood Guides to Food & Assistance for all five boroughs, with information on how and where to access SNAP, WIC, and other resources. The Manhattan guide is available in both English and Spanish

COMMENTARY: Who Gets the Ventilators?

he “big and bad” United States is seeing its world dominance recede. We are being vanquished both by a virus and by the ignorance of the “Commander in Chief.” We now know that there are not enough tests to detect the coronavirus, nor enough ventilators to treat all of those who are ill. Medical professionals are talking openly about the choices they will make and the fact that some people will be judged more likely to survive than others.

Through which lens will these medical professionals decide who gets a ventilator?

Will age be the only lens, advantaging a 30-year-old over an 80-year-old? Will there be other filters? Will a man with children get preference over a single woman? An author over a homeless person? A white person over a person of color? Medical professionals are being asked to choose and to judge. How will their conscious or unconscious bias play a role in their judgments?

The National Academy of Medicine describes itself as “an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide

unbiased and authoritative advice to decision-makers and the public” On its website, it acknowledges “evidence of racial and ethnic disparities in health care.” Will this evidence influence the distribution of ventilators?

People will need these ventilators to breathe. They may need them for weeks, not days.

Some will survive, and some won’t. The survival rate is a function of the bizarre avoidance our so-called leaders make decisions about this pandemic. But who will be saved?

An innocent infant or the despot who lives in the house that enslaved people built?

Dr. Dorothy Irene Height was 98 when she died in 2010.

She was productive until her final days. In her own words, she was “dressed and in her right mind” until the end.

Would the doctor choosing who got a ventilator see the history contained in that precious black body? Or would he

make choices based on stereotypes? I know that my Black 92-year-old mama, disabled by a stroke, still gives her children strength and love, smiles, and sharp reprimands (yes, the lady hit me when I used profanity in her presence. Whose life would I trade that for?)

We must not forget the many ways that Black bodies were used for medical experiments, from the use of Black women’s genitalia to develop gynecology through the Tuskegee syphilis studies that lasted from 1932 through 1972.

Black people’s lives have too often been white people’s experiments. It is not paranoid, but merely cautious, to wonder who will get the ventilators, and whose needs will be sidelined. Now the words “Black Lives Matter” take on a more pointed meaning.

This coronavirus illustrates our nation’s faultlines by class race and gender. The coronavirus also refutes the notion of our nation’s exceptionalism.

The United States just ain’t all that, despite our “greatest” rhetoric. We are stumbling compared to other countries – Italy, China, Spain – who have attempted, generously, to show us the way forward.

All marginalized people are, in one way or another, at risk. Ventilators cost between $25,000 and $50,000 and even more when there is competition to obtain them. Will hospitals with limited resources be able to obtain ventilators?

Those who are income-challenged are more likely to go to hospitals that are under-resourced. Lower-income people are at greater risk and have less access to quality health care.

The coronavirus will hit princes and paupers, members of Congress and members of the clergy, computer whizzes and those who don’t have computers. We may all be at risk from the coronavirus, but class, race, and gender will likely determine who has the best chance at recovery. We can’t call ourselves “great” unless we are fair. Will everyone have a chance to recover from this virus?

What Do You Say to Someone Battling COVID-19?

I

t is human nature to want to say the right thing at the right time.

To utter words that just might help heal.

I recall working at The Times-Tribune newspaper in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the mid-2000s.

Long story short, every time a family of a U.S. soldier got the devastating news that their loved one had lost his or her life in Iraq or Afghanistan, I was now the reporter to do the interview.

“You know how to ask the right questions,” the late John Murphy, then-assistant managing editor, told me. “You seem to know what to say.”

If Murphy were alive today, I would tell him

that the coronavirus diagnosis that my wife Shenay and I received this week has rendered me with not a whole lot to say. I would say to him also that I’m leaning on the encouragement of family, friends, and colleagues – many of them understandably don’t know what to say. Some do.

