Appellate Court Affirms Asaro’s Sentence for his Role in Howard Beach Road Rage-Related Arson

By Michael V. Cusenza The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has affirmed Bonanno organized crime family capo Vincent Asaro’s sentence for an April 2012 road rage-related arson in Howard Beach, federal officials announced on Tuesday.

“The district court did not exceed the bounds of its discretion when it sentenced Asaro to 96 months’ imprisonment followed by three years’ supervised release,” the three judges wrote in their five-page decision.

Asaro, 84, attempted to argue that U.S. District Judge Allyne Ross erred by considering conduct from his November 2015 trial—including the infamous 1978 Lufthansa heist at John F. Kennedy International Airport and the murder of Paul Katz in 1969 in Ozone Park—after which he was acquitted.

The Second Circuit disagreed with Asaro’s reasoning.

“The district court did not err when it considered acquitted conduct in sentencing Asaro. The court found Asaro’s long history of violent behavior to be proven by ‘not only just a preponderance of the evidence but by overwhelming evidence’ based on Asaro’s 2015 RICO trial at which the government presented evidence of crimes alleged to have been committed by Asaro during a period of over forty years,” according to the Second Circuit.

Asaro reasoned that the judges may only consider related acquitted conduct and that Asaro’s past alleged crimes—namely the Lufthansa job and the Katz slaying, among myriad others—are not related to the present crime because the arson was “the result of a personal vendetta fueled by road rage.”

“We are not persuaded,” the judges wrote. “Here, although the 1969 murder and the 1978 robbery did not ‘stem from a common nucleus of operative fact’ as the 2012 arson offense, those earlier offenses nevertheless informed the court’s assessment of the danger Asaro posed to the community, in light of his ‘lifelong history of violent

crime,’ and spoke to the level of specific deterrence needed…That history also informed the district court’s understanding of the seriousness of the present crime. Asaro’s insistence that the instant offense ‘was not an organized crime-related [crime]’ is belief by the fact that he used organized-crime associates whom he could command because of his status as a crime boss. The crime was thus not merely an isolated instance, however reprehensible, of road rage, but an example of his continued ability to exert the power of the underworld to intimidate and harm lawabiding citizens.”

According to charging documents, in early April 2012, Asaro was traveling in a car in Howard Beach when he became enraged at another motorist who had cut him off at a traffic light. Asaro chased the other vehicle at a high rate of speed. Later, after obtaining the home address of the owner of the other vehicle, Asaro directed an associate of the Bonanno family to set fire to that vehicle. That associate then recruited John J. Gotti, grandson of the Teflon Don, and co-defendant Matthew “Fat Matt” Rullan to help him carry out the arson.

Gotti, the grandson of the late Gambino boss John Gotti, and Rullan drove in Gotti’s Jaguar sedan to a service station in the pre-dawn hours of April 4, 2012, where they filled a container with gasoline and proceeded to the residence of the owner of the other vehicle. The Bonanno associate doused the vehicle with gasoline and Rullan ignited it. A City police officer in an unmarked car observed the crime in progress and pursued the Jaguar on a high-speed chase through borough streets until he terminated the pursuit for safety reasons due to Gotti’s reckless driving.

Howard Beach Man Charged in Attack that Left Cop Temporary Blinded

By Forum Staff A Howard Beach man has been charged with causing severe injuries to a City police officer who was responding to a home breakin last week in Kew Gardens Hills, Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan, on behalf of Queens DA Richard Brown, recently announced.

Andres Tabares, 37, has been arraigned on a criminal complaint charging him with first- and second-degree assault; aggravated assault upon a police officer or peace officer; assault on a police officer, fireman or emergency medical services professional; second-degree attempted burglary; possession of burglar’s tools; and resisting arrest.

City Department of Correction records indicate that Tabares has also been charged with violating parole.

Bail was set at $150,000 and Tabares was ordered to return to court on May 3.

According to the charges, at approximately 9:40 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2019, a man called 911 and said he saw two people trying to get into his backdoor. Police officers responded to the 59th Avenue

the crowbar he was holding.

According to the complaint, Spinella sustained an abrasion to his eye with bleeding behind his eye, swelling, and temporary blindness. Tabares, after being arrested, allegedly said that “it was a mistake” and that he was just “trying to get away.”

Moreira, 28, was apprehended without incident, Ryan noted.

The Elmhurst resident is charged in a separate complaint with firstdegree assault, second-degree attempted burglary, and seconddegree obstructing governmental administration.

