The Links of Greater New York Host Annual Spring Luncheon

T

he Links Inc. honored women dedicated to making their communities better places at their annual awards luncheon.

The nonprofit hosted its 67th annual “Women of Distinction Spirit Awards, Luncheon and Fashion Show,” which honored Henri G. Moore, the Global Leader for Community Investment and president of the DuPont Pioneer Foundation, along with Miko Branch, the founder, and CEO of Ms. Jessie’s LLC, a hair care product line.

“How fitting it is to celebrate 67 years of the New York Chapter!” Links National president Dr. Glenda Newell-Harris said. “It

is a special treat to be here with these fabulous women. Those are women on the move!”

Rounding out the honorees were Marilyn F. Booker, managing director and head of Morgan Stanley’s Urban Markets Group and Wellesley College president Dr. Paula A. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson said that The New York Links award was especially important given that she is a native New Yorker.

“It is wonderful to be recognized by my home city,” the president said.

She called The Links’ “engaged, passionate women whose values I share.”

Several hundred men and women donned their

spring best to turn out for the luncheon, awards ceremony and fashion show April 15 at Pier 60 inside Chelsea Piers. The event raised more than $31,000 - well past its fundraising goal of $12,000 - the proceeds of which will go towards The Link’s community service programs, services and scholarships.

“We are so very proud of you and what you do,” Natalie H. Fanta, The Links’ eastern area director told the honorees.

“Blessings to you in the work that you do, touching the lives of people on the way.”

The event brought out the likes of former NYC Mayor David Dinkins, State Sen. Inez Dickens, Rep. Yvette Clarke, state

The weekend event also showcased the people who benefit from The Links’ resources, like Johura Mumin, who the nonprofit awarded a scholarship to attend the City University of New York’s Institute of Technology. Mumin thanked The Links and

said that the group had made a positive impact n her life.

“The Links served as role models,” the student said, “and showed me a new way of life.”

Following a luncheon that included Mediterranean shrimp tapas and glazed cranberry chicken, guests got an eyeful of the newest fashion creations from designers Tracy Re-

ese and Kevin Hall.

As she accepted her award, Booker reminded the guests that they have to be engaged when it comes to creating opportunities in the financial world.

“We have to be there,” Booker said. “We have to be a voice. It’s about economic empowerment. If we’re not a part of the mix, it’s broken. Let’s work together.”

hen preparing to apply for a mortgage, there are some common mistakes prospective first time home buyers need to avoid.

These mistakes can prevent you from successfully completing the closing process.

During a recent conversation, several loan officers shared with me some horrible mistakes people make that have caused their mortgage application to be denied towards the very end of the application process.

Until you have signed the closing documents and have received the keys to your property you have not completed the process.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you proceed to

the completion of the process: (1) do not open any new credit accounts or make any additional large purchases until after you have closed on the purchase of your property.

Every time you make a purchase your debt to income ratio (DTI) will be affected. If your DTI exceeds 43% you can be denied a mortgage.

(2) If possible do not change jobs or vocational careers until after you have closed on your home.

Lenders want to see a minimum of 24 consecutive months of work history. If you have changed careers you will need 24 months in the new position before getting approval for your mort-

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan).

The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz. Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico.

Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santiago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works.

“The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains.

The result is a captivating piece representing daily events and life on the islands through an audiovisual language.Each video carries its own story and speaks to daily life and the traditional myths engrained in Caribbean culture.“Beatriz produces compelling images that provoke new interpretations on the realities of the Caribbean experience,” explains PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.

In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her approach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities.

Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

Beatriz Santiago Muñoz: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors is the third exhibition of El Museo’s five-year series highlighting Latina artists.

El Museo del Barrio’s Women Artists Retrospective Series In recognizing the historical exclusion of women from the art professions, which has directly contributed to an international museum culture predisposed to male artists, El Museo del Barrio is resolved to challenge this gender bias, within our means and within our walls, by organizing a retrospective or major survey of works by outstanding women artists—one in each fiscal year.

Dress for Success Annual Gala pulls at heart strings while raising funds

Some of the attendees included Dress for Success Founder Nancy Lublin, 2016 Miss USA Deshauna Barber, Dress for Success Worldwide CEO Joi Gordon, Grammy Award-winning singer Estelle, and makeup artist Jay Manuel.

The event started with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Some of the items in the auction included lunch at Hearst with Gayle King, lunch with Nicole Miller at NYC Showroom, and Pandora Jewelry Timeless Elegance Collection.

Pandora also gave every attendee a pair of earrings and Southwest Airlines gifted one attendee per table a voucher for a free trip to anywhere they fly. Unfortunately, I was not one of the winners!

I spoke with a few of the celebrity guests on the red carpet about what it means to dress for success. Deshauna Barber said “what you’re wearing reflects how

you feel on the inside.” Jay Manuel of America’s Next Top Model fame spoke from a unique perspective from someone who has thrived in the fashion industry, and donated clothing to Dress for Success. “I think it’s very important to put your best foot forward.”

The most heartfelt words came from two speakers that night: Dress for Success CEO Gordon and Dress for Success Ambassador Tammy Jo Johnson.

