“TRANSFERRING KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGIES: THE WAY TO COMBAT POVERTY AND MAKE THE WORLD SAFER“ is the title of this 17th edition of the IWC, organized by OCCAM (Observatory for Cinema, Culture and Audiovisual) which will take place on Friday April 21st in the UN Headquarters in NYC. Since 2001 we discuss and present the most innovative solutions and the best practices elaborated with the United Nations system, governments and the civil society, to empower the fight against poverty. On the wave of the proclamation of the Millennium Development Goals, the IWC constitutes, for its continuity, operational capability and strong interoperability with the UN system, a unique global forum. We gather leading experts, academics, opinion leaders, managers, government officials as well as philanthropists. The IWC has given rise to the Infopoverty Programme, which promotes and realizes on the ground actions using the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as tools of development. Specifically we have created the UN Millennium Village in Sambaina (Madagascar) and ICT Villages in Honduras, South Lebanon, Navajo Nation and Ethiopia.

This has led to the launch of two institutions which serve as a model for new practices: e-MedMed (Medecine) and the World Food Security e-Center, capable of providing directly to communities in need Telemedicine, eLearning, e-Training and e-agriculture services through a global digital platform. After seventeen years of work and practical engagement in cooperation with the main stakeholders of the digital revolution worldwide, we are committed to find and apply easier, low-cost and adequate solutions to meet the real needs of people with smart technologies. Everyday innovations create different scenarios and opportunities. The greater global connectivity made possible by the spreading of mobile phones and smartphones is changing intimately people’s life, reshaping communities, governance, and social relationships. As the Observatory for digital revolution, OCCAM, focuses the debate’s

attention on the high inequality of ICT innovations which are generally tailored to wealthy end-users’ markets rather than to social growth. Thus doing we are failing to offer solutions to fight poverty, hunger, health and to achieve universal education as stated by SDGs, cornerstone of the Infopoverty Programme. Our main goal is to demonstrate, via concrete facts and best practices, that digital services tailored to address the socio-economic development needs of the most disadvantaged populations can lead to relevant results in terms of economic sustainability, health, food security, education, climate change, etc. It is of crucial importance for us to learn to think digital, which means to require clarity, transparency, effectiveness, active participation, community spirit, creativity and fellowship beyond borders and across cultures. We want to develop human resources thanks to a massive transfer of technologies and knowledge, enabling the creation of wealth for communities. Any simple smartphone is a potential tool for selfdevelopment and job creation.

CON EDISON MANAGER FROM MOUNT VERNON HONORED WITH YMCA BLACK ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

A

longtime Con Edison manager from Mount Vernon, N.Y. has earned a prestigious recognition from the YMCA for her contributions to the energy company.

Michelle Anderson-Loague, a section manager in

Facilities & Field Services, is a 2017 winner of the YMCA National Black Achievers in Industry Award.

“I’ve been lucky to work on projects with great, talented colleagues,” she said.

“I hope my work has contributed to our providing the best service possible for our

customers.”

Anderson-Loague, who works out of Con Edison’s Westchester County headquarters in Rye, is working on several large-scale renovation and remodeling projects.

During her nearly sixyear tenure as a section

manager in Customer Operations, she oversaw a massive effort to automate payment processing in the walk-in centers. The new process resulted in thousands of dollars in annual savings.

In all, she has spent 17 years with Con Edison.

The BAI Award was founded at the Harlem YMCA in 1971 and is now a national project with thousands of recipients. Anderson-Loague recently received her award at a dinner in Manhattan attended by other awardees from around the country.

NEW PACS FOCUS ON GETTING MORE BLACKS INTO POLITICS

n the aftermath of former-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s crushing defeat last November, a number of groups were launched to encourage greater political participation among young people, women and minorities.

Recently, the Milk River PAC hosted a dialogue on the impact of women in politics that featured Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) and political commentator Ana Navarro. “PAC” is a common acronym for political action committee, an independent group that raises money to support candidates and issues related to their constituents.

