A fallen tree branch came crashing down at the eastbound stop of the Q24 at 106th street and Atlantic Avenue last week, narrowly missing pedestrians waiting for the bus. Those who know the problems at the stop say it's a tragedy waiting to happen.

In his letter, Riggi also noted that there were tree pits with “up-rooting” trees in the bus stop contributing to the broken curb and sidewalk. He requested the removal of the stop stating, "I believe the removal of this stop will eliminate the possibility of an accident or injury, improve service to the Q24 route and ... comply with the requests of customers and a homeowner.”

On December 24, 2013, only 11 days later, Riggi’s colleague another superintendent from Brooklyn Road Operations Mark McLilly, reported that a field meeting had taken place on the day before regarding the Q24 stop. McLilly stated in the letter the decision to move the stop saying, “...stop will be changed…due to car repair shop hazardous conditions.” But after the letters were written and plans to move the stop documented, no action was taken by the agency and all further requests have fallen on deaf ears.

"Many people have come into our office after falling in the bus stop. Thankfully it has only been skinned knees or twisted ankles thus far, but you have to ask yourself if it's ok to think that riding a bus should present a physical threat," said Aurora. And he says the most dangerous thing to happen was just last week when a tree limb broke off and came crashing to the ground. "Thankfully the couple standing there were limber enough to get out of the way, but a senior or a disabled person would surely have wound up under the fallen tree limb."

After a long line of broken promises by elected officials and city agencies, the owners at Sonny’s Auto Collision have been informed that the City refuses to move the Q24 bus stop which spans a section of broken sidewalk in front of their business establishment at 106th street and Atlantic Ave. “We have been asking–begging–someone to do something about this dangerous condition for more than 10 years,” Sonny's owner James Aurora told The Forum. “We came very close back in 2013 but then the MTA just reneged on their plans and we’ve been hitting brick walls on this issue ever since. “ Aurora says the problem is not just about how the impractical location of the stop affects his business, but the danger it poses to pedestrians waiting to board the eastbound Q24 on Atlantic Ave near the corner of 106th street and those who disembark at the same point.

The Forum has obtained copies of letters from two superintendents at the MTA back in 2013, which cite both the hazardous conditions and the complaints from bus riders.

Emily made her first hair donation when she was just 6 years old.

By Michael V. Cusenza The story of a shy girl from Richmond Hill shedding her locks has led to many a listener shedding tears.

Nine-year-old Emily recently donated 13 inches of her beautiful black tresses to a borough-based group that creates wigs for children who are experiencing hair-loss due to cancer treatment therapies, alopecia, and other medical conditions.

Last month, while on break from school, the philanthropic fourth-grader and mom, Sherry, made an appointment with Gio Natalya VIP Salon & Spa on Liberty Avenue so Emily could have her hair cut by a professional to secure the locks for donation to Butterflies By Blaq Incorporated – the 501(c)(3) St. Albans nonprofit organization which provides free hair replacements and solutions for kids in need.

“I wanted to do it because my hair is very long and I wanted to give it to kids with cancer, because they’re suffering a lot,” Emily told The Forum on Tuesday.

Founded in 2012 by Madame EJ Blackman, with the assistance of co-founder, Kaiya Blackman, Butterflies BBI was established to address the needs of children suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions and treatments. According to the organization, special consideration is given to inner-city children because “they are often a group that has been greatly overlooked due to the special needs of their hair.”

“Our goal is to help restore normalcy in addition to promoting a sense of wellbeing to our clients while they deal with their personal illnesses and conditions,” the group said. “We know that raising the self-esteem of our disadvantaged youth now, can help brighten their futures and we'd like to be given the chance to help

lighten their load and make a difference.”

This isn’t the first time Emily and her hair have made a difference. After seeing a TV commercial for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Emily tugged at her mom’s hand, insisting that she had to help.

At the time, Emily was several weeks shy of her sixth birthday.

“My daughter gets ‘it,’” Sherry said.

“She’s a genuine, caring kid.”

So three years ago Emily had 13 inches of hair cut off and donated to the Wigs for Kids charity.

Founded in 1981 by Certified Cosmetic Therapist Jeffrey Paul, Wigs for Kids is a cooperative effort among Certified Cosmetic Therapists throughout North America who share a common goal, according to Paul.

“Children shouldn’t have to worry about how they look, especially when they’re in the middle of a health crisis,” Paul said. “We want to give these kids the opportunity to feel good about themselves again.”

Asked where she thinks Emily got her charitable spirit, Sherry believes it’s all in the family.

“My dad is a wonderful, amazing person. Because of him we have great ideals and values,” she said of her dad, Ameer.

“So I learned service from him.”

And that altruism has been passed down to Emily.

“Everybody who knows her knows that even though she’s only 9, she’s so nurturing and caring,” Sherry added. “I personally think in Emily’s lifetime she’s going to do a lot of amazing things.”

A woman was stabbed in the head with a pair of scissors early Monday morning during a brawl outside a Richmond Hill pool hall, according to the City Police Department and published reports.

