GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE! L’Oreal and the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women recently held their annual program of workshops for some special young women. The workshops offered mentoring, career readiness and scholarships for some of the participating women, This is an example of one of the programs the organization participates in to be of service to the community. I am a member of the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women. (see page 11) Princess Jenkins of the Brownstone is promoting and selling tickets to an upcoming fashion show in Harlem featuring menswear designers.

Fair Housing Act: A Milestone on the Journey to Equality

half-century ago, the Fair Housing Act was enacted to prohibit discrimination in housing based on race, color, creed and national origin. The law also supported NAREB’s efforts to increase Black homeownership which we believe serves to increase wealth and other economic outcomes for Black Americans.

We have since experienced highs and lows in the journey towards economic empowerment and Black homeownership. While sometimes challenged, we are not discouraged. And, we have learned vital lessons along the way.

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) has

advocated for Black Americans to own their homes since 1947, and we are proud to play a leadership role in that struggle. But this is not a solitary endeavor. We must grow a “Community of Concern” by partnering and actively involving civil and human rights organizations, community-based and social service organizations, business groups, and the faith-based community-our oldest and most trusted institution.

We must collaborate to create strong, viable communities that help to stabilize Black Americans and their families through homeownership.

In 1970, two years after the passage of The Fair Housing Act, Black homeownership was 41.6 percent. It reached its height in 2004 at 49 percent. Today, Black homeownership stands at 42.1 percent, almost the same as nearly 50 years ago. The economic downturn of a decade ago hurt many Black homeowners with high foreclosures, upside-down mortgages,

and financial upheaval from which many are still struggling to recover.

Today, economic segregation remains a problem. Urban centers, long the home of Black Americans, are being gentrified. Many with deep community roots are being forced out by rising taxes and skyrocketing housing values.

While obvious obstacles like Jim Crow segregation no longer exist, we still face formidable obstacles to owning homes. Obstacles like credit scoring, which is based not on how diligently we pay our bills, but on how much consumer debt we can amass. Obstacles like crippling student debt, which impacts Black Americans deeply. Obstacles like unfair mortgage lending practices.

Despite these challenges, we know that wealth can be built through education, through financial literacy, through creating and growing our Community of Concern to support homeownership. This is

how Black America educates its children and how we set up businesses-by using equity from our homes to invest in ourselves, our families and our futures.

We stand on the shoulders of NAREB founders and visionaries like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who spoke to NAREB in 1967 about the need for “middle-class Negroes to ... publicly identify with the problem of poverty which engulfs the life of the masses.”

NAREB’s motto is “Democracy in Housing,” and we will continue to fight for that. We must continue to be vigilant. We must continue to EDUCATE Black Americans, to ENCOURAGE Black Americans, and do everything we can to EMPOWER Black Americans to build wealth, to build stability, and to invest in our futures through that most fundamental part of the American Dream: homeownership.

If your projected purchase date was to buy a home this year, then maintain your focus and continue moving towards achieving your goal. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t quit.

Continue pushing to reach your home buying target.

If you have been currently attending any open houses that are on the market, you realize the home buying process is more difficult than you expected. The competition for purchasing an affordable home in the Harlem community is very intense. This is a seller’s market. The demand for housing is far greater than the available supply. This is the primary reason home

values in Harlem are rapidly escalating. It is also why low to moderate income first time buyers are getting frustrated because they are effectively being priced out of their own neighborhood.

The best strategy is to remain positive throughout the process. Trust yourself that you can make homeownership a reality. Remain patient and believe it will happen when the time is right for you. For most people buying a home is not an overnight process.

Many first-time homeowners have made horrible decisions because they rushed in a contract thinking it was a bargain before weighing all possible options? It is important to take your time. Do your research. Discuss your plan

and each step of the process with your housing counselor.

They are your most reliable resource in this process.

Adjust your timetable for purchasing a home. Push your projected purchase date back perhaps by 12-18 months.