I’m grateful for the tons of texts, emails, videos, and social media posts of support.

Whether it’s one word, a like on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, or a full paragraph of someone expressing their thoughts, my wife and I are grateful.

Norman Rich, the doit-all editor and content manager for the Nation-

al Newspaper Publishers Association and BlackPressUSA.com, suggested I share with our readers some of the encouraging messages I’ve received.

Most of the messages were “I’m praying for you,” and many had the emoji for prayer or praying.

One of the best was a close friend who lives in Pennsylvania. He decided to leave a voice message that I retrieved from Facebook.

“Stacy, I’m sorry this has happened to you and Shenay. Anything — and I do mean anything — that I can do. You know you can count on me. I’ll even send an uber with some ointment!”

The prayers and well wishes are great to have.

Here’s a sample of others: • “I can send you the antigen.”

• “Take Vitamin C and some Zinc.”

• “Breathe in some steamed orange peels

and sea salt.”

• “You need supplies while they last?”

• “This is crazy, and I hope you feel better.”

• “What did the doctor say? Want me to talk to her?”

• “I know a guy in the State Department, want me to call him for you?”

• “Pace yourself. Don’t be anxious.”

• “Tylenol, bro, Tylenol.”

• “Listen, use natural healing. Don’t let the doctors kill you.”

• “The strongest weapon is patience.”

• “The most effective tonic is laughter.”

• “Don’t worry, have a lovely day.”

• “Stacy and Shenay, hang in there. I’m praying for you. Let’s

• “You will get through this.”

• “I’ll drive all the way there. Just say the word.”

All of the words are encouraging. I’m happy to say that all of my family, friends, colleagues and others have known exactly what to say to me, and at the right time.

If you’re reading this on a website or on a social media post, feel free to leave a comment or to share wishes for someone you know that is also dealing with this virus one day at a time.

Because of you all, I’m sure Shenay and I will beat this thing, and we will be in an even better position to help someone else.

t’s always the right time to commit to healthy habits, behaviors and steps to improve your physical and mental health. With the COVID-19 pandemic creating so much uncertainty and upending so many routines, experts say that focusing on the things within your control is particularly important.

“At this particular moment -- challenging as it may be -- it is very important for all of us as individuals to recognize that our actions can and do have a collective impact,” says Dr. Patrice A. Harris, president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “A lot of people are grieving at this moment.

Here are some simple steps from the AMA to maintain your physical and mental

health during the unusual times of COVID-19: 1. Channel your feelings of anxiety or helplessness into action. Practicing physical distancing and making sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds are two steps that protect your health and the health of

others. Create a safety action plan for you and your family.

Also consider how small gestures – like offering to pick up groceries for an older or at-risk neighbor who may be anxious about leaving home -- can make a big difference.

2. Take care of yourself physically. Get as much sleep as you can, try to include fruits and vegetables into your diet, and make sure you move. With many gyms and parks closed and physical distancing in place, it may seem harder to work out, so consider options at home, including dancing, to stay active.

3. Create new routines.

With more people working from home and/or caring for school-aged children, the daily lives we had before COVID-19 are a distant memory. But

building routines -- time for work, time for meals, time for decompressing -- is critical to creating a new normal. In the world today, there are so many things we can’t control, but our schedules are something we can.

4. Take time to turn off social media and the news. It is critical at this moment to know what is happening in the world and to stay connected with family and friends, but if social media and 24-hour news are making you anxious, consume them in doses.

5. Feel your feelings. It’s natural to worry and be afraid at a moment like this. It is also important to remember there are physicians, public health officials at all levels of government, as well as experts in the private sector, working tire-

lessly to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19.

6. Stay connected. Social media gives us a common connection point during times of isolation, but there is real opportunity at this moment to stay connected via phone calls and video chats with friends, family, and even people you haven’t heard from in a while. Physical distancing is important, but it’s still okay to socialize.

7. If you have children, talk to them in an age-appropriate way, and avoid ascribing feelings to them. Don’t say, “I know you’re scared.” Kids are observant and they’re wise.