Health Department Adds Two Enhancements to Medical Marijuana Program

By Forum Staff The State Department of Health recently announced two enhancements to New York’s Medical Marijuana Program that, according to the agency, will improve patient access. These measures include authorizing physician assistants to certify patients and adding chronic pain as a qualifying condition.

Physician assistants may now register with DOH to certify patients for medical marijuana as long as their supervising physician is also registered to certify patients.

This regulatory amendment, which was adopted last Wednesday, March 15, will help patients, according to the Health Department, by increasing the number of eligible practitioners, particularly in many rural counties where fewer physicians are available.

And, effective yesterday, March 22, chronic pain will be added as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana.

Chronic pain, according to DOH, is defined as “any severe debilitating pain that the practitioner determines degrades health and functional capability; where the patient has contraindications” (the patient has a specific condition/situation in which a therapy normally recommended to manage chronic pain shouldn’t be used because it may be

harmful to that patient), “has experienced intolerable side effects, or has experienced failure of one or more previously tried therapeutic options; and where there is documented medical evidence of such pain having lasted three months or more beyond onset, or the practitioner reasonably anticipates such pain to last three months or more beyond onset.”

According to the Health Department, physician assistants who successfully complete the NYSDOH-approved course and

are in full compliance with other regulatory requirements must complete an authorization form with their supervising physicians, and mail the form along with the course completion certificate to the Department.

Once the information provided is validated, the department indicated that it will send an email confirmation to the physician assistant containing a link that will authorize the physician assistant to register to certify patients.

“Improving patient access to medical

marijuana continues to be one of our top priorities, as it has been since the launch of the program,” said Health Commissioner Howard Zucker, M.D. “These key enhancements further that goal. Medical marijuana is already making a difference for patients across New York State, and we are constantly evaluating the program to see how we can make it better.”

Vireo Health of New York, which owns and operates the city’s only medical marijuana dispensary in Elmhurst, praised the Health Department’s latest cannabis-related moves.

“As a physician, I applaud efforts to expand the program based on the existing science and improve access for those patients who could benefit from treatment with dependable, real-dose medical cannabis,” said Dr. Stephen Dahmer, chief medical officer of Vireo Health. “Our entire team is honored to offer compassionate care and third-party tested medical cannabis to new patients who will now qualify with today’s changes in hopes of helping to alleviate their pain.”

Vireo CEO Ari Hoffnung added, “Today’s announcement gives hope to thousands of New York patients suffering from chronic pain. While medical cannabis alone cannot solve the opioid crisis, it could provide a much safer alternative for many patients.”

Trump Budget Would Force NYPD to Roll Back Critical Anti-Terror Efforts: Schumer

By Forum Staff Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer on Sunday decried President Donald Trump’s first budget proposal, which, according to the senator, makes “dramatic and ill-advised cuts” to federal funding that supports critical anti-terrorism programs that enable New York City law enforcement to prevent and respond to attacks and threats.

Schumer said that the administration’s fiscal plan includes $700 million in cuts to programs such as the Homeland Security Grants and the Urban Area Security Initiative that helps cities like NYC prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism. Meanwhile, Schumer noted, the City Police Department spends millions in extra local—not federal—City dollars to protect Trump Tower, so it’s “unfair” for the President to propose cuts that could mean an even greater burden on taxpayers in the five boroughs when it comes to making the city safe. Schumer also said the Homeland Security Grant program provides federal funding to address the unique needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas like the New York metropolitan area, and helps keep the NYPD a step ahead of evil-doers.

all they can to keep New Yorkers safe and secure. These dollars prevent costly and crippling disasters, but more importantly, these dollars save lives and so, it makes no sense for this funding to be slashed. New York City continues to be the number one target for terrorism in the United States and federal

In fact, with the continued requirements of the NYPD to protect Trump Tower, federal funds to New York City should be increased, not decreased.”

Schumer also explained that urban cities like NYC rely on UASI funds to maintain terrorism prevention and response infrastructure. For instance, the Empire State’s senior senator explained that New York City uses a portion of UASI funds to support crucial First Responder Training efforts. Examples of this include the Fire Department’s Tiered Response Training and the Police Department’s Counter-Terrorism Training, such as the active shooter course. UASI funds also pay for coordinated regional planning exercises throughout the Metropolitan area. The exercises are designed to prepare multi-jurisdictional emergency response related to a large and catastrophic event. UASI funds also have been used on Ground Law Enforcement Security Measures, Schumer said, which includes heavy-weapons teams that conduct ongoing patrols at transit hubs, airports, bridges, subways, waterways and highly visited landmarks.

Schumer also noted that last year he successfully pushed to restore $600 million in key anti-terror dollars after then-President Barack Obama’s budget “woefully” recommended a funding level of only $330 million in UASI money required to keep NYC safe.

Ulrich Opts Not to Run for Mayor

Last month, Ulrich celebrated the eight-year anniversary of his Council seat election win. This year, instead of running against Mayor de Blasio, Ulrich said he will be seeking a third term representing the 32nd District.

By Michael V. Cusenza City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) this week announced that later this year he will be running for re-election to a third term on the Council—not for mayor.

