Harlem Historical Moment: Ruby Dee Place & Ossie Davis Way

Stephanie Woods pril 21, 2019, a historical day in the heart of Harlem as the North East corner of 123rd Street and St. Nicholas Avenue were named after two historical icons: Ruby Dee and her husband Ossie Davis. Ruby and Ossie, as they were warmly knownwere not only movie royal-

ty, but the treasured couple were Harlem’s social, civic, arts and civil rights power couple. Harlem has been the place where they both started their careers in theater and were extremely vocal in regards to their civil and everyone else’s rights!

Their over 50 year career, was centered in the heart of Harlem and their

black pride, was front and center as it took center stage of their life. Today, not only their (3) children, Nora Davis Day,Hasna Muhammad and son Guy Davis were in attendance, but a host of grandchildren were in attendance to commemorate their famous parents and grandparents.

Center, petitioned heavily and thanks to Harlem’s political power heads-the streets 123 and St. Nicolas Avenue were renamed: “Ruby Dee Place & Ossie Davis Way”. Harlem’s political heavy hitters and black cinema royalty was on deck as they each spoke candidly of the loving couple. Guests included; The Reverand

Al Sharpton, movie legend Melvin Van Peoples, Senator Brian Benjamin, NY State Assemblywoman Inez. E. Dickens, Manhatten Borough President; Gale Brewer and a host of community activists and members of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network as well as Harlem’s Cliff Frazier. Their legacy was deservant of a street name according to the Dwyer Center Co-founder, Cliff

Frazier, Frazier also noted “their involvement of black culture and constant fight for social justice awarded them this honor”. The love story may have ended after their deaths-Ossie Davis February 2, 2005 and Ruby Dee September 20, 2014, but their legacy will live forever on 123st. and St. Nicolas Avenue, In Harlem where they will forever be together as Harlem royalty!

Nipsey’s life: A hussle that motivates, resonates around the globe

he life, death and legacy of Nipsey Hussle not only deeply touched those who live in his Crenshaw community and the Greater Los Angeles area, but people across the country and around the world were mourning the 33-year-old man whose work in the streets and the suites was inspirational, and rooted in a commitment to build and help his people make progress.

Ermias Joseph Asghedom was seemingly born to be a bridge that connected people to worlds that seemed distant and, in some cases, carried warning signs that read, “Do Not Cross.” The distance might have been as far away as the Horn of Africa or as close as blocks that surrounded the house where he grew up.

Born in 1985 to a Black mother from South Central Los Angeles, and a Black father from Eritrea, a country situated on the Red Sea in East Africa, Nipsey carried the DNA of a revolutionary, in his genes. His father, Dawit Asghedom, fled his home country in the midst of war where the combatants’faces all looked the same, and landed in the U.S. where he would become politically active. In 1975, Dawit was photographed in New York City holding a sign that read, “Down With Apartheid and Imperialism.”

A decade later, his second and youngest son would be born in a place fighting a similar war in which the combatants’ faces, once again, all looked the same, and the son would embody a fearless spirit opposed to oppressive forces in South Central Los Angeles.

The name Ermias is Hebrew and when

translated means “Sent by God.” A cursory look at Nipsey Hussle’s life, his works and response from the Black community and Black world in the aftermath of his death seems to bear witness to the meaning of his name.

Nipsey was born and raised in Crenshaw which is controlled by the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips; a community that is basically bordered on all sides by rival factions of the Bloods street gang. He joined the group. However, despite being affiliated with the Rollin 60s, unlike most members of Los Angeles street gangs, Nipsey was able to move, relate and associate seamlessly with those who were, by street code, the opposition, with essentially no beef—something unheard of in a city where having the wrong color rag (bandana) could lead to dire, and sometimes fatal consequences. He collaborated with artists in “rival” gangs and in media interviews talked about how he and others in Los Angeles built intentional relationships across gang color lines to keep conflicts out of the music and provide an example of how to enjoy mutual respect and mutual success.

Those relationships went beyond Los Angeles and spread to other parts of the country as he toured to pursue his music and business ventures.

“If he met you, you were his people.

That’s how he made you feel, and we don’t have a lot of people in this rap game who are like that. That’s why nobody is saying anything bad about Nipsey,” Terrance Randolph, a Chicago-based social media brand manager and influencer, known in the hip hop music

industry as Hustle Simmons, told The Final Call. “I don’t know what purpose God had for his life, but he must’ve lived it out.”