“This incident illustrates the dangers police officers face every day on the job,” Ryan added. “The officer responded to a call from a homeowner that two individuals

were breaking into his home. One of the defendants, on the verge of being arrested, responded by allegedly hitting the police officer in the eye with a crowbar. This heroic public servant has temporarily lost sight in his eye. The defendant now faces a lengthy term of incarceration.”

If convicted, both Tabares and Moreira face up to 25 years in prison.

Lewis Sentenced to Life without the Possibility of Parole for Brutal Slaying of Karina Vetrano

Cusenza Chanel Lewis maintained his innocence Tuesday morning moments before Judge Michael Aloise sentenced the 22-year-old East New York resident to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the August 2016 murder of Karina Vetrano, who was pulled from a Spring Creek Park running path, sexually abused, and strangled to death near her Howard Beach home.

“I just want to say that I’m innocent,” Lewis said. “I’m sorry for the family’s loss, but I didn’t do this.”

Earlier this month, Lewis was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree intentional murder, second-degree felony murder and first-degree sexual abuse.

According to trial testimony, Vetrano, 30, was alone as she jogged along a path in the park shortly before 6 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2016. Lewis was also in Spring Creek Park.

grabbed her. Without uttering a single word, Lewis punched the victim in the face, breaking her teeth. He pulled at her clothes exposing both her breast and genitals.

According to trial testimony, the six-foot-tall defendant straddled Vetrano and pressed his knees into her torso and grasped her neck with his hands and squeezed until she could breathe no more. At some point, Lewis dragged her in

the weeds and left her body there.

Evidence presented at trial included DNA analysis which showed Lewis’s DNA was present on Vetrano’s neck, her cell phone—which was recovered about 80 feet from the woman’s body—and there was a mixture of Lewis’ DNA on the victim’s fingernails. Lewis’s cell phone records also showed that Lewis’ mobile device pinged from phone towers in

the vicinity of the park around the same time that Vetrano was killed.

According to trial testimony, Lewis confessed twice—once to police and a second time to prosecutors. In those recorded interviews, Lewis stated that he was angry at his neighbor and when he saw Vetrano he grabbed her and struck her. “I lost it,” he said. In both recorded confessions, Lewis said he punched the young woman to the

point that he broke her teeth and he sustained an open gash on his right hand near his knuckle from hitting the victim repeatedly in the face.

Medical records from a doctor’s visit the next day including an x-ray of the hand injury, and a photograph of the hand injury taken from Lewis’s phone were also presented as evidence during the trial.

According to trial testimony, Lewis denied sexually assaulting Vetrano. However, the medical examiner’s autopsy showed bruising and tearing of the victim’s vaginal area as well as bruising to her anus.

Further evidence presented during the trial, showed that before Lewis was considered a suspect and after the defendant was interviewed by police, he had done internet searches on his cell phone about Vetrano, the crime and legal information regarding Miranda rights, the Fifth Amendment, double jeopardy and death sentences.

“It is my hope that this sentence gives the family some comfort knowing their loved one’s killer will never see freedom again,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan.

South Queens Leaders Praise Conn.

Town’s Commitment to Storm Resiliency

By Forum Staff A group of area elected officials and civic leaders that recently ventured to Stamford for a tour of its storm-resiliency initiatives gave the southeastern Connecticut town high marks for its commitment to protecting flood-prone neighborhoods.

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach), State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach), and several community leaders, including Community Board 10 Chairwoman Betty Braton and New Hamilton Beach Civic President Roger Gendron trekked north to learn more about Stamford’s vaunted Hurricane Protection Barrier—and what it could do for vulnerable South Queens communities.

According to the U.S. officials, the $14.5 million Stamford Hurricane Protection Barrier was installed by the corps in Stamford Harbor in 1969. The barrier protected Stamford from significant devastation during Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, and staved off $38.4 million in damage up until that point.

According to the corps, the SHPB consists of three elements: • A barrier at the east branch of Stamford Harbor that is composed of a 2,850 foot-long earthfill dike with stone slope protection. It has an elevation of 17 feet. A

“It was great to attend Stamford to get an in-person look at their hurricane barrier that helps to keep their city resilient,” Pheffer Amato said.

90-foot-wide opening is provided for navigation, and a pump station discharges interior drainage.

• The second element is a barrier that provides protection at the west branch of the harbor. This barrier, which has an elevation of 17 feet, is composed of a 1,350-footlong concrete wall; and 2,950 feet of earthfill dike with stone slope protection and a

pumping station.