“It’s something that I’ve been considering for quite some time now, mulling it over these past few months with my family, my friends, and my supporters, and I’ve decided that this would not be the right move for me to make,” Ulrich announced on Monday evening on “The Road to City Hall” on Spectrum News New York 1. “I think that despite what some of the polls may indicate, [Mayor] Bill de Blasio can absolutely be beat – but I’m not sure that I’m in a position to beat him this year.”

Show host Josh Robin pressed the issue, asking Ulrich if he believes he ultimately could defeat de Blasio. The confident councilman cited financing as a major hurdle, but also made it clear that he doesn’t view the incumbent as a significant threat—to any challenger. “[De Blasio] is his own worst enemy,” Ulrich added. “If you look at his lackluster performance, and his inability to bring people together in this city, I think he absolutely can be a one-term mayor.”

Ulrich, over the past year, has blasted de Blasio for myriad issues. Here, in no particular order, is just a sampling of the councilman’s greatest Hizzoner hits: • Last summer, Ulrich lambasted the mayor for his “poor handling” of the Superstorm Sandy reconstruction program, Build it Back, and the de Blasio administration “for not delivering on their promise to help people get back into their homes after Superstorm Sandy.”

• Earlier this month, Ulrich ripped de Blasio and “Turning the Tide on Homelessness, Neighborhood by Neighborhood” – the

City’s latest plan to get a hold of the crisis: “Mayor de Blasio set expectations so incredibly low today that you have to wonder if he was even being serious. Over the next four years, he aims to move a mere 2,500 people out of the shelter system. This is an insult to the 60,000 plus New Yorkers who are desperately waiting for permanent housing. Homelessness is at an all-time high. It is a serious issue and deserves serious, thoughtful solutions.

Instead of feuding with the Governor, the Mayor should be fighting in Albany to bring back Section 8 vouchers. Instead of building more shelters, the Mayor should be investing in transitional housing programs that actually work by encouraging rehabilitation and upward mobility. The Mayor should also fire his DHS Commissioner, Steven Banks, for doing an abysmal job running this Agency. Until there are real programs, real solutions and real accountability – we will not see real progress or help for the people who need it the most.”

• And in January, the councilman took aim at de Blasio’s Fiscal Year 2018 Preliminary Budget: “Mayor de Blasio’s budget uses smoke and mirrors to mask the real problems facing our city. The Mayor is obviously more concerned with his reelection and raising his own political profile than addressing the homeless epidemic, tackling the affordable housing crisis, and improving the quality of life in every borough.”

Ulrich has not endorsed a candidate, but promised he would when a front-running challenger emerged, and pledged to support that person in order to secure de Blasio’s legacy as a one-term Gracie Mansion tenant.

“I don’t think the city can stand another four years of his incompetent leadership, his inattention to detail, and lack of innovation,” Ulrich said.

Police Look to Public for Help in Hunt for Driver in Woodhaven Hit-and-Run that Killed his Brother

As of Wednesday, Aidan Camacho remains a wanted man.

The City Police Department has reached out to the public for assistance in locating a driver who left the scene of a recent hit-and-run accident in Woodhaven which claimed the life of his older brother.

According to investigators, on Sunday, March 12, around 4:15 a.m. police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of Atlantic Avenue and 85th Street. Upon arrival, the police report said, officers discovered Angel Camacho, Jr. in the front passenger seat of a 2008 Acura with trauma about the body.

Cops indicated that a preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the Acura, Aidan Camacho, 19, was traveling westbound in the left lane on Atlantic

Avenue when the car lost control, struck a parked vehicle and a tree, eventually coming to rest near 85th Street. Aidan Camacho allegedly fled the scene of the collision in an unknown direction. His brother was removed by EMS to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition. Angel Camacho, Jr. succumbed to his injuries the following day, cops said.

The boys’ mother told the New York Daily News that her younger son is not at fault.

“We are grieving — we lost one son, and we have one son that’s wanted for something he didn’t do,” Fernanda Almestica said.

Aidan Camacho is described as a Hispanic man, 5-foot-8, 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wear-

ing a white, hooded long-sleeve sweatshirt with dark pants and shoes.

Feds Find 5 Pounds of Cocaine Taped to JFK Passenger’s Legs

By Forum Staff Federal agents stationed at John F. Kennedy International Airport recently foiled an alleged smuggler’s plot to illicitly import cocaine, according to U.S Customs and Border Protection officials.

Last Thursday, March 16, Mayobanex Ruiz Gomez, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, arrived at JFK Airport from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and presented himself for inspection. During the examination of Gomez’s suitcase he exhibited numerous signs of nervousness, CBP officers said.

Gomez was subsequently escorted to a private search room where Customs agents

conducted a physical search of his person, during which they discovered packages that would later test positive for cocaine taped to his legs.

According to authorities, approximately 5 pounds of the white stuff, with an estimated street value of more than $83,000, were seized.

“This latest seizure demonstrates our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these illicit drugs,” said Leon Hayward, acting director of CBP’s New York Field Operations.

LIC Man Gets a Year in Prison for Tossing Dog from Third-Floor Window

By Forum Staff A 21-year-old man will be spending the next year in prison after dropping his mixedbreed Chihuahua out of the window of his third floor apartment in Long Island City.