By the time Nipsey Hussle was 14, by his own accounts, he had left home and begun taking care of himself, hustling on the streets of Crenshaw to survive. By the time his rap career had begun to take off and people started to recognize his name, acknowledge his talent and respect his art, Nipsey made sure to let everyone know, as the lyrics of one his songs go, he was a man with a different thought process, personal blueprint and unlike the usual “rap n****s” in the game.

So, how do you get the people affected by what we’re really trying to solve, involved?” For Nipsey, the answer was being an example of what Black ownership meant and looked like, which in itself, was a game changer, especially for those from his community. With family and partners, he purchased the strip mall where he once sold CDs out of a car trunk, opened businesses, advocated for children and created a shared work space for techies in the hood.

According to media reports, there were over 101 million live streams in the two days after Nipsey’s March 31 passing. Streaming and purchasing the music was encouraged because the income directly benefits his estate. Victory Lap, his latest album, sold 64,000 copies the week of April 1. Other popular songs that were streamed included:

Racks in the Middle featuring Roddy Rich and Hit-Boy (11.8 million); Dedication featuring Kendrick Lamar (9.6 million); Double Up featuring Belly and Dom Kennedy (8.5 million), Last Time That I Checc’d featuring YG (7.1 million) and Hussle & Motivate (2.9 million.)

The proud West Coast rapper began his career in the mixtape circuit, selling his albums from the trunk of his car in Crenshaw. They were a success and helped him create a buzz and gain respect from rap purists and his peers.

In 2010, he placed on hip-hop magazine XXL’s “Freshman Class of 2010”—a coveted list for up-and-coming hip-hop acts—alongside J. Cole, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and others.

Jay-Z even bought 100 copies of Hussle’s “Crenshaw” for $100 each in 2013 and sent him a $10,000 check.

Nipsey, once signed to Sony’s Epic Records, hit a new peak with “Victory Lap,” his critically acclaimed major-label debut album on Atlantic Records that made several bestof lists last year, from Billboard magazine to Complex.

At this year’s Grammy Awards, “Victory Lap” was one of five nominees for best rap album in a year that saw hip hop dominate the pop charts and streaming services, and debates ensued about which rap albums would get nominated since a number of top stars released projects, including Drake, Eminem, Kanye West, Nas, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Migos and DJ Khaled. Cardi B’s “Invasion of Privacy” won the honor in February, while the other nominees alongside Nipsey were Travis Scott, Pusha T and Mac Miller.

UniverSoul Circus Is Back and It Remains THE BEST!

accompanied by Zeke and guest Ringmaster Shala it was time to find out which was the loudest side of the audience and everyone got their scream on! An adorable dog act followed with poodles doing conga lines, jumping through hoops and jumping rope with people.

The acts this year have a couple from Havana Cuba on rollerskates doing moves that took your breath away.

They did injury defying moves and were simply amazing to watch! WOW! An equestrian act featured lovely horses with riders doing acrobatic moves while on a running horse. Rough Riders had men riding horses while a woman climbed on their shoulders. Some moments that were amusing

and funny involved audience members suddenly having microphones placed in front of them for them to lip sync to and act out the words to songs by Whitney Houston and Lou Rawls. This circus is home and every year it makes you feel welcome as it plays so much great, familiar, ol’ school music.

The trapeze act was high up and fun to watch. This act was one man walking from one hanging rope to another, but here’s the difficult part— he did it while hanging upside down with no net underneath him. In making you feel part of the circus, three people were chosen from the audience, 2 men and 1 woman and they were shown what to do by the very funny man with the whistle. What

he gave them as props and what he asked them to do I won’t say. You know you want to be surprised.

From Guinea, West Africa, two muscular men did acrobatic and contortion moves. They were so toned and their bodies so disciplined. Fresh The Clowns, three young men with very colorful, rainbow wigs entertained the audience with hip hop dance moves. Chinese acrobats flipped, summersaulted, did 4 and 5 person totem poles on each other’s shoulders. The Bone Breakers, an act of three African contortionist, did moves that would make you draw back and say “what, oh my God”.

They bend and twist in ways that don’t seem humanly possible. But you have to see

it to believe, if you dare.