They may know things are different, but they may not be afraid. Let them know smart people are working on ways to keep us all safe. Model healthy coping.

CENSUS Must Move Forward During COVID-19 Pandemic

T

his year, the Census Bureau is making preparations to complete the huge task of counting everyone in the U.S. The U.S. population is now over 330 million people. Interest groups had just begun to seriously push people to complete CENSUS forms and be counted.

CENSUS results decide the allocation of congressional seats and monetary resources.

People in the U.S. must be counted every ten years.

The CENSUS count is mandated in the U.S. Constitution and has been going on every ten years for over 230 years.

But the limitations on mobility and personal contact mandated on the national and state levels because of the deadly coronavirus have now shifted years of planning.

Almost 40 percent of U.S. households have responded online to the CENSUS since March 10. In 2010, over 98 percent of households that were sent CENSUS forms were recorded. But minorities and children were undercounted and 16 million people missed being counted.

Mail service continues and now advocates are doing what they can to encourage people to fill out CENSUS forms knowing so many Americans are in their homes and not at work.

Those who do not fill out the 12-question form will be reminded with postcards. On May 27, over 500,000 CENSUS takers are scheduled to begin tracking down people who don’t fill the forms out. Federal law mandates that people must respond to the CENSUS though no one

has been fined for not responding since the 1970s.

The CENSUS Bureau is pushing to get people to respond early because tracking down those who don’t respond is expensive and made more difficult because of COVID-19.

General Motors CEO, Mary Barra speaks with finesse, unique style and honesty to the National Automobile Dealers Association Special to the NNPA

he finale at the annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) show recently held in Las Vegas, NV was a face to face sit down chat with 2019 NADA Chairman Charlie Gilcrest and Mary Barra, General Motors Chief Executive Officer. Gilcrest’s demeanor, which can be business aggressive was rather uplifting and down home in his candid discussion with Mary Barra. Gilcrest is a legend himself in the automotive business located in Southwestern, TX which, is family owned and has a stellar reputation of doing more than just selling cars. He is known for building relation-

ships with his customers for over 35 years.

Usually on the last day of your average convention most participants are ready to head to the airport and bust a move to get out of town. However over 400 attendants made sure that they were on hand to get some wisdom from the young lady, who runs one of the largest automotive companies in the world, Mary Barra. Barra’s is not new to the car business, and the entire audience was on the edge of their seats to learn from a woman who is unlike anyone in the automo-

tive biz! Barra came across as smart and honest. She talked so matter-of-factly that everyone in attendance became comfortable when she talked about life and the challenges of being the first female CEO of a leading automotive company.

Mary Barra started off talking about her entry into the automobile business at the tender age of 18 as an intern for GM working on the assembly line, where she witnessed firsthand what it means to have pride in your work. The experience to be around workers, who are taking care of spouses and children showed Mrs. Barra in indelible ways how important it is to take pride in the production of your work.

Without a doubt her success can be attributed to her upbringing. She shared the importance of the values her parents instilled in her. Her father, Ray, worked for at GM for 39 years. He worked for the Pontiac division in Detroit. Despite not going to college, he was a natural engineer and just as smart as his supervisor, was not only well respected but inspired Mary to be the best person she could dream to be. While her Mother believed in the importance of getting Mary and her brother a college education. She graduated from the General Motors Institute with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. She went on to Stanford to earn a Masters Degree in Busi-

ness Administration. Barra said the family and good friends are essential in keeping her happy, while maintaining a heavy workload. Being around family and good friends also provides her an opportunity to relax and think.

The room full of automotive dealers continued to listen to her exchange with Charlie Gilcrest as she talked about the challenges that dealers are facing in this ever-changing world. She went on to share that because of the extra little things that dealers do, she receives and reads a lot of mail from customers complimenting the extra touch that makes a, “customer for life”. She described how GM is taking great pride with an extra focus on electric cars and the future of

the automotive industry. Barra also emphasized the benefits of diversity and that GM is constantly looking for more ways to be more inclusive in employment and proving opportunities for new dealerships.