Dorian Quezada, of 43rd Street has been sentenced to a year in jail and will be forced to register with the City as an animal abuser after he is released.

Quezada pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty for dropping the dog from a window in August 2016. Despite suffering severe injuries, she survived the fall.

Describing the horrible abuse to the pet, DA Richard Brown said, “ It is hard to imagine that someone would do something so cruel to their pet. My office takes a strong stand against any and all animal cruelty and is committed to aggressively enforcing the laws that protect animals from harm. The defendant in this case will go to jail and will be barred from owning any animals for a lengthy period of time.”

In addition to his sentencing and post release mandatory registration with the New York City Department of Health as an animal abuser, he is banned from owning any animal for five years following his incarceration.

Anyone listed on the animal abuse registry is barred from adopting pets from shelters or rescue groups and from buying animals from pet stores.

JFK Passenger Indicted on Hate Crimes Charges for Attack on Muslim Airport Employee

By Forum Staff A Massachusetts man who physically and verbally attacked an employee at the Delta Sky Lounge in JFK back in January has now been indicted for hate crime charges.

The defendant, identified as Robin A. Rhodes, 57, of Worcester Massachusetts was charged at his arraignment in a fourcount indictment with third-degree assault as a hate crime, second degree unlawful imprisonment as a hate crime, third-degree menacing as a hate crime and second degree aggravated harassment. He was released on $50,000 bond/$30,000 cash bail and ordered to return to court on June 12, 2017 “The defendant is accused of physically and verbally attacking a woman for no apparent reason other than because of her religion. A bystander came over to the office trying to calm Rhodes down, and when he[Rhodes] moved away from the door, the victim ran out of the office to the lounge’s front desk.

Rhodes followed her and got down on his knees and began to bow down in imitation of a Muslim praying and shouted, “[Expletive deleted] Islam, [Expletive deleted] ISIS, Trump is here now. He will get rid of all of you. You can ask Germany, Belgium and France about these kind of people. You will see what happens.”

According to the charges, the victim suffered substantial pain and redness in her right leg and was placed in fear of physical injury, annoyance and alarm as a result of Rhodes’ alleged actions. At the time of his arrest, Rhodes allegedly told police, in sum and substance, “I guess I am going to jail for disorderly conduct.”

nue in Maspeth, the defendant pleaded guilty last month to second-degree burglary. He was sentenced last Friday to nine years in prison to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.

According to the charges, the defendant burglarized nine different homes in several Queens neighborhoods, predominately in Elmhurst and Flushing, Queens, between September 15, 2016, and December 7, 2016.

In each incident, the defendant ransacked the homes and stole various property, including a camera, silver coins, jewelry and cash.

A 30-year-ld woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of her aunt in a viscious attack with a meat cleaver.

According to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, Elizabeth Sanchez (aka Digna Sanchez-Ortiz) brutally attacked Maria Palaguachi on the morning of March 16 in the 174th Street home that they shared in Jamaica, Queens.

The 50-year-old victim was struck

multiple times about the head, neck and shoulder with a meat cleaver by her niece, resulting in fatal wounds. The meat cleaver was recovered at the residence.

The defendant is charged in the criminal complaint with second-degree murder and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon and is being held pending arraignment.

If convicted, she faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

SUCCESSION Dear Editor, Since the election of Donald Trump, much has been said and written about celebrating diversity and increasing penalties for hate crimes. But I wonder, will this apply to all such offenses?

In 2016, I and my family supported Donald Trump for president. Throughout the campaign, we were victimized, either physically, verbally or via theft. My "Make America Great Again" was snatched off my head, as I was spat at and called vulgar names. My brother's lawn sign was stolen, rocks thrown on the lawn and eggs at the house. A Trump bumper sticker was removed from my car, which was scratched apparently with a key.

Except for FOX News and a brief story on 1010 WINS radio, these were virtually ignored.

For all the criticism Mr. Trump has taken, I salute him in bravely pursuing his campaign promises and tackling issues previous presidents ignored or were too afraid to confront. It has been reported that since his inauguration, illegal immigration into America has decreased. There hasn't been one terrorist attack. The Black Lives Matter movement, which was used as a political tool to earn votes for Democrats, backfired on them. There is little attention paid to it.

Finally, I eagerly await to see if the proposed penalties for hate crimes will actually apply to all.

In October, when Columbus Day celebrations occur, will there be prosecution of those who attack Italian-Americans or advertise holiday sales?

HEALTHCARE IS SICK Dear Editor, There are many things wrong with the new "Trumpdoesntcare" healthcare bill. But it's a fact that those earning more than $3.9 million(the wealthiest .1%) will get a $207,000 tax break. That's five times the rate families earning between $50,000 to $90,000 will get. And THAT fact alone should be enough for any "decent republican" to vote against it!

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's OK for the rich to get huge tax breaks. And I guess the GOP thinks it's OK to pay for those tax breaks by making the poor who earn around $20,000 a year make up the difference along with having seniors pay $3600 more per year. But wait, how do they explain the benefit of leaving 14 million people without healthcare in the first year of the plan? And 24 million by 2026? Oops my mistake, the Congressional Budget Office projects the number of uninsured people overall would nearly double from 28 million under the current law to 52 million if "Trumpdoesntcare" becomes law.

