Popular Richmond Hill Farmers’ Market Set to Return to Forest Park

By Forum Staff The Richmond Hill farmers’ market will return to Forest Park this fall, City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) announced Tuesday.

Ulrich allocated $25,000 for the popular Forest Park Farmstand, which gives residents direct access to fresh fruit and vegetables from locally-sourced farms. Situated near the Buddy Monument in Forest Park (near the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Park Lane South in Richmond Hill), the market kicks-off this Saturday, Sept. 19, and will return with social distancing/CDC guidelines every Saturday through Nov. 21, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The farmstand will offer a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, which change seasonally. During the summer months, visitors can find produce such as blueberries, peaches, carrots, garlic, cilantro, arugula, radish, mint, mushrooms, tomato and eggs. During the fall season, visitors can find produce such as celery, parsnips, peas, and eggplant. Many fruits and vegetables will be offered during both seasons.

“In 2018, we welcomed the first-ever farmers’ market to Richmond Hill and it continues

to be a major success. The Forest Park Farmstand filled a crucial void in Richmond Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods, where residents had to travel great distances to buy fresh produce,” Ulrich said. “I am thrilled to partner with GrowNYC on this project for a third year, giving residents direct access to fresh fruit and vegetables from locally-sourced

farmers—especially during these trying times.

For so many of the local residents, the return of this year’s farmstand will provide a sense of normalcy.”

portunities to synchronize benefits and identify individuals who participated in the Sept. 11 response.

Pols Urge Trump to Back NY Disaster Declaration

In their missive, the elected officials wrote to Trump, “Given the fiscal constraints already facing our state and counties prior to Tropical Storm Isaias, we urge you to promptly approve this urgently needed federal assistance by declaring this event a major disaster.�

FDNY ADDS 27 NAMES TO MEMORIAL WALL

FOR DEATHS RELATED TO WORLD TRADE CENTER ILLNESSES

The names of 27 members who died of illnesses related to their work in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall were added in a closed ceremony on Wednesday, September 9, at 4 p.m. at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.

To date more than 226 FDNY members have died of World Trade Center related illnesses. This year, due to the growing number of those who have died, and to ensure room to properly honor and remember their memories moving forward, the wall was expanded for the first time since its construction in 2011.

“Our Department made a solemn promise to never forget the bravery and sacrifice of the 343 members who gave their lives on September 11th, and the growing list of heroes who have died due to illnesses related to their courageous work throughout the rescue and recovery effort,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “Though we are unable to join in person this year to remember these 27 extraordinary individuals, we still pause to honor that promise by ensuring their memory lives on with their inclusion on our World Trade Center memorial wall.”

Wind Power Project Progressing: Addabbo

By Forum Staff State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) recently received an update from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority on the renewable energy project off the Rockaway shore—and reported that he was pleased with its progress.

NYSERDA also informed Addabbo of another solicitation for a $400 million renewable energy project—which is the largest clean energy solicitation in the nation’s history—following up on last year’s procurement of offshore wind projects, including the Empire Wind Project off the shore of the Rockaways. Included in this new procurement with the Empire Wind Project is the Sunrise Wind Project and several land-based renewable energy projects issued by NYSERDA and the New York Power Authority.

Together, the combined solicitations from NYSERDA and NYPA seek to procure more than 4,000 megawatts of clean, renewable energy, enough to power nearly 1.5 million homes.

“New York continues to lead the nation as we move towards a greener future by maximizing our renewable energy sources,” Addabbo said. “These procurements will create 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind power by 2035, enough to power six million homes, meeting the climate and environment goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.” The project will also study the impact offshore wind turbines have on marine wildlife and its effect on ocean users, such as commercial and recreational fishing. The project will provide financial and technical support to regional monitoring of wildlife and key commer-

cial fishing stocks.

As New York continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, these solicitations, combined with a competitive multi-port funding opportunity, are expected to create about $7 billion in direct investments and to create nearly 4,500 jobs, both short- and long-term. This will add a major boost to the economy, which has been suffering due to the impact of the coronavirus.

“This project will also be an economic generator for the state,” Addabbo added. “Thousands of workers will be hired to plan and construct all aspects of the project, and many more will be needed to run and maintain the facilities and wind turbines once they are operational. I look forward to working with NYSERDA and other entities towards having local residents obtain access to these job opportunities.” The senator also mentioned that the creators of this plan have pledged to work with environmental groups to study and monitor the project’s effect on wildlife and fishing.