• The third portion provides protection at Westcott Cove. This barrier is a 4,400foot earthfill dike with stone slope protection having a maximum elevation of 19 feet. It boasts two pumping stations.

The tour also included a visit to a waterpumping station and the barrier’s operations. Additionally, the Queens delegation

took the opportunity to speak with Stamford Mayor David Martin about his experience with storm resiliency and how the barrier has helped to achieve that goal.

“It was great to attend Stamford to get an in-person look at their hurricane barrier that helps to keep their city resilient,” Pheffer Amato said. “Hamilton Beach and Howard Beach have long suffered due to their proximity to the water and lack of protection from storm surges and flooding, which the USACE has been aware of for over 50 years. This is exactly the kind of resiliency measure that would be perfect for longterm protection for communities bordering Jamaica Bay, and I will continue to urge the USACE to consider such an option.”

Braton added, “Being able to see the Stamford barrier along with the dikes and pumping facility components associated with it up-close was beneficial. It was well-worth the trip for the opportunity to visualize how a similar system could benefit Community Board 10’s Sandy-impact zone. The discussion between Stamford officials and our delegation was informative and appreciated. USACE now needs to get busy to provide protection for Howard Beach and Hamilton Beach, sooner rather than later, in order to protect our people and prevent further negative economic impacts on our communities.”

According to New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state took in $31.7 million in Sports Wagering Gross Revenue for the month of March alone.

By Michael V. Cusenza State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) on Thursday cited recent gaudy revenue numbers enjoyed by New Jersey in an effort to get the necessary votes to bring sports betting to the Empire State.

According to New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, the state took in $31.7 million in Sports Wagering Gross Revenue for the month of March alone.

Additionally, for the first three months of 2019, Sports Waging Gross Revenue in New Jersey is at $63.2 million.

Addabbo noted that many New Yorkers who are looking to place legal sports bets are forced to travel to other states, like New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

“March is a big month for sports betting, with the March Madness college basketball

tournament kicking off, and our neighbors in New Jersey have shown us here in New York just how much revenue can be made from legal sports betting with a mobile component, such as a smartphone or computer,” said Addabbo, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering. “New York could be reaping those same benefits, while simultaneously increasing our educational funding, if we are able to get mobile sports betting passed before session ends in June. It is a shame that our residents who wish to participate and enjoy legal sports betting must jump ship to other states. That is money taken out of our budget for important things like education.”

The U.S. Supreme Court last May lifted the federal ban on sports betting, indicating that it is up to individual states to decide if they want to allow wagering on athletic events.

Gun Found inside JFK Passenger’s DVD Player An Elmhurst resident was recently arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport after Transportation Security Administration officers detected a handgun concealed inside a DVD player, TSA officials announced on Thursday.

According to the agency, the passenger’s checked bag triggered an alarm in the security scanning equipment and the bag was pulled aside and opened to resolve the alarm. Officers spotted a DVD player inside the checked bag. Upon further inspection, TSA officers detected an unloaded 9mm handgun wrapped in aluminum foil that was hidden inside the DVD player.

TSA officials notified Port Authority Police of the discovery of the concealed weapon. Police tracked down the man, who was at the gate waiting for his flight to Mexico. Instead of catching his flight, the man was arrested and charged with weapons violations.

Borough Nonprofit Leader Named to Civic Panel

In November 2018, city voters overwhelmingly approved three ballot initiatives proposed by the 2018 Charter Revision Commission, which included campaign finance reform, community board term limits and the establishment of the Civic Engagement Commission.

Cusenza Mayor Bill de Blasio has tapped the executive director of a Richmond Hill nonprofit organization to serve on the New York City Civic Engagement Commission, a 15-member panel tasked with: promoting civic trust and strengthening democracy; establishing a citywide participatory budgeting program; providing language interpretation services at poll sites; and supporting community boards to help them be more effective and more representative of the communities they serve, the administration announced on Tuesday.

Annetta Seecharran leads Chhaya CDC, a nonprofit group that advocates for the housing needs of the city’s South Asian community. Headquartered in Jackson Heights, Chhaya CDC in February opened a community center in Richmond Hill.

Seecharran said she’s looking “forward to working with” her fellow Civic Engagement commissioners.

“Every New Yorker should know how, when and where she can influence the decisions that impact her life and her community,” the borough resident added. “I’m deeply committed to ensuring that this commission builds pathways and removes barriers to increase the civic participation of all New Yorkers.”