Paul Ryan defended the plan because he says the federal government will save $337 billion over the next decade. So I guess $337 billion is worth more than 52 million lives. But I'm sure those savings will increase while the uninsured begin to die off. Nice job, republicans. Talk about "death squads". If 20 million new people getting health coverage under Obamacare was a nightmare, what the hell do you call 52 million people losing healthcare? A zombie, nightmare in a volcano on a distant moon of Jupiter with Satan sticking a red hot poker in your eye? Is this what Trump said would be "terrific"? "Terrifying" is more like it. Of course, Trump downplays the CBO assessment of the GOP healthcare plan"when Obama was here, people didn't like him so much. But now that he's gone, people miss him".

Mr. Trump, that's only because now we're stuck with you. A Hemorrhoid with a toupee. On FOX "news" Newt Gingrich said "The CBO is corrupt.

It's dishonest". Really? The director of the CBO is Keith Hall, he was handpicked by congressional republicans in April 2015. This healthcare bill is just evidence that the Republicans do nothing, ever, except funnel money to rich people. Trump said after he got rid of the disaster that he called Obamacare he would replace it with something "terrific". He said everyone would be covered, it would cost you a fraction of what Obamacare cost and the coverage would be better. I'm surprise he didn't say that people would want to get sick just to see how good their new healthcare is. The reality? 24 million people will lose their coverage and the rich get a giant tax break. Terrific? More like HORRIFIC! The ironic thing is that now many Trump supporters are realizing that the health coverage they will be losing was in fact Obamacare. But at least they have a nice little red hat that says Make America Great Again.

Trumps new budget has cuts to the EPA, PBS, medical research, science research, education, human rights associations, aid for homeless veterans, after-school meal programs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Also The elimination of the Community Development Block Grant program that serves 2.4 million seniors by way of "meals on wheels". That's right "meals on wheels", the new budget director said the program was "not showing any results". I guess in the Republican world keeping veterans, the elderly and the handicapped alive isn't a positive result. Absolutely disgraceful. During his campaign Trump asked voters "what do you have to lose"? Now we know. Trump touts the fact that he's going to put the coal miners back to work.

That's right he's going to increase coal production, sending those workers down into the toxic pits. But when they come out of the hole with black lung disease they'll realize they don't have any healthcare. Republicans have also allotted $0 to Climate research. For years they denied it but said it needed to be studied further. Now? To hell with it, let the planet fry and the oceans rise. In 2009 Trump said"climate change would be catastrophic and irreversible and the science is irrefutable". In 2016-"it's a Chinese hoax". P.S. Last week President Trump fired U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. Bharara's Office had been conducting a probe of FOX "news" channel and whether they had made hidden payments to employees who alleged sexual assault by Roger Ailes. Now Trump is considering Marc Mukasey as Bharara's replacement. Mukasey is Roger Ailes' personal attorney. An infant with an IQ of 50 could easily connect the dots. They might even be able to explain it to Trump. The four chairmen and ranking members of the two intelligence committee's investigating Trump's phone tap allegations have stated "unequivocally" that there's no evidence to support Trump's statement that President Obama tapped the phone lines at Trump Tower. ZERO!!!

And when FBI director James Comey puts the final exclamation point on the investigation it will be up to President Trump to explain why he would make such a baseless, ignorant, clueless claim. Will he?

Don't bet on it. Yet Sean Spicer said Trump "doesn't really think President Obama tapped his phone personally". Well, that clears everything up. We all must have been mistaken with the actual tweet Trump sent: "How low has President Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process.

This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!" And on a somewhat related note, my kids sometimes like to take photos of a particularly good looking meal and send it to their friends. Perhaps Kellyanne Conway can tell me where I can purchase one of those microwaves that turn into a Camera. And some fools write letters to the Forum giving history lessons of past presidents and say "we should just support the president because he's our president".

Regardless of the lies, hatred and ignorance being emitted from his blowhole. That's like saying, since breakfast is the most important meal of the day you

should eat it, even if it's a bowl of toxic waste. When Senator John McCain started questioning the Yemen raid, The Whitehouse was appalled saying "how dare anyone question this military mission".

John McCain is the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. It is literally his JOB to question a military operation. THAT is how clueless this president and his administration are. Republicans blamed Benghazi on Clinton despite the fact that she and other Democrats requested further security funding for consulates and embassies throughout the world-the GOP Voted the bill down. Yet the foolish, failed decision of the Yemen raid is NOT blamed on Trump? The man who actually signed off on the mission. These same fools comment that Jimmy Carter's energy policy was a "failed one". I'll say it again, Carter put solar panels on the roof of the White House, Reagan took them down. If we had listened to Carter the United States wouldn't have been groveling at the feet of Saudi Arabia for the last 50 years. Perhaps the world would have followed our lead, and our climate wouldn't be in a shambles. But lobbyists for "Big Oil" put an end to solar energy then and continue to do so now.