“While Gov. Cuomo and the State work diligently to safely reopen New York’s economy, clean energy represents an optimal tool to jumpstart these activities. Our second offshore wind solicitation combined with this historic investment in the state’s port infrastructure will ensure that New York continues to be a leader in our nation-leading pursuit of offshore wind.

MTA will Issue $50 Fine for Riders who Refuse to Wear a Mask on Public Transit

By Forum Staff Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday issued an executive order directing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to develop a plan to bolster mask compliance across public transportation system’s subways, buses and railroads.

In response to this directive, the MTA announced riders who refuse to wear a mask on public transit will be subject to a $50 fine. This new measure—which went into effect Monday, Sept. 14—follows Cuomo’s Executive Order 202.18 issued on April 17 requiring all customers and employees to wear a face covering while riding on public transit.

MTA surveys show more than 90 percent of customers are using masks on subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North.

The $50 fine is the latest measure to drive mask compliance even higher. Mask compliance will be enforced by MTAPD, NYPD and Bridge and Tunnel Officers as all rules and regulations are.

“Health experts agree that wearing a mask is the single best thing we can do to limit the spread of COVID-19,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Pat Foye. “The $50 fine gives us another tool to help achieve our goal of universal mask usage on New York City Transit subways and buses, Long

The MTA has launched an aggressive public awareness campaign, “Operation Respect,” as part of a multi-layered strategy to encourage riders to wear a face covering while on public transit. The agency has made available 4 mil-

lion masks from the State of New York and City of New York available for free at station booths, across New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. Hundreds of volunteers with the MTA’s “Mask Force” are distributing these masks to riders systemwide.

“While mask compliance in the MTA system remains very high, we want to make sure that people feel comfortable coming back to public transportation” Cuomo said.

“I have asked the MTA to come up with an enforcement regimen so people know that not only are the cars clean and the stations clean, but the riders will be acting appropriately. We have to be able to say to the riding public that everyone will be wearing masks—and if they refuse to wear a mask they will be penalized.”

The agency has also deployed vending machines at New York City Transit subway, LIRR, and Metro-North stations allowing customers to buy COVID-19 personal protective equipment.

The machines, part of a pilot program, offer reusable face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes. Additionally, the MTA has installed free surgical mask dispensers inside 360 buses across 15 routes.

“We know the vast majority of New Yorkers are already doing the right thing and wearing a mask while riding with us,” said Sarah Feinberg, interim president of New York City Transit. “The fine is a last resort measure for those who refuse to comply. It’s critical that every customer does their part to keep our system safe.”

Reputed Gang Member, 15, Indicted in Kew Gardens Hotel Shooting

By Forum Staff A 15-year-old reputed gang member has been indicted by a borough grand jury for allegedly shooting and injuring a Queens Village resident moments after he stepped out of the infamous Umbrella Hotel in Kew Gardens on July 3, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Friday.

The defendant, whose status as a minor precludes The Forum from

publishing his name, is a Jamaica resident who was arraigned last week on a six-count indictment charging him with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and reckless endangerment in the first degree. The defendant is set to return to court on Sept. 25.

According to the charges, just before midnight on July 3 a 17-yearold walked through the lobby of the

Umbrella Hotel on Queens Boulevard. He passed through a crowd that included the defendant. The 17-year-old exited the building with the defendant following. Video surveillance of the scene shows the defendant allegedly pulling out a handgun and firing it several times. The victim was hit in the right leg, shattering his femur. The victim fell to the ground and rolled under a car in an attempt to hide from the shooter.

According to the DA, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital and was rushed into surgery. The alleged shooter was identified from the video surveillance and subsequently arrested the following day, Katz noted.

If convicted, the teen faces up to 10 years in prison.

Katz also noted that, unrelated to the above case, police, along with members of the DA’s Violent Criminal Enterprises Bureau, are investigating a second shooting that occurred at the hotel on Aug. 9. Reports of other alleged crimes at the hotel are being investigated as well.

“These incidents will be investigated and prosecuted with every tool available to law enforcement,” Katz said.

Ozone Park Man Charged in Shoot Slay

By Forum Staff Two borough men have been indicted by a Queens grand jury for allegedly shooting a man in the middle of a Corona street on June 30, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Monday.