Prior to joining Chhaya CDC, Seecharran was the director for Policy and Advocacy for United Neighborhood Houses, a program director for International Youth Foundation, and executive director of South Asian Youth Action. She is a current and former member of several local and national boards, including Chayya CDC, and a founding member of New York State Immigration Action Fund. The Guyana native holds a master of arts degree in international political economy and development from Fordham University; a bachelor of arts degree in political science

from Manhattanville College; and executive management certificates from Columbia Business School and Harvard Business School. She currently serves on the board of the New York Immigration Coalition.

One other World’s Borough resident has been appointed to the CEC by Hizzoner.

Linda Lee is the executive director of the Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. She is a member of Community Board 11 in Queens, as well as a board member for the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City, and the Korean Church of Queens. Lee is the National Community Committee representative at the Prevention Research Center at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The Civic Engagement Commission will play a crucial role in strengthening this democracy, which is why our appointees have decades of experience elevating the voices of New Yorkers from all walks of life,” de Blasio said.

After the initial terms, all future appointments to the commission will be for four-year terms.

In celebration of National Pet Day on Saturday, City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) hosted another successful mobile pet adoption event with Animal Care Centers of NYC at the Freeway Dog Run in Rockaway.

Despite the inclement weather, we would like to gladly report that all the animals on the truck found new homes.

This year’s mobile pet adoption event marks the second time Ulrich has partnered with ACC. Last spring, the councilman hosted a mobile pet adoption event with the nonprofit in Forest Park. Coincidentally, it had also been raining at last year’s event.

“I’d like to thank ACC and all of our adopters for making this weekend’s event such a success. Despite the rainy weather, every animal on the truck found a loving home,” Ulrich noted. “I look forward to continuing our partnership with ACC and hosting more adoption events so that we can put an end animal homelessness in New York City.”

In total, six animals were adopted, including three kittens, Sasha, Rodion and Nikita; one 8-year-old cat, Bernadette; one medium dog, Lola; and one large dog, China.

eral buildings or enter military bases. With that in mind, it is highly recommended that New Yorkers who plan to travel upgrade from a standard driver’s license to a REAL ID or enhanced license before the deadline, said Transportation Security Administration Spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein.

New York’s REAL ID driver’s licenses have a star in the upper right corner to indicate that it meets federal regulations that establish minimum security standards. The enhanced driver’s license has a U.S. flag on the bottom right of the license.

The enhanced IDs, which cost $30 in addition to the regular transaction fees, are good to board a plane and enter the U.S. by land or sea to cross into the U.S. coming from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean. New York residents have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID if their license does not currently have the star or they can opt to keep their older standard driver’s license. However, a standard credential—without the star—will not be valid to board a flight or to access secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices.

To get the REAL ID star, individuals will need to visit their local New York Department of Motor Vehicles office in person and bring certain documents to prove U.S. citizenship and New York residency. Required documents include one proof of identity, one proof of legal presence, two proofs of New York residency, one proof of your social security number (if you’ve been issued one) and a current driver’s license if you are applying to exchange one issued by another U.S. state.

Cambria Heights Man Charged with Trying to Kill Transgender Girlfriend

By Forum Staff A Cambria Heights man has been indicted by a Queens grand jury for allegedly pimping out his transgender girlfriend and then trying to kill her when she refused to continue selling sex to strangers to fill his wallet with cash, Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan, on behalf of Queens DA Richard Brown, announced on Thursday.

David Viltus, 30, was arraigned last Wednesday on a 12-count indictment charging him with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree attempted assault, seconddegree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, sex trafficking, second-degree promoting prostitution, first-degree criminal contempt, and fourth-degree witness tampering. Viltus was ordered held without bail and to return to court on July 15.

According to the charges, Viltus was arrested on April 19 when police responded to a 911 call from the Hillside Hotel in Jamaica. Cops found the victim, a 29-year-old transgender woman, beaten and cut. lacerations. Viltus allegedly punched her multiple times in the face, slammed a plant into her head and placed the victim in a headlock. The woman was thrown against an automated door, knocking the door off its hinges.

According to the charges, further investigation determined that the victim was allegedly being coerced into having sex with strangers for money that Viltus pocketed.

When the woman refused to continue engaging in prostitution, Viltus allegedly reacted by striking her and choking her until she could barely breath.

According to the indictment, after his arrest last year, Viltus contacted the victim and tried to convince her to drop the charges.