Gordon revealed that a year ago at the 2016 Dress for Success Gala she was battling cancer, but by the grace of God has overcome it. Her emotional words in-

cluded thank you’s to her husband for helping with the big and little things, like drawing her eyebrows on every morning, and her staff. If you are unaware, the Publisher of the paper, Pat Stevenson is battling cancer, and like Joi Gordon, we look forward to sharing her success in the future.

Johnson inspired many tears in the audience when she discussed overcoming sexual abuse and a failed suicide attempt that killed her Mom and landed her in jail as a youth. Johnson’s story is proof that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. Most of us would think those are circumstances that we couldn’t recover from, but she is, speaking to a room

full of people and inspiring others.

Harlem Holistic Wellness Week April 29 – May 6

he theme for the 4th annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week awareness campaign (April 29 – May 6) is “Discovering Natural Wellness Options for Women”. A few weeks after coming up with this theme I was introduced to the “Now We No” feminine hygiene awareness campaign produced by Nspire Network(www. nspirenetwork.com), an online wellness company.

I was sent a video describing the potential danger that females face every month due to the exposure of toxic chemical ingredients and dyes found in the leading brands of sanitary napkins. I must admit that this issue was not something on my radar, but after talking about this

subject with other women I became aware that many women were not aware that they play Russian roulette with their bodies every month, and many who were aware did not have many options.

The Now We No awareness campaign not only provides awareness of potential dangers, it also provides a solution with the all-natural Cherish premium sanitary napkin products. I have a 14 year old daughter and three granddaughters and a network of friends and relatives that I wanted to know about this and the upcoming wellness week will serve as a great vehicle to get this very important message out.

ummer is right around the corner!!

That’s right; it is time to pull out all the warm weather clothing that we reluctantly packed away last September. Finally the opportunity to wear all the sexy sleeveless tops, flirty dresses, skirts and who could forget . . . swimsuits, shorts and sandals. Warmer weather means baring a bit more skin than usu-

al, which means that it’s also time to think about looking your best. Face it; there isn’t a tan you can get or sexy dress you could wear that will make up for winter’s wear and tear on your body. If you have already prepared for summer then enjoy, but if you haven’t it is time to do a little housekeeping! Before you bare anything at all take a quick inventory of some of the things that bear (sorry, couldn’t resist) consideration: Hair Patrol: Hair on your head is a good thing, but hair coming out of unexpected places like your bikini line, the top of your toes, legs, or cascading from your armpits (depending, of course on your personal preferences) may not be desired. If you choose to remove it,

there are several methods of removal that you might want to think about using to get rid of it: shaving, depilatorizing, or waxing; choose a method that works best for you, but whatever you do . . . if you think you need it; do something!

Nail It: Face it; if you want a “well manicured look” getting manicured is essential. Nothing says more about you than your hands and feet; nothing will ruin your look faster than crusty heels, jagged cuticles, overgrown toe nails or peeling polish!

Since summer is an opportunity to expose those toes, take time to pamper your feet. Give your hands a break too. A weekly professional manicure and bi-weekly pedicure is a must but. If your budget

can’t handle the expense do it yourself. If you don’t have the time or inclination to maintain your hands and feet; do everyone a favor and use clear polish and wear pumps instead of mules or sandals.

Protect and Buff: Nothing feels better in the summer than the warmth of the sun on your skin.

By now we all know how important it is to protect the skin we’re in by using sunscreen religiously but also important is moisturizing. Before you really expose your skin to the elements, be sure that you use an exfoliating scrub to remove any dry skin that may have accumulated under those heavy winter wraps. Pay special attention to your feet, elbows and knees and then apply your favorite moisturizer

for a soft touch.

Eye, Eye: That’s right; your eyes deserve special attention too! Protect those peepers with a good and fashionable pair of sunglasses to protect them from the sun’s glare.

Caution: There is such a thing as too much exposure. Unless you are at a nude beach, baring it all isn’t necessary. Leaving a little something to the imagination has been known to inspire artists and poets throughout the ages. So instead of letting it all hang out this summer . . . Inspire someone instead. 2 CAN DO TIP #2 - 2017 Get Hip to Solutions for Musculoskeletal Pain! – Part 1 During a fitness session with one of my clients last week, I could tell she was feeling a little discomfort due to nagging pain and tightness in her hip and lower back. I instructed her to lie down on her back with her knees facing the ceiling. Since the issue was her left hip, I guided her to draw her left knee up towards her chest, and hold in place

with both arms wrapped around her knee; this was the first step to begin warming up her hip flexors.

Next, I instructed her to place the outside of her left ankle on the front of her right knee and to breathe in deeply and exhale fully, 6-8 times as she gently pressed down on the inside of her left knee. She continued to press down gently, released and breathed until the wince of her brow melted into a faint smile across her face.

Keeping her ankle in place on her right knee, the final step was to slowly lift her right foot off of the mat a few inches so that both

legs were now elevated, deepening the stretch in her left hip and pelvic muscles. Here’s the key: I told her to practice this step daily so that the muscle imbalances surrounding her hip, hamstrings and glutes would begin to adjust.

The next morning she called me to say and I quote with permission: “You have the magic touch! My hip has not felt this good in months. I am in absolute awe.
