R&B Soulful Singer, Fantasia, Returns To Her Gospel Roots to Sing At McDonald’s Gospelfest 2017

he 35th Annual McDonald’s Gospelfest returns to the Prudential Center (25 Lafayette Street, Newark, NJ) on Saturday, May 13 for the gospel event of the year. On Thursday, March 30, McDonald’s announced the Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter Fantasia was just added to the star studded lineup.

Fantasia is remembered and highly regarded as one of American Idol’s most shining stars. The soulful R&B singer will be taking it back to her Gospel roots at McDonald’s Gospelfest 2017. EAST HARLEM SENIORS STRUT THEIR STUFF IN CARTER BURDEN’S FASHION SHOW

acy’s and Elizabeth Arden Provide BehindThe-Scenes ‘Make Overs’ The Carter Burden Center for the Aging, one of New York’s oldest and most respected aging services organizations, hosted its annual Fashion Show to the delight of attendees and participants alike. For one special day, more than 20 senior citizens transformed into runway models and took to the catwalk at the Leonard Covello Senior Program in East Harlem.

The models were treated to an authentic backstage makeover experience made possible by a generous corporate partnership with Macy’s. More than

20 Macy’s volunteers applied make-up donated by Elizabeth Arden, styled the seniors’ hair, and helped coordinate logistics to create a professional fashion show experience.

The seniors strutted the runway dressed to the nines in their finest formal wear,

jewelry, and accessories, as well as traditional ethnic clothing with Chinese and African flair. Several of the models also wore outfits that they personally designed and sewed onsite at the Macy’s Creative Arts Center, a sponsored program at Covello center.

an anyone afford to buy a home in Harlem? For most low to moderate income families the obvious answer is a resounding no! Are community residents being effectively priced out of Harlem? Again, the obvious answer is yes! So, what actions can low to moderate income families take to purchase a home in Harlem? Housing values in Harlem are very high.

This is a problem for first time home buyers and there is not a quick solution available.

Here are some points to take into consideration when preparing for the home buying process.

(1) Attend the Home Buyer Education Workshop. This is the best place to start for prospective first time buyers. You

need to understand the home buying process, how to assemble a team of professionals to assist you in making your purchase, how much you can comfortably afford to spend on a home, and learn available grant programs and terminology related to the industry. The main goal of the workshop is to learn about the process and to avoid making costly mistakes.

(2) Do not get a higher pre-approval amount than you can afford. I was recently working with a perspective home buyer with a low to moderate income earning about $40,000. She had received a pre-approval for over 12 times her annual income for almost $490,000!

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan). The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz. Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santiago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly

discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works. “The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains. The result is a captivating piece representing daily events and life on the islands through an audiovisual language.

Each video carries its own story and speaks to daily life and the traditional myths engrained in Caribbean culture.“Beatriz produces compelling images that provoke new interpretations on the realities of the Caribbean experience,” explains PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.

In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her approach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities. Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

A BRONX TALE: GREAT ENTERTAINMENT WITH A PROFOUND MESSAGE Exclusive interview with Athan Sporek: a young actor with a shiny future

et on the stoops of the Bronx in the 1960s, underlined by an original and captivating doo-wop score (Alan Menken), this is the story told by a 9 year old Calogero (Hudson Loverro / Athan Sporek ) torn between the love for his father, a modest but honest bus driver (Richard Blake) and a mob boss he admires (Nick Cordero).

Growing up Calogero (Bobby Conte Thornton) has to face another difficult choice between Jane (Ariana Debose) a beautiful black girl he falls in love with and the strong opposition of their friends and families. Every choice you make has a consequence you cannot underestimate...are you prepared to accept it? This is the timely message of this beautiful, true story written and originally performed by Chazz Palminteri and directed by Robert De Niro. After the show I had a conversation with young but talented Athan Sporek, whose grandmother started 45 years ago the Vicky Simegiatos Performing Arts Center in Bay Ridge still owned by his parents.

Q. You have a few important roles under your belt already. Congratulations! When and how you discovered your passion and talent for theatre and singing?