Why? Because they can't make money off solar energy for the simple reason that the sun is free. At least for now. But I'm sure Republicans are working on that "flaw of capitalism". Lastly, a fool will criticize Obama for "not doing enough" once he became president. I guess ending two wars(based on lies),killing Gadhafi and Bin Laden, rescuing our economy from the ditch that Republicans left it in, providing healthcare for more than 20 million people who previously had none, etc. ALL with absolutely no help from Republicans. In fact with Republican obstruction at every turn, equates to"not enough". And claiming that Obama's victory over Clinton in the primary was far more historic than his becoming the first black president of the United States? Seriously, how clueless, ignorant and jaded can one person be?

SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT Dear Editor, One of America’s national treasures is being commemorated, in a centennial celebration this year. Ella Fitzgerald was/is the first lady of popular music. She was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News Virginia, and went on to be the most recognized jazz voice the world has ever known. As a young teenager, Ella first aspired to be a dancer, but to cut to the chase, the story has it that a friend dared her to audition as a singer, for an amateur talent night at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater in 1934.

Although it is alleged that she was discovered, by famed band leader of the time, Benny Carter, it was the top pre-band era leader Chick Webb, who actually hired the singer in June 1935. Webb had had, an all instrumental band, and was rated at the top, in popularity for that time. Ella changed all that. Her seamless pure, perfect pitch voice literally became a part of his orchestra, and her natural feel for jazz began to overshadow the integrity of Webb’s arrangements. Chick Webb was no fool, as he saw early on, the potential of diversity Ella brought to every number. He quickly remolded his band around her performances, and it rode him into the big band era ahead of the pack. On May 2, 1938, she recorded what would become her career signature, “A-Tisket-A-Tasket” and her only number one hit. In later years, she unsuccessfully tried to

avoid public performance of it. It was much in the same way Rosemary Clooney hated, to sing “Come On A-My House.” The premature death of Chick Webb, in June 1939 at age 30, during the height of the band era, brought Ella to a new pinnacle. At 22 years of age, Webb’s musicians convinced her to stay on as its leader, and to front the band. Two years later in July 1941, the last recording session of “Her Famous Orchestra” saw the end of one era, and the start of another. At this point, it was now simply Ella Fitzgerald, vocalist. Over the next 15 years, she toiled at current pop favorites, where at times, she teamed with the likes of the Mills Brothers, Ink Sports, Delta Rhythm Boys, Louis Jordan, and of course Louis Armstrong. A big change took place in 1956, at the start of the Rock and Roll craze, when Norman Granz formed his Verve label, and brought Ella on board, to set the standard on its heels. It was here that the series of song books saw the light of day, highlighting America’s greatest composers. The Cole Porter struck a nerve, and it was all Ella. No one had ever taken these masterpieces to task quite like she. Ella sang them as the composers wrote them, and they sold big time. She went on a roll. Rodgers & Hart, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer. Then there was Ella and Louis re-creating “Porgy and Bess” and other duet pairings. Her work with Nelson Riddle arranging did much to keep these albums selling and charting. Add to this the swing sessions with William “Count” Basie. Her roots were always with jazz, but it was that chemistry setting sessions with Nelson Riddle, which set the juices flowing for a revival of standards. From 1972 to 1992, she recorded for Pablo Records. Jazz festivals were frequent, as well as continued associations with Riddle, Basie, Oscar Peterson, Ellis Larkin,Buddy Bregman, Billy May and others. Ella appeared in two major films, “Pete Kelly’s Blues” 1955, and “St. Louis Blues” 1958.

She had open heart surgery in 1986. By 1990 with her health failing, diabetes was taking its toll. Her final concert was in December 1992. Her last released recording was “All that Jazz” in 1990. In 1993 both her legs were amputated below the knee, and it was now essentially over for good. Ella died on June 15, 1996. Ella Fitzgerald remains the most recorded female vocalist of all time, and second only to Bing Crosby. Ella is known to have made 2,309 total sides in her career from 1935 to 1990. UNIVERSAL music has prepared a yearlong celebration of releases, from her vast inventory, which will carry through April 2018. Space prohibits my further elaboration on this marvelous performer, and human being, but I do hope this capsule summary serves as a means for further curiosity, to know more of her many contributions to American music, and why she remains so dear, to the hearts of collectors and musical historians.

By James P. O’Neill New York receives up to $190 million in federal funds each year to help protect the city from the constant threat of terrorism. It is money well spent.

The city, since the devastating attacks of Sept. 11, has been the target of 21 terror plots. These plots have included plans to attack New York City’s subways with backpack bombs, a live truck bomb that was discovered in Times Square, plans to place bombs in the joyful crowds watching the July 4 fireworks in the East River, an ISIS plot to behead a woman in Manhattan and to capture it on video.

Last year two bombs were placed in Chelsea. One detonated, injuring 32 people and a second bomb was removed safely and dismantled by the NYPD’s Bomb Squad.

The federal Homeland Security funds buy us a lot.

