M

ore than 20 senior citizens transformed into runway models and took to the catwalk at the Carter Burden Network Annual Fashion Show. The event took place at the Carter Burden/Leonard Covello Senior Center (Covello) in East Harlem. Covello is one of four New York City-based senior centers in the Carter Burden Network (CBN).

With the help of professional backstage preparation with make-up by artists from CMAD-The Center of Makeup Artistry and Design, seniors were dressed ‘to the nines’ modeling formal wear, jewelry and accessories, as well as traditional ethnic clothing

with Chinese, Hispanic, and African flair. Some of the models wore outfits that they personally designed and sewed onsite in the Sewing Construction class in the Macy’s Creative Arts Center at Covello.

After the runway program, the event concluded with a party including music,

dancing, and refreshments.

William J. Dionne, Executive Director of the Carter Burden Network, who emceed the event, said, “While we run many diverse programs that bring our seniors joy, the fashion show is the most anticipated event of the year. Our models prepare for this for months…and it shows! Today, personality, pizzazz and professionalism shone

epresentative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement to recognize April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day: “During World Autism Awareness Day, we light up the world blue for the children and adults who fight daily for acceptance, awareness, and understanding,” said Rep. Espaillat (NY-13). “People with autism have recently gained representation in the film, and television industry which is of vital importance to diminish the harmful and retrograde stigma associated with autism.

Guns Down, Life Up!

T

he last few weeks in America have witnessed a whirlwind of activity led by the nation’s youth, in concert with their parents, teachers, etc. demonstrating in support of the need for a major focus on gun control. The echoes of those demonstrations have been heard in the concrete canyons of New York City, nationally and internationally.

These activities have been supported by the Honorable Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York City, stating that that he too would be part of the demonstration if he were of high school age. And indeed, he did join in.

With that in mind, we respectfully challenge the Mayor to have his actions better complement his rhetoric by encouraging and supporting New York City’s own Anti-Gun Violence program: GUNS DOWN, LIFE

UP (GDLU). Because it appears to many that he may have mistakenly supported the demise of this critically important program.

New York City has taken full and well-deserved credit for dramatically reducing the violent deaths of its citizens by a combination of legislation, aggressive policing, and community collaborations.

Much of this work has been done in the NYC Health and Hospitals, the public hospital system. GDLU is the innovative creation of a knowledgeable system that recognizes that gun violence is a public health problem.

It is in the process of being completely decimated by the stroke of the cutting knife of the New York City budget reduction process controlled by City Hall.

For four years, a little more than 24 professionals have been implementing a city wide, strategic plan to reduce the number of

people shot in the most challenging neighborhoods in New York City, including Harlem, the South Bronx, Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, South Jamaica, etc. GDLU has successfully instituted an inside/out approach.

Inside: Train health professionals to engage the victims of gun violence to understand their increased risk of death once they suffer one penetrating wound. Outside: Support the community’s efforts to educate itself on the methods of preventing youth from engaging in activities that lead to gun violence.

Hospitals including Harlem, Lincoln, Bellevue, Coney Island, Kings County, Queens, and Gouverneur were and remain “all-in” for GDLU. More importantly, hundreds of inner-city youth passed through the mentoring programs created by GDLU. Each NYCHH facility committed to

developing a homegrown approach to mentoring young men at risk for involvement in gun violence.

So despite our City’s documented success in reducing shootings and murder by gun in, the door, unfortunately, has been left open for the slippage. As a wise NYPD detective once told me, “there has been no change in the flow of guns through New York City, it’s the change in attitude that has kept more people from making the decision to shoot.”

Our Attitude Changers are being eliminated by lack of fiscal support. Join with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce as we convey to City Hall and our other elected officials, the need to keep the GUNS DOWN, LIFE UP program alive.

do not recall ever seeing the housing market being this competitive. Prices are literally exploding and are practically out of reach for prospective first-time low to moderate income home buyers. What this means for those now entering the housing market is there are very few affordable properties available.

You must now face the unavoidable truth that you cannot afford to own property in Harlem. This is a sad but apparently true statement.