A. I always remember singing and loving music from when I was really young, but I didn’t know I had a passion for it until I was cast in Les Miserables. I was 7 years old then so I didn’t have any theater experience or really know what theater was about. Les Mis was my introduction. The music was so interesting and dramatic to me so I became very passionate about it without even realizing it. Also, my manager, Lauren Singer, knew be10 fore me and my family that I would

have a career in theater so she encouraged my parents to take me to auditions. If it weren’t for Lauren I would probably still just be singing around the house and never have these amazing experiences that made me realize my passion.

Q. Which role have you loved the most and which did you find most difficult?

A. That’s a really hard question.

Young C is a very exciting role for me because I get to sing, dance and act onstage for a long time. I also had the chance to meet the real life Calogero, Chazz Palminteri, which makes it really special. Knowing that this is his true story also makes it so important to me. Gavroche (les Miserables) will always be so special in my heart because it was my first role ever and it was such an amazing and unforgettable experience for me. The people I met and still keep in touch with introduced me to this world and I will always remember that.

Even though Young C involves more choreography, lines and music, I think I have to say Gavroche was most difficult because I was so young and new at this. I was tiny so even climbing the barricade was a challenge, but it was awesome.

Q. How did you get and how did you prepare for your role as Young Calogero?

A. My mom is my coach so she helped me learn all the material. I loved the music right away.

It’s so catchy!!! My manager and agent got me an appointment with

Tara Rubin casting. After the first audition, it was a long process of many callbacks until the final one.

We had to sing, dance, and read.

The last callback was in front of the whole creative team with Jerry Zaks, Chazz Palminteri, Glenn Slater, Robert De Niro, Sergio Trujillo, and Tommy Matola. My parents explained to me that these were very important people so I did my best. I was just having so much fun during all the auditioning!

Everyone was so nice. It was the first time I had to dance something other than ballet at an audition so it was something new for me and I loved Sergio’s choreography.

Q. According to you what is the play about and what is the message?

A. It’s the story of a 9 year old who sees a crime but doesn’t tell the police what he saw. That’s how he meets Sonny, the guy who committed the crime. Sonny helps C discover a whole other world outside of his family. Then, as he’s growing up he has to make different choices in his life that his real father, and Sonny try to guide him in. They don’t agree on anything most of the time and they give him different advice so this confuses Calogero as he tries to find himself.

I think some strong messages are about how important the choices are that we make in life, about the love of family, showing loyalty and respect to people, and the importance of not following others and listening to your heart. The strongest message in the story is about not wasting your talent so that you can be the best you can possibly be in this world.

Q. You think Young Calogero did the right thing not to tell the police what he saw?

A. It’s hard to say. For some rea-

son, he felt it was the right thing to do at that moment because he felt a connection to Sonny or something.

I don’t think he felt fear... Maybe he felt sorry for Sonny? Maybe he saw something good in Sonny’s eyes?

I don’t think it was fear though.

Young C wasn’t scared...In the play I say to my dad Lorenzo, “I thought I did a good thing, but now I’m not so sure, dad.” I don’t think C even knows why he didn’t tell on Sonny.

He’s trying to figure out right from wrong throughout his whole story.

Now he’s all grown up in real life and definitely figured it out and didn’t waste his talent!

Paul Revere Williams Architect to the Stars and the Common Man

aul Revere Williams was born on February18, 1894 and died on January 23, 1980.

He was orphaned at four years old. Growing up with an abundance of artistic talent, Paul Revere Williams pursued a career that everyone, except his foster mother, told him he could not succeed in because of his race. Surely he did in fact experience racism but it did not stop him from pursuing his dreams.

Paul Revere Williams turned racial barriers into challenges to be mastered. For instance, he learned to draw buildings upside down to accommodate clients that did not want to sit beside him because of his race, preferring to sit across from him. His charm and grace added to his victory over racial barriers.