The goal of Milk River PAC is to inspire more African American women to run for Congress. Along with The Collective, Democracy in Color, and Higher Heights, the Milk River PAC is another effort focused on galvanizing support behind people of color running for office.

Milk River PAC and Higher Heights are specifically focused on Black women. Black women voted at higher rates than any other demographic group in America during the 2008 presidential election cycle.

Harnessing that political power is one of the many challenges that the groups hope to address at a time when Republicans control the United States Congress, the White House and most state legislatures.

The specific goal of Higher Heights is to “identify, educate, and engage Black women across the socio-economic spectrum to elect Black women, influence elections and move public policy.”

During the discussion hosted by Milk River PAC with Rep. Clarke and Navarro, issues around the changing demographics in America and the impact of Black women in politics were the main focus.

According to demographic trends and national poll predictions, former-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton should have easily defeated real estate mogul Donald Trump. Clinton won the popular vote by 2.8 million votes, but lost the Electoral College vote (227-304), sending Donald Trump to the White House.

new Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez asked for all staffers currently at the DNC to hand in their resignations. A massive re-organization is expected after Perez barely won the DNC chairmanship over progressive challenger Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.).

For years, members of the Congressional Black Caucus and others have challenged the DNC on its lack of hiring of Black vendors and consultants as the party continued to use the same consultants and staff against a backdrop of historic losses over the last ten years.

The Indivisible Movement, started by former congressional staffers, has risen to re-energize civic engagement in the wake of President Donald Trump’s election, in the same way

the Republican Tea Party rose to power following President Obama’s election in 2008. Town halls focused on health care and the direction President Trump is taking policy have given rise to efforts to focus on the next major set of federal elections in 2018.

But there are also several test races coming up that should provide a clue as to whether the recent energy among Democrats and others who oppose President Trump’s agenda is real.

It appears that no low to moderate income individual or family can afford to purchase a home in Harlem. This is becoming a huge problem for Harlem residents who are committed to owning a home in their community.

This is the new reality facing prospective first time Harlem home buyers. Expect to have a great deal of money saved if you are to successfully complete your purchase. Consider this fact even if you get a government-backed Federal

Now until April 30, 2017 Exhibit: BEATRIZ SANTIAGO MUÑOZ: A Universe of Fragile Mirrors El Museo del Barrio announces the exhibition A Universe of Fragile Mirrors, a solo exhibition on the work of Beatriz Santiago Muñoz(b. 1972, San Juan, Puerto Rico; lives in San Juan). The exhibition is organized by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and curated by María Elena Ortiz. Through a series of films and videos, A Universe of Fragile Mirrors captures the ironies of post-colonial conditions in the Caribbean—specifically in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Focusing on indigenous cosmologies, post-military spaces, and syncretic religions from the Caribbean, Santiago Muñoz borrows techniques from performance, film, visual ethnography, and anthropology, to document specific communities and public sites in order to generate her own bricolage -an alternative story about a popular Haitian market, or a newly discovered archeological site in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit will consist of films on continuous play, portraying Santiago Muñoz’s own interpretation of the realities in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Influenced by experimental cinema, she relies on observational research to generate non-linear narratives that challenge the boundaries between documentary and fiction. Santiago Muñoz’s characters are not professional actors, but instead everyday people who have direct experiences with the sites portrayed in her works. “The process is more experiential,”Santiago Muñoz explains. The result is a captivating piece representing daily events and life on the islands through an audiovisual language.

Each video carries its own story and speaks to daily life and the traditional myths engrained in Caribbean

culture.“Beatriz produces compelling images that provoke new interpretations on the realities of the Caribbean experience,” explains PAMM Curator María Elena Ortiz.

In addition, El Museo has invited Santiago Muñoz to explore El Museo’s collection of over 8,000 objects and select a group of works that connect to her ideas,her films, her approach to making art and other real or symbolic affinities. Acting as curator, Santiago Muñoz has selected works from the permanent collection that include Hector Mendez-Caratini’s photographs of Taino petroglyphs, Ana Mendieta’s polaroids of her performance Body Tracks, a selection of destroyed film works by El Museo’s founder Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and works by Nuyorican artists including Marcos Dimas.