“The victim—who was involved in an intimate relationship with the defendant—was allegedly brutally beaten by the man when she tried to stop prostituting herself for him. The woman’s face was slashed. She was repeatedly punched and choked out all because she didn’t want to have sex with strangers for cash anymore,” Ryan said. “This is not a victimless crime.”

If convicted, Viltus faces up to 25 years in prison.

Jackson Heights Spa Manager Indicted for Pushing Masseuse to Give “Happy Endings” to Customers

By Forum Staff A Queens grand jury has indicted a South Richmond Hill man for allegedly pushing a female spa worker to include oral sex, intercourse, and other sexual favors during the massages she gave clients at a Jackson Heights spa between May 2018 and February 2019, Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan, on behalf of Queens DA Richard Brown, announced on Friday.

Vajira Jayatunge, 50, was arraigned Friday morning on a 10-count indictment charging him with sex trafficking, thirddegree promoting prostitution, forcible touching, and thirddegree sexual abuse. Bail was set at $200,000 and Jayatunge was ordered to surrender his passport and return to court on May 1.

The new worker was then induced into adding masturbation, oral sex, and sexual intercourse to the massages she performed on clients. Jayatunge allegedly kept all the money for these sex acts.

According to the charges, when the worker tried to stop trading sex for money as part of her spa employment, she began receiving threatening text messages; and when she spoke to Jayatunge about the messages, he allegedly threatened to tell her family that she had been engaging in prostitution acts, in addition to threatening her with deportation.

Last Thursday, police executed a court-authorized search warrant at the 76th Street spa, where approximately 12 women worked.

“This is sex trafficking and those who force women into prostitution will find themselves facing incarceration,” Ryan added.

If convicted, Jayatunge faces up to 25 years in prison.

LIC Man Pleads Guilty in Vicious Halloween 2017 Assault on Teen

By Forum Staff A Long Island City man has admitted to recklessly driving his vehicle onto the sidewalk and running down a 17-year-old high school football player who was with a group of people purportedly out egging on Halloween night 2017, Chief Assistant District Attorney John Ryan, on behalf of Queens DA Richard Brown, announced on Thursday.

Richard Keith, 51, has pleaded guilty to first-degree assault before Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Barry Kron, who indicated that he would sentence Keith on May 16 to nine years in prison and three years’ post-release supervision.

According to the charges, Keith was seen driving his gray 2008 Dodge Caravan onto the sidewalk toward a group of people, including the victim, Christopher Miraba, 17, at the intersection of 23rd Street and Jackson Avenue at approximately 8:19 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017. The victim tried

By Forum Staff A Fresh Meadows woman has pleaded guilty to acting as an agent of the People’s Republic of China, without notification to the attorney general, by working at the direction and control of military officers assigned to the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, federal prosecutors recently announced.

Ying Lin, 48, a former manager with an international air carrier headquartered in China, wrongly facilitated the transport of packages from John F. Kennedy International Airport to China aboard the air carrier flights at the behest of Chinese military officers and in violation of Transportation Security Administration regulations.

According to court filings, Lin worked for the air carrier from 2002 through fall 2015 as a counter agent at JFK Airport and from fall 2015 through April 2016 as the station manager at Newark Liberty International Airport. During her employment with the air carrier, Lin accepted packages from Chinese military officers, and placed those packages aboard the air carrier flights to China as unaccompanied luggage, or checked the packages under the names of other passengers on those flights. Because the Chinese military officers did not travel on those flights, Lin’s actions violated TSA regulations that require that checked baggage be accepted only from ticketed passengers. In addition, Lin encouraged other employees to assist the Chinese military officers, instructing them that because the air carrier was a Chinese company, their primary loyalty should be to the People’s Republic of China.

According to officials, in exchange for her illegal acts, Lin received benefits from the Chinese Mission and Chinese Consulate in New York, including tax-exempt purchases of liquor, cigarettes, and electronic devices worth tens of thousands of dollars, and free contracting work at her two residences in Queens by PRC construction workers who were permitted under the terms of their visas to work only on Chinese government facilities.

Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said Lin’s actions “as an agent of the Chinese government helped Chinese military officers to evade U.S. law enforcement scrutiny of packages that they sent from New York to Beijing. This case demonstrates how seriously we address counterintelligence threats posed by individuals in the United States who work for foreign governments, such as China.”

When sentenced, Lin faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment. As part of the guilty plea, Lin agreed to forfeit approximately $25,000 as well as an additional $145,000 in connection with her resolution of the government’s forfeiture verdict in United States v. Zhong.