He was extremely talented, dignified, well spoken, well educated, and had an inner wisdom about people and what they needed from an architectural project. He had become famous and organized his own firm by the 1940s.

and banks, a total of 3,000 structures in all. Williams had won his first architectural prize at age 25, served on the first Los Angeles City Planning Commission throughout the 1920s, joined the AIA (American Institute of Architects) in 1923, and won the AIA Award of Merit in 1939. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity voted him Man of the Year in 1951. During World War II he worked for

the Navy as an architect. He won many awards and was granted multiple Honorary Degrees and most importantly, became the first African American to be inducted into the AIA College of Fellows in 1957. While racism was at a peak in America, Paul Revere Williams’ talent, personality and public service broke through racial barriers.

though a legendary architect, her grandfather never brought his fame, his racial challenges or any of his work home - in fact she said he was just “grandpa” and it was in school that she learned of his fame. Having experienced being an orphan, family life was most important to him and it’s understandable that he would be passionate about putting family first.

Paul Revere Williams also designed the mansion seen in the television shows Murder She Wrote and Dynasty. Williams was sought after for his ability to create comfort and ambiance of elegance via interior design as well as exteriors that were stately yet welcoming. Williams was as detailed with the common man as he was with the wealthy. He even designed a “pattern” book for affordable houses when men coming home from the war wanted to build homes for their families. He designed public housing with the same care he used to design mansions. Mr. Williams received many posthumous honors but this year, 2017, he will be recognized and posthumously given the AIA Gold Medal of Honor. What a career, what a life!

The Marketing of Wellness

T

he “Wellness Guru” Paul Zane Piltzer predicted the growth of the wellness industry more than two decades ago. In 1999 Piltzer’s best-selling book “The Wellness Revolution” made the food and healthcare industries responsible for the fact that more than half of the U.S. population were unhealthy and overweight. It is

for this reason Piltzer’s book focused on the then emerging wellness industry that he said was ready to occupy the next trillion of the economy.

Currently, over one trillion dollars of the United States economy is devoted to the wellness industry. A recent McKinsey research report states that the North American Market for Alternative Medicine alone was 16.4 billion. The report said that 96% of American adults use the internet to find health information, and a large percentage has become open to alternative

medicine and holistic wellness options.

Three years ago I began producing Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (HHWW). This annual event traditionally starts on the last Saturday in April and ends on the first Saturday in May. The two major objectives of the week are to first provide a marketing platform for Harlem wellness practitioners, businesses and organizations in particular and wellness businesses in general.

The second objective is to provide an awareness campaign that encourages indi-

viduals to explore the many wellness programs and activities that can improve their health and quality of life naturally. The dates for this year’s Harlem wellness week are Saturday April 29 to Saturday May 6.

This year’s theme is “Discovering Wellness Options for Women.”

Participating wellness businesses, practitioners and organizations will be asked to focus and market services and products that provide natural health options to females. A major feature this year will be the promo-

ear Alma, I’m in my 50’s, twice divorced, with no children. I have a demanding job that keeps me busy and seriously disrupts my social life. I’ve been dating a man I met in the office. Things are going really well and we agreed to take the next step and meet each other’s family.

When we met my family all went well. We recently attended one of his family gatherings. While there, I met his sister. He loves his sister and they have a really close relationship.

Here’s the issue: after we met and he walked away, she was really mean to me and implied that I was not her brother’s type of wom-

If he proposes and marriage is in your future, then it’s time for the discussion.

Again, don’t mention his sister specifically, just confide and confirm with each other that neither family members nor outsiders are ever welcome to impede or deliver any ‘ish that could potentially come between the two of you. Something tells me, he won’t be surprised by the conversation.

Seems to me she’s worried that the relationship she has with her brother will change, if he has a special woman in his life.

That’s a conversation that should take place between him and her, not you and her. Clearly, she’s got it twisted. I don’t think this is her first sister-brother rodeo, so there’s no need to worry right now. However, before you say “I do,” you need to let her know her cowgirl clowning ain’t never gonna be welcome in your barnyard of blessed assurance!

Lifelong Learners and Course Auditing Columbia provides scholarships for 50 residents of Manhattanville Houses, Grant Houses, and the local community who are 65 years of age and older to audit up to two courses per year. Administered through the School of Professional Studies, the Lifelong Learners Program is designed for individuals committed to the principles of lifelong education.

The University also funds up to 50 courses per year for 25 residents of Manhattanville and Grant Houses and 25 residents of the local community. This program provides adults not currently enrolled in college with the opportunity to attend up to two lectures drawn from the arts and sciences.

Since there is limited space available to auditors, seats are taken on a first-come, first-served basis once registration is open.