Many Harlem residents have been priced out of the housing market. You are now being forced to make a difficult decision. You must either continue to pay rent for an apartment that provides no investment return or look

to other areas of the city to purchase a home. Neither of these choices are ideal, if you want to remain in Harlem.

However, here are some other viable solutions to consider if you want to make buying a home in Harlem a reality: (1) buy with family members or trusted friends.

There is an old saying about “strength in numbers.” If you cannot afford to purchase a home on your income alone, seek to establish a business partnership with one or two-family members. I know of several situations where family members have pooled their resources to successfully purchase a home. Just make sure your attorney has covered all the legalities of the contract to protect your

investment for buying a home together.

(2) Another option that is growing in popularity is the rent to own arrangement. I used to be extremely skeptical of these programs because there is a high tendency of it being a scam. Be careful when entering into this type of agreement. Make sure all the contractual terms are spelled out. Have your attorney review the contract with you before signing. Remember you will still need to be pre-approved for the purchase.

On the Scene with Derrel Jazz Johnson at the New York International Auto Show a beautiful sedan that also features Cadillac’s “Super Cruise” lane-keeping system that’s currently exclusive to the CT6.

Super Cruise is a semi-autonomous system that works in tandem with ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). It works on 130,000 highway miles in the US and Canada, using LIDAR road maps.

This allows the CT6 to stay centered within a lane with 4” accuracy, handsfree driving. It still requires your attention looking forward.

Derrel: What are some of the best things to see at the 2018 NYIAS? Cadillac introduced a brand-new SUV called the XT4. This is a beautiful new SUV (or consider it a full-size crossover) that starts at $35k.

This is an incredible

price for a Cadillac SUV. It has all the creature comforts that you expect from Cadillac, including surround cameras (not just a simple backup camera), their infotainment system with GM Marketplace, and so much more.

Cadillac also refreshed CT6. This is

credible truck. Definitely worth checking out what GMC is doing with the truck segment. Huge innovations.

And finally, while not possible to see on the vehicle, Buick has introduced a new safety feature called Active Hood on the new Buick Regal. In a pedestrian collision situation, the back of the hood (closest to the windshield) will pop up, essentially creating a glove or cradle effect to lessen the blow to the pedestrian. Again, incredible new innovative tech from GM.

ueen Hatshepsut ruled ancient Kemet (Egypt) from 1479 to 1458 BC; she was the longest-reigning female pharaoh in history. During her 21-year reign, Queen Hatshepsut used commerce as a tool to raise consciousness and a spiritual path toward self-realization. A merchant priesthood was developed to teach and utilize the concept of Sacred Commerce to achieve the vision of the first queen of commerce.

Sacred Commerce is a wonderful book by Aymen Sawaf and Rowan Gabrielle. This work serves as a foundation for a movement focused on revitalizing Hatshepsut’s concept of reconnecting commerce and spiritually. People, Plan-

OW TO USE/ P R E PA R E HERBS. Different parts of an herb are used in different ways. The soft, delicate parts (yin) - which include the leaves, buds, and flowers, are never boiled because the therapeutic properties will be boiled away.

They should be added to the boiling water (in a cup or pot), covered, and allowed to steep for 20 minutes.

The harder, woody parts (yang) that include the roots, bark, stems and root barks, need to be boiled in order to release the therapeutic

properties from the tough, woody cellulous. They should be boiled, covered, for about 30 minutes, then allowed to steep, then covered for another 20 minutes.

Sometimes the “whole herb” is used, referring to every part that is “above ground.”

When the whole herb is used, it is usually before flowering.

thought that I would rerun 7 of the 10 “Spiritual Must-haves” from an article that I have published at the start of every new year since 2005 as a reminder to all of us to lean into the humanity that resides in each of us and to harness our collective power of prayer to reach the humanity that is somewhere within the spirit of lost and tormented souls.

It is within us to create a bet-

ter world and bring an end to the violence that threatens to destroy the peace that God wants for each of us.

Please consider this list of spiritual must-haves to apply to all seasons to come.

Perhaps if we all adopt some basic principles we can improve the quality of our lives and the lives of those we come in contact with on a daily basis. Resolve to . . .