Barra told the auditorium, “the bottom line will result in higher profit margins and a better work atmosphere.” She made a heartfelt point when she thanked the dealers for everything that they do to help customers, their employees and the American economy.

Little things with a touch of honesty still mean a lot as GM continues to lead the industry. The NADA represents about 16,500 new-car and -truck dealerships, with both domestic and international franchises.

he idea of working from home has always been a glamorized one. Rolling out of bed whenever you’d like, sitting poolside with your favorite drink at noon. Man! That sounds like a day anyone would enjoy. Especially if you find yourself working for a company that you may not particularly like physically going to. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen corporations big and small come to a major halt due to COVID-19. Businesses have essentially locked their doors and are requiring employees to work from home. While some may have been excited, others are realizing that working from home is not for everyone.

I grew up in a family business and was accustomed to working for long hours at my

desk. I had an innate discipline that helped me stay glued to my seat and maybe a little too much. But as times changed and opportunities arose for me to work from home, I realized that I had to implement some different habits at home than that of my former office space.

For those of you that are new to “working from home,” here are a few tips I’ll share with you to help you in your transition.

1.Pick a Designated Work Area When I started working from home, I thought I could sit on my bed, spread out documents and my laptop and have at it. Well, I soon found that I would start off sitting up, legs crossed and attentive, then progressively move into a slouched position, followed by a full-on fetal position with complete attention on the television while

my computer and papers were strewn off to the edge of the bed. Talk about a reality check.

After being in denial about the obvious distractions, I opted to get an actual desk with a chair and sit there. I went from papers all over the house to everything being in one central location.

The desk and chair in a designated part of the house started me off with the structure I need to work efficiently.

2.Structure Your Time This is a must. Try to keep the same hours you had when you were physically going to work. Working from home can be one of the biggest distractions there is. From the television to the kitchen to the laundry and even YOUR BED! These are all things that will beg for your attention during the times you should be working. When I first started working

from home, my house seemed magical. It just had a different feeling on Wednesday at 11 am than a Saturday or Sunday at 11 am did. If you don’t structure your time you won’t get anything done. The great thing about going to work is that your office was, for the most part, a space designated purely for work. It pretty much shaped how you worked and to what degree. Your home is usually considered a place for rest and relaxation – a place you escape to. So, understand your brain is going to need some slight rewiring and some patience.

3.Take Your Breaks ‘In the workforce, breaks are mandated. According to Psychology Today, “A ‘break’ is a brief cessation of work, physical exertion, or activity. You decide to give it a rest with the intention of getting back to your

task within a reasonable amount of time.” Did you know that sitting for long periods of time is said to put you at a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression, and obesity? Simply stepping away from your desk and taking a walk, stretching or some form of activity can reduce the negative effects of too much sitting. If you have other individuals in the house, taking breaks affords you the opportunity to connect with them and shift your mind from any stressful thinking you may be engaged in.

4.Create an End Time Knowing when to start working is just as important as knowing when to stop. When I initially started working from home, I found that when I got into a good flow, it was hard to stop. So, I wouldn’t. I would sit from 7 am until 11 pm at times

with minimal breaks. I was determined to ride out the wave of productivity, sometimes working beyond midnight. My dad would always encourage me not to work past the midnight hour because I was cheating myself out of the next day. He was right. Pushing yourself beyond an established cut off point can lead to burnout quickly. Ultimately, it’s about setting boundaries with yourself. Give it your all within the time allotted and then stop. Put all your focus and energy into the hours you set, the same way you did when you physically clocked in at work. When you’re done – then you’re done. Save work for the next day. There will ALWAYS be something to do.

Time is the one thing we cannot replace. Remember to unplug and regroup.

itate on the end of fear, anxiety, illness and death caused by COVID-19. The focus was also on a new beginning of world peace, wellness, enlightenment, and empowerment for all.