Altulga, the Harlem Record’s Guy

l ( aka Altulga) grew up listening to his father’s records. He was only nine when he named his first dog after Led Zeppelin. As a teen, he was introduced to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Lee Morgan. His passion for collecting records started when he was in Istanbul. In the 1980s, when CDs were the “new kid on the block,” he was on his way to the USA collecting abandoned records because of the CD’s presence in the music market. He discovered the Salvation Army, thrift shops, and Goodwill, where he initially bought his records. His knowledge

made him famous, as he was able to identify the rarest records within the sellers’ collection. This ability made his name heard abroad and created a clientele in Europe and South America.

As the “record guy “in Harlem, he bought and traded over thousands of records.

You can find him in

an apartment in Harlem or Washington Heights, sipping coffee and talking to 80-yearold jazz enthusiasts about music or sorting records with street vendors in the Bronx.

Altulga’s motivation to look for records every day is his passion for meeting people. “What are the odds of meeting

a 90-year-old lady who

has been running marathons since she was 60 and meet a famous Latino jazz player in one single day?”

Altulga’s extensive record collection consists of jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, rock and soul music. “As long as I live, I will be on the lookout for a record. Each and every one I see and touch is valuable to me.” Altulga

has huge respect for each collection and each person he meets. Every day is a new adventure for him and the records are the language he communicates with people.

Harlem Holistic Wellness Week 2017

here are many reasons for the tremendous growth in the desire by many to address their health by using natural holistic wellness strategies.

Many believe that it is due to the growth of the baby boomers quest for longevity; others see it as being a way to address the concern about the long term negative effects of man-made drugs. I agree with the popular thought that a greater number of people are now experiencing the

quality of life benefits in learning to balance mind, body and spirit.

Harlem Holistic Wellness Week 2017 (Saturday April 29 to Saturday May 6 ) is a vehicle to bring those who would like to explore natural holistic ways to improve the quality of their lives with the practitioners, programs and businesses that offer natural holistic wellness options.

Thousands of people in over 70 countries celebrate the collective mind of wellness and peace annually on the last Saturday in April during world Tai Chi and Qigong Day (www.worldtaichiday. org).

The 10th annual Harlem World Tai Chi and Qigong Day celebration is tradition-

ally the first event of Harlem Holistic Wellness Week, this year on Saturday April 29.

The event will start at 10am to coincide with tens of thousands of people throughout the world who will also start energy movement exercises at the same time; with a collective mind focused on world peace. The opening event will take place in Saint Nicholas Park located at 135th Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue.

Tai Chi, Qigong and energy treatment masters will give free demonstrations and treatments again this year. If you are interested in learning about energy training programs, this event will provide a wonderful opportunity to speak to energy movement

kay, I’ve talked about implementing a self-re-improvement program, stressed the importance of checkups, exercise and changing your eating habits, but I haven’t spoken about “spring cleaning.”

Here in New York where I live, everyone is enjoying the fact

that winter is now officially gone. You see, spring signals the beginning of our summer season! Traditionally, spring means the renewal of nature: flowers start to bloom, trees sprout new shiny green leaves, the birds start to sing again, etc . . .

If you live in a warmer climate, I know that during your “winter” flowers still bloom, birds always sing and trees are basically green and your climate, warm. Regardless of where we live, everyone looks forward to some kind of “renewal” right about now. I’d like to suggest some “spring cleaning” ideas that have nothing to do with closets—so put your brooms down.

They say that soon everyone, not just the “techies”, will do everything from home: See first run movies, grocery shop, go to school. All of this will be very convenient but artificial and won’t get you out to enjoy nature and smell the roses.

So before we get to that stage, bring nature into your home.

Attach flower boxes outside your windows so that you can enjoy the flowers both from inside and out, as well as their fragrance when you open the windows.