Mayor Lauds City’s Ambitious $14B Green New Deal

Cusenza Gotham’s Green New Deal, the de Blasio administration’s “bold and audacious” initiative to attack global warming, is comprised of $14 billion in investments, legislation, and action at the City level that will ensure a nearly 30-percent additional reduction in greenhouse emissions by 2030, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday at Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City.

According to Hizzoner, the Green New Deal is a component of “OneNYC 2050: Building a Strong and Fair City,” a progressive plan to prepare the five boroughs for the future and how to address the existential threats posed by climate change, economic insecurity, inequity, and rising global intolerance. The elements of the GND have been engineered to confront income inequality, generating tens of thousands of good-paying jobs retrofitting buildings and expanding renewable energy, de Blasio noted.

Negotiations will begin right away, with the goal of striking

a deal by the end of 2020 and powering city operations entirely with renewable sources of electricity within five years.

Mandatory organics recycling: The City will make organics collection mandatory citywide, including curbside pickup, drop-off sites, and support for community composting opportunities.

Reducing waste and carbon-intensive consumption: The City will end unnecessary purchases of single-use plastic foodware, phase out the purchase of processed meat, reduce the purchase of beef by 50 percent and commit to a carbon-neutral City vehicle fleet by 2040.

Landlord to Pay $1.1M to Parker Towers Tenants

Leaders of Borough Boy Scout Units in ‘Perversion Files’

Montgomery (Troop 53); and Hans Pederson (Troop 389) are named on the Empire State list. They led Boy Scout units in Rockaway Beach, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Flushing, and Bellerose.

Tuesday’s rollout is part of the firm’s revelation that the BSA has documented that 7,819 adult leaders were accused of sexually abusing 12,254 victims across the country from 19442016, according to an expert who testified in a child sexual abuse trial in January.

According to Anderson & Associates, since approximately 1920, BSA has maintained these files, also known as “perversion files,” internally to document individuals whose Boy Scout registrations were revoked because of allegations of child sexual abuse.

“These numbers are staggering and tragic,” said attorney Jeff Anderson. “We believe that the actual numbers of Boy Scout perpetrators and victims are much higher, unfortunately.

We call on the Boy Scouts to publicly release the names and files of all Boy Scout perpetrators…They have to identify the truth of their own involvement and the magnitude of the decisions they made—and that is identify every offender they know exists in their files and is out in communities. They have to be accountable.”

JFK Customs Officer Swiped Cash from Bags: Feds

By Michael V. Cusenza A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has been charged with stealing cash out of bags belonging to arriving passengers at John F. Kennedy International Airport from April 2018 to April 2019, federal prosecutors announced on Thursday.

Joseph Cialone, 39, of East Meadow, L.I., was released on $50,000 bond after his arraignment Thursday.

According to the six-page complaint, on Thursday, agents from the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility surveilled Cialone via live video as he patrolled Terminal 4 at JFK Airport. Agents observed Cialone conduct multiple border-enforcement exams of passengers from Caribbean Airlines flight number BW 726, arriving from Georgetown, Guyana. In at least two of those exams, Cialone, who was wearing latex gloves on both hands, searched a female with a large handbag, and after he removed his gloved hand in a fist from

those bags, he took off the glove and placed it in his pocket.

The agents subsequently approached Cialone and cuffed him. During a search of Cialone’s person and property, the agents recovered three latex gloves, two of which contained hundred-dollar bills.

In a private room at a CBP facility near the airport, Senior Special Agent Andrew Millar read Cialone his Miranda rights. Cialone indicated to Millar that he understood said rights and agreed to waive them.

“Thereafter,” Millar wrote, “Cialone stated…that he has stolen one-hundred-dollar bills from passengers’ handbags on at least 100 occasions over the past year, during which he was assigned to the Smuggling Interdiction Unit.

Cialone further stated that he only searched deep handbags, because it is easier to conceal his movements. And then, after stealing the currency, he would go to the bathroom, where he would place the stolen money in his wallet.”

Officials Seize Phony Sports Rings

United States Customs and Border Patrol officers working at John F. Kennedy International Airport inspected a shipment from China last month and discovered 177 counterfeit professional and collegiate sports rings worth an estimated manufacturer suggested retail price of $11.7 million, had they been genuine, CBP officials announced this week.

The seized rings were infringing on the trademarks of Major League Baseball, the

National Football League, the National Hockey League, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

According to CBP, the theft of intellectual property and the trade in substandard and often dangerous goods threaten America’s innovation economy and consumer health and safety, and generate proceeds that fund criminal activities and organized crime.