Kevin Guerra, 21, of East Elmhurst, and Joshua Petillo, 23, of Ozone Park were arraigned last week on a three-count indictment charging them with murder in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Both defendants were remanded into custody and ordered to return on Nov. 5.

According to the charges, on Tuesday, June 30, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Petillo, while acting in concert with Guerra, allegedly chased 20-year-old Dante Santillan down Warren Street

in Corona. Petillo allegedly fired a single shot, hitting the Jackson Heights man in the back.

Santillan—injured and bleeding—managed to continue moving, making it to a restaurant on 40th Road where a friend drove him to an area hospital. He later died from the single gunshot wound.

“The victim in this case was running for his life when he was shot down and killed on a residential street in a senseless act of gun violence,” Katz said. “Shootings are literally leaving our streets stained with blood. I am committed to getting illegal guns off our streets and holding those who kill and injure others accountable.

The two men charged in this case will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

If convicted, Guerra and Petillo face up to 25 years to life in prison.

Cleanliness Actions Target Streets, Parks

By Forum Staff New initiatives aimed at bolstering City sanitation and street-cleanliness efforts are on the way, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.

According to the administration, the City will take three response actions to supplement current sanitation efforts: • The City will reallocate a portion of the Department of Sanitation budget to support the restoration of approximately 65 litter basket

trucks weekly in areas across the five boroughs, a 24-percent increase from current levels. These additional litter basket trucks will focus on the 27 neighborhoods citywide that have been especially impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, as well as other areas across the City that will see increased pedestrian traffic as employees return to the workplace.

• The City Economic Development Corporation will restart CleaNYC with the Doe Fund to provide supplemental cleaning services in neighborhoods and parks across the city through the end of the calendar year. This supplemental cleaning will support efforts by DSNY and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as Business Improvement Districts and other community partners. The Doe Fund provides employment, career training and social services to homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals.

• The City will partner with communitybased organizations, elected officials and the private sector to sponsor community cleanups and mobilize volunteers to collect litter on streets and in parks. The City will provide tools and logistics support to groups who host cleanups.

“Our sanitation professionals have been heroes throughout this crisis,” de Blasio said. “They deserve all the support they can get in their fight to keep New York City clean.”

Recycling Event Returns— with Major Changes

The popular recycling event returns to Forest Park on Sunday, Sept. 27.

By Forum Staff Later this month, State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) and Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven), in partnership with Community Board 9, will host their bi-annual recycling event in the Forest Park Bandshell parking lot—albeit with some major changes in tow.

This year, due to COVID-19, there will be no electronics recycling at the event.

There will still be paper shredding services through USA Shred as well as clothing and household goods donations to the United War Veterans Council.

“Unfortunately with the coronavirus pandemic affecting budget constraints, we cannot bring the e-waste recycling portion of our event to the park this fall,” Addabbo said.

In order to keep everyone safe, NYC Parks Department is requiring all participants to wear masks when in the parking lot, especially when interacting with a volunteer. Those who wish to make donations or shred their documents are also asked to stay in their vehicles as much as possible, for the safety of the staff and volunteers. Please have all items in an easily accessible part of the car, such as the backseat or trunk, to allow a volunteer to safely remove them and bring them to the proper location.

If anyone wishes to exit their car, they must fill out a visitor health screening questionnaire—per Parks Department requirements—inquiring about COVID-19 symptoms or if the participants have been in close contact with someone who has contracted the virus in the previous 14 days.

learn that someone who tested positive for COVID was present at the event.

“Senator Addabbo and I had to postpone our Spring Recycling Event due to COVID-19, however, I am pleased that we can move forward with our Fall Recycling Event,” Miller said. “I would like to thank the NYC Parks Department for working with us to bring this great event to our district, making sure that all involved will be safe. Even though we are unable to accept electronics, our constituents will have an opportunity to dispose their secure documents and donate their household items to the United War Veterans.”

Items that will be accepted are: paper (three boxes maximum of personal, business or medical files), clothing and shoes, small appliances, kitchenware, toys and bikes, jewelry, small furniture, American flags, and eye glasses.

Items that cannot be accepted are: any electronics, cardboard, magazines, file folders, pre-shredded paper, air conditioners, paint, and tires.