Ringmaster Lucky turned his attention to the audience, first to the children in the audience and had them stand and sing “Little Einstein,” then for the older crowd “My Girl” was played. In both cases everyone sang along, it was so good! The tightrope act was thrilling.

An animal act included camels, zebras and a mini horse.

Audience participation again—big beach ball bouncing—YES! Extreme riders roared the house down. Oh my God when I hear those motorcycles revving up, my heart was pounding and then they flew out in the air, when the riders doing all types of dangerous stunts. It was AMAZING! One of the things I’ve

always appreciated at the UniverSoul Circus is the fact that they always include God and the importance of everyone in the world getting along and accepting one another. A beautiful praise dance group performed an inspirational dance. It was calming to watch and managed to ground everyone.

You walk out with a feeling of joy in your heart!

The acts are from South America, Mongolia, the U.S. Cuba, Guinea, West Africa, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Montego, Bermuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Brazil, Russia and South Africa. Now, the Floyd Bennett Field may be a bit off of the beaten path, but it is so worth it. Please go and experience it with those you love, you’ll be glad you did!

This marvelous Black owned circus, which features as always, an international cast of acrobatics, contortionists, aerialists, stilt-walkers, limbo dancers, tumblers, horse, camel, zebra and dog acts is at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn through May 12.

It is now in its 25th year.

One of the things that I always look forward to with UniverSoul Circus is the audience participation, like the call-and-response of “When I say Big Top, You Say Circus” and the audience goes wild and has so much fun doing this. There’s also the reaction to hearing Ringmaster Lucky start a children’s rhythm and everyone in the audience join in. Of course, by now the show is known for its Soul Train line where five women and five men in the audience compete dancing to ol’ school music.

It’s also great when the man with the whistle comes out and engages the audience in a clapping competition, only using the whistle. But this year, the circus is taking audience participation to a new level. Four men were selected from the audience and each was given a chair to sit on. One by one the chairs were taken away and the men were made to support each other’s bodies and they managed to stay up. Don’t ask me how, I don’t know.

With colorful costumes hailing from Trinidad & Tobago Stiltwalkers and dancers, including limbo dancers that limbos low to the ground underneath a firey bar performed in the ring.

Lorraine Toussaint: Veteran Actress Talks ‘The Village’ and Brooklyn

orraine Toussaint has plans. The SAGaward-winner and NAACP Imageaward nominee that has an acting career that spans more than thirty years, is starring as Patricia on NBC’s mid-season replacement “The Village,” a show about a motley crew of residents living in a building in Brooklyn with interconnected lives. Filling the time slot of NBC’s mega hit “This Is Us,” “The Village” features an ensemble cast made up of a “who’s who” of television stars (Dominic Chianese, Frankie Faison, Moran Atias, Michaela McManus, Jerod Haynes, Grace Van Dien, Warren Christie and Daren Kagasoff) working together to convey the story of a “fam-

ily” supporting each other as their lives unfold.

Toussaint, whose career began on the stage, worked for many years in television as a guest star on iconic television shows like “Law & Order,” “Crossing Jordan” and “Ugly Betty.” In recent years, Toussaint has moved from the margins to the center of the drama, most notably as inmate Vee on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, which

earned Toussaint a Critic’s Choice TVaward. Driven, Toussaint currently stars in season three of AMC’s “Into the Badlands,” and recently wrapped filming of Julie Taymor’s film, The Glorias, where she plays feminist icon and civil rights legend Flo Kennedy.

Toussaint is an actress who has had the opportunity to play a wide variety of roles, from a concerned mother on “Rosewood,”

to a futuristic prophetess on “The Badlands” to civil rights activist Amelia Boynton (Robinson) in Ava Duvernay’s film Selma.

When discussing how she chooses characters while promoting “The Village” at SCAD’s aTVfest, Toussaint talks about the journey from taking roles you can actually get to actively deciding to be brave and bold in her choices.

“You know, there’s a point in your career where you take whatever you can get. And then, early on in my career, I realized, oh, I don’t want to do that. I actually want to do certain kinds of roles,” says the Trinidadian born actress.

“You then begin to be brave enough to begin to say no to certain things. And then there comes a time, when

you reach a point in your career where you intuitively choose certain kinds of work. I’m so pleased to be at that point and that I’m still relevant,” she adds.