The Total Containment Vessel, the rolling vault that allowed the bomb squad to remove the live Chelsea bomb? Yes, paid for with Homeland Security Grant funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

The bomb robot that allowed the NYPD bomb technicians to deal with that device from far away, thus reducing risk to our detectives’ lives? Paid for with DHS grant money. The “bomb suit” — protective gear worn by the bomb tech who had to approach the device? Paid for by DHS money. The Vapor Wake Dogs that patrol large events looking for the next pair of “Boston Marathon Bombers” moving through a crowd with explosives in backpacks, the “active shooter” training that hones the tactical skills of thousands of officers who might face a New York version of a Paris attack by machine-gun-wielding terrorists in a crowded concert hall, the network of cameras our department uses to cover critical locations in the Financial District and Midtown, the overtime money for Counterterrorism Officers who

fight this war, or to be specific, prevent international terrorism without us. They don’t have the people, or the contacts on the ground that a police department has.

The second thing is that DHS money only pays for a small part of all this. In any police department, 85 percent of the budget typically goes to personnel costs.

With 1,500 NYPD officers devoted full-time to counter terrorism, that amounts to about $450 million a year, not counting special weapons and vehicles. That means that even at the current levels, the federal government only carries a fifth of the total cost to New York’s taxpayers.

One irony is that discussions about possible cuts to New York’s Homeland Security Grant Program funding comes as the city taxpayers are shelling out $100,000 a day when President Trump is not here to protect his building and his family. The city also pays $300,000 a day when Trump is in New York. About $24 million was spent during the transition period when Trump was here every day. So far, we have received only $7 million back. If that is a signal, it is a bad one for New Yorkers.

To be clear, no one in Washington has said that they will cut New York’s Homeland Security grant funding. That said, when the White House and the Office of Management and Budget push out a document that proposes $667 million in cuts to FEMA, state and local grant programs – including money the Homeland Security Grant Program — it is unlikely that those cuts will not be felt across the board by cities that need that money to do the kind of counterterrorism work the federal government can’t do alone.

And of those cities, New York remains the number one target in the nation.

Foods that cats and dogs should never eat

By Forum Staff Nutritious diets are essential to longterm pet health. Many well-intentioned pet owners feed their pets foods they believe are nutritious, only to learn that certain foods, even those deemed healthy for humans, can be quite dangerous to dogs and cats.

Cats and dogs metabolize foods and other substances differently from humans. WebMD reports that each year, there are more than 100,000 cases of pet poisoning in the United States. Many of these instances were caused by household substances that may seem perfectly harmless. Medications, cleaning products and certain foods can poison pets. Dogs tend to be at higher risk for food poisoning, particularly because they are less discriminatory with regard to food.

Before caving into the temptation to share snacks with their pets, pet owners should recognize the common foods the ASPCA and other pet welfare organizations list as the most likely to contribute to pet poisonings worldwide.

• Chocolate: Chocolate is accountable for roughly one-quarter of all toxic exposures. Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds.

When ingested by pets, methylxanthines can cause excessive thirst and urination,

panting, vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythm, and seizures. Serious cases can be fatal. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous for pets.

• Grapes/raisins: Grapes, raisins, sultanas, and currants, whether raw or cooked, can cause kidney failure in dogs. Not all dogs are affected. However, these fruits should be avoided. Symptoms include lethargy, diarrhea and vomiting within 24

hours of consumption.

• Hops: Commonly used for brewing beer, hops have become a greater risk for pets now that home brewing as a hobby or side business has become popular. When ingested, hops can cause a rapid heart rate, anxiety, vomiting, and other abdominal symptoms. Essential oils and tannins in hops also can cause high fever when pets ingest them.

• Macadamia nuts: These nuts can

cause depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs.

• Milk and dairy: Do not give dogs and cats milk to lap up, and avoid giving them high amounts of cheese and other dairy foods. Pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk. Therefore, diarrhea and digestive upset is likely to occur when pets consume dairy.

• Onions/garlic: These aromatic ingredients are not a good idea for pets, particularly cats. Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate, which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions and onion-related foods can cause a condition called hemolytic anemia. This is damage to red blood cells that causes the cells circulating throughout the pet’s body to burst.

• Xylitol: Keep pets away from sugarless gums and candies that contain Xylitol, which also may be used in toothpaste. The substance causes insulin to release in most species, which can lead to liver failure.

Pet owners should be aware that the foods they eat regularly may not be safe for their pets. Always consult with a veterinarian before giving pets foods commonly eaten by humans.

House Passes Meng Amendments as Part of Vets Affairs Legislation

By Forum Staff The House of Representatives on Friday unanimously passed legislation which includes two amendments authored by U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) that would provide employment opportunities for recently discharged service members, and address staffing shortages within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

According to Meng, the first amendment would require the secretary of the VA to establish a program that encourages members of the Armed Forces serving as health professionals to pursue jobs with the Veterans Health Administration upon their discharge or separation from the military.

The VHA, Meng noted, is a component of the VA and the largest integrated health care system in the country, providing care to millions of veterans through VA medical centers, clinics, and outpatient sites.

But those little winged cuties will grow up into adult animals, which often make them impractical Easter treats for the average family.