Continue to aggressively save as much as possible for the down payment and closing costs. Eliminate all unnecessary expenses except for the basics – food, clothing, and shelter. Be vigilant in your search. Be ready to move when the perfect housing opportunity becomes available.

hen chronic knee or hip pain from arthritis or injury becomes a daily struggle, undergoing joint replacement surgery may become a tempting option. But is there a role for growth factors or stem cell therapy if the arthritis is mild? It’s a question orthopaedic surgeon Kevin D. Plancher, MD, is asking and attempting to answer as treatment advances offer patients options beyond what’s been available for many years.

Q. I have found that I don’t sleep as well as I used to when I was younger. How common is this?

Many people believe that poor sleep is a normal part of aging, but it is not. Sleep patterns change as we age, but disturbed sleep and waking up tired every day are not part of normal aging.

Seniors need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults—seven to nine hours a night.

Unfortunately, many older adults don’t get the sleep they 12

need, because they often have more trouble falling asleep. A study of adults over 65 found that 13 percent of men and 36 percent of women take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep.

Also, older people often sleep less deeply and wake up more often throughout the night, which may be why they nap more often during the daytime.

Nighttime sleep schedules may change with age too.

Many older adults tend to get sleepier earlier in the evening and awaken earlier in the morning.

Here are some pointers to help you get better sleep: Go to sleep and wake up at the same time, even on weekends. Sticking to a regular bedtime and wake time schedule helps keep you in sync with your body’s circadian clock, a 24-hour internal rhythm affected by sunlight.

Try not to nap too much during the day—you might be less sleepy at night.

Try to exercise at regular times each day. Exercising regularly improves the quality of your nighttime sleep and helps you sleep more soundly. Try

“In a sense, the surgery can give them their lives and independence back and restore their ability to get back on the playing field or even just walk without discomfort.”

Joint replacement surgery, though requires anesthesia and is invasive. Incisions are large or small and some patients may stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 days, while others may return home.

“There are certainly some big advantages to getting a new hip or knee,” Dr. Plancher explains.

Research in animals has been encouraging and in studies with humans is suggesting promising effects, but is still early and not entirely conclusive. Try to get some natural light in the afternoon each day.

Be careful about what you eat. Don’t drink beverages with caffeine late in the day.

Caffeine is a stimulant and can keep you awake. Also, if you like a snack before bed, a warm beverage and a few crackers may help.

Don’t drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes to help you sleep. Even small amounts of alcohol can make it harder to stay asleep. Smoking is dangerous for many reasons, including the hazard of falling asleep with a lit cigarette.

Also, the nicotine in cigarettes

Create a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Make sure there are locks on all doors and smoke alarms on each floor.

A lamp that’s easy to turn on and a phone by your bed may be helpful. The room should be dark, well ventilated, and as quiet as possible.

Develop a bedtime routine.

Do the same things each night to tell your body that it’s time to wind down. Some people watch the evening news, read a book, or soak in a warm bath.

Use your bedroom for sleeping, not daytime activities. After turning off the light, give yourself about 15 minutes to fall asleep. If you are still

awake and not drowsy, get out of bed. When you get sleepy, go back to bed.

Try not to worry about your sleep. Some people find that playing mental games is helpful. For example, tell yourself it’s five minutes before you have to get up and you’re just trying to get a few extra winks.

If you are so tired during the day that you cannot function normally and if this lasts for more than 2 to 3 weeks, you should see your family doctor or a sleep disorders specialist.

Columbia University Host Hip-Hop Education: Propelling & Preserving the Moment

rganized by Columbia University School of Professional Studies, three Columbia Community Scholars held a dialogue titled “Hip-Hop Education: Propelling and Preserving the Movement,” on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018 at Faculty House located on 116th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive starting at 6:30 pm. The event was free and open to the public and it was well attended; standing room only by the end of the discussion.