(1) Respect yourself and others. By respecting the differences that make each one of us unique, we have an opportunity to experience the rich mosaic that life has to offer. It sounds simple: Accept a person regardless of race, religion, creed, color or country of origin.

(2) Feel compassion with an open, loving heart. Hate is contagious, but so is love. It is within each of us to think

and feel with love. Set aside your own interests to allow your spirit to hear unspoken pain and heartache. Respond with kindness, understanding and humility when asked to understand and comprehend the seemingly impossible.

(3) Develop understanding and be gentle with yourself and others. People’s life experiences help shape their personality. No two people share the same perspective on anything even if they experience it together. Make room for others and their experiences.

(4) Begin to value time, yours and everyone else’s.

Life is short, too short to waste it procrastinating or with people and things that don’t value you and your time. Spend time with and appreciate your family and loved ones each day.

(5) Have a prayerful spirit. Take time each day to meditate or to pray for the welfare of the world and its people. The universe needs your support.

(6) Commit to at least one kind act each day. How much time does it take to reach out and brighten someone’s day? To quietly acknowledge that the world doesn’t revolve around you?

To realize that we all have to look beyond our own pain and circumstances to help others? To know that by taking time to be kind we are helping someone else heal?

(7) Work toward inner peace. I think it was Jasmine Guy’s character, Whitley in an episode of A Different World that I found particularly significant who said, “Relax, relate, release!” I found myself repeating those

three words (with a chuckle, I might add), but never really practicing the intent. Well, it’s a new day! Let go of the turmoil that threatens to bog you down, and move forward in peace, knowing that a higher power has everything under control. Know it from the very center of your spirit. Even as negativity and turmoil surround you, you can wear a spiritual armor stronger than any protection human beings can devise.

So there you have it. Of course if you make these seven must-haves a part of your life, the world won’t change overnight and neither will you, but you might set the wheels of personal—and collective—change in motion. Think about it. See you next week.

he Dunlevy Milbank Center, located at 1432 West 118th Street, is run by the Children’s Aid Society and is an important community force in Central Harlem and has been for generations.

The gymnasium is home to the Milbank Flyers basketball teams and thousands of kids have learned to play basketball there. Preston Sharpe is one of 10 volunteer coaches for the last seven years. At present, they have 95 males and 40 female youths from third grade through 16 years old that make up the basketball teams. Preston is the coach for boys from third grade to eighth grade and he invited me to come and watch his team practice.

One sign that an organization is making a difference is when past participants in a program stay connected and/ or return to visit. I witnessed

these connections this past Friday night at the center. I spoke with Campus Director Casper Lassiter, who started coming to Milbank at 9 years old and he has spent 36 years at Milbank; 9 years in his current role. I spoke to head coach and athletic director Coach Rose (Roosevelt Byers) and he too started coming to Milbank Center

when he was 9 years old. He volunteers at Milbank and works as the freshmen team coach at St. Raymond’s High School for Boys in the Bronx.

basketball. He lived on 117th Street & 7th Avenue and credits the seven years he spent at Milbank with saving him from the streets. Playing basketball gave him something to focus on and helped him secure a college education. Sherod graduated from Winston Salem State University with a BBA in Marketing Management and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He lives in Highpoint, NC with his wife, Shamaira and two sons and he owns several businesses in three states. His son Sherod III is on his team for third to fifth grade players that pro basketball player Chris Paul supports by the team’s attendance at Paul’s CP3 Academy Camp in Winston-Salem, NC. His team was practicing until another Milbank alumni arrived.

He played at Milbank as a young boy and Coach Rose helped him get into St. Raymond’s, the high school he graduated from.

dren in poverty to succeed and thrive. Director Casper and his volunteer coaches say they don’t buy into the idea that you can’t save everyone; their response is why not? His team makes sure the program is engaging the youth and is still providing quality services amid change. In the past, their teams have qualified to play in national AAU tournaments, but they need assistance in

raising funds for official uniforms and for traveling expenses like lodging and food.

Many of the players come from low-income families that can’t afford these expenses, however, when they look like a team, it boosts their morale and their level of play. They need help in raising funds. We’re a part of their village so what can we do to help them raise funds to assist them?