When purchasing chicks or ducklings, many people may not realize just how quickly these animals grow. Pekin ducklings, one of the more popular species of duck available, can reach adult size between four and five weeks of age. Chicks can transform from that small puffball of yellow or white feathers into an adultsized bird in mere months. Some chicken breeds weigh four pounds between seven and nine weeks of age.

Many families find that once chicks and ducklings outgrow their initial nesting box they become impractical. They need suitable shelter as well as a space to enjoy the outdoors. Animals are often abandoned if their needs become too much to handle.

City Luminaries Celebrate ‘Life and Legacy’ of Helen Marshall at Borough Hall Memorial Service

Marshall, Queens’ first African-American borough president, died on March 4 at her home in California. She was 87.

“It seems as if all of #nyc is here,” City Councilman Barry Grodenchik (D-Oakland Gardens) marveled on Twitter as former Mayor David Dinkins delivered his remarks inside the Helen Marshall Cultural Center – the Borough Hall atrium that was dedicated to Marshall in a ceremony in September.

Hosted by Borough President Melinda Katz and the Marshall Family, the special event was open to the public, with the invitation pledging to honor “a larger-than-life figure in the civic life of Queens [and] the City and State of New York.”

She will be missed by all who knew her.”

‘Deceptive’ Borough-Based Car Dealership Preyed on Vulnerable Consumers: City

By Forum Staff A large Long Island City used car dealer employed deceptive and illegal financing and sales practices to profit from vulnerable low-income and immigrant consumers, according to the City Department of Consumer Affairs.

Agency Commissioner Lorelei Salas last Thursday announced extensive charges against three used car dealerships that together comprise Major World. Consumer Affairs’ complaint document alleges “numerous violations and wide-ranging consumer harm,” and seeks more than $2 million in consumer restitution and fines. The department is also seeking revocation of the company’s three DCA secondhand auto dealer licenses: Major World Chevrolet, 4340 Northern Blvd.; Major World Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 50-30 Northern Blvd.; and Major Kia of Long Island City, 44-11 Northern Blvd. Additionally, DCA indicated that it is pushing for the creation of a trust fund for any unidentified consumers who have been harmed.

“Our city’s working families, who often struggle to make ends meet, rely on their cars to accomplish life’s most basic tasks like going to work or going to school,” Salas said.

“Buying that car is usually one of the largest purchases a family makes. It is outrageous that Major World, who claims to treat its customers like family, traps these hardworking New Yorkers into loans they can’t afford.

The City Department of Consumer Affairs has leveled extensive charges against several used-car dealerships on Northern Boulevard in Long Island City that together comprise Major World.

Major World has also been marketing aggressively to attract immigrant customers and their deceptive and predatory acts are as much an affront on immigrant communities as the deplorable policies we are seeing from the new federal government. Here in New York City, we are leveraging all the tools we have to curb this burgeoning lending problem that is adding to the national debt crisis.”

The investigation to-date includes 30 consumers, “a fraction” of the number of people likely harmed by Major World, ac-

cording to DCA. The dealerships allegedly have had a long-standing practice of luring unsuspecting consumers, particularly those with limited English proficiency, with promises of great deals on used cars and financing, regardless of credit history, income, or income-to-debt ratios. DCA announced last week that it has found that Major World has been submitting false information on consumers’ credit applications, such as nature of employment, income levels, and monthly rent obligations, in addition to falsely inflating car values. Major World presumably en-

gages in these practices, according to DCA, to make car deals more attractive to financing companies that then issue loans to consumers who might not, in fact, be qualified to receive those loans.

In the end, consumers who, according to the City, have not been informed of their loans’ financing terms, are left with overpriced and sometimes defective cars, and are saddled with high-interest loans that they should have never received and may not be able to afford.

“Shame on Major World,” said City Councilman Rafael Espinal (D-Brooklyn), chairman of the Council Committee on Consumer Affairs. “The largest lot in New York for used cars is also the largest lot for lemons and frauds. For too long now, this dishonest company has been preying on low-income and immigrant New Yorker’s.

It is time we stand up and demand that fair practices be set in place, and that those who deliberately scheme and impoverish people will be brought to justice. Congratulations to DCA on their steadfast investigative work, and I look forward to working closely with the Administration on legislative and policy proposals that will establish better standard and help reign in these bad actors.”

The Department of Consumer Affairs also noted that it is encouraging any consumer who feels Major World lied to them about the price and/or condition of their vehicle to contact the agency by calling 311, or by filing a complaint at nyc.gov/dca.

Jimmy Breslin, the borough-bred, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, author, and giant of City journalism, died on Sunday in Manhattan after a battle with pneumonia.

He was 88.

“The sidewalks of New York lost a great one this morning: Jimmy Breslin,” said Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer.

“Long before 9/11 showed America how great the average New Yorker was, Breslin was doing it on the pages of New York’s newspapers every day, and he was an amazing combination: brilliant journalist, Pulitzer Prize winner, but throughout his entire career, an everyday Joe. Jimmy, we’ll miss you.”

Breslin was born on Oct. 17, 1928, in Jamaica. Raised in Ozone Park by a single mother, Breslin graduated from John Adams High School and briefly attended Long Island University.