“The Village,” which takes place in Brooklyn, is a homecoming for Toussaint, who got the call while filming “Into the Badlands,” in Ireland.

“You can’t be in Brooklyn and not have Caribbean representation,” Toussaint offers. “I wanted to make sure that Mike Daniels (showrunner) brought that culture into the show which you see in Season One.” Toussaint incorporates her upbringing and Trinidadian culture into the character of Patricia when bringing her to life.

“We [Black Women] are so many things and

we aren’t often allowed to show all of those qualities on TV,” Toussaint muses.

“This show is different. I play a black mama but I am allowed to be vulnerable, sexy, right, wrong and that’s why she’s interesting. She’s familiar yet different.”

Familiarity yet difference is what makes “The Village” special. “It feels easy and relatable,” says Toussaint. When asked what she wants audiences to get from this show, the enduring actress ponders momentarily. “I want audiences to wish they lived in this building or in this community. I want people to realize it actually takes small gestures to reach out to someone where they are in order to create a little village of your own.”

How Nationwide Program Supports Early Childhood Education (Statepoint)

oday, there is more awareness that the future of the world is in the hands of young children. It’s understood that between birth and 5 years of age, the brain develops rapidly to build the foundation of cognitive and character skills necessary for success in school, health and life. It is now widely accepted that the same dollar will go much further if invested early than it will later on, and more research is showing that quality early childhood education reduces dropout rates, poverty and crime, while improving the skills of the workforce of tomorrow.

However, inequality in early childhood education produces inequality in ability, achievement, health and adult success.

early childhood education generally did not have the widespread support it does today. Fifteen years ago, in its headquarters state of Pennsylvania, the government didn’t have a line item in its budget for early childhood education, and fewer than 2,400 3- and 4-year-olds were enrolled in state-funded preschool pro-

grams. In 2017, more than 28,000 3- and 4-year-olds were enrolled in Pennsylvania state-funded preschool programs, according to research done by the National Institute for Early Education Research.

Pain often comes from an attempt to help somebody who doesn’t give a damn about you. It is the reason many a good person goes bad. People will protect themselves against this kind of personal anguish.

We learn how to survive in spite of disappointment.

We all eventually learn how to navigate a world in which we’ve come to believe nice guys do finish last, takers succeed and cheaters, well, they cheat.

Now, here comes scripture with the edict that giving is always better than receiving. As a matter of fact, it is a Christian prerequisite.

I thought about this and came to the following conclusions: You don’t know what kind of mother you’ll be until you have children.

You don’t know what kind of friend you’ll be until you become one. You cannot know the depth of your ability to love someone until you are head over heels caught up in it.

The point is you can’t really know yourself as a human being until you share your life with others, without fear, without restrictions, without conditions. It’s that

here a lot of things in our Christian belief system that require a leap of faith, including faith itself. The whole notion of blessings is like that. I think I’m beginning to understand blessings a little more clearly from a spiritual perspective.

Haven’t we all been taught at one time or another to give rather than receive?

Christian or not, kindness and goodwill are thought to be wonderful attributes of all people.

Forgiveness and mercy are considered staples of the Christian diet. The result, we believe, in life now and in the next is God gives rewards for a life spent giving with no hidden expectation of receiving in return.

Now all that sounds good until, somewhere in your world, life happens.

Unfortunately, at a very early age we learn that life is cruel, unpredictable and the only religious factoid we experience is that our kindness is generally taken as weakness and our generosity viewed as foolish.

Life and the people in it will use you if you allow it.

being a blessing thing.

For many, including me, this is tough duty because life is so cruel. However, only by being a friend can you know true friendship.

Only by giving love unconditionally can you understand unconditional love.

Only by being a blessing can you know being blessed. It doesn’t appear to work any other way.

If you go through life just existing with a self-imposed set of criteria, then guess what? That’s what you’ll get in return; love and friendship with strings attached.

You can’t expect your prayers to be answered if your prayer life starts and stops with “I.” I believe you block countless blessings if your prayers include no one but you and they echo the trials and tribulations of your life only.

This is evident by knowing the difference between praying in faith or praying out of fear. God really shouldn’t have to ask what you have done for Him lately; when He asks so little of you.

Just act like you know who He is and who you are in relation to Him. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” John 12:13.