“Even though this year we will not have the full complement of services at this event, we hope we can safely provide our constituents with helping them donate their unwanted household goods and shredding their personal documents,” Addabbo added. “I would like to thank the Parks Department for working with us to bring this event to the people, my and Mike Miller’s staff for helping to make this event as safe as possible, and Community Board 9 for their partnership. We look forward to seeing you on Sept. 27.”

The event will be held on Sunday, Sept.

27 at the bandshell parking lot in Forest Park, and run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

GETTING READY FOR WINTER: KEEPING THE BUGS AWAY As we approach the fall and the flu season hovers over us, this year the season is further threatened and compromised by the potential resurgence of Covid-19. Although this is at the height of our concerns, we must not forget about the cast of characters that includes may “lesser” germs and threats than does the flu or coronavirus.

These less severe “bugs” can cause discomfort and danger as well. Luckily, your pharmacist is just the person to help you steer clear of many of these winter germs.

To begin with, we are much better off if germs are contained and disposed of quickly.

The first bit of common sense from your pharmacist is: DON'T PASS IT ON! CATCH IT — Germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.

FIND THE GARBAGE PAIL — Germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of your tissue as soon as possible.

KILL IT — Hands can transfer germs to every surface you touch. Clean your hands as soon as you can.

If you are feeling a little under the weather, try to rest, eat well, avoid stress and keep hydrated. If you have a fever, you may need extra fluids. Your pharmacist may recommend ibuprofen and/or aspirin to treat fever and pain, or they may suggest

that you inhale steam with a decongestant in to help clear a blocked nose.

Cold and flu medicines are among the top sellers in pharmacies during the winter. Some of the remedies combine painkillers with decongestants, which can help to manage symptoms, and can really help you manage a cold.

There are some benefits, particularly for children, in catching a few coughs and colds. In fact, children get a lot more colds than adults because their bodies are still building immunities. They can also be treated using some over-the-counter painkillers, to ease discomfort and help bring down a fever. Both acetaminophen and ibuprofen are available as a liquid for children, and can be given from the age of about three months. Always check with your doctor if you aren’t sure which treatments you can give your child.

While most bugs will run their course without doing any real harm, you or your child should see a doctor if you or your child have a chronic condition – such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease or a very high temperature and feel ill. If your child stops drinking and is unusually lethargic or if their fever doesn’t respond to acetaminophen or ibuprofen Babies, as well as older and frailer people, should get help if they're unwell.

Billionaire Reaches Deal to Buy Mets

Listen closely. That dull roar emanating from Flushing is actually a collective sigh of relief as beleaguered Mets fans on Monday learned that their purported deep-pocketed savior is a step away from taking control of their beloved Amazins.

That’s because hedge fund manager and long-time Mets fan Steven Cohen has signed a deal with Sterling Partners to buy

the Major League Baseball franchise, the Mets announced Monday.

“I am excited to have reached an agreement with the Wilpon and Katz families to purchase the New York Mets,” Cohen.

The sale transaction, reportedly in the neighborhood of $2.4 billion, is subject to the approval of MLB club owners.

City Planning Touts Remote Waterfront Workshops

By Michael V. Cusenza The Department of City Planning is producing a series of remote workshops, two or more in each borough, that seek to gather comment and input on the next edition of New York City’s Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, DCP Director Marisa Lago recently announced.

The plan, Lago noted, will set a vision for the future of the waterfront for the next decade and beyond.

“The Comprehensive Waterfront Plan gives every New Yorker a once-in-a-decade opportunity to craft a holistic vision for our city’s beautiful 520-mile-long waterfront. The discussions that we’re having with New Yorkers about our shoreline are invaluable, covering equity of access to jobs and open space, the health of our waterways, our resiliency to climate change and more,” Lago added.

Last week’s announcement comes alongside the launch of a new website dedicated to increasing public engagement on the plan. Public input is a critical, central pillar of the plan, which is tentatively scheduled to be released by the end of 2020, Lago said. The

The new website includes a draft framework document, spelling out priorities based on what DCP has heard from communities so far. Meant to further spur public conversation and input, the framework includes overarching themes of resiliency, equity and health that will shape the content of the plan and our process. topics like economic activity, ferries, natural resources and the working waterfront.

The workshops are tailored for local communities. Participants can join by videoconference on Zoom or by calling from any phone.