Believe it or not Hip-Hop is approaching its 45th anniversary and the style of this genre of music has touched the seven continents not only in music.

Hip-Hop has impacted fashion, film and media (news, ra-

dio, television and social), how folks walk, talk and rhyme. We can add academia to the going list as well.

Three Columbia University Community Scholars Martha Diaz, Regan Sommer McCoy and Peter Noel explored how Hip-Hop education happens and how it is evolving, including how we need to play a leading role in ensuring its true legacy.

World Conference Focus on New Technologies to Fight Poverty, Reduce Migration and Promote Sustainable Development

n April 13 , in the UN the XVIII Infopoverty World Conference (IWC) discussed the importance of ICTs for sustainability and put forward low-cost digital solutions having high social impact.

In 1999 yours truly had just been appointed Director of the Information and Communication Office of the European Parliament in Milan, Italy. My task was to plan events to explain to citizens what the EP is and promote voter participation in the then upcoming European Parliament Elections in 2000.

Internet was just becoming a major tool for communication, but it was unclear – like for every innovation- if the advantages would be greater than the possible risks.

I concluded that the EP needed to support the Conference, and the rest is history.

Here we are at the UN, 18 years later, holding a yearly Conference that this year was dedicated to ‘Forge inclusive partnerships between African and Western countries to sustain peace and development’.

managers and officials from both worlds, as well as philanthropists suggested solutions to strengthen the social use of ICTs to overcome inequalities and allow everyone to benefit from the advantages offered by the digital revolution. That’s what they say: your relationship with family – blood – is stronger than any connection you’ll have with someone unrelated. Blood is thicker than water – except, perhaps, as in the new novel “Bad Men and Wicked Women” by Eric Jerome Dickey, when the blood shed is your own.

Fifty thousand dollars is a lot of money.

But that’s how much Ken Swift’s estranged daughter, Margaux, suddenly demanded of him. She claimed that it was payback for all the years he was absent. She said it was a small price to pay for abandoning her.

And then, just in case he had no plans to give her the cash, she uttered a name that he never wanted to hear again.

into his history, one that tied him to his boss, San Bernardino , who told Swift what to do and where to be. San Bernardino was why Swift put Margaux off: he had business to take care of on the swanky side of town.

Richard Garrett owed somebody some money that he wasn’t paying, and Swift and his best friend, Joe Ellis, were told to take care of the problem.

But a quick visit to Garrett’s mansion opened a world of issues that Swift didn’t need. Joe Ellis, an “instigator” and woman-magnet, flirted with Garrett’s wife, which spun Garrett into a rage. Though Garrett promised to have the money to San Bernardino by that night, Ken Swift sensed that that wasn’t the last they’d see of him.

was threatening to take the secret name to the police. Margaux’s mother was back in the States from Africa , and Swift realized that he was still in love with Jimi Lee. All this made him forget his girlfriend’s birthday, and Rachel Redman was threatening to return to her Russian lover. Swift was up to his neck in women with problems – a neck that was stuck far enough out to be vulnerable to attack…

One strong indicator of a good book is how eager you are to return it. “Bad Men and Wicked Women” surely fills that bill.

Don’t expect that feeling immediately, though. Author Eric Jerome Dickey takes his time getting to the point here; there’s plenty of fluff-dialogue in this tale that doesn’t do much but fill pages, and some that screams “TMI.” We don’t, for instance, need several pages on one character’s intestinal problems.

What we do need is action, and it arrives in a page-turning fury that handily douses the superfluousness that precedes it. Its presence is like getting your back scratched: it puts you in a mood and you don’t want it to end. Indeed, larger-thanlife scenarios are near-hallmarks in a Dickey novel, and nobody does them better.

Yes, there’s trash, flash, and violence in this book but you shouldn’t be surprised. You wouldn’t want it any other way, in fact, because “Bad Men and Wicked Women” is thick with thrills.