Like I said, being a blessing is the only road to being blessed. Now take a look at the nonsense of this world. It should give you clarity.

May you be a blessing to someone, and may God bless and keep you always.

That’s right; it is time to pull out all the warm weather clothing that we reluctantly packed away last September. Finally the opportunity to wear all the sexy sleeveless tops, flirty dresses, skirts and who could forget . . . swimsuits, shorts and sandals.

Warmer weather means baring a bit more skin than usual, which means that it is also time to think about

looking your best. Face it; there isn’t a tan you can get or sexy dress you could wear that will make up for winters wear and tear on your body. If you have already prepared for summer then enjoy, but if you haven’t it is time to do a little housekeeping! Before you bare anything at all take a quick inventory of some of the things that bear (sorry, couldn’t resist) consideration: Hair Patrol: Hair on

your head is a good thing, but hair coming out of unexpected places like your bikini line, the top of your toes, legs, or cascading from your armpits is frightening! There are several methods of removal that you might want to think about using to get rid of it, shaving, depilatorizing, waxing or lasering; choose a method that works best for you, but whatever you do; do something!

Nail It: Face it; if you want a “well manicured look” getting manicured is essential. Nothing says more about you than your hands and feet; nothing will ruin your look faster than crusty heels, jagged cuticles, overgrown toe nails or peeling polish!

Since summer is an opportunity to expose those

toes, take time to pamper your feet. Give your hands a break too. A weekly professional manicure and bi-weekly pedicure is a must but if your budget can’t handle the expense do it yourself. If you don’t have the time or inclination to maintain your hands and feet; do everyone a favor and use clear polish and wear pumps instead of mules or sandals.

Protect and Buff: Nothing feels better in the summer than the warmth of the sun on your skin. By now we all know how important it is to protect the skin we’re in by using sunscreen religiously but also important is moisturizing.

Before you really expose your skin to the elements, be sure that you use an exfoliating scrub to remove any dry skin that may have

accumulated under those heavy winter wraps. Pay special attention to your feet, elbows and knees and then apply your favorite moisturizer for a soft touch.

Eye, Eye: That’s right; your eyes deserve special attention too! Protect those peepers with a good and fashionable pair of sunglasses to protect them from the sun’s glare.

Caution: There is such a thing as too much exposure. Unless you are at a nude beach, baring it all isn’t necessary. Leaving a little something to the imagination has been known to inspire artists and poets throughout the ages. So instead of letting it all hang out this summer . . . Inspire someone instead. Think about it. See you next week.

n Saturday May 4th the last day of Harlem Holistic Wellness Week 2019 I will introduce my second self-published book The Art of W.A.R. Y

ou could be rich someday.

That’s what they say: you could have a great job, a nice car, and a crib on the beach, if you want them. They say it could happen, if you seize opportunities that come your way.

They say it’s possible to be successful if you just pull yourself up by some imaginary bootstraps. And according to D. Watkins in his new book “We Speak for Ourselves,” they are lying.

Oprah, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kanye. Of

course, you know who they are but did you ever notice that they aren’t like most black people?

That’s something D. Watkins sees in the books he reads on race, in the TV he watches, and events he attends: there are “different types of black people” and when it comes to news and “maybe even in society….

People from the street are absent…”

In Watkins’ world – “Down Bottom” in Baltimore – gunshot is a common background noise. It’s also

common for multiple generations of black men to die by bullets, for girls to get pregnant early, and for boys to sling drugs.

What else do they know, except what they see? Kids on the street are not “dumb,” he says, but a “street hustler mentality” is given to them as a sort of heritage because there aren’t a lot of choices, opportunities are few, and the need for money is powerful. It doesn’t help that education for black students is often underfunded, proper

nourishment is sometimes lacking, housing may be sub-par, “open-air drug markets are real,” cops can be “more crooked than the crooks,” and “Black Taxes” exist.

And yet – Watkins is proof that success is possible, but it’ll take action: promote literacy. Teach a child something. Get to know people who are different than you.

“Be the person you needed growing up.”

Speak up, but remember that your voice won’t mean a thing “if action is not added to those words.”

Observant readers will find simple actions for change-making, and reminders that we always hold the power to act. There’s quiet advice for keeping a cool head when wrongs are presented, and a gently-urgent plea that differently-backgrounded people spend time together.