Parents, have you thought about “spring cleaning” your kids?

No, don’t put them out, but get them hyped now for summer camp or other activities—

where they can have their own sense of renewal. Whether it’s a day camp, overnight or sleep-away; this is not only an opportunity to give them breathing space away from you, but to also treat yourself to a break. You could also inspire their social consciousness by working with them to select a non-profit camp for children with special needs (i.e. foster children, kids with debilitating illnesses), and have them contribute a portion of their allowance to help others have a wonderful summer experience.

You can also “spring clean” your “I would do it, but I don’t have time” wish list. Purge that list by doing what-

ever it is that you keep putting off: finishing school, taking a trip or learning something new. There is no renewal like the spiritual lift one gets from doing those things that enhance your life.

Either way, there isn’t a one-size-fitsall way for everyone to renew themselves through “spring cleaning”. But there is a way that fits you—find it by dusting off the cobwebs of your daily routine and really look at what will rejuvenate you . . . then after you’ve identified what that “thing” is, to quote a famous slogan: “Just do it.” Think about it.

ow that Resurrection Sunday has come and gone has there been a resurrection in your life? Have you restated and reaffirmed your priorities in life? How about your relationships with family members?

Have you made a concerted effort to delete those folks in your world that are counter-productive to your vision? If not, then you are still in the tomb.

There were plenty of Good Friday services to attend. The evolution of the Seven Last Words, to the Seven Last Sayings of Christ from the Cross, was

a wonderful transition. I still noticed some institutions announcing the seven last words, but one day they’ll understand.

Ambassador Johnson-Cook reminded and invited us all to the Henry Street Methodist Church on John Street for the 35th Anniversary of the Wednesday Noontime prayer service. I was with Rev. Johnson-Cook when she began the lunchtime service on John Street. There were more folks in worship on Wednesday than some Sunday morning congregations had. The noonday participants were workers in the

Wall Street area who needed that spiritual midweek refill. Congratulation to Rev. Sujay!

The Pentecostal Baptist Church will have a revival from April 19-21. Rev. Casper Niles is the Pastor.

Too Blessed to be Stressed: Holy Medicine for the Soul at Lunchtime

T

he Thursday headline in some of the local papers was about how STRESSED out New Yorkers are. This is no secret, and it seems the stress is only mounting— that is, except at lunchtime, Thousands of New Yorkers have made their way to the historic Old John Street Church, the oldest Church in Methodism, at lunchtime for their weekly “dose” of good news.

Holy Thursday noon, hundreds gathered again, at The John Street church, to celebrate 35 years of bringing inspiration at lunchtime, and honor the founder and creator of these services, the Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, former US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, under President Obama, who is turning 60. President Bill Clinton joined her to celebrate her 50th, and now, hundreds are coming back for a “re-union” for the Soul.

35 years ago, while finishing Union Theological Seminary, the Rev. Suzan Johnson, as she was known then, was called as the first Black woman in the 200 year history of the American Baptist Churches, USA, to be the Senior Pastor of the Mariners Temple Baptist church, a fledgling Black Church located

in New York’s Chatham Square and Chinatown. She was presented with few options.

In 1983, she began the LUNCH HOUR OF POWER lunchtime worship services, bringing hope and inspiration to New Yorkers who lived and worked in the area.

After just six months, l50 people were coming regularly. The Senior citizens would prepare a sandwich and Rev. Johnson would prepare a message. Word spread quickly throughout corporate America, Police Headquarters, the courts, City Hall and city agen-

cies. The congregation rapidly grew until there was an average attendance of 500. Exciting voices began appearing as the messengers of the day: Dr. Gardner C Taylor, of Concord Baptist Church, Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor of Abyssinian BC, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Mayor David Dinkins, Police Commissioner Lee P Brown, and others. A POWER HOUR choir was formed, and Harlem News columnist William DeFossett often played at the services. The NY Daily News, Newsday, the NY Times and all

the local media tv began covering this phenomenon.