At the exact time of the global 10:45 pm meditation an astrological portal opened due to a conjunction of Pluto and Jupiter. Both planets are in Capricorn, Saturn rules Capricorn. Saturn is now in Aquarius. The energy porthole that opened on April 4, 2020 (4.4.4) was the beginning of the age of Aquarius the age of awareness, freedom, enlightenment and love.

By the time you read this article, I predict many will gradually start to experience a different way of thinking about themselves and others. That is why April 4, 2020 will become a historical day. It will be recorded as the beginning of the next step in human development and awareness. Many believe that COVID-19 was man made due to competitive mind thinking. If that is true, it was a last effort of a few to control the

masses using fear and doubt along with economic suppression.

Ironically this lastditch effort to maintain the age of competitive thinking, created the opportunity for millions of people to use collective thought manifestation as a tool to address a globally shared health issue Without the fear and anxiety caused by COVID-19, I doubt if it would have been possible to convince millions of humans throughout the world to meditate and become one mind at the very same time when Saturn Pluto and Jupiter moved into the energy of Aquarius; this was no coincidence welcome to the age of Aquarius.

Fund Helps Breast Cancer Patients Impacted by COVID-19 Crisis (Statepoint)

G

etting old ain’t for sissies.

Aging is not for the weak, whiners, or wimps, not for ‘fraidycats or those with no confidence, and aging is absolutely not for the inflexible. But then again, as in the new novel by Terry McMillan, “It’s Not All Downhill from Here,” either.

The last thing Loretha Curry wanted was another “surprise” birthday party.

Good heavens, she was going to be sixty-eight on New Year’s Eve and she told her husband, Carl, that she didn’t want the fuss again this year. He would listen

to her wishes, but her girlfriends? They never would.

Yet, they did.

Korynthia, Poochie, Lucky, and Sadie stepped back and let Carl handle a special treat: a weekend at Loretha’s favorite hotel in Palm Springs, just the two of them. It was exactly what she needed to take her mind off everything: her mother had been moved into assisted living; her sister, Odessa, was some kind of witch; her daughter, Jalecia, was Heaven-knows-where and probably high on something; her granddaughter, Cinnamon, was a “space cadet”; and Loretha was just plain tired.

A weekend away with Carl would be perfect.

But before it had even

started, her birthday weekend ended in a way that Loretha could never have imagined, with a loss both unfathomable and unfair. When it was all over and everybody went home, she could barely remember what hour it was.

She closed her businesses because she had no energy to run them.

Staying at home, alone and staring at four walls, wasn’t an option, though. Jalecia moved in with Loretha’s ex-sisterin-law, who was always calling for money. Cinnamon announced that she was pregnant with twins and could she have one of Loretha’s rentals?

Then Korynthia insisted that Loretha join her dance class, some young man showed up and an-

nounced that he was Carl’s long-lost son, and Poochie started planning an all-girls cruise week.

And life goes on after a bad event: uphill sometimes, and sometimes not...

FaceTime isn’t cuttin’ it. Skype’s not enough.

You can get by with phone calls and texts but it isn’t the same: you need your friends, just as in “It’s Not All Downhill from Here.”

And yet, don’t think that this is just another “girlfriends” book. Yes, absolutely, it’s a story about women’s friendships, but author Terry McMillan also explores what it’s like to grow older, when a body’s Of A Certain Age but the mind forgets that’s so. Readers

who’ve glued together the pieces of a life shattered know all about this, and what it’s like to do it again tomorrow, if the need arises. McMillan’s characters possess just the right amount of wisdom for that, which will appeal not so much to her younger readers as, perhaps, to the age group that originally loved “Waiting to Exhale.”

“It’s Not All Downhill from Here” actually comes at the right time: it reminds readers that even in Novel-Land, things can get messy and you’ll be okay. Find it for your next book-group virtual-meet. Read it, and share with your Sissies.