The 35th anniversary celebration took place with well-wishers and celebrants, from New York to Washington DC, honoring Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, who has kept these services going, non-stop.

Now housed at the John Street United Methodist church, the oldest church in Methodism, these services were there for many, as 9/ll happened, and various transitions and events throughout the city.

Many have retired or jobs were moved, but it

kept going strong, Last FPWA’s Jennifer Jones Austin brought the message.

This week is REUNION time. Now called WONDERFUL WALL STREET WEDNESDAYS, the John Street United Methodist Church, will be “ALIVE”, Join us noon to 1 pm, 44 John Street (between Williams and Nassau, all subway lines to the Fulton Street stop). It’’ll be a lunchtime to remember!!!

This service takes a bite and the “fight” out of the big apple, Johnson Cook states.

“Finding Gideon”

I

t wasn’t where you put it down.

The last time you saw it, it was over there where you laid it. You remember doing that; you even gave yourself a brain-nudge so you wouldn’t forget but now it’s not where it should be, and that bugs you. Now, as in the new novel “Finding Gideon” by Eric Jerome Dickey, you’ll have to chase it down.

At an age when most boys are focused on their little toy cars, Jean-Claude was busy saving his mother’s life.

The French prostitute known as Thelma (or was she Margaret, or Catherine?) had crossed the wrong johns, gotten pregnant, and told

their wives. She hinted that Medianoche was a father.

She hinted that the Beast was a father. She was lying to one or both, and the Beast told Medianoche to kill her.

He was swinging Thelma around by her neck when her “snotty-nosed” seven-yearold son picked up Medianoche’s gun… and shot the assassin in the face.

That was the first man the boy gunned down. Thelma set him on the second one, too, which changed him, and made him a killer. He was a sought-after, talented assassin when he learned that Medianoche had lived, and Gideon (his professional name) knew he had to finish that long-ago job.

Medianoche hadn’t

planned on killing his best friend, but when he learned that the Beast had been lying for years about Thelma, there was no other choice. Once the Beast was gone, Medianoche could assume leadership of the Four Horsemen, the group that ruled Buenos Aires, and that’s how it always should’ve been.

But this young assassin, Gideon, complicated things.

Medianoche heard that Gideon was looking for him, to settle a dubious score. It wasn’t enough that he’d taken Medianoche’s eye, and destroyed his face.

No, Gideon was looking for Midnight, and there would be war.

Which only meant that Midnight had to find Gideon

first…

I have to admit, I spent the first thirty pages of this book hating it.

As he often seems to do, author Eric Jerome Dickey jumps feet-first into his novel by letting the characters jump feet-first into bed.

There is a bit of prelude this time, but it’s strangely fixat-

ed on dog waste before we get to tiresome erotica.

Usually, I’d recommend skipping that and starting the book several pages in, though with “Finding Gideon,” you really shouldn’t.

You need that beginning; it’s nasty, but it sets up a firstrate thriller and a surprise: this latest Gideon tale has

character development that makes many of the killers human, almost likeable.

Readers get a better understanding of who Gideon is, and what drives him. We meet his “brothers” and lovers old and new and, because this book screams toward an unsettling cliffhanger, we can only hope to see them again.

Certainly, you can read this novel alone but I’d recommend starting with Sleeping with Strangers.

The overall tale relies on it, so enjoy that book first.

Won’t be long before you’ll beg to put “Finding Gideon” in your hands.

The report further concluded that a data analysis collected in 2010 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that white children from high-income families are roughly 81 percent more likely to receive an autism diagnosis than

those from low-income Black and Hispanic families. [Wright, J., May 2016, Spectrum, Disparities in autism diagnosis may harm minority groups] While research studies have linked autism with a variety of environmental and biological factors the bottom line is that the gap in terms of early diagnosis specifically along racial and socioeconomic lines has not closed – and this is problem, considering the fact that as research has concluded, early diagnosis and intervention leads to significantly improved outcomes.
